Supernatural Slashers #HoldYourBreath and Smiley Ready to Make a Killing on Home Video

If you missed The Asylum’s first theatrically released flick #HoldYourBreath and the cyber cafe Candyman that was Smiley during their very limited theatrical runs and haven’t gotten around to watching them on VOD you won’t have to wait too much longer to see them both.

The first Asylum production to receive a theatrical release proved to be a mixed bag to say the least but slasher movie fans that like their films with a healthy dose of over-the-top kills, gratuitous nudity, and a wacko finale will probably enjoy seeing Tucker & Dale vs. Evil’s Katrina Bowden and Randy Wayne of “The Lying Game” get terrorized by a body-jumping serial killer after they fail to adhere to an old wives’ tale that states you should hold your breath when passing by a cemetery lest you risk letting in a damned soul.

The Asylum is set to release Jared Cohn’s #HoldYourBreath (review) (possibly hash tag-less by the time it reaches home video) on both DVD and Blu-ray come January 22nd. No word of what, if any, extras will be included on the disc.

For those of you that listened to the new Dinner for Fiends and did not come away completely warned off of Michael J. Gallagher’s Smiley (review)Smiley you’ll get your chance to experience one of the worst horror movie endings in years soon enough. And then when anyone asks you why you watched it you can tell them “I did it for the lulz”.

This movie is about a girl called Ashley as she goes to her new college while getting over the death of her mother. She meets some new people there including Binder ('Shane Dawson' ) while at a party and she learns about an urban legend of an online killer that has the nickname "Smiley" who can only be seen on the web and he apparently kills people after they type in "It's all about the lulz" three times. Soon after going to the party Ashley and her flatmate Proxy go online to test it out, with horrific results. She becomes paranoid and she starts to think she sees Smiley all over the place and feels that he may be chasing her, but how can that be if he is not real? Have they somehow released him from the internet?

Caitlin Gerard, Melanie Papalia, Shane Dawson, and Roger Bart star in this fright flick Arc Entertainment will be setting loose on DVD February 12th. No artwork or disc specs have been released as of yet.

Take Your First Look at New Carrie, Prometheus, and Gremlins Action Figures From NECA

Our cohort Nomad just scooped up some bitchin' images of a few new figures from NECA that are bound to end up in your collection at some time or another. Read on for the skinny on new Carrie, Prometheus, and Gremlins collectibles.

Via Idle Hands:

NECA continue their domination of the horror plastics universe with two new action figures from the upcoming Carrie remake (releasing March 15, 2013) with Chloë Grace Moretz (Hit Girl) in the title role. The 7-inch figure duo make up a sort of before and after...one depicting the moment just before being crowned Prom Queen...and one right after, drenched in pig's blood and gearing up TO tear some students apart with her freaky mind powers. The latter is sure to be a sought after piece for horror fans...unless they are King/De Palma purists, in which case they can sit there with their frowny faces and leave the plastics for the rest of us. The pair are said to drop (individually) late January. That's late Feb/early March for those in the US.

Next up, we'll get a refresher look at the second wave of Prometheus action figures. We first saw these at San Diego Comic-Con, but the pre-orders are beginning to drop so the official images are now available...and honestly, do the ladies reading need an excuse for me to show more pics of Plastic Fassbender? I think not. Nothing changed from SDCC apart from the release order. We'll be getting David with his alternate helmeted head and Deacon, that lovable Alien baby, with a dissected Engineer head and Hammerpede accessories. Halloway has been bumped to a later series. We can also expect to see that David head (pulled off his body) with a Series 3 figure (my bet is on Shaw). These should drop around late February. Series 3 will include Vickers and Shaw.

Last up is the girl you've been dreaming about ever since Robert Picardo had a makeout session with her. It's Greta..that lovely Gremlin vixen from Gremlins 2. NECA would never be content to JUST give you wave after wave of Gremlins action figures...so here's a full-size Greta stunt puppet prop replica as a bonus! Gentlemen, start your credit card machines.

From the second Gremlins movie, this Greta stunt puppet prop replica is full-size and so lifelike you’ll swear you were at the Clamp Center! Cast directly from an original film-used stunt puppet! Hand painted! This prop replica is an absolute must-have for any Gremlins collector! Rubber & Latex Replica Gremlin stands nearly 30″ tall and includes a custom metal stand. Limited to 1,000 pieces WORLDWIDE.

