San Diego Comic-Con 2012: Dexter Panel Highlights; Watch the First Two Minutes of Season 7!

San Diego Comic-Con 2012: Dexter Panel Highlights; Watch the First Two Minutes of Season 7!The "Dexter" Comic-Con panel just ended, and while, per usual, not a lot was revealed about the upcoming Season 7, we did get a peek at the first two minutes of the season opener and a few other choice tidbits to share. Read on for the details - if you don't mind a few spoilers.

First a "Dexter" fan art contest was revealed. Visit dexterfanart.com for more details on that.

Next the new "Dexter 2: The Game" was mentioned (find out more about that here), and then we saw a sneak peek of the first episode of "Dexter Early Cuts: All in the Family" in which Dexter is stalking someone who ritualistically kills on New Year's Eve. Good stuff!

Finally we got to the meat of the panel with a quick video recap of Season 6, which led right into the reason we were all there: the first look at Season 7.

Then the panel started with stars Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter, guest star Yvonne Strahovski, showrunner Scott Buck, and producer Wendy West.

All they would tell us about Yvonne's character, Hannah McKay, is that she's a woman of mystery with a dark past who helps Dexter with an investigation into an old murder.

What about Deb? Does she finally "know" what's up now? Jennifer Carpenter said no, she's taking it one step at a time - one forward, ten back.

What about Dexter becoming more human? Hall said he is learning the darker side of human nature - manipulative, paranoid, self-centered. That was followed by a funny moment when Hall was asked by a fan how he's like Dexter - he turned to Jennifer Carpenter and asked, "You want to answer that?"

If the theme of Season 6 was spirituality, what about Season 7? Buck said it's the simplest of all - What are the consequences of love?

Hall was asked if he can explain the appeal of the character to so many people. He said it appeals to people in a lot of different ways, but mostly he thinks it's that we all have a shadow side we have to hide and manage.

What about Harry (James Remar, who unfortunately wasn't there)? We'll see Harry as usual in Season 7 and also in flashbacks to when Dex and Deb were young.

How will Deb evolve this season? Carpenter said she feels lost with no compass. The tables have turned - Dexter is moving with certainty now, and she's trapped in her own fucking head.

And Dex's relationship with Harrison? As Harrison becomes more perceptive, the situation becomes dicier. Dexter has to face what he's trying to pull off as a parent.

Finally, what was Dexter's most satisfying kill? As expected, Hall said the biggest prize was Trinity. But they're like his children - he loves them all!

The new season begin September 30th on Showtime. For more in the meantime be sure to visit "Dexter" on Facebook, and follow "Dexter" on Twitter.

San Diego Comic-Con 2012: Official RoboCop Details Arrive!

0
0

The official synopsis for the RoboCop remake is here and even though we kind of already got the gist of things it's always good to have something official to cling to. Sort of like Linus and his blanket. Don't know how RoboCop relates to the Peanuts but it's late. Cut us some slack.

The flick sees Joel Kinnaman ("The Killing") as the title hero, a cop named Alex Murphy who is brought back from the brink of death and turned into a cyborg police officer. Gary Oldman has already been cast as his scientist-creator. Samuel L. Jackson will play Pat Novak, a charismatic media mogul and a powerful force in the RoboCop world. Last we heard, Hugh Laurie was in talks to play the evil and ultra-rich CEO of OmniCorp.

Currently the film has a tentative release date of August 9th, 2013.

Synopsis
In RoboCop, the year is 2029 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the centre of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front.

Alex Murphy is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilises their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life.

He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.

Director José Padilha (Elite Squad) reimagines the tale of part man, part machine, all cop starring Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) as the title character, Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight Rises) as the scientist who creates RoboCop, and Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers) as media mogul Pat Novak.

Topps Delivers Mars Attacks Commemorative Card Set

0
0

Fans of all things Mars Attacks should find a lot to like about this cool piece of news. In an age where card collecting seems to have fallen by the wayside, it's nice to see Topps doing their all to make the hobby fun again. And it doesn't get much more fun than crazed aliens hellbent on our destruction!

