Doctor Gash's Tip of the Scalpel - The Community Theater and the Bloodbath of '86

As horror fans, many of us remember the exact moment we fell in love with the genre. Whether it was the first time we were blown away by a particular film or got our first look at some of the characters that would go on to become icons of modern horror.

Our love of scary movies had to come from somewhere, and most of us can remember precisely when and where that was.

I recall it quite clearly…a normal summer 26 years ago. It would not appear to be a particularly outstanding season to the average person, but it was that summer, the Summer of 1986, and one small town movie theater, that forged my love of horror. And it is for that reason that we give a big Doctor Gash Tip of the Scalpel to The Community Theater and the Bloodbath of '86.

Doctor Gash's Tip of the Scalpel - The Community Theater and the Bloodbath of '86

Within my hometown of Catskill in upstate New York sits a non-descript brick building that blends in with the rest of the structures on Main Street. That building is The Community Theater. Now, needless to say, Catskill has never been known as a hotbed of horror, however, during the Summer of 1986, the screens in The Community Theater displayed unforgettable horrors that transformed my impressionable 12-year old mind into that of the horror fanatic you see before you today.

The first of the two screenings that comprise what I like to call The Bloodbath of '86 was Lamberto Bava’s Demoni, or as we know it, just plain old Demons. Although the movie was released in 1985, I distinctly remember it being 1986 when it came to Catskill. In fact, I remember it being June 6, 1986 (which a quick Internet search confirmed was a Friday night) when I attended the show. It did not go unnoticed that the date was (loosely) 6/6/6. Actually it was 6/6/86, but for an already terrified pre-teen brain, that was close enough to the number of the beast. Add to this the fact that I had no idea what I was in for…and what the hell was an Italian horror film doing in a theater with two screens which normally featured films like Crocodile Dundee and Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo? I was not prepared for this. All day long rumors of the movie floated throughout my school: "They say it’s the scariest movie ever!", "It’s the goriest movie ever! and the ever popular, "I heard people in the audience were throwing up!"

Of course, everything went as you would expect. I freaked out when Geretta Geretta turned into one of the creepiest, most blood-thirsty demons every presented on screen. I will never forget the reveal. One of my favorites of all time! She had just gone through the first phase of her transformation from movie-going hottie to partial demon when a pus-filled blemish on her face exploded. As you know, from there her other movie-going hottie friend comes into the bathroom to find her huddled in a stall, hiding her face. (Isn’t that the worst when they hide their face and you're expecting Geretta Geretta and, bang-o! you get full-on demonic insanity?!) Suddenly, she turns around and reveals what I believe is one of the most disturbing horror faces of all-time, and just like that, instant traumatization for an unsuspecting 12-year old.

Doctor Gash's Tip of the Scalpel - The Community Theater and the Bloodbath of '86

To refresh your memory, I've included this photo of the scene I just described. This is Geretta Geretta, just after she transformed (it’s not the claws or the mouth froth as much as the eyes in this pic that still scares the shit out of me). Her friend is apparently trying to cram her back into the bathroom stall and needless to say that doesn’t work and a world-wide demon pandemic follows shortly thereafter. And a theater full of 12-year old kids sat there, slack-jawed, watching the whole thing unfold. Good bye innocence of youth.

But if this wasn’t enough, if the assault of Demons on our small, unsuspecting town wasn't enough, there was a whole new trauma awaiting us just a few weeks later.

Much to my unbridled glee, on August 22, 1986 the Community Theater screened The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2: "After a decade of silence, the buzz is back!" A must see if there ever was one.

I was the first one in the theater. Literally the first person there. I sat and listened to fellow movie-goers approaching. However, instead of imagining happy audience members armed with popcorn and candy, I had myself nearly convinced that what I was hearing was Leatherface and the rest of the Sawyer clan coming to get me. I sat paralyzed in fear. However, in retrospect you've got to consider how ironic it would be if the killers from The Texas Chain Saw Massacre actually killed someone watching The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2? A little too ironic, I really do think.

Doctor Gash's Tip of the Scalpel - The Community Theater and the Bloodbath of '86

But, of course, it wasn’t crazy chainsaw killers coming. It was simply smiling, popcorn-toting movie-goers. But my pump was primed and I sat there, watched this sequel and thought it may be the most brilliant piece of art ever created. The initial scene drew us in with Leatherface sawing off the top of a guy’s head while they sped down the road in two cars side by side and we sat entranced right up to the point where Stretch goes off the deep end after dispatching of this new actor who blew our doors off. A man we would come to know and love as Bill Moseley. Upon re-watching the film years later (without the crippling pre-film thought of Leatherface disemboweling me) The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 was not exactly the opus I originally thought it was. But at that moment, in that theater, during the Bloodbath of 1986, it was perfect.

