From the Press Release
Arizona! Come enjoy Among Friends on Thursday, November 8, at Monsterland Bar & Grill. It's the directorial debut of Danielle Harris, who recently appeared in Rob Zombie's Halloween. Harris and writer/actress Alyssa Lobit will be in attendance for a Q&A following the screening! Get your tickets here, but act quickly as seating is limited!

Screening by special arrangement, Among Friends is a twisted horror tale about a dinner party gone wrong. Set against an 80's backdrop, good times take a dark turn when one in the group hijacks the evening in the name of "integrity." Through an attempt to help the others come clean about secret betrayals against one another, it's revealed who's willing to cut through the bone to expose the truth.

This film marks a collaboration of real-life friends, with most people in the cast and crew having known each other for years. Written by Alyssa Lobit and produced by Jennifer Blanc-Biehn and Athena Lobit, Among Friends is the feature directing debut of scream queen Danielle Harris. This group of women collectively has decades of experience in the film industry, and they are excited to be bringing fans and audiences everywhere a roller coaster ride of fun, intensity, and, oh yes, blood.

DISH customers, rejoice! A settlement between Cablevision Systems Corporation and DISH has come just in time to get Episode 2 of the popular AMC series "The Walking Dead" back on screens tonight! Who says the squeaky wheel doesn't get the oil?

From the Press Release
Cablevision Systems Corporation (NYSE: CVC) and AMC Networks (NASDAQ: AMCX) today announced that they have settled their litigation with DISH Network LLC (NASDAQ: DISH) related to VOOM HD Holdings LLC. The lawsuit, VOOM HD Holdings LLC v. EchoStar Satellite LLC, was filed in the Supreme Court of the State of New York, County of New York.

The settlement agreements include the following components:

DISH Network pays a cash settlement of $700 million to Cablevision and AMC Networks, $80 million of which is in consideration for the purchase of Cablevision’s multichannel video and data distribution service (MVDDS) licenses in 45 metropolitan areas in the U.S.

DISH Network enters into a long-term distribution agreement with AMC Networks to carry AMC, IFC, Sundance Channel and WE tv, and with The Madison Square Garden Company to carry Fuse on its satellite service; DISH also conveys its 20-percent membership interest in VOOM HD to Rainbow Programming Holdings LLC, such that all of the cash settlement remains with Cablevision and AMC Networks.

Promptly after payment of the cash settlement is received, the parties will file a joint stipulation to dismiss the lawsuit with prejudice. The allocation of the settlement proceeds between Cablevision and AMC Networks will be determined pursuant to the existing agreement relating to this litigation between the two companies.

Said Josh Sapan, President and CEO, AMC Networks: “We are glad to partner again with DISH Network and are delighted to bring back our popular channels and programming to their customers.”

Paranormal Not Scaring Up as Much Box Office Activity as It Used To

0

Paranormal Not Scaring Up as Much Box Office Activity as It Used ToParanormal Activity 4, to no one’s surprise, ruled the box office this weekend. What might be somewhat surprising is how much less money it opened to compared to previous installments. Are audiences finally tiring of Toby’s antics?

Box Office Mojo reports Paranormal Activity 4 opened #1 with $30.2 million. Under normal circumstances that would be great considering how cheap these movies are to produce. However, given the previous PA sequels opened to $40 and $52 million, respectively, Part Four’s $30 million is such a steep decline it can only be considered disappointing and potentially worrisome to those involved that this gravy train is beginning to derail.

Don’t cry for Paramount or Oren Peli just yet; again, the budgets on these films are so low and international box office still strong enough to guarantee many more Paranormal Activities for years to come. But they had better start expecting increasingly diminishing returns, especially with PA4 garnering mostly bad reviews and a poor word-of-mouth (a “C” Cinemascore).

Related Story: Paranormal Activity 5 a Go and More on Upcoming Latino-Themed Spin-Off

Hotel Transylvania continues to be the surprise hit of the Halloween season. Holding strong in third place with another #11.2 million, that brings its domestic total alone to $119 million. Sorry, Frankenweenie, looks like you were a week late and about a hundred million dollars short.

