We've been talking about Adam Steigert's horror/sci-fi opus Ombis for quite some time, and now we have some good news to share as the film has landed a distribution deal with Phoenix Group Releasing.

From the Press Release:
DefTone Pictures Studios, Inc., has signed a distribution deal with Phoenix Group Releasing to release upcoming science fiction/horror film Ombis. Ombis is directed by Adam R. Steigert and stars Richard Satterwhite, Jason John Beebe, Sara Manzella, Michael Sciabarrasi, Kathy Murphy, and Alexander Sloan Mcbryde and introduces Rich Winiatowski and Aryn Fitzgerald.

Currently DefTone and Phoenix Group aren’t publishing a release date for the film; however, they are in talks to release it domestically and to the foreign market in the middle of 2013. This bumps up DefTone's original release date of October 13, 2013, which the studio set in 2011 prior to the Phoenix Group Releasing acquiring Ombis for distribution. Phoenix Group Releasing shares a direct relationship with broadcast cable/satellite operators for PPV/VOD in North America that covers more than 80 million homes and is very active in major markets such as AFM, MIPCOM, CANNES, and NAPTE, as well as screening invitations to more than 1,000 film and programming buyers around the world. So the chances that the epic alien invasions will begin in 2013 are only going to be that much easier!

Synopsis:
Peaceful, rustic Metzburgh is a quiet village that was a former industrial town whose glory days are long past after the collapse of Metzburgh Grain. Teenager Mark Lowe (Jason John Beebe) and his ex-girlfriend Lucy Greenheart (Sarah Manzella) are stuck in a lovers quarrel when a meteorite crash lands in the passive community. Glen (Robert Bozek ), an ex-employee of the grain silos who became homeless after the collapse of the mills, stumbles upon the fiery crash. Unaware that his find could be dangerous, he gets too close and a chemical poison sprays out of the meteorite, enveloping him. The chemical agent known as Ombis begins to turn his insides into a slimly substance. Unable to stop the spread of the infection, Glen runs onto the road, where Mark and Lucy find him. The two take him to the only doctor in town, Doctor D (Deborah Manzella).

Mark and Lucy are shocked by their gruesome discovery and immediately contact the local sheriff (Richard Satterwhite), who is on a date with lovely waitress Daisy (Kathy Murphy). With their date being interrupted, they aid the traumatized lovebirds. With no sign of the creature or its victims, Brackett dismisses Mark's fantastic story. Quickly returning to where the meteorite crash landed, Mark finds a new horrific discovery that the meteorite wasn't the only creature to crash land on Earth.

With the townsfolk overrun by the virus and the collateral damage adding up, a special containment team shows up to try to keep order and contain the plague. The human struggle of the residents of Metzburgh and their fight for survival then begins as the village is overrun with the alien invasion and the mutated humans that it creates.

Exclusive: Composer Corey Allen Jackson Talks Hansel & Gretel Get Baked and More!

Exclusive: Composer Corey Allen Jackson Talks Hansel & Gretel Get Baked and More! With the feature Hansel & Gretel Get Baked releasing February 19th On Demand and in select cities on February 22nd via Tribeca Film, we thought it time to bring you our interview with the flick’s composer, Corey Allen Jackson.

Prior to becoming the recipient of the BMI Award for Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television from the University of Southern California, 44-year-old Jackson studied music composition at the La Schola Cantorum in Paris, France, and to date has racked up an impressive list of genre scores, including those for the Steven R. Monroe-directed horror flicks It Waits, Sasquatch Mountain, Left in Darkness, I Spit On Your Grave (2010) and the upcoming MoniKa, among others.

We recently chatted with him regarding his process as well as his approach to scoring director Duane Journey’s Hansel & Gretel Get Baked.

Related Story:Interview with Bianca Saad of Hansel & Gretel Get Baked

“I started as a metal guitarist, and I just assumed that if you played, you wrote as well,” Jackson told us of his musical beginnings. “I was fifteen or so when I began playing. Later in college I majored in music composition because it was the closest thing to songwriting available, and I kept hearing the classical works of fellow student composers, and I thought to myself, ‘I can do that.’ So I composed my first concert piece.”

After earning both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in composition and his studies abroad, Jackson landed at USC’s program for film scoring.

“For the first half of the program, I thought, ‘I cannot do this,’” he recalled. “But then I started working, and I was absolutely hooked.”

