Thanatomorphose Producer Coughs Up Trailer for H5N1: PandemoniumFresh off producing the intriguing film Thanatomorphose, Stephan Parent (the filmmaker, not the Manson Family victim, that was Steven Parent) now has a trailer for an upcoming film he's directing entitled H5N1: Pandemonium.

We don't have much information on the film, and the trailer doesn't do much more than tease, but that's kind of fun too, no?

Anyway, check out the trailer below and the sites for H5N1: Pandemonium and Thanatomorphose.

Synopsis
Gangsters vs. zombies. Two former gangster brothers kidnap a bar owner because of money he owes them and in the process end up holding all the bar's patrons hostage, but a surprise awaits them ... the H5N1 virus, which turns its victims into zombies hellbent on violence and carnage.

Adam Green Talks Hatchet III and Holliston

0

Sometimes you guys end up missing valuable tidbits of info contained in other stories (such as interviews) that you didn't read all the way through. Totally fine and understandable; there's a lot of content here. That's why sometimes we'll pull select items and bring them to your attention. This is one of those times.

In our recent set of Chillerama interviews Adam Green spoke with our own Sean Decker about a couple of upcoming projects--namely, Hatchet III and the FEARnet television series "Holliston".

In regard to the status of the third film in the Hatchet franchise (which will star the returning Kane Hodder as hillbilly slasher Victor Crowley and Danielle Harris as the flick’s final girl), “It’s supposed to start shooting in April,” revealed Green. “I’ve been working with the director, BJ McDonnell, and developing the script, and he’s been shooting (as camera operator) Tom Cruise’s new movie One Shot, which doesn’t wrap until Christmas Eve. I’ve been so busy with Chillerama and "Holliston" and Killer Pizza (the latter is a property Green’s been developing with Greg Taylor that has been acquired by MGM, which revolves around a 14-year-old kid who takes a summer pizzeria job only to find that it’s secretly a front for a monster-hunting organization) that I haven’t really had a chance to work on Hatchet III. But once he gets back into town, we are going to sit down and really start ironing it out.

We have all of the ideas,” Green continued of Hatchet III, “and I’ve had the story since I made the second film, but I really want to give BJ a chance to have his influence on it as a director, which has been fun because normally with most of the stuff it’s like I run the show, but now answering to someone else where I’m like, ‘What about this?’ and he’s like,’ Well, that’s cool, but what about this?’ and they are great ideas and then I’m back to the drawing board is exciting. I’m excited he’s putting his imprint on it. One of the important things was - without giving away what’s going to happen at the end - is that I want him to feel like he came up with what happens at the end of the film because he’s directing the movie, and I don’t want it to be just him exercising my ideas. I want his input, and he’s really embraced that and has been working hard, which is another reason why I feel like I made the right choice. BJ’s out for blood with Hatchet III, and he’s dying to do this, and he’s plotting and scheming. It’ll also be exciting to kind of kick back and watch them make the movie and to be there to help and to advise, but it’s like sending your kid off to college.

As for the series "Holliston," which posits Green and Lynch as two aspiring filmmakers who host a late-night cable access program titled "The Movie Crypt" (FEARnet is describing the series as "Wayne’s World meets Saw") Green said, “We just wrapped production, and last night in Austin, Texas, Joe [Lynch] and I did a charity event for disabled veterans where we showed some of Chillerama and then we showed the first ever footage from "Holliston", and I was very nervous because it’s a real sitcom and not one that makes fun of or is an homage to sitcoms, so I didn’t know what to expect of their reaction. You could tell during the first two minutes that the crowd was like, ‘Holy shit, this is so weird,’ and then they were so into it by the end. When we finished with the last clip, it was like an uproarious cheering applause, which was a great start to it. I hope the horror community gets behind it because it’s a risky thing for FEARnet to produce. It’s going to be their first show, and we aren’t doing what anyone expects. We are making a sitcom for our audience and our friends if they talked about the kind of stuff that we are into and if they randomly stabbed each other sometimes. Random acts of violence and the fact that [GWAR’s] Oderus Urungus is my character’s imaginary friend on the show? No other network would allow us to do that.