From the Press Release

Since its initial release in 1962, MARS ATTACKS has made an indelible impression on pop culture, inspiring legions of fans around the world. Now, Topps is proud to announce MARS ATTACKS' triumphant return to its trading card roots. Coinciding this summer with the landmark half-century milestone the company is pulling out all the stops for collectors to re-connect with the cult classic while ushering in a whole new generation of fans.

The commemorative trading card set, currently in development for release in July, is a cornerstone of the 50th anniversary campaign. In addition to reprinting the 55 iconic cards which comprised the original series, Topps is adding 25 never-before-seen subjects.

Ten cards, painted by Jason Edmiston, are based on storyboarded sketches from original series pencillers Wally Wood and Bob Powell that did not originally appear in the 1962 card set. Edmiston’s finished works pay homage to the pulp sci-fi style of Norm Saunders, the master painter who first gave MARS ATTACKS its signature look. Fifteen all-new cards are provided by Eisner award-winning comic book artist John McCrea, the acclaimed illustrator of IDW’s forthcoming MARS ATTACKS comic book series. McCrea is known to comics fans as the co-creator of Hitman (in collaboration with writer Garth Ennis), among numerous other high-profile assignments. His new, powerful imagery for the card set will provide fans with added insights to the comics as well as to the all-new MARS ATTACKS universe.

A variety of extra inserts are also designed to add collectibility and fun: limited edition multi-colored parallels and 3D lenticulars will be randomly included in packs. And, for the very first time, Topps will be including MARS ATTACKS sketch cards in boxes. Many talented artists are on board to provide their one-of-a-kind hand-rendered sketch art.

The original MARS ATTACKS series enjoys the distinction of being the most sought after and valuable non-sport trading card set of all time. Its legacy status has earned the new series Topps’ full “Heritage style” treatment. In order to preserve the product’s retro sensibility, all cards will be printed on thick, old fashioned card stock. Similarly, the design treatments for the display box and wrapper mimic the now-classic 1962 packaging.

The trading cards will be complemented by a product licensing program geared primarily to core hobby fans. A host of premium quality tie-ins are in the works: action figures and plush toys (Mezco), comics and graphic novels (IDW), a commemorative book (Abrams), model kits (Moebius), costumes (Incogneato), T-shirts (Impact), statues and busts (Quarantine), holiday ornaments (Gentle Giant), limited-edition prints (Russell Walks), bobble head dolls and vinyl figures (Funko).

Super7 To Resurrect The Lost Kenner Alien Action Figures!

0
0

If this isn't the coolest news to come out of SDCC '12, I'll eat my hat (if I wore one). Retro toys are some of the best collectibles, bar none. No, they may not drip with screen accuracy, or be remotely articulated, but their personality goes a long way.

I mean, just look at these things and tell me I'm wrong!

The year was 1979. Toy giant Kenner was presumably searching for the next action figure line to rival their own success with Star Wars. Along came another science fiction spectacle in the shape of Ridley Scott's Alien. An odd choice for a line of children's action figures, Kenner designed prototypes for five figures to be made once their larger xenomorph figure did a market trial run.

For whatever reason, those 3 ¾ action figures were never made. Fast-forward 33 years and enter Super7, who managed to unearth these designs with the intent on making them a wonderful reality! With official permission from 20th Century Fox, Super7 is going to produce the full set of Alien figures as a subset of their Reaction series (a line of all retro figures).

This means you can own 1979 incarnations of Ripley, Dallas, Ash, Kane in Nostromo Suit and, of course, the Big Chap (on-set name for the xenomorph). Excited? Super7 says other Alien merchandise will follow, and we'll be sure to keep you updated on every piece of it. And if you're at SDCC this week, visit Super7’s booth (#4729) for teasers of what is to come in 2013!

We know you've all been clamoring for any information you can find on American Mary, the upcoming film from directors Jen and Sylvia Soska. We totally understand. We're clamoring also.

Well, we need to clamor no longer folks, come on in and check out the first official trailer for American Mary.

