Supernatural Season 8A new promo photo for "Supernatural" Season 8 popped up online today to go along with the promo video that came out a few days ago. In it a battle-scarred Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) is front and center, and he looks ready for more.

Synopsis:
The thrilling and terrifying journey of the Winchester brothers continues as "Supernatural" enters its eighth season. Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) have spent their lives on the road, battling every kind of supernatural threat. Over the years, after dozens of bloody adventures, they have faced everything from the yellow-eyed demon that killed their mother to vampires, ghosts, shapeshifters, angels and fallen gods. They even came face to face with Lucifer and the Four Horsemen in averting the Apocalypse. With the help of allies – both human and supernatural – they’ve discovered that every threat they vanquish opens a new door for evil to enter in. In the show’s seventh season, their hunt for the dreaded Leviathans – monstrous creatures escaped from Purgatory – has cost them dearly, claiming the life of their best friend and father-figure, Bobby Singer, and shattering their protector, the fallen angel Castiel. As dawn arrives after their endless struggle and sacrifice to defeat the world’s evils, they know that, come nightfall, something otherworldly – something supernatural – will claw its way out of the shadows, demanding their attention.

Making its premiere at 11:59 PM on Sunday, September 9th, at the Ryerson Theater at the Toronto International Film Festival is JT Petty's new horror comedy Hellbenders, and if these exclusive postcards don't sell you on it, NOTHING will! Dig on every glorious pixel!

Clifton Collins, Jr., Clancy Brown, Andre Royo, Robyn Rikoon, and Dan Fogler star. Click here for more showtimes!

Synopsis
Pray that you’ll never need the professional services of the Hellbound Saints of Brooklyn Parish. Resembling members of a raucous fraternity rather than the Catholic Church, this ragtag group of priests lives in a constant state of debauchery: smoking, drinking and philandering as if in a contest to top each other’s efforts in breaking the seven deadly sins as flamboyantly as possible. Fronted by Angus (Clancy Brown of Highlander and The Burrowers), their dysfunctional leader, they are the Church’s last best hope. When a regular exorcism just won’t do the trick, they’re called in to trap a demon and drag it down to hell with them.

However, in order to be ready for fire and brimstone, the men — and woman — of this stained cloth (including cast members Clifton Collins, Jr., Dan Fogler, Macon Blair and Robyn Rikoon) must maintain a rigorous regimen of doing very, very bad things. Their primmest member (Andre Royo, beloved as Bubbles from "The Wire") tracks their misconducts in a logbook to prove they’re round-the-clock "damnation-ready." But when a tough case tests the team’s mettle and a new Church bureaucrat threatens to shut them down, they must sin and sin again in a mad race to save the world and halt a demon’s plans to wipe out humanity.

Dig on the posters below, and check out the final image, which makes the Hellbenders logo!

A week or so ago we received a large box in the mail. Inside was a VCR wrapped in blood-stained paper along with an equally stained box containing an unmarked video cassette. We bootlegged the clip for you then, but now we have the whole enchilada!

V/H/S (review) is OnDemand NOW with a limited theatrical run to follow beginning October 5th. For more info keep your eyes on the V/H/S Facebook page.

Segment directors include Adam Wingard (You're Next, A Horrible Way to Die, Pop Skull), Simon Barrett (You're Next, Dead Birds, Read Sands), Ti West (The House of the Devil, The Roost, The Innkeepers), David Bruckner (The Signal), Joe Swanberg (Silver Bullets), Glenn McQuaid (I Sell the Dead), along with Radio Silence, two of whom were part of the YouTube sensations known as Chad, Matt and Rob (Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Chad Villella).

Synopsis:
When a group of petty criminals are hired by a mysterious party to retrieve a rare piece of found footage from a rundown house in the middle of nowhere, they soon realize that the job isn’t going to be as easy as they thought. In the living room a lifeless body holds court before a hub of old television sets, surrounded by stacks upon stacks of VHS tapes. As they search for the right one, they are treated to a seemingly endless number of horrifying videos, each stranger than the last.

