Production Begins on The Boxtrolls from Laika and Focus Features

It's a little on the fringy side of the fence, but considering how great ParaNorman and Coraline were, we figured you'd want to know about the upcoming third project from Laika and Focus Features: The Boxtrolls, which has begun production and will be released in October, 2014.

From the Press Release:
Marking their third project together, LAIKA and Focus Features, the two companies behind the current Academy Award-nominated animated feature ParaNorman, announced that LAIKA has begun production on The Boxtrolls. The new movie will be released nationwide by Focus on October 17th, 2014. Focus CEO James Schamus and LAIKA President & CEO Travis Knight made the announcement today.

As on the previous animation collaborations ParaNorman and Coraline, Focus will hold worldwide distribution rights to The Boxtrolls, and Universal Pictures International will release the movie overseas (with eOne Distribution handling Canada). Coraline (2009) earned Golden Globe, BAFTA, Critics’ Choice, and Academy Award nominations for Best Animated Feature Film and was named one of the year’s 10 Best Films by the American Film Institute (AFI). In addition to its Academy Award nomination, ParaNorman (2012) is in the running for the BAFTA Awards’ animated feature prize. ParaNorman has won two Annie Awards (the animation community’s Oscars equivalent) and been cited as best animated feature film by 14 critics’ groups, more than any other 2012 animated feature.

The Boxtrolls is a 3D stop-motion and CG hybrid animated feature based on Alan Snow’s bestselling fantasy adventure novel Here Be Monsters. The Boxtrolls is being directed by Anthony Stacchi (co-director of the hit animated feature Open Season) and Graham Annable (story artist on Coraline and ParaNorman) and produced by David Ichioka and Mr. Knight. The voice cast includes Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley, Academy Award nominee Toni Collette, Elle Fanning (marking her fourth movie with Focus), Isaac Hempstead-Wright ("Game of Thrones"), Emmy Award nominee Jared Harris ("Mad Men"), Simon Pegg (Star Trek), Nick Frost (of Focus’ upcoming The World’s End), Richard Ayoade ("The IT Crowd"), and Tracy Morgan ("30 Rock").

The Boxtrolls is a comedic fable that unfolds in Cheesebridge, a posh Victorian-era town obsessed with wealth, class, and the stinkiest of fine cheeses. Beneath its charming cobblestone streets dwell the Boxtrolls, foul monsters who crawl out of the sewers at night and steal what the townspeople hold most dear: their children and their cheeses. At least, that’s the legend residents have always believed. In truth, the Boxtrolls are an underground cavern-dwelling community of quirky and lovable oddballs who wear recycled cardboard boxes the way turtles wear their shells. The Boxtrolls have raised an orphaned human boy, Eggs (voiced by Mr. Hempstead-Wright), since infancy as one of their dumpster-diving and mechanical junk-collecting own. When the Boxtrolls are targeted by villainous pest exterminator Archibald Snatcher (Mr. Kingsley), who is bent on eradicating them as his ticket to Cheesebridge society, the kindhearted band of tinkerers must turn to their adopted charge and adventurous rich girl Winnie (Ms. Fanning) to bridge two worlds amidst the winds of change – and cheese.

Mr. Knight said, “The Boxtrolls is a visually dazzling mash-up of gripping detective story, absurdist comedy, and steampunk adventure with a surprisingly wholesome heart. It’s Dickens by way of Monty Python. Tony and Graham have crafted a strange and beautiful world replete with fantastical creatures, good-for-nothing reprobates, madcap antics, and rip-roaring feats of derring-do. But at its core, like all LAIKA films, The Boxtrolls is a moving and human story with timelessness and powerful emotional resonance. We’re thrilled to partner with Focus Features and Universal to bring this remarkable story to family audiences around the world.”

Mr. Schamus commented, “Following our successful collaborations on ParaNorman and Coraline, we are delighted to be embarking on a third wondrous adventure with the LAIKA artisans who transform everyday materials into living creatures infused with dimension, humor, and soul. With a wonderfully appealing menagerie of fun characters, and a generous, open heart at its center, The Boxtrolls will be a must-see for family audiences.”

Behold! Over Twelve Minutes of Killer Bus GoodnessIt's Thursday. Friday's still quite a few hours away, and you're looking for something to help you pass your time. We totally hear you. The Internet has become a veritable theme park of time-killing activities, and the following one is a treat for sure!

As per the Pajiba website...