As for his work on director Journey’s Hansel & Gretel Get Baked (the David Tillman-scripted project stars Michael Welch and Molly C. Quinn as the titular characters, who together run afoul of an evil, drug-dealing witch played by Lara Flynn Boyle), “I researched some scores to prepare,” Jackson told us. “I rarely listen to film scores without picture, but I do watch films while listening critically to see how great composers of the past and present approach scenes. I [also] checked out films scored by the late Elmer Bernstein, including his An American Werewolf in London, and Christopher Young’s Hellbound score and Geoff Zanelli’s [composition for] Disturbia. I absolutely love all of these movies and their scores.”

“I wanted to be a little ‘old school’ on this one, in terms of melodies and instrumentation, to get that ‘fairy tale’ vibe,” offered Jackson, who employed strings, harp and celesta as well as an 80’s orchestral sound, in his aural approach. “Not too much ‘old school,’ but just enough magic to sell it. I played the comedy dark, but with a hint of fantasy, and the horror scenes as ‘full on’ horror. I played it straight but a bit over-the-top. I think it was successful and worked with the horror/comedy elements, but I wouldn’t play a full-blown horror film that way as a contemporary film composer.”

“I had three weeks to write and produce this project,” Jackson stated of the tight schedule, “and we had to score using players from out of the country, due to union and production company restrictions, so I had one day with the players and two days to mix in ProTools. I wrote the score using Apple’s Logic.”

Chatting about his affinity for the genre, Jackson told us, “Although I can score in many different genres, I’ve been a horror fan since I first saw Jaws, Halloween and Prophecy in the 70’s. It would drive my parents mad because I could not sleep for two days after [watching them], but I always had to go back for more. There’s a comfort I get from the genre, something I think most avid fans understand. A scary movie makes you totally forget about real life for a while. I think the world is a much more interesting place with horror films and books in it.”

As for his prolific working relationship with director Steven R. Monroe, “I love working with him and have been very fortunate to do several films with him,” offered Jackson. “After ten or so projects, we have a rhythm to our process and can work quickly. Films are usually temped with other music in the editing process. Monroe and I then discuss whether the temp works, what should be highlighted with certain instruments or motifs, etc., and then I start scoring. Interestingly, Monroe sometimes temps with my music.”

“This process is similar with other directors,” he continued. “There is variety in personalities, however. Some directors want to be extremely involved with the process, and others give me just a few notes and I turn in the score. I generally encourage directors to communicate with me in dramatic terms, rather than in musical ones, because the language is more universal.”

As for whether we’ll hear Jackson’s work in the upcoming Steven R. Monroe-helmed I Spit On Your Grave Too, “I hope so!” stated Jackson. “Steven and I have discussed a few ideas already, but the paperwork has not been signed. I’ve not scored a sequel so it would be great to see what problems or benefits arise.”

Exclusive: Katie Featherston talks Paranormal Activity 4, Sequels and More!

On Tuesday, January 29th, Paranormal Activity 4 will arrive everywhere on DVD and Blu-ray to bring all the spooky right into your very own living rooms; and to mark the occasion, Dread Central recently caught up with one of the stars who has been with the franchise since the very beginning.

During a recent phone interview, we spoke to Katie Featherston about the latest Paranormal Activity installment, which brings the actress' character as an adult back into the fold. We also heard more from Featherston on what fans can possibly expect in future PA sequels, more on the status of Paranormal Activity 5 and what's been the biggest surprise for her throughout the PA years.

Check out our exclusive interview with Featherston below, and look for Paranormal Activity 4 on DVD and Blu-ray (review here) next Tuesday.

Exclusive: Katie Featherston talks Paranormal Activity 4, Sequels and More!

Dread Central: Because you were so involved in creating the character of Katie originally and this world with Oren (Peli), do you get to offer up any input when it comes time to work on the next project at all? How far in advance do you know the story or do they keep you guys in the dark for a bit too?

Katie Featherston:That's always usually up to the guys in charge; but I know it's something they're constantly thinking about ever since we began working on the second Paranormal. But, much like the fans, we really don’t know what the movie will end up being at all until we see it, which is what makes these movies so great- they're so unexpected and we really get a lot of space for improv and to try a lot of different things, which is great from a creative perspective. It's rare that you get that kind of freedom and room so for me, I think that's why I have so much fun making the Paranormal movies; I'm just as surprised as the fans are by the results every October.

Dread Central: Even though we were following your character in part three but when you were younger, was it nice to get the call for Paranormal 4 saying that you were going to be far more involved this time around?