Bringing together some of the top filmmakers in the game today, this wickedly conceived horror anthology sends the viewer through a gauntlet of suspense, terror, shock, and downright brutality—instantly distinguishing itself from a sea of lackluster found-footage horror flicks. The diverse and deviously creative minds behind V/H/S shatter any preconceived notions about the genre, making it feel inventive and captivating once again.

Universal Halloween Horror Nights: You Are The Walking Dead in The Walking Dead: Dead Inside

$

Universal Halloween Horror Nights: You Are The Walking Dead in The Walking Dead: Dead InsideEvery year Universal Studios goes all out for its Halloween Horror Nights event. One of the biggest draws to this event every year are the horror mazes.

In years past the mazes have been themed on such horror classics as Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and many more. This year, in a move that makes so much sense that it blows my mind, one of the new mazes will be based on AMC’s smash hit series "The Walking Dead".

This past week, Dread Central was on hand as creative director John Murdy gave a sneak peek of what park goers can expect from the maze. If you’re a fan of "The Walking Dead" (and if you’re reading this site, I’m willing to bet that you are), you definitely don’t want to miss this.

The Walking Dead: Dead Inside is based on the first two seasons of the AMC series. In the maze, you’ll retrace the steps of Rick Grimes and company as you relive iconic moments from the series, starting with the hospital all the way up to Hershel Walker’s farm.

The maze plays like a greatest hits collection from the series. If it’s a zombie-centric moment from the show that’s etched in your brain, it’s probably included in Dead Inside. The “Don’t open, dead inside” door in the hospital, the “bicycle girl” zombie, the tank that Rick takes refuge in, the well zombie, the barn, it’s all included. The only thing that’s missing is a room that you stand in for an hour yelling “Sophia!” Ah well, there’s always next year.

One of the biggest things that’s always on my mind when I’m watching "The Walking Dead" is how bad it always must smell in that universe. I mean, rotting corpses everywhere, no easy access to personal hygiene; it must reek to high heaven at all times. And, well, John Murdy and his team are a detail-oriented bunch of guys. In certain rooms of the maze, they’ll be pumping in a scent called “dead body”, which I’m sure is lovely.

Even out in broad daylight, with a fairly large group of other people, The Walking Dead: Dead Inside proved to be a pretty creepy experience. At one point during the tour, a member of the crew popped through a door, attempting to get a jump out of the group. And it worked. Several people on the tour got a good scare out of it. Not me, though. I’m a tough guy.

I can’t wait to walk through this thing with a full cast, authentic sound effects from the show, and in pitch black darkness. It should be an incredibly intense ride. A real zombie apocalypse may never happen, but this is the next best thing.

Okay, maybe I jumped a little. Don’t tell anybody.

Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights starts on September 21st and runs through Halloween.

Tickets and vacation packages are on sale now. Details on “Halloween Horror Nights” are available at Halloween Horror Nights.com. Updates from Creative Director John Murdy can be found on Twitter, as he reveals a running chronicle of exclusive information. “Halloween Horror Nights” maze announcement videos can be seen at Universal Studios Hollywood’s YouTube Channel.

Exorcism Fails! Possession Continues to Grasp the Box Office!

Exorcism Fails! Possession Continues to Grasp the Box Office! The weekend after Labor Day is traditionally one of the least movie-going weekends of the year, and this year that tradition held true. That’s good news for The Possession as it held the top spot as the most watched movie of the least watched weekend.

The Sam Raimi Ghost House-produced The Exorcist with a Hasidic twist flick The Possession came in #1 for the second weekend in a row with another $9.5 million. That brings its total to $33 million thus far. According to Box Office Mojo, the drop was only 46%, a pretty darn good hold for a horror movie in its second week. No surprise to hear there’s already talk of a sequel.

ParaNorman keeps chugging along with another $3.8 million, 6th place finish. It’s now up to just over $45 million.

Meanwhile, did you know that there was a new spy thriller starring future Superman Henry Cavill, Bruce Willis, and Sigourney Weaver opening this weekend? I wouldn’t be surprised if you replied “no” since the Lionsgate release got dumped into 1,500 theaters with seemingly no advertising whatsoever. It opened 13th with $1.8 million, which is less than $100,000 more than Raiders of the Lost Ark’s 257 screen IMAX release. I only even bring up the matter here to ask if anyone reading this saw a single trailer for The Cold Light of Day at the theater or on TV.

