Fright Night Sequel Gearing up for Production in Romania?

Fright Night Sequel Gearing up for Production in Romania? Here's some unexpected news that we'll file under rumor for now, but sources surrounding the Fright Night franchise have left us confident enough to report to you that a sequel is looming that may take the series in a different direction.

Apparently the sequel to the remake of Fright Night is gearing up for production in Romania. Here's what we've been able to dig up... DreamWorks put the rights to the franchise up for sale after their remake underperformed. Another smaller studio snatched them up and their plan is to do more Fright Nights and potentially spin it off into its own 'brand' a la Tales from the Crypt. It's unclear at the moment whether this next film will be a stand alone flick with more stand alone sequels happening afterward or if it's going the straight anthology film route.

We're working to get official confirmation, and once it comes we'll either throw some meat on this skeleton of a story or debunk it completely. Stay tuned.

Synopsis
Texas Chainsaw 3D continues the legendary story of the homicidal Sawyer family, picking up where Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror classic left off in Newt, Texas, where for decades people went missing without a trace. The townspeople long suspected the Sawyer family, owners of a local barbeque pit, were somehow responsible. Their suspicions were finally confirmed one hot summer day when a young woman escaped the Sawyer house following the brutal murders of her four friends. Word around the small town quickly spread, and a vigilante mob of enraged locals surrounded the Sawyer stronghold, burning it to the ground and killing every last member of the family – or so they thought.

Decades later and hundreds of miles away from the original massacre, a young woman named Heather learns that she has inherited a Texas estate from a grandmother she never knew she had. After embarking on a road trip with friends to uncover her roots, she finds she is the sole owner of a lavish, isolated Victorian mansion. But her newfound wealth comes at a price as she stumbles upon a horror that awaits her in the mansion’s dank cellars…

Haunt Report: Dread Central Visits Haunted Hollywood Sports

Haunt Report: Dread Central Visits Haunted Hollywood SportsWe all long to experience a realistic zombie apocalypse simulation, and while I already fled the undead at Run for Your Lives and braved Halloween Horror Nights’ "The Walking Dead" maze, I did so unarmed. That wasn’t the case when Dread Central hit Haunted Hollywood Sports.

Located at 9030 Somerset Blvd. in Bellflower, CA, Haunted Hollywood Sports is the seasonal (and spooky) recreation of Hollywood Sports, a park dedicated year round to the pursuit of Airsoft and Paintball. The former is basically paintball without the messy paint and cumbersome guns. Resembling the military firearms they mimic with exacting detail, Airsoft weaponry eschews paint in favor of 6mm plastic BBs, which can be fired rapidly and with high velocity. The result is a training weapon platform that allows players to engage in fairly realistic combat scenarios (as long as proper face gear is worn: those BBs will easily knock teeth out).

Having just let my geek flag fly with that intro, I’ll fess up and say, ‘Yeah, I personally own an Airsoft M4 and all of the tactical gear required,’ and, ‘Yeah, I do on occasion spend a Saturday here or there engaging in C. Q. B. (that’s close quarter combat for you noobs) at the HSP Combat Center at Hollywood Sports.’ So imagine my excitement when I was made aware that two of my passions, military combat simulations and horror flicks, would be combined.

Haunted Hollywood Sports offers up the requisite scare mazes (‘The Abduction,’ ‘All-American Armageddon,’ ‘Cannibal Caverns’ and ‘City of Angels’), having repositioned a portion of their already well-dressed playing fields, as well as scare-zones (‘Carnival of the Damned’ and ‘Grid-X’), for which they have hired attractive and talented performers to roam (guys, there will be eye candy). They have also secured the talents of top-notch makeup artists and costumers. The scare actors we encountered were top of the line.

Having soaked this in, it was time for some combat.

First up, the Zombie Killhouse. We were outfitted with IR M4’s (they fire an infra red beam), and a group of fifteen or so of us were led by our squad leader into the park’s simulated Middle Eastern town. Our objectives were to locate and rescue three children and to secure a package (a cure to the plague which had turned the town’s inhabitants into the undead). Our visibility cut by darkness and fog, we moved house to house and room to room, firing on myriad attacking zombies who crept, lurched and shambled (and whose IR vests glowed red when shot, signifying a ‘kill’).

