Truth be told, we kind of forgot about the very well reviewed Sundance flick Black Rock (review); therefore, it's a good thing this trailer has just premiered online to give us a quick and much needed reminder.

Written by Mark Duplass (Baghead, Jeff, Who Lives At Home, Cyrus) and directed by Katie Aselton, Black Rock stars Kate Bosworth, Lake Bell and Kate Aselton, who appear as three childhood friends who set aside their personal issues and reunite for a girls' weekend on a remote island off the coast of Maine. Syfy Bringing Three Haunting New Shows for 2013

0

Syfy Bringing Three Haunting New Shows for 2013The dead are more popular than ever... especially on TV, as evidenced by three new paranormal reality shows just announced by the Syfy channel. Read on for the latest on what new things will be going bump in the night for 2013.

From the Press Release:
Marking the significant expansion of its popular reality programming, Syfy today announced it is greenlighting three new series: "Ghost Mine,""Stranded," and "Notorious Hauntings." This slate builds upon Syfy’s popular paranormal reality programming block led by "Ghost Hunters,""Paranormal Witness," and "Haunted Collector."

In making the announcement, Mark Stern, President, Original Content for Syfy and Co-head, Original Content for Universal Cable Productions, said: “Each of these series takes a known and successful formula and turns it on its head. Whether it is eclectic gold miners in the midst of paranormal activity, paranormal enthusiasts self-documenting the most haunted locations in America, or investigators researching and examining history’s most notorious criminals and legends in the world’s most haunted locations, these shows celebrate imagination while further strengthening Syfy’s successful reality brand.”

"GHOST MINE" - Premieres Wednesday, January 16 at 10PM
Forgotten in the remote woods of Oregon is one of the richest gold mines in the United States that was abandoned 80 years ago when a series of tragedies gave it an infamous reputation for being haunted. Now, a new owner has decided to take on the notorious legend and reopen the mine, assembling a colorful team of miners – both seasoned and new – to battle the elements in hopes of finding their fortune and teaming them with a pair of experienced paranormal investigators.

In each of the six hour-long episodes, this strong-willed and historically superstitious group of miners will face the day-to-day challenges of mining, aided by the paranormal investigators who unravel the mysteries surrounding the mine, including historic Masonic connections and a spirit who has been known to haunt the area for generations.

"Ghost Mine" is produced by 51 Minds, an Endemol company, with Mark Cronin ("Rock of Love with Bret Michaels"), David Caplan and Jay Bluemke ("Ghost Hunters,""Ghost Hunters Academy") serving as Executive Producers.

"STRANDED" - Premieres Wednesday, February 27 at 10PM
Ping Pong Productions ("Destination Truth,""Finding Bigfoot") joins forces with Josh Gates (star of Syfy’s travel-adventure series "Destination Truth") and Jason Blum’s Blumhouse (Paranormal Activity, "The River") to create "Stranded," an all-new six-episode reality series that documents an unconventional – and terrifying – paranormal and psychological experiment. Each hour-long episode features the self-recorded footage of a diverse group of every-day paranormal enthusiasts - from newlyweds and a brother-in-law to a trio of roommates. Each team of three will be stranded at one of the most haunted locations in America and record the entire experience with hand-held cameras.

The footage from the subjects’ cameras will be supplemented by strategically-placed security cameras at each location, creating a suspenseful, completely unscripted first-hand account of each group’s stay. Over the course of the confinement, the subjects contend with increasingly pervasive feelings of fear and desolation, resulting in an experiment that represents a unique combination of psychology and the paranormal.

"Stranded" is executive-produced by Brad Kuhlman, Casey Brumels and Josh Gates (who also serves as showrunner) for Ping Pong Productions and Jason Blum for Blumhouse (the production company behind the Paranormal Activity feature film franchise and movies like Insidious and Sinister). Gerard Bocaccio, who heads up Blumhouse TV, will be a consultant on the project.

"NOTORIOUS HAUNTINGS" (Working Title) – Premieres Spring 2013
Produced by Pilgrim Studios – the company behind Syfy’s "Ghost Hunters," the most successful paranormal franchise on cable – "Notorious Hauntings" features a group of researchers who investigate reports of extreme and dangerous supernatural activity across the globe. In each of the six self-contained episodes, viewers will follow the investigators as they not only research the otherworldly activity at each site, but also explore the gruesome history of the infamous and heinous individuals, their crimes and victims, to determine if they are the cause of the present-day haunting. Through the gathering of evidence and the uncovering of little-known history, "Notorious Hauntings" will explore some of the world’s most enduring mysteries, including the case of Jack the Ripper in London and the legendary Dracula in Romania and Slovakia.

