WWE and TNA's Al Snow, Matt Niehoff, and Brian Cunningham Talk Overtime

Okay, kids! Overtime: The Movie (review) releases to the masses on January 1, 2013, and fans will laugh until their eyes bleed in this latest sliver of horror/sci-fi lunacy.

We recently had the opportunity to set down with WWE Superstar AL Snow and the creative geniuses behind the film - Matt Niehoff and Brian Cunningham.

AMANDA DYAR:Overtime stars wrestling legend Al Snow and John Wells as the hit duo Raph and Max. How did you guys go about recruiting these two actors for the roles, and what directing tips did you give the duo that allowed them to work so well together?

Al Snow, Matt Niehoff, and Brian Cunningham Talk Overtime

MATT NIEHOFF: As a director, I wish this answer was more exotic. But honestly, John Wells and I used to play in bands together back in our younger years (there was always a debate on who had the bigger arms back then... Now... It's John). Anyway, he is good looking and has a fantastic personality, I knew he was perfect for the part of Max. How did Al get in the movie? He just showed up to the audition (he lived in Kentucky at the time).Since Al Snow was one of my childhood heroes, I wish I had a more epic story, but that was how it went down. As far as directing tips to get the chemistry between al and John down, that was really all them. I feel like the thing I said the most to them was: Forget what the script says, just do it how you would do it... John and Al had such great natural chemistry that Brian and I actually rewrote many scenes as we went along based on how we thought Al and John would play it out.

AMANDA: The film was in large part written, directed, edited and created by yourself and your partner in crime, Brian Cunningham. How difficult was creating Overtime with so many duties falling on your own shoulders, and were there any parts of creating the film that was easier with just the two of you working on it?

MATT: Coming from a commercial industry background, one of the biggest challenges is dealing with final creative approval, which can sometimes go through as many as 12 people. So, just having to work with Brian was a luxury. Brian and I are total opposites in every essence of the word, however, we are best friends. This is a formula for complete and perfect compromise. We both negate the negative aspects of our writing and visions. Meaning, we disagree a lot, but when we do agree on something it applies to a wider variety of audience. That's where Overtime came from. When you write, direct, and edit a movie I actually thing that it makes it easier because you almost have a finished product in your head before you even film anything.

Al Snow, Matt Niehoff, and Brian Cunningham Talk Overtime

AMANDA: The soundtrack of Overtime features many songs from the music group The VilleBillies. Were you guys familiar with the group before the film, how did you decide you wanted to feature the band's music in the film and how much of the great soundtrack was composed specifically for the film?

MATT: This one is a straight shot answer. I grew up with Demi (one of the lead singers) and before Overtime, I became friends with Tuck, the other lead singer. So when I said I was making a movie, they were all about being involved. Plus, being one of the biggest bands to come out of Kentucky, it was an honor to have them be a part of the film. My good friend Donnie and Amy created the Overtime theme song at the end credits. Since Overtime is sort of a tribute to the action movies from the 80's, it seemed right to have a theme song. All the rest of the music in the film was composed by the films sound designer Jason Paige. He is a musical genius.

AMANDA:Overtime is a horrific tale of survival all while presenting plenty of tongue-in-cheek humor throughout. What made you guys decide to incorporate so many different genres into the film, and what difficulties did it present as a writer to feature the different elements needed to make the movie work?

BRIAN CUNNINGHAM: When we decided to make Overtime, we really just wanted to incorporate all the elements we loved in movies growing up. That included our favorite family films, action films like Lethal Weapon, and horror/sci-fi movies like Aliens among others. There was a lot of brainstorming and trial and error (at one point we had a pretty heavy drama on our hands) until we worked the plot into something that was off-the-wall, had all the elements we loved and still had a strong story backbone...that of a Dad trying to be the best Dad he can be under tough circumstances.

AMANDA: A short ways into the film, our heroes encounter a building full of undead extraterrestrials appropriately named Zaliens. Where did the idea for these creatures came about, and how fun was is to write and create the violent scenes of Zalien slaughter?

BRIAN:Well, I feel like these kinds of movies live and die by how creative you go with the creatures. That doesn't mean you necessarily need millions of dollars of effects, though. We wanted to create a monster that was evocative of a bunch of different screen monsters without being immediately identifiable. So the idea of a zombie-alien, which is a group of dead, slimy, tentacled humans acting as a sort of alien collective, came from that. Then we added the overly-phallic tentacles, and John and Al just sort of ran with the humor. We had a blast coming up with new and horrific ways to dispense with our Zalien horde.

And the fact that a new sting would reanimate a previously dead host meant we could use our favorite extras in multiple scenes. Which was great when we were working with such a small budget.

Al Snow, Matt Niehoff, and Brian Cunningham Talk Overtime

AMANDA: Any horror fan can appreciate the work that went into creating Overtime, but gamers that watch the film will notice plenty of video game references throughout the film. Where did you draw inspiration for some of these parody moments in the film and what are some of your favorite games, personally?

