The Following: Meet Joe Carroll and Claire Matthews

In "The Following" serial killer Joe Carroll (James Purefoy) and his ex-wife, Claire Matthews (Natalie Zea), form two sides of a convoluted love triangle with former FBI agent Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon). Go inside the minds of these former spouses as we await the January 21st premiere of the show.

Synopsis:
THE FBI estimates there are currently over 300 active serial killers in the United States. What would happen if these killers had a way of communicating and connecting with each other? What if they were able to work together and form alliances across the country? What if one brilliant psychotic serial killer was able to bring them all together and activate a following? Welcome to THE FOLLOWING, the terrifying new thriller from creator/executive producer Kevin Williamson (“The Vampire Diaries,” “Dawson’s Creek,” the Scream franchise) and director Marcos Siega (“The Vampire Diaries,” “Dexter”).

When notorious serial killer JOE CARROLL (James Purefoy, “Rome”) escapes from death row and embarks on a new killing spree, the FBI calls former agent RYAN HARDY (Emmy-nominated actor Kevin Bacon, X-Men: First Class) to consult on the case. Having since withdrawn from the public eye, Hardy was responsible for Carroll’s capture nine years ago, after Carroll murdered 14 female students on the Virginia college campus where he taught literature. Hardy is a walking textbook of all-things Carroll. He knows him better than anyone; he is perhaps Carroll’s only psychological and intellectual match. But the Ryan Hardy who broke the Carroll case years ago isn’t the same man today. Wounded both physically and mentally by his previous pursuit of this serial killer, it’s been a long time since Hardy has been in the field. This investigation is his redemption, his call to action. In contrast to nine years ago, Hardy isn’t calling the shots on this case. He works closely with an FBI team, which includes young, razor-sharp MIKE WESTON (Shawn Ashmore, X-Men).

The team considers Hardy to be more of a liability than an asset. But Hardy proves his worth when he uncovers that Carroll was covertly communicating with a network of killers in the outside world. It quickly becomes obvious that he has more planned than just a prison escape, and there’s no telling how many additional killers are out there. The FBI’s investigation leads Hardy to CLAIRE MATTHEWS (Natalie Zea, “Justified”), Carroll’s ex-wife and mother of the criminal’s 10-year-old son, JOEY (newcomer Kyle Catlett). Close during Hardy’s initial investigation, Hardy turns to Claire for insight into Carroll’s next move. The tension rises when Carroll’s accomplices kidnap his intended last victim from nine years ago. Hardy becomes ever more determined to end Carroll’s game when he realizes that this psychopath intends to finish what he started. The thriller will follow Hardy and the FBI as they are challenged with the ever-growing web of murder around them, masterminded by the devious Carroll, who dreams of writing a novel with Hardy as his protagonist. The reinvigorated Hardy will get a second chance to capture Carroll, as he’s faced with not one but a cult of serial killers.

Lookout, London! Gorgo is Marching to Blu-ray!

Seeing as how we may very well be just a few short months away from a new boom in giant monster cinema, it should come as no surprise to see more and more classic kaiju flicks like Gorgo getting the hi-def treatment.

Britain’s answer to Godzilla, Gorgo first stomped her way onto the big screen back in 1971. The final directorial effort from Eugene Lourie (The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, The Colossus of New York, and The Giant Behemoth) starred Bill Travers, William Sylvester, and Vincent Winter and featured top-notch special effects by two-time Oscar winner Tom Howard.

Though the MGM production would prove a one-off, the ear-wiggling reptilian titan managed to spawn a 23-issue comic book by Charleton Comics and remains one of the most respected giant monster movie offerings from the golden age of creature features.

A volcanic eruption in the North Atlantic brings to the surface a 65-foot prehistoric monster. Two treasure divers capture the creature and take him to London, where he is put on display in a circus. A scientist is thoughtful enough to point out that the sailors’ bonanza is only an infant and that a full-grown specimen would be over 200 feet in height. Sure enough, Gorgo's mama comes thundering ashore, reclaims her offspring, and heads back to sea - but not before she trashes a generous portion of London.