"Notorious Hauntings" is produced by Pilgrim Studios with Craig Piligian and Mike Nichols serving as Executive Producers.

Stay tuned for more as it comes.

Uncle Creepy's Blu Christmas Buyers Guide 2012!

0
0

It's that time of year again, kids. The holiday season is right around the corner, and we've compiled our yearly list of the best and worst Blu-rays of the year. Being that you can score a player for way less than 100 bucks now, there's little reason not to upgrade. Read on to find out where the smart money is!

There's no doubt Blu-ray players will once again be a pretty hot item this year, but what of the movies available for them? If you already own the DVD of your favorite flick, is there a need to replace it with a Blu-ray? I'm here to answer all of your questions in the fourth annual...

Uncle Creepy's Blu Christmas Buyers Guide 2012!

Before we get into our picks (most of which are also available in new DVD versions; see review for information), let's take a second to explain once again how we rated them. They're broken down into three categories:

Can't Miss -- Must Haves: These are the cream of the crop! The purchases that are guaranteed to bring a smile to someone's face. Items no one with the tech should be without.

Good Buys: A rock-solid purchase. Sure, there's nothing really to die for about these Blu-rays, but be confident in the fact that you're spending your cash on the goods that you're hoping for.

Serious Hi-Def Junkies Only: Here's where things get a bit sketchy. These Blu-rays were included for a few reasons -- Either the movies suck, the transfer and sound aren't up to snuff, or the included supplemental materials (or lack thereof) don't do much to keep these ships afloat.

Click on any of the reviews listed below to find out exactly what you're getting and to find the link with which to order them. I've also included at the very end a few other recommendations that either came in too late to be reviewed or are not quite horror films but we love 'em anyway.

Please Note: This article will continue to be updated throughout the holidays as more stuff comes out so check back often!

Let the games begin!

    0

Next Wednesday, December 5th, horror comedy Kill Me Now begins rolling out in theatres via the Tugg platform, and we have three pairs of tickets to give away for the Pasadena, CA, premiere, which will be attended by the film's writer/co-star Michael Swaim.

The screening begins at 7:30pm at Laemmle Playhouse 7. To enter for your chance to win a pair of tickets, just send us an E-MAIL HERE including your FULL NAME AND MAILING ADDRESS. We’ll take care of the rest and send the winners an email with info on how to get their tickets on Monday, December 3rd.

    Synopsis:
In the not-too-distant past, with the help of a windowless van and a jar of chloroform, a group of Internet sketch comedians were hauled off to the backwoods of Illinois to shoot their first movie! The horror comedy features Streamy and Webby Award winner Michael Swaim (“Agents of Cracked”) and the casts of “Those Aren’t Muskets!,” “Good Neighbor,” “Tremendosaur,” “Team Tiger Awesome,” and “Horsehead Businessman.” The film will be released exclusively through Tugg this December, with cast-hosted premieres to take place in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and San Diego.

Kill Me Now chronicles one unforgettable night in the lives of a ragtag group of small-town teens. It's a night that will prove equally unforgettable for the sinister Driller Killer (Brett Fancy – “EastEnders,” “Luther”), a deranged serial killer bent on ridding the world of vapidity and dumbassedness (everyone else). When he comes upon the kids' all-night graduation party--conveniently held at a cabin deep in the woods--he finds both in spades. Unfortunately, Mr. Killer is about to learn something crappy bumper stickers learned long ago: stupid people can be deadly in large numbers. Kill Me Now blends horror, comedy, depth and plain jackassery to form a brew so potent you won't know whether to laugh, scream, or think about, like, life and stuff. The movie features performances from a staggering array of the Internet's hottest up-and-coming comedians, writing from the guys behind “Those Aren't Muskets!” and Cracked.com, direction from a dude whose previous work includes hardcore, joint-smokin', Twista-havin', Kanye-featurin' rap videos, and at least one scene where a chick totally gets a drill to the brain. But it's funny!

Written by Michael Swaim and directed by Travis Long, Kill Me Now was filmed on location in Effingham, Illinois, and stars Michael Swaim, Brett Fancy, Kyle Mooney, Beck Bennett, Nick Rutherford, Jacob Reed, LisaMarie King, Brentan Schellenbach, Nick Mundy, Kaitlin Large, Dan Rubiano, Noah Byrne, Katy Stoll, Katie Willert and Daniel O'Brien.

A few days ago we posted a trailer for Metro: Last Light that introduced us to The Preacher, and now we're happy to bring you another character in the game - Meet The Model.

The apocalypse changed life for everyone in THQ’s Metro: Last Light. In underground Moscow what status does a beautiful, formerly wealthy model hold when people are struggling for survival? She may have escaped the bombs and entered the Metro just in time, but who could predict what depths humanity could sink to?

