The Walking Dead: Q&A with Sarah Wayne Callies (Lori Grimes); Another Clip from Episode 3.05 - Say The Word

Fans of the comic on which "The Walking Dead" is based weren't too surprised by the demise of a major character last night, but the "how" did catch us a bit off guard. Here's a Q&A with Sarah Wayne Callies (Lori) discussing the death, a secret tradition of the cast, and more.

Q: That was a powerful episode! What was it like to watch your character meet her end?

A: It was interesting because we shot [Episode 4] in June. There was a whole emotional process of getting it together and shooting it, grieving and saying goodbye to everyone. That process was more or less complete a while ago. And then I sat down and watched it! I was nervous because I was expecting it to hurt, but I was so proud of Chandler [Riggs] and proud to say I was a part of helping to build that show. I think Lori's death did justice to that; she was a remarkable and powerful woman, and she was given a remarkable and powerful death. Pride and gratitude were what I came away with.

Q: When did you find out that this season would be Lori's last?

A: I was at a refugee camp in Thailand in February. I came back and got off the plane and basically did an interview right away. I got off of that call and got one from Glen Mazzara, who said we're going to lose Lori. It was an interesting sequence of events because my mind was not on the show at all; it was wrapped up with issues about medical care and gender safety in this refugee camp. I think it put it in its proper perspective: which is that it's very hard and very sad and it's a television show. I'm grateful I got to do this for two and a half seasons.

Q: After you left the set in Atlanta, was it difficult to keep Lori's death a secret?

A: Most of what I told people was true, which was that this season has such a big cast that it takes place in two locations -- and every character has time off. But I was also deliberately misleading people...There have been a lot of questions that I've had to answer really creatively. I'm really relieved that I can stop doing that now.

Q: Did you do anything in particular to put your character to rest?

A: We started having death dinners for everyone who got killed off the show beginning in Season 1. After some one's last episode, all the actors would go out to dinner together and raise a glass to them. Those dinners became a big tradition. We're a bigger cast so we have to be a bit more private. Steven came up to me during Episode 1 this season and he said, "I don't think you should have to do your own death dinner," and he said he'd do it for me. And I said, "Wow, that's incredibly sweet." And he came up to me a week later and said, "How do you do it?" And I said, "You find a restaurant that has a private room and you tell them that you're throwing a birthday party." And he kept coming up to me and was like, "But which restaurant?" It ended up being, adorably, twice as much work! The whole cast came though and I said a farewell.

The Walking Dead: Q&A with Sarah Wayne Callies (Lori Grimes); Another Clip from Episode 3.05 - Say The Word

Q: Looking back, what are some favorite memories from being on the show?

A: One of my favorite moments was watching Andy Lincoln drive! I think he got his license about a year before we started the show. And he's English. Watching Andy try and drive the Cherokee was hilarious. At a certain point we had to pull it over because green flames were coming out of the hood. He'd never really get it into gear because the labels that showed you what gear you were in were gone. In a late episode last season, Lori is on the porch while Rick and Glenn are leaving to go after Hershel. I've said goodbye to Rick and he's supposed to drive away, but he couldn't get that thing into gear! He was just staring daggers at me.

Q: Was there anything about playing a pregnant woman that was similar to the experience of being pregnant?

A: The belly -- the pregnancy rig -- was a trip. No matter what I had for breakfast, when I put that belly on I was starving, every time. And people just knew eventually and they would have a chicken sandwich ready for me. They had the belly in foam originally, but I told them to put the fifteen pounds in -- the way a baby would weigh -- so I don't have to act it. It jacked up my back pretty good. But playing a pregnant woman is way easier because you can take it off.

A teaser trailer has come our way for Ghost of Goodnight Lane, starring Billy Zane (Titanic), Lacey Chabert (Mean Girls), Danielle Harris (Halloween), Matt Dallas ("Kyle XY"), and Richard Tyson (Black Hawk Down). Check it out, and look for more on the spooker soon.

Synopsis:
Written and directed by Alin Bijan, Ghost of Goodnight Lane is inspired by real events occurring at Bijan’s Texas production company, Media World Studios. “We’ve known for a long time we had a ghost here in the studio,” says Bijan. “Over the years we kept a running log, kind of a diary, to document incidents as they occurred.” Staff and visitors experienced visions of an unknown man, heavy equipment moving on its own, and even an invisible slap to the face.

