Guest Blog: Anatomy of the Cover of Criminal Macabre: Final Night #1 by Justin Erickson

Issue #1 of the historic IDW/Dark Horse crossover comic Criminal Macabre: Final Night from Steve Niles arrives December 12th, and we have a look at the process artist Justin Erickson used to create the cover.

Some of Niles’ greatest characters come together in a final showdown in Criminal Macabre: Final Night - The 30 Days of Night Crossover, which features artwork by Christopher Mitten.

Related Story:Check Out Three Pages from the IDW/Dark Horse Crossover Criminal Macabre: Final Night - The 30 Days of Night Crossover #1

Here's how Erickson, a Toronto-based illustrator and graphic designer, describes the Issue #1 cover's creation:

- Since this is a crossover of two different Steve Niles properties (from two different publishers), it was very important that both get equal prominence on the cover. Given a rough plot line by Dark Horse, I produced five thumbnail concept sketches. As it's the first in a series, this cover needed to introduce the two central characters, Cal MacDonald from Criminal Macabre and Eben Olemaun from 30 Days of Night.

Guest Blog: Anatomy of the Cover of Criminal Macabre: Final Night by Justin Erickson

- Once a concept was selected, I then developed the rough sketch into a slightly less rough drawing that I would use to begin the final illustration. I work digitally, and since the "pencil" stage is never seen, I only develop it as far as it needs to go to indicate composition and form.

Guest Blog: Anatomy of the Cover of Criminal Macabre: Final Night by Justin Erickson

- From the slightly less rough sketch, I mock up a few colour schemes. This one won out for me because Cal's blue skin references him being a newly turned ghoul, and the red fire implies the incoming threat of Eben's hoard descending on LA.

Guest Blog: Anatomy of the Cover of Criminal Macabre: Final Night by Justin Erickson

- Once a colour scheme is hammered out, I then begin the final illustration! My process varies depending on the piece. Sometimes I work up everything all at once, or I develop one specific area to near completion, then move on to another. In this case I first worked on Eben's face primarily, then Cal's after.

Guest Blog: Anatomy of the Cover of Criminal Macabre: Final Night by Justin Erickson

- Now it's on to Cal's face! Once that's done, I bring it into Photoshop to play with colours and add texture.

Guest Blog: Anatomy of the Cover of Criminal Macabre: Final Night by Justin Erickson

- Once the illustration is finalized, I then apply the typography. And we're done!

Synopsis:
Cal McDonald only wanted a beer, but what he got was a jaded federal agent and a story about vampires up in Barrow, Alaska. There’s a new vamp in LA, and he’s hellbent on escalating his attacks. When Mo’Lock’s sometimes ghoul-friend is murdered, Cal’s on the hunt ... for Eben—the longtime protagonist/antagonist of 30 Days of Night.

During the crush of news and artwork that came out of AFM this year, we had an update on Dimension's Kristy, which is now being called Satanic, and today comes word of some possible casting for the film.

According to The Wrap, The Twilight Saga star Ashley Greene is being eyed for The Weinstein Company’s much-awaited new horror feature. Best known for playing Alice Cullen in the Twilight franchise, Greene most recently appeared in The Apparition.

She would join Haley Bennett in the film, which is being produced by TWC along with David Kirschner (Child's Play franchise); Corey Sienega (Frailty, Bride of Chucky); Jamie Patricof, and Lynette Howell (Blue Valentine, Place Beyond the Pines). Olly Blackburn (Donkey Punch) is directing from a script by Anthony Jaswinski (Vanishing on Seventh Street, See No Evil).

Satanic is expected to film in New Orleans from mid-November through much of December, according to a listing with Louisiana Entertainment, which handles local film shoots.

Synopsis:
With the rest of the campus at home for the Thanksgiving holiday, Justine and a few of her friends spend the weekend in their college dormitory: studying, relaxing, and blissfully unaware of the terror that is about to unfold outside in the cold. Suddenly, confronted by a gang of violent outcasts, Justine's quiet long weekend becomes one long lesson in survival as she and her classmates are terrorized in increasingly bizarre and brutal ways, leaving it up to her to figure out who her attackers are… and if they can be stopped.

AFM 2012: Sales Art, Stills, and Official Synopsis of Devil's Knot

$
0
0

With the 2012 American Film Market now officially over, we have a few odds and ends of sales art and other information to share, and first up is an early look at Dimension Films'Devil's Knot along with the official synopsis.

Synopsis:
From Academy Award nominated director Atom Egoyan (The Sweet Hereafter) and starring Oscar winners Colin Firth (The King's Speech) and Reese Witherspoon (Walk the Line), comes the true story of a crime that would grip a nation for almost two decades and that continues to be one of the most high-profile trials of all time.

Based on the bestseller by Mara Leveritt, Devil's Knot recounts the trial and conviction of teenagers Damien Echols (James Hamrick), Jessie Misskelley, Jr. (Kristopher Higgins), and Jason Baldwin (Seth Meriwether) for the savage murder of three, eight-year-old boys in the small town of West Memphis, Arkansas, in 1993. Dubbed the so-called "West Memphis Three," the defendants, each of them a social outsider, quickly found themselves up against a community crying out for justice as well as a lack of physical evidence that led police to believe the murders were carried out as part of a satanic occult ritual.

Firth stars as Ron Lax in the film, a local private investigator and one of the first people to support the teens in their defense. Witherspoon plays Pam Hobbs, the mother of one of the murdered boys. Together they allow an uncompromising look at both sides of a town torn apart… and that will probably never be the same again.

