Chuck Actress Yvonne Strahovski Talks I, FrankensteinWe have some quickie news coming in for I, Frankenstein. Sitcom favorite Yvonne Strahovski ("Chuck", Killer Elite) recently offered hungry fans a little insight as to whom she'll be playing in the flick and whether or not she'll continue to keep you in stitches.

"I'm flying in a couple of weeks to Australia to shoot another movie with Aaron Eckhart, which I'm really excited about, called I, Frankenstein," she tells MovieWeb. "It's going to be sort of an action-drama-romance type movie. I play a scientist, and I think I'm changing up my accent. I'm going to be British in this one, which is nice for a change. I've been an American for so many years now (laughs). It's kind of a modern take on the original (Frankenstein) story. There will be some romantic elements, I think it's safe to say that much."

I, Frankenstein stars Aaron Eckhart who plays Adam, the Frankenstein monster, along with Bill Nighy and Socratis Otto. The film was written and is to be directed by Stuart Beattie and is based on a graphic novel by Kevin Grevioux, co-creator of the Underworld franchise. Lionsgate will distribute the film in the United States, Lakeshore will handle international sales, and E1/Hopscotch will distribute in Australia. A U.S. release is slated for February 22, 2013.

Lakeshore's Tom Rosenberg, Gary Lucchesi, and Richard Wright will produce with Hopscotch's Andrew Mason, while Grievoux will exec produce with Hopscotch's Troy Lum. Lionsgate exec Michael Paseornek will oversee the project for the studio.

The River Producers Shed a Bit More Light on the Series; Info on an Austin, Texas Screening

0
0

Over the past several days you've probably noticed an increase in television coverage in the media, and that's because the TCA (Television Critics Association) is currently holding its Winter 2012 Press Tour. As a result, we have some news out of ABC with regard to its upcoming series "The River" along with information on how you can attend a special advance screening of the pilot in Austin, Texas.

We suspect there will be a few other special screenings around the country as well in the coming weeks ("The River"'s 8-episode Season 1 debuts February 7th, 2012), and as we learn more, we'll be sure to pass on the info. For now, though, here's what you need to know about the Austin event:

WHEN: Thursday, January 19th @ 9PM

WHERE: Alamo Drafthouse (South Lamar Location), 1120 S. Lamar Blvd.

WHAT/WHO: FREE giveaways and a Q&A with writer/executive producer Oren Peli (Paranormal Activity)

Click here for more info and to register to attend.

Now, back to the show itself. Per Examiner.com, Oren Peli shared with television critics at ABC's TCA panel in Los Angeles that the idea for "The River" was initially a simple film about a missing documentary crew in the rain forest and the team that heads down to find them. It was always intended to be "found footage" style, utilizing certain characters as cameraman to see their reactions and provide an "in the thick of the action" vibe for the audience. But it wasn't until an off-the-cuff discussion with his director on Paranormal Activity 2 that it became a television series. With a standing offer from Steven Spielberg to "do a show together," Peli pitched it to Dreamworks, ABC picked it up last May, and the rest is history.

As for limiting it to just 8 episodes out of the gate, the producers want to ensure fans can easily follow the overall mythology arc for the characters while also believing the series holds up as an "individual horror movie every week". As an example, Michael Green feels the show is more similar to the tone of a show like "The X-Files" than "Lost".

"What makes the difference between a great horror movie and a great horror television show is actually caring about the people," Green offered, adding that although characters will come into peril often and some may not make it out alive, their mentality is not that any are "expendable." "My philosophy in television is 'Treat every script like your last because you never know when it might be.' We don't leave a lot of cards on the table," Green admitted, regarding deaths in the series.

Zack Estrin added that "The River" is pulling from real legends and lore from the Amazon jungle. Everything from ghosts and supernatural elements to the scariness of the individuals on the rescue team and how they may respond when fear sets in. "They are all themselves as mysterious as the jungle," Estrin teased. "They all have some secret gifts that will come out."