Robert Rodriguez Offers Update on Predators Sequel

Robert Rodriguez Offers Update on Predators SequelPredators came incredibly close to being the movie we were all hoping that it would be. Unfortunately, it just missed the mark. We've all been waiting patiently for an update on a possible sequel, and thankfully it's finally come.

The Playlist caught up with Robert Rodriguez recently, who dropped the following on hopeful fans ...

"I haven't talked to them [Fox] in a while. I know they liked the idea of doing another one. I should probably call and check in. I've just been busy doing these other things."

Maybe if these things sparkled in sunlight, the sequel would have a better chance of getting greenlit. Someone get on that!

Hopefully this isn't a permanent affliction for the director of Haute Tension, The Hills Have Eyes, and Piranha 3D. We can't imagine waking up one day and ... Huh? Oh. Never mind. Another adaptation is on its way!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, director Alexandre Aja is teaming up with scary storyteller Joe Hill on the feature adaptation of Hill’s novel Horns, being made by Mandalay Pictures.

Aja is coming on board to direct the project about a 26-year-old man who wakes up with a massive hangover and discovers horns sprouting from his head. He becomes convinced that their existence is tied to the unsolved murder of his girlfriend.

Scott Bunin wrote the script adaptation of the novel, which was published in February 2010. Hill, also the writer of the horror comic book series Locke & Key and the son of author Stephen King, is executive producing.

Mandate is packaging the project and is in the middle of securing financing. The goal is to have Aja direct the movie in late spring or early summer 2012 before moving on to Cobra, a sci-fi pirate movie based on manga source material.

A week before the premiere of its first original movie, Steve Niles’ Remains, Chiller TV will whet viewers’ appetites for zombies with the debut of a special online-only prequel, Remains: Road to Reno. This eleven-minute webisode, produced exclusively for Chillertv.com, will debut online Friday, December 9th, and will give viewers a glimpse at the origins of Remains’ post-apocalyptic zombie invasion.

At the outset of the film (premiering Friday, December 16th at 10:00 pm on Chiller), a radioactive blast transforms every tourist and local in Reno, Nevada, into mindless, ravenous zombies. But before the action begins in Reno, somewhere just outside the city a lone mechanic (Morgan West) is learning first-hand what’s required to survive the undead.

With Remains: Road to Reno, Chiller’s official prequel to Steve Niles’ Remains, viewers can head back before the blast to watch as the virus descends upon an isolated gas station. Imagined by writer Steve Niles, this exclusive online event reveals the origins of Remains characters - both alive and undead - and pits zombie against zombie on the blood-soaked road to Reno. Remains: Road to Reno is written by John Doolan and directed by Colin Theys (who wrote and directed, respectively, the film).

Colin Firth Drops Out of Oldboy Running

Colin Firth Drops Out of Oldboy RunningAround a month ago news hit the interwebs that Colin Firth was in the running to star as the big bad in the upcoming Spike Lee remake of the Korean revenge classic Oldboy. Sadly, that's no longer the case.

The boys over at Twitch reported today that, "Firth confirm[ed] the offer in subsequent interviews while playing coy about his intended response, but had he taken the role on, it would have seen him playing Josh Brolin's tormentor in the story of a man kidnapped and imprisoned for years without explanation. Well, they're going to need to find another kidnapper. Twitch has learned that Firth has now officially passed on the project, meaning they need to find someone else to play opposite Brolin in what is being planned as an early 2012 shoot."

In case you've been living under a rock, the story centers on a man who is kidnapped on his daughter’s birthday and held for 15 years in solitary confinement without explanation. He is eventually released and sets out on a path to take revenge on those who destroyed his life.

Actress Annabeth Gish Discusses Bag of Bones and More

Actress Annabeth Gish Discusses Bag of Bones and MoreOn Sunday, December 11th, A&E is set to debut director Mick Garris' latest endeavor, the television mini-series adaptation of Stephen King's classic novel Bag of Bones, which explores the themes of grief and lost love's enduring bonds, an innocent child caught in a terrible crossfire, and a new love haunted by past secrets.

In the story we meet bestselling novelist Mike Noonan (Pierce Brosnan), who is unable to stop grieving after the sudden death of his wife, Jo (Annabeth Gish). A dream inspires him to return to the couple's lakeside retreat in western Maine, where he becomes involved in a custody battle between the daughter of an attractive young widow and the child's enormously wealthy grandfather while also deailing with mysterious ghostly visitations, ever-escalating nightmares, and the realization that his late wife still has something to tell him.

