Gawk at the New One-Sheet for Tribeca Film's Rubberneck Release

0
0

We've been talking about Alex Karpovsky's Rubberneck for a while now, and with its VOD and limited theatrical release quickly approaching, Tribeca Film has finally unveiled its poster art by designer Teddy Blanks.

Rubberneck will be available nationwide on VOD starting February 19th. It will also screen in a double feature with Karpovsky's road trip comedy Red Flag at Film Society of Lincoln Center’s Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center starting February 22nd, complete with opening weekend Q&A's with the director.

Rubberneck is directed and co-written (with Garth Donovan) by Alex Karpovsky, who also stars in the film. A slow-burn character study-turned-psychosexual thriller, Rubberneck is a chillingly believable story of workplace romance gone wrong that co-stars Jaime Ray Newman and Dennis Staroselsky and was produced by Donovan, Michael Bowes, and Adam Roffman.

Synopsis:
Paul Harris is a scientist at a small research facility on the outskirts of Boston. After a weekend tryst with Danielle, an attractive and promiscuous co-worker, leaves him wanting more, his unreciprocated desires gradually mold into an acute infatuation over the following months. When Danielle takes interest in a new researcher at the laboratory, Paul's suppressed resentments and perverse delusions finally become unhinged, triggering an horrific course of events that mercilessly engulf a tortured past and fugitive present. A slow-burning, character-driven psychosexual thriller, Rubberneck navigates through the binds of childhood, the underpinnings of obsessions, and our sadistic inability to look away.

Kids. They don't shut up, end up breaking all your stuff, and will most likely cost you an arm and a leg for whatever remains of your life. If that's not enough, some of them have to go and get possessed by demons. Being a parent sucks.

From the Press Release
MindPlate.tv has released the much-awaited debut trailer for the independent horror film Speak No Evil. This disturbing trailer haunts the viewer, giving glimpses of demonic children, a twisted exorcism, and a possessed Gabrielle Stone.

Gabrielle completed five feature films last year, including Speak No Evil, and is considered to be an up-and-coming actor on the independent film circuit, following in the footsteps of her mother, Scream Queen Dee Wallace-Stone. “I cannot express what an amazing experience making this film was for me,” says Gabrielle. “Roze is such an amazingly talented director and human being. The way his creativity transcends to the screen is something I've never seen before.”

“It’s in Gabrielle’s DNA to scare the hell out of people,” says Roze, writer/director of Speak No Evil. “This movie was made for the people who say horror films aren't scary anymore."

Speak No Evil is expected to begin a limited theatrical run this summer and release worldwide through MindPlate.tv

Synopsis:
A single mother (Stone) fights to protect her daughter from demonically possessed children and a town gone mad.

Doctor Who Knows How to Catch a MonsterAnother bit of casting news has come in for Ryan Gosling's directorial debut, the horror flick How to Catch a Monster, as one of the finest exports from across the pond has signed on to face off against an altogether different beast.

Matt Smith ("Doctor Who") will be the film's male lead, and he joins the previously announced Eva Mendes, Rob Zabrecky, Ben Mendelsohn, and Christina Hendricks.

The film is set against the surreal dreamscape of a vanishing city where Billy (Hendricks), a single mother of two, is swept into a macabre and dark fantasy underworld while her teenage son discovers a secret road leading to an underwater town. She must dive deep into the mystery, if the family is to survive.

How to Catch a Monster will be produced by Marc Platt Productions, which worked on Gosling's 2011 crime thriller Drive. In a statement Platt called the actor's latest project a "beautifully haunting script," adding that Gosling's "ability to draw audiences into his world as an actor will serve him well as a filmmaker."

EFM 2013: Charlize Theron Officially Visiting Dark PlacesAround a week ago we told you that Charlize Theron was in talks for the lead role in the adaptation of Gillian Flynn's novel Dark Places. Today it's become official. Read on for details.

From the Press Release
Academy Award winning actress Charlize Theron (SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMEN, PROMETHEUS, MONSTER) will star in and produce the film adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s best-selling novel Dark Places to be written and directed by Gilles Paquet-Brenner (SARAH’S KEY), it was announced today by Exclusive Media’s Co-Chairmen Nigel Sinclair and Guy East.

Exclusive Media’s Guy East and Nigel Sinclair will produce and fully finance the film alongside Theron’s production company Denver and Delilah Productions with partners Beth Kono and AJ Dix; Stephane Marsil’s Hugo Productions and Mandalay Vision’s Matthew Rhodes. Tobin Armbrust and Alex Brunner of Exclusive Media will executive produce with Peter Safran, and Mandalay’s Cathy Schulman will also produce in some capacity.

