Reel Evil filmmaker Danny Draven announced today via his Facebook page word on his next feature project, a flick titled Hair Metal Massacre, as well as a look at the film’s teaser art. Check it out!

States Draven, who helmed the recently released Reel Evil for Full Moon, “My production company will kick off the new year with Hair Metal Massacre. I'll be producing and directing. Expect gore, mayhem, killer music tracks, rock stars, and other surprises!”

With the tagline "The 80’s Are Back... From the Dead!,"Hair Metal Massacre sounds to be channeling the tone of that decade's cult fave, Satanic metal flicks Trick or Treat and Black Roses (which in this writer’s opinion wouldn’t be a bad thing).

Author Gregory Lamberson has revealed the cover for Storm Demon, the fifth book in his occult detective series The Jake Helman Files. Check it out here along with a look at The Jake Helman Files: Afterlife Project, which is available as a free download.

Storm Demon will be published in October by Medallion Press. The cover was created by Arturo Delgado and James Tampa, Medallion’s in-house graphic designer and art director, respectively, and depicts Helman’s latest nemesis.

“Medallion gives its authors the opportunity to suggest cover ideas, and this is exactly what I wanted,” Lamberson says. “Arturo and Jim understand the series perfectly, and the finished art faithfully captures the story elements of this fifth book.”

Jake Helman Returns in Gregory Lamberson's Storm Demon

Storm Demon begins shortly after the events of the fourth book in the series, Tortured Spirits. The Medallion website offers this plot description:

Jake Helman returns to New York City, anxious to start a new life with NYPD homicide detective Maria Vasquez. But the supernatural forces making his life hell have no intention of leaving him alone.

When psychic healer Laurel Doniger disappears, Jake lays his life on the line to bring her back alive. With time running out, he must uncover the truth behind Laurel’s secret past. He’s drawn into a conflict with a being who has existed since the dawn of mankind. She’ll destroy New York City to take revenge on those who interfere with her plans. This beautiful creature is known by many names—Lilith, succubus, witch—but Jake and his allies will come to know her as the Storm Demon. And the world will never be the same.

The Jake Helman Files began with Personal Demons, winner of the IPPY Gold Medal for Horror, and continued with Desperate Souls, the Bram Stoker Award nominated Cosmic Forces, and the aforementioned Tortured Spirits. All four books in the series are available in print, e-book, and audio book editions. Lamberson anticipates writing ten books in the series.

As for the freebie, Medallion is currently offering a free illustrated PDF and EPUB download of The Jake Helman Files: Afterlife Project. Just click here to get your copy.

Four Pilots With Some Sci-Fi Flavor Heading Our Way

$

Four Pilots With Some Sci-Fi Flavor Heading Our WayAs Doctor Gash mentioned this morning, it's pilot season for the TV networks, and we have four more projects to report on, all of which bring with them some tasty sci-fi flavor.

First up, NBC has greenlit "Believe," a JJ Abrams project with Oscar-nominated filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men). "Believe" was written by Cuarón and Mark Friedman ("The Forgotten"). It is about the unlikely relationship between a girl in possession of a great gift/powers — which will come into their own in seven years — and the man who is sprung from prison to protect her from those trying to hunt her down. Cuarón, Friedman, Abrams, and Bryan Burk are executive producing for Warner Bros. TV and Abrams’ Bad Robot. Cuarón is attached to direct.

Don't like the sounds of that one but you're a big Abrams fan? Then switch the channel to Fox, which has an untitled new project from Abrams and J.H. Wyman ("Fringe") on the way. The Warner Bros. TV/Bad Robot-produced project is described as an action-packed buddy cop show, set in the near future, when all LAPD officers are partnered with highly evolved human-like androids. Wyman wrote the pilot and will executive produce with Bad Robot’s Abrams and Bryan Burk. Kathy Lingg is co-exec producing. Probably not something we'll be covering even if it does make it to the series stage, but we figured we'd pass on the info anyway.

Lastly, The CW has two pilots on order that could be of interest. First is "Oxygen," written/exec produced by Meredith Averill, about an epic romance between a human girl and an alien boy when he and eight others of his kind are integrated into a suburban high school 10 years after they landed on Earth and were consigned to an internment camp. It's said to be in the vein of District 9. "Oxygen" hails from Space Floor TV’s Josh Appelbaum, Andre Nemec, and Scott Rosenberg and Olé Prods’ Richard Shepard, Sean Furst, and Bryan Furst.