The townspeople long suspected the Sawyer family, owners of a local barbeque pit, were somehow responsible. Their suspicions were finally confirmed one hot summer day when a young woman escaped the Sawyer house following the brutal murders of her four friends. Word around the small town quickly spread, and a vigilante mob of enraged locals surrounded the Sawyer stronghold, burning it to the ground and killing every last member of the family – or so they thought.

After embarking on a road trip with friends to uncover her roots, she finds she is the sole owner of a lavish, isolated Victorian mansion. Exclusive: Joe Hollow to Direct A Blood Story

$

Disciples director Joe Hollow tipped us off to his latest horror feature, A Blood Story, which is slated to go before cameras in January of 2013 in Florida. Read on for word!

Written, executive produced (with Debra Lamb) and to be directed by Hollow (with cinematography by Wolfgang Meyer), the filmmaker says of A Blood Story, “It’s a dark and twisted, blood-drenched love story of sorts that starts with three strangers who meet on their journey to find the truth of an age-old legend, the Fountain of Youth, but they uncover much more. The evil that follows is delved in the deepest of bloody historical secrets, (the Countess) Bathory!”

Appearing in A Blood Story are actors Camden Toy (Disciples), Tawny Amber Young (Nude Nuns with Big Guns), Mark Hanson (Sinners and Saints), Robert Z'Dar (Maniac Cop), Debra Lamb (Disciples), Wolfgang Meyer (The Family), Linnea Quigley (The Return of the Living Dead), Melanie Robel (Disciples) and Tim Hays (Legend of the Red Reaper). Michael J. Schaefer will co-executive produce.

Said Hollow refreshingly of his inspiration for A Blood Story, “I wanted to do something with a lower budget than my previous films. When I got started as a filmmaker, I bit off way too much, took on too many jobs, so on and so forth. So, for me as an artist, I failed my first time out, obviously finding success with my latest films in The Family and Disciples, but it all started with those earlier failures. Indie film allows you to do things you cannot do on bigger budget sets. So the artist in me wants to shoot a film where I can still have some ‘hands-on’ in areas you just can’t take on with a (bigger budget) film like Disciples or The Family.”

“So, after hours of talks with fellow executive producer Debra Lamb, we then set out to write a couple of scripts that we could shoot for $20,000 or less,” continued Hollow. “The script I was working on, A Blood Story, finished first. Designed smartly in so many areas, it allowed us to bring in the talent needed like Camden Toy and Robert Z'Dar. I just don’t want to go backwards visually, and that was the biggest challenge. So we were able to conquer all the ‘must have’ areas. The cinematography will be on the same level as Disciples, but with a different design and lighting style. Wolfgang and I have done a handful of projects together now, including The Family and Disciples, and he is a master of his craft and so much more!”

As for what Hollow feels will make A Blood Story stand out from the pack, “As a whole I feel the script itself is very strong,” he offered. “It’s hard to really discuss the unique elements without giving away too much (of the story), but I believe the film has elements we have yet to see combined with a very original approach. The storyline is deep and unique. In the end the film will offer everything you look for in a horror film, but it should stand alone as far as originality and creativity. I hope the film can inspire others to take a chance with storylines. It’s a risky business, but independent film allows us to take some chances. Deep story and unique elements are almost a thing of the past with horror films, and I don’t believe you need a ton of cash to tell a good story. You need cash to raise the bar, yes, for bigger production design and talent, but you can still make a fantastic indie film for a low budget. A Blood Story I truly believe will be a good example of that.”

Stay tuned for more, and in the interim keep up-to-date with the project at the official A Blood Story website!

Exclusive: Lew Temple Talks The Walking Dead, Upcoming Projects, and More! With great pleasure we sat down recently with actor Lew Temple, who’s currently essaying the role of Axel on AMC’s "The Walking Dead," and what followed was a fascinating conversation with a true Southern gentleman.