Stephane Marsil has developed and produced all of Gilles Paquet-Brenner’s films starting with 2001’s PRETTY THINGS which garnered star Marion Cotillard a César nomination. When Gilles brought Gillian’s book to Stephane, he immediately optioned it and engaged Gilles to develop his first English language American film.

Charlize Theron will play Libby Day, a woman who, at the age of 7, survives the massacre of her family and testifies against her brother as the murderer. Twenty-five years later, a group obsessed with solving notorious crimes confronts her with questions about the horrific event.

Tobin Armbrust, President Worldwide Production and Acquisitions, will oversee the production for Exclusive Media.

Alex Walton, Exclusive Media’s President of International, will introduce DARK PLACES to overseas buyers at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin.

Devoted fans of her book will be delighted to learn that the screen adaptation is coming from such a stellar team of creative filmmakers,” said Nigel Sinclair and Guy East.

“I have been working with Gilles for more than ten years now and am very proud of the films we’ve produced, and especially the recent worldwide success of SARAH’S KEY. Having developed Dark Places for the past few years as Gilles’ first American film, it is truly gratifying to be working with such fantastic partners in Denver & Delilah, Exclusive Media, and Mandalay Vision,” said producer Stephane Marsil of Hugo Productions.

Mandalay’s Matthew Rhodes & Cathy Schulman said “We knew after our first meeting with Stephane and Gilles that DARK PLACES would shape up to be a truly special project. Exclusive is a terrific partner, and we’re thrilled they’ve come on board to support Gilles and our stellar creative team in bringing this gripping story to the big screen.”

Charlize Theron won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role as serial killer Aileen Wuornos in MONSTER in 2003. She received further Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for her performance in NORTH COUNTRY in 2005, and a Golden Globe nomination for her performance in YOUNG ADULT in 2011. Theron was last seen in the summer box office hits SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN and PROMETHEUS. She will be seen next in George Miller’s MAD MAX: FURY ROAD opposite Tom Hardy.

Dark Places was published in 2009 and was listed on the New York Times Best Seller List for more than 25 weeks. The book was also shortlisted for the Crime Writers’ Association Ian Fleming Steel Dagger Award and won the Dark Scribe Magazine Black Quill Award for Dark Genre Novel of the Year. Rest in Peace: Stuart FreebornAnother film legend has passed on, and though his name may not jump out at you, his contributions to the world of special effects will long be remembered and revered. It's with a heavy heart we report that Stuart Freeborn is no longer with us.

The Associated Press is reporting that Freeborn, a pioneering movie makeup artist behind creatures such as Yoda and Chewbacca in the Star Wars films, has died. He was 98. Within the horror genre Stuart served as chief makeup artist on 1976's The Omen, and he also contributed his genius to 2001: A Space Odyssey, See No Evil, the TV horror film Spectre, the Superman film franchise, and even the hilarious Haunted Honeymoon from 1986.

"He brought with him not only decades of experience, but boundless creative energy," said Star Wars' George Lucas. "His artistry and craftsmanship will live on forever in the characters he created. His Star Wars creatures may be reinterpreted in new forms by new generations, but at their heart, they continue to be what Stuart created for the original films."

We here at Dread Central would like to take this time to extend our sincerest of condolences to Stuart's many friends, his family, and his constituents. Godspeed, good sir, and thank you!

Full Moon Unearths Wizard Video Collection of Rare Oversize VHS Boxes; Available with Authentically Duplicated Films Beginning February 12thOh, how fondly we remember those giant VHS boxes horror films came in back in the day. Sure, they were a bitch to fit onto your shelf, but the packaging was so cool.

Horror guru Charles Band and Full Moon Features have discovered Wizard Video's treasure trove of these classic boxes, and you can get yours, with its authentically duplicated film, beginning next week.

The videos become available on February 12th, but you can check out the new Wizard Video website now, and by all means "like"Wizard Video on Facebook.

Take a look below for all the details, including a list of the titles and when they become available. Click the image under the details for a better look at the artwork.

From the Press Release
Horror legend and home video pioneer Charles Band had been putting off his warehouse cleaning for years. But during a recent overhaul of his extensive collection of collectibles, he unwittingly resurrected a veritable treasure of vintage horror limited-edition VHS boxes coveted by horror fans and serious collectors. Starting February 12th, fans will be able to purchase these original boxes with authentically duplicated VHS copies inside – at an incredibly reasonable price.

"Back in the 80’s, I thought it would be cool to release these films in the oversize VHS boxes," explained Band. "In the short term it was very successful, but by 1982 the trend had run its course and the titles were reduced back to regular VHS dimensions." Band started Wizard Video in 1980; it was the first to release horror cult films such as Halloween, Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and I Spit On Your Grave in the early days of home video. "The kids who remember these oversize packages remember them fondly." Band continued. "The release of this collection is for them."