It wasn’t long before we came across our pre-pubescent trio, who were huddled in a building and whose cries were all too realistic. Their wailing added authenticity to the simulation, and we provided security for the three kids (one of them clutched a teddy bear as she sobbed) and escorted them to the ‘safe zone.’ On the way we located the package within another darkened structure, and following a brief but fierce skirmish with a dozen of so zombies, we completed the mission.

This was the high-point of the evening, and for those who ever wonder how they’d fare in a "The Walking Dead" type-scenario, it’s about as close as you are going to get.

Haunt Report: Dread Central Visits Haunted Hollywood Sports

Next up was the Voodoo Killhouse, and as the weaponry dispensed here were actual Airsoft pump shotguns, protective goggles were also issued. After a brief crash-course on Airsoft safety and our mission objective (‘Find the Voodoo Doll to end the curse’) delivered by a scare actor with an altogether believable Cajun accent, we were ushered into the Killhouse. Again, zombies shambled among the buildings and waited in darkened recesses. Some of our group don’t make it (though if ‘eaten’ you are able to continue along, albeit with the knowledge that you were killed in action). Like the Zombie Killhouse, this, too, was extremely entertaining.

Haunt Report: Dread Central Visits Haunted Hollywood Sports

Before heading out, with hit the park’s twenty-one and over bar and lounge ‘Club Crimson’ to grab a drink and were impressed by the structure's dressing. Pulling favors, Hollywood Sports has acquired the Gothic columns and other set decor from director Jan De Bont’s 1999 film The Haunting and coupled with our edgy yet amiable (and altogether fetching) bartendress, stiff drinks and electro-funk (spun by two DJs), it was yet another good time.

Chatting with Hollywood Sports Park general manager Jon Asperin, he was enthusiastic regarding the future of the haunt. It’s their first year, which is surprising, given just how good of a job they’ve already done, and I won’t lie... I’m excited about their growth potential. True, some of their mazes were hard to navigate, and an influx of further scare actors wouldn’t hurt. Also, for hardcore Airsoft enthusiasts a more visceral, autonomous and extensive experience may be desired (a C02 or gas pistol night in a Killhouse might do they trick). This being said, Haunted Hollywood Sports still succeeds in delivering an entirely unique experience which should appear to seasonal fans. It certainly seemed to do so for the throngs that waited enthusiastically for their chance to unload on the undead.

Haunted Hollywood Sports runs through October 31. For more info, visit the official Haunted Hollywood Sports website.

Kit Harington Talks Silent Hill: Revelation, His Horror Future, and Game of Thrones

Our cast and crew interviews for Silent Hill: Revelation conclude with Kit Harington, star of "Game of Thrones," who plays "Vincent," and the first thing we discussed was what he could - and couldn't - tell us about the character.

With Sean Bean’s character in peril, providing all the motivation his daughter, Heather (Adelaide Clemens (interview)), needs to head to Silent Hill, one might wonder if Harington's secondary male lead character was there to provide support or maybe act as a love interest. (When the ladies realize Jon Snow from "Game of Thrones" is providing that “support”, they may just drag their friends out to make Silent Hill: Revelation #1 at the box office!)

Kit Harington Talks Silent Hill: Revelation, His Horror Future, and Game of Thrones

When we asked if Kit could shed some light on his character, he answered with a sly smile. "Yeah, not really," he said. "My character is quite possibly the most complex in this story, and there’s certain surprises that happen within… and he differs from the character in the game sooooo I can’t really say too much."

The character comes from the third installment of the video game, if that helps any hardcore game heads out there to flesh this mystery out. For me it’s like saying he is based on a boy pony in the "Friendship Is Magic" cartoon. Anyway, Kit went on to say he loves horror films and always wanted to be in one so this role was a no-brainer. On top of that basic drive, the character has things he has to hide, and that level of complexity was compelling for Kit as well as the director spearheading the project. Kit is a fan! As for his potential role in future horror films, he would love to be dispatched in some gruesome way… so apparently his character means nothing. He just wants to be taken out in a spectacularly hideous way. For that we salute him.

