Presidential Candidate A. Zombie Releases His First Campaign Ad

0
0

A few days ago we told you about the launch of a new candidate's campaign for President: A. Zombie has entered the 2012 Presidential race and vows to restore zombies to televisions everywhere. Check out his first campaign ad.

From the Prior Press Release:
A formidable third party contender for the nation’s highest office, A. Zombie announced his candidacy at a high-energy rally on Monday, August 20, at Westfield Horton Plaza in San Diego. The candidate and his human wife, Patty Morgan-Zombie, have now commenced a cross-country bus tour that will take them to six major U.S. cities including Tampa and Charlotte, where they will bring their pro-zombie message to the Republican and Democratic Conventions.

“My husband is someone who has dedicated his life and his afterlife to bringing equal viewing opportunities to all Americans,” said Mrs. Zombie. “He’s the right man to lead the fight to bring zombies to everyone in America, and he won’t stop -- even if it kills him, again.”

The A. Zombie for President Campaign is organized by AMC Networks, home to AMC, WE tv, IFC, and Sundance Channel. Satellite company DISH dropped these networks earlier this year because of an unrelated lawsuit and is now in the disadvantaged position of being the nation’s only major television provider without these channels and their popular shows.

A one-issue candidate, A. Zombie’s mission is to rally zombie fans around the country who don’t have access to these networks and shows to find an alternative television provider before the highly-anticipated third season premiere on October 14, 2012, of A. Zombie’s favorite show, AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” the most watched basic cable scripted drama series among DISH subscribers, according to The Nielsen Company.

A. Zombie’s campaign juggernaut arrived in Dallas today and then heads to Tampa for the Republican Convention (August 28), Atlanta (September 1), Charlotte for the Democratic Convention (September 3-4) and New York City (September 5).

For more information about the campaign, be sure to visit azombieforpresident.com.

Vintage 1982 Action Figures from John Carpenter's The Thing

Vintage 1982 Action Figures from John Carpenter's The ThingNowadays every time we turn on the TV or sit down to read the news, we're reminded of the imperfections of this world. Wars, racism, intolerance... they're everywhere, man. Yet, none of them are as profound a reminder of our suckage than the fact that these delights never existed.

Badass Digest brought a new video to light found on YouTube (of course) showing off Eighties style action figures from John Capenter's classic film The Thing. The feeling of authenticity in the following faux commercial is amazing. Anyone who grew up in the decade of big hair and gaudy clothes will recognize its style immediately.

We're not exactly sure who's responsible for this wondrous ad, but we want to both kiss you and tell you to go screw yourself at the same time.

One day... in a perfect world. Sigh.

Frankenweenie is making its European premiere by opening the 56th BFI London Film Festival, and lucky UK residents can watch simultaneous premieres in 30 cinemas nationwide. The festival will also host The Art of Frankenweenie Exhibition from 17 to 21 October.

From the Press Release:
The 56th BFI London Film Festival, in partnership with American Express, is delighted to announce that this year’s festival will open on Wednesday 10 October with the European premiere of Disney’s Frankenweenie, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Tim Burton.

In partnership with American Express and Disney, and in a first for the festival, the Opening Night screening and red carpet will go live from Odeon Leicester Square to BFI IMAX and 30 screens across the UK. This event is part of the festival’s drive to reach a diverse UK audience and put the public at the heart of the festival-going experience.

Frankenweenie's London Film Festival Premiere to Be Simulcast in 30 Cinemas Across the UK

Frankenweenie is a heartwarming tale about a boy and his dog. After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life – with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor’s fellow students, teachers, and the entire town all learn that getting a new “leash on life” can be monstrous.