"Are you familiar with the movie and television trope in which someone is unexpectedly hit by a bus or other large vehicle? I’m sure that two or three instances of it immediately come to mind (and they’re assuredly in the video). We see it all the time (and it’s almost always effective), but I had no idea just how often it is employed until the noted video editor behind Harry Hanrahan compiled practically every instance ever of the trope into this supercut. It’s one of those brilliant video edits that blows up the trope, exposes it for the narrative manipulation that it is, and renders it null. You will never be able to see it again without thinking of this video and how overused the trope has become."

Here is a complete list of the movies and television shows in the video.

Obscure Gets Announced With Action-Packed New Video

    0

Focus Home Entertainment has revealed that Obscure will be coming to PC, PSN, and Xbox Live drenched in blood and chaos this spring. Grab a friend and battle against hordes of monsters as you try to complete your objectives in one piece!

    From the Press Release
Obscure is unveiled today for the very first time, through a punchy video full of action, monsters, and hemoglobin! Obscure for PC, PSN and Xbox LIVE is a pure, action-rich 2.5D side-scroller, drenched in the blood and caustic humor inspired by the teen and horror movie genres... a spirit that definitely shows through today's video!

Playable alone and in cooperative mode (local & online), Obscure lets you play as one of four unlikely heroes; students, each with unique skills and abilities that develop throughout the adventure. Geared toward action and all-out brawling, Obscure's combat emphasizes combos, follow-up attacks, and score-multipliers! Survive against packs of monsters trying to skin you alive, discover new weapons, and complete objectives throughout a variety of huge, non-linear levels. Overshooting the scores will earn you experience points to level your character up, unlocking new weapons, skills, and other devastating abilities! At any time, you can even get back to some of earlier levels to try your new toys and beat your scores!

Obscure rises to an entirely different scale in multiplayer. In cooperative mode, up to four players (local and online) team up to survive. Split up to fill your objectives as fast as possible, or stay together in a cohesive team to increase your chances of survival!

Video game veterans will certainly recognize the license, Obscure; the survival-horror game from Hydravision that terrorized over a million players in the middle of the last decade. Comprised of some of the original developers, Mighty Rocket Studio has been hard at work on this project for over a year.

Despite the completely different style of gameplay, Mighty Rocket Studio's new game embraces its origins and incorporates many familiar elements of the survival-horror genre; sparse ammunition, limited supplies of health kits, and the oppressive feeling of constant danger in a universe where gruesome creatures may suddenly appear out of nowhere! Obscure fans will feel right at home, and will even get to visit the famous Leafmore High School and meet some of the previous characters from the series.

Obscure will release on PC, PSN and Xbox LIVE in spring 2013!

Screw Chocolate! This Valentine's Day Give Your Lover an Undead Ted!

Screw Chocolate! This Valentine's Day Give Your Lover an Undead Ted!With Valentine's Day rapidly approaching, why not get your lover the gift that keeps on giving... and eating and rotting and munching and shambling and biting and stinking? Kind of gives new meaning to the term "brain candy," no?

Forty-five-year-old British creator and artist Phillip Blackman has unleashed his line of Undead Teds on the UK. These creepy little critters are described as horrifically cute teddy bears hand zombified into quirky gifts for the zombie lover in your life. Each one is a unique, disturbing vision of fluffy gore.

I mean, really, who could possibly resist these things? I want each and every one of them like yesterday!

"Each Undead Ted takes in excess of eight hours to make, not including the time it takes for glue, paint, and varnish to dry, and I price them individually depending on size, complexity, materials used, and time taken," said Blackman of the zombification process in a recent interview with Daily Mail. "They've all been great fun to make, but of all the ones I've made so far, my favourites are the Valentine ones, holding their torn-out hearts aloft as a grisly gift to their lovers. Horrible."

Meet the Characters in BBC America's Orphan Black

    0

Meet the Characters in BBC America's Orphan BlackBBC America's new original series "Orphan Black" premieres on March 30th, and we have character descriptions and photos to share along with a new trailer and the official synopsis of the show's first episode.

    From the Press Release:
Sarah hopes that cleaning out a dead woman’s bank account will solve all her problems. Instead, they multiply at an unnerving rate. Smart, sexy, and pulsating with suspense – BBC AMERICA’s new original series "ORPHAN BLACK" features rising star Tatiana Maslany (The Vow, Picture Day). She portrays Sarah, an outsider and orphan whose life changes dramatically after witnessing the suicide of a woman, “Beth,” who looks just like her. Sarah takes her identity, her boyfriend, and her money. But instead of solving her problems, the street-smart chameleon is thrust headlong into a kaleidoscopic mystery. She makes the dizzying discovery that she and the dead woman are clones... but are they the only ones? Sarah quickly finds herself caught in the middle of a deadly conspiracy, racing to find answers. "ORPHAN BLACK" premieres Saturday, March 30, 9:00pm ET/PT, as part of BBC AMERICA’s Supernatural Saturday.