In what should come as no surprise given its direct competition with Paranormal Activity 4, Sinister dropped 50% to 6th place with $9 million. Have to wonder if PA4 cut more into Sinister’s box office this weekend or if Sinister siphoned off about $9 million from people weary of the PA franchise.

Nothing this weekend was probably more horrifying than the prospects of watching Tyler Perry try to act in a role he either wrote for himself or has him running around in drag. The Alex Cross reboot Tyler Perry was cast in specifically because of what a box office sensation the producers believed him to be could only muster a 5th place, $11 million opening. Maybe if they had Tyler Perry hunting serial killers while dressed like Madea as “Alex Crossdresser,” it might have been a bigger hit.

Next weekend we find out if a 3D Silent Hill sequel truly is a revelation. Until then, here’s Screen Junkies' “honest” trailer for Paranormal Activity.

Things have taken a turn for the disturbing for Jacob Degloshi and his just turned 14-year-old daughter, Sarah, and we've got the skinny right here that's home to all manner of weirdness in the form of a VHS tape found in Sarah's luggage.

When last we left the Degloshis, Jacob had posted the following message - "Found a VHS Tape in Sarah's suitcase. Pretty weird, she doesn't know where it came from."

From there he posted this:

"Can't remember the last time I even saw a VHS. Super curious. Tomorrow's mission: find VCR #Oldschool #BizzaroVHS"

Paranormal Activity - More from Jacob Degloshi and His Connection to the Franchise

Here's part one of what was on the VHS tape.

Paranormal Activity - More from Jacob Degloshi and His Connection to the Franchise

The footage is comprised of unseen stuff from Paranormal Activity 3 and takes place on November 9th, 1988 to be exact - which according to our Paranormal Activity timeline occurs after the death of Dennis in the grandmother's house. It's the grandmother talking to both Kristi and Katie, and it also features the first mention of Hunter.

From there Jacob posted the following messages:

"I thought I heard someone running down the stairs last night but when I checked Sarah was asleep. Maybe it was a dream?"

"Keep getting woken up by weird noises. Sarah seeems to be sleeping fine."

"I think Sarah pulled out all the wires from my computer and equipment."

"So, do I confront Sarah about messing with my stuff? Is it worth it?"

For you eagle-eyed viewers out there who saw Paranormal Activity 4 over the weekend, Jacob's daughter, Sarah, can be seen briefly in the film playing Kinect with Alex, the kids, and Ben.

To keep up with these events, we suggest you follow along here with our files on Jacob Degloshi.

For those who missed the past several stories and are wondering what this is all about...

While surfing around looking for more Paranormal Activity 4 stuff to bring you, we came across the Facebook page, YouTube account and Twitter profile of one Mr. Jacob Degloshi of Henderson, Nevada. Who is he, you might ask? Really good question. The truth is we're not sure.

Paranormal Activity 4 (review), directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, is in theaters everywhere October 19th. Don't forget to check out our exclusive Paranormal Activity Timeline to really relive the ghosts of Halloween past!

Hotel Arthritis Renamed Silent But Deadly; New Trailer and One Sheet Arrive

0

I think we can all agree that there haven't been enough nursing home-based horror-comedies lately. The sub-genre is basically barren aside from Bubba Ho-Tep; however, the upcoming Silent But Deadly is ready to drop some more horrific retirement palace humor on you.

Originally titled Hotel Arthritis (which is a pretty hilarious handle in its own right), Silent But Deadly has grabbed this new name, redesigned its movie poster (see below), and even shot a new trailer (see below as well…probably should have told you it was down there when we told you about the poster…sorry).

The cast of this film is absolutely wonderful, including Dawn Wells (MaryAnn from "Gilligan's Island"), John Tartaglia (Broadway's Avenue Q), Lee Meriwether (Catwoman from the 60's "Batman" series), David Proval (Richie Aprile on "The Sopranos"…how's your chest, Richie?), Martin Kove (played the sensei of the Cobra Kai in the original Karate Kid)…are you kidding me? And the list goes on! Bruce Vilanch, Rip Taylor, Shawn Harrison, Robert Towers, Camille Saviloa, and Jacqui Holland. The film was directed by Jason Lockhart, who co-wrote the film with Jacqui Holland.