"The River" stars Bruce Greenwood, Leslie Hope, and Joe Anderson. Jeff Galfer and Thomas Kretschmann co-star in the ABC Studios television project produced by Oren Peli and his Paranormal Activity franchise collaborators Jason Blum and Steven Schneider. The pilot episode was directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (The Orphan, House of Wax).

Synopsis
Famed explorer Dr. Emmet Cole (Greenwood) went looking for magic deep in the uncharted Amazon and never returned. The shocking truth about his disappearance is out there, somewhere, just waiting to be discovered. To the millions of kids who grew up watching his nature show, Dr. Cole was a hero. To his own son, Lincoln (Anderson), he was more of an enigma. Now, six months after he vanished, Lincoln is finally ready to bury the past when Dr. Cole's emergency beacon suddenly goes off. At the urging of his mother, Tess (Hope), Lincoln reluctantly joins her on a search for his father. To fund the rescue, they agree to let Dr. Cole's cagey ex-producer, Clark (Paul Blackthorne), film the mission documentary-style. The mixed crew of old friends and new acquaintances includes the sexy and resourceful Lena (Eloise Mumford), loyal mechanic Emilio (Daniel Zacapa), and lethal bodyguard Captain Kurt Brynildson (Kretschmann).

Exclusive Video Interview: Ti West and Sara Paxton Talk The Innkeepers, Real-Life Ghosts and More!

Generally, most of us would hightail it home if we were staying somewhere that's also occupied by ghosts, but not writer/director Ti West. After finding out that the hotel he and his crew were residing in while shooting his 2009 flick The House of the Devil was truly haunted, West thought all the spooky shenanigans at the Yankee Pedlar Inn would be great for a follow-up effort, and thus was born The Innkeepers.

In the film, which is currently on VOD and hits limited theaters on February 3rd courtesy of Magnet Releasing, we meet Claire (Shark Night 3D's Sara Paxton) and Luke (Pat Healy), who are tasked with watching over the Yankee Pedlar Inn during the hotel's final weekend of operation. The two are novice ghost hunters who up until the final weekend had no idea just how haunted their workplace really was. Forced to uncover the truth about the Inn's dark past, the pair must work together in order to survive their last weekend at the Yankee Pedlar; if they fail, they may end up another otherworldly guest doomed to roam the halls of the haunted hotel.

Recently Dread Central sat down with writer/director West and The Innkeepers co-star Paxton to talk about their experiences making The Innkeepers, the trials of trying to cast an 'aging actress' role and their thoughts on real-life ghosts.

West also teased us a bit about his contribution to the upcoming V/H/S alongside fellow filmmakers Adam Wingard, David Bruckner, Glenn McQuaid, Joe Swanberg, and Radio Silence, which is set to premiere at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival in the coming weeks.

Check out our video interview with West and Paxton below, and make sure to check out The Innkeepers now that it's available on Magnolia On Demand. For those of you who prefer to get spooked while watching movies on the big screen, don't forget you can experience The Innkeepers for yourself once the flick hits limited theaters on February 3rd.

Anna Fricke and Jeremy Carver Talk Being Human Season 2 (Part Two)

0

Anna Fricke and Jeremy Carver Talk Being Human Season 2 (Part Two)Last week we brought you Part 1 of an in-depth interview with "Being Human" executive producers Anna Fricke and Jeremy Carver, and as promised, we now have Part 2 ready for your reading pleasure. Fricke and Carver continue discussing what we can expect in Season 2, if any other creatures make an appearance in the series, the ins and outs of vampire politics, and lots more!

Q: Some of the fun of the show has been seeing what carries over from other vampire, werewolf, and ghost stories and also where you guys decide to take the lore of these three monsters with your own original spin - whether it's powers or debunking myths or what have you. How much do you get to play, or how much do you enjoy playing, with the traditional knowledge of these monsters and then adding new stuff to it?

Jeremy Carver: Well, it's always a balance, right? Because there are certain expectations. Part of the fun that goes back to the BBC series was particularly how they played with the vampires in that they could exist in sunlight, etc. And staying with the BBC version, they took great, great liberties with their ghost character, Annie. Not only could she touch things, but she could be seen by people if I'm not mistaken. I think in their Season 2 she's totally able to be seen by folks.

