From the Press Release
Developed by Ubisoft Montpellier, the studio behind critically acclaimed titles like From Dust, Beyond Good & Evil and, Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, ZombiU puts players in the middle of London circa 2012, where an outbreak has infected the population, destroying their humanity and turning them into mindless monsters preying on the flesh of the few remaining survivors. This fear-fueled first-person shooter invites takes all the horror, chaos and tension found in the best of the horror genre and adds original interactive elements, including a unique death mechanic that puts players in the body of a different survivor each time they die, allowing them to track and take down their old, infected characters, recover their equipment and see if they can stay alive just a little bit longer this time.

Exclusive Chat with The Collection Co-Stars Josh Stewart and Emma Fitzpatrick

Today Marcus Dunstan's latest directorial offering, The Collection, hits select theaters nationwide, and in anticipation of the sequel's release, Dread Central recently caught up with the flick's co-stars Josh Stewart and Emma Fitzpatrick.

During our interview with the pair at the press day for The Collection, we heard more from Stewart on reprising his role as the unlucky career criminal who tangled with The Collector the first time around, Fitzpatrick discussed what she loved most about her character, Elena, and the duo chatted about handling the physicality of the grueling shoot and much more.

Read on for more from the stars of The Collection, and make sure to check out the flick now that it's been unleashed on the big screen courtesy of LD Entertainment.

Dread Central: Josh, was it always a given after the first film that you'd be back for a Collector sequel?

Exclusive Chat with The Collection Co-Stars Josh Stewart and Emma Fitzpatrick

Josh Stewart: You know… no. Look, in this business there are no guarantees. On the first movie we had gotten caught up in some Weinstein stuff with the distribution so it was up in the air as to what was going to happen. Then these guys (Marcus and Patrick) were like, "Hey, can we buy the movie from you guys if we find someone who will buy it?" and then Mickey Liddell bought it.

It then got bought and released really quickly here in the US so it had a very quick life in theaters; it caught on a lot more overseas, which was great, and then when The Collector came out on DVD, the movie got even more momentum. So there really were no guarantees and no talk about a sequel at all in the beginning. It was just doing a movie, and it is what it is.

Then it was, "Hey, we're doing another one, and we want to bring your character back," so I was like, "All right, let's do it!"

Dread Central: And what was it about the character of Elena that appealed to you, Emma?

Emma Fitzpatrick: You probably saw last night [at the screening] that she becomes a badass by the end of the movie so I think just the chance to do a genre movie that had great characters to it. I wasn't familiar with this world before The Collection either so for me it was really about seeing Elena actually develop throughout the story and a young woman getting to discover her own strengths. She's just a cool chick; she's crafty, tenacious, and you don't get to play that a lot.

Those kind of movies really freak me out so I wouldn't say that I really know that much about the genre; I just knew that this was a really well-crafted story and a really well-crafted character.

Dread Central: How did you prepare for the physicality of these roles?

Josh Stewart: I did a lot of physical training for this one; I used to be a boxer so that stuff comes easy for me. Getting punched in the face is very easy for me to do (laughs). But we rehearsed the choreography for the fights a couple of days before and then the day of, too. It wasn't something that we rehearsed well in advance or anything. I did train for a while before shooting just because when you're making a movie like this, you have to keep your body at a constant state of tension to actually look like you're in a constant state of tension.

So keeping your body in a constant state of tension for 12 hours a day is exhausting enough. I mean, your body knots up and everything just hurts and aches. Then you throw in all the physical stuff on top of that, and it all just accumulates day by day by day. It never fails- once you start getting punched, once you get tired or after you've done the same thing 40 times in a row, it's all going to catch up with you eventually.

Emma Fitzpatrick: It's funny; when I first got the role, everyone kept asking me, "Oh, are you going to be screaming the whole time?" and I don't think I scream once in this. It's just not that kind of movie. So just to have that kind of quiet strength, that kind of resolve was really cool. Plus, you have to have someone who can match wits with The Collector to play on his level so there had to be some intelligence to Elena.