For more on this upcoming horror comedy, visit the official Silent But Deadly website, "like" Silent But Deadly on Facebook and follow Silent But Deadly on Twitter (@SBDfilm).

Synopsis
Somebody is killing old people. The weapon of choice: a secret. They are being offed by a masked killer who stalks the halls of the small retirement community in which they live. The story opens with a terrifying murder, creating space on the waiting list for Rose to move in. Upon Rose’s arrival, she is taken on a tour of the grounds by the quirky, asexual manager named Dale.

The odd and brightly colored characters continue to pop up as Fanny, her Jewish gossiping neighbor, introduces Rose to “the gang.” The routine of daily life is all stirred up at the moment. People are disappearing, chaos is erupting, there’s talk of a ghost, and to top things off, there’s an STD outbreak! As terror rises throughout the building, the fear of who’s next and who the killer may be, continues to grow. We find ourselves in the game of whodunit? Is it Desperella, the ground’s custodial manager? Is it Kitty the sexy candy striper? Or Zeke, her punk rock boyfriend? Maybe it’s one of the elder folks suffering from dementia or seeking some sort of revenge… Full of laughs and full of scares - you’ll be on the edge of your seat from the moment you enter the world of Lake View Retirement Home: The place where people come to live…until they die!

Recap: The Walking Dead Season 3 Episode 2: Sick

0
0

You just don’t screw with Rick Grimes. We haven’t even met The Governor yet, but already Rick has stepped up as the most ruthless SOB on the show. It’s pretty clear that Shane has rubbed off on the man in more ways than one, but that’s the thing about the apocalypse: It changes people.

That’s what the very best zombie fiction – ever since Ben bitch-slapped Harry Cooper in Night of the Living Dead – has been communicating, and this season’s tagline sums it up nicely: “Fight the Dead. Fear the Living.”

Things weren’t all doom and gloom this week, which is rare for both the show and comic. The biggest surprise was that Herschel got a stay of execution. Once again, the writers have done a great job at keeping fans of the books off balance (the old man never lost a limb in the comic), and when everything goes to shit at the end of this arc, it’s anyone’s guess who will be left standing.

Once again, we don’t get to the Andrea/Michonne storyline, which means the showrunners are in no rush to get to Woodbury. That’s fine. The prison material has given "The Walking Dead" a much needed burst of adrenalin. KNB must have an army at their disposal because this season has given us several films worth of bloody carnage – and we’re only on the second episode.

My biggest concern was the show would cave in too hard to the naysayers and lose all the great character dynamics to the action. Thankfully, that isn’t the case at all. This episode especially did a much better job of balancing the cast and making you care about their fates. Lori, now penitent over her stone-cold bitch phase, steps up as a much more sympathetic character trying to mend things with her estranged family (good luck with that psycho hubby of yours, lady). Carl (“Stay in the house!”) has matured into a capable gun-slinger who’s eager to be treated as one of the adults. Hell, even T-Dog becomes a big player and does more in one episode than the first two seasons combined.

All in all, "The Walking Dead" continued its winning streak this week, and things are only going to get more intense from here on out. Along with the new seasons of "Supernatural" and "Dexter," this show has rebounded with a vengeance. It’s a great time to be a horror fan...

…unless of course you’re a commie bastard who hates everything good in this world.

Synopsis:
The 16-episode Season 3 of "The Walking Dead" will air in two parts with the first eight hours kicking off October 14th and returning in February, 2013 with the final eight episodes. In the highly anticipated new season, Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and his fellow survivors continue to seek refuge in a desolate and post-apocalyptic world and soon discover that there are greater forces to fear than just the walking dead. The struggle to survive has never been so perilous. Season 3 also introduces new characters, including the Governor (David Morrissey) and fan favorite Michonne (Danai Gurira), along with her zombie pets.

Exclusive: Traci Lords Talks Excision, Reuniting with John Waters and More

0
0

Last week, first-time feature filmmaker Richard Bates Jr.'s wickedly twisted high school horror flick Excision (think Heathers meets Santa Sangre hit Blu-ray and DVD shelves everywhere courtesy of Anchor Bay Films.