BRIAN: To be honest, I'm not a huge gamer. I know Matt is, so this might be better suited for him. Instead, I was the guy in college who would watch his friends play Metal Gear Solid for hours on end just so I could watch all the cut scenes.

I do love to watch movie adaptations of video games though. Most of them are pretty bad, and Overtime is kind of a parody of video game adaptations as much as anything. Video games and horror movies have elements that players/viewers just expect, so we decided that instead of fighting those we would embrace them and play them out in a tongue-in-cheek way. So you have the "boss" fight. You have the bottle-neck machine gun shoot out. You have the inexplicable cache of weapons and the harrowing race to safety. It's all part of the fun of the genre.

Then when we worked out the idea of the Y-Box 720, it was a great way to really have fun with the video game influences and tie the movie together. The Y-Box commercial was a blast to shoot because it put the gaming culture under a magnifying glass and let us lovingly poke fun at it. And hopefully it lets you know that we aren't taking ourselves too seriously.

AMANDA DYAR: You play a badass hitman named Raph in the film Overtime. Can you tell us a bit more about your character in the film and how you got along with co-star John Wells on and off set?

AL SNOW: I believe as a character Raph is truly a good guy. Yes, he is a hitman and does kill people, but being a religious man he justifies this by believing he is doing god’s work (as he only kills those he believes deserve it and have slipped through the law). Raph also feels this is his way of making the world safe for his family.

As far as working with John Wells―I really think I could not have gotten any luckier to have John as a partner on this film both figuratively and literally. John is a great actor, but more importantly, a really great human being. John and I had never met, and the very first scene was like we had been best friends for years, and that chemistry I think is what really makes this film.

Al Snow, Matt Niehoff, and Brian Cunningham Talk Overtime

AMANDA: Obviously, Raph is a good guy and a family man at heart, despite his rough exterior and his unusual job. How difficult was getting in the mindset of playing the killer we see in some scenes and then showing your softer side when Raph was at home with his family?

AL:Getting into the mindset of living such a dichotomous life was actually not all that difficult―considering I’ve been kind of doing that throughout my whole wrestling career. (laughter) Being on the road and becoming the character you would see in the ring night in and night out―then returning home and just being a regular guy who was a dad and husband.

A guy who one minute was ramped up and wanting to tear a guy’s head off to just like in the movie―then getting a call from my wife asking why the lawn mower doesn’t work. (laughter)

AMANDA: In addition to your acting career, you've also have a Hall of Fame worthy wrestling career that spans your work with ECW, the WWE during the Attitude Era, Tough Enough and now TNA under your belt, and we'd be remiss not to ask you about it. Is there any one moment of your wrestling career that sticks out above the rest in your mind and what does the future hold in the business that you've already given so much too? Also, what in the world ever happened to Head?

AL: I’ve been very lucky to have gotten to do what I have loved doing for as long as I have gotten to do it. I have told people that I have been on vacation for 30 years now. (laughter) Presently I have had the good fortune of being involved with TNA and Impact wrestling on Spike TV―as both an on air character and the Senior Director of talent relations and programming. It is truly a great opportunity to still be an active part of the business I love so much and a part helping a company grow into something that could eventually rival WWE.

When I started getting to the end of my in ring career a big concern was what would I have to replace what I had been so driven by and passionate about―thankfully I feel I can now direct all of that into acting. My hope and aspiration is that I can be lucky enough to get to do something yet again that I truly love for another 30 years.

Oh and HEAD is still by my side. You know what they say "Good HEAD is hard to find and when you do you’ve got to keep a hold of it." (laughter) Not to mention if I don’t it’s not like they can get around on their own since they don’t have any legs.

Overtime is scheduled to release on DVD, Blu-ray and Video-on-Demand January 1, 2013. For more information on the film, check out the official Overtime: The Movie website.

Synopsis:
Raph (Al Snow) and Max (John Wells) only kill bad guys, and only after their boss Sam, a high-powered attorney, has cashed a nice paycheck for getting her sleazy clients off the hook. When Sam sends our heroes on a routine hit, they find themselves caught up in a conspiracy they never imagined. But whatever trouble they’ve gotten themselves into is nothing compared to the wrath of Raph’s wife if he doesn’t make it home in time for his son’s birthday party. Being a good hitman is tough; being a good dad is killer!

B-Sides: This Song Came from Uranus

$

A sci-fi space adventure about a rocket crew journeying to the seventh planet, where they confront a mind-reading alien that forces them to contend with their innermost nightmares; this lounge lizard love song is certainly not the sort of theme song you would expect to kick off such a flick.

