In the Wayans family tradition of successful movies like Scary Movie 1 & 2, Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood, and, most recently, Dance Flick, Marlon Wayans co-wrote the script for A Haunted House along with Rick Alvarez, who has produced several Wayans family movies.

Open Road Films will release A Haunted House– which stars Marlon Wayans, Cedric the Entertainer, David Koechner, Nick Swardson, and Essence Atkins – nationwide on January 11, 2013.

Synopsis
In an outrageous send-up of the Paranormal Activity movies, The Devil Inside and other "found footage" movies, A Haunted House features young couple Malcolm (Marlon Wayans) and Kisha (Essence Atkins), who have just moved in to their dream house. As they settle in, they quickly find they’re not alone. But it’s not the house that’s haunted; it’s Malcolm’s girlfriend who is possessed by a demon. Synopsis
Texas Chainsaw 3D continues the legendary story of the homicidal Sawyer family, picking up where Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror classic left off in Newt, Texas, where for decades people went missing without a trace. The townspeople long suspected the Sawyer family, owners of a local barbeque pit, were somehow responsible. Their suspicions were finally confirmed one hot summer day when a young woman escaped the Sawyer house following the brutal murders of her four friends. Word around the small town quickly spread, and a vigilante mob of enraged locals surrounded the Sawyer stronghold, burning it to the ground and killing every last member of the family – or so they thought.

Decades later and hundreds of miles away from the original massacre, a young woman named Heather learns that she has inherited a Texas estate from a grandmother she never knew she had. After embarking on a road trip with friends to uncover her roots, she finds she is the sole owner of a lavish, isolated Victorian mansion. But her newfound wealth comes at a price as she stumbles upon a horror that awaits her in the mansion’s dank cellars…

TCA: What to Expect from Bates Motel and Da Vinci's Demons

0
0

We're still not sure how Dread-worthy Starz's "Da Vinci's Demons" is going to be, but with David Goyer at its helm, we'll keep covering it for a while at least. Here's an update from Goyer at the ongoing Television Critics Association's winter press tour along with more on A&E's "Bates Motel."

Per Deadline, Goyer said that his first historical period project would be about 85% historically accurate. “He had a pretty incredible life we didn’t have to embellish as much as you’d think,” Goyer said of Da Vinci, portrayed by Tom Reilly. Goyer pointed out that though Da Vinci is best known as an artist and scientist, he was also thought to be a great horseman. Turning Da Vinci into a TV superhero was not too difficult: “He’s kind of superhero-y anyway.

Goyer described the tone of the show as historical but “viewed through a modern prism,” like a graphic novel that's more about fun than history. He also said that there are surprising parallels between Da Vinci and Batman: “They both had big father issues and formative horrific incidents when they were trapped in caves,” he said. He also noted that Batman’s creator designed Batman’s cape based on Da Vinci’s glider designs.

Goyer added that one of the conceits of "Demons" is that thousands of pages are missing from Da Vinci’s writings and drawings, and it will speculate on what might have been included in those pages.

Synopsis:
In a world where thought and faith are controlled, one man fights to set knowledge free.

The secret history of Leonardo Da Vinci's tantalizing life reveals a portrait of a young man tortured by a gift of superhuman genius. He is a heretic intent on exposing the lies of religion. An insurgent seeking to subvert an elitist society. A bastard son who yearns for legitimacy with his father.

He finds himself in the midst of a storm that has been brewing for centuries. A conflict between truth and lies, religion and reason, past and future. His aspirations are used against him by the opposing forces of the time—luring him into a game of seduction where those who despise his intellect need him most. Leonardo must take up the fight against foes who use history to suppress the truth. A hero armed only with genius, Da Vinci stands alone against the darkness within, and the darkness without.

Facing an uncertain future, his quest for knowledge nearly becomes his undoing as he explores the fringes of his own sanity. Da Vinci throws himself into his genius and emerges as an unstoppable force that lifts an entire era out of darkness and propels it into light. His story becomes a mirror into our own world, calling us all to join his fight to Free the Future.

Starring Tom Riley (“Monroe,” I Want Candy), as the title character, “Da Vinci's Demons” is an historical fantasy, following the ‘untold’ story of the world's greatest genius during his turbulent youth in Renaissance Florence. The series also stars Laura Haddock (The Inbetweeners Movie, “Honest,” Captain America: The First Avenger), who plays the celebrated beauty with obscure motives, Lucrezia Donati; Elliot Cowan (“Marchlands,” “The Fixer,” “Lost in Austen”), who plays the shrewd de factor ruler of Florence, Lorenzo Medici; Lara Pulver (“True Blood,” “Sherlock,” “Robin Hood”), who plays his wife, Clarice Orsini; and Blake Ritson (RocknRolla, Titus, “World Without End”) as Pope Sixtus’ ruthless bastard son, Count Riario.

Tepid First Stills from Da Vinci's Demons

As for "Bates Motel,"THR attended their session in Pasadena and brought back the following info:

"We did not want to do an homage to Psycho, we wanted to take these characters and setup as inspiration," showrunner Carlton Cuse ("Lost") told reporters. "The mythology that you think is what dictates the relationship between Norma and Norman is not what it's going to turn out to be. This is a tragedy, it's a fantastic dramatic form,"Cuse said. "We want the audience to fall in love with these characters, particularly Norman. That tension of knowing what their fate is and how they get there was something we thought was really telling... The specific way in which their tragic fate plays out will be of our own invention."

