B-Sides: Killer Klowns from Outer Space

$

Sometimes a great cheesy theme song is all it takes to elevate a b-movie to true cult status. When your movie is called Killer Klowns from Outer Space, cult status is already all but assured. Adding a rocking theme song by a classic punk band like The Dickies is just the cherry on top of a delicious b-movie sundae.

I don’t think you need me to tell you anything about Killer Klowns from Outer Space. You’ve either seen it or you haven’t. You either love it or hate. Either or, the Chiodo Brothers’ 1988 homage to 1950’s alien invasion movies about homicidal harlequins from another galaxy invading a small town in their big top UFO to kidnap the townsfolk they then keep inside cotton candy cocoons for later consumption through a super bendy straw is a true cult classic, and this song by The Dickies is one of the many reasons why.

Here’s a B-Sides that is far too long overdue: The Dickies’ original music video for the title track to Killer Klowns from Outer Space.

Texas Frightmakers: Interview with Matthan Harris

Texas is a strange, strange place. Most horror fans think about chainsaws when you say the name Texas around them, and that's not a huge stretch from the truth. Bigger than many nations, Texas contains every variety of landscape and community found elsewhere in the US. It also contains no small amount of weirdness and weirdos. Inspired by the Texas Frightmakers panels at last year's Texas Frightmare Weekend as well as my love for my adopted home, I'm proud to introduce a series of monthly interviews called Texas Frightmakers.

I'll be speaking with horror folks from all over the state and all aspects of horror. The genre is thriving in Texas, with horrors of every shape and kind popping up all over the state. It's my hope that you'll discover some people you otherwise wouldn't and come to appreciate Texas for the horror hotbed that it is.

Texas Frightmakers: Interview with Matthan Harris

To kick things off, I bring you a conversation with Matthan Harris. One of my discoveries at last year's TFW was that a horror film had just wrapped in Dallas starring Bill Moseley, Doug Bradley, and Sid Haig. I live here and had no idea this was even going on, which is a travesty. The film is The Infliction, and it's the product of the twisted imagination of Harris, who wrote, produced, directed, and stars in the film.

Mr. Dark: Tell us a little bit about The Infliction.

Matthan Harris: The Infliction is about a young serial killer named David O'Hara. On the surface David is a normal 25-year-old medical student. However, he has a dark side, which he inherited from his father, Richard O'Hara (played by Bill Moseley). David kidnaps young women in pursuit of the perfect female to produce his child. If he deems the victim unworthy of motherhood, he kills her. He eventually chooses his college friend, Melissa Daniels, and impregnates her against her will. All kinds of mayhem ensue when the police rescue her from David's isolated warehouse.

MD: This is your feature debut. What made you decide to write, direct, produce, AND play the lead?

MH: That's how I made all of my short films so I'm used to wearing many hats at the same time. It's a highly stimulating approach to filmmaking, and it grants me the most creative control. In order to wear all those hats, you need to be able to think on your feet, stay focused in high-stress situations, and pay close attention to detail. As for my acting, my brilliant director of photography, Cira Felina Bolla, directed me whenever necessary.

MD: What attracted you to this story as your first feature? Why a serial killer tale?

MH: I had a few concepts for my first feature, all of which were horror, but The Infliction was the most intriguing to me. The story is very complex and psychological, and it deals with many real-life issues that people can relate to. One of the major themes is "Everyone has a dark side," and it fascinates me that certain people embrace it while everyone else suppresses it. The Infliction tells the story of a young sociopath who thinks creating a family will fix everything that went wrong in his life. But is it possible for a sociopath to love someone, even his own child? If not, then what happens in that situation? These are some of the questions that inspired me to write this story. Plus, I've always wanted to play a serial killer so I got to fulfill that dream.

MD: You have some serious horror star power in this film with Doug Bradley, Sid Haig, and Bill Moseley. Any worries about hiring such vets on your first time out of the gate? How did they handle being directed by someone so young?

MH: As you can imagine, I was very excited when those icons liked my script and agreed to do the film. As Bill Moseley told me, "It's easier to act when the script is good!" I've admired their work since I was a kid and wrote those roles for them so it couldn't have worked out better. They were very respectful, despite me being 24 years old, and they took the project very seriously. I suppose it was a risky move, but I wasn't too worried because I was well-prepared and experienced by that point. Plus, I had an incredible cast and crew. Giovanni Lombardo Radice told me, "It is important to support young filmmakers." Without that support, I wouldn't have been able to make The Infliction.

Texas Frightmakers: Interview with Matthan Harris

MD: Where are you on the film right now? I believe you said primary photography was completed; do you have a release date yet?

