Flesh-Eating Zombies Take on Exotic Dancers in 2D and 3D in Big Tits Zombie

Some days I just shake my head at the things that land in my inbox. Following close on the heels of the Bowling for Boobies story I just wrote up, comes news of the DVD release of Big Tits Zombie from eOne Entertainment. See what I mean?

From the Press Release:
Bloody mayhem is unleashed as flesh-eating zombies take on exotic strippers in this Japanese gore-comedy extravaganza, sure to become a cult classic, uncut in 2D and 3D!

Writer-director Takao Nakano is a veteran of bloodbath spoofs, having previously helmed Sexual Parasite: Killer Pussy and Sumo Vixens. Adapting Big Tits Zombie 3D from the popular manga “Konyu Dragon: Onsen Zombies vs. Strippers 5,” he brings just the right tone of ludicrous, campy fun to the proceedings. In this high-voltage Japanese gore-comedy, a medieval Book of the Dead is discovered in the catacombs that run under a small town strip club. When one of the desperate strippers unwittingly raises an army of the undead, the rest of girls are forced to kick some zombie ass to save the world. A campy, raucous crowd-pleaser that is definitely not for the whole family, this 3D spectacle pits brassy strippers against a horde of the undead, including one of their own when Goth stripper Maria hatches her own ambitious plans to become Queen of the Dead. Includes both 2D and 3D versions, plus two pairs of 3D glasses, and a making-of featurette.

For the past couple of days we've been speculating whether or not this whole Jacob Degloshi thing has anything to do with the storyline and family in Paranormal Activity 4. Consider the connection officially made.

When we last left off a couple of hours ago, Jacob had posted the following message on his Facebook page regarding what he had found in his daughter, Sarah's, bag while unpacking - " Found a VHS Tape in Sarah's suitcase. Pretty weird, she doesn't know where it came from." A few minutes ago a photo was posted of the tape, and you can clearly see the now infamous symbol of the triangle with a circle in it on the torn label.

Guest Blog: Dark Horse Editor-in-Chief Scott Allie Interviews Artist Dave StewartTime for another installment in our guest blog series in which Dark Horse Comics Editor-in-Chief Scott Allie interviews some of the best and most prolific contributors to the horror genre. On tap today we have the multiple Eisner Award winning colorist Dave Stewart.

Scott Allie: You color all the Mike Mignola books, as many as three a month, and Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips’ Fatale for Image. That’s a significant portion of the horror comics on the market. Do you feel an affinity for the horror genre?

Dave Stewart: There is something really fun about giving people the willies. I really enjoy good horror. There’s nothing like coloring the perfect creepy mood or a nice gory monster.

SA: Why do you think you and Mignola clicked so well? You, his wife, and I are his longest lasting relationships.

DS: Well, I think I’ve always been willing to work hard to extend his vision into the color. I trust Mike entirely, and that’s allowed me to learn quite a bit. I think it’s also a mindset of having fun while working hard. We all take what we do seriously but still feel like kids in a candy shop.

SA: What’s the biggest factor in choosing a project? Story, artist, or something else?

DS: The art is usually the first thing I think about—how can I fit color into what the artist is creating? That’s the closest relationship I’ll have on a project. I think great artists are usually hooked up with amazing writers.

SA: The most scared I’ve ever seen you was when you fell out of that boat on the Deschutes River. Has any comic ever really scared you?

DS: That was scary. Thanks for pulling me out, by the way. Yeah, Richard Corben (The Conqueror Worm), Guy Davis (B.P.R.D.), and Mignola all still have that ability to freak me out. Al Columbia, wow! Biologic Show was really scary. When I was a kid, I’d read those Jack Chick Christian comic book tracts. Holy crap, those were spooky. Now I’m scared of them for a whole different reason.

SA: Would Jack Chick’s books be more effective in full color?

DS: I’m sure they would. The covers would sometimes have a swatch of color, mostly a strong red. They had painted color in the comic size versions of those. I remember really liking the art in those.

SA: Al Columbia’s Doghead made a big impression on me. Doesn’t he tend to avoid color? Even when in full color, doesn’t it tend to be gray? Do you ever borrow from that approach?

DS: It’s been awhile since I’ve looked at that stuff, and using gray would mostly be for a specific effect.

SA: You approach each artist differently, or at least you apply very different techniques to different artists. How do you decide?