The pilot reveals two mysteries involving Norman and the titular hotel -- an old notebook the teen stumbles upon that seems to tell a brutal story about a girl's torture as well as another woman chained up in what appears to be the basement of the building he and his mother buy -- that will continue to be explored, but Cuse noted it won't be a "Lost"-type mythology. "There's no supernatural elements in play. We view this as a psychological thriller."

Within this 10-episode serialized story (which, by the way, is in the present day -- complete with iPhones), could the Marion Crane character played by Janet Leigh in the Hitchcock film eventually make her way to "Bates Motel"? Cuse "didn't think" she'd appear down the line in the series -- which he envisions as having a beginning, middle, and end. "There is an endpoint to this narrative, absolutely," he said.

Star Vera Farmiga said she perceives her character as an "absolute train wreck... strong and tall as an oak and fragile as a butterfly," Her co-star Freddie Highmore said the story will challenge the audience. "We all know where he's going to end up -- but is that because of his upbringing? Is it nature vs. nurture? Or is it because they moved to this dodgy town? Or is it because of intimate relationship between Norma and Norman? If I had had the upbringing Norman had, would I have been slightly different? We all go a little mad sometimes."

"Bates Motel," starring Vera Farmiga and Freddie Highmore, serves as a contemporary prequel to the genre-defining film Psycho where fans will find a teenage Norman Bates and his beautiful mother, Norma, at the start of their journey as the owners of the famed Bates Motel.

Series Premiere Synopsis - "First You Dream, Then You Die" (3/18/13 air date):
Norma Bates buys a motel on the outskirts of an idyllic coastal town seeking a fresh start with her teenage son, the handsome and shy Norman.

Beautiful Creatures Stars and Producer Talk the Scope and Tone of the Film, Swamptronics, and More

0
0

With the February 13th release of Beautiful Creatures coming soon, we chatted with cast members Alden Ehrenreich, Thomas Mann and Zoey Deutch and producer Broderick Johnson for some inside info on the film.

Speaking with our East Coast correspondent Nomad recently, Alden Ehrenreich, who plays Ethan Wate, gave us his point of view on the scope of the film. "There are a lot of different scenes in the movie," Ehrenreich said. "Scenes that are epic, scenes that are magic. The tone of the scenes that I'm in are romantic, charming, wonderful stuff. To me, parts of this movie feels like a romantic comedy because there's really these funny things, these bumblings and failings of someone trying to date someone, trying to get to know another person."

He continued by describing the tone. "It's able to laugh at itself. It has wit, it has charm. It's a character-driven movie that has a sense of humor to it. When you see these movies about these crazy supernatural things and nobody goes, 'Whoa, wait a second,' and laughs at it for a second, that doesn't feel like what we would really do in real life. We have to laugh at this stuff."

Ehrenreich unveiled a bit on the stunts and F/X in the film. "We did very little CGI so a lot of it is the real sets, and I got to see a lot of that in person and act in that. So that was really amazing." As for the physicality of the role, "I get kind of tossed and turned and whipped; I pass out and fly around. I'm kind of the victim of all the magic in the movie so it's physical in that sense for sure."

New Character One-Sheets Show Off Lots of Beautiful Creatures

Thomas Mann talks about his part in the film, much of which involves providing the laughs. "I play Link, who is sort of the comedic relief in the movie," Mann said. "He's Ethan's best friend, and they go to the same school and are part of this small Southern, very religious town. They both feel kind of trapped, but Ethan and Link are different than everyone else. They feel they can transcend this, like there's more out there for them. The scenes with Link and Ethan are sort of light and bring some light to this dark story so I'm excited for people to see them."

But although there are laughs, Mann cautions viewers that this is no straight comedy. "There are very funny parts in it," Mann said, "but it's very dark and sort of sad, too. It's a story about two people in love and how hard it is for them to be together due to their circumstances. And there's a supernatural element; there's a lot of great special F/X and set pieces that are just crazy. A lot of the F/X are practical so it was really cool to see all that happen on set and be part of it."

And just how hands-on is Link in this film? "It is a physical role," Mann said. "Physical in a romantic way, but also physical in a violent way as well." Perfect, our two favorites!

New Character One-Sheets Show Off Lots of Beautiful Creatures

Zoey Deutch, who appears in the film as Emily Asher, gave us assurance that, oh yes, there will be blood. "Oh, there's blood involved; there's gore," Deutch said. "I get bloody with glass in my face. But the film does appeal to a wide range of people from young to adult because it's got Jeremy Irons and Emma Thompson and Viola Davis. There's so many different aspects of the story. It's a human-based story with supernatural aspects. It's really different."