Anna Fricke: Yes, she is.

Jeremy Carver: We took our ghost character in much smaller steps, but you'll remember at the end of last season one of the sort of immediate good-bad things that happened after Sally missed her door was that she discovered she was able to connect more to earthbound objects, which of course also implies that she is more earthbound now. So we'll see in Season 2 Sally is able to basically interact with inanimate objects more, but we get a huge kick it out. One of our favorite, if not the most favorite, scene from Season 1 was Josh and Aidan in the bathroom in Episode 7 when Aidan has that reaction to garlic. We spun that to be the garlic doesn't actually ward off vampires, but it was something that if a vampire eats garlic, it would expose him even more.

Anna Fricke: We always tried to take the lore and just do what makes sense to us. We like to be able to follow it in a way that is going to make sense to us in a logical way. And like we said earlier, we have some new writers, and they span from huge genre geeks to straight-up character writers. And so we'll have a lot of notions flying around the room. And there's always one guy who's like the BS detector, and it would be like, "Does this make sense to you?" So we all have a lot of notions that we like to play with, but we try to rein it in and make sure that it's following some kind of logic that keeps with what we set up before. We tried to be careful about that.

Q: Is there any chance that you'll be looking at other kinds of monsters, variations, etc., or are we going to be rooted basically with these three monsters through the series?

Jeremy Carver: Well, I wouldn't speak for the whole series, but I'll speak for the season in that this season you're going to see variations like I was trying to say before. You're going to see variations of the species we've already introduced, but we're not necessarily seeing new monsters. You might see a third cousin type of werewolf that you have seen before or it's in the same family tree of monsters, but we're not introducing, for example...

Anna Fricke: Fairies. [everyone laughs] It's a tough call, though, because once you're in a supernatural world, you're saying that vampires and werewolves exist, but you don't have to say other things do also. But we're not closed.

Jeremy Carver: No, no, as a series notion we're definitely not closed to it.

Anna Fricke: As a series notion we're totally open to it, but we're not going to see that this season.

Q: How much are we going to see Terry Kinney as Hegeman, and will we get more information about the Dutch?

Jeremy Carver: Re the second question, I think the Dutch play a pretty big role; we'll be introducing new Dutch characters this season. And as for Terry Kinney, you'll definitely be seeing him - he will be involved in a very explosive storyline kicking off our season.

New Season 2 Cast Photo for Syfy's Being Human

Q: You mentioned the vampire politics that we've seen so far, and we're going to see more of that. We've seen versions of that in other stories like "True Blood", and we've gotten other versions of vampires and supernatural creatures in "Teen Wolf" and the Twilights and all of the different types of stories that are out there now. What efforts are you making to differentiate your supernatural creatures from all of those other versions?

Anna Fricke: Well, just speaking to the vampire politics question first - and I wish I could use a different term than "politics" because it sounds like it's so dry, which it's not - for me it makes sense that vampires do have a structure because they are this sub-culture that has existed for thousands of years and they have to have their own sort of rules and society so that makes sense to me. In terms of how it's differentiated, how the creatures are different, I'm just trying to focus in on what the question is. Because I'm a huge fan of all those shows so I'm aware of what you're talking about, but are you asking how we differentiate our monsters?

Q: Yes, because there are only so many different things that you can do with vampire lore as your starting point. What efforts are you making to not get lost in the shuffle and not be like all of the others?

Anna Fricke: I think what we try to do most, and what we always try to focus on, is the core of the show, which is "being human". Which is sort of keeping everything grounded on an emotional level for these characters and keeping them in touch with their humanity and trying not to get too caught up in fantastical or arch storytelling, right? And even in terms of the Mother character we have, who is sort of like a Queen Elizabeth character in this vampire society, she and her daughter are actually a biological mother and daughter, meaning that she turned her own daughter into a vampire. And so [that's] something I think sets the show apart a little bit in that there are actual blood ties there.

