The highly anticipated flick Excision (Blu-ray and DVD review) is hitting home video tomorrow, and to prep you cats for the horrors to come, we have a brand new trailer on tap for you!

From the Press Release
On October 16th, Anchor Bay Films presents the harrowing coming-of-age horror film, and instant cult classic, Excision, from writer/director Richard Bates, Jr., which Sundance Channel deemed, “Without question the most mind-blowingly grotesque film to screen at this year’s fest.” Boasting an impressive and eclectic cast including AnnaLynne McCord (The CW’s “90210,” Transporter 2, Fired Up, FX’s “Nip/Tuck”), Traci Lords (Blade, Zack & Miri Make a Porno, Cry Baby), Ariel Winter (ABC’s “Modern Family”), Roger Bart (Hostel Part II, Law Abiding Citizen, American Gangster), Malcolm McDowell (The Artist, A Clockwork Orange, Rob Zombie’s Halloween, HBO’s “Entourage”) and cameos including Ray Wise, director John Waters, and Academy Award® winner Marlee Matlin, Excision comes to Blu-ray™ for an SRP of $24.99 and DVD for an SRP of $22.98.

Excision turned critics’ stomachs as well as heads, garnering much attention at festivals this past year. Noel Murray of AV Club calls it, “One of the damnedest ‘adolescent misfit’ movies you'll ever see -- for those who can stomach the splatter, that is,” and Chris Bumbray of JoBlo exclaims, “While it's more than a little sick, and will likely leave you queasy by the time the credits roll, Excision is nonetheless a truly unique horror ride into the scariest of all places- the mind of a teenaged misfit.” Excision holds a 94% “want to see” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Based on a short film of the same name, Excision follows a disturbed and delusional high school student, Pauline (AnnaLynne McCord), who, with aspirations of a career in medicine, goes to extremes to earn the approval of her controlling mother (Traci Lords). While dealing with being an outcast teenager and obsession over curing her sister’s cystic fibrosis, Pauline becomes continually deranged as her fascination with surgery and the human flesh grows into something abysmal and demonic.

Bonus feature on the Excision Blu-ray™ and DVD: audio commentary with writer/director Richard Bates, Jr., and AnnaLynne McCord.

When two biological researchers from France find a staggering level of toxicity in the water, they attempt to alert the mayor, but he refuses to create a panic in the docile town. As a result, a deadly plague is unleashed, turning the people of Chesapeake Bay into hosts for a mutant breed of parasites that take control of their minds, and eventually their bodies. Synopsis:
A reimagining of the classic horror tale about Carrie White (Chloë Grace Moretz), a shy girl outcast by her peers and sheltered by her deeply religious mother (Julianne Moore), who unleashes telekinetic terror on her small town after being pushed too far at her senior prom.

The quiet suburb of Chamberlain, Maine, is home to the deeply religious and conservative Margaret White (Moore) and her daughter, Carrie (Moretz). Carrie is a sweet but meek outcast whom Margaret has sheltered from society. Gym teacher Miss Desjardin (Judy Greer) tries in vain to protect Carrie from local mean girls led by the popular and haughty Chris Hargenson (Portia Doubleday, Youth in Revolt), but only Chris’ best friend, Sue Snell (Gabriella Wilde, The Three Musketeers), regrets their actions. In an effort to make amends, Sue asks her boyfriend, high school heartthrob Tommy Ross (newcomer Ansel Elgort), to take Carrie to prom. Pushed to the limit by her peers at the dance, Carrie unleashes telekinetic havoc. Brian De Palma’s 1976 film version of CARRIE earned Oscar nominations for stars Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie.

  • Exclusive: Writer/Director Richard Bates, Jr. Talks Excision, His Upcoming Horror Comedy and More

    $

    0

On Tuesday, October 16th, up-and-coming writer/director Richard Bates, Jr.'s cult classic in the making feature film debut Excision (Blu-ray and DVD review) is set to arrive on home video everywhere courtesy of Anchor Bay Entertainment.

Featuring "90210" star AnnaLynne McCord as awkward and angsty teenager Pauline, Excision also stars cult heroes Traci Lords and John Waters as well as Roger Bart, Ariel Winter, Malcolm McDowell, Marlee Matlin and Ray Wise. The film follows Pauline as her obsession with surgery and curing her younger sister, who suffers from Cystic Fibrosis, grows out of control, with the young starlet delivering one of the most remarkable transformative performances in quite some time.

Last week Dread Central had the opportunity to chat with Bates about adapting his provocative short film of the same name for the feature film version. During our interview we heard more from the first-time filmmaker on collaborating with both McCord and Lords as well as of his personal heroes, the iconic John Waters (and his signature mustache) and what's coming up next for him.

