Pre-Order Christine on Blu-ray this Friday, February 15th; Limited to 3,000 Copies

0

With so many horror classics and cult favorites getting announced for Blu-ray release in 2013, one bit of news that has mostly flown under the radar is Twilight Time's plans to give John Carpenter’s 1983 adaptation of Stephen King’s Christine a Blu-ray upgrade a month from now.

For those of you that actually need a refresher as to what Christine is all about:

Geeky student Arnie Cunningham (Keith Gordon) falls for Christine, a rusty 1958 Plymouth Fury, and becomes obsessed with restoring the classic automobile to her former glory. But as the car changes, so does Arnie, and his newfound confidence turns to arrogance behind the wheel of his exotic beauty. Arnie's girlfriend Leigh (Alexandra Paul) and best friend Dennis (John Stockwell) reach out to him, only to be met by a Fury like no other.

Twilight Time – the company that put the blue back into Blu-ray with its controversial Night of the Living Dead release a short while back – will be bringing Christine to Blu-ray with a special printing limited to only 3,000 copies. That means you might want to pre-order before it sells out, which this particular title may very well do and fast.

The disc will reportedly include all of the extras found on Sony’s previously released special edition DVD: commentary track with John Carpenter and star Keith Gordon, three featurettes, deleted scenes, and the theatrical trailer. Not being a completely bare bones Blu-ray might make the steep $29.95 price tag a bit more palatable for some.

Though the Christine Blu-ray won’t be released until March 12th, pre-ordering for this title begins February 15th at 3PM EST via the Twilight Time page at the Screen Classics website. Again, only 3,000 copies, and who knows if or when Sony will ever give this its own Blu-ray treatment.

Now here's something interesting... THR is reporting that Lionsgate is post-converting Stuart Beattie’s I, Frankenstein for a 3D release on September 13th. You know, because this movie is just screaming for the post-conversion treatment.

We’re selective. We do it where we think it’s appropriate for the creative, as well as for the consumer enjoyment,” said Rob Friedman, co-chairman of Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group during an analyst call regarding their third quarter revenues.

Aaron Eckhart, Yvonne Strahovski, Bill Nighy, and Socratis Otto star in the upcoming film.

I, Frankenstein, written and directed by Stuart Beattie, is based on a graphic novel by Kevin Grevioux, co-creator of the Underworld franchise. Lionsgate will distribute the film in the United States, Lakeshore will handle international sales, and E1/Hopscotch will distribute in Australia.

A new supernatural horror film from Spotlight Pictures, The Appearing, showed up on our radar today; and we have all sorts of goodies to share: a sales trailer, some artwork, and a rather lengthy synopsis. Check it all out!

The Appearing, which is now in post-production, was directed by Daric Gates and stars Dean Cain, Will Wallace, Don Swayze, and Quinton Aaron. Based on true events, it is said to be in the vein of Hollywood blockbusters like The Possession and Fallen.

Synopsis:
City detective Michael (Wallace; The Tree of Life, The New World) relocates to a quaint, small town with his wife, Rachel (Emily Brooks; The Eugenist), following her emotional breakdown after the sudden death of their young daughter. Michael takes a job in the sheriff’s office, thinking not much will happen in such a quiet town. However, on his first day of duty, Michael is asked to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a teenage girl.

Michael teams up with Sheriff Hendricks (Swayze; Heathens and Thieves, The Visitation) to unlock the mystery. As their investigation deepens, they discover the missing girl’s boyfriend is locked up in a mental institution. They meet with his doctor, Dr. Shaw (Cain; “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman,” Out of Time), who explains they may be dealing with a dark supernatural entity, much to Michael’s disbelief.

Meanwhile, Michael isn’t the only one encountering an evil force-- Rachel is being terrorized with constant nightmares and visions of a bloodied girl. Even though the dreams torment her, they end up leading her to the location of the missing teenage girl. But the case is far from being over as the evil entity now possesses Rachel, and Sheriff Hendricks has a dark secret of his own. Michael will have to summon up all his courage and faith to fight the evil forces in The Appearing.