DS: I try to decide what is going to enhance the art. I need to find a balance so that the rendering and color don’t overshadow the lines. I think good coloring isn’t the first thing you notice. The lines work in unison with the color. Sometimes that is matching a rendering style to an artist’s inks. Watercolor washes for ink washes, etc. Bolder art can take a cut rendered approach. Sometimes the project demands a different approach. I colored Gabriel Bá’s art in Umbrella Academy very differently from his B.P.R.D. project. Umbrella Academy sort of asked for a more playful style than B.P.R.D., which was dark and serious.

SA: You once told me—perhaps under the influence—that you never wanted to color another sky blue again. Sometimes the Hollywood folks we have to deal with get confused when things aren’t colored the way they’d look under normal lighting. What’s wrong with coloring things the color they are?

DS: I will tell you again—stone-cold sober—no more blue sky! There is so much you can make people feel if you skew reality a bit and play with the unexpected. At the very least, it creates interest. In the context of horror, that can create a tension building the mood. Not to mention it’s a way the colorist can be an individual—an opportunity to create an identity and style.

SA: I got you to color Tim Seeley’s covers for Ex Sanguine, and Tim asked you to color the first one like a Dario Argento movie (The Phantom of the Opera, 1998) or Mario Bava (Twitch of the Death Nerve). Can you talk about how you approached it?

DS: It’s that idea of unnatural color in a tense context that those guys used so well. Why is there a hot magenta light hitting everything in this scene? It’s almost a harbinger of a supernatural presence in those films. I think that idea translates to comics.

SA: On the next cover you abandoned Argento. How come?

DS: I thought popping the vampire’s gums and eyes seemed pretty creepy. The areas of contrast were decreased, so the concept changed a bit, but the desired effect was hopefully the same.

CONTINUE TO PAGE 2 FOR MORE!

SA: You and Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) had the opportunity to talk about color, right? He’s a big fan of your work. What did you talk about?

DS: Well, Guillermo asked me to send him color codes for all the Hellboy characters, and like a bum, I didn’t do it. I love Guillermo. When are we making a Pan’s Labyrinth comic?

SA: We actually had some very excellent conversations in San Diego this year. I’ll update you shortly. Guillermo said with the first Hellboy movie that he wanted to match Mike’s light and color. Do you even think that’s really possible?

DS: Yeah, I think you could get close. Especially with all the post work they do now. It would be cool to see someone really try to do that, like they attempted in 300 or Sin City.

SA: Everyone wants to compare comics to film, calling what we do movies on paper, shit like that. Do you see a lot of crossover from movie color design to comics? Do you get more inspiration from paintings, film, or other comics?

DS: I get more inspiration from paintings and comics. You can pull stuff from movies, but you, of course, lack the movement to support a really complex or monochromatic color design. Color can be used to such great effect to move a story along in comics. It just plays a really different part in comics than most filmmakers assign it in movies.

SA: You and I used to watch "Dexter" together, and for the first two or three seasons, the color approach to the show was extremely stylized. Just when the show was at its best, Season 4, they completely abandoned the stylized color. Why is it easier for comics to get away with stylized color?

DS: I wish they had kept it up, actually; they kind of had it right. Comics is a step away from reality so stylization is easier to pull off. Sometimes I think overuse of that in TV becomes overbearing. Detracts from the story. So in that sense, a strong sense of style can steal from a story in comics, too. I worried that maybe I was doing that with Umbrella Academy at first, but I think it worked out.

Guest Blog: Dark Horse Editor-in-Chief Scott Allie Interviews Artist Dave Stewart

SA: Besides "Dexter" and O Brother, Where Art Thou?, what TV or film influences you colorwise?

DS: Can’t really think of much. Really, nature shows give me those amazing atmospheric landscapes that stick.

SA: What painters have the most influence on your comics?

DS: The influences range from rendering style to color palette. Van Gogh, Kent Williams, Jason Alexander, all of the Wyeths, Frazetta, Greg Manchess, and Leyendecker.

SA: The first time you colored Max Fiumara was on the B.P.R.D.: The Transformation of J. H. O’Donnell one-shot I wrote, and now you’re back on 1948 with him. How would you compare his work with Mignola’s?

DS: Max has these wonderfully expressive characters wandering through a world of horrible creatures. I think adding a watercolor illustrated look to his art gives it an organic hand-done look that feels right. Mike’s art has a deliberate structure that needs attention. Mike knows where he wants your eye to fall, and color helps do that. I’m such a lucky guy to be working with these artists.

SA: You did a long stint coloring The Goon. Previous to that, Eric Powell colored himself, generally pretty somber and quiet. You brought a lot more pop and color to it. Why not just copy what Powell had done?

DS: Eric really liked the palette of O Brother, Where Art Thou? He wanted the world to look rundown and the people to look unhealthy, jaundiced. I think he wanted me to do something he wasn’t able to at the time.