As for Branded, it, too, was dumped but only into 307 theatres, where it earned a pitiful $251,000 for an $818 per theatre average. It should be popping up on DVD shortly.

Next week: Resident Evil returns to the box office with the latest sequel. It will probably suck. It will probably make big money opening weekend. Then they’ll make another in a year or two, and we will go through this whole damn process yet again.

Synopsis
Heidi, a blonde rock chick, DJs at a local radio station and, together with the two Hermans (Whitey and Munster), forms part of the "Big H Radio Team".

A mysterious wooden box containing a vinyl record arrives for Heidi, "a gift from the Lords". She assumes it's a rock band on a mission to spread their word. As Heidi and Whitey play the Lords' record, it starts to play backwards, and Heidi experiences a flashback to a past trauma.

Later Whitey plays the Lords' record, dubbing them the Lords of Salem, and to his surprise, the record plays normally and is a massive hit with listeners.

The arrival of another wooden box from the Lords presents the Big H Team with free tickets, posters and records to host a gig in Salem. Soon Heidi and her cohorts find that the gig is far from the rock spectacle they're expecting: The original Lords of Salem are returning, and they're out for BLOOD.

TIFF 2012: First Clip From Aftershock Looks to Rattle You

More goodies are coming out of the Toronto International Film Festival. On tap for you right now is a clip from the next flick looking to start making some noise from Eli Roth's increasingly bloody camp! Check it out!

Aftershock, an earthquake thriller scripted by Cabin Fever and Hostel's Eli Roth, Nicolas Lopez, and Guillermo Amoedo, revolves around an insane asylum on an island, where the inmates escape during the quake.

It’s the next "Eli Roth Presents" film, and it marks the English-language debut from director Nicolas Lopez. His last two films, Que Pena Tu Vida and Que Pena Tu Boda, were the highest-grossing Chilean films of 2010 and 2011. Roth most recently produced The Last Exorcism, a microbudget film that grossed $70 million worldwide.

Roth and Lopez wrote the story together, inspired by the latter’s experience when an earthquake devastated Chile in 2010. The film is several weeks into production in Chile. In his first big acting role since Inglourious Basterds, Roth plays the lead. Among the other cast is Selena Gomez, who was in Chile doing a concert and came over to do a cameo. Lopez’s frequent collaborators Ariel Levy, Nicolas Martinez, and Lorenza Izzo also star along with Natasha Yarovenko, Andrea Osvart, and Miguel Asensio.

Exclusive: Paul W.S. Anderson Discusses Resident Evil: Retribution, Future Franchise Plans and More

$

0

It's hard to believe that it has been over 10 years since writer/director Paul W. S. Anderson first collaborated with his now wife Milla Jovovich on the surprise hit indie video game adaptation Resident Evil.

The film earned more than $100 million in box office receipts, more than triple the flick's budget.

This Friday, September 14th, the fourth sequel in the series - Resident Evil: Retribution - is set to invade theaters everywhere in 3D and reunites Alice (Jovovich) with many familiar franchise faces, including Michelle Rodriguez, Boris Kodjoe, Oded Fehr and Sienna Guillory, as well as introducing a handful of newcomers including Johann Urb, Kevin Durand, Li BingBing and Aryana Engineer.

During a recent press day for the film, Dread Central had the opportunity to chat exclusively with Anderson about Resident Evil: Retribution, why he feels like this one has some of the "scariest franchise moments ever" and whether or not he'd want to return for a sixth and final Resident Evil.

Check out our interview with Anderson below, and look for more on Resident Evil: Retribution all this week!

Exclusive: Paul W.S. Anderson Discusses Resident Evil: Retribution, Future Franchise Plans and More

Related Story: New Resident Evil: Retribution TV Spot Spreads the Virus

Dread Central: First of all, it was great to initially meet you back in December on set; seeing that world on the sound stage and now seeing how you brought it to life- I have to say that it really looked fantastic. Congrats on pulling that off!

