A New Clip to Make You Break Out into a Cold Sweat

0
0

Get ready to get shopping, kids! Today's the day that Adrián García Bogliano's horror flick Cold Sweat (Sudor Frío) hits DVD, and we've got an exclusive clip on tap for you right now. Dig it!

From the Press Release
Barely 30 years old, writer-director Adrián García Bogliano has more than a dozen horror features and short films under his belt, and he tops himself in COLD SWEAT, a pulse-pounding horror thriller whose title aptly describes what it produces in audiences. A sensation at the 2011 SXSW festival, it will chill the bones of home viewers when it arrives on DVD on January 17, 2012, from Dark Sky Films and MPI Media Group. It carries an SRP of $24.98.

With films like 36 Steps, I’ll Never Die Alone, Watch ’em Die, and Rooms for Tourists, Bogliano has quickly established himself as a master whose work transcends the limits of horror and suspense – even garnering a Critic’s Choice notice in The New York Times. COLD SWEAT may be his most effective effort to date.

When Roman’s girlfriend Jackie disappears, he expects to find her in the arms of another man. And, with the help of a friend, find her he does – but there is no lover on the scene, only a pair of demented old men keeping her locked away in the basement of their crumbling mansion. Armed with wild-eyed, reactionary political ideals and case after case of decades-old and highly unstable explosives, the villainous duo are conducting illicit experiments on a string of young women lured to their home via the Internet. With Jackie doused in nitroglycerine, her every step toward escape is fraught with the possibility of sudden death. If Roman cannot free his young love, she is likely to end up in pieces.

A delirious, old-school horror picture with the most memorable villains in years at its core, COLD SWEAT was a huge hit at the SXSW festival thanks to its creator’s wild imagination and sense of showmanship. Loaded with memorable characters and stylish action, it’s a shocker that never fails to entertain.

Starring Facundo Espinosa (The Motorcycle Diaries), Marina Glezer (Valentin), and Camila Velasco as the unfortunate girlfriend who must very carefully strip off all of her nitro-soaked clothes, COLD SWEAT has been called “a highly volatile mix of The Wages of Fear (1953) and ‘torture porn’ tropes, with an uncomfortable grounding in political reality” (Anton Bitel, Sight and Sound), whose director “constructs suspense so skillfully here” (Fred Topel, Screen Junkies).

So the question beckons... just how different will this new version of Total Recall be in comparison to the blast that was the Arnold Schwarzenegger running rampant on Mars flick? Pretty damned different. Read on for your first look at the official synopsis.

Len Wiseman directs the film based upon the Philip K. Dick tale We Can Remember It For You Wholesale. Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Bryan Cranston and Jessica Biel star.

The remake will be landing in theatres on August 3rd, 2012.

    Synopsis
Total Recall is an action thriller about reality and memory, inspired anew by the famous short story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” by Philip K. Dick. Welcome to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories. For a factory worker named Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell), even though he's got a beautiful wife (Kate Beckinsale) whom he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life - real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man. Finding himself on the run from the police – controlled by Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston), the leader of the free world – Quaid teams up with a rebel fighter (Jessica Biel) to find the head of the underground resistance (Bill Nighy) and stop Cohaagen. The line between fantasy and reality gets blurred, and the fate of his world hangs in the balance as Quaid discovers his true identity, his true love, and his true fate.

As if being the owners of the Taj Mahal (the real one, not the Donald Trump version) weren't enough to be proud of for the people of India, they will soon have their very own version of Dracula, being produced in the Malayalam language, to enjoy. And of course it's in stunning 3D!

And we're not just talking about broke-ass red and blue glasses 3D here. The film, entitled Again Dracula, will be made in the latest IMAX 3D fusion technology, Avatar style, with a budget of Rs.10 crores (from what I can come up with, that's about $2 million US).

We've got a shot of the film's star, Sudheer, below and a teaser trailer. Looks like they're going more "Dark Shadows" and less Twilight. Other cast members include South Indian actress Anushka Shetty, Meghna Raj and Thilakan. Dracula Again is directed by Vinayan for Akash Films.

    From the Press Release
In the Malayalam Dracula, the spirit of Dracula enters into the body of a forensic surgeon who is working in Kerala. Then the rest of the movie shows the terror he creates. The film is produced by Preman Pothen and Sanjeev Menon. Cinematography is done by Antonio Rui Riverio and sound recording by Rasul Pookutty. The Malayalam version of Dracula will be having both Indian and foreign artists in the cast and crew.