American Mary is the second film from Vancouver, BC directors Jen and Sylvia Soska. Their first project, Dead Hooker in a Trunk, has developed something of a cult following, giving a real buzz to their heretofore hush hush follow-up, American Mary. At Dread Central, we let the cat out of the bag revealing the film's plot revolves around the underground world of extreme body modification and now you can take your first looks at just how extreme it is! Yikes!

Written and directed by the Soskas, American Mary stars Katharine Isabelle, Antonio Cupo, Tristan Risk, David Lovgren, Paula Lindberg, Clay St. Thomas, John Emmet Tracy and Twan Holliday. No distribution information has been released yet, but we're quite sure it won't be long before we find out just how and when we'll be meeting Mary.

For more on the film, visit the official Twisted Twins Productions website, like American Mary on Facebook and, on Twitter, follow American Mary (@_American_Mary) and the Twisted Twins, Jen and Sylvia Soska (@twisted_twins).

    Synopsis
This metaphor for the Soskas own journey through the independent film industry follows medical student Mary Mason as she becomes increasingly broke and disenchanted. The allure of easy money sends Mary into the twilight world of body modification and underground surgeries where obsessed flesh artists will pay anything and go through any pain to get their unusual procedures done. But Mary soon finds that her new 'profession' leaves more marks on her own psyche than on her freakish clientele.

San Diego Comic-Con 2012: Hands-On Impressions of Silent Hill: Book of Memories

    0
    0

The Silent Hill franchise has been in a state of flux for what seems like ages. With the new Playstation Vita exclusive entry in the series, Silent Hill: Book of Memories, developer Wayforward Technologies is taking the franchise in an entirely new direction.

Book of Memories begins with your character receiving a mysterious package. Upon opening it, you discover that it contains a book that encompasses your entire life, every experience, every hope, every fear, every memory. You wonder to yourself, “What would happen if I rewrote it?” And so begins the descent into madness, into Silent Hill.

Unlike previous entries, Book of Memories is not a survival horror experience. Having more in common with classic dungeon crawlers like Diablo and Torchlight, Book of Memories is an extreme departure from every other installment in the franchise.

You start off your game by creating your character. Which in and of itself is kind of strange for a Silent Hill title. Choose male or female, hair, clothing, you know, character creation stuff. After that, it’s off to the dungeon to bludgeon some monsters to death.

Once the game actually starts it’s obvious just how different Book of Memories is from a traditional Silent Hill title. It’s not played from the series’ standard third-person perspective. You’re not slogging through thick fog. You’re not making fight or flight decisions. You’re not cowering in a corner hoping some horrible, other worldly creature will pass by and not turn its gaze towards you. Book of Memories is a dungeon crawler through and through. It’s all about exploration, picking up better and better items, finding keys to open doors and killing everything in sight to see just what kind of goodies they might drop.

Combat has never been what you could call a staple in Silent Hill. It’s always been there, but more because it had to be rather than ever being a real draw to the franchise. But inBook of Memories, the combat is front and center at all times. It seems like every new room you explore is filled with at least two of Silent Hill’s demonic denizens just waiting for your various instruments of death to meet with their deformed faces. Pipes, boards, axes, pistols, all the usual manner of weapons are at your disposal. If you use one much, however, it’ll break and you’ll be left with nothing but your bare hands to defend yourself with. Of course, being a loot driven game, you’re never too far away from getting your hands on something to improve your predicament.

In addition to murdering things, there’s also some light puzzle solving here and there. On the floor I played, I was tasked with searching the area to find five puzzle pieces that I had to bring to a door at the end of the area in order to advance. After fighting my way through a dozen or so rooms, I finally had all the necessary pieces. I returned to the door to face my task. It was fairly simple; I had 5 different sized pieces and had to figure out which configuration they had to be in to fit on a pattern. After a couple of tries, I had it figured out and was on my way to the next floor, and the end of the demo.

