Synopsis
Texas Chainsaw 3D continues the legendary story of the homicidal Sawyer family, picking up where Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror classic left off in Newt, Texas, where for decades people went missing without a trace. The townspeople long suspected the Sawyer family, owners of a local barbeque pit, were somehow responsible. Their suspicions were finally confirmed one hot summer day when a young woman escaped the Sawyer house following the brutal murders of her four friends. Word around the small town quickly spread, and a vigilante mob of enraged locals surrounded the Sawyer stronghold, burning it to the ground and killing every last member of the family – or so they thought.

Decades later and hundreds of miles away from the original massacre, a young woman named Heather learns that she has inherited a Texas estate from a grandmother she never knew she had. After embarking on a road trip with friends to uncover her roots, she finds she is the sole owner of a lavish, isolated Victorian mansion. But her newfound wealth comes at a price as she stumbles upon a horror that awaits her in the mansion’s dank cellars…

Pascal Laugier's Martyrs isn't exactly a film you like or dislike. It's more of something you just experience. That being said, this new bit of artwork from artist Gary Pullin designed for FrightFest in the UK... well, this we love!

I wanted to create a poster that played up the surgical aspect of the film and Martyr theme – a woman reborn in the Jesus Christ pose on a surgical cross is mysteriously fully enlightened,“ says Pullin.

In the 2008 film, a young woman's quest for revenge against the people who kidnapped and tormented her as a child leads her and a friend, who is also a victim of child abuse, on a terrifying journey into a living hell of depravity.

Will James Franco Return for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes?

$

There's no doubt about it; Rise of the Planet of the Apes caught a lot of people by surprise in terms of how good it was. With a sequel looming, MTV caught up with star James Franco to find out if he'll reprise his role as Will Rodman in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

I was going to be a small part of the next one,” Franco reveals. “There was a moment when Rupert Wyatt was going to direct the second one. A lot of the human characters that were in the first movie were dead in the sequel that Rupert was going to direct. But there was one scene, between Caesar and my character, maybe even just like on a video that was left behind, but then a lot of things happened, like [former Fox co-chairman] Tom Rothman, who was a big part of the first movie, left. Now Rupert’s not a part of it so I don’t know. My guess is I won’t be in it. Nobody’s talked to me since Rupert left.

Matt Reeves, stepping into the shoes originally worn by Rupert Wyatt, is directing the sequel to Fox’s 2011 hit Rise of the Planet of the Apes, with the new movie continuing the story of how ultra-intelligent simian Caesar presides over the fall of human civilization.

Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa, who penned the first installment, wrote the initial draft for Dawn. Scott Burns had written a draft for Wyatt, but when Reeves came on board, the studio and producers wanted something tailored specifically for him and hired Mark Bomback to do a rewrite. It should also be noted that Bomback did some uncredited script doctoring on Rise.

Andy Serkis is returning as Caesar, and Peter Chernin is back as producer. Fox has set a May 23, 2014, release date.

Look for more as it comes.

Watch the latest trailer below, and for more information check out the official website for The Butterfly Room.

Synopsis
Ann, a reclusive, elegant lady with an obsession for butterflies, is surprisingly befriended by the eerily beautiful young Alice. Using her seductive innocence, Alice establishes a disturbing mother-daughter relationship with Ann. Lured into her twisted world, Ann soon discovers that she is not the only recipient of the girl's affections.

Confronted by Alice's other lady friends, Ann's shock awakens a dark, hidden past, unchaining a spiral of madness: a series of brutal and bizarre crimes that Ann will have to commit to preserve her harmless and deceptive appearances. The only one who recognizes there's something unsettling about Ann is nine-year-old Julie, her next-door neighbor's daughter.

With the inevitable curiosity of a child, Julie begins to explore the corners of Ann's apartment, discovering a dark secret hidden in the walls of the forbidden butterfly room. No one believes what she's seen except for Ann's estranged daughter, Dorothy. Horrified, she realizes that the fate of the young girl lies in her hands. To save both Julie and herself, she must summon up the courage to confront an evil that has haunted her for years.

With special effects created by Academy Award winning AFX Studio and elegant and refined visuals, in contrast with the sickness of the story, The Butterfly Room is an all-female story, an American thriller with a European soul.