Exclusive Chat with The Collection Co-Stars Josh Stewart and Emma Fitzpatrick

Josh Stewart: And with Arkin there's sort of this arc of where he's been and where I'd like to see him go even. Let's not forget that Arkin is a bad guy; he's a criminal. We've already been talking that if there is a third, we want to see more of that criminal element of him. Arkin has at this point the creative license, with the audience as well, to really become a truly bad badass and go back into that beast mentality. You know, considering all that has happened to Arkin in these movies, we should definitely see that caged animal come out of him and maybe even go back to what locked him up to begin with.

I mean, how did Arkin survive in prison for 10 years? I'm not the biggest of dudes so he's got to be a little bit crazy. He's got to be a little unbalanced.

Dread Central: Emma, can you discuss your thoughts on Elena's transformation in The Collection from damsel in distress to ultimately the hero that saves the day at the end?

Emma Fitzpatrick: [SPOILER ALERT]Marcus spoke to me about this before shooting, how he wanted to make those parallels between the characters in The Collection. The moment where I get captured and Arkin gets away at the beginning- her sense is that she's been abandoned and this guy had a chance to save me but he didn't. So there's this great turnaround in the end where I'm standing at the door and about to get outside where it's safe. Plus, it's really hard to get to Arkin so maybe I should just peace out and call it even, but I don't.

There was so much attention given to that moment, pushing into my face and seeing Elena having to make this decision, that you can't help but care about these people and the relationship they've built throughout this traumatic situation.

The Collection (review here) is directed by Marcus Dunstan; written by Dunstan and Patrick Melton; and stars Josh Stewart, Lee Tergesen, Christopher McDonald, Johnny Yong Bosch, Emma Fitzpatrick, Shannon Kane, Tim Griffin, William Peltz, Eaddy Mays, Michael Nardelli, Justin Mortelliti, Michael H. Cole, Arloa Reston, and Courtney Lauren Cumming.

Synopsis
When Elena’s (Emma Fitzpatrick) friends take her to a secret party at an undisclosed location, she never imagined she would become the latest victim of The Collector, a psychopathic killer. The Collector kidnaps and transports her to an abandoned hotel he’s transformed into his own private maze of torture and death. Upon learning of his daughter’s disappearance, Elena’s wealthy father (Christopher McDonald) hires a group of mercenaries to retrieve her from the vicious grips of The Collector. These mercenaries coerce Arkin (Josh Stewart), the only man to have escaped the wrath of this heinous monster, to lead them through the gruesome labyrinth. Now Arkin finds himself fighting for his own life in order to save Elena.

Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning Press Conference with Dolph Lundgren and director John Hyams

Today the next chapter in the ongoing Universal Soldier saga is set to be released in selected theaters; more horror than sci-fi, John Hyams'Day of Reckoning reunites Dolph Lundgren and Jean-Claude Van Damme for one more battle to the death.

But this time up-and-coming action star Scott Adkins is getting in on the action.

Dread Central recently attended the press day for Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning (review), where we caught up with Lundgren and director Hyams to hear more about this installment in the ever-growing franchise, their experiences making the film and much more.

Lundgren also briefly chatted about the upcoming Expendables 3 and potentially co-starring in that flick alongside Nicolas Cage.

Check out the highlights from the Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning press conference below, and look for the flick now that's arrived in theaters everywhere!

Question: So, John, what was the hardest part of shooting this Universal Soldier for you?

John Hyams:It’s not a huge budget movie so you’re on a tight schedule. On this movie we had a 30-day shooting schedule; we also shot it in 3D, which adds a lot of challenges technically speaking as there’s a whole lot more equipment and variables where things can suddenly go wrong. I think the biggest challenge was that we had to be extremely prepared; in doing fight scenes of such complexity, you can’t just work it out on the set. You need it to be prepared early and have the performers in the gym learning these moves.

The best thing about this movie is that we had a cast and a crew that was willing to put work in before we showed up on the set.

