Trailer for Indonesian Supernatural Airline Disaster Flick Flight 574 Tragedy Provides Today's Comedy

$

You don’t hear a whole lot about Indonesian cinema here in the United States. That’s kind of a shame when I watch a trailer like the one for their haunted airplane disaster flick Flight 574 Tragedy. I think we’re being denied some real comedy gold.

It's probably a good time to mention that Flight 574 Tragedy (or Tragedi Penerbangan 574 as it’s known in its native country) is not meant to be a comedy. At least I don’t think it’s meant to be a comedy. But the sight of that burning cockpit and the whirling camerawork representing the plane spinning out of control sure had me chuckling.

24FramesPerSecond.net brings us news of the film and a trailer:

Flight 574 Tragedy tells the story of four teenagers who were on vacation in Surabaya. One of their friends had a horrific accident and was killed while the three others survived. They intend to fly the body of their friend home to Manado by chartered commercial aircraft, but the journey is marred by terror after terror on the plane. One by one, casualties mount up due to a ghost demanding revenge, until the plane crashes into the ocean. Air traffic control manages to pinpoint where the plane sinks, and a fishing boat finds survivors amongst the ruins. Jubilant at being rescued, they seemed not to realize their terror is far from over.

Here’s the weird part of the story. A Google search revealed that this movie is loosely based on an actual Flight 574 that crashed off the coast of Indonesia in 2007, the cause of which was determined to have been the pilots inadvertently disconnecting the autopilot while trying to correct the navigation system. No stories of supernatural happenings being in any way involved.

So, essentially, what we have here is the equivalent of making a movie called Space Shuttle Columbia Tragedy that explains the cause of its explosion upon reentry to be due to an extraterrestrial invader onboard raising hell.

Flight 574 Tragedy was written, directed, and produced by a bunch of people you’ve most likely never heard of with far too many letters in their names. Chances are it will never see the light of day over here in the US. So this trailer is most likely the most we’ll ever get to see. Take two minutes out of your life to savor it.

Exclusive: Q&A with Paranormal Activity 4 Co-Star Aiden Lovekamp

He may only be seven years old, but up-and-coming child actor Aiden Lovekamp still managed to deliver a majorly creepy performance as youngster Wyatt in Paranormal Activity 4, which premiered last month in theaters everywhere.

In this third sequel we meet Wyatt and his family as they deal with a strange neighbor boy named Robbie (Brady Allen), who comes to stay with them after his mom is rushed to the hospital. Once Robbie arrives, strange things begin happening, which has sinister effects on everyone around him, including Wyatt.

Dread Central recently had the chance to chat with the precocious actor about his experiences working on PA 4 and heard more about how he got involved, whether or not he was scared at all while making the movie, and what's coming up next with him.

Exclusive: Q&A with Paranormal Activity 4 Co-Star Aiden Lovekamp

Check out our exclusive Q&A with Lovekamp below!

Dread Central: How did you get involved with Paranormal Activity 4? Was it the normal audition process?

Aiden Lovekamp:A little bit; they had me do a lot of improv. I also got to dance and sing with Rel (Ariel Schulman) and Henry (Joost). It was a lot of fun. I guess they thought I was a really good actor or something.

Dread Central: Did you know about these movies (and all the fans) before you got the part of Wyatt? What did you like best about your character?

Aiden Lovekamp:No, not really; I never saw them, but I remember walking in on my mom watching one of them last year. I wanted to watch, but she wouldn't let me.  I liked being able to be two different kids in this movie; it was really cool being a sweet fun kid and then turning into a zombie kid at the end.

Dread Central: Did Henry and Ariel help you prepare for shooting in any special ways at all? How was it working with them?

Aiden Lovekamp:Yes, Rel and Henry were awesome; they would dance and sing with me before scenes, and then they would tell me 'work house' when it was time to work again. They were my best friends!

Dread Central: Did you enjoy working with your onscreen family, too?

Aiden Lovekamp:Yes! I love Katie (Featherston); she was so fun to hang out with. She did creep me out, though, when she looked scary.  I'm really close with my onscreen sister, Kathryn (Newton), who played Alex. She really treats me like I'm her little brother. Matt (Shively) was awesome, too; he’s like my older brother, and we played a lot on set.