Familiar to genre fans for his turns in a slew of horror projects (Trailer Park of Terror, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, and Rob Zombie’s The Devil’s Rejects and Halloween redux, just to name a few), the prolific Temple has displayed his chops in dozens of non-genre films and series as well, including this year’s big-budget feature films Lawless and Unstoppable and the upcoming Gore Verbinski-directed flick The Lone Ranger (see exclusive stills of him in the latter below along with him in character as Axel).

Now the forty-five-year-old Louisiana native brings his talents back to the realm of horror with his third season addition to the hit series “The Walking Dead.”

“It is always so nice to visit with you and the fans of Dread Central,” said Temple, who had just wrapped an episode of “Hawaii Five-O” at the time of the interview. “Y'all are so well-versed and informed, and I so appreciate and am impressed with the knowledge of your readers as it relates to the (horror) genre, and I am so enthused and blessed to be on an amazing show like 'The Walking Dead.' It has really been a wonderful opportunity to be part of such a wonderful cast and production, and to build a character like Axel is a joy, a challenge, and a mysterious ride.”

Discussing his character on “The Walking Dead” (a convict who yearns to join Rick Grimes and his posse of survivors), “Fans of the graphic novel know and have been waiting (for him) to arrive on the television series,” said Temple. “He is a prisoner who has been locked in the commissary of the prison when the apocalyptic riot broke out and was protected in this space with provisions, along with four other prisoners from the penitentiary. None of them have any awareness of what has become of the world when the survivors stumble upon them.”

“Axel is a gregarious Southern redneck-biker type, who has big heart no doubt,” continued Temple. “He has a sense of compassion for his fellow man, but he is not as meek as he might appear, and though he has had to survive with four other hardened criminals, sans Oscar (actor Vincent M. Ward), this brave new world is something entirely different for him. He wants to associate and assimilate into the group of survivors, to the point of trying too hard to be accepted. He has a wry sense of humor and ironic quick wit. He will make you laugh and cry in the same offering. He is, in short, a good friend, but there is something simmering underneath, something more than meets the eye.”

With the narrative of the third season of “The Walking Dead” television series departing from the source material, I asked Temple how the unpredictability of such impacts his performance.

“I like the symbiotic relationship that the television series and the comic have developed,” he replied.“For me they are now proven entities that tend to inform each other. I am thankful to have a blueprint like the comic book to build a character like Axel (from). I am also thankful that the production has the leniency and latitude to allow an actor to bring something to the character that may not necessarily be on the page of the graphic novel. This is the ‘simpatico’ that I speak of, and I feel it is a key ingredient to the show’s success. In most cases the show’s comic book characters have been brought to life by the actors to the fan's delight, rather than (to their) disappointment. I think this speaks to the sophistication of fans of 'The Walking Dead,' who are looking for a diverse take on the characters. This then allows an actor to make in-the-moment choices which his character has never been given the opportunity to explore on the page of the comic. It dismisses all predictability and gets ‘real right now’. Again I think this is the visceral essence of the show. It is exhilarating to be able to not know what is going to happen and to not have any anticipation or expectation when you go to work. It’s a gift, and that is what working on 'The Walking Dead' is, a ‘gift’.”

“As I am becoming more and more a part of the team, I understand what they have done to endear themselves to an audience,” Temple offered. “It is a simple formula: hard work. I have never been part of a production that works harder, at all levels: producers, writer, actors, crew, post, you name it. They bring their ‘A’ game every day, every week, and every month. The bar is set high. I was so taken back, and impressed, when I showed up for my first week of work. I have a level of excellence based on the type of work that I have had the opportunity to do, and this meets that without a doubt. That is rare. When there is a question, the time is taken to answer it. When there is a problem, things are halted to fix it, right then and there. It gives an actor confidence to soar with that type of support. The fans have given them that type of support: to soar, to fall, or to fly. No wonder the show does so well, as they do things right. I think this is why the show is so popular as well. Good work is recognized and appreciated.”

With the universe of “The Walking Dead” having expanded into webisodes, the most recent being the Greg Nicotero-directed four-segment “Cold Storage” series starring actress Cerina Vincent (with whom Temple acted recently in the feature film MoniKa), we asked Temple if there were any rumblings regarding folding surviving characters from the web series into “The Walking Dead” proper.