Jeremy Carver: Yes, I think Anna's hitting on it nicely. It's not necessarily a question of how do our politics differ, but how do our characters differ? When we introduce this sort of new line on the vampire hierarchy, we do so by focusing very heavily on the characters themselves. We have this mother and daughter who have a very, very, very complicated mother-daughter relationship spanning hundreds and hundreds of years, and we had to deal with the "politics" underneath it all and above it all, and affecting all of it is the relationship between this mother and this daughter, who Anna noted are actually biological mother and daughter from, again, hundreds and hundreds of years ago.

So while we're dealing with their very complicated relationship, Aidan himself, as the season progresses, will realize has an extremely complicated relationship with each that spans back decades that he has to navigate while, again, always sort of trying to acquire his freedom, which was promised to him at the beginning of this new season.

Anna Fricke: I think what sets this show apart from some of these other genre shows, again of which I'm a big fan, is that they - our monsters - are trying their best not to get enmeshed with their other monsters. You know, Aidan sort of wants nothing to do with the other vampires, Josh wants nothing to do with the other werewolves, and Sally just wishes she had taken her door. And all they want, just to hit it home, is to be human. And so they're always trying to do that, trying to have human relationships, trying to have normal lives. I think that ultimately is what differentiates it.

Anna Fricke and Jeremy Carver Talk Being Human Season 2 (Part Two)Q: With the introduction of the mother and daughter storyline, does that mean we're going to be locked in Boston for the whole season, or are we going to get out more this year?

Jeremy Carver: I don't know that…well, let me think. Let me unpack that question for a second. In the general sense, yes, we are mostly in Boston as our setting this year. There's no packing the family roadster and going to Orlando for an episode.

Anna Fricke: But we do see different places in flashbacks and like that.

Jeremy Carver: Yes, we're largely in and around Boston again, and I think this year a lot of the departure from Boston proper would be, as Anna was hinting at, that we have a large number of flashbacks that pretty much span the globe in terms of where they take us. So that's one of the ways that we sort of broaden the scope of the places we're visiting this year, through the past.

Q: Earlier last season we met Josh's sister, Emily, and she was the only gay character on the show. So I was wondering if this season we're going to see more diversity in terms of race and sexuality.

Anna Fricke: Yes, actually, we are trying to make a point of that, and one thing - and this is a small thing - we wanted to sort of make a point about is that even in the vampire feeding world, men aren't always feeding off of women and women feeding off of men. We wanted to mix that up a little bit more and show that it's a free-for-all. There definitely is more diversity...

Jeremy Carver: And we can look forward to Emily making a return.

Anna Fricke: Yes, Emily is also coming back.

Jeremy Carver: But in terms of additional gay or lesbian characters, I'm blanking on if there's more or we just continue… What do you think?

Anna Fricke: No, I don't think there are.

Jeremy Carver: I don't think we specifically identify anyone new as gay or lesbian this season.

Q: So how do you find the right mix of drama, comedy, sci-fi and what level of darkness to use when working on this? And do you have a favorite type of thing to write?

Anna Fricke: I think a lot of that comes from our writing staff; we have a great mix. And our favorite type of show is something like "Friday Night Lights" or early seasons of "Rescue Me" - you know, [when] you're telling serious stories with a heartbreaking quality that have real humanity and humor infused. That's the kind of storytelling we love - dark comedy I think is what we are the most comfortable with. And that's the kind of voice we look for in our writers, who are all wildly talented, and that's what we look for when we're going over the script. Any time we have a really intense scene, we try to put in an inappropriate joke… you know, gallows humor.

Jeremy Carver: Both of us are just enormous fans of wild swings, frankly sometimes wildly inappropriate swings, between humor and a true sort of pain, and I would go further to say that for me I think the best humor springs from pain. So I think the core of the show are three characters who are in pain when you strip it all away because they are all what they don't want to necessarily be. So when you start with that as your touchstone, I think it's a little bit easier to find that mix. But it's something that we are ever vigilant about maintaining because it's just to us what strikes the most natural tone for our show.

Q: You said that most of the season takes place in Boston. Do you guys ever actually film around Boston, or is it all in Canada?