Somehow I managed to grow up and become contributing member of society. As readers of Dread Central, I'll assume you're like me. We all watched every horror movie we could get our hands on and listened to devil worshipers like Judas Priest and AC/DC and somehow we managed not to go on multiple-state killing sprees. But if ever there was an establishment trying to manufacture serial killers from America’s youth, it was The Community Theater during the Bloodbath of '86 and it's with great pride that we give them a Doctor Gash Tip of the Scalpel.

The Cabin in the Woods Beastiary Part 2 - The Zombie

Co-writers Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard's horror-comedy hit The Cabin in the Woods hits DVD and Blu-ray on September 18. Sure, the razor-sharp wit of the writing team was the driving force behind this film, but the army of monsters they unleashed made a great side dish.

And although we'd love to break down every single beastie on that white board for you, in the interest of time, we've picked out five of our favorites to whet your appetite for The Cabin in the Woods. Today's entrée is everyone's current darling: the zombie.

The Cabin in the Woods Beastiary Part 2 - The Zombie

Related Story: The Cabin in the Woods Beastiary Part 1 - The Werewolf

It wasn't long ago that vampires were the big shots of mainstream horror. Led by packs of vamps like the Twilight crew and "True Blood" bloodsuckers, vampires were everywhere. Then something happened, and it may very well have had something to do with a zombie outbreak in Atlanta. "The Walking Dead" certainly didn't create zombies, but it sure as hell helped to make them chic. "The Walking Dead" seemed to come at the perfect time, as across the country people had been staging zombie walks and all kinds of zombie-themed events for a while. The popularity of "The Walking Dead" just helped to up our shambling hordes over the top in popularity. It was the perfect storm of undeadness, and suddenly mainstream society embraced zombies.

Of course, we cannot even think to have an article on zombies without mentioning the man who basically created the zombie as we know it today, the incomparable George A. Romero. After being inspired by Richard Matheson's book I Am Legend, which is actually about vampires, Romero crafted his creature into what would become known as today's modern zombie (although in Romero's Night of the Living Dead, the term "zombie" is never used; rather, the creatures are referred to as ghouls).

Far from their humble beginnings around that rural farmhouse in Pennsylvania, the zombie has become a piece of modern culture. From the aforementioned television hit "The Walking Dead" to any number of films, books, comics, novelties and whatever else you can imagine, zombies are everywhere. The epidemic is truly upon us. And by all means, keep an eye out for the shuffling undead in The Cabin in the Woods; they are right in the center of one of the best laugh out loud moments in the film.

Alrighty, kids; it's time for an exclusive bit of eye candy! On tap for you right now is another look at Jennifer Lynch's new film Chained (review) that you won't find anywhere else. That is, of course, until someone snags it and then uploads it to YouTube. Sigh.

From the Press Release
Perhaps the most terrifying human relationship is the one between a serial killer and his target. But what if it starts that way and becomes something...more? From the visionary mind of director Jennifer Lynch (Boxing Helena, Surveillance, Hisss) comes the dark fable Chained, coming to Blu-ray™ Combo Pack and DVD October 2nd from Anchor Bay Films. With a stellar cast including Vincent D’Onofrio (Full Metal Jacket, Men In Black, “Law and Order: Criminal Intent”), Gina Phillips (Jeepers Creepers, “Ally McBeal”), Conor Leslie (“90210”), and Evan Bird (“The Killing”) with Jake Weber (Dawn of the Dead, “Medium”) and Julia Ormand (My Week With Marilyn, “Mad Men,” The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), Chained is an unforgettable ride into the darkness that can reside in the human heart – no matter what your age. The Chained Blu-ray™ Combo Pack and DVD also includes, as a bonus feature, the scene that prompted the MPAA to give the film an NC-17 rating! SRP is $26.98 for the DVD, and $29.99 for the Blu-ray™ Combo Pack.

Coming home from a routine trip to the movies, eight-year-old Tim (Bird) and his mother, Sarah (Ormond), are picked up by a psychopathic cab driver named Bob (D’Onofrio). It ends up being their last ride together. Bob murders the young boy’s mother and keeps Tim as his unwilling protégé, making him clean up the mess following each murder he commits. After a couple of aborted escape attempts, Bob chains Tim - now renamed Rabbit - allowing just enough length to move freely within the house. As the years pass, Bob starts instructing Rabbit, teaching him anatomy and human behavior. Now a teenager, Rabbit (Eamon Farren, X: Night of Vengeance) is slowly being pressed by Bob to start his own homicidal spree. Slowly but surely, he must soon choose whether to follow in Bob’s serial killer footsteps or make one final, desperate attempt to break free...