Brady (Allen), who played Robbie, and I played Lego Batman on our PSVita, and we watched movies when we weren't filming. We also danced a lot. Stephen (Dunham), my dad in the movie, and I made up our own song and dance to the Smarty Pants Dance; and Alexondra (Lee), my mom in the movie, was really great and she was so nice.

Exclusive: Q&A with Paranormal Activity 4 Co-Star Aiden Lovekamp

Dread Central: Because this is such a scary movie, did you get scared at all while making PA 4?

Aiden Lovekamp:I only got scared once; I had to go and hide in my closet upstairs when Katie was coming for me, and it was so dark that I got really freaked out because I was by myself and I couldn't see anything.

Dread Central: Have you been allowed to see the movie (since it is pretty scary even for adults), and if you have, did it scare you as much as it did everyone else?

Aiden Lovekamp:Yes! I’ve seen it seven times- it’s so cool.  I didn't get scared because my mom made me close my eyes at all of the really scary parts.

Dread Central: What's coming up next for you?

Aiden Lovekamp:I have a commercial for Nook tablet that is running right now and also a KFC commercial where my dad steals my bites while I’m hiding.  I also have two movies coming out. One is the Time Being with Wes Bentley (The Hunger Games). He plays my dad in the film.  I also have a part in the movie Lonely Boy that should be out next year, too.  I go out on a lot of auditions so I hope to get some more movies and TV shows.

Paranormal Activity 4 (review), directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, is in theaters everywhere NOW. Don't forget to check out our exclusive Paranormal Activity Timeline to really relive the ghosts of Halloween past!

New Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Promo Image Armed and Dangerous

The powers-that-be at Fox have been circulating an image today in honor of director Matt Reeves' upcoming Dawn of the Planet of the Apes along with the tagline "Evolution becomes revolution," and we have a peek at it for you right here.

Mind you, this is not an official still or bit of artwork from the film but is instead a 1992 art piece by Albert Watson titled "Monkey with Gun." Still, it more than conveys the message, does it not?

New Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Promo Image Armed and Dangerous

Matt Reeves, stepping into the shoes originally worn by Rupert Wyatt, is directing the sequel to Fox’s 2011 hit Rise of the Planet of the Apes, with the new movie continuing the story of how ultra-intelligent simian Caesar presides over the fall of human civilization.

Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa, who penned the first installment, wrote the initial draft for Dawn. Scott Burns had written a draft for Wyatt, but when Reeves came on board, the studio and producers wanted something tailored specifically for him and hired Mark Bomback to do a rewrite. It should also be noted that Bomback did some uncredited script doctoring on Rise.

Andy Serkis is returning as Caesar, and Peter Chernin is back as producer. Fox has set a May 23, 2014, release date.

Look for more as it comes.

David R. Ellis Begins to Sprawl Out for BlumhouseDavid R. Ellis is a director with several entertaining genre titles under his belt such as Final Destination 2 and Snakes on a Plane. We're still trying to forget about Shark Night and The Final Destination so hopefully with this new flick he can get back on track.

Deadline reports that Ellis is set to direct Sprawl, a horror thriller that Jason Blum’s Blumhouse is setting up to begin production early next year. The film is expected to go through Blumhouse’s deal with Universal, but that is still formalizing itself. Jordan Goldberg and Alex Paraskevas wrote the script.

Unfortunately that's all we know as of press time, but we'll be keeping an eye on things for you!

Syfy Announces a Premiere Date for the 12 Disasters of ChristmasIt was way back in December of 2011 when Foy first alerted us to 12 Disasters of Christmas from Cinetel, and now, finally, Syfy has announced a release date for the film. Read on for the details!

From the Press Release:
Just in time for the joyous holiday season, the new Syfy Original Movie 12 Disasters of Christmas takes on the ancient Mayan prophecy of worldwide destruction at the end of 2012.