Anna Fricke: We did do some pickup shots and some footage in Boston. Last year we were able to get a little side crew up there - down there rather. But no, we mostly are filming in Montreal. We try to get to Boston if and when we can, just for some establishing shots and stuff like that, but we have to stay around Montreal.

Q: Can you talk a bit about the group of werewolves we've seen in the promos that are kind of "want-to-be werewolves rather than human" and how they're going to affect Josh?

Anna Fricke: We thought it would be interesting [since] Josh is so set on being human and curing the werewolf curse to explore the idea of monsters who don't view themselves as monsters. Basically, these werewolves see being a werewolf as their natural state, and they feel more comfortable in that way. And we sort of likened it to transgender people who really, firmly believe that they should have been born a different way and they're just trying to make that transition. That's kind of how we approached those characters. We just wanted to show a different point of view than the one that Josh has, which is, "I'm cursed, I hate it, I just want to be human." We wanted to show the opposite side of that spectrum. Someone who actually feels trapped in their human body.

Q: I just wanted to ask, because I really like them, who comes up with the episode titles?

Jeremy Carver: We all do.

Anna Fricke: Yes, all the writers do. It's a pretty equal opportunity. We vote. So I'm glad you like them.

Our thanks to Anna and Jeremy for their time! Be sure to tune in to the Season 2 return of "Being Human" on Syfy next Monday, January 16th.

In "Being Human" leading normal lives is a lot harder than it looks for three roommates – vampire Aidan (Sam Witwer), ghost Sally (Meaghan Rath), and werewolf Josh (Sam Huntington) – who share their secrets and a Boston brownstone. The Season 2 action picks up nearly a month after last season’s explosive finale as the three continue to struggle with their supernatural double lives and discover that temptation truly is a beast!

Executive Producers are Michael Prupas, Adam Kane, Jeremy Carver and Anna Fricke (both of whom are also writers/showrunners), Rob Pursey, and Toby Whithouse. Irene Litinsky is Producer.

Anne Rice to Appear In-Store in San Francisco for The Wolf Gift Signing

Anne Rice's The Wolf GiftWe're just about a month away from the release of Anne Rice's upcoming return to the supernatural genre, The Wolf Gift, and while we await word of just how extensive a book tour the beloved author might embark upon in support of it, we do know of one location where she'll be making an appearance and signing: Books Inc. in San Francisco's Opera Plaza.

According to the Books Inc. website, the event is being held February 24, 2012, beginning at 7:00 pm (book signing only - guidelines will apply - check back for details).

Location: Books Inc. in Opera Plaza, 601 Van Ness, San Francisco, CA 94107; 415.776.1111

Synopsis:
A daring new departure and a whole new world — modern, sleek, high-tech, and at its center, a story as old and compelling as history — the making of a werewolf, re-imagined and re-invented as only Anne Rice, teller of mesmerizing tales, conjurer extraordinaire of other realms, could create it.

The time is the present.

The place, the rugged coast of northern California. A bluff high above the Pacific. A grand mansion full of beauty and tantalizing history set against a towering redwood forest.

A young reporter on assignment from the San Francisco Observer... an older woman, welcoming him into her magnificent, historic family home that he has been sent to write about and that she must sell with some urgency... a chance encounter between two unlikely people... an idyllic night — shattered by horrific unimaginable violence... the young man inexplicably attacked — bitten — by a beast he cannot see in the rural darkness... a violent episode that sets in motion a terrifying yet seductive transformation as the young man, caught between ecstasy and horror, between embracing who he is evolving into and fearing who — what — he will become, soon experiences the thrill of the wolf gift.

As he resists the paradoxical pleasure and enthrallment of his wolfen savagery and delights in the power and (surprising) capacity for good, he is caught up in a strange and dangerous rescue and is desperately hunted as “the Man Wolf” by authorities, the media, and scientists (evidence of DNA threatens to reveal his dual existence). As a new and profound love enfolds him, questions emerge that propel him deeper into his mysterious new world: questions of why and how he has been given this gift; of its true nature and the curious but satisfying pull towards goodness; of the profound realization that there are others like him who may be watching — guardian creatures who have existed throughout time and may possess ancient secrets and alchemical knowledge; and throughout it all, the search for salvation for a soul tormented by a new realm of temptations and the fraught, exhilarating journey still to come, of being and becoming, fully, both wolf and man.