Bringing back one of his fallen comrades, Sturges doesn’t realize that a couple of camel spiders stowed away and now have access to an environment where they can breed at an exponential rate, freely hunting for prey and unafraid of any predator - including man. No place is safe, no one is beyond their paralyzing sting. In the end a small band of hearty fighters are forced to make one last stand against the creatures.

Snow White: A Deadly Summer on DVD this Spring

    0
    0

March 20th is the first day of spring. What better day to release a movie called Snow White: A Deadly Summer? Yep, there’s yet another Snow White movie. That brings the tally to two upcoming theatrical Snow White movies and now two direct-to-DVD Snow White flicks, and that’s in addition to Snow White being an integral character on ABC’s “Once Upon a Time”. Fairest-of-them-all Mania is sweeping Hollywood.

Lionsgate Home Entertainment is set to release this terrifying spin on the Snow White fairy tale from prolific b-movie director David DeCoteau starring Shanley Caswell (Joseph Kahn’s Detention), Maureen McCormick (aka Marcia of “The Brady Bunch”), and the living legend Eric Roberts on March 20th. The only disc extra will be a stills gallery.

Devastated by her father’s remarriage, Snow (Shanley Caswell) begins to act out toward her new stepmother (Maureen McCormick). Given an ultimatum by his new wife, Snow’s father (Eric Roberts) sends his daughter off to a summer camp, unaware of its dark past. Snow soon learns that the camp was the site of a murder several years ago and that the suspect fled into the woods, never to be seen again. Not long into her deadly summer, campers begin dying off and Snow feels as though a killer is watching her.

As you will see in the trailer before, despite being a David DeCoteau flick, this Snow White will not have her encountering seven dwarves that turn out to be shirtless hunks that like to rub themselves in slow motion for minutes at a time.

Does Andy Serkis Deserve a Best Supporting Actor Nod? This Video Should Help You Decide!

Andy Serkis is single-handedly creating a new art form. The man who portrayed Gollum in the Lord of the Rings films, Kong in King Kong ('05) and most recently Caesar in Rise of the Planet of the Apes (Blu-ray/DVD review here) has brought CGI performance to a new level.

Now the question is being asked: Has Serkis elevated the status of the CGI performer enough that he deserves a nod for Best Supporting Actor when the Academy Award nominations are announced next Tuesday? We've got a video that might help you decide.

Thanks to our friends at Hitfix, we have a video to share with you that shows Serkis performing before the CGI effects were added. In this emotional scene Caesar's adopted human father, Will (James Franco), is leaving him behind, much to the ape's dismay. Fox is pushing for Serkis to earn the nomination, which would obviously be the first ever for a motion capture performance. It wouldn't hurt to show this video to the Academy, illustrating just how much effort and physicality went into Serkis' performance.

Take a look at the side-by-side performances (the video contains Serkis' performances both before and after the CGI was added) and let us know what you think. Is this performance Academy Award worthy?

    Synopsis
Martin is a mentally disturbed loner who lives with his nagging mother in a bleak London housing project, where loud neighbors and cramped living conditions threaten to plunge this victim of sexual and psychological abuse over the edge. He works the night shift as a security guard in an underground parking garage, where customers and their vehicles come and go as he indulges his obsession with The Human Centipede (First Sequence), watching the film over and over on the small TV set in his office and meticulously examining the scrapbook he has lovingly filled with memorabilia from the film, including the mouth-to-anus surgery instructions made famous by Dr. Heiter, the mad scientist from Martin’s favorite movie.

Pushed to the brink by his harridan mother, haunted by the teasing voices of his abusive and incarcerated father, Martin sets into motion his plan to emulate Heiter’s centipede by creating his own version, in a rented warehouse, which he begins to fill with victims, including a loud neighbor, two drunk nightclubbers, a prostitute, a lecherous john, and several more, including Martin’s pièce de résistance, one of the actresses from The Human Centipede (First Sequence). Except that Martin lacks the surgical skill, medical instruments and operating theater necessary to create a larger centipede in the image of Dr. Heiter’s masterpiece. So he makes use of materials at hand: duct tape, staple gun, household tools and a fanboy moxie.