Recently Dread Central had the opportunity along with several other journalists to take part in a conference call interview with Gish to talk with the actress regarding her role in "Bag of Bones," her experiences working on the mini-series, and what keeps the actress coming back to the genre world time and time again. Check out our interview coverage below, and make sure to tune in to "Bag of Bones" when it premieres this Sunday at 9/8 CST with Part Two following the next night, December 12th.

Reporter: (Spoiler Alert) Why were you compelled to take this role, especially since you technically die within the first 10 minutes?

Annabeth Gish: Of course every actress wants to be featured throughout a project in order to fulfill her storyline, but I felt like the character of Jo was so clearly drawn and her essence is throughout the film so in that sense she kind of resonates from beginning to end. I also wanted to say yes for several [other] reasons. I’ve worked with Mick Garris before, and I adore him. It was another Stephen King project which I thought was great, and I really respect Mick's work immensely.

Reporter: Was there anything physically challenging required when making "Bag Of Bones" that was tough for you?

Gish: Definitely. This project was very physically challenging for me in terms of prosthetics because I had to do a four-hour makeup job to become the zombie/ghost Jo. That for me became very scary. I'm very claustrophobic, and you have to wear all of this gunk all over your body - that was challenging enough right there. But then there was the scene I had to do under the bed that was really challenging. Sure, we'd all hide under the bed when we were children, but I don’t know when I’ve been under the bed recently, and they had to pull me with great velocity from under the bed. It was pretty crazy.

Reporter: Do you find yourself attracted to horror and, more specifically, Stephen King?

Gish: Yes, but not horror for horror’s sake. Between "The X-Files" and my two Stephen King projects, it’s not horror for horror's sake. It’s not to scare the bejeezus out of everyone; it has to be a story with real drama, real heart, and mystery. And I think that’s what kind of delineates this project because it’s not just about zombies. It’s about three love affairs and solving a mystery. This is about race, it’s about genealogy, and it really spans a lot of things people will be drawn to watch it for.

Reporter: What were your experiences like collaborating with Mick again (Gish and Garris also worked on "Desperation" together in 2006)?

Gish: I really think Mick is an exquisite filmmaker, and I love how his sensibilities are a lot like mine in terms of storytelling. He really has a great skill as a director, and I absolutely trusted him while making this movie. I knew from the beginning it was going to be beautiful and something special; hopefully audiences agree.

Reporter: Is there something that scares you specifically?

Gish: Yes, actually I’m pretty scare-able. It’s probably why I like doing horror because my imagination takes me places. I kind of believe in ghosts; I believe that spirits can exist and wander around. So that definitely scares me. But I feel like the things that really scare me are catastrophic events, like my children, husband, family being harmed - something like that.

Reporter: You mentioned earlier that you didn’t want to choose projects just for the sake of horror - that it was a combination of story, plot, character, and other elements that you need as well. Are there any horror films that off the top of your head you’d consider touchstones of that model?

Gish: Recently I saw Insidious with Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne, and it scared the bejeezus out of me. Even though I was scared, I couldn’t turn it off because it was so intriguing. That’s a recent example of a horror story that captivated me the entire time - and again, that was because there were so many human and complex issues going on beyond the horror.

Reporter: As someone who has done both television and film - with storytelling possibilities in film constricting and possibilities in TV expanding - what’s your take on both mediums as an actress?

Gish: I think television is definitely the 'Wild West' now. Between the internet and television right now, it feels like it's all going to break wide open, especially as you see how many film actors are coming to TV - it’s kind of the place to be. However, you can’t replicate the experience of going to the movie theater and getting popcorn and watching the big screen. There’s still that experience that you can’t recreate at home. But it seems like it’s an expansive time for everything these days, and film will have to continue to expand; otherwise, people are going to stop going to movies, and that would be sad.

A Trailer Lands for Brian Kazmarck's Terminal Legacy

    0
    0

It was this past summer when we last heard anything about Brian Kazmarck's sci-fi/horror thriller Terminal Legacy, but now a trailer has arrived that we're happy to share. In addition we've learned the film has a projected release date of spring 2012.