“Greg Nicotero has built these webisodes, and they are fantastic,” enthused Temple of the series (which you can watch here). “I am so thrilled that they have a home, and they are so well done. Greg is not only an executive producer on the show but is also directing episodes, and as you can see, he is very talented. Clearly he has a voice that is to be heard not only on our show, but in the genre. And of course he has been around with an already incredible special effects career. So these webisodes have become their own little private Idaho, and I think that they just complement the entire franchise. I am very impressed with the integrity that Greg and his productions have maintained in the spirit of the show and graphic novel, and I adore Cerina (Vincent). I am a big fan and would love to see her added to the mix, helping Axel defend against some walkers, if you follow me. I think she has the chops to take care of herself in that venue and would be a welcome addition. She is a fine actress, and (genre) fans are going to be so excited to see her work in MoniKa. It is very multi-dimensional and compelling. She is a wonderful talent. Who wouldn't want to hang out at the campfire with her, you follow me?”

On the mainstream public’s enthusiastic embrace of the genre series, Temple had this to say: “I want to take a moment and address what I think is a big part of the popularity of the show. It is very ‘here and now’, and less a genre-based experience, I feel,” mused the actor. “In other words, it is not a show about zombies or the apocalypse; it is about what is happening in our world right now: civil unrest, distrust of our governments, moral issues, what is ‘right’ and what is ‘wrong’ and the line between, which has become grey in the name of survival. At the end of the day, most of our world is just trying to survive. Bring home a paycheck to sustain our families. Zombies are our bankers, our politicians, our mortgages and our one percenters. Zombies are also just a metaphor for cancer; everyone knows somebody who is experiencing the fight to survive that disease or another one as bad. This is why the show resonates in my opinion. It is ultimately about what we face in our every day lives, couched in extreme circumstance every Sunday night. Everyone can put themselves in the shoes of the players on the show and feel that desperation and exhaustion from the fight to survive. Life is a four-letter word.”

As for what’s next on the actor's plate, Temple said, “We wrap Season Three of 'The Walking Dead' soon, and then the holidays are upon us. I was able to slip in an episode of 'Hawaii Five-O,' too, which will air around Christmas. Nice work, Hawaii. Mahalo! I am then going to do an independent film called A Fighting Season, directed by Oden Roberts, starring Clayne Crawford and Azura Skye, which shoots in mid to late December. It’s a military film, in the vein of The Hurt Locker. It is a role I have never done before, and I am very excited to take that project on. I’m also doing another independent feature called Home, directed by Frank Lim, with Heather Langencamp. It’s a psychological thriller, very Sixth Sense.”

“The beginning of next year I am attached to a film titled Wicked Blood, which is directed by Mark Young,” he concluded. “This is a great project, and it could be my Winter's Bone piece. I’ll be working with James Frain and Norman Reedus (of 'The Walking Dead') on that one. And of course, I was on The Lone Ranger, starring Johnny Depp as Tonto. It was just a remarkable experience. It changed my life to be three months on a horse in that landscape. Afterwards I never thought I was going to do anything other than Westerns, and now here I am right in the middle of a zombie apocalypse.”

Go All-In for the Most Deadly Poker Night EverThe horror genre is on a never-ending quest to fill every holiday, every area, and yes, every activity with as much macabre mayhem as possible; and that's one of the reasons why we love it so. That being said, get ready for the first details on Poker Night.

Variety reports that Beau Mirchoff, Ron Perlman, Delroy Lindo, and Ron Eldard have all been dealt in for indie thriller Poker Night from Wingman Productions. Filming is under way in Victoria, British Columbia.

Mirchoff plays a newly-promoted detective who learns from a Greek chorus of wiser, older detectives gathered for their ritual night of poker when a killer pulls the young cop and his mentors into a web of mutual deceit.

A new trailer has made its way online in support of the surprisingly clever looking horror comedy Warm Bodies, and as always you can find it right here next to the autopsy table and six-gallon tub of formaldehyde. Dig it!

Starring Nicholas Hoult, Rob Corddry, Teresa Palmer, and John Malkovich, the film follows an existentially tormented zombie named "R" who begins an unlikely friendship with the girlfriend of one of his victims. It starts a chain reaction that will transform him, his fellow zombies, and maybe the whole undead world.