Katie Featherston:Oh definitely- I have to say, I was really sad I wasn't more around for part three but I absolutely loved the story so I knew that it worked out the way it needed to for that story. I also loved that it wasn't necessarily the story the fans were expecting either; I think they thought we'd pick up right after two, but we managed to surprise them again.

Dread Central: One of the things I wanted to ask since I'm a fan of the franchise is that I'm really interested to see what exactly happened with Katie and Kristi after where part three left off- do you know if that's something that has been discussed at all?

Katie Featherston:I think at some point we're going to fill in those blanks; I haven't heard anything specifically, but there are always those red herrings in these movies about different times and things like that which we put in there to give fans clues along the way that tie into this story. So in part three, there's that moment where I'm dropping off the videotapes and you see a few marked from the '90s, which definitely will tie in at some point- or at least I think it should (laughs). Again, you never know- they keep me guessing too sometimes.

Dread Central: So have you heard anything yet on Paranormal Activity 5 or is it still too early?

Katie Featherston:I haven't heard much on part five yet, but I know they're working on it. [SPOILER] But yeah, we left off with me and all those crazy witches at the end of the last one so I'm curious to see if we address that or not. But I just love the vitality of these stories and how every new chapter tells its own story in a way that serves those past stories, too. But I do really hope I'm part of the next one, definitely.

Exclusive: Katie Featherston talks Paranormal Activity 4, Sequels and More!

Dread Central: I wanted to ask because this is a franchise that has now been a part of your life for over six years now, what's been the most surprising aspect of this whole Paranormal Activity experience for you?

Katie Featherston:I think the most surprising thing for me is that we're still around and that we became this huge franchise- that's just so amazing to me still considering where Oren (Peli), Micah (Sloat) and I were just a few years ago, working on the original film. All we wanted when we made the first one was to get it into one theater; that’s all, just one theater, and look at it now. It's just grown into something so special to all of us and it really shows you the power of all our great fans that come out every single year to see these movies. It's all really incredible.

Shock Till You Drop just posted some interesting news concerning WWE Studios' new version of Leprechaun. As you may recall from previous stories, Warwick Davis will not be returning to the role he originated and went on to play in six cult movies. Replacing him will be WWE’s own wrestling leprechaun, Hornswaggle (pictured below). During a quick interview with WWE president Michael Luisi, the following was spilled out of the old pot o' gold!

“The tone is going to be a little darker, a little more traditional horror than the Warwick Davis ones that people remember, trying to find a way to please fans of that genre but at the same time this is really being played for scares.”

Taissa Farmiga Returns for the Next Season of American Horror Story

Tonight is the final episode of the stellar "American Horror Story: Asylum," and we cannot wait to see what lunacy the powers-that-be will be cooking up for Season Three. Speaking of which, a familiar face from Season One is set to return for more terror!

As per Ryan Murphy in Entertainment Weekly...

"I missed her [Taissa Farmiga] this season. There wasn’t really a role for her. I feel very protective of her, and I didn’t want her to go back into the loony bin—it was too dark. So I thought, well, ‘I want Taissa to be one of the leads next year.’ I called her up and pitched her the character for the season and she loved it and she said, ‘Yes let’s do it.’ So we’re in negotiations for her to headline Season 3."

She joins the previously announced Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, and Jessica Lange on the next cycle.

Chloe Moretz Wonders What Would Happen If I Stay

Chloe Moretz Wonders What Would Happen If I StayChloe Moretz is an actress who can do it all. The fact that for the most part she's chosen to stay working within the genre is just one of the many reasons why we adore her. Well, that and we're sure she's gonna look scary as hell all covered in blood in Carrie.

Variety reports that "Nashville" producer R.J. Cutler is in talks to direct the supernatural music film If I Stay with Chloe Moretz attached to star. Based on Gayle Forman's 2009 novel, If I Stay follows 17-year-old Mia as she deals with the aftermath of a catastrophic car accident involving her family. In a coma, Mia has an out-of-body experience and watches as friends and family gather at the hospital where she is being treated. Mia watches as her memories flash before her eyes as she comes to realize that she must decide if she is to wake up and lead a life far more difficult than she ever anticipated or to slip away and die.

Not sure how Dread-worthy this one is gonna turn out, but we'll be keeping an eye on things.

Sundance 2013: Hell Baby Q&A Transcript

$

0

Following its premiere at Sundance, a Q&A was held for Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant's feature film directorial debut, Hell Baby, and we have a transcript of the festivities right here for you. Read on!

In Attendance: directors Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon.

Q: How much of this was scripted and how much was improv?