    As a refresher, here's a synopsis/message from Kazmarck:

Terminal Legacy is an exciting apocalyptic sci-fi thriller about a team of three scientists whose attempt at creating the ultimate miracle drug horribly backfires. In the wake of an outbreak within their facility, they must race to prevent the remaining patients from escaping as well as dealing with their own divisive motivations.

Our film is unique among its cinematic brethren in that it's an apocalyptic/zombie movie told from the point of view of the men responsible for the "outbreak" and is told as the outbreak starts. It is not told in the aftermath, nor is it about some ragtag group of survivors filling cliche, stereotypical roles. You could say that it combines the best of I Am Legend and The Crazies and would serve as a prequel to either of those films.

The film has two central characters who are foils to one another. Will Taylor (Cuyle Carvin) is the lead scientist behind the creation of the miracle drug, based on a molecular phenomenon he calls "mirror life." Will is successful, bright, rational, even-keeled; has a beautiful wife; and yet goes about this experiment underhandedly by taking a very dubious short cut: being financed by a ruthless, shadowy entrepreneur. He even keeps the truth of the experiment from his patients and his wife.

Jordan Kovalsky (Kazy Tauginas) is Will's foil. Desperate for cash and short on temper, he enrolls in this experiment under the impression that it will cure his aching migraines. Jordan is unemployed, is street-wise and hot-tempered, and meets Lindsey (Tationna Bosier), a young, vulnerable girl during the trial period. When all hell breaks loose inside the medical compound, he, Lindsey, and deranged patient Keith must navigate the complex hallways and dodge the "infected" patients in order to get to freedom. A freedom that Will and his team are desperate to keep him from.

Whitney Kirk and Victor Verhaeghe co-star in this Open Fire Films production.

Hey, kids! It's time for your daily dosage of non-news, which is when all the major websites on the Internet pick up stories that contain no real news but are littered with buzz words that will serve to get themselves traffic! Hooray!

During an interview for his latest film, The Sitter, director David Gordon Green spoke a bit about how, if at all, the success of Black Swan has helped push along his remake of Dario Argento's Suspiria.

Green told Coming Soon, "No, that adds to it. That means there’s an audience for prestige in genre, and to me that’s exciting. We’re really close to getting that movie made; if I can get over a couple more budgetary hurdles, I think I can pull it off. My version doesn’t really have any similarities to Black Swan, but it proves to the marketplace that you can take a great risk and you can have something that has great artistic ambition but also has incredible commercial appeal."

I mean, can anyone think of a more "commercial" film than Argento's Suspiria? Hello? Anyone there? Um ...

Curious about the new documentary from Alex Stapleton, Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel? Well, your curiosity is about to pay off as we've gotten our hands on three clips from the film for you guys to check out.

    Synopsis
Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel (review here) is a tantalizing and star-studded tribute to Roger Corman, Hollywood’s most prolific writer-director, producer, and seminal influencing force in modern moviemaking over the last 60 years. Featuring interviews with Hollywood icons and cinematic luminaries, some of whom launched their careers within Corman’s unforgettable world of filmmaking, including Paul W.S. Anderson, Peter Bogdanovich, Robert De Niro, Peter Fonda, Pam Grier, Ron Howard, Eli Roth, Martin Scorsese, William Shatner and Jack Nicholson, along with many others, this documentary chronicles how Corman created his cult film empire, one low-budget success at a time, capitalizing on undiscovered talent and pushing the boundaries of independent filmmaking.

Director Alex Stapleton weaves archival footage following Roger’s illustrious career from his early days of genre-defining classics including the original Fast and Furious, the original Little Shop of Horrors, The Crybaby Killer, The Intruder, House of Usher, and The Wild Angels (which at that point in 1966 was his 100th film) to present day video of him and his wife, Julie, on location, still at work as they continue to produce and distribute films outside the studio system: fast, cheap, and out-of-this-world! Distributed by Anchor Bay Films, Corman’s World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel is rated R for some violent images, nudity, and language. Its runtime is 90 minutes.

Corman’s World’s: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel opens on December 16th in New York City (Village East Cinema) and Los Angeles (Nuart Theater).