As for his taste in horror, Kit leans toward the psychological content. "My favorite horror would probably be The Shining and, weirdly - a lot of people disagree with me on this - The Ring, the American version. Love that film. Everyone says, 'NO, the Japanese version,' but I like the American version better. And Wicker Man! This film shares weird things with that film. It’s all about a strange town where people are a bit off and do horrible things, horrible immoral things. I like that concept of walking into a town where everyone is backwards and twisted. I love how the first one is scary not so much for the jump factor, but it’s more that it really messes with your head… how the whole thing is kind of bizarre and quite surreal. I like ones that have a sort of overall painted on feeling of fear on them."

Again the subject of the games arises, and once more we have an admitted rubbish gamer. In this instance Kit didn’t like playing the games particularly because they scared him. At least he’s honest! He returned to the games to do research for this film and didn’t do any better than he fared as a boy because that fear was still there, looking to bite him in the dark.

"That walking around and figuring things out and wondering if you’ve done the wrong things… and there not being an absolute, definite direction you have to go in… and people creeping up on you and you don’t know who to trust. That sort of thing really disturbs me, especially when you’re playing it because when you’re watching it, you detach. When you are the character, when you’re playing it on the computer, for some reason it’s far more scary. So I’m not very good at playing Silent Hill!"

Our conversation took a detour into "Game of Thrones" territory as the bunch of us interviewing couldn’t help inquiring. Ever the toy geek, I provided the gateway to this line of questioning when I asked if Kit had seen his Jon Snow statue from Dark Horse. He asked how big it turned out, and I showed with my hands an approximation. "I’ve got to get me one of those!" he said. That’s got to be a high point in anyone’s career. I give the middle finger to any celeb who makes that creation process tedious for the company blessing them with little plastic or resin versions of themselves… but I digress.

After some brief talk about the promised impactful Season 3 you’ll get after they’ve tested your patience with Season 2, I asked which world, in hindsight, is scarier: Silent Hill or "Game of Thrones"? "They are scary in different ways," he replied. "I know that’s a cop-out, but they are. In my bit in the story in 'Thrones,' the horror element… weirdly, I’m in the most horror element in 'Thrones' and also in this horror movie so they’re not so worlds apart that you may think they are. These are two very different projects and different characters so they never kind of blended, though it was weird being on the set with Sean Bean in a completely different environment and a completely different relationship. It was like, 'We’ve been here before, man! And I dunno where. Weren’t you in that evil gear last time?' He’s a great guy. It’s strange, but as an actor you have to forget something and move on and do the best with the next one."

Open Road releasef Silent Hill: Revelation (review) on October 26th. Sean Bean, Deborah Kara Unger, and Radha Mitchell return from the original film. In the sequel, directed by Michael J. Bassett (interview), Heather Mason (Clemens) and her father (Bean) have been on the run from mysterious and dangerous forces. She discovers she isn't who she thinks she is, leading her deeper into a demonic world.

Synopsis
For years, Heather Mason and her father have been on the run, always one step ahead of dangerous forces that she doesn’t fully understand. Now on the eve of her 18th birthday, plagued by terrifying nightmares and the disappearance of her father, Heather discovers she's not who she thinks she is. The revelation leads her deeper into a demonic world that threatens to trap her in Silent Hill forever.

Exclusive: Stan Winston's Famous Monsters Day Four: Go on the Hunt with the Predator!

"I ain't got time to bleed." While many were showing up to watch Arnold Schwarzenegger battle against an alien warrior in John McTiernan's 1987 action/sci-fi flick Predator, admittedly this writer begged her mom to take her to see it at the drive-in that summer because...

...of none other than Jesse "The Body" Ventura and ever since, very few cinematic creatures have fascinated me the way that the Predator did.

There was something about its technological advances as well as its stature that loomed large over such action movie heavyweights like Schwarzenegger, Ventura or even Carl Weathers that made the Predator a serious badass villain that made me an instantaneous fan. Hell, I was even willing to even sit through AVPR on Christmas night which says a lot right there.