Led by Tatiana Maslany, the cast includes Jordan Gavaris ("Degrassi") as Felix, Sarah’s thorny foster brother and her one true confidante; Dylan Bruce ("NCIS") as Paul, Beth’s boyfriend – a decent guy with chiseled features, but more complicated than he appears; Maria Doyle Kennedy ("Downton Abbey") as Mrs. S, Sarah’s hard-nosed working class foster mother from across the pond; Michael Mando ("The Killing") as Vic, Sarah’s volatile ex, aptly nicknamed “Vic the Dick”; Kevin Hanchard ("Republic of Doyle") as Art, a veteran detective working alongside Beth who grows suspicious of her erratic behavior: and Skyler Wexler (Carrie) as Sarah’s seven-year-old daughter. The ten-part conspiracy thriller, produced by Temple Street Productions, is co-created by Graeme Manson ("Flashpoint") and John Fawcett ("Spartacus"), with Manson also serving as writer and Fawcett as director.

“As we get deeper into the show and peel back the layers, we unearth the conspiracy and the philosophy behind those responsible for the circumstances our characters are facing,” said Graeme Manson. “It’s a thrill ride with no shortage of hooks; the ‘how is she going to get out of this?’ question will be answered by Sarah invariably not getting ‘out’ but going deeper,” added John Fawcett.

Sarah’s complexities, struggles, and troubled past make for a character that both grounds and fuels this intense series. As the story unfolds, we learn that Sarah began life in an English orphanage, bouncing between foster homes, eventually landing on the doorstep of Mrs. S, who adopted her and Felix, later uprooting them (under somewhat suspicious circumstances) to North America. Sarah steadfastly remains the English punk – a street-smart stray with a reckless streak and a loyal heart. She’s made bad choices in life but has always done right by her daughter, Kira, even if that meant the pain of separation. She wants more than anything to reunite with Kira and turn over a new leaf. But Sarah’s simple score to buy a new life turns into a tightrope act when she finds out that not only was Beth (her deceased look-alike) a cop, she was caught in the middle of a deadly conspiracy. Now Sarah is the next target – fighting to stay alive, while desperately trying to escape from the complex web she’s found herself in. But as more pieces of the puzzle emerge, Sarah is only drawn in deeper. With continual shocks to her identity, she’s left reeling, wondering who she really is.

“Sarah’s unlike any character I've seen on television, male or female. She is written so vividly on the page, struggling to survive as best she can in a world that's never made room for her,” said Tatiana Maslany, star of "Orphan Black."“The series is completely unpredictable, gripping, dark, and hilarious. The writers take huge risks, and that's what excites me so much about
'Orphan Black.' It pushes boundaries, always with intelligence.”

Meet the Characters in BBC America's Orphan Black

SARAH (Tatiana Maslany) is a natural chameleon, a born outsider living on the fringes and surviving by her wits. She began life in an English orphanage and was bounced between foster homes until she landed on the doorstep of Mrs. S, who finally adopted her and her foster brother Felix. When Sarah was 14, Mrs. S uprooted them under suspicious circumstances and moved them to North America. Sarah steadfastly remained the English punk, a street-smart stray with a reckless streak and a loyal heart. She’s made bad choices in life, but she’s always done right by her daughter Kira, even if that meant the pain of separation. Now, all Sarah wants is to reunite with Kira and turn over a new leaf… but her encounter with Beth changes everything.

BETH (also Tatiana Maslany) is Sarah's entry point into the mystery. She is revealed backwards from the moment of her death, as Sarah takes on her identity and reconstructs her last days. By literally becoming Beth, part of Sarah's journey lies in understanding her, and she comes to deeply respect the valiant, damaged cop she so rashly switched places with.

Meet the Characters in BBC America's Orphan Black

FELIX (Jordan Gavaris) is Sarah's thorny foster brother and the one true confidante she can be honest and open with. He’s a struggling artist, worldly beyond his 23 years. Like Sarah, Felix is a stray cat and hustler, keeping more than one sugar daddy to fund his artistic ambitions. He is caustic and dramatic, constantly complicating things for Sarah. But they’re the closest thing either of them has to family, and when the chips are down, they’re fiercely loyal to one another.