If you’re not ready to face the horrors alone, in good dungeon crawling fashion there’s also a co-op mode, a first for Silent Hill. In this mode, up to 4 people can bring their unique characters into the fray and join forces to take on whatever the evil town can throw at you.

Being a Vita game, you always have to wonder just how developers are going to make use of the handheld’s myriad of special features. Wayforward Technologies seem to get it. Rather than using anything in a fashion that’s intrusive, or too taxing, they’re used to free up tasks that would have usually been assigned to the precious real estate that are the face buttons. Stuff like picking up weapons and dragging the items around to solve puzzles are all assigned to the front touch screen. It does exactly what the technology should do, make things simpler and more stream lined.

When I sat down to check out Book of Memories, I wasn’t really sure to expect. Eschewing survival horror for loot lust seems like a strange decision, but for the most part it works. A full on horror game on a handheld would be extremely hard, impossible even, to pull off on a portable console. If for no other reason than that it would be tricky to really get under someone’s skin on a small screen while riding on the bus. With smaller, more bite sized levels, and endless loot lust, a dungeon crawler like this is much more suited for a console like the Vita.

Longtime fans of Silent Hill looking for a survival horror experience they can take with them on the go may be disappointed, but if you’re a Vita owner who’s looking for a Diablo-esque experience you can have on you at all times, Book of Memories seems like it will be right up your alley.

Silent Hill:Book of Memories will release in October 2012 for the Playstation Vita.

San Diego Comic-Con 2012: Elysium Press Conference Coverage Featuring Director Neill Blomkamp, Stars Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley and More!

    0
    0

Just what is Elysium? That was pretty much the question first and foremost on our minds when we sat down for the press conference for writer/director Neill Blomkamp's latest during last week's San Diego Comic-Con.

Also on hand at the press conference were producer Simon Kinberg and the film's stars, Matt Damon, Jodie Foster and Sharlto Copley (who is reuniting with Blomkamp after their first wildly successful collaboration together- District 9).

Because the details have been slim up until now regarding the flick, we thought we'd give you as much as you could handle in the way of two videos. In our first Elysium press conference video, Blomkamp and company finally give up some details on the story and more insight into the characters that Damon, Foster and Copley will portray in the upcoming sci-fi epic.

The second Elysium video features the cast discussing how Blomkamp got them involved with the project, more about the director's complete Elysium graphic novel that he had everyone involved use as reference material for the flick and both Copley and Blomkamp discussing reuniting on their latest as well as reflecting on the differences in their experiences working on this movie and District 9.

During the event Blomkamp also discussed his next project, Chappy, which reunited him with District 9 co-writer Terri Tatchell.

"It's much more simplistic than Elysium," explained Blomkamp. "It was a fairly formed idea that I had already so I'd just go back and forth; I'd write that with Terri when I felt like it, and then I'd go back to work on Elysium independently. It's a science fiction comedy thing; that's about as far as I can go with it. It's called Chappy."

Check out our two press conference videos below, and look for Elysium in theatres on March 1st, 2013, courtesy of Columbia Pictures.

    Synopsis
In the year 2159, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster) will stop at nothing to preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium – but that doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in by any means they can. Max (Matt Damon) agrees to take on a life-threatening mission, one that could bring equality to these polarized worlds.

This writer is imploring you, our tightly-knit horror community, as we approach October – our month of months – to unite for a good cause: supporting Los Angeles women battling breast cancer by contributing to the Bowling for Boobies campaign.

For the past several years I've been involved directly with Bowling for Boobies (a non-profit fundraiser which provides monetary assistance to L.A. women who are experiencing financial challenges as the result of fighting and living with breast cancer). It's been a vastly rewarding experience as donations go directly to someone struggling with this deadly disease.