Second is "The Hundred," written by Jason Rothenberg. "The Hundred" is set 97 years after a nuclear war has destroyed civilization. A spaceship housing the lone human survivors sends 100 juvenile delinquents back to Earth to investigate the possibility of re-colonizing the planet. The project is based on upcoming Alloy books written by Kass Morgan and published by Little, Brown. Warner Bros. TV, which owns Alloy Entertainment, is producing with Rothenberg and Alloy’s Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo executive producing.

Marvel Inching Closer to Doctor Strange Movie

Marvel Inching Closer to Doctor Strange MovieWe've been talking about a possible Doctor Strange movie since August of 2011, and now finally there's something to report on. Unfortunately it doesn't sound like we'll be getting it anytime soon as the powers-that-be are taking baby steps.

According to MTV, Marvel Studios has a lot in store for fans with its wave of Phase Two films: Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World in 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014, and then finally The Avengers 2 in 2015. However, President of Production Kevin Feige is already thinking about Marvel Studios Phase Three.

"'Doctor Strange,' which I've been talking about for years, is definitely one of them," Feige said when asked about Phase Three. "He's a great, original character, and he checks the box off this criteria that I have: He's totally different from anything else we have, just like 'Guardians of the Galaxy.' He's totally different from anything we've done before, as is 'Ant-Man,' which keeps us excited."

That being said... See you in like four years, Doc.

Created in 1963, Doctor Strange is the story of an arrogant surgeon who is injured in a car accident and goes on to become the Sorcerer Supreme of the Marvel universe. Using his magical powers, Strange protects the Earth from attacks from other realms.

B-Sides: Keep Left of The Invisible Maniac

Before directing Detroit Rock City and unleashing a giant sperm on New York City in the “Wadzilla” segment of Chillerama, Adam Rifkin introduced the world to a horny, psychopathic phantom known as The Invisible Maniac. Not enough movie maniacs have their own personal theme songs, if you ask me.

Working under the alias “Rif Coogan”, Rifkin helmed this 1990 T&A slasher comedy about a sexually repressed nerd named Kevin Dornwinkle, who grows up to invent invisibility only to be mocked by his colleagues. The stinging mockery drives him over the edge so he murders them. He escapes from an insane asylum and goes incognito as a summer school teacher, where he continues to perfect his invisibility formula while taking an unhealthy interest in student bodies, particularly those of scream queens Melissa Moore, Debra Lamb, and the late porn star Savannah.

I’m fairly certain Rifkin is one of the many Dornwinkle-esque nerds rocking out in this rarely seen music video as the metal band Keep Left (with special guest guitarist Douglas Lytle) gleefully jam about a homicidal, translucent pervert. “He’s Invisible” is the official Troma-quality theme song; so catchy and repetitious you’ll probably have it stuck in your head for the rest of the day.

Peaceful, rustic Metzburgh is a quiet village that was a former industrial town whose glory days are long past after the collapse of Metzburgh Grain. Teenager Mark Lowe (Jason John Beebe) and his ex-girlfriend Lucy Greenheart (Sarah Manzella) are stuck in a lovers quarrel when a meteorite crash lands in the passive community. Glen (Robert Bozek ), an ex-employee of the grain silos who became homeless after the collapse of the mills, stumbles upon the fiery crash. Unaware that his find could be dangerous, he gets too close and a chemical poison sprays out of the meteorite, enveloping him. The chemical agent known as Ombis begins to turn his insides into a slimly substance. Unable to stop the spread of the infection, Glen runs onto the road, where Mark and Lucy find him. The two take him to the only doctor in town, Doctor D (Deborah Manzella).

Mark and Lucy are shocked by their gruesome discovery and immediately contact the local sheriff (Richard Satterwhite), who is on a date with lovely waitress Daisy (Kathy Murphy). With their date being interrupted, they aid the traumatized lovebirds. With no sign of the creature or its victims, Brackett dismisses Mark's fantastic story. Quickly returning to where the meteorite crash landed, Mark finds a new horrific discovery that the meteorite wasn't the only creature to crash land on Earth.

With the townsfolk overrun by the virus and the collateral damage adding up, a special containment team shows up to try to keep order and contain the plague. The human struggle of the residents of Metzburgh and their fight for survival then begins as the village is overrun with the alien invasion and the mutated humans that it creates.

Box Office: Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters Lures Many Moviegoers into Its Gingerbread House

$

0

Box Office: Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters Lures Many Moviegoers into Its Gingerbread HouseAudiences had no interest in an aging Austrian action hero last weekend, but they showed up this weekend to see a pair of younger action heroes save a Bavarian forest from witchery.