Check out Warm Bodies in theatres on February 1, 2013.

Synopsis
Zombies love people, especially their brains. But R (Nicholas Hoult) is different. He’s alive inside, unlike the hundreds of other grunting, drooling undead — all victims of a recent plague that drove the remaining survivors into a heavily guarded city. Now the Zombies roam about an airport terminal, searching for human prey and living in fear of the vicious Boneys, the next undead incarnation.

One day, R and his best friend M lumber toward the city in search of food. There, R first sets his eyes on JULIE (Teresa Palmer), a beautiful human. Determined to save her—first from the other Zombies and then from the Boneys—R hides her in his home, a cluttered 747 aircraft. Julie is terrified, and R’s grunted assurances of “Not…eat” do little to calm her. But when R begins to act more human than Zombie, coming to her defense, refusing to eat human flesh, and even speaking in full sentences, Julie realizes that R is special.

After a few close calls with the Boneys, and with her father mounting an armed search for her, Julie realizes she can’t hide forever. So she sneaks back home, leaving R broken-hearted. Desperate to see her, R decides to comb his hair, stand a little straighter, and impersonate a human long enough to get past the city guards. If only he can prove to the humans that Zombies can change, maybe R and Julie’s love might stand a chance. But with the rampaging Boneys heading toward the city and Julie’s father intent on killing R and his Zombie friends, the stage is set for an all-out battle between the living and the undead.

A genre-bending tale of love and transformation, WARM BODIES is a story about a boy who loves a girl…for more than just her body.

NBC Announces Premiere Date for Do No Harm and Return Date for GrimmOne midseason replacement TV show we've been keeping an eye on, "Do No Harm," finally has a premiere date, and when making the announcement, NBC also included news on when "Grimm" will be returning in 2013.

From the Press Release:
NBC will premiere the new drama “Do No Harm” on Thursday, January 31, 2013 (10-11 p.m. ET), following the hour-long series finale of the Emmy Award-winning “30 Rock” (8-9 p.m. ET) earlier that same night.

The announcements were made today by Robert Greenblatt, Chairman, NBC Entertainment.

“January 31 will be a special night as one classic series will mark its finale with a great hour-long sendoff episode while a promising new drama will make its debut on Thursdays,” said Greenblatt. “‘30 Rock’ is acclaimed as a legendary comedy, and we will see a truly memorable and fitting last episode. In ‘Do No Harm,’ viewers will have a unique new dramatic storyline with an exciting new star in Steven Pasquale that takes them into dark and uncharted territory.”

“Grimm” will return to the schedule on Friday, March 8 (9-10 p.m. ET).

NBC's Do No Harm

In “Do No Harm,” Dr. Jason Cole (Steven Pasquale, "Rescue Me") is a highly respected neurosurgeon who has it all – a lucrative career, confident charm, the gift of compassion. But he also has a deep, dark secret. One morning when he wakes up disoriented in a wrecked hotel room amidst several near-naked women he's never seen before, he knows one thing: It's happening again. Every night at the same hour, something inside Jason changes, leaving him almost unrecognizable – seductive, devious, borderline sociopathic.

This new man is his dangerous alternate personality who goes by the name of “Ian Price.” For years he's battled Ian, keeping him in check with a powerful experimental sedative. But now his – their – body has developed a resistance to the serum, setting Ian free once again. And to make matters worse, after being suppressed for so long, Ian's hell-bent on taking revenge on his oppressor. With everyone Jason cares about at risk – patients, friends, co-workers and even the woman he loves – he's got to stop Ian once and for all. Will they find some common ground, or will they bring each other down? Hell hath no fury like an alter ego scorned.

Also starring are Alana De La Garza ("Law & Order"), Michael Esper (A Beautiful Mind), Ruta Gedmintas ("The Borgias"), and Phylicia Rashad ("The Cosby Show"). "Do No Harm" is produced by Universal Television and Traugott Company. The executive producer/writer is David Schulner ("Desperate Housewives,""The Event"). Peter Traugott ("Ringer") and Rachel Kaplan ("Ringer") also are executive producers. Michael Mayer (NBC's "Smash") is the co-executive producer and director.