New Character One-Sheets Show Off Lots of Beautiful Creatures

Finally, one of the film's producers, Broderick Johnson, talked about some special aspects of the film. "We're excited about the music," Johnson said. "We've got Thenewno2, which has Dhani Harrison (George Harrison's son) and Paul Hicks (son of Tony Hicks of The Hollies), and actually, Tony Hicks will be playing banjo in our movie. Also Jonathan Sadoff, who actually has done scores for two independent movies, but as a group they're known as Thenewno2 and they've never done a score before, but they're coming up with the most original, coolest stuff. We're recording at Abbey Road with dad's guitar. I'm really excited."

Just what kind of sound is Thenewno2 coming up with? "We're calling it Swamptronics," Johnson said. "It's a really cool sound they're creating. And the three of them have separated the duties so one works on the love theme, one works on Ridley's theme and one works on the scary stuff."

Johnson spoke on the desire to make the film magical, but without leaving reality. "There are no monsters or ghosts, but there are supernaturals," Johnson said. "I wanted to make it as real as possible and grounded in the real world. Real characters who happen to have supernatural powers, and if you take away their powers, they're just like you or me. So they have a family holiday dinner, which erupts into a disaster like all our family holiday dinners, but instead of just yelling and screaming and throwing food, they use their powers to start a fight, but if you take out their powers, it still works."

And what would any supernatural-thriller-love story be without a few laughs? "Comedy is very important. Wit is very important," Johnson said. "It cuts the earnestness and makes them real. Life has wit because life is absurd. So you can't have a story without any wit in it."

Beautiful Creatures opens nationwide on February 13th.

Synopsis:
A supernatural love story set in the South, Beautiful Creatures tells the tale of two star-crossed lovers: Ethan (Alden Ehrenreich), a young man longing to escape his small town, and Lena (Alice Englert), a mysterious new girl. Together they uncover dark secrets about their respective families, their history, and their town. Oscar nominee Richard LaGravenese (The Fisher King, P.S. I Love You) directs from his adaptation of the first novel in the best-selling series by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. The film stars Alden Ehrenreich (Tetro), newcomer Alice Englert, Academy Award winner Jeremy Irons (Reversal of Fortune) Oscar nominee Viola Davis (The Help, Doubt), Emmy Rossum (TV's "Shameless"), and Academy Award winner Emma Thompson (Howard's End, Sense and Sensibility).

Margo Martindale plays Lena's Aunt Del, who helps to protect her from the family's dark side, and Zoey Deutch portrays Emily Asher, Ethan's ex-girlfriend and the ringleader of the high school's popular clique that conspires against Lena. The film co-stars Kyle Gallner and Thomas Mann.

Synapse Bringing Lamberto Bava's Demons to American Blu-ray

Synapse Bringing Lamberto Bava's Demons to American Blu-rayThe news that Synapse Films is going to release Lamberto Bava’s cult Italian splatterfest Demons to Blu-ray sometime in 2013 is probably no big deal for our British readers since they have both Demons movies on Blu-ray, but for American fans, no more pricey import copies!

Come to think of it, probably a few US readers are irked right now because they did spend a few extra bucks importing the Demons/Demons 2 double feature Blu-ray set that was released in the UK in April of last year. Double dip, perhaps?

Synapse Films has yet to confirm any further details regarding this Blu-ray release of the 1985 Lamberto Bava-directed, Dario Argento-produced, hard rocking horror gorefest about a group of people trapped in a large West Berlin movie theater infected by ravenous demons who proceed to kill and posses the humans one-by-one, thereby multiplying their numbers. We’ll be sure to pass along the release date, tech specs, and disc extras when Synapse announces the gory details.

New Evil Dead is CGI Free

0
0

There are certain news items that break but end up taking us a while to report because we're too busy high-fiving and dancing around like happy idiots. Now that I'm finally done indulging in a vigorous session of doing The Butt with great fury, I can bring you the following...

i09 caught up with Evil Dead director Fede Alvarez and asked the magic question... How much CG is in the movie?

"We didn't do any CGI in the movie. There's no CGI in the movie. Everything you will see is real, which was really demanding. This was a very long shoot, 70 days of shooting at night. There's a reason people use CGI: it's cheaper and faster. I hate that. We researched a lot of magic tricks and illusion tricks. [Like] how you would make someone's arm disappear."

"There's a moment where a girl goes through her arm with a kitchen knife — spoiler alert. And we knew since day one the camera would start wide, she goes for the knife, you see her arm, she starts going for it. And you think they're going to cut away at any moment, but we don't. She just goes for it and screams and the arm breaks and falls. So we really pushed the boundaries there, trying to create those illusions... It has a particularly bloody ending. The last scene is just... I want it to be the bloodiest scene, ever. And I think it is."

Click here for the full interview, which includes tidbits regarding the level of violence we can expect, homages, and, yes, tree rape!

Ghost House Pictures is producing the much anticipated remake of The Evil Dead, the film that effectively launched the careers of Sam Raimi (Spider-Man franchise, Darkman, Drag Me to Hell), Rob Tapert (30 Days of Night), and Bruce Campbell, who played the Ash character and was co-producer of the original. They are now back to produce an Evil Dead for today's audience that's high on the horror, gore, plot twists, and more from a screenplay written by Fede Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues with Diablo Cody. Executive producers are J.R. Young, Nathan Kahane, Joseph Drake, and Peter Schlessel.