A New Dutch APP Brings Terror to Your Telephone Like Never BeforeTechnology gets greater and cooler every day, and it's not gonna be long before entertainment experiences are integrated in our lives seamlessly. That's why we're pretty excited about the new Dutch thriller APP, as it actually immerses you in the film via your smartphone.

IndieWire reports that shooting began this week for the new terror flick, which will be the first film in the world to synchronize a parallel storyline via app content to be accessed while in the movie theater.

While the sight of glowing smartphone screens is often infuriating and distracting, it will be reappropriated as a necessary component of the APP moviegoing experience, as codes and cryptic texts that the film's heroine receives will also appear on audience members' small screens throughout the theater.

Music video director Bobby Boermans is directing the film from a script by Robert A. Jansen. Whether or not Boermans will be the sole "director" of the second-screen application to accompany the film is unclear. The director and Jansen collaborated last year for the thriller Claustrofobia.

APP will hit theaters in the Netherlands in February 2013.

Synopsis
In the thriller APP, Anna (Hannah Hoekstra), a young student, gets caught up in her own virtual world. She is addicted to apps, social media and her smartphone. One day Anna discovers a mysterious new app on her phone. It has the answer to every question. Not just scientific questions, but also about her personal life and her friends. When the app starts sending her cryptic texts and codes connected to the sudden and strange deaths of people around her, it becomes evident that it is not just a handy app.

Exclusive: Brit Morgan Talks The Frozen, Reflects on True Blood and More

    $

    0

She played bad girl Debbie Pelt on several seasons of HBO's "True Blood," but now up-and-coming actress Brit Morgan is tackling snowmobile accidents, creepy strangers and being stuck stranded in the middle of a wintry forest for her latest thriller The Frozen.

Written and directed by Andrew Hyatt, The Frozen follows a young couple (Morgan and Seth David Mitchell) on a weekend getaway in a remote wooded area whose snowmobile takes a dive during an accident, leaving the pair stranded waiting for help; things get even worse when a mysterious hunter (Noah Segan) shows up, and suddenly surviving the freezing cold may be the very least of their problems once his presence begins to trigger a chain of terrifying events.

Recently Dread Central hopped on the phone with Morgan to discuss her experiences making the indie thriller The Frozen and why the challenging shoot appealed to her more adventurous side; we also chatted with the actress about her recent role as the troubled junkie Debbie on "True Blood," who unfortunately met the wrong side of Sookie's shotgun at the end of the 2011 season.

Check out the highlights from our exclusive interview with Morgan below, and look for The Frozen on DVD and VOD everywhere tomorrow, December 18th, courtesy of Arc Entertainment.

Dread Central: First of all, great job on this movie- I think what you guys managed to pull off in 13 days of shooting without a huge budget is pretty incredible.

Brit Morgan:Thanks so much! I'm really proud of this movie; I think people should definitely keep in mind the budget we had when we made this because I think that demonstrates just how much we all put into this project, including Andrew. We just went out there without a safety net and made a great little movie.

Dread Central: I'm sure when you read the script you could anticipate some of what you guys were going to have to endure in order to make The Frozen, but was there anything that really could prepare you for what you had to go through while making the movie?

Brit Morgan:You know…yes, I knew this was going to hard; probably the hardest thing I was ever going to make so of course you have to go in 'prepared,' but honestly, it ended up being a lot more intense than maybe I was ready for. So I guess maybe had I really known just how hard it would be to be out in those woods, freezing and trekking through all the snow like we did, maybe I would have chickened out early on (laughs). I'm just really glad I didn't second-guess myself too much before we went to shoot it or I might not have done it; looking back, though, of course it was all worth it.

It also forced me to discover a more adventurous side to myself, too, and really made all of my own 'survival instincts' kick in big time.

Dread Central: I really enjoyed that this wasn't your typical 'survival' movie either; was that part of the appeal for you since it wasn't a typical heroine role?

Brit Morgan:Yes, absolutely. The story wasn't typical and my character Emma wasn't typical either; she was complicated and makes real mistakes, which I thought was very relatable. Another thing that really appealed to me was that Emma was a strong character; she wasn't going to just wait around and be rescued or become a victim either- she's forced to become a badass, and that's not a character I've done before, which I loved.

Dread Central: Because so much of The Frozen rested on your shoulders, did that add any pressure to you in regards to your performance?