Look for The Wolf Gift on bookstore shelves and in all online outlets on February 14, 2012.

Even More Found Footage for The Devil Inside DuoThe duo behind the much maligned The Devil Inside seem to be a hot commodity around Hollywood lately. Just yesterday it was announced that both director William Brent Bell and writer Matthew Peterman were getting set to work on a new film called The Vatican, and now there's talk of another flick being added to their rapidly filling plate.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sierra/Affinity and Incentive Filmed Entertainment are financing and producing the next horror pic from the team behind The Devil Inside, which opened to record-breaking business at the domestic box office last weekend.

Director Bell will direct the untitled project from a script he wrote with Peterman. Steven Schneider, producer of The Devil Inside, is producing the film with Peterman and Morris Paulson through their production company Prototype.

Bell will start shooting in April in Romania. What does that mean for The Vatican? Stay tuned!

The plot is being kept under tight wraps; however, Bloody Disgusting is reporting that the project is a werewolf film that takes place in a police station with the suspect turning into a werewolf. The film is expected to follow in the found footage style of The Devil Inside.

Steven Spielberg Won't Be in the Director's Chair for Jurassic Park 4

A few weeks ago we brought you an update from director Steven Spielberg pertaining to the possibility of another addition to the Jurassic Park franchise. The good news... it's still very much on track. The bad?

In a recent interview with Collider the acclaimed director dropped the following on dino-hungry fans:

"I can tell you that I’m not directing it. I’m producing it though.

It would have been great to have the man himself back in the chair for another romp with the raptors, but there's enough talent out there right now to pull off a new one.

Perfect world scenario - Being that Spielberg and Peter Jackson got so chummy during their stint together on The Adventures of Tin Tin, can you only imagine how insane they'd be together on Jurassic Park 4? We can only dream.

Exclusive Interview: The Devil Inside's William Brent Bell and Matthew Peterman Talk Controversial Endings, Sequel Potential and Upcoming Projects

It pretty much goes without saying that The Devil Inside's co-writer/director William Brent Bell and co-writer/producer Matthew Peterman are having one hell of a week. After seeing their independently made film open to a staggering $33.7 million, the pair have witnessed some passionate debates heat up online surrounding it, and they've also been announced as attached to two other upcoming horror projects. Of course we have the scoop on it all!

Dread Central sat down to chat with Bell and Peterman yesterday to hear their thoughts on the opening weekend success of The Devil Inside as well as the controversial "non-ending" of the film and what they have in store for fans with their upcoming genre projects.

Exclusive Interview: The Devil Inside's William Brent Bell and Matthew Peterman Talk Controversial Endings, Sequel Potential and Upcoming Projects

It had only been a week since we last spoke to Bell and Peterman at the Los Angeles premiere of The Devil Inside, and what a difference a week has made in the life of the filmmaking duo!

"This really has been a ridiculous roller coaster of a week," said Bell. "It's just hard to believe it all, really." Peterman added, "I think it's just incredible how our independent movie that we made for hardly any money has reached so many people and has gotten people talking passionately about the film - good or bad."

Speaking of good and bad, both Bell and Peterman discussed that they are well aware of the online fervor the ending of The Devil Inside sparked last weekend. "Personally, I think the abrupt ending adds to the authenticity because these movies aren't always a three-act structure kind of storytelling, and I think audiences aren't used to that. We just wanted to make an ending they wouldn't see coming so they could draw their own conclusions. I absolutely still stand by our ending."

"We honestly did expect that people would react to the ending in the movie, but we just never imagined it would be anything like this. It's incredible to see this kind of passion on both sides of the fence though," added Peterman.

"Non-ending" aside, we asked the pair if they have any plans for a sequel to The Devil Inside or if they've heard anything from Paramount regarding a follow-up film yet.

"We've got a bunch of ideas on where we'd like to go from here for a Devil Inside sequel, but there has been no announcement yet," explained Peterman. "I think we both know which direction the story should go from here, and we'd love to get the opportunity to do another one, definitely."