A visually stunning black and white, stop-motion animated film in 3D, Frankenweenie’s voice cast includes Catherine O’Hara, Martin Short, Martin Landau, Charlie Tahan, Atticus Shaffer, Robert Capron, Conchata Ferrell, and Winona Ryder. Frankenweenie is the first animated film that Tim Burton has directed for Disney. Burton also produced along with Allison Abbate, with Don Hahn serving as executive producer. The screenplay is by John August, based on an original idea by Tim Burton. Disney will release the film in the UK on 17 October.

Tim Burton, Winona Ryder, Martin Short, Catherine O’Hara, Martin Landau, Producer Allison Abbate, and Executive Producer Don Hahn are expected to attend the festival.

Clare Stewart, BFI Head of Exhibition comments on her first Opening Night choice as Festival Director: “Funny, dark and whimsical, this gloriously crafted stop-motion 3D animation from Tim Burton – the reigning prince of outsiders – playfully turns the Frankenstein story on its bolted-on head. Frankenweenie is a perfect choice of opener – it’s a film that revels in the magic of movies from one of cinema’s great visionaries. Tim Burton has chosen London as his home city and hundreds of talented British craftspeople have contributed to this production. To host the European premiere, to present The Art of Frankenweenie Exhibition and to take our Opening Night out to 30 screens means we are making the festival even more accessible for film fans across the UK.”

Producer Allison Abbate adds: “I am delighted that Frankenweenie, which was produced here in London at 3 Mills Studios, will be opening the 56th BFI London Film Festival. Living and working in the UK, I’ve been able to collaborate with some of the most talented artists in the industry including the puppet designers and fabricators from Manchester-based Mackinnon & Saunders. In the last nine years, I’ve attended the festival as both a filmmaker and guest, and I know how passionate and enthusiastic the audiences are, so I am thrilled to share the film’s European premiere with them.”

Colin Walsh, Managing Director, American Express UK adds: “We’re thrilled to be further strengthening our partnership with the BFI and the Festival through our support for this year’s Opening Night Gala. In addition to Frankenweenie being a much anticipated film, what makes this year’s Opening Night so special is the opportunity for audiences across the country to experience the excitement of a West End premiere. That, coupled with the interactive exhibition giving people an insight behind the scenes of the film, is sure to make this a fantastic start to this year’s festival.”

The Art of Frankenweenie Exhibition is generously supported by American Express. The exhibition runs from 17-21 October (with a press preview and preview for American Express Cardmembers on 16 October) and will be free to the public. For information on tickets see London Film Festival runs from Wednesday 10 October to Sunday 21 October. The full programme for the festival will be announced at the press launch on Wednesday 5 September.

B-Sides: The Ballad of Bigfoot on Blood Mountain

Tim York is the man heard crooning about Bigfoot during the opening credits of Blood Beast of Monster Mountain AKA Monster Mountain AKA The Legend of McCullough’s Mountain. The lyrics talk of how the tale of the creature changes. Not nearly as many changes as the movie itself went through.

The 1976 docudrama Blood Beast of Monster Mountain is actually the 1965 horror comedy Demon Hunter: The Legend of Blood Mountain retitled and chopped up with new footage inserted by Donn Davison, who appears in the film billed as “World Traveler, Lecturer, and Psychic Investigator”. Really more like a producer who made a go of it in the Seventies repackaging obscure, older movies with new footage for re-release.

Demon Hunter: The Legend of Blood Mountain was the starring vehicle for a little known 1960’s Georgia horror movie host who went by the name “Bestoink Dooley”. Sort of a bumbling stooge who looked like a Hasidic version of Popeye’s hamburger loving pal Wimpy, the plot followed him as he tried to fulfill his dream of becoming a newspaper reporter by breaking the big story about a monster lurking on a nearby mountain.

For Blood Beast of Monster Mountain, Davison edited out all of the footage of the original monster (a warthog-like demon head on a fat guy in caveman garb) and replaced it with shots of a Bigfoot-looking creature obscured almost entirely in shadow and fog. He then edited the movie down to make room to insert new footage of him conducting staged interviews with locals that claimed to have encountered the creature on the mountain. The whole thing was then patched together and resold to cash-in on the Bigfoot craze of the 1970’s and assuming nobody will notice the drastic change in film stock when it jumps between the documentary and “dramatic reenactment” portions of the film.