VCI Entertainment is set to release a newly restored HD transfer of Gorgo on both DVD (anamorphic) and – for the first time ever – on Blu-ray (HD 1080p) March 19th. Both versions will come fully loaded with extras:

  • "Ninth Wonder Of The World: The Making Of Gorgo" a new documentary by Daniel Griffith
  • Gorgo - Video Comic Book and Comic Book Cover Gallery
  • Extensive Lobby Card & Poster Gallery
  • Photo Gallery
  • Gorgo Toys & Collectibles Gallery
  • Production Notes
  • Original Theatrical Trailer
  • Pressbook Gallery
  • Star Ciné Cosmos - French-language "fumetto" (comic book)
  • Before & After Restoration Video

  • Exclusive: Don Coscarelli on John Dies at the End, His Unconventional Career and More

Exclusive: Don Coscarelli on John Dies at the End, His Unconventional Career and MoreMaster of Horror Don Coscarelli has always been one to march to the beat of his own drum, and his latest film, John Dies at the End, is a perfect representation of the iconic director's unique storytelling approach that he has seemed to embrace throughout his near 35-year long career.

At a recent press day for John Dies, Dread Central had the opportunity to speak with Coscarelli exclusively about his latest genre-bending effort and heard more about the pressure of finding the right leads for the project, what aspects of novelist David Wong's original story he really responded to the first time he picked up the book and why it is he really relates to the younger generations of horror fans out there.

Check out our exclusive interview with Coscarelli below, and look for more on John Dies at the End soon in anticipation of its limited theatrical release on January 25th (it's currently available on VOD).

Dread Central: Thanks so much again Don for chatting with me again about John Dies, especially since now I've gotten to see it. I really loved these guys- Chase and Rob- and was wondering if you could talk about having to cast those roles and what made them right for their respective characters.

Don Coscarelli:Oh sure; You know, until I found those guys it really was the most terrifying part of the whole process of making John Dies because if I couldn’t find the perfect actors for those roles, there’d be no movie to make. But then on the second day of casting, Chase came in and he was so new; he'd been to like one or two auditions and he had just had graduated from drama school even. But he was a natural; he fell right into that role (Dave) and everything he does in this movie was right there during that first audition. I pretty much had him cast after that first meeting.

And when I had Chase audition, he did a reading of the narration and as I sat there listening to him, all I could think was, “Wow, I think this movie could actually be really good” (laughs). But that was my 'moment'- or at least my first 'moment.'

Casting Rob as John was almost the same situation as it was with Chase; he had never done a movie before but I just knew he could get it done. He didn't seem like the kind of guy who was going to buckle under any pressure and Rob really hit every note of John's character just perfectly. On his first day, Rob had eight pages of dialogue against Paul (Giamatti) but I think I ended up being more nervous about it than he was (laughs).

Dread Central: I know this is the first time you've directed material that wasn't your own but I can certainly see from a fan perspective why you were the right guy to tackle John Dies. So can you discuss what it was about David's story that you felt like this was perfect material for you- what did you respond to most?

Don Coscarelli:It's an unusual story and I think those are always the stories that I respond to, or at least the stories I've always liked to tell which is probably the biggest reason why I've always stayed independent throughout my career. I like unusual stories and John Dies has everything from inter-dimensional travel to meat monsters to talking dogs to an addictive drug, Soy Sauce, that's kind of like its own character too- it's practically alive because it chooses you. And all of those fantastical elements seemed like great material to make into a movie.

But at the same time John Dies also has some big ideas to it too- questions about reality and perception- what’s real and what’s not- and fate where you have all these amazing dialogue moments for these characters which is another thing I always respond to. I thought David really put some incredible perspective to this story where it felt a little different but it also felt very current and that was something I really appreciated about how David told this story.

And maybe in some respects I'm a bit immature still so I think that's a big reason why I have always embraced the younger generation and can appreciate what they find interesting. I'm still a big kid myself (laughs).