Question: Dolph, this is the third Universal Soldier movie for you; can you discuss the appeal of this franchise and your character of Andrew Scott?

Dolph Lundgren: Well look, they had to drag me out for the third one (Universal Soldier: Regeneration), and for this one I wasn’t too happy doing it because it just felt like I was repeating the same thing again. But then John came up with the very clever idea of making this one more of a horror movie, and it was more mysterious and smarter. It was just a different type of movie and more evolved so my character became more interesting to me because he had more compassion for his fellow soldiers and he’s more human than he was before.

Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning Press Conference with Dolph Lundgren and director John Hyams

Question: John, how did you arrive at the color palette for this movie?

John Hyams: That’s a good question. The last movie we did was kind of monochromatic with very washed out colors, and it was shot in Eastern Europe during the winter so that informed that. With this one we wanted a landscape that was actually very colorful but not in necessarily a beautiful way, but more of in a sublime, haunting kind of way. Different colors would dominate different settings because the whole movie is about a character taking a descent into his own soul, and through this descent the movie keeps going deeper and deeper to where it’s underground by the end. We’re trying to create this very underbelly world that our character who seemed like a nice normal guy is taken on a descent to hell, so that informed the look.

Question: Given the construct of this story and what we see onscreen, is this film kind of like passing the mantle of the franchise on to Scott Adkins then?

John Hyams: It was less a passing of a mantle in my mind and more about introducing this new character and a new flavor to the franchise. As Dolph said, when the discussion was to do another movie, my answer to that was, “What for?” It’ll satisfy some paychecks in the process, but what really is the point of the movie existing if we’re doing it the same way?

So I thought, let’s bring something new to this, and the last movie posed this riddle of what happened to Jean-Claude’s character of Luc Deveraux. By that very nature he couldn’t really be the protagonist of this movie, and it should be about finding him and Andrew Scott and for these guys to find where they are and what they’re doing. We need a vessel for that and so we brought in a guy like Scott Adkins, who to me has more than earned his right to lead something like this, and he is in the perfect place because many people don’t know about him. It is a great way to introduce him and show what he is capable of doing.

Dolph Lundgren: I agree (laughs).

Question: Towards the end of the movie there are certain scenes that were clearly inspired by Apocalypse Now. Did that movie inspire this one overall, and were there other movies which influenced the style of it for you, too?

John Hyams: There are a lot of movies that inspired it for sure. Apocalypse Now is probably my favorite movie ever made, but I didn’t go into this saying let’s do Apocalypse Now. It was more thematically about these characters going into this descent. Apocalypse Now has taken over Heart of Darkness as far as our iconic reference for that story of going down the river and visiting the darkness of your soul.

Kurtz is more of a mythic literary character at this point. So Deveraux has kind of gone rogue and created his own militia, and there’s no denying he’s become a Kurtz-like character. We didn’t avoid that but just embraced that and accepted that this is who he’s become. Thematically it has a lot to do with that, but stylistically we were not doing what Francis Ford Coppola did with all due respect.

Our visual influences were a little more in the noir type of world. We watched movies like Jacob’s Ladder, Angel Heart and even Memento, but even the visual palette of Cronenberg movies had this sticky murky darkness to the world we were trying to create that we were more inspired by horror and noir than by action. Also movies like Blade Runner and filmmakers like Gasper Noe, who’s made some amazing movies that deal with subjective storytelling like Enter the Void, which is one of the great cinematic achievements in history in my mind. So those were some overt thefts really, and Apocalypse Now was more of a thematic direction we were going.

Question: Dolph, you went from shooting this Universal Soldier to doing The Expendables 2 in a very short period of time. What is like for you going from one action movie to another so quickly?

Dolph Lundgren: My characters in each film were different kinds of guys. It was fun because the Scott character was more introverted while Gunner Jensen is more of a Swedish kind of drunk. While Expendables 2 had me giving a comedic performance, this one is more dramatic, but I try to bring some comedy to this one as well.