A: In the final cut I would say it’s about 80% scripted. People really liked the script but I think we could have cut a Peter Jackson 9-hour improv (laughter). The whole last scene was not scripted. Like the whole “White people pass me on the street and don’t even say hello.” I mean why would you EVER put that in the script (laughter). So yeah, that was made up and all the baby scene stuff.

Q: Who came up with the idea of a New Orleans shoot?

A: We’ve always liked New Orleans a lot. We were in the Mardi Gras parade a couple years ago and we sort of fell in love with New Orleans. It was more of an effort to make the movie feel more specific. Originally it was set in L.A. in a house that was called “Murder House”. The same house that "American Horror Story" used, but it came out before the TV show came out. We were there and a tour bus would come by and say, “And there’s the murder house”. Then in the TV show they did exactly that. So we thought to ourselves, “Well I guess we gotta put this somewhere else.” So we found a whole new place in N.O. which would give us whole new flavor and characters and stuff.

Q: What made you decide to do a horror movie?

A: We’ve been talking about doing a horror movie for 25 years. We write comedy and we do comedy, but we watch horror movies. The movies that we talk about are horror movies. Horror movies like to keep people on their toes, and they dramatically shift like every 6 years or so. It's found footage and now it's like ghosts, it’s gore…it’s Saw!. It is interesting how they change. We both love good horror movies. We like movies like Rosemary’s Baby, The Changeling and The Exorcist so I think we know this stuff kinda backwards and forwards.

Q: How did you do the music for the food scenes?

A: There was actually very little music in that. They made the music with their lips and jaws. Actually in the script it was supposed to be a symphony. We ate Po Boys which are a foot long sandwich with roast beef and gravy. Six of them is like the weight of a 12-year-old boy. The first thing that we shot was our coverage. We are sitting there doing the food symphony and the camera is on us (Lennon and Garant) and off camera Rob Corddry ate 2. So we're sitting here improving and trying to be funny thinking and by the end he ate 7 (laughter).

Q: What was in the vomit?

A: There were 2 kinds of vomit. We thought the split pea soup would work better, but what ended up working was minestrone.

Q: How long did it take to shoot the devil baby scene?

A: The devil baby scene was the hardest thing to shoot ever. We didn’t want to do any CGI. For one we couldn’t afford it and it would never look good. Even though it looks weird I love the way the baby looks. I am a big Trilogy of Terror fan. I like those kinds of movies. We shot that over 2 days and it was pretty stressful. One thing about all of the silly people in the movie is they are all really good at committing to things no matter how stupid they are. We actually rehearsed that whole scene like a play for like a whole day. So we rehearsed it then filmed it in like 2 days. There were many babies. There was the football baby that we could actually throw around. There was an animatronic baby, and there was biting baby which never worked at all. All of them had hoses in them that squirted blood which also never worked at all. So it was really, really tricky.

Q: With all of the family movies you do, was this a tough sell to get support for?

A: This was a very inexpensive movie. Maybe it’s because of the genre but I think its easier to get a movie like this made or a $200 million movie than anything in the middle. Those are just impossible. This is a genre that has had success so everyone that read the script pretty much wanted to make it.

Q: So the old woman, and I hope to God that it was a body suit. Is it how you originally imagined it or did you want it worse or what?

A: The suit is the worst thing that has ever happened to us in our entire lives. We wanted an old lady like the one from Room 220. We wanted one of those, but then we thought that would really be a bummer to have someone’s grandmother standing around naked all the time. That is actually a guy in that crazy suit. I would love to tell you that is didn’t take 12 hours to get him into it, and he is naked underneath that. When he had to use the bathroom like a gentleman he has to do thru the opening in the suit’s vagina. He literally has to un-Velcro the vagina. This guy is a good friend of ours. The guy who made it said it would take him 3 hours MAX to get him into it, and it took him 12. One day they got the face glued on and they were working on his hands and he dozed off in his makeup chair, and they were listening to Cthulu the musical, when he woke up the entire makeup department was asleep on the floor. So every shot done in that suit was done in the last 2 days of production. Because that suit and the hell baby never worked…EVER!

Moderator: One more..

Q: Was it all shot in Louisiana?

A: It’s amazing 85% of the movie was shot within 1 city block of N.O. The exterior shots are one house; the interior is the directly behind that house. It was like all in 1 block. The church was a little uptown, about 8 blocks. When we talked to the priest at that church we had to pitch everything the movie was about. We said, “It’s like those old time movies about like fighting priests.” So the priest said, “We could use more priests like those” (laughter). Thank you all very much- I hope you liked it.