Read on for the highlights from our exclusive interview with writer/director Bates, and look for more with Excision co-star Traci Lords later this week!

Dread Central: So, I'm still trying to wrap my brain around this movie so congrats on making something so completely unforgettable; you definitely got under my skin but in a good way on this. Just where on earth did Pauline come from and what was your story process like considering you have two very different worlds juxtaposed against each other throughout the film?

Richard Bates, Jr.: Well, I have a pretty weird family so…(laughs); no, no- just kidding. Actually, I had my mom come out for a screening last night and she's not particularly fond of this movie, like, at all so I had an Excision poster printed up with a bunch of quotes from her that said funny stuff like "I'm proud of you but can you make the next one something I can show off to my friends?" or my favorite, which was "I guess people your age like this sort of thing."

So after the movie was done, I set up an autograph table for my mom to sign the posters for the fans and it was pretty great. But yeah, this one isn't a movie that my mom could sit through. Maybe the next one (laughs).

Dread Central: I never had the opportunity to see the short film, but it was one that a lot of people were talking about because of its festival run. Did you already have the feature film version done when you made that, or was this something that came about because of the success of the short?

Richard Bates, Jr.: I had the feature version done when we made the short, and the short version of Excision has the exact same beginning and end as the feature. When I originally made the short, everyone was excited that I had written a feature version because they wanted to see what was going to happen after where the short ended. Little did they know… right? (laughs).

But for me the heart of Excision is the story between this daughter and her mother, and that finale is the perfect representation of that; it's hands down my favorite moment of Excision, and what's really special about it is that it's the only time I think I show AnnaLynne and Traci touching, which speaks volumes about how that moment has impacted their relationship. It proves that this love between them is real even if they've both been nasty with each other the entire time; it was so powerful to me, and the way both of them [McCord and Lords] played it was absolutely perfect.

Dread Central: Let's talk about both ladies then- I thought they were incredible, and as someone who was once a teenage girl who lived to torture her mom, I related to this movie on so many levels. Well, except for all the blood and surgery stuff (laughs). Can you talk a bit about casting AnnaLynne and Traci and what you thought they brought to their respective roles in Excision.

Richard Bates, Jr.: AnnaLynne was brilliant in this movie; I really didn't have to do a whole lot of work with her at all. Originally I had intended to cast the actress who starred in the short film but things didn't work out, and by that point the script had been circulating around. I guess AnnaLynne had received the script and she called me out of the blue to tell me that she loved it, but I had no idea who she was.

When I looked her up and saw that she was on "90210," I really didn't know what to think because I never thought that girl could ever play someone like Pauline. But she wanted to take a meeting so I agreed to it; I'm so glad I did because when I met her, I realized she wasn't this 'starlet' like I thought she was; she was so ready for anything and I loved that. She even showed up to that meeting in character as Pauline so I knew she was really serious about this, and one of the things AnnaLynne shared with me was that she absolutely hated her belly button so I wrote that into the character.

With Traci, I met with her a few times before finalizing the script because I added in some personal touches to her character, Phyllis - the things about the terrible relationship with her mother - that were personal to Traci because had dealt with them in her own life. Also, I really wanted her for this role because she's always been known to play these wild and extreme characters, and I wanted to show that she could do different kinds of roles than maybe the ones she's offered usually. I think Traci also identified a lot with Phyllis' restrained demeanor, too, in some ways.

Dread Central: When I spoke to Traci, she mentioned that you were a huge John Waters fan; I'm guessing his role in Excision was pretty huge for you then?

Richard Bates, Jr.: Oh yeah, totally. It was so great; I'm such a huge geek over him so after Traci came aboard, I sent him a letter; and surprisingly, he was really responsive to the script and coming in to do a few scenes. He was really funny; he said to me, "I'll do it, Richard, but I won't fly coach and I won't shave my mustache." (laughs)

Dread Central: So what's coming up next for you then?

Richard Bates, Jr.: Well, my next project is this horror comedy hybrid that we should be shooting in Georgia in March. I can't say much about it, but just imagine the director of Excision was making his own Ghostbusters; it's going to be pretty crazy. I may even work with AnnaLynne again- I haven't approached her yet, though, but Matthew Gray Gubler, who is in Excision, will be in this next movie for sure.

    Synopsis:
Based on a short film of the same name, Excision follows a disturbed and delusional high school student, Pauline (AnnaLynne McCord), who, with aspirations of a career in medicine, goes to extremes to earn the approval of her controlling mother (Traci Lords). While dealing with being an outcast teenager and obsession over curing her sister’s cystic fibrosis, Pauline becomes continually deranged as her fascination with surgery and the human flesh grows into something abysmal and demonic.

World War Z - What Horrors Does the Trailer Hold?