Even in the first Universal Soldier movie, Scott had some comedic moments without playing broad comedy, and I just try to find those little beats where the audience can get a relief from all the mayhem, murder and brains everywhere. That’s what I thought I could bring to it, a little bit of a light touch.

John Hyams: Dolph’s character of Scott is the one who roots us in the Universal Soldier world because this film clearly goes off the reservation. Even in the last one, he kind of brings you back to what it’s all about. The first movie was very tongue-in-cheek and there was a lot of comedy in it, and these last two have gotten more serious.

But then again, you inject this character who's the mouthpiece for all these guys. He’s the guy who’s able to vocalize their existential plight, and in doing so Dolph’s able to bring his kind of spirit and personality and humor to the table. It’s a great release for the audience because they have been taken to a dark place.

Question: Sylvester Stallone just announced he’s doing The Expendables 3 and that Nic Cage will be in it. Dolph, will you be back for that sequel, and what do you think Cage will bring to the movie?

Dolph Lundgren: Well, I don’t know if I’m back or not because I haven’t seen a script yet. But Cage is a great actor and he will balance the cast out; he could play some verbally-driven character and sort of balance all the guys who just run around grunting and killing people like me (laughs).

Question: With these last two Universal Soldier movies having been shot in Eastern Europe and Louisiana, where would you like to see the franchise go next?

John Hyams: Like many franchises you can go in so many different directions with this thing. It really comes down to what the audience wants and after them the rights holders. If they want to continue in the direction we’ve been going, then I’m their guy; but if they want to do something else, then they can find someone else and do it differently.

I have some pretty good ideas about where I’d go with it, which is again taking where this movie ends and the questions that it poses and where would that lead you. That’s the point of doing movies which are in chapters because the end of every movie is posing a question, and the next one should be answering that and then posing new ones at the end of that.

This February, 2013, BOOM! Studios will relaunch the Hellraiser comics franchise with Hellraiser: The Dark Watch, an all-new ongoing monthly series co-written by creator Clive Barker and Brandon Seifert and illustrated by newcomer Tom Garcia.

    From the Press Release:
As promised, Clive Barker did not only return to the Hellraiser universe, he re-imagined it! Nothing is as simple as it seems – the old ways have been destroyed, and a dangerous new world lies in its wake. Where are Elliott Spencer and Kirsty Cotton? Who will rule and who will serve? Rising star Brandon Seifert (Witch Doctor, Hellraiser: The Road Below) joins forces with the legendary Clive Barker, with art by Tom Garcia (Hellraiser), to begin this amazing new chapter in the history of one of horror’s greatest franchises.

"I grew up with Hellraiser and Clive's novels so it's a huge, surreal honor to be collaborating with him on The Dark Watch. Under Clive's direction, the Hellraiser ongoing series has gone in some radically different directions over the last two years. I'm really excited for what's next — and even more excited that I get to be involved!" said Seifert.

Hellraiser: The Dark Watch #1 ships in February with main covers by Tim Bradstreet (28 Days Later, Star Trek) and Nick Percival (Hellraiser, 2000 AD) as well as incentive covers by Frazer Irving (Higher Earth, Batman Incorporated) and Bradstreet. The first issue is a 32-page, full-color issue that retails for $3.99.

That's right, folks! It's undoubtedly one of the year's best Blu-ray releases, and to celebrate, you now have the chance to win a brilliant Christmas present courtesy of Arrow Video -- we have two LIMITED EDITION STEELBOOK versions of Zombie Flesh Eaters to give away!

To be in with a chance of winning one of these fantastic prizes, simply send us an E-MAIL HERE including YOUR FULL NAME AND POSTAL ADDRESS. We'll take care of the rest.

Please note that this competition is open only to UK readers.

    From the Press Release:

Hailing from the now infamous “Video Nasty” era of horror films, Zombie Flesh Eaters became an unstoppable cult hit upon its release in 1979. The film divided opinion across the globe and came up against opposition in many territories for the sheer amount of bloody content and its high gore-factor.