Related Story:Everything About the Evil Dead Remake

A core cast of young, fresh talent includes Jane Levy ("Suburgatory") as Mia; Shiloh Fernandez (Deadgirl, Red Riding Hood) as David; Lou Taylor Pucci (Carriers) as Eric; Jessica Lucas (Cloverfield) as Olivia; and Elizabeth Blackmore (Legend of the Seeker) as Natalie.

Look for the film in theatres on April 12th.

Synopsis
In the much anticipated remake of the 1981 cult-hit horror film, five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin. When they discover a Book of the Dead, they unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.

Leatherface Chainsaws His Way to the Top of the Box Office

0
0

Leatherface Chainsaws His Way to the Top of the Box OfficeThere’s still life in the ol’ chainsaw after all. The latest Leatherface reboot/sequel, Texas Chainsaw 3D, revved up the new year, taking the top spot and all but assuring many more sequels/reboots/prequels/reimaginings to come. I guess 20 really is the new 40.

Attribute it to the lack of horror movies the past few months or proof that the Texas Chainsaw Massacre name brand still has considerable value, whatever the reason, Lionsgate’s first stab at bringing the Sawyer family to the big screen overperformed with $23.3 million at the box office this weekend (including $1.2 million from Thursday night sneak previews), edging out heavy-hitting holiday holdovers Django Unchained ($20 million) and The Hobbit ($17 million). That $23.3 million puts TC3D well below the $28+ million the Platinum Dunes remake opened to but well above the Platinum Dunes prequel’s $18 million opening.

A major reason for Texas Chainsaw 3D’s success might prove quite surprising to many of you. According to Yahoo! Movies, the audience skewered heavily female, 52% female to be exact. Why are chainsaw massacres suddenly so hot with the ladies? Sorry, Leatherface, you’re not the new Magic Mike; the ladies actually turned out to see Trey Songz. One in three female moviegoers claimed the R&B/hip hop artist's co-starring turn was the primary reason they gave TC3D a go.

However, the movie didn’t overperform with mainstream and horror critics alike, who mostly ripped it to shreds in ways that would even make Leatherface squeamish, or with general audiences, who only gave it a “C+” Cinemascore, thus indicating the word of mouth is not good, and next weekend’s drop-off should be steeper than average for a second week horror flick.

Not that a big drop-off will matter that much seeing as how Lionsgate has already announced intentions to continue refueling the chainsaw. Seeing as how the deal they made for the franchise rights gives them the option of producing seven future Texas Chainsaw flicks, something tells me we’d be getting more installments regardless of how well this latest one did. Just don’t be surprised when future Leatherface massacres co-star the likes of Lupe Fiasco, Waka Flocka Flame, and Kid Cudi. Hey, maybe they can go all-out for the Pitch Perfect girlie audience by making the Texas Chainsaw Musical?

Next weekend will reveal just how huge TC3D’s drop-off will be and whether or not audiences are willing to endure the horrors of A Haunted House in order to witness a new Marlon Wayans’ comedy. Eh, more likely Gangster Squad and Zero Dark Thirty bury both of them.

TCA: NBC Still Kicking Around The Munsters

Oh, NBC, you're so fickle. Not happy with Bryan Fuller's way better than expected take on the classic television series "The Munsters" known as "Mockingbird Lane," the peacock may not be done with horror's first family yet.

I won’t say we won’t do another version of The Munsters again,” NBC chief Bob Greenblatt said after the network’s executive session at TCA. "We just decided that it didn’t hold together well enough to yield a series,” Greenblatt continued. “It looked beautiful and original and creative, but it just all ultimately didn’t come together; it just didn’t ultimately creatively all work.” The pilot featured a cast led by Jerry O’Connell as family patriarch Herman Munster, Portia de Rossi as his wife, Lily, Eddie Izzard as Grandpa, and Charity Wakefield as cousin Marilyn. “We felt great about that cast,” Greenblatt said. “But we tried to make it not just a sitcom. We tried to make it an hour, which ultimately has more dramatic weight than a half-hour. It’s hard to calibrate how much weirdness vs. supernatural vs. family story. I just think we didn’t get the mix right.

Stay tuned.

TCA: A Few Tidbits from NBC on the Upcoming Hannibal and the Returning Grimm

0
0

NBC Announces Premiere Date for Do No Harm and Return Date for GrimmMore news has come out of the ongoing Television Critics Association winter previews from NBC, including when we might finally be able to see "Hannibal," how the producers of "Grimm" are dealing with the "curse" typically associated with airing a series on Friday night, and more.

TV Guide reported from NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt's session the following regarding "Hannibal":

Greenblatt said the show could make it on the schedule before the end of the season if other midseason offerings fizzled. But he also said it could be held for summer, where it might be competitive against high-quality cable dramas. Added NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke: "It's very unique. It's like a procedural you've never seen before."

Is the network concerned about airing violent content in the wake of the Newtown school shooting? "We were all stricken as everyone was with that horrible tragedy,"Greenblatt said. "It weighs on all of us... It's always in our mind; this just brought it to the forefront."But Greenblatt, who shepherded "Dexter" at Showtime, believes the trick is how the violence is displayed. "'Criminal Minds' is worse than 'Dexter' ever was,"Greenblatt said. "There's a lot of violence around [Hannibal], but you don't see a lot of acts of violence."