It had never been his intention to create a movie based on the documented incidents that occur on a weekly basis. It wasn’t until 2010, when paranormal activity investigators confirmed the presence of paranormal activity in the studio, that Bijan began to think he might have the makings of a fantastic horror film.

A team of investigators found the studio to be “haunted” based on results from field tests and recorded electronic voice phenomena (EVP). "A horror film about a haunted movie studio, that's being shot in the same studio where the story was inspired, immediately creates buzz that cannot be manufactured. We couldn't resist being involved," states J. D. Sanders, whose FTG Media Group serves as the independent film's executive producer.

Exclusive Interview: Writer/Director Ciarán Foy Talks Citadel and More

Exclusive Interview: Writer/Director Ciarán Foy Talks Citadel and MoreThis week writer/director Ciarán Foy's highly impressive feature film debut Citadel (review here) is set to hit limited theaters nationwide courtesy of Cinedigm Entertainment, and to get you guys ready, we recently caught up with the filmmaker to hear more about the project.

A film that debuted rather impressively at the 2012 SXSW Film Festival this past March (taking home the Midnighter Audience Award), Citadel has garnered a multitude of accolades this year during its impressive festival run, and now that the flick is finally hitting the big screen in theaters, we heard from Foy about how his own real-life trauma influenced the film's hero, Tommy (Aneurin Barnard), as well as more on his approach to creating palpable atmosphere and what's coming up next for him.

Check out our exclusive interview with up-and-coming director Foy below, and make sure to check out Citadel in theaters November 9th.

Dread Central: Because Citadel is based on your own personal experiences, is a lot of what we see in Tommy reflective of what you went through after your own attack then? And I thought Aneurin's performance as Tommy was really fantastic.

Ciarán Foy:Yeah, when you're writing from such a personal perspective like I did on this movie, it's inevitable that aspects of your own life or experiences will make it in there. Especially because my attack was what inspired this story. But when Aneurin came on board, he really made this character his own- there are aspects I still recognize as parts of myself, but Tommy is all Aneurin; he even made some changes to the character from how I had written him because he felt like once he really began to know his character, he felt like Tommy would have made some different choices.

To me that was really interesting because it was like seeing a 3D version of myself in this in some ways, but as a whole Tommy became something completely else, and that's due to Aneurin's brilliant performance. He did things with the character I never could have expected, and it was wonderful.

Related Story:SXSW 2012 Exclusive Interview: Writer/Director Ciaran Foy & Co-Stars Aneurin Barnard and Wunmi Mosaku Talk Citadel

Dread Central: The atmosphere in Citadel was pretty remarkable, and it's easy to see now why you've been cleaning up at the festivals this year (laughs); can you discuss where you found some influences for the look and feel of the project?

Ciarán Foy:Yeah, thanks, we've been incredibly lucky (laughs); the atmosphere in this is a bit two-fold to me. I definitely wanted Citadel to feel like many of my own favorite horror movies- the classics from the 70's as well as more recent movies like Jacob's Ladder. There's something almost tangible to that kind of atmosphere- the dread and the terror consumes you while you're watching those kinds of movies, and that's the feeling I wanted to evoke in audiences with Citadel.

I'm not a fan of the more nihilistic horror movies, the kind where you feel like you need a shower afterwards. I'm also not a huge fan of forced jump scares or cheap frights so creating a palpable atmosphere was one of my biggest concerns here from start to finish.

Oh, and relatability was another of my primary concerns on Citadel; I wanted to make sure that I wrote characters that audiences would care about. I hate going to a movie where I really have no interest in the characters once the movie is over- I always feel like I enjoy a movie more when I can have some kind of emotional connection to either the story or the characters, and that’s what I hope I've done on Citadel. The atmosphere and the relatability of this story were the key notes for me to hit in order to make an engaging horror movie.

Dread Central: I thought the feral kids were exceptionally creepy as well in this; can you talk about what inspired the look and the backstory of these creatures?