In 12 Disasters of Christmas, premiering Saturday, December 8, at 9PM (ET/PT) on “The Most Dangerous Night of Television,” mysterious disasters connected to the Mayan prediction as well as the iconic holiday song "The 12 Days of Christmas" are systematically destroying a small town and spreading throughout the world.

A father (Ed Quinn; "Eureka," Starship Troopers 2) learns that his daughter (Magda Aponowicz; "Kyle XY,""Caprica") is really the “Chosen One” who, alone, can stop further catastrophe – if he can stave off the lunatic townspeople blaming her for the community’s destruction. The movie also stars Donnelly Rhodes ("Battlestar Galactica").

The above artwork is from our initial story late last year; we should have an update - and a trailer - to share soon!

It seems like we've been talking about the Stephen King/John Mellencamp collaboration Ghost Brothers of Darkland County for years now, but finally we can all get a look - and listen - at it when a deluxe edition DVD/CD is released next year.

Per Rolling Stone, the DVD/CD, featuring the soundtrack, handwritten lyrics, and a mini-documentary about the making of the musical, is hitting shelves on March 19, 2013. The soundtrack features guest singers Elvis Costello, Sheryl Crow, Taj Mahal, Kris Kristofferson, and Mellencamp himself. See the full track listing and listen to Costello's "That's Me" below.

Track Listing:
"That's Me," Elvis Costello
"That's Who I Am," Neko Case
"So Goddamn Smart," Dave Alvin, Phil Alvin, Sheryl Crow
"Wrong, Wrong, Wrong About Me," Elvis Costello
"Brotherly Love," Ryan Bingham, Will Dailey
"How Many Days," Kris Kristofferson
"You Are Blind," Ryan Bingham
"Home Again," Sheryl Crow, Dave Alvin, Phil Alvin, Taj Mahal
"You Don't Know Me," Rosanne Cash
"My Name Is Joe," Clyde Mulroney
"Tear This Cabin Down," Taj Mahal
"And Your Days Are Gone," Sheryl Crow, Dave Alvin, Phil Alvin
"Jukin'," Sheryl Crow
"What Kind of Man Am I," Kris Kristofferson, Phil Alvin, Sheryl Crow Dave Alvin, Taj Mahal
"So Goddamn Good," Phil Alvin, Dave Alvin, Sheryl Crow
"Away From This World," Sheryl Crow
"Truth," John Mellencamp

RS also provided a bit of background info:

Mellencamp got the initial idea for the musical in the late Nineties from his own cabin in Bloomington, which he claims is haunted. In the 1930s two brothers got into a fight over a woman at the cabin, and one of them wound up dead. The surviving brother and the woman sped away in a car but crashed into a lake and drowned. "I called up Stephen King and told him I wanted to make a musical out of the thing," says Mellencamp. "It's outside both of our wheelhouses."

King only vaguely knew Mellencamp when he got the call. "He came to my place in Florida, and it was the first time we ever met in person," says King. "He tuned my guitar and told me this ghost story about a cabin he owned. I loved the idea they were brothers, and then years later history repeats itself. Something in that resonated with me deeply."<?i>

King agreed to write a treatment of the story – which seesaws between two sets of brothers going through a similar struggle 30 years apart at the same cabin – and Mellencamp began writing songs. They agreed early on that the songs wouldn't move the story forward. "It was Steve's job to tell the story," says Mellencamp. "It was my job to develop the characters through songs. That's different than most musicals. The best example of that is My Fair Lady. They had a story with Pygmalion so they just stuck songs in there."

As the musical got closer to completion, they brought in producer T-Bone Burnett to help flesh out the music. "The idea was for me to come in and create the vibe," Burnett says. "We took the songs and cast them with different singers and musicians and began creating what I hoped would be a foggy, ghost sound – something that grew up out of the Mississippi."

The play had a brief run at Atlanta's Alliance Theatre in April/May of this year, and Broadway is a possibility, although they also think it might work as a movie at some point in the future. "I'd love to see that," says King. "One of the other reasons I did [it] is that I'm a total whore for musicals. I love Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge, Bugsy Malone. You name it, and I just love it! It appeals to a sentimental side of me."