As for NBC's most popular genre series, "Grimm," per Deadline, when the producers were asked how satisfied they are with the show’s 9 pm Friday time slot since there is a perceived TV industry curse that Friday night shows are doomed to fail, David Greenwalt said he “loves the time slot, it’s the old 'X-Files' time slot” and said fans are managing to find the show. Added Jim Kouf: “I don’t believe in curses so much. If they don’t watch it Friday night, they seem to watch it next Saturday.”

The pair were asked how the show manages to stand out in the glut of supernatural TV fare and how it plans to distinguish itself going forward. Said Greenwalt: “It’s a hybrid police procedural but has this whole ‘otherworld’ going on that givers us the ability to explain, in this odd and bizarre way, crime.” He added that in upcoming episodes the supernatural otherworld will “go to a macro level” and be tapped to explain “evil in the world, what is wrong with the entire world. We are seeking ways to explain it.”

“Grimm” returns on Friday, March 8th, so look for more soon!

A Much Longer Sneak Peek of What to Expect When Grimm Returns in March

0
0

A much longer look at what's in store for "Grimm" fans during the second half of the show's sophomore season (which includes a pretty great recap as well) has come in along with TV Guide's list of five things we should know before the series returns with Episode 2.13 on March 18th.

1. Rosalee is back: When actress Bree Turner gave birth to her son last fall, her character, Rosalee, took a break from the spice shop to take care of a sick aunt. "My aunt is fine now. She's healed up," Turner said.

2. The captain unmasked: Isn't it enough that Nick (David Giuntoli) found out that Renard (Sasha Roiz) was romancing his girl, Juliette (Bitsie Tulloch)? Our hero will also learn about the captain's royal background. "It's going to be a powder keg," Roiz told critics at "Grimm"'s winter TV previews on Sunday. Giuntoli added that in the "big, angry kerfuffle... he has a height advantage on me, but I have a rage advantage on him."

3. Adalind continues to annoy: "[Adalind becomes] bitchier beyond my wildest dreams," Claire Coffee said about her Hexenbiest antagonist. She also revealed that she read up on psychopaths to get into character, who has it out for Nick. To illustrate Adalind's unsentimental side, Coffee added, "She doesn't much care what happened to her cat." (The cat was killed off-screen when it was hit by a car earlier this season.)

4. Monroe confronts Renard: Nick's right-hand Wesen also uncovers the captain's Hexenbiest hybrid side.

5. Help for the lovelorn: With Rosalee's return comes hope for Juliette's unwanted passion for Renard. Turner said, "I do come back to Portland just in time... in regards to Juliette's condition and all that stuff."

"Grimm" is inspired by the classic Grimm Brothers' Fairy Tales. After Portland Homicide Detective Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli, Turn the Beat Around) discovers he's descended from an elite line of criminal profilers known as "Grimms," he increasingly finds his responsibilities as a detective at odds with his new responsibilities as a "Grimm."

With help from his confidants, Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell) and Rosalee (Bree Turner, The Ugly Truth) - both reformed Grimm creatures, Nick must help those closest to him while still facing off against all manner of ancient evils, including royal lines dating back to the original profilers themselves, the Grimm Brothers. As Nick develops his ability to harness his inner Grimm, he begins to question what he once knew.

According to the site producers Dan Lin and Roy Lee depart this week to work on several other projects as their plates are incredibly full at the moment. However, the big news is that recently director Gareth Edwards put together a show-and-tell in one of the stages on the Warner lot to walk the studio through his vision of the film, and it went well enough that they now seem committed to a March start date for the film.

Joy!

Look for the film on May 16, 2014, and keep it here for lots more in the meantime.

What if insanity were contagious and could spread like the common cold? Given the attitudes of some people in this world, you would think that is already the case, but the writers of John Carpenter's The Ward have a different spin to broadcast in Dark Feed.

Dark Feed, written, produced, and directed by Michael Rasmussen and Shawn Rasmussen, arrives on DVD, Digital Download, and Video On Demand March 19th from Lionsgate Home Entertainment.

Synopsis
A film crew moves to an abandoned psychiatric hospital with a shadowy past to shoot a low budget horror film. The late nights and lack of sleep begin to take a toll, and the longer this crew works, the more the leaky, wet building seems to be coming back to life, feeding off its new inhabitants. As the shoot wears on, members of the crew exhibit increasingly strange behavior, leaving those still sane realizing they need to get out of this place before they, too, succumb to the building’s infectious hold. The only problem—the old hospital is not ready to let them go.

Evil Dead Set Visit Report Part Three: Meet the Tortured Souls of the New Evil Dead!

0
0

One thing clearly evident from our visit to the set of the new Evil Dead in Auckland is that filmmaker Fede Alvarez made his up-and-coming cast suffer for the sake of pushing the remake into some dark and unexpectedly twisted places.

His goal is to deliver an extremely visceral movie-going experience for fans of the series. Need proof? Then look no further than the wickedly gory red band trailer released last week!