Brit Morgan:Oh, definitely; I felt huge pressure while working on this movie because if I couldn't live up to the script, the whole movie would fail so I knew I had to really step it up. I've never done anything like this before, and not only am I alone for a big chunk of the movie, but there's also not a ton of dialogue either so I really had to get into my character's head but, in some ways, in my own head, too. It was a truly amazing challenge to make this movie, but I loved it.

Dread Central: I know it's been over a year or so now, but I just wanted to mention how much I enjoyed your work on "True Blood"; I thought Debbie was such a great foil to Sookie but also very tragic in her own ways.

Brit Morgan:Oh thank you! Yeah, I loved Debbie- I never saw her as a villain at all. She had a lot of problems, but everything she did was always out of her love for Alcide. Debbie was a lost soul, and I think, as an actor, if you ever start to judge your character, then you lose authenticity. You have to love them unconditionally because that's the only way you can play things honestly as a performer. Plus, people do crazy things out of love, which I think is something we all can relate to (laughs).

    Synopsis
Mike (Mitchell) and Emma (Morgan) take an ill-advised winter camping trip and get stranded in the woods after a snowmobile accident. When he disappears, she is left on her own not only to battle the elements but also to elude a mysterious man (Segan) who has been tracking her through the forest.

It astounds me to this very day what films get turned into franchises... for better or worse. Case in point: Lake Placid. Still, this final chapter is a bit better than you'd think, and we have the home video details for you right here.

    From the Press Release
Horror icon Robert Englund (Nightmare on Elm Street franchise), Yancy Butler (Kick-Ass) and Elisabeth Röhm (TV’s “Heroes”) battle the most bloodthirsty, monster crocodiles on earth in the final installment of the Lake Placid franchise. LAKE PLACID: THE FINAL CHAPTER debuts on unrated DVD February 19th from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. In the film a rogue game warden (Butler, returning from Lake Placid 3) breaks out her guns after the schemes of an obsessed poacher (Englund) land a group of high school students into the midst of the man-eating crocodile “nature preserve.”

LAKE PLACID: THE FINAL CHAPTER was directed by Don Michael Paul from a screenplay by David Reed. Jeffrey Beach and Phillip J. Roth produced, with Cherise Honey acting as executive producer. It first aired on Syfy on September 29, 2012. It has a run time of approximately 86 minutes and is unrated.

    Synopsis
The crocs are back... and they're bigger, badder and more brutal than ever. After the deadly predators' last vicious attack, the government prevented their extermination. Sealed away in a nature preserve, they've been growing to record size, awaiting their next chance to feast on human flesh. Now, when a high school swim team takes a wrong turn directly into the crocs' hunting grounds... dinner is served. As the teens race to avoid the hungry reptiles, they become caught in a showdown between a rogue game warden (Yancy Butler, Kick-Ass) and a demented poacher (Robert Englund, A Nightmare on Elm Street). It's the last serving of hysterical horror in a finale that shows terror is best served raw.

Dexter Star David Zayas Heading to The FollowingMore casting news for Fox's "The Following" has hit the interwebs, and as always you'll find it right here. Sgt. Angel Batista of Miami Metro has retired from dealing with Dexter Morgan and will now be tracking a whole new band of psychos. We also have a look at a new promo for the show.

THR reports that the "Dexter" actor has been tapped to guest star on Fox's midseason drama "The Following." Zayas will play Tyson, a former FBI agent and good friend to Kevin Bacon's Ryan Hardy. He'll appear in the 10th episode of the Kevin Williamson drama, ultimately becoming an unlikely participant in Ryan's effort to bring down Joe Carroll's (James Purefoy) followers.

    Synopsis:
THE FBI estimates there are currently over 300 active serial killers in the United States. What would happen if these killers had a way of communicating and connecting with each other? What if they were able to work together and form alliances across the country? What if one brilliant psychotic serial killer was able to bring them all together and activate a following? Welcome to THE FOLLOWING, the terrifying new thriller from creator/executive producer Kevin Williamson (“The Vampire Diaries,” “Dawson’s Creek,” the Scream franchise) and director Marcos Siega (“The Vampire Diaries,” “Dexter”).