Hell Baby stars Leslie Bibb, Rob Corddry, Rob Huebel, Paul Scheer, Riki Lindhome and Keegan-Michael Key.

Stuart Gordon's Fortress Sentenced to Blu-ray; Lawnmower Man to Follow!

$

I’ve always been of the opinion that Stuart Gordon’s futuristic prison flick Fortress doesn’t get enough love. Not a perfect movie by any means, but one I’ll be more than happy to add to my Blu-ray collection and hope you will too, lest I be forced to activate the Intestinator.

Stuart Gordon followed-up Re-Animator, From Beyond, Dolls, and Robot Jox by stepping into Paul Verhoeven territory with this violent 1992 sci-fi thriller starring Highlander Christopher Lambert and Loryn Locklin as a husband and (pregnant) wife arrested for violating the population control policies of the dystopian future; their punishment being a life sentence in a corporate-controlled, state-of-the-art, supermax prison.

Robocop villain and “That 70’s Show” dad Kurtwood Smith plays the authoritarian prison warden who takes an unhealthy obsession on Lambert’s wife. Mohawked Road Warrior bad guy Vernon Wells and Re-Animator himself, Jeffrey Combs, co-star as fellow inmates.

Echo Bridge Entertainment will bring the underrated Fortress to Blu-ray for the first time on May 7th. Being that this is an Echo Bridge release that you can pre-order right now on Amazon for about $10, I wouldn’t expect much by way of disc extras. I just hope the HD print isn’t just a slightly upgraded DVD copy.

And for those of you in need of even more 1990’s sci-fi horrors, Universal has announced plans to release both The Lawnmower Man and its nigh unwatchable sequel Lawnmower Man 2: Beyond Cyberspace on Blu-ray sometime later this year. We’ll have more on those releases – the former much more than the latter - when Universal announces more specifics.

More on What's Ahead in American Horror Story Chapter 3Chapter 2 of "American Horror Story," known as "Asylum," came to a hugely satisfying ending last night, and already fans are looking ahead to Chapter 3. Ryan Murphy spoke with EW and shed a bit more light on things.

When asked if we'll see people from both Chapters 1 and 2 in the upcoming season, Murphy said, "A mixture of both, and then I’m meeting new people. I’m meeting new actresses. I’m meeting some really cool people. I think the story is good and so far has attracted a great interest from people because of what it’s about, which is fun."

Can he tell us any more about the third season? "No. I start meeting with the writers on Monday. I’ve talked to them about what I want to do, and everyone loves it. I want to flesh it out a bit before I announce it. I have like six nominees for the word. You know this year the word was “asylum.” I’m trying to figure out which is the best one." Do the actors have an idea of what's coming up? "No. And believe you me, they have all called. I mean yes, they know. To get Taissa [Farmiga] to come back, I had to pitch her the whole idea. So some people know. But some of those actors don’t want to know til they read a script."

Speaking of Taissa, who's in talks to return, is she part of that "younger romance" we heard about already? "Yes. There’s a romantic element. I think the whole season I want to be funnier, romantic. But make no mistake; just when I think it’s gonna be a little lighter, I find this great, true-life character that’s the most horrible woman ever created."

And that character is the main villain? "Um, kind of. I think Jessica is going back to be in that Constance-vein. She’s gonna go back to her evil roots, Jessica Lange... I want constant makeup, gowns, and a full-on blow-out for every scene!"

Any teases about the location? "This one will be shot on location in three different cities in the country. I should just say that it’s American Horror Story: Bret Easton Ellis, and the whole thing is set in his mind. Wouldn’t that be brilliant? Maybe that’s Season Four."

Lastly, we couldn't sing the praises enough of Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, who directed the "Asylum" finale among a few other episodes. Will he be returning to the show? "Yes, Alfonso is going to be our producer/director so he will be directing a lot of them. He will be working with me to really create the look of what we’re doing. What we’re doing is more ambitious than what we’ve ever done."

And that's all we know so far. If you're curious to learn more about the "American Horror Story: Asylum" finale itself, be sure to hit the EW link below.

Having been a zombie for Romero, I can tell you first-hand that a lot goes into playing one of the undead. Oh, how I wish I would have had someone of the caliber of Warm Bodies' Rob Corddry to guide me through it all.

Starring Nicholas Hoult, Rob Corddry, Teresa Palmer, and John Malkovich, Warm Bodies follows an existentially tormented zombie named "R" (Hoult) who begins an unlikely friendship with the girlfriend of one of his victims (Palmer). It's based on the book by Isaac Marion.