MH: Editing is almost finished; and then music, sound mixing, and color correction will need to be done. I would like to premiere the film as early as April, but we'll see.

MD: How did you discover the film's heroine, Lindsay Hightower? I know she's local to Dallas - did you do standard casting calls, or did you discover her another way?

MH: I did not do casting calls for the principal roles. I mainly selected Dallas actors I had trained with, including Amy Amory, who introduced me to Lindsay Hightower. Lindsay had the right look to play Melissa Daniels so I set up an audition with her. She impressed me with her emotional range and edginess so she got the role. Lindsay did several challenging scenes, including rape and attempted suicide, and she was a real trooper throughout the whole shoot.

MD: You're a Texas native, but what kept you in Texas to make The Infliction? Why not run to Canada and all of its tax breaks or LA with all of the resources available there?

MH: There are several reasons why I stayed in Texas to shoot The Infliction. I already knew the local talent so casting was fairly easy. All of the locations were close together and granted us privacy from onlookers. Weather conditions were excellent. Traffic and parking weren't an issue. Texas has very competitive prices, and all expenses for film production are tax-exempt. Basically, staying on my home turf was the most convenient choice for this project. I'm ready for my next one, though, and I will be moving to LA next month. Wish me luck!

MD: My traditional last question: what's your favorite horror movie?

MH: Oh god, that's a hard question! I love so many horror movies from Alien to Dead Alive to Psycho. But if I had to choose one, it would be Jaws. That film taps so effectively into people's fear of sharks, nature, and the unknown. It leaves quite a bit to the imagination, which allows the audience to create these horrific images in their mind. When the Kintner boy is attacked and a geyser of blood squirts everywhere... that's true horror. I always think of Jaws when I go snorkeling or scuba-diving, which is a testament to its power.

Thanks, Matthan! You can follow the progress of The Infliction here on Dread Central and the official The Infliction Facebook page, where you'll find lots more photos and behind-the-scenes peeks. Be sure to check out the trailer and one-sheet below, and keep your eyes peeled (not literally...eww) for the next Texas Frightmaker this time next month and every month from me, Mr. Dark, on the finest spot for horror in the world: DREAD CENTRAL!

WonderCon 2012Some of you may not know that the San Diego Comic-Con has a little sister known as WonderCon, which is typically held in San Francisco, but this year things are going to be a bit different. Due to renovation work taking place at Moscone Center South, the Con's usual home, the powers-that-be have opted to relocate it to the Anaheim Convention Center for its 2012 run of March 16th-18th rather than cancel or postpone it.

Right now the guest list is mostly geared toward comics fans (Yay! A real "comic" con!), but if last year is any indication, things should start cooking soon with more movie and TV show panels and guests sure to be added. The horror highlights thus far:

Joe Hill - author, Locke and Key, Heart-Shaped Box
Mike Mignola - writer/artist/creator, Hellboy, B.P.R.D.
Steve Niles - writer/creator, 30 Days of Night, Criminal Macabre, Mystery Society
Eric Powell - writer/artist/creator, The Goon
Marv Wolfman - writer/editor, Blade, the Vampire Hunter, Tomb of Dracula
Bob Schreck - editor-in-chief, Legendary Comics

Keep it here for updates, and for more info in the meantime, visit the official WonderCon website.

Last Exorcism Sequel Gearing Up for Production with a Director and Start Date

Last Exorcism Sequel Gearing Up for Production with a Director and Start DateWe already knew Ashley Bell would be back for the sequel to The Last Exorcism, and now comes word as to who will be behind the camera barking contortion orders to her: Ed Gass-Donnelly (This Beautiful City, Small Town Murder Songs) has been tapped to direct the R-rated follow-up to the 2010 PG-13 film.

Per Deadline, Eli Roth returns as well, producing via Arcade Pictures, with Eric Newman, Marc Abraham, and Tom Bliss producing via Strike Entertainment. Studiocanal will fully finance and kick off international sales at the European Film Market in Berlin next month.

The sequel is said to pick up three months after the original left off, but of course further details are being kept under wraps. Production is set to begin in February in New Orleans, and delivery is expected for late 2012.

Roth says he’s “very, very excited to continue to this story. Obviously with the title of the first one, we had not planned on a sequel, but we love the story and subject matter and had what we feel is an inspired idea to continue it. As you can see from other recent films, fans around the world are fascinated by this subject matter, and we want to go deeper and darker this time. The first film worked great as a PG-13 psychological film, but now we want to go R-rated and show the true horror of what this subject matter offers. The biggest creative challenge will be coming up with the right title!