The script was written by Egoyan, Scott Derrickson, and Paul Harris Boardman based on Leveritt's novel. Co-stars include Kevin Durand, Alessandro Nivola, Mireille Enos, Amy Ryan, Bruce Greenwood, and Stephen Moyer.

“There’s no trailer yet,” Butler, who starred in 2010’s I Spit on Your Grave and who in The Stranger Inside stars opposite Estella Warren (2001’s Planet of the Apes) and William Baldwin (Backdraft), said of the film,“[but] they had a sales trailer that I saw and went crazy about. It's gonna be so good! I'll let you know as soon as there's anything to report.”

Written, produced (with Michael Aoun and Paul Tilly), and directed by Neutzsky-Wulff, The Stranger Inside filmed earlier this year in Mallorca, Spain, as well as in Copenhagen, Denmark, and New York, New York. Jeffrey Pierce ("Fear Itself"), Kim Bodnia (Pusher), and Katia Winter ("Dexter") also star.

As for the narrative, the plot revolves around a beautiful young actress (Warren) who has a hard time distinguishing dreams from reality. To help her recover from a traumatic experience, she and her psychiatrist husband (Baldwin) vacation on a deserted island in the Mediterranean. Suddenly a young traveler (Butler) shows up after trying to save her boyfriend from a fatal fall. The jealousy between the two women drives the actress to throw her out, which prompts the traveler to...

Dead Space 3 will release next year for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Players will be able to jump into the new nightmare with a friend and battle the evil to come. Now, if you dare, check out these bloody new screenshots!

Synopsis:
Dead Space 3 is going to rock with co-op! Dead Space 3 offers gamers a chance to experience this thrilling experience alone or with a friend. The single player game will have players fighting an isolated experience as Isaac takes on this spine-tingling new adventure by himself, without any AI follower. Visceral Games made it a point to make co-op a completely separate experience that adds more to the Dead Space lore. It is an innovative approach to co-op that adds depth to the co-op character, John Carver's, story.

When playing in co-op, Carver can unlock side missions focused around his backstory that also dips into his ongoing struggles with dementia so Carver may see things that Isaac doesn’t, adding a new psychological element to the thrills of the game. These screens give players a look into one of those missions called Marker Containment, where Isaac is helping Carver deal with visions of his lost son and wife.

Dead Space 3 will be available on February 5, 2013, for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. Visit the official Dead Space 3 website to learn more about the game.

So shaken by the events that he’s developed extreme agoraphobia, Tommy alternates days hiding out indoors in his new flat from imagined threats and intense therapy sessions aimed at bringing him back to normalcy.

When the same hooded gang, seemingly intent on kidnapping his daughter, begins terrorizing his life again, he’s torn between his paralyzing fear and protective parental instinct. Filmed this past April in Hollywood, California (see our coverage from the set here), Zombie Family was written and directed by Weisman and stars Mike Apple as ‘Bill’ (the zombie patriarch), actress Laura Napoli as ‘Betty’ (the unit's undead matriarch) and Chuck Lines and Allison Sharpe as the pair's teenage, zombie offspring. Actors Kerry O’Quinn, Doug Jones (Hellboy), Reggie Bannister (Phantasm), Tony Todd (Candyman) and Cerina Vincent (Cabin Fever, MoniKa) round out the cast.

Zombie Family to Become a Feature? Here's an Update with New Photos!

“I was very excited to have had the support of Funny Or Die debuting Zombie Family exclusively through Halloween,” said Weisman of the two episodes (“Death of a Salesman” and "Book of the Dead Report”) which that website spotlighted. “They were the perfect launching pad for a horror/comedy series such as this, and the response greatly exceeded all expectations,” he continued. “Word of mouth going forward now means everything for something grassroots like this show, which will be the ‘make it or break it’ factor for Zombie Family’s future.”

As for that, “There are three more seasons in the pipeline, which would then be compiled with the first season for an eventual DVD/VOD release,” said Weisman of his plans for the series, which thus far has attracted 25,000-plus views and is climbing higher each day. “You’ll get to see the much-anticipated origin of the Zombie Family, and going forward in narrative, they will also evolve as they adapt to life among the living, gaining slightly increased cognitive abilities and motor skills.”

“But don’t worry,” he laughed. “They will still be brain-eating, misunderstood and murderous.”

Regarding the future of the property,“The response from executives has been overwhelming,” offered Weisman, “and although nothing is signed yet, there are discussions for either a television series or a feature film adaptation.”

So where can you see Zombie Family now? You'll find two episodes below, and if you want more...

“The show has been moved to its own Zombie Family YouTube channel, and I encourage horror and comedy fans alike to go watch all eight episodes which are live now,” said the filmmaker. “There are so many great performances from not only the amazing principal cast, but also from all of those who appeared in cameos as well.”

Synopsis
Eli Roth & Strike Entertainment bring us an even more terrifying and bigger scale sequel to THE LAST EXORCISM that grossed $70 million worldwide. It looks like Nell Sweetzer’s last exorcism was not foolproof. She is back… and so are her demons.

Continuing where the first film left off, teenage Nell Sweetzer is found dirty and terrified in the woods having just escaped a demon ritual in which a cult helped her give birth to a demon baby. Confused and scared, Nell is examined by doctors but she doesn’t remember much about the previous few months except that as a result of everything, her family is now dead. She is moved into Davreaux – a girls’ halfway house in New Orleans, where she will try to put her life back together with the help of the therapist, Frank Merle. She even begins to date a boy named Chris and starts a job at a local hotel.

But something doesn’t feel right to Nell. She is being sought after by the demon who possessed her in the first LAST EXORCISM. It wants Nell, but in a different way than before…
