Billy Bob Thornton Lends Insight into Grizzly Horror Flick Red Machine

$

Actor Billy Bob Thornton has revealed a lot of details pertaining to what to expect when his new horror flick, Red Machine, is unleashed upon the masses. Read on to find out who's on the menu.

As per Thornton's blog:

James Marsden (X-Men, Enchanted) and Thomas Jane (“Hung”, yes, and so good in The Mist) are a pair of estranged brothers who enter the wilderness. Marsden, fresh out of jail, is the ne’er-do-well who has come home to settle some unfinished business. Jane is the town sheriff who helps his fiancée track the local fauna. Their outing in the great white north takes off but goes horribly south when they are attacked, then relentlessly pursued by a monstrous and seriously territorial grizzly bear. This is clearly not Yogi Bear or Gentle Ben territory because this particular specimen of Ursus arctos horribilis goes by the nickname "Red Machine."

Billy Bob plays Douglass, an Alaskan bear tracker whom James Marsden describes as much like Robert Shaw’s Quint character in Jaws. Douglass ain’t quite right in the head, but he knows that bears do more than you-know-what in the woods. The cast includes Adam Beach (Cowboys and Aliens), Scott Glenn (“You spook easily, Starling?”), Kelly Curran (“How I Met Your Mother”), and Michaela McManus (“The Vampire Diaries”). Piper Perabo (The Prestige) plays Thomas Jane’s fiancée, a wilderness-savvy photographer whose ability to survive the escalating danger may be hampered by the fact that she is deaf.

Oh, and if you're wondering, in the film Billy Bob gets to: "ride a horse, hunt a bear, mysteriously appear and disappear in the woods." Too funny.

More soon.

In the UK? Here's the Grimm Up North Winter Screening Schedule!

Grimm Up North, Manchester's home of horror and cult films, is continuing its monthly movie nights in the new year, and we have all the info you need on the upcoming Mon Ami/Chop, The Tall Man/Martyrs, and Citadel/Sleep Tight screenings.

First up on January 31st are two new hilarious black comedies that have both made waves on the international film festival circuit: Mon Ami and Chop.

MON AMI: Two slacker hardware store clerks decide to kidnap their boss’ daughter and hold her to ransom. Things don’t go according to plan, and they are left with a body to dispose of. Then things start to get a whole lot worse. Pitched somewhere between Clerks, The Cottage, and the films of Martin McDonagh, this droll, deadpan, darkly comic gem has been garnering critical acclaim, rapturous audience response, and nice shiny awards wherever it plays. Regional premiere.

CHOP: An obnoxious yuppie has his life - and ultimately his body - pulled apart by a mysterious figure from his past with an inexplicable grudge. By turns nasty, gory, and grimly hilarious, this is a movie that traces its lineage back to the outrageous cult exploiters of the infamous Troma studios; a joyously mean-spirited and flat-out weird little romp that marks the directorial debut of cult actor and screenwriter of the critically-acclaimed Deadgirl, Trent Haaga.

Venue: Stockport Plaza. Start time: 7.15pm. Click here for ticket info.

Mon Ami and Chop - In the UK? Here's the Grimm Up North Winter Screening Schedule!

Next, on February 7th, it's Pascal Laugier night with the regional premiere of his latest feature, The Tall Man, alongside Martyrs, the film that made him (in)famous.

THE TALL MAN: In a small, rundown Canadian mining town, children have begun disappearing on a regular basis, and the abductions are being blamed on a local legend, known as “The Tall Man”. When her own child disappears, a young widow is forced to investigate. But nothing is quite as it seems... Drawing on the urban myth of the slender man, this new film from Pascal Laugier confounds all expectations by focusing not on graphic cruelty and visceral horror, but on psychological unease, unfolding mystery, and social observation. But the end result remains the same - the film will both unsettle you and make you think about what you have seen.