Much like he did with his original 1981 cult classic, Sam Raimi handpicked a group of relatively unknown 20-something actors for this version of Evil Dead, but this time he had help from franchise hero and fellow producer Bruce Campbell. And as anyone who has researched what went into making the original Evil Dead flicks knows, "The Chin" also suffered greatly at the hand of Raimi throughout that trio of productions.

So before production was under way last year, Raimi and Campbell set out on a search for their newest stars (or victims) and found them in five rising talents in Hollywood including Jane Levy ("Suburgatory"), Shiloh Fernandez (Deadgirl), Lou Pucci (Carriers), Elizabeth Blackmore ("Legend of the Seeker") and Jessica Lucas (Cloverfield).

In the film Levy and Fernandez play a sister and brother duo who head out to a cabin in the middle of the woods so that Levy's character, Mia, can kick her nasty drug habit. Of course, that plan begins to go straight to hell once a demonic force is unleashed through a copy of the Book of Dead discovered inside the cabin's basement, and soon the five friends must figure out a way to stop the deadly force before it swallows all their souls (a promise that the demonic force intends to make good on and is ever so fond of reminding its intended victims about through that creepy ass voice).

Related Story:Evil Dead Set Visit Report Part Two: Filmmaker Fede Alvarez, Producer Rob Tapert and More on Everything Fans Want to Know About the Remake

On Day Two we arrived at the cabin soundstage located at the production's studio, where they were filming some interior shots, which also ended up being our introduction to a few of the characters from the new Evil Dead including Mia and her brother, David (Fernandez), as well as Pucci's character, Eric; and judging by the looks of things… well, the word INTENSE certainly comes to mind. Let's just say that Eric's seen better days, and both Mia and David look like their day went into the crapper a long, long time ago.

So my curiosity was certainly piqued about their characters and what fate awaits all of them in Evil Dead. During our hour-long roundtable interview with cast members Levy, Fernandez, Pucci and Blackmore as well as Alvarez and producers Rob Tapert and J.R. Young, we left no proverbial stone unturned when it came to finding out more about the poor unfortunate souls being tortured throughout the flick.

During our roundtable interviews, we confirmed that Levy's Mia is looking to pick up the franchise hero mantle from Campbell's iconic character of Ash but of course will in no way ever take away from that character's legacy in the franchise either. We also learned that each of the actors were able to give Alvarez input into the creation of their Deadite selves and heard more about the grueling production experience which is par for the course when it comes to the Evil Dead movies, baby!

Evil Dead Set Visit Report Part Three: Meet the Tortured Souls of the New Evil Dead!

Here are some of the interview highlights with the cast of the new Evil Dead:

Journalist: How much are you guys influenced by the original's performances, if at all? Like you were saying, not a lot of people who will see this for the first time have seen the original so are you taking anything from that into this?

Shiloh Fernandez: This is pretty unique; I talked to Fede and we both had ideas we sort of matched up as to who this person was, I think. That's sort of the way I'm basing my character; it's something that Fede wrote, and when I came to him and was like, "Is it this?", he was like, "Yeah, that's it."

Journalist: You guys play a group of friends who are coming together to help someone kick heroin; did you have a lot of rehearsal time to hang out beforehand?

Lou Pucci: We organized a little vacation day before we started shooting; it was a good three-day trip where we took Easter vacation out to Coromandel, this beach. I drove everybody, and I had just learned to drive on the left side of the road like two days before so I almost killed everybody. But we really did actually get to hang out with each other for a good amount of time. Fede gave us like a week or more together because Jessica [Lucas] had a week with us, but we were here for two weeks, and I actually didn't get to meet and talk with Fede for the first week, really. That was all us; it was just us hanging out, and then we started working about a week before we started.

Also, to go with what Shiloh was just talking about, Bruce Campbell gave us an email that was just kind of like, "Don't worry about trying to copy anything that we did or trying to make it anything like what we did because what we did worked for a totally different reason than what you guys are trying to do." So I thought that was kind of cool; everybody is on the same page about us making our own characters that has nothing to do with the original characters.

Journalist: You have the prosthetics on, and I think you all have to go through that – is that the least fun part of the job, or…?

Jane Levy: It's the worst!

Lou Pucci: Yesterday... I think that was my worst day ever (laughs). And it's because I had to do all day what I'm doing just for a little bit of the day today. But it's the exact same thing: I'm covered in water right now and wearing mesh under this and knee pads and shit that doesn't let water out. And I was just sleeping, but that's usually not, well, enjoyed because I have these fucking contacts in that are– you can't even see. It's the worst thing in the world.

Evil Dead Set Visit Report Part Three: Meet the Tortured Souls of the New Evil Dead!

Jane Levy: I was saying before, though, in a way it's like… I wouldn't call it a good thing, but sometimes I don't really have to act. I'm actually freezing cold, and I'm so tired that I'm crying because I'm so cold and I want to go home. Really, just like my character, so you know, it makes the job easier sometimes, a little bit more real.

Elizabeth Blackmore: I think I almost still don't know; it's so different being in it, having it as a concept and then understanding what it actually looks like. It's so much blood, and it's so much stuff going on, that you just kind of... I have no idea what it's going to look like. I have no idea.