Here's Your Chance to Help The Horror Starlets Assist Women Battling Breast Cancer

This year we're at it again with the 8th Annual Bowling for Boobies, which culminates on Sunday, October 21st, in Los Angeles at Jillian’s Hi-Life at Universal City Walk with a red carpet followed by an evening of knocking down some pins with The Horror Starlets bowling team, which is comprised this year of myself and returning actresses Cerina Vincent (MoniKa, Cabin Fever), Allison Kyler (Chromeskull: Laid To Rest 2), Brooke Lewis (Ms. Vampy), Carlee Baker (The Woman, Femme Fatales), Ashlynn Yennie (The Human Centipede films, the upcoming Schism) and Sarah Butler (I Spit on Your Grave), along with new teammates Barbara Nedeljakova (Hostel and Hostel: Part 2), Kristina Klebe (Rob Zombie’s Halloween) and Natalie Victoria (DeadHeads).

So, how can you help? A modest (and tax-deductible donation) would be most appreciated. Just visit The Horror Starlets donation page to help us reach our minimum goal of $20,000!

Witches of East End Setting Up Residence on the Lifetime Network

    0
    0

Witches of East End Setting Up Residence on the Lifetime NetworkAre you familiar with author Maria de la Cruz? If so, then you’re probably aware of her Witches of East End novel. The Lifetime Network sure hopes so because it's turning this tale of a mother and her daughters who are secretly powerful witches into a television series.

Knowing nothing about Witches of East End, I looked it up on Amazon and found the following plot description:

The three Beauchamp women--Joanna and her daughters, Freya and Ingrid--live in North Hampton, out on the tip of Long Island. Their beautiful, mist-shrouded town seems almost stuck in time, and all three women lead seemingly quiet, uneventful existences. But they are harboring a mighty secret--they are powerful witches banned from using their magic. Joanna can resurrect people from the dead and heal the most serious of injuries. Ingrid, her bookish daughter, has the ability to predict the future and weave knots that can solve anything from infertility to infidelity. And finally, there's Freya, the wild child, who has a charm or a potion that can cure most any heartache.

For centuries all three women have been forced to suppress their abilities. But then Freya, who is about to get married to the wealthy and mysterious Bran Gardiner, finds that her increasingly complicated romantic life makes it more difficult than ever to hide her secret. Soon Ingrid and Joanna confront similar dilemmas, and the Beauchamp women realize they can no longer conceal their true selves. They unearth their wands from the attic, dust off their broomsticks, and begin casting spells on the townspeople. It all seems like a bit of good-natured, innocent magic, but then mysterious, violent attacks begin to plague the town. When a young girl disappears over the Fourth of July weekend, they realize it's time to uncover who and what dark forces are working against them.

Sounds a bit like “Charmed” by way of Practical Magic to me.

Having found success with Jennifer Love Hewitt’s soapy drama series about a single mom turned happy endings massage therapist with a heart of gold and hoping for future success with “Desperate Housewives” creator Marc Cherry’s new soap “Devious Maids”, Variety reports that Lifetime is looking to get in on the supernatural genre by ordering a pilot based on Maria de la Cruz’s Witches of East End. Scripting the pilot will be Maggie Friedman, who must really love witchy soap operas, having previously written and executive produced ABC’s short-lived The Witches of Eastwick primetime adaptation “Eastwick”.

Seeing franchise potential from the eight-minute short, Fox is currently in negotiations to purchase the rights to Ruin and the pitch is to turn it into a live-action film.

The creator of the short, Wes Ball, is attached to direct and co-write the feature version of Ruin with T.S. Nowlin. McG is negotiating to produce the film through his Wonderland Sound and Vision company, along with Lucasfilm executive Steve Tzirlin, who oversaw script and story development for Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Ruin debuted on Vimeo in March, featuring a post-apocalyptic North American city that's been overgrown by vegetation. It's been referred to as I Am Legend meets Terminator 2. The film does provide an incredible vehicle for Ball to show off his skills in creating exciting chases. Fox jumped on the opportunity to purchase the rights to the film before any other studio saw it. A high six-figure deal is rumored.

Ball created Ruin, working on the project periodically, over the course of two years. He has also done graphic work for HBO as well as the Star Trek and Aliens in the Attic DVD and Blu-ray. He won a Student Academy Award bronze medal in 2003 for his story A Work in Progress.

Check out what all the hype is about. We've got Ruin in its entirety below.