The R-rated 3D antics of Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters proved a somewhat surprising #1 at the box office.

The Gemma Arterton-Jeremy Renner 3D action horror flick from Dead Snow director Tommy Wirkola topped the box office with $18 million. If you listen to Nikki Finke, that’s actually a weak opening; if you listen to Box Office Mojo, it’s actually a solid opening. Compared to the weekend’s other new wide releases that both bombed (Parker and Movie 43) and considering Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters is an R-rated genre mishmash that sat on a shelf for over a year, I’m inclined to agree with Box Office Mojo’s assessment. Even as one of the select few that enjoyed the flick, I’ll be the first to express my shock at how well it did. I had this one pegged as a big bomb, even more so after sitting in a nearly empty theater at Thursday night’s sneak preview.

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters earned a so-so “B” Cinemascore rating from audiences polled. That’s exactly the same Cinemascore rating Dredd received. I only throw that tidbit out there just so I can hear the sounds of heads exploding all over the internet. I believe I just heard Matt Fini’s skull go boom.

Hey, an R-rated action-horror movie opened #1 at the box office; that’s a good thing even if this isn’t the one you wish it were.

The international box office sure isn’t a disappointment. H&G:WH opened huge in Russia earlier this week taking in over $9 million. Expectations are it will also do strong business in Asia and South America shortly. Given the alleged $50 million budget there’s always a chance that the theatrical and eventual home video release puts this well enough into the red to spawn a sequel. Not likely, but not entirely out of the realm of possibility.

Mama dropped 55% from last weekend with $12.5 million. Still enough to hold strong at #2 and about on par with how most horror movies drop in their second week. As it begins closing in on nearly $50 million in two weeks, I find the lack of announcement of a sequel already to be a tad curious.

In limited release, and by limited release I mean in one theater in Los Angeles, Don Coscarelli’s adaptation of John Dies at the End did a nice, tidy $13,500. Not too shabby for a film that has been available via VOD for going on two months.

Horror-wise, the month of February will belong to tweeners with the romantic zom-com Warm Bodies opening this Friday and the Cajun-fried Twilight wannabe Beautiful Creatures following two weeks later. Suffice to say, with Twilight over, the studios are scrambling to find a new romantic horror hybrid that appeals to Taylor Swift’s target audience. Think they’ll have better luck than when the studios rolled out their myriad of Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings wannabes? Remember what huge hits The Seeker: The Dark and Eragon were? Me neither.

First Look at Even More Dark Skies Featuring Tara Reid and Cassie Scerbo

While we all are waiting for Dark Skies starring Keri Russell to hit theaters next month, we just got the early word on another new film with the same title. That's right, kids; a Dark Skies began filming just this week.

There is very little information available on it, but here's what we've got so far...

Whether or not the moniker of Dark Skies is a working title or has been finalized is yet to be determined. We also know there are a couple of serious hotties in the film. It's been confirmed that Tara Reid is in the cast as well as Cassie Scerbo. In fact, the set pics you see below are from Scerbo's Instagram account. Also in the cast are John Heard and Ian Ziering.

Apparently at least some of the action in this action/horror flick takes place on a boat, and according to the captions on Scerbo's photos, the film includes guns, choppers and sharks. How's that for intriguing?

More on this one as we get it. Thanks to DC reader Joey M for the heads up. Stay tuned!

Warm Bodies Roundtable Interview: Nicholas Hoult on the Humor and Heart of the Film

$
0
0

On February 1st Jonathan Levine's zombie rom-com Warm Bodies arrives in theaters courtesy of Summit Entertainment. During a recent press day for the flick, Dread Central caught up with the director and several cast members for roundtable interviews in support of the release.

Based on the popular book written by Isaac Marion, the wonderfully charming and thoughtful Warm Bodies follows a zombie named R (Nicholas Hoult), who begins to fall in love with a young girl named Julie (Teresa Palmer) after saving her during a zombie attack. As their connection grows, R begins to de-zombify, which triggers an entire world-changing chain of events that will forever transform the post-apocalyptic world they both now belong to. With a screenplay written by Levine, Warm Bodies also stars Rob Corddry, John Malkovich, Dave Franco and Analeigh Tipton.

First up is our interview with Warm Bodies co-star Hoult, who gave us his thoughts on both the book and the script adaptation of Marion's original story, discussed working with his co-stars Palmer and Corddry, and much more. Check out the highlights from our roundtable interview with Hoult below, and look for more on Warm Bodies all this week.

Question: Were you familiar with the book at all before the movie came along?