Ciarán Foy:Fundamentally, they were the same kids who attacked me- hoodies. I never saw the faces of my attackers so it was a conscientious choice on my part that you don't really see the faces of the hoodies in the movie- or at least not until late in the third act. And even then I wanted to make sure what you saw was not normal at all. These weren't 'regular' kids that Tommy was up against.

We also had to give them a backstory that felt organic to the real world but didn't try to over-explain anything either. As a movie fan I think sometimes a movie can get ruined when you over-explain things. It kills the fear, and so I came up with the mold-based mythology for the kids that felt plausible but also incredibly creepy; the mold not only turned them into these feral 'things' but also has begun to become part of their own chemistry as well- we even gave the creatures a 'moldy' look in their design, like the mold was starting to grow off of them the more they would consume it. I thought their look and their story came out rather well, too.

Dread Central: Well, now that Citadel is getting a theatrical release, what's on the horizon for you? Are you planning on continuing to work in the genre world?

Ciarán Foy:Oh, definitely, I love telling these kind of stories so the genre world is where I'd like to stay for a while- either doing horror or sci-fi. And I am working on a couple of things right now that are in the sci-fi realm, but horror is certainly something I'd like to return to after that. I really want to find a story that speaks to me first before I decide my next feature. But right now I'm just currently doing a rewrite on a sci-fi project that I was hired for, and other than that I've just been reading a lot of scripts in the UK and in the US as well.

Synopsis
Tommy Cowley (Aneurin Barnard) lives a quiet life in a decaying apartment complex with his highly pregnant wife. The couple is attacked one day by a group of hooded young thugs, and after a shocking act of violence, Tommy is left to raise his newborn daughter alone.

So shaken by the events that he’s developed extreme agoraphobia, Tommy alternates days hiding out indoors in his new flat from imagined threats and intense therapy sessions aimed at bringing him back to normalcy.

When the same hooded gang, seemingly intent on kidnapping his daughter, begins terrorizing his life again, he’s torn between his paralyzing fear and protective parental instinct. With the help of a vigilante priest who has uncovered the genesis of this ruthless, potentially supernatural gang, Tommy must overcome his fears and venture into the heart of the abandoned tower block known as the CITADEL to save his family.

Winner of the Midnighter Audience Award at the 2012 SXSW Film Festival, CITADEL brings a fresh take to classic horror by raising the question: How can you protect your family from evil when you’re afraid of everything?

These landmark releases will contain a wealth of special features, additional collector’s material, and never-before-seen extras including optional English/Italian opening titles, a UK exclusive introduction to the film from lead actor Ian McCulloch, and a number of brand new featurettes.

Available as a Limited Edition Steelbook (complete with limited edition artwork), Limited Edition Slipbox (with 4 alternate artworks – available exclusively from Arrow Video), and as standard edition Blu-ray and DVD, a complete list of the special features included in these highly anticipated Zombie Flesh Eaters releases is as follows:

- Optional original, restored Italian and English Mono 2.0 audio
- Audio commentary with screenwriter Elisa Briganti, moderated by Calum Waddell

- “ALIENS, CANNIBALS AND ZOMBIES: A TRILOGY OF ITALIAN TERROR” – Actor Ian McCulloch remembers his three classics of Latin horror lunacy - ZOMBIE FLESH EATERS, CONTAMINATION and ZOMBI HOLOCAUST
- “FROM ROMERO TO ROME: THE RISE AND FALL OF THE ITALIAN ZOMBIE FILM” – Veteran Fulci screenwriters Dardano Sacchetti (THE BEYOND) and Antonio Tentori (CAT IN THE BRAIN), celebrated UK critic Kim Newman and filmmakers Luigi Cozzi (CONTAMINATION), Ruggero Deodato (CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST), Russ Streiner (NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD) plus many more share memories of the genesis of corpse -crunching cinema - from Romero's early templates to the gory glory days of Fulci and his many successors.
- “THE MEAT MUNCHING MOVIES OF GINO DE ROSSI” – The special effects magician behind many Italian splatter classics talks about his most famous gore-drenched greats - and shows props from many plasma-packed masterworks - including ZOMBIE FLESH EATERS, CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD, THE HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY, CANNIBAL FEROX, BURIAL GROUND and PIRANHA II.
- “ZOMBIE FLESH EATERS - FROM SCRIPT TO SCREEN” – Dardano Sacchetti shows key pages from his original ISLAND OF THE LIVING DEAD screenplay.
- Trailers and TV spots
- Collector’s booklet featuring brand new writing on the film by Fulci biographer Stephen Thrower, a new interview with star Olga Karlatos by Calum Waddell, a history of Zombie Flesh Eaters and the BBFC by Craig Lapper , one of the board’s senior examiners, and extracts of the original ‘Nightmare Island’ 1978 script including unfilmed, alternate, and more gory sequences as well as a Lucio Fulci CV compiled by Jay Slater.