SA: After you left the book, Eric colored The Goon #40, and it looked much different than what came before you. Do you see your influence on his recent color?

DS: I think he’s sort of taken off in a new direction that is his own. He’s using washes and whites, I think, in a way that I wouldn’t have thought of. It looks great, and it’s something that inspires me.

SA: You’ve colored the first couple of issues of Hellboy in Hell. What Mike’s doing there is different than anything that came before. Are you coloring it differently?

Guest Blog: Dark Horse Editor-in-Chief Scott Allie Interviews Artist Dave Stewart

DS: Those full-page bleeds were a shock. Really cool. It doesn’t feel like I’m coloring things differently right now. Once we get further into Mike’s version of the afterlife—dusty rooms full of antique furniture, books, old wood—I think things might start feeling different. A very diffused, quiet place. Right now there are a lot of scene changes and action sequences so we are pulling out a lot of different palettes to separate scenes. I think Mike is also drawing more to fit in all those little spots of color variation. Adds a vibration and interest to the page.

SA: How does it do that? We can’t show any of it here, but how does it do that…?

DS: It pulls the eye in a subtle way. An Impressionistic sort of effect. It adds interest to an area of negative space.

SA: How do you use color to bring out a scary mood in a comic?

DS: Colors can be used to set you on edge through contrast. The same complementary colors you might see on a psychedelic rock poster can be used to create an unnatural effect forcing tension—not too far from what that poster might be doing but in a different context. Or the coloring can put things in the cold darkness with just those two yellow eyes floating in the dark. If a room is muted down with dusty gray affecting all of the tones, then that puts you in a place of abandon and stillness. A red color palette denotes violence and pure horror, almost an overload of fear. So much can depend on context. I could see a pink room being terrifying if it’s your prison.

SA: What mistakes do you most often see other people make in coloring moody or scary comics?

DS: I think it’s just a dullness, everything in a monochrome. That’s the thing people are borrowing from film. I think you need to pop moments out and create that emotional soundtrack, since we lack motion and sound. Throw a panel into reds, or cast an unnatural light into a scene. Use that stillness you’ve created to jar the reader emotionally with a contrast.

SA: How’s the next Fatale story end?

DS: Boom!

  • Elijah Wood Opens His Woodshed; Acquires Toad Road and Announces A Girl Walks Alone Home at Night

Elijah Wood's The Woodshed, the new horror label from partners Wood, Daniel Noah, and Josh C. Waller, has announced two new projects: the original production A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night and the completed feature Toad Road (review) from writer-director Jason Banker.

The Woodshed is partnering with Blackout Films and Random Bench on Toad Road, which will be the first film to go out under "The Woodshed Presents" endeavor, says Variety. The Woodshed partners discovered the film when programming Nightmare City, a horror film festival collaboration between Cinefamily, Cinespia, and The Woodshed that is currently unfolding around Los Angeles.

"Programming the festival, we viewed scores of new horror films, but 'Toad Road' leapt out of the pack with its devastating power. We knew we had to do whatever we could to make sure this special film is seen," said Wood.

The Woodshed will present the U.S. premiere in Los Angeles on October 23 as part of Nightmare City. It has already earned awards for director Banker and star James Davidson at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal.

Banker produced his first narrative feature, Toad Road, in collaboration with Random Bench principals Liz Levine (Camp Hollywood) and Adrian Salpeter (The French Guy).

    Synopsis
Inspired by an urban legend, Toad Road is an intimate meditation on lost youth evocative of Gus Van Sant (with a racy touch of Larry Clark) and a radical deconstruction of genre cinema, a devastating and brilliant object of contemplation and dread, and a journey down unexpected paths..

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night is an Iranian western(!) about vampires that will mark the feature debut of writer/director Ana Lily Amirpour. The film is described as a love story set in a fictitious Iranian ghost town reeking of death and loneliness, where a strange and jaded population is haunted by a lonesome vampire who preys upon the city's most depraved denizens.

Shot in widescreen black-and-white and entirely in Farsi, everything from the characters, the look, a modern soundtrack of 60's inspired Western guitar music and Iranian pop make the film a mythical mash-up of genre and culture.

"When I first heard about Ana's project; a vampire western noir, shot in black & white, in Farsi, and utilizing an entirely Iranian soundtrack, I was extremely excited. I then saw her proof of concept short and was convinced that this was a film that we'd be proud to be a part of bringing to life," said Wood.