However, a sequel for The Devil Inside may just have to wait for a while because both Bell and Peterman are going to be pretty busy for the unforeseeable future after the announcement of two feature film projects this week. Bell briefly discussed the next religious-themed horror film he's going to be tackling: The Vatican.

Bell said, "The Vatican project was something Warner Bros. came to us about. David Cohen is writing it, and it's their first foray into smaller-budgeted movies so it should be fun. It's not going to be like this movie at all so don't expect to see the same stuff again either."

The other project announced this week involving Peterman and Bell was described as a found footage project involving a werewolf. We asked the duo if they could elaborate on any of the details at all.

"You know, we were originally going to work with producer Nick Meyers on The Devil Inside, but then things changed on that project," explained Peterman. "We knew we still wanted to work with him, and then this project came up. Our plan is that we're going to be heading to Romania and get the shoot done pretty quickly. It will be another faux-documentary style project, but it's going to be very different than anything fans have seen before. And I think it's going to be interesting to take a very well-known mythology like this and give it a realistic spin."

Bell said, "We've been working on this project for ten months now, and it's really incredible we finally get to make the announcement and that we're moving forward."

"To be honest, we did a movie a few years ago that we really didn't like very much so it feels incredible to be back working in the genre. It definitely feels like we're getting to fall in love with the genre all over again, too. We just want to be able to keep making horror films and offer up new twists for fans and think these new movies will do that," added Bell.

Special thanks to William Brent Bell and Matthew Peterman for taking the time to chat with Dread Central this week!

Master of Horror William Malone Talks Filmmaking - Past, Present, and Future

0
0

William MaloneWilliam Malone should have developed amour-plated skin by now if the barrage of undying criticism of his work is anything to go by. FeardotCom for instance, not totally without a bit of B-movie charm, provoked a critical fury that any filmmaker would find difficult to deal with. Recently Malone sat down with Dread Central to reflect on his career and also talk about what looks to be an interesting year ahead...

"Things are good," Malone told us."I've just finished a new script that I'm very excited about. I'm about to take it out to see if I can get the financing (always scary). It's interesting going through your questions as this has, of late, been a very introspective time for me. I've had a lot of time while writing to review my past efforts. This invariably leads to examining my methods and motives."

When asked if he looks back at his work very often and, if so, how happy is he with it all, Malone stated, "I can't say that I've ever been completely happy with anything I've done. There are always limitations. I guess the projects that I've considered the most successful at being what I started out to do have (oddly) been some of my TV work. There are various reasons for this. Mostly because I've wound up working on shows that have had a well-oiled machine working by the time I've gotten on them and producers who didn't really care what you did as long as you came in on time and on budget. It made it much easier to realize what I had in mind."

"To give you a more succinct answer, my favorites would be 'Only Skin Deep' from 'Tales from the Crypt' Season Six and 'Fair-Haired Child' from 'Masters of Horror' Season One. 'Masters of Horror' was great because I had 'final cut', a great script, and was able to use all the tools that I've trained for. With both 'Masters of Horror' and 'Tales from the Crypt', I really felt while making them that the forces of nature were on my side. Whether they were ultimately successful is not up to me to say. They were just successful for me."

"With my features everything is less clear-cut. I have very mixed emotions about them all. I like parts of all of them... and hate other parts."

We next moved on to FeardotCom and had to ask: The reviews for the film were pretty mixed. What are your thoughts on it?

"First I can say that I always hated the title, and I think it hurt the perception of the film. When I think of the film, it churns up a lot of things. There is an overwhelming feeling of melancholy that falls over me... FDC is probably the darkest movie I ever made on just about every level that you can think of. I think this is much of what its detractors are reacting to. I know many people rabidly hate it. When you get that kind of reaction, you have to think you've done at least something partially right, and there are many who love this film. If you don't like a film, usually you just walk away and forget it... but to get that kind of venom, you have to have struck a nerve. FDC is a very grim, dense film and designed as a 'tone poem'. If some of the readers are thinking 'squish him so he won't do that again', don't worry. I've been properly squished... It destroyed my mainstream career. I should hate it, but I don't."