Lou Pucci: The level of violence is going to have so much to do with how you like the characters, or see the characters, whether you want them to die or want them to live, because it'll be way more scary if you like them, and that's kind of what I think we're going for.

Jane Levy: But this is also an extremely physical job, and just like what Fede was saying, we're doing everything that you see. I don't know how much I'm allowed to give away, but at one point I vomit all over somebody. A lot of vomit. Like, a shit-ton of fluid. I had a tube practically down my throat, and I'm on top of this girl and vomiting all over her. When you actually do something like that – I don't think I can actually describe the sensation – but I actually went to the corner and cried. I'm really sensitive. But I felt like I was really drowning my friend Jessica; it felt so bad. I was shaking.

Lou Pucci: Jessica took it like a champion.

Jane Levy: It got up her nose, it was coming out of everywhere, and she stood right up and was like, "Yep, let's do it again!" And I was in the corner crying. It's really violent. When we were in the audition room, Bruce especially was like, "Do you know what it's like to be buried alive? Do you know what it feels like?" And, of course, I wanted the job so I was like, "Yeah yeah yeah, bring it on!" And then you do it. It's hard, but like I said, you'll see it in the movie. I think it'll reflect on our performances. It's as real as you can get without actually hurting each other.

Journalist: What were your thoughts when you first took a look at the script?

Lou Pucci:I think I personally went to that first audition… I didn't even read the whole thing because, I mean, I knew Evil Dead. It's one of my favorite movies. So I was a little freaked out about remaking that. But part of it also had to do with finding out that they were trying to do it practically. Like, doing it with prosthetics. I thought that was the coolest idea in the entire world. And so that brought me to the next part of it, where really, I went to that second audition and I was like, "Oh my god, even if I don't get this, which I'm not really planning on, I get to meet Bruce Campbell!"

So I went in there and had the best audition, just hanging out with him. It was so cool. He made me feel really comfortable and all that kind of stuff, which was nice. But my original idea from the script was, "I don't know how the fuck they're going to do this. I don't know what it's going to look like. I don't know how campy it'll look or seem or be, or whether it be campy at all or just real." So honestly, from what it is now, I could never have expected what it is and what it would have been.

Evil Dead Set Visit Report Part Three: Meet the Tortured Souls of the New Evil Dead!

Journalist: How do you think the fanbase of the original film is going to react to the remake?

Lou Pucci: I think half of them are going to love it and half of them are going to hate it, and so they'll talk about it. Because I mean, really, it takes some of the best things from the old one, but it also gives some totally new ideas on it. I mean, you don't care anything about those original characters at all. Some people love that you don't, though, and some people would rather follow an actual story. And that's what this is. So I mean, it's going to have something for a very new audience and something for the old audience.

Journalist: What are your takes on your characters?

Jane Levy:Mia is trying to survive. She's like a damaged young girl who's trying to kick an addiction and trying to survive that. And then it turns into trying to survive some other things, and this is like her time to do it.

Journalist: Did you do any research into addicts for this?

Jane Levy:I did… I did, yeah. But I think that part of the story is actually kind of small. Like that gets you there, that gets you into this environment, and I think from the very beginning Mia has made the decision that she's going to be healthy so she's not using drugs at all in this movie. It's like, withdrawal starts the minute the movie starts, and then she has to live.

Journalist: Do you think her wanting to kick the drug habit ties in to her wanting to survive so badly?

Jane Levy:Totally. Totally. And the demons might be her own demons; you know, there's a play on that in the movie, and that's what it's about for her.

Journalist: What is the most taxing scene that your character had to endure? Or that you have had to endure for your character?

Jane Levy: I could name ten of the most horrible things that could ever happen to you in your whole life, and all of those ten things happen to this character. It's like a horror of all horror films. It is extreme, and that's a lot of the reason I took this project on. I thought why not do the most extreme movie possible? And the farthest from what I've been doing for the past year.

Evil Dead Set Visit Report Part Three: Meet the Tortured Souls of the New Evil Dead!

Journalist: What was one scene that was most challenging for you as an actress?

Jane Levy:Probably… honestly, it's different. There's physical and emotional, and that's what makes this part also so crazy… not only am I… I don't want to give too much away, but not only am I emotionally going through withdrawals, heroin withdrawal, which is really intense, I'm also being attacked by evil spirits. I think the hardest was actually just the dramatic stuff, which was emotional. And then physically, you know, I'm in prosthetics for six hours, and I have blood dripped all over my head, in my underwear. I'm literally wearing my underwear in the freezing cold rain and barfing on people and… you know, lots of stuff. I don't want to give anything away.

Journalist: Have you done the 'swallow this' scene yet?

Jane Levy:No. That's all coming up. In the next three weeks we're doing night shoots, and it will be raining blood the whole time, and we will be outside in the middle of the night, and I'm going to kick some ass.

Journalist: Was there some pressure on you to deliver that line? Since it's such a big line.

Jane Levy:Which one?

Journalist: 'Swallow this, motherfucker.'