Dread Central: Because you guys didn't have a huge budget to fall back on and considering the wealth of material you had to work with on John Dies, were there some things that ended up not making it into the movie that you had originally wanted to?

Don Coscarelli:Oh definitely. There are some fantastic Lovecraftian monsters in the book that I couldn’t even consider doing because I just didn’t know how to manage them. Plus it would have cost a ton of money and that was money we just didn't have to spend. There were also some subtle things that just messed with the structure that I couldn’t put into the movie and even a full other subplot that I had to lose because structurally, it just didn't work. But there will be a couple of great monologues that will be on the Blu-Ray for the fans to enjoy.

Dread Central: I know there's been some recent Phantasm V talk but I was wondering if you had any plans at all to continue on after John Dies with these characters and do a sequel or something?

Don Coscarelli:Oh yeah, David just wrote a sequel book called This Book Is Full of Spiders: Seriously, Dude, Don't Touch It and it's really great but I have to wait and see how everything goes with the release of John (Dies) first. And I definitely still want to do Phantasm V too. Looking back at when I made part IV, I really saw that as the end of the franchise but it's really the one question that the fans always have- "When are you going to do another Phantasm?"- so I still want to figure out a way to make another one with the original actors. There really seems to be a desire for another movie for the fans so I'd love to do another for them.

With the finale of "American Horror Story Asylum" rapidly approaching, creator Ryan Murphy recently lifted the veil a bit pertaining to what we can expect from the next season of this ghoulish sliver of grand grue.

According to TV Guide Murphy confirmed that both Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters will join star Jessica Lange on the next cycle. "What Season 3 is about is more historical in nature," Murphy said. "I'm also interested into getting into a horror romance. That's certainly something that's going to be in the water for Season 3."

Murphy also said they're aiming for something lighter for its next iteration. "You're going to see a very different tone in Season 3," Murphy said. "As a person right now, I do feel lighter and wanting to embrace something a little bit more fun. I want to do something next season that's funnier. I really miss that Jessica Lange as [Season 1's] Constance, and I know she missed it, too."

Unlike the first two seasons, the third outing will take place in multiple cities, along with several time periods. "It's really about female power," Murphy said. "I got Jessica to do it because I did everything she asked — which was the location -- and I also told her she will have complete hair and makeup and the best designer gowns."

Murphy would not reveal what roles Paulson and Peters would play, but he said that Lange would play "a really glamour cat sort of lady in Season 3."

Texas Chainsaw 3D continues the legendary story of the homicidal Sawyer family, picking up where Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror classic left off in Newt, Texas, where for decades people went missing without a trace. The townspeople long suspected the Sawyer family, owners of a local barbeque pit, were somehow responsible. Their suspicions were finally confirmed one hot summer day when a young woman escaped the Sawyer house following the brutal murders of her four friends. Word around the small town quickly spread, and a vigilante mob of enraged locals surrounded the Sawyer stronghold, burning it to the ground and killing every last member of the family – or so they thought.

Decades later and hundreds of miles away from the original massacre, a young woman named Heather learns that she has inherited a Texas estate from a grandmother she never knew she had. After embarking on a road trip with friends to uncover her roots, she finds she is the sole owner of a lavish, isolated Victorian mansion. CD Projekt RED is bringing their open-world, sci-fi RPG Cyberpunk to gamers everywhere in 2015. The developers promise a dark story full of violence and greed where people will kill for a whole new kind of drug.

Read on to watch the teaser trailer and prepare for the bleak future ahead!

    From the Press Release
A week ago CD Projekt RED released the first official teaser trailer for their upcoming open-world, story-driven RPG Cyberpunk 2077, and it’s already been seen over 6 million times. The clip’s premiere was accompanied by a series of insightful materials, revealing even more details about the game setting.