Over a span of three to four years, Wizard Video published 80 titles in the large-format boxes. Thirty-five years after the packaging’s popularity died out, Band and his excavation team uncovered the original big VHS boxes of 36 of these rare titles in mint condition, between 200 to 400 of each title. Each box will be hand-numbered on the spine and autographed by Charles Band and will include an authentically duplicated VHS copy of the film inside of a clamshell holder. Band estimates that very few of these rare videos are still in print, and no more than five to ten thousand units were manufactured at the time.

Also found in the collection were original boxes of the first horror video games on the planet from Wizard Video’s sister company, Wizard Video Games. The Atari 2600 game boxes for Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Halloween will be released in 2013 from Full Moon. At the time of their release, these titles were deemed too violent for children and were either banned or sold by request only, making them an extraordinarily rare find as well.

Every month, beginning February 12th, four titles will be on sale at $50 per title.

Here is the rollout schedule:

About Charles Band and Full Moon Features
Charles Band founded Media Home Entertainment in the late 1970’s, one of the first independent video distribution operations in America. With the foresight that home video was the future, a vision few others shared, he helped pave the way for the colossal home video boom to come. In the 1980’s Band produced such hit cult favorites as Ghoulies, Re-Animator, The Dungeonmaster, Dolls, Troll, Robot Jox, and many more.

Band founded Full Moon Features in 1989 following the early 80’s success with Wizard Video, which released such cult classics as Zombie 2, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and I Spit on Your Grave on VHS. Wizard Video was celebrated for its shocking and incomparable box art, especially after switching to the "big box" format. Band soon teamed with Paramount Pictures and Pioneer Home Entertainment for direct-to-video releases on VHS and Laserdisc. With upwards of 20 releases per year, Band has also built a reputation as a prolific and frequent director of entertaining low-budget genre films. In all Band has produced almost 300 features variously delving into the realms of horror, sci-fi, fantasy, and family films under its Moonbeam Films label.

Being Human Series 5 Will Be the Show's Final Season

BBC Three announced today that the current Series 5 of "Being Human" will be the show's last, and channel bosses say the show will reach an "apocalyptic" ending with the three leads taking on the devil. We have a trailer for the final episodes right here.

During its five-year run the show has picked up a series of prizes, including three Writer's Guilds Awards and one TV Choice Award in 2011. Executive Producer Rob Pursey said working on the show has been a truly great experience. "From the first one-hour pilot, all the way through to this climactic series, we've been given real creative freedom and encouragement. It's a credit to BBC Three that such an unusual idea has been allowed to flourish and evolve in its own unique way."

None of the show's original cast members - Aiden Turner (vampire Mitchell), Russell Tovey (werewolf George), or Lenora Crichlow (ghost Annie) - made it through to the current series. Instead it will be up to vampire Hal (Damien Molony), werewolf Tom (Michael Socha), and ghost Alex (Kate Bracken) to deal with the return of Mr. Rook, the shady figure whose government department protects the human world from otherworldly beings.

Take Three Trips Down Damnation Street at Once

0
0

We're getting three dark tales for the price of one from Fox Hill Productions, which has optioned development and production rights to Andrew Klavan’s mystery trilogy Dynamite Road, Shotgun Alley, and Damnation Street.

From the Press Release
Fox Hill Productions has optioned the development and production rights to Andrew Klavan’s acclaimed trilogy of mystery novels: “Dynamite Road,” “Shotgun Alley” and “Damnation Street.” The trilogy has been adapted into one feature screenplay, titled DAMNATION STREET, by the books’ acclaimed writer. The film will be produced by Samantha Lusk, Andrew Hyatt and Seth David Mitchell of Fox Hill Productions (The Frozen, The Last Light).

"We're thrilled to be working with one of the masters of mystery,” says Lusk. “In DAMNATION STREET, Klavan has crafted a story that not only presents a unique, gritty and hyper-real world, but also pays homage to the classic elements of the genre. This script does for noir what Unforgiven did for westerns."

DAMNATION STREET is an edgy, neo-noir thriller centered on a cat and mouse game between a skilled private detective and a famed serial killer who are both in pursuit of a woman who is the fantasy of every man.

A two-time recipient of the Mystery Writers of America’s Edgar Award, Klavan is an American writer best known for authoring the novels “True Crimes” and “Don’t Say a Word,” both of which have been turned into motion pictures. Warner Brothers’ True Crimes starred Clint Eastwood and James Woods. Don’t Say a Word, which featured Michael Douglas, Sean Bean and Brittany Murphy, was released by Twentieth Century Fox.

The deal was negotiated by Elsa Ramos on behalf of Fox Hill Productions and Linda Lichter on behalf of Klavan. Gersh Agency’s Frank Wuliger and Greg Pedicin are representing the project.