Based on the award-winning short film by the same name, Excision (Blu-ray and DVD review) follows a delusional and social awkward teenager named Pauline (AnnaLynne McCord); shunned by her peers and her own mother who she desperately wants to please, Pauline's obsession with surgery and blood grows as her younger sister's Cystic Fibrosis worsens and soon, Pauline's quest to save her sister spirals out of control in unimaginable ways.

Excision also stars Traci Lords, Ariel Winter, Roger Bart, John Waters, Ray Wise, Malcolm McDowell and Marlee Matlin.

Recently, Dread Central had the opportunity to speak with cult icon Lords about her role in Excision as well as how it was reuniting with director John Waters on this project and her thoughts on collaborating with her co-stars as well as what the future holds for her.

Exclusive: Traci Lords Talks Excision, Reuniting with John Waters and More

Check out the highlights from our exclusive interview with Lords below and look for Excision on DVD and Blu-ray everywhere now!

Dread Central: So how did you get involved with Excision? I'm sure this project had to be highly appealing to you considering how strong the material was that you were given to work with here.

Traci Lords: Oh, definitely. The script and Ricky's short came to me through my agent and I really thought it was interesting and provocative. Plus when I read the script, I realized he wasn't asking me to play the role I usually play. Usually, I play the "Pauline's" of the world but in Excision, Ricky wanted to cast me against type and have me become this tightly wound mother who kind of loves one of her children more than the other, which of course is something a parent never, ever wants to admit.

So there was a lot for me to do in Excision- Phyllis has a real journey from start to finish- and that excited me; I thought the relationships between these characters were just extraordinary. You know, it would have been very easy to make Phyllis into this one-dimensional antagonist to Pauline but that's not what Ricky did; he chose to show her flaws and how a lot of those flaws come from her relationship with her own mother that has jilted her love towards her oldest daughter.

Phyllis is someone who was the Prom Queen, who always had everything she wanted in life and had this picturesque idea of how her life would turn out but that's not how life happened. Instead, she has a failing marriage, a teenage daughter who might be a psychopath and a beautiful, young daughter who is going to die any day because of a deadly disease. There's an interesting dynamic at play in Excision as you watch Phyllis take this truly broken life and try to put Band-Aids all over everything because she thinks that will keep everything 'perfect.' Phyllis was truly an incredibly fascinating character to me, especially considering I'm a mother.

I only have on child so thankfully, I can't relate to a lot of Phyllis' emotions about loving one child more than the other but as an actress, I can understand the place those emotions are coming from and that's what I used while I was on set.

Dread Central: I'll admit that I probably wasn't the nicest teenager to have had to contend with so a lot of Excision really resonated with me, especially the scene with you and AnnaLynne on the couch where you're trying to reach out to Pauline ---

Traci Lords: Oh, I love that moment! It's one of my favorite. It's so subtle and powerful and AnnaLynne is simply a remarkable young actress. She's just so vibrant- she's fearless and I think that's she one of the main reasons- her and Ricky, really- why this movie is so great.

Dread Central: How did it feel like reuniting with John (Waters) on Excision, especially considering he's in front of the camera this time?

Traci Lords: Oh, John and I are very dear friends; Ricky was a huge fan of his so I asked him to come in and play something in the movie. You know, there's a lot of that 'John Waters humor' in Excision and I thought that this would something right up his alley. When he read the script, he really loved it and agreed to it. I was so glad it worked out for everyone and having John play a priest of all things- priceless!

Dread Central: I really loved the relationship between Phyllis and Bob played by Roger Bart; there was something sweet even about them. You could see they still loved each other but there was this distance between them. How was it collaborating with Roger?

Traci Lords: You know, Ricky had a lot of problems casting that role; nobody wanted to play that role because it is a bit emasculating. I think a lot of people really missed what Bob was really all about- that ultimately he loves his wife no matter what. Even when she freaks out and isn't the nicest person to be around, he loves her so much that he's just ready to be there to support when she falls. It's love for Bob, it's not about him being a doormat for Phyllis.

And I thought Roger was the perfect person; Ricky really needed someone who could give this role a bit of a 'twist' so there was some intelligence to the character. Bob wasn't just this spineless husband either. Roger has this brilliant sense of comedic delivery but also this gentleness that made every scene I worked along with him a pleasure.