Exclusive: Stan Winston's Famous Monsters Day Four: Go on the Hunt with the Predator!

So when Dread Central recently partnered with the Stan Winston School of Character Arts to present Seven Days of Stan Winston's Famous Monsters for Halloween, we just knew we had to include Winston's stunning special make-up effects work from Predator in our celebration.
What's really interesting is that the Predator itself went through some major transformations throughout production- initially, the design was different than the final version we saw in the film and the creature was originally to be played by none other than Jean-Claude Van Damme (man, would I love to get my hands on those stills!).

Thankfully that plan was scrapped due to Van Damme's diminutive stature compared to the flick's much larger co-stars so when Kevin Peter Hall was brought on to replace Van Damme, Stan Winston also redesigned the look of the Predator, taking away the 'dog-like' look of the original alien, creating something more otherworldly that featured its now trademark mandibles.

And while special effects master Winston may have been garnering most of the attention that year for the ground-breaking visual effects from Predator (Winston was nominated for an Oscar), there's no denying the influence of his work on the now iconic character that has become a pop cultural phenomenon in its own right.

Check out our exclusive gallery of behind-the-scenes stills from the set of Predator as well as inside Winston's shop and look for more of Stan Winston's Famous Monsters through Halloween!

Exclusive: Oscar Winning Director Barry Levinson Talks Horror on a Small Scale in The Bay

Exclusive: Oscar Winning Director Barry Levinson Talks Horror on a Small Scale in The BayWith The Bay (review) hitting theatres and VOD this weekend we sat down with director Barry Levinson to talk horror, found footage, Isopods, and more!

"The Bay kind of evolved," says Levinson regarding the genesis of the project. "I was originally asked to do a documentary about the Chesapeake Bay because it is 40% dead. I started collecting the information and the facts, and they were quite frightening. Once everything was in front of me, I didn't think the subject would be best served by doing a documentary. So I thought to myself, 'What if we just told this story in a traditional narrative way?' So from there we brought all of the facts into it, and it just kept getting scarier. This led to the form that the film eventually took. We ended up shooting the film in eighteen days for two million dollars, and that's how it all happened."

Levinson continues, "We were running around with our cameras and just shooting like crazy, and to be honest with you, we never felt pressed for time as we seemed to get everything accomplished that we needed to within that set time frame."

The Bay has a very organic feel to it that lends to the film's credibility. Levinson went on to talk about the smaller scale film process. "We looked at the upscale digital cameras that you could find on the market. The really high-end stuff, but when we degraded it, it still didn't look real enough to me. It looked too good to be the fake version of real footage we were trying to capture. More so, those upscale cameras are much bigger and heavier and so you have to hold them differently as people do with consumer cameras. In the end we decided that the best route for us to take would be using the consumer grade cameras so it would look more real. We examined over sixty to seventy cameras to see what their capabilities were, and from there we whittled the number down to around twenty that were used for production. You would have to use these cameras the same way a consumer would, and that more organic effect ended up lending a lot more credibility to the look that we were hoping to capture. Once that was settled, we had to go and find actors who were absolutely unknown and anonymous to preserve that illusion." Adding, "As a director it's always good to keep pushing the boundaries in terms of what you've done and where you may go. It's all part of the learning curve. It's exciting when you don't have it all figured out. I love doing that. I love the challenge of it all."

A horror film is only as good as its menace, and the ones found in The Bay will have your skin crawling for sure. "Screenwriter Mike Wallach came across a few articles about Isopods (check out The Tongue-Eating Isopod website for more) as we were starting to work on the film. After looking at the stuff he was showing me, I was blown away. I was like, 'Okay, this is the villain, this parasitic thing that evolves.' Another thing we loved about the Isopod is that no one has really heard of them, but they are really out there. They're in the Pacific, and now they've spread into the Atlantic; in our case we took the liberty of having them move into brackish water, which is what the big bay is. These are frightening creatures, and as soon as we hit on that, we knew this would be a great thing to add to our story. They're as frightening as could be."