MARTYRS: A young woman’s quest for revenge against the people who kidnapped and tortured her as a child leads her and a friend and fellow victim into a terrifying world of cold-blooded cruelty and horror. This cold, clinical exploration of the nature of cruelty is one of the most harrowing, horrifying cinema experiences of recent years. Not so much sadistic as Sadean, it combines some of the most shocking scenes ever committed to camera with a philosophical debate on the nature of martyrdom and spiritual transcendence. This is a film that fits form to subject matter, in which the audience members genuinely finds themselves dreading what will happen next and wondering why exactly they have chosen to subject themselves to such a grueling experience. A truly challenging and confrontational film in every respect, it is most definitely not for the squeamish or the faint of heart.

Venue: Stockport Plaza. Start time: 7.15pm. Click here for ticket info.

The Tall Man and Martyrs - In the UK? Here's the Grimm Up North Winter Screening Schedule!

Finally, on February 21st, is the best of the bunch: a double-bill of Citadel and Sleep Tight.

CITADEL: The dilapidated suburbia of Edenstown casts a shadow over Tommy Cowley’s life. Trapped there by his agoraphobia since his wife was fatally attacked by twisted feral children, he now finds himself terrorized by the same mysterious hooded gang, who seem intent on taking his baby daughter. Torn between the help of an understanding nurse and a vigilante priest, he discovers that to be free of his fears, he must finally face the demons of his past and enter the one place that he fears the most... the abandoned tower block known as the "Citadel." Making strong use of its dark, dank urban locations, this critically acclaimed, chokingly claustrophobic psychological horror film brings a whole new meaning to the term “feral youth.”

SLEEP TIGHT: Apartment concierge Cesar is a bitter, hateful man who believes he was born without the ability to be happy. As a result, he makes it his mission to make life hell for everyone around him. Most tenants are easy to agitate, but Clara (Marta Etura) proves to be more of a challenge. So Cesar goes to increasingly disturbing extremes to push her towards a breakdown. The latest thriller from Spanish maestro Jaume Balaguero (Nameless, [REC]), this bone-chilling study in misanthropy and manipulation takes the terrors of home invasion and psychological assault to their very darkest place and features a truly terrifying performance from Luis Tosar as Cesar.

Venue: The Dancehouse. Start time: 7.30pm. Tickets on sale soon.

We’re already big fans of the first one, which was super scary and smart,” said Memento head of international sales Tanja Meissner. “This one takes it to another level. S-VHS is produced by The Collective, Salient Media and Brad Miska and Tom Owen’s Bloody Disgusting.

Synopsis:
S-VHS / USA, Canada (directors: Simon Barrett, Adam Wingard, Edúardo Sanchez, Gregg Hale, Timo Tjahjanto, Gareth Huw Evans, Jason Eisener; screenwriters: Simon Barrett, Jamie Nash, Timo Tjahjanto & Gareth Huw Evans, John Davies) — Searching for a missing student, two private investigators break into his abandoned house and find another collection of mysterious VHS tapes. In viewing the horrific contents of each cassette, they realize there may be terrifying motives behind the student’s disappearance.

The Frankenstein Theory Explained at Home

Image Entertainment has just provided us with the cover art and DVD information for its upcoming release of The Frankenstein Theory, and we can't wait to stitch this one into our own home video collection!

From the Press Release
Before Robert De Niro, before Christopher Lee or even Boris Karloff, there was the original novel: Frankenstein. Published in 1818 and written by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, it is universally recognized as one of the greatest works of horror fiction in the English language. But what if it wasn’t conjecture? What if the story of how one man dared to steal the secret of creation was true?

Image Entertainment will challenge all that you know, or think you know, with The Frankenstein Theory. Directed by Andrew Weiner, The Frankenstein Theory premieres on VOD and select theatrical engagements on March 1st, with the DVD release set for March 26th.