    $

    0

Recently Coming Soon caught a look at the trailer for Paramount's upcoming flick World War Z, and we have to say after reading the footage description, our hopes are pretty high for this latest sliver of undead mayhem.

It begins with Brad Pitt's character sitting in traffic with his family. They're busy playing a game when a cop bashes on their window in a panic. Standing near the driver side window, the cop begs Pitt to stay in his vehicle and soon thereafter is pummeled by a bus careening out of control. An explosion erupts, and a mass of people race down the city streets. Pitt and his family hop into an abandoned RV, and we get a glimpse of the world in madness.

Beyond an unusual pair of eyes, we don't get a good look at World War Z's zombies, but the measures the uninfected take to reach safety might further confirm what last year's set footage revealed - that these zombies can run.

In the trailer gigantic hordes of people are scrambling for dear life. They're not just pushing and shoving each other out of the way, rather climbing on top of each other and manically hanging onto a hovering helicopter.

In one of the trailer's final shots, there's a mountain of people trying to climb over a wall that must be hundreds of wriggling bodies high. The material is dark and downright horrifying, not only showing what could happen should the undead invade on a physical level, but also reflecting the societal meltdown that would ensue and the pure chaos we'd be left with.

World War Z, based on the footage, looks to be well worth the wait.

The film hits theaters June 21, 2013.

Danny Trejo battles zombies! Bai Ling saves Hobbits! Monica Keena builds an ark! Dee Wallace eats Hansel & Gretel. The antichrist is born... again! It can only mean The Asylum has new trailers for its next five releases!

Get your first look at Rise of the Zombies, Age of the Hobbits, 40 Days and Nights, Hansel & Gretel, and 12/12/12 below.

Enjoy Thanksgiving because it will probably be our last, at least if anything visualized in the preview for 40 Days and Nights comes to fruition circa November 27th when the film washes ashore via DVD/VOD.

When a colossal tectonic shift causes the sea level to start rising, a microbiologist (Monica Keena, Freddy vs. Jason) gathers the DNA of as many species as she can, while the military creates an "ark" in a desperate attempt to preserve life on Earth.

Judging by the trailer, this variation of the story of Noah’s Ark owes less to the Bible and more to Roland Emmerich’s 2012.

The Asylum's 12/12/12Last year The Asylum made an Omen-esque horror movie based around the date 11/11/11. This year there’ll be a December 12, 2012, so you better believe they’ve made yet another Rosemary’s Baby-ish horror flick built around that date.

#HoldYourBreath director Jared Cohn handled writing and directing duties on this date with damnation.

When baby Sebastian is born on 12/12/12, everyone around him starts to die. Soon his mother realizes that her son is the spawn of Hell.

12/12/12 will be released on – you guessed it – 12/4/12. Wait. What? Not even seven days later when it’ll be 12/11/12?

With the first installment of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit being arguably the biggest blockbuster of the Christmas season, nobody should be surprised The Asylum is getting in on the action with its own version. Age of the Hobbits stars Christopher Judge of “Stargate SG-1” and Bai Ling, aka the insane hooker from Crank 2, as guardians of a race of little people whose name is, apparently, not copyrighted by the Tolkien estate as one might imagine.

In an age long ago, the last village of clever, peace-loving Hobbits is attacked and enslaved by the Java Men, komodo-worshipping, dragon-riding cannibals. Now the young Hobbit Goben, along with his father and sister, must seek help from the "giants" (human hunters) to find the Javas' lair and rescue the last surviving Hobbits, Goben's mother among them. In their quest to destroy the Javas, the heroic partnership of humans and Hobbits will transform both species forever.

My first reaction after watching this trailer is that somewhere in heaven Cirio Santiago is looking down and giving this film a great big thumbs up.

The Asylum already has its first film of 2013 in the can. No doubt capitalizing on the upcoming Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, their version of the classic fairy tale Hansel & Gretel is more of a modern retelling and forsakes the big screen version's over-the-top, f/x-laden, Stephen Sommers-esque action for more of a down-to-earth fright flick about two teenagers held captive in a house of cannibals led by Dee Wallace (The Howling, Gremlins).

In this modern retelling of the classic horror tale, teen siblings are enslaved by a psychotic recluse within her gruesome house of horrors in the woods.

Boo director Anthony Ferrante directs from a script by Jose Prendes, and I have got to say this looks really good. I don’t mean cheesy good or so-bad-it’s-good; I mean it looks like it has the potential to be a pretty damn good horror movie judging by the preview. Seriously, look for yourself.

Finally, we end at the beginning with the 30-second commercial Syfy has released promoting the October 27th premiere of Rise of the Zombies, The Asylum’s follow-up to last year’s Zombie Apocalypse, which was a big ratings hit for Syfy.