What follows is one of the most harrowing and terrifying films ever conceived, featuring a central character that makes First Sequence's Dr. Heiter seem downright cuddly in comparison. The Human Centipede 2 (Full Sequence) is a triumph in biological horror by one of the new masters of the horror film.

Exclusive Interview: Joe Carnahan on The Grey, Why There Won't Be an A-Team 2 and More!

    0
    0

Exclusive Interview: Joe Carnahan on The Grey, Why There Won't Be an A-Team 2 and More!Writer/director Joe Carnahan might not be known for making emotional powerhouse type films, but with his latest, The Grey, he's looking to step beyond Hollywood's perceptions of his career and show off a different side of himself as a filmmaker.

Dread Central recently caught up with Carnahan for an exclusive interview with the director, who chatted with us about his long journey to get The Grey made, why he considers star Liam Neeson to be one of the greatest living actors today and the reason fans won't be seeing an A-Team 2 anytime soon. He also offered up a small tidbit on a brand new project that has yet to be announced.

Although the turnaround on The Grey from beginning of production until the film's release has been a relatively quick one (just a tad over a year now), Carnahan discussed how the project had been in the works for well over four years now.

"I first read Ian's (co-writer Ian Mackenzie Jeffers) short story back when I was working on MI:3, before I got fired or I quit - who knows anymore (laughs) - but as soon as I read the short story, I fell in love with it," explained Carnahan. "I loved the journey, the emotions and how smart it was, and frankly, it was unlike anything I was really doing around that time. It was the absolute opposite of the 'big star, big studio' world I was working in, and I knew that I had to make this stripped-down story of survival into a movie."

"I had Ian give me a partial draft of a script after I read his story, and I basically worked with that for over four and a half years until I was absolutely comfortable with the story. It was nice to work like that because I wasn't under anyone else's deadline so I had the luxury of letting the story evolve for a long time, which is rare," added Carnahan.

And while Carnahan never would turn down an opportunity to collaborate with Neeson (the two worked together on The A-Team back in 2009), he explained how a random conversation at dinner ended up in the pair reteaming for The Grey. "I had been out to dinner with Jules (Daly, producer), and Liam overheard us talking about the project a few seats away and asked me what it was about and if there was 'something in there for me.' And of course there was so I sent him the script in August 2010, he loved it and we began shooting in January 2011. It was an incredibly quick turnaround process, but everything really worked out great."

"I really feel like Liam is one of our greatest living actors. He's eminently watchable and has such a nobility that he brings into every one of his roles. The way he can carry a story on his shoulders is so effortless that I knew bringing him onto The Grey was going to be something special, and his onscreen grace really lent itself well to the emotional aspects of this story. He's the complete package," added Carnahan.

When it came time to finish casting The Grey, Carnahan talked about how necessary it was to get "men" involved in the film and not cater to Hollywood's expectations of a cast filled with a bunch of "pretty boys".

"It's funny; when we were casting, I had a lot of 'big names' wanting to come in and audition, and one of the 'bigger' names on my list called me the day of his audition to ask if we could reschedule because he had a cold," said Carnahan. "I knew right there that wasn't going to fly because of the type of movie we were planning on making. I knew that he wasn't the 'stock' of actor we needed involved with this, and I really couldn't be any happier with our entire cast that we finally did assemble. This wasn't an easy shoot, but they made it easier for me in some respects by being so willing to endure a tough shoot."

Carnahan added "And when you see these guys talk about their lives, and why they have to survive, you believe them because a lot of what you see about their characters is true to life. Pictures of their families, stories they tell of their kids, that's all real. It's hard to explain, but it added so much emotion and authenticity to their scenes."

As the director behind a few studio action films, no one was thinking Carnahan had a shot at making The Grey successfully - and the person who doubted him the most was the director himself.

"Honestly, a lot of the reasoning behind me wanting to go and make a movie like The Grey was because of the perception of my career in the industry and the fact that I didn't want to be known as the guy who could only make one kind of film. I have more of a kinship with my movies like Narc or Smokin' Aces more so than, say, The A-Team; and I knew making The Grey would be a huge challenge for me because I wasn't sure I could actually do it."

With The Grey heading to theaters everywhere on January 27th, we asked Carnahan what's up next for him and whether or not he thought fans might get to enjoy a second A-Team on the big screen.