Amirpour and Sina Sayyah, her producing partner at Say Ahh... Prods., are partnering with The Woodshed on the project, which starts production in Taft, California, in January. "We are truly thrilled to find creative partners with bold imagination and a taste for elevated genre films. There hasn't been an Iranian film like this before. It's going to be something special," added Sayyah.

Watch All Ten of the AMC Fearfest 'Living Nightmares' Mini-Docs and Get Your Shock On!

Watch All Ten of the AMC Fearfest 'Living Nightmares' Mini-Docs and Get Your Shock On!AMC's month-long Fearfest celebration just got interesting with the release of a series of mini-docs titled "Living Nightmares," which feature one major human fear per episode.

    From the Press Release:
Over ninety feature films are helping to celebrate AMC’s 2012 Fearfest, and the network has developed several mini-shockumentaries to precede and play during these many films. Ten "Living Nightmares" are being aired during AMC’s Fearfest. These short reels of 3-5 minutes in length include the violent expose “Breaking Point,” the eye-opening hydrophobia-focused “Dead Pool,” the controversial alien short “Invasion,” and the human blood-drinking documentary “Blood Work.” All of these short features focus on a specific human terror.

Several horror stars are featured in these mini-documentaries. Horror icon Bill Oberst, Jr. (Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies) re-enacts Elliot Cruise’s real-life testimony as an extraterrestrial expert in “Invasion.” Cruise’s accounts of Area 51 and the Roswell Incident will terrify viewers, and it will make them see the universe in a much different way.

Actor Circus Szalewski (Zombies vs. Strippers) is Rusty Wallingsford in “Abduction.” Rusty recounts his experience at the hands of a greyish alien species who used scalpels to tear into his friend. Dave Vescio (Lost Soul) also stars in a segment. Vescio retells Det. Pink’s many years of experience pursuing criminals who drink blood for “power.” Video evidence from “Blood Work” also suggests that there are dozens of “blood-drinkers” operating actively in the San Fernando Valley.

Finally, Irina Stemer (The Killer Within Me) is Dr. Metgzer in “Cannibals.” Dr. Metzger has promoted real-life cannibalism for years now. Droughts and a lack of food, she believes, mean that cannibalism is now a viable alternative for human consumption!

If you're an art fan, you'll want to mark your calendar because at long last The Art of Todd McFarlane: The Devil’s in the Details, Todd McFarlane’s first and only art book, is scheduled to hit shelves nationwide on Wednesday, November 21, 2012.

    From the Press Release:
A visual biography celebrating almost 30 years of artwork from one of the comic industry’s most popular and iconic artist personalities, The Art of Todd McFarlane: The Devil’s in the Details, is not just another art book. It follows McFarlane’s journey from a young comic book fan mimicking his favorite artists to his subsequent rise to comic book stardom. McFarlane himself provides hundreds of anecdotes throughout the 400-page book, walking the fans through his groundbreaking career.

“I broke into this industry when I was 23 years old. The only way to put a book like this together is to have actually spent more than two decades creating the art within it,” said McFarlane. “The passage of time allows you to build up a body of work that, as you step back, has meaning and can be an inspiration for other artists along the way. I’m happy to be able to collect my autobiography in both a written and visual format. I hope the wait has been worth it!”

Fans will receive an up-close and personal look at McFarlane’s creative take on beloved characters from both DC and Marvel Comics and learn more about his history-making move in helping to form Image Comics, where he published his brainchild, Spawn. With copious amounts of rarely seen black and white original pieces of his most famous work and numerous drawings of the comic book industry’s most popular characters, this is a book that can’t be missed. In addition, fans get an exclusive peek at McFarlane’s first forays into various media (toys, film, animation, music videos, video games), where he put his creative stamp on everything through his signature eye-catching imagery.

Available just in time for Black Friday, The Art of Todd McFarlane: The Devil’s in the Details will be released nationwide by Image Comics on Wednesday, November 21st. The over-sized hardcover book (9x12) is limited to 5,000 copies, with 700 signed and numbered editions available. Each book retails at $64.99 and $100, respectively, and would make the perfect gift for any art fan!

As an extra bonus, check out this video commentary of McFarlane talking about the book's release and revealing some of the art that fans will find within its pages:

Special Screening of I Sell the Dead Happening in New Jersey on October 26thOne of our favorite indies of the past several years, I Sell the Dead, is having a special screening/Q&A/meet & greet on Friday, October 26th, in one of the oldest theaters in New Jersey with the coolest guys in modern horror. If you're in the area, read on for the details of this can't miss event!