Newman says, “On behalf of the producing team, we are excited to put the next installment of Nell’s story in the capable hands of Ed Gass-Donnelly. His naturalistic style and performance-based filmmaking make him the perfect choice.

Studiocanal EVP of international distribution, Harold Van Lier, adds, “We are horrified to bring to the marketplace the eagerly awaited sequel to our 2010 worldwide hit. This much bigger scale movie will unravel a profoundly scarier chapter to Nell’s battle between good and evil. God have mercy.

Universal Cooks Up Thirteen Ways to Scare UsFound footage. With low budget success stories for the bigger studios, this medium is here to stay. Now Universal is looking to tap into the same vein of gold that others have with the new flick, Thirteen.

According to Variety, Universal has pre-emptively bought Thirteen, a spec by Benjamin Magid, and set it up with Uni-based Strike Entetrainment and Brooklyn Weaver at Energy Entertainment.

Veteran production exec Kristel Laiblin brought the project into Strike's Eric Newman and will oversee. Thirteen centers on possession and is understood to utilize a mixture of found-footage point of views. The story is reminiscent of 1990's Flatliners, which starred Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland as medical school students experimenting with the line between life and death.

Fourth Underworld Reawakens the Box Office

Fourth Underworld Reawakens the Box OfficeUnderworld continues to be one of the most inexplicable franchises out there – like the Resident Evil movies – in that the films in the series are not highly regarded, nothing about the films has achieved any real notoriety within the pop culture lexicon, they never even seem to inspire great enthusiasm even amongst their most loyal fans, and yet they consistently open to solid box office.

The combination of Kate Beckinsale once again slithering around in tight black fetish wear and vampires fighting werewolves in 3D took Underworld: Awakening to the top of the box office this weekend with an estimated $25 million, according to Deadline Hollywood, which is actually up from the opening of the previous Beckinsale-less threequel prequel Underworld: Rise of the Lycans. Don’t be surprised if Sony/Screen Gems announce a fifth Underworld flick very shortly.

Meanwhile, The Devil Inside… Ah, who cares at this point? The best found footage exorcism flick not titled The Last Exorcism is well out of the top ten and still poised to ends its domestic theatrical run at around $50 million minus whatever the cost is to clean off the dried food hurled at the screens around the country.

Next week: Liam Neeson fist fights the hungry wolves that have kidnapped his teenage daughter in The Grey.

New Thanatomorphose One-Sheet Conjures Vaginal Overtones

Vaginas. Who doesn't love them? With this latest one-sheet for the indie flick Thanatomorphose all we can think about are vaginas. Seriously, whatever it is I think I see, becomes a vagina to me.

From the Pres Release
THANATOFILMS, a subsidiary of Les productions Outofnowhere inc., and BLACK FLAG PICTURES proudly present the official poster for director Éric Falardeau’s independently produced dark tale of sex and gore Thanatomorphose.

The poster has been made by graphic artist Marc Boisclair who has previously worked with director Éric Falardeau on Thanatomorphose’s marketing artwork.

Marc explains : For Thanatomorphose, Éric wanted to use a different approach than traditional film posters. In fact, the concept wouldn’t contain any shots taken from the movie nor any actor pictures. The real star would be that crack in the wall – similar to the one found in the film – representing the evolution of the physical and psychological distress of the main character. The image had to be highly-textured and inspired by the “body horror” period of the 80s. So I took care of highlighting the dreary aspect of the film while staying halfway between illustration and realism.»

Thanatomorphose stars Kayden Rose, Davyd Tousignant, Émile Beaudry, Karine Picard, Roch-Denis Gagnon, Éryka L. Cantieri, Pat Lemaire and Simon Laperrière.

The Thanatomorphose website features a link to the official production blog hosted by famous horror culture French website SINISTRE MAG. The blog covers all aspects of the production from pre-production to distribution. It is a unique window on the business of producing and directing an independent fright flick. Production stills and short videos also put the viewers directly into the production process.

Thanatomorphose is a french word meaning the visible signs of an organism’s decomposition caused by death. The synopsis goes as follow: One day, a young and beautiful girl a wakes up and finds her flesh rotting…

Richard Stanley Joins The Profane Exhibit

We've been following the progress of upcoming anthology film The Profane Exhibit pretty closely around these parts, and now that word has come that Richard Stanley (Hardware, Dust Devil, The Theatre Bizarre) has joined the team, we're even more excited!

From the Press Release
Richard Stanley joins The Profane Exhibit with a segment entitled "Coltan", which is an unflinching look into darkest Africa, where human life is traded for fortune and the most unspeakable atrocities are committed. In addition, Stanley's segment will be scored by award-winning composer Simon Boswell.