The story behind Blood Beast of Monster Mountain is probably more interesting than either version of the film and even this opening credits ballad about the Bigfoot said to lurk somewhere on McCullough’s Mountain.

Saturday Nightmares: Graveyard Shift (1990)

Saturday Nightmares: Graveyard ShiftI don't usually like using the term "guilty pleasure" because I rarely feel guilty about the films I like. But this adaptation of one of Stephen King's earliest (and most fun) short stories is such a mixed bag that it's hard to type out any kind of legitimate defense.

It had been quite a few years since I last viewed Graveyard Shift, and so I was curious to see if revisiting it would sustain my initial impression. Over the years I've found that the author's most hardcore fans are the most dismissive of this film, the general consensus being that the filmmakers took an atmospheric and claustrophobic story and failed in recreating any of those feelings. I don't necessarily agree with the assessment, however. If Graveyard Shift does anything right, it's the atmosphere part, the problem being that it never amounts to more than a subpar monster movie - one whose enjoyment will probably be determined by how much its audience enjoys this particular subgenre.

Set in the fictional Maine town of Gates Falls within a textile mill that keeps the majority of the population employed, a series of gruesome deaths occur during the mill's graveyard shift. Hilariously, the mill's foreman, Warwick (Stephen Macht), isn't all that concerned about these deaths (each of them appearing to be accidents). Instead he's determined to keep the place running, full steam ahead. It's revealed that the mill's basement is a cluttered, rat-infested death trap, and it's up to him and a small crew to work the graveyard shift over a holiday weekend to exterminate these vermin and make the place manageable again. But they quickly discover the culprit behind the "accidents" is a gigantic mutant rat-creature that has made the caverns its home. It stalks the crew one-by-one, killing and feeding at every turn as the survivors frantically search for a way to escape.

If you're familiar with King's short story, then you'll recognize the above description as part of the problem. It's clear that the production couldn't afford the numerous creature types found in King's text, focusing instead on one monster. Most of the fun of the story was derived from finding out what kind of freakish rat-variation King was going to bring forth next: giant rats, flying rats, the queen rat, etc. The whole idea of these animals evolving into new breeds of monsters as a result of being trapped in the subterranean dwelling has been completely scaled back here - and once you know what could've been, what actually is is pretty disappointing.

Saturday Nightmares: Graveyard Shift

As I said, Graveyard Shift does benefit from its setting. The grimy, dirty surroundings outfit the film in a gritty and realistic atmosphere. Beyond that, some of the casting is excellent. Our two leads (David Andrews and Kelly Wolf) are never developed beyond the broad strokes, but they're likable enough. The film shines with the presence of Stephen Macht, however. This guy was always an underrated actor, but here he takes on the role of "evil boss" with bastardly relish - there isn't a frame that goes by where he isn't mentally and/or physically abusing one of his employees. Macht is clearly having a good time, and he gives the film some much needed energy. He's actually outdone by the all-too-brief appearance of Brad Dourif as rat exterminator Tucker Cleveland. Without much to do, Dourif steals the show whenever he's there. Particularly amusing is his conversation with Andrews' character regarding his philosophy on extermination. In a drought of bland and forgettable players, Macht and Dourif really do rise above the production.

Director Ralph S. Singleton (who in part also produced the excellent Pet Sematary and the not-so-excellent Pet Sematary II) fails in generating the kind of scares this kind of film really needs to survive. Production design is beyond superb, lending the film a feel almost all its own, but Singleton fails to milk it for maximum effect. By the time our characters have entered the mysterious dwelling of the creature, complete with thousands of skeletal remains, the tension is strangely absent. Singleton takes the Ridley Scott approach with respect to showing his creature - perhaps to exploit the "fear of the unknown" element - but the massive rat/bat hybrid is glimpsed enough to be both silly and disgusting all at once.