Sid Pink’s 1962 Danish-American science fiction extravaganza Journey to the Seventh Planet starred the late, great John Agar as the captain of a five-man international rocket crew exploring the solar system, as the United Nations space program was known for in 2001, the year in which the film takes place. Uranus is the last vestige in our galaxy in need of exploring so off they go on a journey to the seventh planet. What they find is a being that preys on them by getting inside their minds and manifesting their desires and fears, whether it be beautiful women or mutant rat and centipede monsters.

Opening the film is a song boasting the same title as the film, but a less befitting tune you’d be hard to find. Sung by Otto Brandenburg, the theme to Journey to the Seventh Planet sounds like a love song you’d heard a 1960’s Las Vegas lounge lizard crooning to a crowd that are only there for his show because they couldn’t get tickets to Sinatra. To be fair, it’s not a bad song for what it is, but certainly not my cup of tea.

A love song about Uranus… Take it away, Otto!

Cooperative Board Game Kingdom Death: Monster Is a Project to Get Behind

I love horror board games. One of my favorite things is playing "Last Night on Earth" with good friends, solid beer and the Dawn& Day soundtracks on repeat. When news of this particular project landed in my inbox, I just couldn't resist telling our readers about it.

"Kingdom Death: Monster" is a cooperative board game set in a nightmare-horror world. Fight for your life, scavenge, craft, and band together to survive. But wait until you see the effort the game's creators are putting into this sucker. GORGEOUS and inventive figure sculpts, an interesting mythology and a generally high-concept and involving flow.

Don't take my word for it, of course. Dig on the YouTube video below that chronicles "Kingdom Death: Monster" in all its detail. And if this is something you're interested in, be sure to head on over to their Kickstarter page to contribute a little something. These guys have already landed WELL over their target, but some of the incentives they're offering to donators are very cool and could be of interest to someone planning to check the game out.

There's a Devil Inside A Haunted House

I still receive no end of shit for daring to dig The Devil Inside, and just when I thought those days were behind me, those damned Wayans brothers have to go and release a hilarious parody poster for A Haunted House.

In the Wayans family tradition of successful movies like Scary Movie 1 & 2, Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood, and, most recently, Dance Flick, Marlon Wayans co-wrote the script for A Haunted House along with Rick Alvarez, who has produced several Wayans family movies.

The Devil's Inside A Haunted House

Open Road Films will release A Haunted House– which stars Marlon Wayans, Cedric the Entertainer, David Koechner, Nick Swardson, and Essence Atkins – nationwide on January 11, 2013, pitting it directly against Dimension Films’ Scary Movie 5 release, which opens the same day.

Synopsis
In an outrageous send-up of the Paranormal Activity movies, The Devil Inside and other "found footage" movies, A Haunted House features young couple Malcolm (Marlon Wayans) and Kisha (Essence Atkins), who have just moved in to their dream house. As they settle in, they quickly find they’re not alone. But it’s not the house that’s haunted; it’s Malcolm’s girlfriend who is possessed by a demon. Malcolm hires everyone from a priest to modern day ghostbusters to rid her of this unwelcome intruder, determined not to let the evil spirit ruin his relationship… or, more importantly, his sex life.

Todd Lincoln Buzzes About His Version of The Fly

Todd Lincoln Buzzes About His Version of The FlyJust a couple of days after David Cronenberg talked about his new vision for The Fly, Todd Lincoln, who was in line before Cronenberg, has decided to talk about what he wanted to do.

My version of The Fly was a dark, twisted, grounded re-imagining," said Lincoln. “Part Val Lewton, part J.G Ballard, part Neal Stephenson with some horror manga touches. This had nothing to do with the Cronenberg version, and it would absolutely not have had the same color palette. This was an all new vision and direction, but still done with complete respect for all five other Fly films and the original short story published in Playboy magazine that started it all.

Lincoln’s version would’ve shared more in common with the original Vincent Price movie than the later remake. “I especially dig the original The Fly (1958) and the third film Curse Of The Fly (1965). In my version, someone still becomes a fly, but who becomes it… how they become it… and what happens… are all completely different. I would have done it almost entirely with practical FX. Anyway, at the time I developed my take, it was too far out for the studio, and they ended up deciding to do more of a straight remake/update of Cronenberg’s Fly.

Their suspicions were finally confirmed one hot summer day when a young woman escaped the Sawyer house following the brutal murders of her four friends. After embarking on a road trip with friends to uncover her roots, she finds she is the sole owner of a lavish, isolated Victorian mansion. Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, was warned about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the glut of senses, the too-vivid memories. A Second Promo Checks In for NBC's Do No Harm

NBC's Jekyll and Hyde themed new series "Do No Harm" arrives on January 31st, and we have a look at the second promo for the show released by the network.