"I really don't see a second A-Team movie happening; the reality of what making a movie like that costs is just really too huge to be worth the gamble at this point," explained Carnahan. "Before you even shoot anything, you already know it's going to cost 'X' to make it and 'Y' to market it, and I don't see that kind of money being spent on another movie. The reality is that we came out during the same summer as The Karate Kid remake, which had a completely different tone to it than our movie did, and I honestly think that hurt us a bit."

"Killing Pablo is definitely a future project that is close to my heart, but there's another opportunity that has come up recently that involves a property from the 1970's that I am pretty excited about. I can't say what property that is, but I do welcome the speculation (laughs). But we've gotten the official green light on it, and we've got the producing team from Black Swan and The Ides of March on board so it's really exciting for me. I expect we'll be shooting that one closer to the end of the year, and that's the most I've told anyone about the project so far (laughs)," added Carnahan.

Open Road Films will release the highly anticipated, action-packed survival thriller The Grey (review here) in theaters nationwide on January 27th, 2012.

Exclusive Interview: Co-writer/Director Adrián García Bogliano Talks Cold Sweat, Argentinian Politics, Future Projects and More! After an incredible festival run throughout 2011, co-writer and director Adrián García Bogliano is celebrating the release of his latest thriller Sudor Fríos - or Cold Sweat for all you gringos out there - on DVD shelves everywhere on January 17th courtesy of Dark Sky Films and MPI Media Group.

Starring Facundo Espinosa (The Motorcycle Diaries), Marina Glezer (Valentin) and newcomer Camila Velasco, the Spanish-language thriller centers around two villainous old men (Omar Musa and Omar Gioiosa), remnants of a time of war and different ideals, who lure young women into their home only to subject the insolent hostages to a barrage of tests and torture via the use of decades old (and highly unstable) explosives they keep hidden away in their decrepit house.

Dread Central had the opportunity to talk with Bogliano about Cold Sweat, the inspiration behind his film, how real-life politics shaped his story and what's up next for the ever-busy filmmaker (at age 31, he's already written nine short films, ten features and has then gone on to direct 15 of those projects as well). Bogliano discussed with us what inspired the story behind his unusual thriller and how the socio-political climate of Argentina in the 1970's played a huge part in Cold Sweat.

"I wanted to make an homage to the films I've always loved, and I had always had this one visual stuck in my mind - of people having to carry unstable dynamite down a difficult road - and decided to make that, just on a smaller scale," explained Bogliano. "I've always loved this one quote from Sidney Lumet when he's talking about making a movie just simply with what you have laying on a table and getting the story to fit that scale so that's what I did here. Instead of trying to carry dynamite for long distances, now the characters are soaked in nitroglycerine and basically have to make it from the basement of this old house to the roof safely before they blow up."

"The idea of someone having explosives these days in Argentina isn’t really that commonplace because it's not a particularly violent country now; in the 70s, though, the country was dealing with a dictatorship and violent groups of people committing some of the worst crimes imaginable so I started thinking about what if someone from that dictatorship still had explosives around, how would they use them and why would they use them; and the story came out of that inspiration," added Bogliano.

Being a huge horror fan himself, Bogliano knew that his villains would be the key to creating an effective terror tale. "I wanted our villains to be the complete opposite of what you'd expect a villain to look like. When walking around Argentina, you see a lot of older men who are very similar to our villains in Cold Sweat who seem harmless and nice. But what if they weren't. I thought about what it must have been like decades ago in Germany and what would you do if you happened to make friends with someone, only to find out they were an ex-Nazi."

Bogliano added, "Part of the challenge for me was figuring out how these two old men would be able to lure women to them and do it logically so the idea of the Internet popped into my head because our society now is so open online and I think people forget that not everyone who may be interacting with you is being 100 percent honest. And using the Internet also explored the idea of how the villains have to adapt to this new world that they truly hate. I know a lot of people don't like when the villains talk about their motivations, but for me, I love it. And I knew these were the kind of villains who would talk about why they were doing what they were doing because in their minds they were right and people needed to know they were right. It's about these clashing generations and how men who used to live under 'Big Brother' have to adapt to this 'new world' that they find incredibly empty and lacking in morals."

Even though Bogliano is something of an 'old pro' himself with almost 20 projects to his credit, he discussed how his latest was definitely one of his hardest stories to shoot. "Making Cold Sweat was really interesting for me because we only had 19 days to shoot and didn't have any time at all really to prepare for the shoot at all. We only had two cameras so my brother had to shoot all the second-unit footage himself even, and with all the effects and the large number of shots we had to get done, it was incredibly difficult to pull off. I didn't even get a chance to work with the cast a lot before we started shooting - I think we had one meeting for two hours before production - so a lot of the magic you see in the movie is completely all on them."