Whatever happens, King and Mellencamp are confident they're nearly done fiddling with it. "At this point I don't know what else we could do," says King. "Unless we set it in fucking outer space. Hey, that's not a bad idea! It could work!"

Fright Night 2 Less of a Sequel and More of a Redux?

Fright Night 2 Less of a Sequel and More of a Redux?Color us completely confused. Last week we reported that Fright Night 2 was on its way direct-to-video, and today more details have been uncovered that are... well... perplexing to say the least. Read on for the latest.

According to Bloody Disgusting, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has greenlit production for Fright Night 2 and has cast Jaime Murray (pictured below; “Warehouse 13,” “Dexter”) in the lead role as a Romanian vampire in the Eduardo Rodriguez-directed sequel.

Now for the weird part. Dig on the synopsis below:

When high school student Charlie attends a study abroad program with his horror-obsessed friend “Evil” Ed and ex-girlfriend Amy in Romania, he soon discovers their young attractive professor Gerri (Jaime Murray) is a real life vampire. Too bad no one believes him. In fact, Evil Ed finds it amusing, and it only feeds his vampire obsession. When Gerri turns Ed, Charlie seeks out Peter Vincent, the infamous vampire hunter (well, he plays one on TV) who is in Romania filming his show “Fright Night,” to teach him how to take down Gerri before she gets to Amy, who’s blood will cure Gerri of spending eternity as a vampire.

Sound just a little familiar?

Dredd Passes Judgment on DVD and Blu-ray

0

If you missed Dredd (review) during its theatrical run, wow, did you lose out on one of the better movie-going experiences of the year. Thankfully, with the flick hitting DVD and Blu-ray, you can now correct that awful lapse in judgment.

From the Press Release
Adapted by Alex Garland from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra's legendary comic book and filmed in stunning 3D, Dredd explodes onto 3-D Blu-ray Disc (includes 3D and standard versions of the film plus Digital Copy and UV), DVD (includes Digital Copy and UV), Digital Download, On Demand and Pay-Per-View January 8, 2013, from Lionsgate Home Entertainment.

Mixing pulse-pounding action with mesmerizing visual effects sequences, the post-apocalyptic thriller hailed by audiences and critics alike stars Karl Urban (Star Trek), Olivia Thirlby (Juno) and Lena Headey (HBO's "Game Of Thrones"). The hugely anticipated sci-fi thriller directed by Pete Travis (Vantage Point) takes place in a futuristic America.

The Blu-ray Disc and DVD both contain multiple behind-the-scenes featurettes including a look back at the 35 years of Judge Dredd. Dredd will be available on Blu-ray Disc and DVD for the suggested retail price of $39.99 and $29.95, respectively.

Synopsis
The future America is an irradiated wasteland. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington, DC, lies Mega City One - a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets. The only force of order lies with the urban cops called “Judges” who possess the combined powers of judge, jury, and instant executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Karl Urban) is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge – a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of “Slo-Mo” experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed.

During a routine day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation. A heinous crime calls them to a neighborhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture: a 200-story vertical slum controlled by prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) and her ruthless clan. When they capture one of the clan’s inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound’s control center and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire. With the body count climbing and no way out, Dredd and Anderson must confront the odds and engage in the relentless battle for their survival.

The endlessly inventive mind of writer Alex Garland and director Pete Travis bring Dredd to life as a futuristic neo-noir action film. Filmed in 3D with stunning slow-motion photography sequences, the film returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra's revered comic strip.

Fasten your seatbelts when a rampaging two-ton crocodile with an insatiable appetite is set loose in the city. With the army on the hunt, Croczilla will terrorize innocent people while a sexy model tries to recover millions from its belly. In the tradition of Jaws and Piranha, Croczilla is a wild ride of a creature feature, showing that Japan was just the appetizer!

Seems kind of a shame that a motion picture entitled Croczilla is finally coming into existence, but from reviews I’ve read, the film is said to be reasonably enjoyable, yet far more of a family-friendly screwball comedy than anything even remotely resembling the rampaging crocodile flick it's being marketed as.