This may be news to some of you, but if there was no Malone, Michael Myers may well have been a very different babysitter stalking madman. We asked him to elaborate a bit on this.

"I get asked about this a lot, and I wish I had some great story of its creation. The truth is it was a very minor event during my time at Don Post Studios [Ed. Note: a company most famous for creating rubber masks for commercial sale and use in movies]. Fearing that we were going to lose our license from Universal, which included a great deal of our output, we were looking for new characters to license. We actually wanted to put out the monsters from 'Star Trek', which included the Salt Vampire, the Gorin, and several others. To do that, we were contractually obligated to do Kirk and Spock. We got hold of life casts of the actors from makeup wizard Mike Westmore, I think, and I used those castings as a basis to sculpt Kirk and Spock. We couldn’t use the actual life masks as they would have been too small when reproduced as masks. Sometime later John Carpenter and several others came in and asked if we could paint one of the Kirk masks white and spray the hair black. The mask was pulled from the production line and taken back to the paint department. I don’t recall who actually painted it... it may have been [head painter] Rob Tharpe. Because it was not a standard paint job, it was painted with a special paint that was a good deal more durable than the usual paints. I know there are bunches of die-hard fans saying, 'He doesn’t know what he’s talking about' because the hair is not black in the film. The hair was painted with black lacquer and would have fallen off quickly. I noticed it when I went to see the film first run."

"In any case, I think it’s interesting that everyone thinks it’s so scary. It shows the power of suggestion and the power of a great director at the top of his game. The mask is really not scary at all. If anything, it’s just nondescript. It’s the context it’s placed in that makes it scary."

Next we queried Malone as to what horror flicks inspired him. It seems he follows some damn fine examples:

"I’m sure I’ve been influenced by everything I’ve seen. The filmmakers that stand out in my mind are F.W. Murnau -- the greatest director of all time as far as I’m concerned -- Billy Wilder, Ridley Scott, Gerd Oswald, The Bros. Quay, James Whale, Edgar G. Ulmer, and numerous others. I think individual films have influenced me more than particular filmmakers. It’s very difficult for filmmakers to be consistent due to the forces at work in the industry. Most fans don’t realize that, just like them, we have to pay the bills and often do things just to pay the mortgage. The chance to shine comes rarely. My favorite films would include Alien (1979), Frankenstein (1931), The Black Cat (1934), The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1919), Saw (2002), Nosferatu (1926), Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) , Forbidden Planet (1956), REC (2008), and many others, including a number of non-genre films. I’m also very struck by a lot of painters and sculptors. I love the work of Fuseli, Beksinski, Giger, to name a few. Filmmaking is really a wonderful medium because you can make use of so many different other disciplines and art forms... and of film, horror and science fiction are the best and great art when done well. What a joy to see a film made by someone who is really good at it... someone who brings a sense of wonder to their work."

In 2002, Malone, as the story goes, sat with horror maestros John Carpenter, Guillermo Del Toro, John Landis, Stuart Gordon, Mick Garris, Tobe Hooper, and Joe Dante for what proved to be a fruitful dinner evening. They conceived "Masters of Horror", a television series with episodes directed by an international and star-studded list of genre masters. We asked him his thoughts on his involvement in the series and his thoughts on being one of the "Masters", to which he responded, "I really don’t consider myself a master of anything. The whole 'Masters of Horror' series was really a wonderful thing to be a part of. How could you not be humbled by making films alongside such great company? I felt a tremendous weight of expectation placed on me. I did my best not to disappoint. I know that none of the 'Masters' take that title seriously. It started out as a joke made by Guillermo Del Toro at one of our dinners. Later it became a sales tool to get the series off the ground. I really have to thank Mick Garris for putting the series together, creating such a wonderful working atmosphere, and including me."

And similarly, we have to thank William Malone for taking the time to talk to us and wish him the very best with his new script – something which he advises us is ready for the less-than-pleasant search for financing! Keep it tuned here as things progress with the project.