Paul W.S. Anderson: Oh thank you very much! The crew hated me - HATED ME - because of all that shit flying around in the air (laughs). It was tough, though; plus the actors were freezing because there was real snow on the ground and we always kept it cold there (on the sound stage). It's nice to know all that paid off (laughs).

Dread Central: So what was the deciding factor in returning to direct Resident Evil: Retribution and what was different for you this time around, considering your involvement in this franchise since the very beginning?

Paul W.S. Anderson: I think part of it was because we had ended Afterlife with such a cool cliffhanger that I almost felt obliged to come back and pay off that build-up. Plus, when you end something with that kind of imagery, you'd be cheating fans if you didn’t deliver on the epic battle that it suggests, and I wanted to be part of that. So Retribution was always going to be a direct continuation from the last film. So in some ways directing was a linear decision.

What I do think IS unexpected in this movie is the returning characters from earlier in the franchise, all of whom died of course. So Michelle Rodriguez is back, Oded Fehr is back, a whole bunch of other characters... they're back, too, but this time they're not only playing their normal characters, they're playing other versions of them as well. So for me that was one of the most interesting things about Retribution.

That, plus Milla playing two very different versions of her Alice character, really made this appealing to me as a director. There's 'Battle Alice' who has the black suit on and is ready, right there beside you to fight, and then there's 'Suburban Alice' who has no weapons, no training and has a small child to take care of. Seeing 'Suburban Alice' sort of deal with this global outbreak is one of the strongest moments in the movie. I'm quite proud of this movie because I think it has the best jumps and scares of the whole franchise, and I think that comes partly from robbing Alice of all her powers and training that makes her very relatable to audiences.

Hands down, the 'Suburban Alice' section of Retribution has some of the scariest moments we've ever done in this series.

Dread Central: What I enjoyed about those scenes is that tonally they felt like a bit of a departure for the franchise; was that a conscientious decision on your part considering those were the moments where we're seeing Alice in an entirely new world?

Paul W.S. Anderson: Yeah, Resident Evil - at its heart - is science fiction/action horror so I do feel like there has always been horror in there. But yes, that section was a bit different because it was terrifying on an entirely different level than these movies have been before.

Dread Central: I know you never want to put the cart before the horse or anything, but if everything goes well with Resident Evil: Retribution, do you see there being potential for one more movie that would tie up Alice's story and this world?

Paul W.S. Anderson: I think we've always approached the Resident Evil movies with the idea that you can never take a sequel for granted because if this movie doesn't work, then there won't be a sequel so we always try to tell stories that have a satisfying ending. And I think that Retribution has a very good story conclusion to it, but of course there's that little epigram at the end- THAT does suggest that there might be another movie. I mean, I would certainly like to make one because I feel like I would want to tie up this whole Resident Evil universe.

Dread Central: So has 'evil' really gone global then?

Paul W.S. Anderson: Evil really HAS gone global (laughs), and that's what I wanted to do with this movie: to make a truly epic post-apocalyptic movie that we could make on a grand global scale. We now have apocalypses spread around the globe in Retribution so now is definitely the time for mankind to fight back big time, or otherwise it could mean the end.

Written and directed by Paul Anderson, Resident Evil: Retribution stars Milla Jovovich, Boris Kodjoe, Li Bingbing, Kevin Durand, Shawn Roberts, Michelle Rodriguez, Sienna Guillory, Johann Urb, and Colin Salmon. Look for Resident Evil: Retribution in theatres on September 14, 2012, from Screen Gems.

Lobo Gets a Logline

It's been a couple of months since last there was anything to report regarding the feature film debut of DC Comics' intergalactic badass bounty hunter Lobo, but alas, a logline has come. Read on for what the flick will be about!

According to It's on the Grid, "Lobo, a powerful alien bounty hunter, lands on Earth in search of four fugitives who are bent on wreaking havoc." Yep, that definitely sounds like something Lobo would do. A bit of a no-brainer, no? Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is slated to play the titular character.