“Cyberpunk isn’t about saving humanity, it’s about saving yourself,” says Mike Pondsmith, in the video titled “Cyberpunk 2077 - Mike Pondsmith about Cyberpunk World”. This video explains his inspirations for creating the pen-and-paper RPG Cyberpunk system, which is the main foundation of CD Projekt RED’s video game.

“Working with Mike Pondsmith is a great experience for the studio. Many of the people behind Cyberpunk 2077 have played his game, and having his support is very important for us. It’s good to know what inspired him and what influenced his vision of the world. Our experience in video game storytelling and the technology , capable of building open-world games, combined with Mike’s vision will result in one of the most kick-ass futuristic RPGs, ” said Adam Badowski, head of CD Projekt RED studio.

In Cyberpunk 2077, the player will be thrown into a dark future. The metropolis of Night City is a stage set to tell the tale of one individual, raised on the streets, who tries to lift himself up from the gutter and find a way to survive amongst boostergangs and megacorporations in a city of filth and sin. Drugs, violence, poverty and exclusion haven’t disappeared by 2077, as people stayed as they were for centuries – greedy, closed-minded and weak. But not only ghosts of the past trouble mankind, but new issues have appeared. Psychos go on rampages and the streets are filled with junkies addicted to a new form of entertainment – the braindance, a cheap way to experience the emotions and stimuli of someone else, someone living a more exciting life.

The creators of the game have released some new information about the world of 2077, which may play an important part in the game’s storyline. In the second half of the 21st century, a new form of entertainment is on everybody’s lips. Braindances are digital recordings of one person’s experience, packaged for sale to others.

    From the Press Release
Bacteria Arcade Edition from SinisterSoft is now available for Android and iOS handsets/tablets via the Google Play Store, Amazon AppStore and Apple AppStore! Bacteria was created and programmed by Anthony Ball, a veteran games creator from the late 80’s/early 90’s. It is Anthony’s first game in over twenty years. Warning: This is a strangely addictive game retro classic-style arcade game!

It has freaky style classical music - be prepared to have its tune fixed inside your head. The game starts off slowly, but by wave 4 the game is frantic, lots of chaotic action that keeps you on your toes. Inspired by multiple classic arcade games, the basic idea is to stop multiple waves of enemy bacteria from snatching your last few remaining cells that are located in the center of the screen. However, there are also some bacteria who are intent on destroying you - so you must destroy them first. If you succeed in lasting 60 seconds then you will be rewarded with a further cell to protect on the next wave, and so on...

There's time to kill between now and the March 8th return of "Grimm" to NBC so the powers-that-be have put together a four-episode web series featuring Monroe. Check out Episode 1, "A Sore Subject," in which Bud, an Eisbiber, visits the spice shop looking for a hair loss cure for his "friend."

Per Variety, "Grimm" has tasked junior scribes from its writers' room to handle the show's digital content. Nicholas Peet, a writer's assistant on "Grimm," penned and helmed the drama's webisodes that center on fan fave character Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell) in the spice shop and of course also include his sweetheart, Rosalee (Bree Turner). Bud is played by Danny Bruno.

    "Grimm" Series Synopsis:
"Grimm" is inspired by the classic Grimm Brothers' Fairy Tales. After Portland Homicide Detective Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli) discovers he's descended from an elite line of criminal profilers known as "Grimms," he increasingly finds his responsibilities as a detective at odds with his new responsibilities as a "Grimm."

With help from his confidants, Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell) and Rosalee (Bree Turner) - both reformed Grimm creatures, Nick must help those closest to him while still facing off against all manner of ancient evils, including royal lines dating back to the original profilers themselves, the Grimm Brothers. As Nick develops his ability to harness his inner Grimm, he begins to question what he once knew.

For more be sure to check out "Grimm" on NBC.com (where full episodes are available for viewing), "like""Grimm" on Facebook, and follow "Grimm" on Twitter.

Charlie Hunnam Bringing Anarchy to Crimson PeakMore casting news has come in for Guillermo del Toro's Crimson Peak as Variety is reporting that "Sons of Anarchy" and Pacific Rim star Charlie Hunnam is gearing up to reteam with the director for more supernatural shenanigans!