Jane Levy:No, I'm so excited. Like you said before, how much of the performance are we taking from the originals? And at first my first instinct was to say zero, but that's not true. There's like little moments throughout the movie where that are direct lines, and it's so fun to be able to do it. You know what I took the most from? Watching the Evil Dead outtakes from the original where I hear Rob's voice saying, "Take [number] whatever!" So I took stuff from watching that actually.

Journalist: Can you talk a little bit about the scene you were shooting last night, where Shiloh is telling you to run, and he's locking you in the cabin?

Jane Levy:Yeah, I think a lot of this movie is based on our relationship between the brother and the sister. They've had a broken relationship, they haven't talked for a few years, and you don't know if it was Mia's idea or if it was one of the friends' ideas, but in order to kick this habit, maybe I also have to mend this relationship with my brother. He's the only family I have, and I need him to get through this horrible thing. And again, that expands into the supernatural. But our relationship and healing the wounds there makes it necessary for me to survive.

Journalist: Have you ever done anything like this at all? Anything in the horror genre?

Elizabeth Blackmore:Never. I mainly come from the world of theater so I've been doing Shakespeare and Chekhov, you know, living in a completely different dimension. I'm also from Australia, so working on Australian films is very different. Like, different budget-wise, different… I mean, this is like nothing, nothing I've ever done in my life ever and it's been insane.

And I think we're really lucky that it's not CGI, that it is all this prosthetic stuff. I mean, I wouldn't have said that two weeks ago; I kind of was hating life back then. But getting to cut my arm off, it's amazing. And it can only help your performance. Rather than cutting a green sleeve or something- like I cut my arm off and it was amazing. There was blood everywhere, and when do you get to do that, you know?

Evil Dead Set Visit Report Part Three: Meet the Tortured Souls of the New Evil Dead!

Journalist: Is there any self-awareness here?

Elizabeth Blackmore:The world doesn't really exist. It's just like the cabin…

Executive Producer J.R. Young:From the very beginning, Sam always said that you want it to feel timeless. When you made the original, you wanted that one to feel timeless, and that's been the same approach for Fede going into this one to make it work. This could have been 30 years ago, it could be 10 years from now.

Elizabeth Blackmore:There's no iPhones or laptops or anything like that.

Journalist: Talk about the differences in your performance when you're a person or a Deadite.

Jane Levy:Well, it's something I spent a lot of time thinking about. It's something I still think about and stress over because we've seen possessed people a lot of times in movies, and as an actor you're always interested in trying something new. I didn't want to mimic anything and I really wanted to be fucking scary.

And thinking about being scary is as daunting as thinking about being funny; those are things that you shouldn't be thinking about. You can't be aware of it, or it's not going to work. So we had a couple of sessions with a movement coach who talked about body stuff and doing certain things with your body and…[laughs] no yeah, it was great and just gave us ideas to work with. But I actually chose to humanize my Deadite a little bit, and I hope that turns out to be scary. I tried not to do much of spider crawling up wall, psycho body contortion just because I wanted… I guess I wanted to try something new, and I also thought, and Fede thinks, that the idea of there being a human quality is almost scarier. I have yet to see it so I hope it works.

Journalist: How does that thought process work into the scenes where you play against yourself?

Jane Levy:Well, I haven't done that yet- playing against myself. But I've always tried to add a little bit of a quality like Mia's sort of aware, like somehow deep inside Mia's inside watching own self torture people, which seems like a really fucked up thought. And I guess… I don't know, I don't know how to answer about playing against yourself…

Journalist: Well, you were talking about how she's a drug addict; is that similar to how drug addicts look at themselves in a mirror? Is that kind of what those scenes represent?

Jane Levy:I think so, yeah, definitely. Again, I haven't shot them yet, but you know, films are crazy. Like you're looking at a wall and you're imagining… it's a green screen and you're imagining the world exploding or something. I don't know yet how it's going to be fighting my own demon (laughs).

After we wrapped up our interviews, we spent the remainder of our set visit back at the soundstage for more chaos in the cabin and then eventually headed off, back to our hotels, which concluded my time on the Evil Dead set. I was fortunate enough to spend another 22 hours in Auckland, which allowed me some time to go sightseeing with two of my fellow journalists who were kind enough to let me tag along. We roamed the streets of Auckland, visited the waterfront, spent some time checking out the almost 200-year-old headstones in this great little cemetery in the center of town and capped the whole thing off drinking homemade rum at a local bar/liquor store.

Honestly, it was probably one of the coolest things I've ever had the pleasure of being a part of, and that's not just the trip to New Zealand I'm talking about here. As a journalist, you see a lot of 'razzle dazzle' on set visits where you can tell everyone's on their best behavior because press was in the room, but this was different. This was all unabashed passion to make a great horror movie for the fans. There was no sales pitch; it was all heart with this crew, and seeing that kind of passion was a rather incredible experience- and that's why I really feel grateful for this experience. I do this job as a fan of filmmaking first and foremost so when I see the right people making the right movie for the right reasons, it gives me a lot of enthusiasm so I hope that has showed in my coverage from the set.

And here's hoping everyone involved with Evil Dead can live up to their promises- I know I'm downright giddy with anticipation to see what they can deliver this April based on everything I've seen so far!