The original cut of Zombie Flesh Eaters was banned in the UK upon release, and the film that appeared in cinemas was an edited version with a full 2 minutes of brutality stripped out to get past the classification board. These new high definition restored editions contain the full unedited film, as Fulci made them to be seen.

From the sleazy video nasty vaults comes a movie so stained with controversy and moral indignation that the very mention of its name sends shudders down the spines of the weak stomached and censorious – Zombie Flesh Eaters. A gut-munching, shark wrestling, eye-gouging orgy of topless skin divers, mud-caked undead terror and Italian splatter from the dark imagination of horror genius Lucio Fulci (The Beyond, City of The Living Dead).

An abandoned boat in New York Harbour unleashes a deadly flesh crazed Zombie cargo... A Young American woman and a journalist investigate a tropical island where a deadly disease is making the dead walk... Soon, thoughts of getting to the bottom of the murderous curse will be forgotten, as Fulci’s walking corpses overwhelm the living and reports come in that the Big Apple is swarming with the living dead...

Still, after more than thirty years, Zombie Flesh Eaters still has the power to shock and offend the unwilling... Check out this classic ‘sadist video’ and revel in a wonderfully offensive movie that once helped usher in a moral panic!

    Special Features:

    • A brand new high definition restoration of the original negative with optional English and Italian opening titles
    • Optional English SDH subtitles for English audio / a new English subtitles translation for Italian audio
    • Optional original, restored Italian and English Mono 2.0 audio
    • Audio commentary with screenwriter Elisa Briganti, moderated by Calum Waddell

THE MEAT MUNCHING MOVIES OF GINO DE ROSSI– The special effects magician behind many Italian splatter classics talks about his most famous gore-drenched greats - and shows props from many plasma-packed masterworks - including ZOMBIE FLESH EATERS, CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD, THE HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY, CANNIBAL FEROX, BURIAL GROUND and PIRANHA II.

Zombie Flesh Eaters Star Ian McCulloch Talks Meeting Fulci, the Public's Reaction to the Film, and More

Zombie Flesh Eaters Star Ian McCulloch Talks Meeting Fulci, the Public's Reaction to the Film, and MoreWith the release of Arrow Video's phenomenal Blu-ray treatment of Lucio Fulci's classic Zombie Flesh Eaters upon us, we chatted with the film's star, Ian McCulloch, about his experiences in the world of Italian horror.

It’s hard to believe Lucio Fulci’s now widely celebrated undead nightmare was once rotting in ‘video nasty’ limbo. Most of you reading this right now probably saw Zombie Flesh Eaters years ago in appallingly muddy VHS quality – as if you didn’t already feel dirty enough for deciding to watch the infamous Italian stomach-churner!

Now, thanks to the excellent folks at Arrow Video, you can see it in an eye-popping Blu-ray presentation with some meaty extras to chew through. That’s right; you can watch a zombie fight a shark in glorious high definition!

To celebrate this historical release, we had the good fortune to sit down with one of the stars of Zombie Flesh Eaters, Ian McCulloch, who played plucky reporter Peter West. Despite finding the footage to be uncomfortable to watch, he would later go on to star in spaghetti horrors Zombie Holocaust and Contamination. So just how was it working alongside a genre legend in one of horror cinema’s most infamous films?

Can you recall the moment you landed the role and first met with Lucio Fulci? How was it?

Ian McCulloch: I was offered the role of Peter West on April Fool's Day. I was rehearsing a play in Plymouth when my agent phoned me with the offer. Having agreed to take it, the film company arranged to fly me to London to meet Fulci for dinner. He was accompanied by the casting director, and the meeting went as well as it could, bearing in mind my total lack of Italian and Fulci's not so brilliant English. He was, I thought, rather boastful but not about his film career - more his prowess as a man of the world who directed films but also sailed the Atlantic and bred horses.

Did you stay in contact with Fulci after the film’s release?

Ian McCulloch: I did not meet Lucio again after I finished the film.

What were your initial feelings about the project?