If signed, he'll join the previously announced Emma Stone. Plot details are being kept under wraps as del Toro and Lucinda Coxon rewrite the original script penned by del Toro and Matthew Robbins. Del Toro previously described the film as “a very set-oriented, classical but at the same time modern take on the ghost story. It will allow me to play with the conventions of the genre I know and love and at the same time subvert the old rules.

Legendary will produce and be a participating financing partner on the movie, with Universal Pictures retaining an option to finance at a later date.

    Look for more hopefully soon!

Go Back to Where the Evil Dead Began with Sam Raimi's Within the Woods

As you may or may not know, in 1978 director Sam Raimi made a little movie called Within the Woods that would go on to be the inspiration for the 1981 horror classic The Evil Dead. Thought lost and unavailable for quite some time, you can now watch the flick in its entirety right here!

Within the Woods stars Evil Dead staples Bruce Campbell and Ellen Sandweiss along with Evil Dead producer Scott Spiegel. The film was originally made to sell investors on funding a feature-length version. Yes, the quality is sketchy at best, but believe us when we tell you that having a chance to see this little sliver of cinematic history is worth the half hour of eye strain.

Ghost House Pictures is producing the much anticipated remake of The Evil Dead, the film that effectively launched the careers of Sam Raimi (Spider-Man franchise, Darkman, Drag Me to Hell), Rob Tapert (30 Days of Night), and Bruce Campbell, who played the Ash character and was co-producer of the original. They are now back to produce an Evil Dead for today's audience that's high on the horror, gore, plot twists, and more from a screenplay written by Fede Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues with Diablo Cody. Executive producers are J.R. Young, Nathan Kahane, Joseph Drake, and Peter Schlessel.

A core cast of young, fresh talent includes Jane Levy ("Suburgatory") as Mia; Shiloh Fernandez (Deadgirl, Red Riding Hood) as David; Lou Taylor Pucci (Carriers) as Eric; Jessica Lucas (Cloverfield) as Olivia; and Elizabeth Blackmore (Legend of the Seeker) as Natalie.

Look for the film in theatres on April 12th. Enough talk! It's time to find horror Within the Woods!

Exclusive: Actress Lara Flynn Boyle Talks Hansel & Gretel Get Baked; Three New Stills

Arriving to Lara Flynn Boyle’s trailer outside Gower Studios in Hollywood, California, this writer chatted with the Emmy-nominated actress regarding her character of the witch “Agnes” in the then-shooting feature Hansel & Gretel Get Baked.

Written by first-time feature screenwriter David Tillman, directed by Duane Journey, and starring Boyle, Twilight actor Michael Welch as “Hansel,” Molly C. Quinn as “Gretel,” and Bianca Saad, the film (formerly known as Black Forest: Hansel and Gretel & The 420 Witch) revolves around an old crone who lives in Pasadena, California, who lures teens into her house with a special blend of marijuana in order to eat the adolescents in an effort to maintain her own youth and beauty.

Shooting day nineteen of twenty-one, Boyle, in a robe and fresh out of the extensive prosthetic makeup required of her role (courtesy of Vincent Guastini and his company VGP Effects & Design), politely asked if I would mind if she smoked. I didn’t.

The forty-two-year-old actress, best known as “Donna Hayward” on David Lynch’s cult-classic television series “Twin Peaks” (and later as Assistant District Attorney “Helen Gamble” on “The Practice”), told me of what attracted her to Hansel & Gretel Get Baked.

“Mostly I love being an actor because there is no fear of consequences, and you can do whatever you want, and you don’t get in trouble,” she stated between drags. “So playing ‘Agnes,’ I can’t get in trouble, and all of the things that you want to do and say in real life, I can, and I can get away with it. It’s ideal.”