PAUL (Dylan Bruce) is Beth's boyfriend – a decent guy with chiseled features who Sarah falls into bed with against her better judgment. Before taking on Beth’s identity, Sarah had never been involved with a supportive and solid man like Paul. Despite the fact that she is deceiving him, she takes solace in Paul. But Paul is more complicated than he appears.

Meet the Characters in BBC America's Orphan Black

MRS. S (Maria Doyle Kennedy) is Sarah’s hard-nosed working class foster mother from across the pond. She’s given up a lot to raise Sarah, who, until now, has never shown an ounce of respect or appreciation for her sacrifices. Their relationship is estranged and deeply strained over Mrs. S’ care of Kira, Sarah’s daughter. But Mrs. S is tough for a reason. While at first she seems like an obstacle, she has much to reveal about Sarah’s origins.

ART (Kevin Hanchard) is a veteran detective who works alongside Beth. Out of loyalty, he helped clear Beth of a civilian shooting. Now, with Sarah posing as Beth, Art grows suspicious of her uncharacteristic and erratic behavior. One thing becomes clear; he is not a man who likes a mystery to go unsolved.

VIC (Michael Mando) just can’t help himself. He’s Sarah's ex, a volatile ball of male insecurity and exactly the kind of bad energy Sarah is trying to rid her life of. “Vic the Dick” (as he is aptly nicknamed) is lovelorn, betrayed, and sporadically violent – a bad mix. But no matter what he learns about Sarah, he keeps coming back for more, screwing things up for her in the process.

    "Orphan Black" Episode 1.01 Synopsis:
Sarah, an orphan outsider on the run from a lifetime of bad decisions, witnesses the suicide of a stranger who looks just like her. Sarah assumes her identity, hoping that cleaning out the dead woman’s bank account will solve all of her problems. Instead, the street-smart chameleon is thrust headlong into a kaleidoscopic mystery. After taking on the new identity, Sarah quickly finds herself caught in the middle of a deadly conspiracy and must race to find answers.

Directed by James Plumb (Silent Night, Bloody Night: The Homecoming), this post-apocalyptic sci-fi/horror film is a whole new take on the original classic Night of the Living Dead.

Night of the Living Dead: Resurrection is set in 2012, when the deceased have risen from their graves once again with the instinct to feed on the living. As academics speculate on the scientific cause of this phenomenon, theologians point to the Armageddon foretold in the Book of Revelation. As the cities are taken over and civilization crumbles, a family takes refuge from the undead army in an isolated farmhouse in West Wales. But the greatest threat is already among them as they fight to stay alive.

Lionsgate Unleashing Curandero: Dawn of the Demon and Night of the Living Dead: Resurrection on DVD

And Fango got the early word that Curandero: Dawn of the Demon will be headed to DVD (with Ultraviolet digital copy) and video-on-demand March 12. Written by Robert Rodriguez, who also served as an executive producer with Elizabeth Avellan, the film was directed by Eduardo Rodriguez (no relation and currently set to helm Sony Pictures’ direct-to-video FRIGHT NIGHT 2) and stars El Mariachi’s Carlos Gallardo in the title role. He’s a Mexican faith healer who is called upon to purify a police station and winds up in conflict with a ruthless killer named Casteneda (Gabriel Pingarron). Originally completed way back in 2005 and screened at Screamfest that year, the film was orphaned when Miramax founders Harvey and Bob Weinstein split from then-parent company Disney. The DVD will present Curandero in 16x9-enhanced 1.78:1 widescreen, with English and Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1 audio; no special features are announced. Retail price is $26.98.

Poster and Trailer for Stephen Hyams' The Boogeyman Adaptation

Another Stephen King adaptation is here, this time from Stephen Hyams for The Boogeyman, which began its life as a short story published in the magazine Cavalier and later appeared in the 1978 collection Night Shift. Check out the film's poster art and trailer.

The Boogeyman is written and directed by Hyams and stars James Cosmo, Miltos Yerolemou, Cyd Casados, Nick Cornwall, and Jack Hollington. It's part of King's Dollar Babies initiative, which makes several of his stories available for film students who want to try their hands at an adaptation. According to the IMDb, it's slated for a 25 February film festival release in the UK.

"The Boogeyman" Short Story Synopsis: (via Wikipedia)
The majority of the story occurs in the office of Dr. Harper, a psychiatrist, where a man named Lester Billings talks to the doctor about the "murders" of his three young children. Billings seems paranoid and possibly schizophrenic as he describes the circumstances of the death of his children. His first two children died mysteriously of apparently unrelated causes (diagnosed as crib death and convulsions, respectively) when left alone in their bedrooms. The only commonalities were that the children cried "Boogeyman!" before being left alone and the closet door was open slightly after finding their corpses, even though Billings was certain the door was shut.