Nobody from Zombie Apocalypse returns (except the director), and I’m not even sure it’s meant to be a sequel. This time Danny Trejo (Machete, Predators), LeVar Burton (“Star Trek: The Next Generation”, “Reading Rainbow”), and Mariel Hemingway (Star 80, Bad Moon) star as survivors of the same/another zombie apocalypse trying to escape from Alcatraz in the San Francisco Bay.

This Asylum/Syfy team-up was originally produced under the title Dead Walking, but someone must have thought that was too mockbustery (or were a bit gun-shy after the whole Battleship/American Battleship/American Warships lawsuit this past summer). Personally, I much prefer Dead Walking over Rise of the Zombies simply because “rise”, “rises”, and “rising” are getting overused in movie titles the past few years.

Exclusive: Co-Writer/Director Sean Stone Talks Greystone Park

    0

Today co-writer/director Sean Stone's feature film debut, Greystone Park, hits DVD and Blu-ray courtesy of Xlrator Media. The found footage spookfest also stars Stone and his co-writer on the project, Alexander Wraith, and features a cameo by Sean's iconic father, Oliver Stone.

Recently Dread Central had the opportunity to briefly chat with Stone about the project, what inspired the story behind Greystone Park and more on the challenges he faced along the way while working on the project over the last several years.

Check out our interview with Stone below, and grab a copy of Greystone Park now that it's available everywhere!

Dread Central: So how did this project come about? Had you been fascinated by the paranormal before Greystone Park?

Sean Stone: No, no- this all came about because of Alex (Wraith); he had been talking about the supernatural for some time. I guess he's been going to tons of abandoned mental hospitals and Greystone over the years, breaking in and ghost hunting at these places. He's been doing it for years, and after he investigated Greystone, he came to me because of his experiences there alone one night.

When Alex went in there alone, it was kind of like "The Twilight Zone"; it's easy to get lost, you see shadows everywhere, and not just regular shadows either, but shadows that seem to move on their own. So I was definitely skeptical about it all until we went out one night to Greystone; the very next morning I was writing the script. That first dinner scene in the movie was very similar to how our initial conversation went, too, and even the story my dad tells at the table is a story he's shared with me before.

Dread Central: How did the filming process go then? I know this was a movie you guys had made independently- did you face any challenges along the way?

Sean Stone: You know, I really thought when we started Greystone that it was going to be one of these amazing and fun experiences where I just grab a video camera and go shoot a movie with my friends in a haunted hospital- I just had no idea what we'd be in for.

We ended up going through this three-year process of just getting the movie made and out the door; we lost financing a few times along the way, and we lost our location because we thought we were going to shoot in the real Greystone at one point but we couldn't get permission. There were just so many issues so by the finish line you're exhausted. It was not an easy process, but it was worth it in the end because I definitely learned a lot about the good and the bad to independent filmmaking and just what it takes to get a movie made and sold these days.

Dread Central: Did your dad give you any advice along the way?

Sean Stone: A little here and there maybe, but he was pretty hands off throughout the entire process. He watched the first cut and really liked it, but after that he let me do my own thing. I've learned a lot by watching him and being a part of his movies for so many years, but I think for Greystone Park it was important that I learned to stand on my own two feet, which is what I did.

Dread Central: You wore a lot of hats on Greystone Park; was it difficult finding a balance being in front of and behind the camera at all?

Sean Stone: You know, it was and it wasn't; I guess when you're holding the camera, you have different levels of attention going on so you can lose yourself in the process sometimes or lose track of what you need to be focusing on as a director. It's not easy when you have to worry about whether or not your actors are in the right spot, if you're in the right spot, if your DP on the other camera has got the right shot and whether or not everything is going to happen the way you want it to; but thankfully everyone came prepared and we just went for it on this. I loved the challenge of it all.

Dread Central: So any future plans in the horror genre?

Sean Stone: Maybe down the road, but the next thing I'm directing is a 70's/80's action hero comedy project, which should be a lot of fun. I'd definitely love to explore the demonic subgenre of horror in the future though- that stuff really fascinates me.

Check out Greystone Park on Facebook for more info about the flick!

i>Based on true events, the film follows three aspiring filmmakers trying to document unexplainable events in an abandoned insane asylum known as Greystone Park. Urban legend has it that anyone who ventures into the forsaken hospital will suffer the consequences and face their own horrors. The trio stumble across a mysterious realm of escaped patients, ghosts, and demonic shadows as they try to uncover the truth behind Greystone Park.

Greystone Park stars Sean Stone, Oliver Stone, Alexander Wraith, Antonella Lentini, John Schramm, Monique Zordan, and Monique Van Vooren.