Bonus features on Chained Blu-ray™ and DVD include feature-length audio commentary by writer/director Jennifer Lynch and actor Vincent D’Onofrio; the alternate unrated version of “Mary’s Murder;” and the original theatrical trailer.

Texas Chainsaw 3D continues the legendary story of the homicidal Sawyer family, picking up where Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror classic left off in Newt, Texas, where for decades people went missing without a trace. The townspeople long suspected the Sawyer family, owners of a local barbeque pit, were somehow responsible. Their suspicions were finally confirmed one hot summer day when a young woman escaped the Sawyer house following the brutal murders of her four friends. Word around the small town quickly spread, and a vigilante mob of enraged locals surrounded the Sawyer stronghold, burning it to the ground and killing every last member of the family – or so they thought.

Decades later and hundreds of miles away from the original massacre, a young woman named Heather learns that she has inherited a Texas estate from a grandmother she never knew she had. After embarking on a road trip with friends to uncover her roots, she finds she is the sole owner of a lavish, isolated Victorian mansion. But her newfound wealth comes at a price as she stumbles upon a horror that awaits her in the mansion’s dank cellars…

Former Leatherface Andrew Bryniarski Exhonorated! All Charges Dropped! Reunited with Puppies! Here at Dread Central we're always happy to see justice be served and that's exactly what happened for Andrew Bryniarski (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning) as all charges of animal cruelty have been dropped.

TMZ reports Bryniarski has been vindicated! Days after the actor was busted for animal cruelty, the charges have been dropped. According to law enforcement sources the Santa Monica City Attorney decided to let the case go because the 25 dogs they found in Bryniarski's RV all checked out "healthy and happy."

Previously Bryniarski insisted he was merely running a mobile adoption center for the dogs, and said they were in good health and well fed. Now, he plans to reunite with the dogs as soon as the shelter opens this morning - and tells tells TMZ that he will continue operating the adoption agency from his RV... just not in Santa Monica.

Good on you, Andrew! So happy to hear. Now then... to that prick of a neighbor who falsely called the police on you for inconveniencing them by daring to park an RV in Santa Monica where they could see it... from animal lovers everywhere... GO FUCK YOURSELF! Thanks.

Michael Dorn Clings On to Castlevania Role

We've been talking about a film version of the Konami video game Castlevania for what feels like forever now, and finally some news has come from a rather unexpected place. That's just how it is sometimes. Read on!

Michael Dorn – the actor best known for his portrayal of the Klingon Worf in the “Star Trek” series – revealed on the Nerdist Podcast that he is playing a role in an upcoming Castlevania movie.

As transcribed by StarTrek.com and reported by The Verge, Dorn revealed (at 31:20) that he is working on a movie based on the popular video game.

People have been trying to get this thing done for a long time and they finally got the producers together that want to do it,” he said.

They finally got the OK from the owners, and so they’re doing that. It’s a fun little part. It’s four days, and I’m playing a werewolf that’s been around for a gajillion years who works for this vampire. It’s not too far from Worf because there’s a lot of killing and jumping and sword fights and everything. So that’s what I’m doing now.

The project centers on the battle between Dracula and the Belmont clan of vampire hunters in a labyrinthine fortress in the Carpathian mountains.

More as it comes.

HBO and Guillermo del Toro Open The Nutshell DiariesYou know what Guillermo del Toro needs? More projects, man! If we didn't know any better, we'd swear the guy has a secret factory somewhere that does nothing but pop out clones to help him juggle multiple projects.

According to THR, HBO has optioned Corinne May Botz’s The Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death, a Hitchcockian drama about a small-town housewife who becomes obsessed with solving brutal crimes. Del Toro will serve as an executive producer as well as director on the project, with novelist Sara Gran (“Southland”) on board to write and co-executive produce.

Book Synopsis:
The Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death offers readers an extraordinary glimpse into the mind of a master criminal investigator. Frances Glessner Lee, a wealthy grandmother, founded the Department of Legal Medicine at Harvard in 1936 and was later appointed captain in the New Hampshire police. In the 1940s and 1950s she built dollhouse crime scenes based on real cases in order to train detectives to assess visual evidence. Still used in forensic training today, the eighteen Nutshell dioramas, on a scale of 1:12, display an astounding level of detail: pencils write, window shades move, whistles blow, and clues to the crimes are revealed to those who study the scenes carefully.

Corinne May Botz's lush color photographs lure viewers into every crevice of Frances Lee's models and breathe life into these deadly miniatures, which present the dark side of domestic life, unveiling tales of prostitution, alcoholism, and adultery. The accompanying line drawings highlight the noteworthy forensic evidence in each case. Botz's introductory essay, which draws on archival research and interviews with Lee's family and police colleagues, presents a captivating portrait of Lee.

More on this one as we get it.