Dinner for Fiends - Pretty Damn Good Horror Podcast

Dinner for Fiends - Pretty Damn Good Horror PodcastAt the outset of this edition of Dinner for Fiends, I joked that I had a feeling this was going to be a pretty damn good horror podcast. You can decide whether or not that’s the case, but let me assure you the recording of this edition was a living nightmare.

Uncle Creepy, Matt Fini, Andrew Kasch, and yours truly (Foywonder) got together to record a Dinner for Fiends without Buz and… Let’s just say we never truly realized how much he was the glue that held this whole thing together from a technical standpoint. However long this episode runs, the recording of it was more than twice that. The editing of this show was not that much different from the stitching of Leatherface’s mask. Skype experienced a cornucopia of technical difficulties constantly messing up our audio, disconnecting us, and, thus, interrupting the recording. Then my laptop began overheating and… Let’s just say you’ll detect increasing levels of exasperation in our voice once you get past the 10-minute mark when the fun began.

The Collection, Texas Chainsaw 3D, Mama, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, and “American Horror Story: Asylum” are our main topics. By the last half hour, after the 4,000th technical difficulty, we just start shooting the breeze about whatever loosely related topic we felt like as we awaited yet another meltdown.

    Our pain is your pleasure.

Universal Picks Up New Supernatural Project Pitch

    0
    0

Universal Picks Up New Supernatural Project PitchRelax, kids, the Winchesters are not heading to the big screen (although that would be kind of cool as long as it doesn't have any Sam flashbacks about having coffee or petting dogs). We're talking about a new as of yet untitled project that Universal has locked up the rights to.

According to THR, the studio has picked up an untitled young-adult book series proposal from fantasy author Julie Kagawa with Chris Morgan attached to produce. The supernatural story is set in a present-day coastal town where mythical creatures hide amongst us cloaked as humans. Slayers belonging to an order that dates back to St. George infiltrate the town disguised as out-of-town kids, setting up a confrontation and, as is the case with most YA books, a love triangle.

There always has to be a friggin' love triangle. More on this one soon.

Do No Harm Does No Good; NBC Cancels Series after Two Episodes

    0
    0

Well, we can't say we didn't see this coming, although we do feel bad for series star Steven Pasquale: After posting the lowest-rated scripted premiere in the history of the Big Four networks, "Do No Harm" has been taken off NBC's schedule after just two episodes.

Per THR, "Do No Harm" opened on January 31st to just a 0.9 rating with adults 18-49 and 3.1 million viewers before dipping even lower last night (February 7th) to a 0.7 demo rating. It now stands as the swiftest cancelation to come during the 2012-13 TV season.

NBC will replace previously scheduled episodes of "Do No Harm" on February 14th and February 21st with encore broadcasts of long-running procedural "Law & Order: SVU."

    RIP!

    Synopsis:
In “Do No Harm,” Dr. Jason Cole (Steven Pasquale, "Rescue Me") is a highly respected neurosurgeon who has it all – a lucrative career, confident charm, the gift of compassion. But he also has a deep, dark secret. One morning when he wakes up disoriented in a wrecked hotel room amidst several near-naked women he's never seen before, he knows one thing: It's happening again. Every night at the same hour, something inside Jason changes, leaving him almost unrecognizable – seductive, devious, borderline sociopathic.

This new man is his dangerous alternate personality who goes by the name of “Ian Price.” For years he's battled Ian, keeping him in check with a powerful experimental sedative. But now his – their – body has developed a resistance to the serum, setting Ian free once again. And to make matters worse, after being suppressed for so long, Ian's hell-bent on taking revenge on his oppressor. With everyone Jason cares about at risk – patients, friends, co-workers and even the woman he loves – he's got to stop Ian once and for all. Will they find some common ground, or will they bring each other down? Hell hath no fury like an alter ego scorned.

Also starring are Alana De La Garza ("Law & Order"), Michael Esper (A Beautiful Mind), Ruta Gedmintas ("The Borgias"), and Phylicia Rashad ("The Cosby Show"). "Do No Harm" is produced by Universal Television and Traugott Company. The executive producer/writer is David Schulner ("Desperate Housewives,""The Event"). Peter Traugott ("Ringer") and Rachel Kaplan ("Ringer") also are executive producers. Michael Mayer (NBC's "Smash") is the co-executive producer and director.