    Synopsis:
    It is the year 2034.

Beneath the ruins of post-apocalyptic Moscow, in the tunnels of the Metro, the remnants of mankind are besieged by deadly threats from outside – and within. Mutants stalk the catacombs beneath the desolate surface and hunt amidst the poisoned skies above. But rather than stand united, the station-cities of the Metro are locked in a struggle for the ultimate power, a doomsday device from the military vaults of D6. A civil war is stirring that could wipe humanity from the face of the earth forever.

As Artyom, burdened by guilt but driven by hope, you hold the key to our survival – the last light in our darkest hour...

Exclusive Zombex One-Sheet Premiere; Actor Lew Temple Talks!

It’s been awhile since we reported on writer/director Jesse Dayton’s zombie feature Zombex, but that all changes today with a first look at the new one-sheet for the flick as well as word from star Lew Temple on the production.

“I star in it along with Malcolm McDowell and Sid Haig,” said Temple, who currently can be seen on Season Three of AMC’s “The Walking Dead” as "Axel" (look for an extensive interview with the actor coming soon), of Zombex.

“It’s about a conspiracy in which the government is using New Orleans and Hurricane Katrina as a test zone for post-traumatic stress medicines,” continued the actor, whose previous genre turns include Trailer Park of Terror, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, and Rob Zombie’s The Devil’s Rejects and Halloween, among others.

“This is headed up by an evil pharmaceutical company (overseen by McDowell), in business with the government (which Haig represents). The drug goes rogue and causes people to change into, well, you guessed it. I play a Libertarian disc jockey by the name of 'Aldous Huxtable' who ousts the entire plan and then goes on a road trip with a musician (David Christopher) to find the serum. We team up with two hot military operators (Emily Kaye and Desiree McKinney). It’s 28 Days Later meets Zombieland, directed by my best friend Jesse. It also stars John Doe and Tom Araya and has some pretty good special effects. I am thinking it will be a good stir.”

    Synopsis:
Zombex tells the story of a post-Katrina New Orleans as it deals with a second disaster: a zombie apocalypse. Gone are the depression and post-traumatic stress of the hurricane thanks to the revolutionary new anti-depressant called "ZOMBEX," which is manufactured by a nefarious corporation. Are citizens of the Big Easy on the path to happiness, or is ZOMBEX working its dark magic? It is. Just as quickly as the city recovered, it plunges back into madness. Only this time, instead of deadly water filling the streets, NOLA is flooded with the walking dead.

No word on a release date at present although you can read our interview with Zombex filmmaker Dayton from last year here. For more check out the official Zombex Facebook page, dig on the official Zombex website, and follow Zombex on Twitter.

But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes--a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)--who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. CBS Slides Under the Dome with Stephen King

    0

For a while now there's been talk of Steven Spielberg and Stephen King joining forces to develop a TV series based on King's supernatural thriller Under the Dome for Showtime. However, the landscape has changed a bit.

Variety reports that CBS has given a straight-to-series 13-episode order to "Under the Dome," a drama series from Amblin Television and CBS TV Studios based on Stephen King's novel of the same name.

"Lost" alum Brian K. Vaughan has shepherded the TV adaptation of the series, which was initially developed by Steven Spielberg's TV division at CBS' sibling cabler, Showtime. CBS TV Studios-based hyphenate Neal Baer has been recruited to serve as showrunner and will exec produce with Vaughan, King, Amblin TV's Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank and DreamWorks' Stacey Snider.

Niels Arden Oplev, who helmed the original Swedish version of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, will direct the first segment. The show will tell the story of small New England town that is suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an enormous transparent dome. CBS intends to run the series next summer. And in an unusual step for them, the network plans to cut an SVOD deal that will make "Dome" episodes available for streaming shortly after the segments premiere on the network.

The SVOD component, coupled with what is expected to be robust international demand for the series, makes it affordable for CBS as summer programming as they're said to be paying a slightly lower license fee than it would for a typical drama. More soon.

    Book Synopsis:
Just down Route 119 in Chester’s Mill, Maine, all hell is about to break loose...

On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day, a small town is suddenly and inexplicably sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and rain down flaming wreckage. A gardener’s hand is severed as the dome descends. Cars explode on impact. Families are separated, and panic mounts. No one can fathom what the barrier is, where it came from, and when — or if — it will go away. Now a few intrepid citizens, led by an Iraq vet turned short-order cook, face down a ruthless politician dead set on seizing the reins of power under the dome. But their main adversary is the dome itself. Because time isn’t just running short. It’s running out.