Ian McCulloch: I thought I was going to make a 'Hammer Horror' type of film. I had no idea how Italians did things, and while I was aware that they did not hold back when they did sex type scenes, I had no premonition of how they were going to shoot the other special effects. However, the offer of a leading role and the locations in New York, the Dominican Republic and Italy, plus a generous financial deal, made me only too willing to accept the offer, especially as there would be no audition or test.

How was it working on set? Was there a scene in particular that was hard to shoot?

Ian McCulloch: I was impressed by the work ethic of the crew and the speed at which they worked. Most of them had worked with Fulci before and were used to his antics and style. An English unit would have taken twice as long. Breaks were few and short. They were also making another film at the same time. In the hotel and on various planes we travelled in. They went out of their way to be friendly and helpful, and there were no problematic scenes.

How does it feel now that the film has gone from a 'video nasty' to getting such a polished Blu-ray presentation?

Ian McCulloch: I was astonished that there was enough interest to make the 25th Anniversary DVD and more astonished that there was a huge audience attending conventions in the States who loved the film. The same proved true in the UK and Germany but surprisingly not in Italy, the country of its origin. I saw the Blu-ray, and they have done a tremendous job on it.

Can you remember the public reaction when the film was first released?

Ian McCulloch: I hoped, I suppose, for a bigger and better reaction. It did not set the world alight, and my wife walked out after five minutes. It took its classification as a video nasty to increase its popularity.

Why do you think the film still has such a strong following today?

Ian McCulloch: I have no idea except that it was the first of its kind and probably one of the goriest. Romero set the tone for one type of zombie film, and Fulci set the tone for the other. I am constantly surprised by its following, which now includes almost three generations of film fans.

What did you think when you saw the finished film? Is it true that the film shocked you? Which scene in particular?

Ian McCulloch: I saw the film for the first time when I did the commentary for the 25th Anniversary version with Jason Slater. I was, however, in another room, answering Jason's questions and looking away to tell anecdotes as I remembered them from the screen so I did not see all of the film. I saw enough, however, to make me wince and feel that I had made the right decision in not seeing it before. I saw it for the first time properly at the Burns Centre in Dumfries where I was doing a Q&A and realised that I would have to see it to answer the questions.

Do many films shock you these days, or do you tend to stay away from horror?

Ian McCulloch: Horror films are not my cup of tea although I see from my CV that I have done more of them than any other!

Many thanks to Ian for taking the time out to chat with us! If you're a fan of the film (and if not, what the heck are you doing here?), be sure to enter our UK Zombie Flesh Eaters giveaway.

Latin American Zombies on their Way in The Summer Hit

    $

Box Office: Not Too Many Moviegoers Adding to The CollectionEveryone all over the world has had problems with the pesky undead, and now there's news of even more flesh-eaters shambling in all the way from South America. Break out the skinchips and salsa! It's time for The Summer Hit!

Uruguay’s Pablo Stoll, a darling of the art-pic crowd since 2001′s Rotterdam Tiger-winning 25 Watts, is prepping a zombie movie, The Summer Hit, Variety reports. The move will shock some Stoll loyalists, which is exactly what he wants.

Set at a Uruguay beach resort, the film turns on Santi, who meets the girl of his dreams. But a teen romantic comedy morphs into a thriller, then zombie pic,” Stoll said at Ventana Sur.

For decades, beyond local comedies, Latin America has largely turned out small social-issue art-house pics, lamenting its suffering. It’s what the world’s come to expect, says the site. But a new generation of Latin American filmmakers is questioning this approach. If one trend was evident this weekend among a wash of projects brought to Ventana Sur by hundreds of producers from Latin America and beyond, it’s a surge in genre.

Stoll is completing a first draft. He will then work with Gonzalo Delgado.

The Summer Hit is set up at Temperamento Films, Stoll’s new production shingle after the dissolution of Control Z, and Florencia Larrea’s Kine-Imagenes in Chile.

The teen cast will be multinational, given that Brazilians, Argentineans and Chileans also summer in Uruguay.

“Our brochure says Latin America has the right to see its own zombies,” Stoll said.

    Indeed they do!