What if the most chilling novel of all time was actually based on a true account of an horrific experiment gone awry? When he is suspended from his university job for his outlandish ideas, Professor John Venkenheim leads a documentary film crew to the rim of the Arctic Circle in a desperate effort to vindicate his academic reputation. The object of his ridicule? His obscure theory that Shelley's literary classic is, in fact, a work of non-fiction disguised as fantasy. In the vast, frozen wilderness, Venkenheim and his team search for the legendary monster, a creature nearly three hundred years old and still cloaked in mystery. What they find is an unspeakable truth more terrifying than any fiction…

The Tomorrow People Gets a Green Light from The CWAnother new pilot in the sci-fi vein has been greenlit by The CW, and since this one comes from Julie Plec ("The Vampire Diaries") and Greg Berlanti ("Arrow"), we thought it worth mentioning.

Per Deadline, Berlanti and Plec will executive produce "The Tomorrow People," an adaptation of the cult British 1970s sci-fi series. It will be written/exec produced by Phil Klemmer ("Chuck").

In the vein of X-Men and "Heroes,""The Tomorrow People" is the story of several young people from around the world who represent the next stage in human evolution, possessing special powers, including the ability to teleport and communicate with each other telepathically. Together they work to defeat the forces of evil.

Created by Roger Price, The Tomorrow People, ITV’s answer to BBC’s Dr. Who, ran on the commercial broadcaster for eight seasons from 1973-1979. It developed a strong cult following and was a favorite of Berlanti and Plec, who are good friends from college.

Okay, zombie fans, this one is for you. We've dug our flesh-eating claws deep into the interwebs and come up with two new clips for you from Dead Weight Productions'Mimesis: Night of the Living Dead! Have a mouthful!

From the Press Release
Why watch a horror film when you can live one? For over a century, fans have had their blood curdled and spines chilled by the vicarious thrills of horror films. Whether populated by ghouls, slashers, zombies or vampires, fans flocked to have their pulse quickened and exercise their scream-generating skills. But one thing remained constant: Eventually the story ended because it was only a movie. What if it didn’t have to end? What if the next level of horror was to experience a horror film from the inside?

Already the fan and critical favorite from over 15 notable film festivals, Anchor Bay Entertainment presents the next evolutionary turn in horror entertainment with the February 12th release of Mimesis on Blu-ray™ and DVD. Starring genre favorites Courtney Gains (Children of the Corn, Back to the Future) and Sid Haig (Rob Zombie’s Halloween, The Devil’s Rejects, House of 1000 Corpses), with a special cameo by original Night of the Living Dead star Bill Hinzman and featuring a song from the multi-platinum selling band Insane Clown Posse, Mimesis is already on its way to becoming the next great cult horror film! SRP is $24.99 for the Blu-ray™ and $22.98 for the DVD. Fans will also have the opportunity to experience Mimesis at special event screenings across the country.

*Mimesis, as defined by Merriam Webster Dictionary: “imitation, mimicry.”

Mimesis’ inventive concept has won over fans at festivals spanning the globe, including FesTerror in Barcelona; Fantastic Estepona in Spain, where it won awards for Best Director and Best Original Score; the Shock Stock Horror Convention in Ontario, Canada; CineQuest in San Jose; the Los Angeles Fear & Fantasy Film Festival, where it won Honorable Mention for Best Picture; awarded Best Screenplay at the La Samain du Cinema Fantastique in Nice, France and most recently winning Best Feature Film at the 2012 Living Dead Film Festival.

In the film a group of horror fans find themselves unwilling participants in a living nightmare that pays homage to a classic horror film. Seven complete strangers whose only common link is a love for classic era horror films are invited to attend an exclusive “horror fan” party at a remote farm. But as the sun sets, these strangers soon find themselves within a real life version of the 1968 George Romero cult horror classic Night of the Living Dead!

Mimesis is directed by Douglas Schulze, with screenplay by Joshua Wagner and Schulze. Kurt Eli Mayry, Schulze and Gavin Grazer produced, with original music composed by Diego Navarro.