    Synopsis:
In “Do No Harm,” Dr. Jason Cole (Steven Pasquale, "Rescue Me") is a highly respected neurosurgeon who has it all – a lucrative career, confident charm, the gift of compassion. But he also has a deep, dark secret. One morning when he wakes up disoriented in a wrecked hotel room amidst several near-naked women he's never seen before, he knows one thing: It's happening again. Every night at the same hour, something inside Jason changes, leaving him almost unrecognizable – seductive, devious, borderline sociopathic.

This new man is his dangerous alternate personality who goes by the name of “Ian Price.” For years he's battled Ian, keeping him in check with a powerful experimental sedative. But now his – their – body has developed a resistance to the serum, setting Ian free once again. And to make matters worse, after being suppressed for so long, Ian's hell-bent on taking revenge on his oppressor. With everyone Jason cares about at risk – patients, friends, co-workers and even the woman he loves – he's got to stop Ian once and for all. Will they find some common ground, or will they bring each other down? Hell hath no fury like an alter ego scorned.

Also starring are Alana De La Garza ("Law & Order"), Michael Esper (A Beautiful Mind), Ruta Gedmintas ("The Borgias"), and Phylicia Rashad ("The Cosby Show"). "Do No Harm" is produced by Universal Television and Traugott Company. The executive producer/writer is David Schulner ("Desperate Housewives,""The Event"). Peter Traugott ("Ringer") and Rachel Kaplan ("Ringer") also are executive producers. Michael Mayer (NBC's "Smash") is the co-executive producer and director.

The Walking Dead: Q&A with IronE Singleton (T-Dog)

He may be gone from "The Walking Dead," but IronE Singleton (T-Dog) isn't forgotten, as evidenced by the Q&A with the actor that popped up on the show's blog today, in which he describes the mysterious call that portended his character's fate and mulls the possibility of T-Dog resurrecting as a zombie rapper.

Q: T-Dog's walker kill count this year seemed a lot higher than in previous seasons. Was that a welcome shift?

A: [In] the first episode I got enough kills to last for the next four seasons! People were always asking, "T-Dog, how many walkers are you going to take out?" Before, when I didn't have any, I would tell people, "I have about 500 kills -- off-screen." Like all those times the camera moves, he was taking out walkers. But this season I got enough to make up for the first two.

Q: As one of the Atlanta natives on the show, did you doing anything to help welcome the cast back to your city?

A: I had a screening with people here at the house. We had 150 people here, so you know I was excited. My wife did a terrific job of putting things together -- she handles all of that stuff. My job was just to post when they got here and do my 'Walking Dead" song.

    Q: "Walking Dead" song?

A: Have you heard it? It's my version of what a zombie would talk about if a zombie could talk. I'm rapping. And the beat is so hot!

Q: How did you learn that this season would be T-Dog's last?

The Walking Dead: Q&A with IronE Singleton (T-Dog)

A: I found out early on. Glen [Mazzara] and I were playing phone tag. I was talking to my wife, thinking Glen is calling me, but he's not telling me what it's about -- that's not a good sign. Normally when you call someone, you explain what you want to talk about. But he just kept saying, "IronE, I want to talk to you." Once we had the conversation -- it was probably around Episode 1 -- I was kind of bracing myself for it. It wasn't a crushing blow; I was like, "I understand." And I started to prepare myself.

    Q: How did you prepare?

A: This was my season to reflect -- my emotional season. I was thinking of all the good times we had and just relishing the moment and taking it all in because I knew that it would come to an end shortly.

Q: Did you have to come up with an elaborate excuse to tell anybody why you were home early from the set?

A: I'd normally say, "Well, production lasts until November, maybe December, so things are looking really good. So far so good!" My family knew all about it. I couldn't keep that away from them. But other than that it's top secret. I don't know what else I'd tell my wife; if I'm here more often than I was in the past, she would have been like, "Okay, why are you home?" What am I going to say?

Q: What was it like to go to work in a prison?

A: It was air-conditioned, which I don't think we've had since the CDC at the last episode of Season 1. It was blazing hot at the farm last year, so yeah, that was very refreshing. It was hazy because they had just put together the prison and there were a lot of chemicals in the air. Harmless, we were told. But I ended up wearing my mask a lot. But it was still nasty and filthy; it seemed like a real prison. We were all closed in, and it just felt really real.

Q: Do you have anything at home to immortalize T-Dog and your time on the show?

A: I got T-Dog's shield, and every cast and crew member signed it. Seemed like I had 300 signatures on it. That again told me what everybody thought of me, and that they appreciated me as much as I appreciated them. And of course, I also have my "Walking Dead" song.

Q: Maybe T-Dog could be reborn as a zombie rapper...

A: Crazier things could happen! Shane has been back on the show, so T-dog could, too. I would love to come back as the rapper zombie one day.

"The Walking Dead" returns February 10, 2013, with Episode 3.09, "The Suicide King," written by Evan Reilly and directed by Lesli Linka Glatter.