From here Levinson reflected on the found footage phenomenon and its extreme popularity. "This was the first time in history that this generation had recorded a lot of its most private moments. So therefore, if there was no media in place, how would we know what happened to a town like this? Now, with all the technology, all the cellphones, we have an idea of how people would behave when faced with imminent danger. All this footage out there right now in my opinion will become archeological. Maybe even anthropological. Look at Pompeii. All we know is that the volcano erupted. We didn't know what people were doing or what was going on earlier in the day. Now there are video records of some truly intimate moments. That's what occurred to me when I was thinking of how to do a found footage film. That was my thought process."

Starring Will Rogers, Stephen Kunken, Kether Donohue, Frank Deal, and Kristen Connolly, look for The Bay in theaters and available on VOD November 2, 2012, from Roadside Attractions.

Synopsis
Two million fish washed ashore. One thousand blackbirds dropped from the sky. On July 4, 2009, a deadly menace swept through the quaint seaside town of Claridge, Maryland; but the harrowing story of what happened that Independence Day has never been told - until now. From Oscar-winning director Barry Levinson and the producers of Paranormal Activity and Insidious comes this nerve-shredding tale of a small town plunged into absolute terror. The authorities believed they had buried the truth about the tragedy that claimed over 700 human lives. Now, three years later, a reporter has emerged with footage revealing the cover-up and an unimaginable killer: a mysterious parasitic outbreak. Told from the perspective of those who were there and saw what happened, The Bay unfolds over 24 hours though people's iPhones, Androids, 911 calls, web cams, and whatever else could be used to document the nightmare in Claridge.

Let me be clear.... we here at Dread Central are of the belief that when it comes to which political party you support, if it makes sense to you, then great! More power to you. You don't need a horror website or anyone else for that matter imposing their beliefs on you. That being said...

If it's horror related and damned funny, too, we'll bring it to you to judge for yourself. Case in point: this latest video from Joss Whedon, who has finally come out in support of Presidential candidate Mitt Romney. His reasons for doing so are clear, concise, and in our opinion just as funny as Meat Loaf channeling the spirit of portly passed comedian Chris Farley during his recent stirring rendition of "America the Beautiful."

So here you go, prospective voters... get out there and do your thing, whatever said thing may be. Make your voice heard and do your part to assure that this country is being steered in the right direction. It's just too bad said direction is more elusive than Sasquatch.

A sequel to one of our favorite zombie flicks of the last ten years, The Dead (Blu-ray and DVD review here), is well on its way; and we have the first info, still, and teaser for you right here! Shamble on!

From the Press Release
The Ford Brothers, the team behind the acclaimed "modern classic" zombie thriller The Dead, have revealed that the much awaited sequel, The Dead II, will be shot in India. Chatting to the audience at the FrightFest Halloween All-nighter, Howard Ford unveiled a teaser trailer shot on a recent location recce and said that the film, for which the screenplay is now completed, is anticipated to start production in February/March 2013.

Howard went on to say: “Jon and I have been receiving so much enthusiasm and demand for a sequel we owe it to the fans of The Dead 1 to deliver something that goes way beyond what we could achieve first time around, and the starting point was to find the most stunning and varied landscapes where we have not seen the dead walk before”.

His brother, Jon, added: “Part II has to be another journey movie with varied terrains but challenges for our main characters that contain all of the gritty detail that people liked from the first film. There will be a lot more action and more scares along the way, but we don't want to lose any of the little details that kept it feeling real”.

The Walking Dead: Q&A with David Morrissey (The Governor)

After his comment at the end of last night's episode, it sounds like we may never learn the real name of "The Walking Dead"'s Governor, but this Q&A with David Morrissey should shed some light on a few other things involving the character.

British actor Morrissey spoke with AMCtv's Eli Rosenberg about some unexpected overlaps with his character's tastes, explains how the role finally earned him some respect at home, and more.

Q: This is your first season on the show. Was there a learning curve to get up-to-speed with "The Walking Dead"?

A: I was very nervous about joining the show on the first day, but once I got there, it's been a joy ever since. There's an element about needing to know about the conditions: the heat and the humidity and the snakes and bugs and ticks. You have to have a little bit of an Outward Bound course before you start filming. Those things are different for me because normally it's like, "How do I get to the canteen?" But I do think those crazy brutal conditions add to the show -- because the show's all about that. It isn't a comfortable place to be, and that's important.