Hailing from the now infamous “Video Nasty” era of horror films, Zombie Flesh Eaters became an unstoppable cult hit upon its release in 1979. The film divided opinion across the globe and came up against opposition in many territories for the sheer amount of bloody content and its high gore factor. The original cut of Zombie Flesh Eaters was banned in the UK upon release, and the film that appeared in cinemas was an edited version with a full 2 minutes of brutality stripped out to get past the classification board. These new high definition restored editions contain the full unedited film, as Fulci made them to be seen.

From the sleazy video nasty vaults comes a movie so stained with controversy and moral indignation that the very mention of its name sends shudders down the spines of the weak stomached and censorious – Zombie Flesh Eaters. A gut-munching, shark wrestling, eye-gouging orgy of topless skin divers, mud-caked undead terror, and Italian splatter from the dark imagination of horror genius Lucio Fulci (The Beyond, City of The Living Dead).

An abandoned boat in New York Harbour unleashes a deadly flesh crazed zombie cargo... A young American woman and a journalist investigate a tropical island where a deadly disease is making the dead walk... Soon, thoughts of getting to the bottom of the murderous curse will be forgotten, as Fulci’s walking corpses overwhelm the living and reports come in that the Big Apple is swarming with the living dead...

After more than thirty years, Zombie Flesh Eaters still has the power to shock and offend the unwilling... Check out this classic ‘sadist video’ and revel in a wonderfully offensive movie that once helped usher in a moral panic!

Chucky Doesn't Curse in First Look at Curse of ChuckyRecently a video interview surfaced with Curse of Chucky director Don Mancini in which we glimpse what looks like some sales art for the film. Synopsis
Nica (Fiona Dourif) is grieving over the gruesome suicide of her mother when her domineering older sister Barb (Danielle Bisutti) arrives with her young family in tow to help settle their mother’s affairs. As the sisters butt heads over Nica’s plans for the future, Barb’s young daughter comforts herself with a grinning, red-haired talking doll named Chucky (voiced again by Brad Dourif) that recently arrived mysteriously in the mail. But as a string of brutal murders begins to terrorize the household, Nica suspects the doll may hold the key to the bloodshed. What she doesn’t know is that Chucky has a personal score to settle. He’s determined to finish a job he started more than 20 years earlier, and this time he’s going to see it through to the bloody and shocking end.

New Stills from Hitchcock Show Off the Supporting Players

A new batch of photos has arrived that shows off Hitchcock's version of the cast members from Psycho--Jessica Biel as Vera Miles, Scarlett Johansson as Janet Leigh, and James D'Arcy as Anthony Perkins--as well as a few others.

Also included in the shots below are Michael Stuhlbarg as talent agent and studio executive Lew Wasserman and Toni Collette as Hitchcock's assistant Peggy Robertson.

The film, which is billed as “a love story about one of the most influential filmmakers of the last century, Alfred Hitchcock, and his wife and partner, Alma Reville,” takes place during the making of Hitchcock’s seminal movie Psycho. Anthony Hopkins plays Hitchcock, and Helen Mirren stars as his wife. Scarlett Johansson, Danny Huston, Toni Collette, Jessica Biel, Michael Stuhlbarg, James D’Arcy, Michael Wincott, Richard Portnow, and Kurtwood Smith also star.

The project is based on the non-fiction book by Stephen Rebello that tracks how Hitchcock, at the height of his game as a director, decided to make a “lowly” horror movie. No studio wanted to touch it initially so Hitchcock scrounged for financing by himself. The movie, of course, became one of his biggest hits and one of the most influential of all time.

Claudia Lewis, President of Production, and David Greenbaum, Senior Vice President of Production, are overseeing the project for Fox Searchlight Pictures.