“This isn’t an easy role,” she continued. “It’s very challenging because I want my witch to have a heart and to come from a very emotionally centered place, but I hope the audience doesn’t see how challenging it is and the work I put in. I hope it comes across as very breezy. But eating eyeballs, eating people, and cutting people up - it’s not as fun and easy as it looks! I said to Duane (Journey) and David (Tillman), ‘Wow, you people are really twisted!’ But I guess I’m really twisted because I said I would do it! We are all really nuts. But I shouldn’t say ‘nuts’ because then they’ll have me eating nuts, too!” she laughed.

“So, with all of my theatre training, I’m eating eyeballs and making sure that the blood squirts out in a certain way,” Boyle mused good-naturedly,“and I’m like, ‘Oh my god, I’m a trained actress. What am I doing?’ But it’s so challenging that way and really lovely!”

As for the makeup required of the role (Boyle plays a character four centuries of age, whose visage changes dramatically from young to old, depending on the amount of human flesh she consumes), “It takes about five hours to put it on, and it’s so impeccably done that by the time it’s done, you can be so lazy as an actor,” she stated.

“It changes the way you walk and the way you talk,” the actress continued. “It is an ‘out of body’ experience. I mean right now, I look like me. But I’ve seen myself when under makeup, and I’m like, ‘Who is that freak? Who is that person?’ The special effects people do such good work that I feel like I don’t have to do any. It is like, ‘Where do you want me to stand? What do you want me to do? Roll camera.’ Then it just all flows. It’s very psychological. It’s seriously trippy. It’s so easy to become this character under this makeup. It’s bizarre, but in a beautiful way.”

On the head space required to endure such extensive makeup application (Boyle first became familiar with this process during her filming of Poltergeist III), “You have to go to a certain space,” she offered. “I play a lot of 'violent femmes,' and it’s very hypnotic. It strangely gives you five hours to just sit with yourself. It can be very claustrophobic if you don’t just relax and give it up. It can be very odd, and also really beautiful.”

As for removing the prosthetics, “I get a little frightened because I don’t know what I’m going to look like when they take it all off,” she laughed. “It takes about an hour and a half, and this sounds so corny, but its like, ‘Oh there you are; welcome home, Lara. How was your day off?’ It really feels like I had a day off. It’s really cool.”

The conversation turned to her approach to the character of “Agnes.”

“It’s fun to play with it,” she stated of her varied approaches to her takes. “It’s really, really fun to just play. I don’t want to be selfish and to throw anyone for a loop, but it is fun to stay on your toes, and it is fun to take little moments you have and to bring them into a scene. I was in the shower the other day and the hot water ran out and I still had conditioner in my hair so when I got to the set, I was so fucking cranky, and it was fun to put that into a scene. Or like beautiful loving moments that you have with someone while you are walking the set, and it changes what you are going to do during the next three minutes when you shoot a take, and it’s fun to always have that going. I love to be afraid and to have that ‘Oh my gosh, is this going to go well?’ moment. I don’t like getting lazy [as an actor], and that’s why I’ve been doing this. I don’t like to be stuck in a rut. I like to bring everything into a scene.”

As for her connection to the character, “I just fell in love with her; to know her is to love her, and I hope people love her as much as I do,” gushed Boyle. “There has to be a tragic sensibility with the character in order to relate to her, I think. And I think you have a responsibility to take care of the character that you are playing. I’ve never, ever embarked on any role that I didn’t have the utmost compassion for. I just love the character. I think she’s just phenomenal. I would want to hang out with her. I wish she was my roommate. I would have loved to have gone to college with her. I would have loved to have been able to sic Agnes on a boy who had hurt my feelings. ‘Go eat his eyeballs out! Go stab him! Go get him for me!’ And she’s just so great that way. She’s fantastic. Unfortunately, I think playing this role is a little too easy for me. It’s really cathartic. It’s great, and at the end of the day, I’m so relaxed.”

With the actress called back to the set, our interview came to an end although as I departed the trailer, Boyle stopped me.

“You have really pretty eyes,” she told me. “They are amazing.”

“Donna Hayward” told me I had pretty eyes. Surreal.