When notorious serial killer JOE CARROLL (James Purefoy, “Rome”) escapes from death row and embarks on a new killing spree, the FBI calls former agent RYAN HARDY (Emmy-nominated actor Kevin Bacon, X-Men: First Class) to consult on the case. Having since withdrawn from the public eye, Hardy was responsible for Carroll’s capture nine years ago, after Carroll murdered 14 female students on the Virginia college campus where he taught literature. Hardy is a walking textbook of all-things Carroll. He knows him better than anyone; he is perhaps Carroll’s only psychological and intellectual match. But the Ryan Hardy who broke the Carroll case years ago isn’t the same man today. Wounded both physically and mentally by his previous pursuit of this serial killer, it’s been a long time since Hardy has been in the field. This investigation is his redemption, his call to action. In contrast to nine years ago, Hardy isn’t calling the shots on this case. He works closely with an FBI team, which includes all-business and tough-as-nails JENNIFER MASON (Jeananne Goossen, The Vow, "Alcatraz") and young, razor-sharp MIKE WESTON (Shawn Ashmore, X-Men).

The team considers Hardy to be more of a liability than an asset. But Hardy proves his worth when he uncovers that Carroll was covertly communicating with a network of killers in the outside world. It quickly becomes obvious that he has more planned than just a prison escape, and there’s no telling how many additional killers are out there. The FBI’s investigation leads Hardy to CLAIRE MATTHEWS (Natalie Zea, “Justified”), Carroll’s ex-wife and mother of the criminal’s 10-year-old son, JOEY (newcomer Kyle Catlett). Close during Hardy’s initial investigation, Hardy turns to Claire for insight into Carroll’s next move. The tension rises when Carroll’s accomplices kidnap his intended last victim from nine years ago. Hardy becomes ever more determined to end Carroll’s game when he realizes that this psychopath intends to finish what he started. The thriller will follow Hardy and the FBI as they are challenged with the ever-growing web of murder around them, masterminded by the devious Carroll, who dreams of writing a novel with Hardy as his protagonist. The reinvigorated Hardy will get a second chance to capture Carroll, as he’s faced with not one but a cult of serial killers.

  • Rest in Peace Danny Steinmann

One of the saddest stories I've ever written here on Dread Central. Danny Steinmann didn't have the longest career, nor was his work appreciated by mainstream critics. But genre fans loved his crass and darkly humorous voice, and if you're anything like me, you hoped he'd revisit that territory one day. Unfortunately, that's not going to happen now.

We've received word that Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning director Danny Steinmann has passed away. Details are non-existent at this point, but we're inclined to believe Melanie Kinnaman, who posted the news to her Facebook page less than an hour ago.

Anyone who knows me knows how much I love that particular installment in the Friday the 13th saga, but Steinmann was also responsible for one of the greatest "urban decay" exploitation thrillers of the 1980s, Savage Streets. A movie which finds Linda Blair donning a skin-tight catsuit and taking on a gang of sleazeball punks. Beyond that, he also directed The Unseen (where Stephen Furst menaces Barbara Bach) and a very humorous 70s porno flick titled High Rise.

    Rest in Peace Danny Steinmann

One of the things I lament is what might've been had Steinmann been allowed to direct Last House on the Left - Part II. The movie was killed before it could get off the ground, but Steinmann had planned to resurrect Krug, raping and murdering his way across an isolated island. In short, a premise crafted specifically for this director!

I know this sounds like faint praise, but Steinmann brought so much wonderful humor and grit to his oeuvre that it's impossible to deny his style. Of course this stuff was never high art, but he understood what his audience wanted and delivered with aplomb.

We here at Dread Central would like to bid farewell to Danny Steinmann. The 1980s would not have been the same without his work, and we're grateful to have been there to enjoy it. Godspeed, good sir.

Predators Co-Writer Gets Hellified for Paramount

Predators Co-Writer Gets Hellified for ParamountA writer has been tapped for Hellified from Paramount and Lorenzo di Bonaventura. Dan Bradley is no longer attached to direct. Read on for all the latest details lest your soul be damned to the inferno for all eternity!

THR reports that Michael Finch, who co-wrote 2010’s Predators, will be the scribe to bring us Hellified, a supernatural action project set at Paramount and being produced by Di Bonaventura Pictures.

Originally picked up in June 2009 as a spec by Andy Burg, the story follows a strike force, comprised of criminals, that goes to hell in order to stop the End of Days. Second-unit director and stunt coordinator-turned-Red Dawn director Dan Bradley was attached at the time, when hell was conceived as a CGI-created inferno overrun by demons.

The project has been scaled back in the VFX department (and with Bradley gone) to accommodate a more moderate budget, and hell is now being envisioned as a ruined, bombed out urban landscape.