This write-up may give off the impression that I didn't really enjoy Graveyard Shift. It's something of a mess and doesn't work as well as it should. There's really no question. So while I'm reluctant to suddenly embrace the term "guilty pleasure", I will admit that I probably do like this sucker more than I should. I suffer no illusions with respect to its quality, although I'm always entertained whenever I watch it. There's enough material in King's original story that I'd love to see someone else try their hand a making a practical FX-laden creature feature out of the source. But catch this sucker on a rainy day (or whenever you're at your least discriminating), and you may just find yourself entertained. I did.

Max Von Sydow (The Exorcist), Pete Postlethwaite (The Omen remake), Rachel Hurd-Wood (Perfume: The Story of a Murderer), and Alice Krige (Silent Hill) all star alongside James Purefoy in Michael J. Bassett's tale of a 16th Century Puritan tormented by his past evils. Following the film's current VOD run, it will receive a limited theatrical release on September 28th.

Synopsis
Captain Solomon Kane (Purefoy) is a brutally efficient 16th Century killing machine. Armed with his signature pistols, cutlass and rapier, he and his men unleash their bloodlust as they fight for England in war after war on all continents.

As the story opens, Kane and his band of pillagers are carving a bloody path through hordes of defenders in an exotic city in northern Africa. But, when Kane decides to attack a mysterious nearby castle to plunder its rumored riches, his mission takes a fateful turn. One by one, Kane’s men are picked off by demonic creatures until he alone is left to face the Devil’s own Reaper -- dispatched from the depths of Hell to lay claim to his hopelessly corrupt soul. Though Kane at last manages to escape, he knows that he now must redeem himself by renouncing violence and devoting himself wholly to a life of peace and purity.

His newfound spirituality, however, is quickly put to the ultimate test when he begins his journey across an England ravaged by diabolical human Raiders controlled by a terrifying, masked Overlord. After Kane fails to thwart the brutal slaughter of the Crowthorns, a Puritan family that has befriended him, he vows to find and free their enslaved daughter, Meredith (Hurd-Wood) -- even if it means jeopardizing his own soul by re-embracing his murderous talents for a higher cause. His determined search eventually brings him face to face with his family’s own deadly secrets as he attempts to save Meredith and all of England from the forces of evil.

Last we heard, Joe Dante's looooong awaited The Hole was getting a Blu-ray/DVD release on September 25th, and now, according to Yahoo, it's also hitting theatres on September 28th. We'll do some digging, and in the meantime check out the "theatrical trailer" for PG-13 thriller The Hole.

Synopsis:
From visionary director Joe Dante comes a suspense thriller that explores the fears and secrets buried deep in the human mind. Life couldn't possibly get worse, or so thought 17-year-old Dane (Chris Massoglia) and his 10-year-old brother, Lucas (Nathan Gamble), when their single mother, Susan (Teri Polo), uproots them from New York City to the sleepy little town of Bensonville. For Dane the only exciting thing about their new town is the beautiful girl next door, Julie (Haley Bennett). With Susan spending more and more time at work, Dane and Lucas are left unattended to explore the depths of their eerie new residence. With Dane paying more attention to Julie, he has far less time and patience for his little brother. But then everything changes when they find a sinister bottomless hole under a locked trap door in the basement.

As the brothers experiment with the hole, they realize that the cold pit goes on forever. They drop a nail and never hear it hit bottom. They lower a flashlight and a video camera, and they get consumed by the darkness. Hoping for some answers about the house's past, Dane and Lucas bring Julie in on their new discovery. When the hole is exposed, evil is unleashed. With strange shadows lurking around every corner and past nightmares coming to life, the trio will have to come face-to-face with their darkest fears to put an end to THE HOLE.