    From the Press Release:
Raconteur Ventures and UC PAC present an evening with Glass Eye Pix founder LARRY FESSENDEN, director GLENN McQUAID, and I SELL THE DEAD (review here). It all begins at 8:00 PM ET on Friday, October 26th, at the Union County Performing Arts Center (UC PAC), 1601 Irving Street, Rahway, NJ 07065 (three blocks from the Rahway Station and only 30 minutes from New York Penn Station via NJ Transit’s NE Corridor Line).

Tickets are just $10. For advance tix visit UCPAC.org, and for more info contact Danni Rumsey at danni@ucpac.org or call (732) 499-0441.

Trained at the crooked knee of body thief Willie Grimes, Arthur Blake is arrested for a series of ghoulish infractions and now has "five hours to kill" and confess before losing his head, courtesy of the guillotine. Thus begins McQuaid's boozy, buddy flick about two bumbling turn-of-the-century resurrectionists trying stay alive and make a living selling corpses in undead Ireland. Think Charles Dickens by way of Hammer Horror. Written, directed, designed, and edited all by McQuaid, the film features Fessenden as producer and head grave-robber Grimes and stars Hellboy Ron Perlman, ring bearer Dominic Monaghan, and everybody’s favorite Tall Man, Angus Scrimm.

Featuring an in-depth, on-stage conversation among Fessenden (The Innkeepers, Stake Land, I Sell the Dead), McQuaid (I Sell the Dead, V/H/S), and Dread Central's Paul Nomad (with possible SKYPE visits from Angus Scrimm and Ron Perlman), and a screening of their collaborative effort, the Dickensian I SELL THE DEAD, a bumptious buddy pic about two no-luck grave robbers. Find out how Larry and Glenn recreated their vivid version of turn of the century Ireland on... wait for it... Staten Island!

Dubbed a "modern day Roger Corman" by the New York Times, producer/director/actor Larry Fessenden has much more in common with foreign art house auteurs like Guillermo del Toro, a friend and longtime supporter, than he does with the current wave of American torture porn directors. As founder of Glass Eye Pix (and its "no budget" arm, Scare Flix), Fessenden is known for producing smart, inexpensive "B list films with A list themes" (what the Village Voice calls "brains before blood"), mentoring a slew of young horror hot shots that include Ti West, Jim Mickle, and Glen McQuaid, the Dublin-born director whose feature film debut is the period horror comedy I SELL THE DEAD.

The landmark Union County Performing Arts Center was built as a vaudeville venue-cum-silent film house in the early 1920s. In keeping with the film's necropolitan setting, horse-drawn hearses and authentic period charnel carts will be parked/displayed out front.

B-Sides: Phantom of the Paradise for the Hell of It

And now for a special Halloween treat. Not so much the song or the movie it’s from but the truly horrifying venues from which you will see it performed in the double dip video clips included. Why a double dip? For the hell of it!

Singer/songwriter/actor/cartoon voice actor/game show panelist/you-name-it Paul Williams has had a storied career. He’s penned Oscar-winning songs performed by Barbra Streisand, sung opposite Kermit the Frog, gave voice to The Penguin on “Batman: The Animated Series”, was a regular fixture on game shows like “Hollywood Squares”, wrote the “The Love Boat” theme, and even had his own successful singing and acting career, mostly in his heyday of the 1970’s.

Williams also wrote the Oscar-nominated score for Brian De Palma’s 1974 cult classic Phantom of the Paradise, as well as performed several of the songs from the film, including “The Hell of It”, the song I do believe we’ll be playing at my funeral some day.

Phantom of the Paradise, for those of you sadly uninitiated, is a pure Seventies rock opera remix of Phantom of the Opera and Faust with a little The Picture of Dorian Gray thrown in for good measure. Williams did double duty, both scoring the film and playing its diminutive demonic villain.

Phantom of the Paradise was a flop at the time, becoming one of those movies whose soundtrack was more popular than the movie itself. The song “The Hell of It” was a hit for Williams that led to him performing on television quite frequently.

That brings us to the two musical clips below. “The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries” was a popular show on ABC in the Seventies, and for a special Halloween episode involving Dracula, the commercial segments featured Williams performing songs like “The Hell of It” at a mock Halloween party. This clip is actually pretty awesome, especially the end where Williams puts plastic vampire fangs in his mouth, and the tiny man looks like a James Bond villain that got left in the dryer too long.

The second clip takes things to terrifying new heights. Television doesn’t get much scarier than the horrifically bad "Brady Bunch" variety show on which Williams also soiled himself by showing up to perform “The Hell of It”. I’m sure if you asked Paul Williams why he agreed to appear on such a program he’d probably reply, “For the hell of it.”

And money; can’t discount the money.