More Behind-the-Scenes Videos from American Horror StoryThere's a lot to be said for looking back before moving forward, and luckily for fans of "American Horror Story", FX seems to agree with that sentiment because today they've released more behind-the-scenes videos for the series that examine the casting process for the show as well as what went into filming Episodes 1.09, "Spooky Little Girl", and 1.10, "Smoldering Children".

First, casting director Eric Dawson fills us in on choosing the perfect actors for the Harmons and their merry band of ghosts. Next, cinematographer Michael Goi discusses the "Black Dahlia" episode along with actors Frances Conroy (Moira) and Matt Ross (Charles Montgomery). Lastly, we learn the true story behind Larry (Denis O'Hare)'s burns and get an up close look at a stunt burn.

"American Horror Story", co-created by former "Nip/Tuck" executive producers and current "Glee" co-creators/executive producers Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, revolves around The Harmons, a family of three who move from Boston to Los Angeles as a means to reconcile past anguish. The all star cast features Dylan McDermott ("The Practice") as “Ben Harmon,” a psychiatrist; Connie Britton ("Friday Night Lights") as “Vivien Harmon,” Ben’s wife; Taissa Farmiga as “Violet,” the Harmons’ teenage daughter; Jessica Lange (Tootsie, Blue Sky, Grey Gardens) in her first-ever regular series TV role as “Constance,” the Harmons’ neighbor; Evan Peters ("One Tree Hill") plays “Tate Langdon,” one of Ben’s patients; and Denis O’Hare ("The Good Wife") as “Larry Harvey.”

1313: Bigfoot Island promises to be the ultimate war between shirtless young men with no body hair and the hairiest movie monster of them all. No clean-shaven lad will be safe when they ditch their tops, enter the forest, and face the hirsute horror of an angry Sasquatch.

    Synopsis:
On an island in the Pacific Northwest, a young woman calls to ancient spirits in order to right the wrongs inflicted on her. For this she summons the mythical beast that has long been rumored to roam the verdant forests. Nearby a young man readies a cabin for the arrival of his friends. They’ve been coming to this place every year since they were kids, to relax and shape up before the start of a new college year. Only this time they’re about to meet their worst nightmare.

This movie puts me in a horrible bind. On the one hand this is a Bigfoot movie, and as a connoisseur of Sasquatchploitation I am obligated to watch 1313: Bigfoot Island. On the other hand this is one of the latest in David DeCoteau’s increasingly prolific line of “1313” homoerotic horror movies that put more emphasis on shooting muscular young men in their underwear in slow motion than actually trying to be a genuine motion picture. I don’t begrudge his films being homoerotic. I begrudge his films being utterly pointless and soul-crushingly boring. My love for nature gone amok movies coerced me into watching 1313: Giant Killer Bees! (review here), and I’d proclaim it the single worst movie I watched all year except I don’t consider it to have been an actual movie.

I will say that the 1313: Bigfoot Island trailer does give me hope that there might actually be more of an effort to make a real movie out of it. In fact, a lack of underwear shots has already prompted one fan of DeCoteau’s “1313” series to prematurely post a one-star review of this yet-to-be released movie on Amazon based solely on the trailer and his perceived lack of guys in their underwear. “Toasterlad” writes:

There's only one reason to watch a David DeCoteau movie: hot buff guys running around in their skivvies. Just watched the trailer for this movie: no underwear shots at all (if you've ever seen a DeCoteau trailer, you know they're pretty much nothing BUT undie shots). Shirtless guys, yes, many, many shirtless shots, but nothing briefer than cargo shorts. Especially given that the 1313 series has gotten progressively stupider and lazier, there doesn't seem to be any reason at all to pick this up.

Not enough underwear shots for your taste? Judge for yourself by watching the trailer below. Then find out for yourself when 1313: Bigfoot Island chases shirtless men through the woods on DVD and VOD on March 6th.

Cold Sweat Puddles Up at Home

We've been talking about Adrián García Bogliano's horror flick Cold Sweat ( or Sudor Frío for you purists out there) for the better part of a year now. The flick is finally on its way home, and we have all the details you need to get prepped! Dig it!