Also joining producers David Bond and Manda Manuel's The Profane Exhibit is horror novelist Ray Garton, who is creating the novella that will serve as the wraparound story in the film.

Deep within the underbelly of Paris there is a club which is the home of a secret, wicked society. At first it resembles an ordinary fetish or Goth nightclub, but inside the cavernous building are many hidden rooms, one of which is known as “The Room of Souls,” a private gathering place of the world’s richest and most evil people. Their host is the elegant yet frightening Madame Sabatier. For their amusement each member takes a turn and spins a true tale of depravity:

  • A good wife learns that her husband goes out at night to abduct and murder young women
  • A botched suicide attempt leads to a drug-induced dream
  • A girl is believed to be possessed by a demon, and her overly religious parents enlist the help of a corrupt reverend who has his own sinister plans
  • We are invited inside the deranged mind of a respected surgeon as he takes us on a guided tour of life, death, and everything in between
  • A young street prostitute crosses paths with a charismatic flesh trader and is forced to take an unspeakable journey of sex, violence, and murder
  • A nun is abducted off the streets of Rome and held captive for over a year, turning her into a feral, murderous creature to be unleashed on society
  • A chance encounter on a fateful bus ride for an unsuspecting girl who dreams of riches and fame is her undoing
  • A man picks up a woman in a nightclub and soon finds himself at the mercy of a cult of women who believe consumption of their sacrifice will bring them to their highest form of female dominance
  • It truly is a profane world, and this is THE PROFANE EXHIBIT. There are no boundaries.

Ciarán O’Shea, the handsome though washed up policeman of sleepy Erin Island, has a daily routine consisting mainly of hanging out at the pub with the local drunks and various other charmingly eccentric characters. But his day is about to go horribly wrong.

Teamed up with the unwanted help of Lisa – an uptight workaholic policewoman from the Irish mainland – they suddenly find themselves dealing with dead whales, decapitated fishermen, and weird alien creatures or “grabbers”. Like a giant squid with tentacles, fanged jaws, and a three-foot barbed tongue, they’re making mincemeat of the locals.

Faced with another imminent attack, O’Shea and Lisa figure out that the sole person to survive the last onslaught only did so because he was so drunk his blood was literally toxic to the monsters. So there is only one thing for it: They have to get the entire village as drunk as possible in order to survive the night ... a task that the villagers apply themselves to with gusto.

But one person must remain sober so for the first time in years O’Shea has to face up to things without a drink. When things don’t go to plan, an extremely drunk Lisa and a very sober O’Shea have to reconcile their differences and somehow save the day.

Da Vinci's Demons Ready to Practice Their Evil with Tom RileyHorror and history are once again getting ready to collide but this time with some artistic flair! A leading man has been found for the new series "Da Vinci's Demons", and we've got your details right here.

According to Variety, British thespian Tom Riley (A Few Days in September, I Want Candy, Happy Ever Afters) will play Leonardo Da Vinci in the Starz skein "Da Vinci's Demons." The show is being co-produced with BBC Worldwide Productions, and Riley's role is the first casting for the series.

"Given that Da Vinci was the model for the 'Renaissance Man', these were incredibly large shoes to fill," says writer David Goyer. "Leonardo had to be smart, witty, and incredibly confident -- without coming across as arrogant. He also had to be tormented because, as a true visionary and polymath, he was ostracized for his ideas as much as he was celebrated. Tom came in and was able to effortlessly combine all of those elements. As soon as he finished his audition, we knew we'd found our man."

And the World War Z hype wheel keeps right on spinning. This time co-star Mireille Enos ("The Killing", "Big Love"), who plays the wife of Brad Pitt's character in the upcoming adaptation, sat down with E! Online and dropped some pretty interesting remarks about the film and the possibility of it being a trilogy.

"It was [going to be] from the beginning," says Enos of the plan to have two more films after this. "That was the hope, that if the first one turned out the way we all anticipate, that it would be great to turn it into a trilogy. It's exciting."

    Adding ...

"It's like zombies are the new vampires. It's taking over. But somebody said to me this movie might end the zombie genre because, after this, what else is there to do? It's huge!"

End the sub-genre? Has nobody ever told her that you can't keep a good ghoul down? Especially with a PG-13 rating.

The novel is set 10 years after a global zombie epidemic and is an oral history told from many perspectives around the world. Brad Pitt is playing a U.N. worker gathering stories of the great zombie war, and his Plan B shingle is producing. Mireille Enos ("Big Love", "The Killing") will play his wife, a mother of two girls, and Anthony Mackie co-stars.

Look for the Marc Forster-directed adaptation of the Max Brooks zombie infestation novel World War Z in theatres on December 21st, 2012.