Q: How much of the Governor's backstory have you sketched out?

A: I feel that the Governor is someone who before the event was a pretty middle-management type guy. He didn't have the status before, but now he's walking that tightrope of leadership about what he needs to do as a leader. It's all relatively new to him.

Q: As a British actor, is there anything you do to prevent lapsing back into your accent on-set?

A: I stay in accent as much as I can. We have a crew of locals, and whenever I go get my coffee or groceries, I can hear the accent. So the accent is around me all the time, and that's been an advantage.

Q: Do you ever take the Governor home with you?

MA: The Governor would be a pretty tough character to take home -- I don't think my wife would like that. He's a pretty intense man to play, and there is a darkness to him, which can get inside your head sometimes. Thankfully, I have quite a long drive from the location back here to Atlanta so I often put on a bit of rock music on the way home -- the Rolling Stones or whatever -- and that tends to get the character out of my head.

The Walking Dead: Q&A with David Morrissey (The Governor)

Q: Do you ever have to do the reverse: put on some music to get into your character's head?

A: On every job that I do, I have some sort of playlist that I use. And that can get me into character in a good way and get me into that mood. Of course different scenes require different moods and different music as well. At the moment I have a band called 16 Horsepower which I really like. Sometimes I throw a bit of jazz in there -- John Coltrane and Miles Davis -- something like that that can get me into certain moods. The Stones are always good to get me going. I can get into some Chet Baker, Art Pepper type stuff as well.

Q: Do you think you share musical tastes with the Governor?

A: I think the Governor's got quite an odd taste, but it probably does cross over into mine. I do use classical music quite a bit in my iPod. Sometimes words and lyrics can get into your head, and what you want is just the music so I use jazz and classical music for that.

Q: Back home in the UK -- do your friends and family have a different reaction to the show than fans here?

A: For me it's very interesting because I have a 17-year-old son. I've been working for a long time as an actor, and he's usually quite blasé about whatever I'm doing. If I tell him I'm playing the lead in a Shakespeare play, he's like, "Oh, whatever." Or if I tell him I just got an award for a TV show in the UK, he's like, "Oh, yeah, well. " But when I told him I was doing "The Walking Dead," he was like, "No, you're joking, dad. That's fantastic!" It's made me cool in my son's eyes.

AFM 2012: Raven Banner Entertainment Swoops in for Eternal Rights

It's been a long time since last we spoke about the vampire film The Eternal. Around two years in fact. But hey, even the most toothy of buns need some extra time in the oven on occasion. Read on for the latest.

From the Press Release
The worldwide rights to the upcoming horror/action film The Eternal were recently acquired by Canadian genre outfit Raven Banner Entertainment. The film, co-written and to be directed by Justin McConnell (The Collapsed), currently stars genre icon Michael Biehn (Aliens, The Terminator, The Divide) and well-respected Canadian actor Adam Kenneth Wilson (24 Hour Rental, Manson, Ending the Eternal). Production is slated for spring 2013. Additional cast will be announced in the coming weeks.

The film, written by McConnell, Wilson, and the late Kevin Hutchinson, will be overseen by prolific Canadian producer Avi Federgreen (High Life, One Week, Dead By Dawn 3D, Score: A Hockey Musical), executive producer Lorne Gross, McConnell, and the Raven Banner team.

“Samuel Gradius, a 500-year-old vampire, has lived far too long and wants to die. Not content with simple suicide, he decides to go out in the ways of old: in battle. Entrenched in a vicious mob-run city, he sets out to challenge the descendants of the great warriors he has faced in his past in hopes of finding someone worthy.”

Raven Banner’s Michael Paszt says of the project, “We’ve been looking for a cool action/horror hybrid, and The Eternal fits perfectly.”

“It’s exciting for me to work with Justin on this film. I really enjoyed his last film, The Collapsed, and think this will be a great follow-up,” added Avi Federgreen. “I’m happy to work with the Raven Banner team again, as they did a fantastic job getting my last film out to the world. They really seem to understand the project, and I can’t wait to finally get this film in front of an audience.”