With Cold Sweat releasing this week and a number of announced projects on his slate, we asked Bogliano to talk about what's coming up for him and what keeps him coming back to the horror genre, time and time again.

"I love horror movies," said Bogliano. "I want to keep making them for a very long time, but the truth is, as a movie fan, I really love all kinds of movies so I don't know if I would ever turn down the chance to make a movie outside of horror, but this is where I definitely want to stay. Both Dario Argento and Brian De Palma are huge influences on me, and as a storyteller I like taking subjects that you usually don't see in horror movies (like the political climate of Argentina in the 1970s) and incorporating them into my stories. To me, that gives the story a little more authenticity and maybe it helps connect with audiences better, too - or I hope it does."

"My next film Penumbra is coming out in the US in March through IFC Films, which is really amazing. I loved seeing the reaction to Penumbra at Fantastic Fest so I'm really excited to see how fans react when it comes out. I just finished shooting my segment for The ABCs of Death, but I can't say much about that except that I'm really excited to be a part of that film. I'm also currently preparing my next movie called Here Comes the Devil, and it's the first movie I've ever made in Mexico so that's exciting, too. MPI came on board to help us get the movie made, and I am so honored to have their support while making this movie. It's a ghost story shot in Spanish, and hopefully I'll have more news in a few months on when it will come out."

Special thanks to Adrián García Bogliano (while on set, no less!) for taking some time to speak with us today, and make sure to check out Cold Sweat now that it's released on DVD shelves everywhere!

Screenplay Now Online in Memoriam of Deadgirl 2

One of our favorite flicks around these parts is without question Trent Haaga's Deadgirl. A depraved tale of a few kids who come across a nude female zombie and ... well ... act the way psycho teens would act. Talk of a sequel has been swirling around forever. However, the coffin nail has come.

"There was some hoopla about a year ago about the fact that Deadgirl 2 was being talked about," writes creator Trent Haaga. "I'm not going to get into all of the terrible particulars that killed the project, but needless to say the outcome wasn't pretty and I don't think that a sequel will ever get made. It certainly won't get made with my participation. And it's probably the best that it remain this way."

Haaga continues, "But I did write a script for it. I always saw the original Deadgirl as a condemnation of misogyny as opposed to being misogynous - the boys were the monsters, not the "monster" of the title. But a lot of people didn't see it that way. My idea for the sequel was to try and tell a story from the point of view of a female outcast and what would happen if she found the Deadgirl this time ... instead of using the Deadgirl for the impetus of her sexual fantasies, what if she used the Deadgirl for her revenge fantasies instead? I also wanted to put the story back into the "really small rural town" where the first one was supposed to take place (we shot the first movie in Los Angeles, and while it looks a lot like "anytown," it didn't capture that economic desperation that I was hoping for ... desperation that would have added to the boys' bizarre and angry choices). What I ended up writing could maybe be described as "Precious meets The Pit with a zombie attack dog."

In a perfect world we would have seen this flick and reveled in every second of it, but it's just not to be. In any event, Haaga has uploaded his screenplay online for fans to read.

Liv Tyler to Experience Ti West's Side EffectWe've been saying that Ti West is a director to keep your eyes on for years now, and it finally seems as if the rest of the world is catching up. Need proof? Mr. West has landed some truly big name talent for his next flick, The Side Effect.

According to Deadline, Liv Tyler is set to star in The Side Effect, the next thriller by writer-director Ti West. In the film Tyler will play Catherine Rigby, a woman who spends several months alone in space as an experimental subject for a global pharmaceutical company and finds herself inexplicably pregnant. Paranoia and hysteria reign as the truth behind the conception grows more elusive and she remains stranded in space.

Tyler called West “a super-talented exciting young filmmaker. The role of Rigby is a fantastic character within a great thriller, and I am looking forward to sinking my teeth into the part.

West said he hasn’t abandoned his genre origins with this film. “Although it is still somewhat of a horror film, it is much more psychological than any of my previous efforts,” he said. “It was essential that I find an actress who could portray a wide range of emotion and always earn the audience’s sympathy no matter what the situation. As soon as I sat down with Liv, it was obvious she was the one.