Lobo is an alien that works as an interstellar mercenary and bounty hunter. Introduced as a hardened, rarely used hard-boiled villain in the 1980s, the character remained in limbo until his revival as an anti-hero biker in the early 1990s, when he became one of the most popular and bloodier characters in the DC Comics stable.

The character also appeared in a short film played by Andrew Bryniarski (Leatherface in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake). Check it out below.

The Walking Dead: Tour the Season 3 Prison Set; Q&A with Cinematographer Rohn Schmidt

We have a couple of cool things to kick off the week for fans of "The Walking Dead": First, executive producer Robert Kirkman takes us on a tour of the prison setting featured in Season 3, and next is a Q&A with director of photography Rohn Schmidt.

Check out the video now to see the cells and prison yard up-close and to find out how the set department created a "fake nasty toilet."

In the following Q&A Schmidt describes the difference between shooting the prison and Woodbury and explains why he'd rather be stuck in a prison with inmates instead of walkers.

Q: There are two main set-pieces this season: the prison and Woodbury. Which most excites you as a cinematographer?

A: I guess you could say the prison. As a cinematographer and just by nature, it means you've got very strong graphics there. Last year we had Randall tied up in the shed, and it was just this very sharp, angular, graphic, black-and-white lighting, and I kind of saw what the prison was going to look like, so I was looking forward to it.

Q: Do you have any visual tricks for distinguishing the two locations?

A: Yes. I tried to create a contrast between the town of Woodbury, which is kind of like a fantasy world with a dark undercurrent to it. It's kind of a little bit too pretty, so we've been using lower film stock to have less grain and look less gritty and raw. Then when we're doing the final color for it, we're adding a little bit more flesh to the skin-tones of the actors... And then that contrasts with the prison world, which is very monochromatic, and it's still just a little dark and scary there. And the actors' faces are a little less colorful.

Q: Most of Season 2 was shot on location and outdoors. What's it like to finally be on a sound stage sometimes?

A: I love being on location. There's a great kind of energy and realism, and there's this authenticity there. That's what I really try to recreate on the sound stage, to just find ways to make things a little bit reckless, to do things that are not so perfect because it feels more real... I might flare the lens or have it a little bit too light or a little bit too dark. But, I have to say, a couple times we've been rained out of our exterior locations, and now we have a place to go to instead of just shutting down for the day. Or even if it's just too hot, it's nice to just have a little relief in the air conditioning.

Q: The barn burning in the Season 2 finale seems like it would be a cinematographer's dream. What was it like to shoot that scene?

A: Fire is always so dramatic and fun to shoot. It's tricky, it's dark, and it depends on how you expose it; it can look kind of white and not really threatening, and we certainly wanted a rich, red golden fire there. The way you achieve that on film is you have a very deep stock. It takes a lot of exposure. The scene looks as dark and in shadow as anything, but there's probably three times more light there. You'd walk up and think, "Oh my gosh, that is absolutely ridiculously bright," and by the time we exposed it correctly, it came out just right.

Q: This season we know the walkers are continuing to travel more in herds. Does this change how you shoot them as well?

A: Absolutely... It's kind of interesting now where they're becoming kind routine. Like swatting flies almost. Yes, they're dangerous, but the characters are used to them; they know how to deal with the zombies. It's more like a chore for them, and we shoot it like that sometimes, too. Let's hack this one, machete this one, and away we go.

Q: What's the number one photography trick that gives "The Walking Dead" its creepy, cinematic feel?

A: We try not to be too gimmicky with the photography, and that includes the lighting and the framing of the cameras. By grounding it in familiarity and a reality, then it gets scary because it's not too pretend. And that said, here's the contradiction: It is based on a graphic novel, which has really fantastic art in there. So in almost every episode, and hopefully in each scene, I do like to indulge in what I call "graphic novel shots" -- so something that's a little extreme, the camera's got a very wide lens or very high light or very low light. We try to use that as a spice, rather than a main dish.

Q: Would you rather be stuck in a prison with walkers or inmates?

A: I think the inmates. I'm very much a man of reason, so I'd rather have someone I could maybe talk with and negotiate with.