There was this really great scene between us that was cut; it may be on the DVD but I'm not sure. But anyway, Roger is there and I'm just unloading on him and he's just sitting there, taking it all and silently brushing my hair. He never speaks but it's all about his actions in that moment, like he understands the pain I'm in. It's not about all the trivial things I'm complaining about- it's more about my oldest kid who may be a lunatic and my other daughter who's going to die any day. That's where Phyllis' pain is and Bob accepts her pain because he understands it. Roger was really wonderful; in that scene and all together, just wonderful.

Dread Central: Now that Excision is out, what's coming up next for you then? What kind of roles are you keeping an eye out for?

Traci Lords: Well, I never want to repeat myself; I've been very lucky throughout my career to be a part of a lot of different genres- on both TV and in movies- so what I'm mostly looking for is something where I won't be repeating myself. I just want to keep pushing myself because it is a bit harder being a 40-year-old actress in Hollywood. The business is a lot harder when you hit 40 so I just want to keep digging for those prime roles, like I found in Excision, and just continue trying new things too.

My new album M2F2 just came out too which is really exciting because I'm doing a lot of promotional work for that right now. I’m also adapting my book, "Underneath it All" into a screenplay and I’m doing more writing and directing too while I keep looking for more great projects.

Synopsis:
Based on a short film of the same name, Excision follows a disturbed and delusional high school student, Pauline (AnnaLynne McCord), who, with aspirations of a career in medicine, goes to extremes to earn the approval of her controlling mother (Traci Lords). While dealing with being an outcast teenager and obsession over curing her sister’s cystic fibrosis, Pauline becomes continually deranged as her fascination with surgery and the human flesh grows into something abysmal and demonic.

Bonus feature on the Excision Blu-ray™ and DVD: audio commentary with writer/director Richard Bates, Jr., and AnnaLynne McCord.

Official Artwork and Synopsis: Mockingbird Lane

Airing on Friday, October 26, is NBC's Halloween special, "Mockingbird Lane," and we have an extended synopsis along with the key art for you to feast your peepers on. So what do you cats think? Gonna watch it for the giggles or avoid it like a vamp does garlic?

The "Mockingbird Lane" pilot was written by Bryan Fuller and directed by Bryan Singer. It is a reinvention of the 1960s sitcom about "The Munsters," a family of “monsters” — vampires, werewolves, and Frankenstein — and their “plain” cousin that will feature striking visuals in the vein of Fuller’s ABC dramedy "Pushing Daisies."

Portia DeRossi and Jerry O’Connell star as Lily and Herman Munster, Eddie Izzard as Grandpa, Mason Cook as Eddie, and Charity Wakefield as Marilyn.

Synopsis
Sweet little Eddie Munster (Mason Cook) is a normal kid about to enter the horrors of puberty. Truth is, he's about to discover that for him becoming a teenager means growing hair in truly unexpected places -- as in all over his body -- every time the moon is full! Eddie's got it pretty good though. His loving, supportive, run-of-the-mill family includes his mom Lily (Portia de Rossi), the daughter of Dracula; his dad Herman (Jerry O'Connell), who brings new meaning to "Frankenstein"; and Grandpa (Eddie Izzard), who would give Dracula a run for his money if he weren't actually Dracula! Of course then there's creepy cousin Marilyn (Charity Wakefield), who's really the odd one because she's so completely normal.

Buying a house these days is a nightmare, so Herman and Lily are shocked that no one scooped up the rambling Victorian mansion at 1313 Mockingbird Lane that was the site of a series of grisly hobo murders. Settling into their new place, they're quickly onto the mission at hand: to gently ease Eddie into the reality of his werewolf adolescence. But it's not always so easy to accept that your child is a little "different" from the rest of the kids. Meanwhile, Herman, who works as a funeral director, is suffering from a heart condition. Since he's made up mostly of spare parts, he knew his makeshift heart would eventually give out. No worries though, because Grandpa, who is pretty good at procuring body parts, is on the case. All Herman cares about is finding a new heart with the same capacity to love Lily as much as he has for so many decades.