Nicholas Hoult:No, I wasn't. I read the script first, and then when I got the part, I went back and read the book then. It's a really great book, too; reading it gave me some great insight into R and more of what's going on inside his brain, and so I took some of that and what was in Jonathan [Levine]'s adaptation of the story and made the character work from there.

Question: Did you go into this thinking it was a straight-up zombie movie but then realized as you went along that it was more of a romantic tale than anything?

Nicholas Hoult:You know, the two films I related Warm Bodies to more than a zombie movie were Edward Scissorhands and Wall-E. I mean, we of course watched a lot of zombie movies, which was great in helping me figure out just what I was supposed to, well, 'do' as a zombie (laughs). But I think it was great to have this story from the zombie's point of view, and the voiceover really helps since I'm a zombie and I can't really talk much. Jonathan wrote R with a great dry and witty sense of humor to him, though, which I really loved.

Question: What do you think made Teresa right for the part of Julie?

Nicholas Hoult:Obviously, she's very bubbly and a great actress and all of those things, but we had done a scene, and at the end of it she came out of it with a smile and gave me a nudge or something. I was doing my zombie thing, but I just remember that when she did it, it made me crack a smile for a moment, and I knew she had the right kind of energy to play this role.

Question: How hard was it communicating in Warm Bodies when your character can only really grunt his responses?

Nicholas Hoult:Well, isn’t that how most men want to communicate (laughs)? No, no, no, no- I'm only joking. Honestly, that [lack of] communication is what really attracted me to the role. It was just one of those strange roles that doesn't come around very often, where you're reading it and you realize that there's a lot to think about when trying to make a role like this work and to get the audience to care about R, too.

So the communication thing was tricky, and so was the physicality of the role, too. We did a lot of messing around in these movement classes beforehand with this guy from Cirque du Soleil, me and Rob [Corddry], and so you just have to hope that when you get to set that it's all going to work out in the end.

Question: Because your character goes through different zombie phases throughout the movie, how did you keep all of that straight within your performance considering you guys didn't shoot this in sequence?

Nicholas Hoult:Jonathan and I sat down before shooting and kind of went through the five or six stages of zombie-ism that R would go through in the movie and developed those. And occasionally Jonathan would be like, "More zombie!""Less zombie!""Grunt more!" or "Now, talk more!" so we would just develop it around the key beats to R's story in the movie, and he kept it all in line for me.

Question: What were the brains like to eat?

Nicholas Hoult:They were this cold, wet spongy stuff made out of grapefruit and peach or something. They weren't particularly enjoyable considering they were covered in fake blood and all that.

Question: I'm sure there was far more of that [brain eating] than what made it into the final cut then.

Nicholas Hoult:Oh yeah, we had to cut a lot out for the rating. There were some pretty dark bits in the movie with scalps being peeled back and then a bunch of hands delving into the brains, which I thought was actually pretty great. Maybe the DVD (laughs).

Question: Can you talk about working with Rob considering his career in comedy and the fact that R's friendship with his character is almost as integral to the story as the romance between your character and Julie?

Nicholas Hoult:Oh sure. Working with him was really difficult because he's such a funny, funny guy that you can't help but laugh. Rob's been in the comedy game for a while now so he's really great at trying new things. I knew whenever I was going into work with him that it was going to be hard to because he was always trying to get me to break first. He'd never break, and it would never fail- we'd be doing a scene and just the way he'd grunt at me or whatever and I'd just lose it. A lot of the humor in the film really comes from him.

Unless you've been living under a rock and haven't seen anything pertaining to the upcoming remake of the Sam Raimi classic Evil Dead, then you know that the filmmakers were shooting an unrated film the entire time. But of course the MPAA weighed in...

Director Fede Alvarez answered a fan's question regarding the film's rating via his Twitter page:

"Was proud of scoring a NC17 when submitted! But we had to cut stuff out to get an R and get the film into theaters." Hopefully this means we'll be getting a nice hard R rating for theatres and then something absolutely insane for its home video bow. Stay tuned.

Ghost House Pictures is producing the much anticipated remake of The Evil Dead, the film that effectively launched the careers of Sam Raimi (Spider-Man franchise, Darkman, Drag Me to Hell), Rob Tapert (30 Days of Night), and Bruce Campbell, who played the Ash character and was co-producer of the original. They are now back to produce an Evil Dead for today's audience that's high on the horror, gore, plot twists, and more from a screenplay written by Fede Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues with Diablo Cody. Executive producers are J.R. Young, Nathan Kahane, Joseph Drake, and Peter Schlessel.