    From the Press Release
Barely 30 years old, writer-director Adrián García Bogliano has more than a dozen horror features and short films under his belt, and he tops himself in COLD SWEAT, a pulse-pounding horror thriller whose title aptly describes what it produces in audiences. A sensation at the 2011 SXSW festival, it will chill the bones of home viewers when it arrives on DVD on January 17, 2012, from Dark Sky Films and MPI Media Group. It carries an SRP of $24.98.

With films like 36 Steps, I’ll Never Die Alone, Watch ’em Die, and Rooms for Tourists, Bogliano has quickly established himself as a master whose work transcends the limits of horror and suspense – even garnering a Critic’s Choice notice in The New York Times. COLD SWEAT may be his most effective effort to date.

When Roman’s girlfriend Jackie disappears, he expects to find her in the arms of another man. And, with the help of a friend, find her he does – but there is no lover on the scene, only a pair of demented old men keeping her locked away in the basement of their crumbling mansion. Armed with wild-eyed, reactionary political ideals and case after case of decades-old and highly unstable explosives, the villainous duo are conducting illicit experiments on a string of young women lured to their home via the Internet. With Jackie doused in nitroglycerine, her every step toward escape is fraught with the possibility of sudden death. If Roman cannot free his young love, she is likely to end up in pieces.

A delirious, old-school horror picture with the most memorable villains in years at its core, COLD SWEAT was a huge hit at the SXSW festival thanks to its creator’s wild imagination and sense of showmanship. Loaded with memorable characters and stylish action, it’s a shocker that never fails to entertain.

Starring Facundo Espinosa (The Motorcycle Diaries), Marina Glezer (Valentin), and Camila Velasco as the unfortunate girlfriend who must very carefully strip off all of her nitro-soaked clothes, COLD SWEAT has been called “a highly volatile mix of The Wages of Fear (1953) and ‘torture porn’ tropes, with an uncomfortable grounding in political reality” (Anton Bitel, Sight and Sound), whose director “constructs suspense so skillfully here” (Fred Topel, Screen Junkies).

With [REC] 3: Genesis on its way to Spanish theatres on March 30th, 2012, the hype wheel is beginning to spin overseas in terms of promotion. Today via the flick's official Facebook page, we got a look at the theatrical standee. Dig it!

Leticia Dolera (Spanish Movie, Semen, A Love Story, "White Glove") and Diego Martin (Three Meters Above the Sky, "There Is No One Alive") both star in [REC] 3: Genesis.

In '[REC] 3: Genesis' the action now takes place miles away from the original location and partly in broad daylight, giving the film an entirely fresh yet disturbing new reality. The infection has left the building. In a clever twist that draws together the plots of the first two movies, this third part of the saga also works as a decoder to uncover information hidden in the first two films and leaves the door open for the final installment, the future '[REC] 4 Apocalypse.'

A Couple of Previews of Tonight's Episode of Grimm - The Three Bad Wolves

NBC shook things up a bit this week by scheduling an extra installment of "Grimm" last night, but sadly, it was one of the weakest eps we've seen thus far. Hopefully the show will get back on track tonight with "The Three Bad Wolves". While we wait to find out if it does, check out this pair of promo videos for the episode featuring our favorite Blutbad, Monroe.

Inspired by Grimms' fairy tales, "Grimm" follows Portland homicide Detective Nick Burkhardt, played by David Giuntoli, as he battles supernatural forces. Bitsie Tulloch portrays his fiancée, Juliette Silverton, with Russell Hornsby as his partner, Hank Griffin, and Silas Weir Mitchell as his confidant, Monroe. Reggie Lee and Sasha Roiz co-star. It is produced by Universal Television with Hazy Mills Prods. and GK Prods. Sean Hayes, Todd Milliner, David Greenwalt, Jim Kouf, Naren Shankar, and Norberto Barba are executive producers.

"The Three Bad Wolves" Synopsis (Airing 12/9/11):
Nick and Hank investigate the explosion of a Blutbad's home, which exposes a longstanding family feud that brings Monroe face-to-face with characters from his troubled past. While Monroe wrestles with restraining his wild side, it's up to Nick to keep everything from going up in flames.

    The clips are as follows:

"Hap's Main Man" - Monroe has a surprising connection to the victim on Nick's latest case.

"Call of the Wild" - Monroe gives in to temptation when his Blutbad ex-girlfriend comes to town.