Shadow People Trailer Appears on the Wall

0
0

The official trailer for Anchor Bay's upcoming spooker Shadow People has arrived, and we have it for you hot and fresh (or maybe cold and dead?) right here. Check it out, and look for the flick in March.

From the Press Release
They are known by many names in many cultures. In Persia they are called “Bakhtak.” In Japan they are the “Kanashibari.” In Mexico they’re called the “Subirse el Muerto” and the “Suk Ninmyo” in New Guinea. In America they are known as “Shadow People.” They are very real; yet, no one who has seen them has lived to describe them. Are you willing to believe? Victims report waking from sleep to find themselves paralyzed, a noise buzzing in their head, while a shadowy figure stands watches them, or sometimes even climbs onto their bed. The sightings are widespread around the globe for centuries, but many are afraid to talk about their encounters. According to experts these appearances may be tied to a medical mystery of unexplained nocturnal deaths.

Anchor Bay Films presents the March 19th Blu-ray™ and DVD release of the supernatural thriller Shadow People. Starring Dallas Roberts (“The Walking Dead,” The Grey, “Rubicon”), Alison Eastwood (Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Tightrope), Anne Dudek (“Mad Men,” White Chicks, 10 Items or Less), and Mattie Liptak (Quarantine 2, The Candy Shop), Shadow People promises an unforgettable glimpse into a netherworld perhaps too perilously close to ours! SRP is $24.99 for the Blu-ray™ and $22.98 for the DVD.

Shadow People is based on a true story about small town radio personality Charlie Crowe (Roberts), who unravels a conspiracy about encounters with mysterious beings. These “Shadow People” were the cause of hundreds of unexplained deaths. He encounters CDC Epidemic Intelligence Agent Sophie Lancombe (Eastwood), whose investigations entwine her with Charlie’s own discoveries, leading them both into a dark world and a decades old cover-up.

The film explores the actual historical evidence of SUNDS and the real phenomenon of an inverse placebo effect, where the mind can actually kill the body through false belief. The film is backed up by real archival footage of a suspected outbreak of SUNDS, which occurred in rural Kentucky, and takes the found footage genre to a new level by intercutting the story with the actual interviews of the real-life participants, local news footage, and radio clips from the event.

Exclusive: Filmmaker Douglas Schulze on Mimesis: Night of the Living Dead

0
0

Today Douglas Schulze's latest genre effort, Mimesis (review here), arrives on DVD and Blu-ray courtesy of Anchor Bay. Inspired by George A. Romero's classic Night of the Living Dead, it follows a group of horror fans stuck reliving the terrifying events of the 1968 film... but for real.

In anticipation of the flick's release, Dread Central recently chatted with Schulze about how a real-life incident inspired his unique twist on Romero's original story, his thoughts on walking the fine line of homage and remakes, sequel plans for Mimesis and much more.

Dread Central: Congrats on pulling off a successful homage to one of the greatest movies of all time; I'd say it's pretty evident after watching Mimesis that you're a horror fan, correct?

Douglas Schulze:Absolutely; I came at this story first and foremost as a horror fan. It's a culture I've been a part of for a long time; a lot of my friends are horror fans that kind of exist in the horror convention circuit, and so I've been observing that culture for some time now.

Dread Central: Being someone who has been to quite a few now myself, I find it's a really fascinating culture. I love people watching at cons- especially the fans who dress up.

Douglas Schulze: Me, too; that's sort of where this idea came from - the horror fandom - after I saw a group of fans who really took it too far at one con and were harassing other people while they were 'in character.' What would happen if there were a group of horror fans who took their fandom too far? How far would they go to recreate their favorite movie? And so the idea kind of just evolved from there.

When you look around today at the things that are happening around us and to our society, the idea really isn't all that 'out there' so instead of running away from subject matter that talks about people who try to emulate their favorite rock songs or horror movies, I chose to create a film that addressed the concept straight on. I never wanted to remake Night of the Living Dead or update it in any way; Mimesis was more about the concept of horror fans taking their love of horror to the next level, and it just so happens they want to make their own Romero movie.

Dread Central: When you're working within the world of something as revered as Night of the Living Dead, how tricky was it to walk that line of homage versus remake then? Or did the rules of your story pretty much keep you on track?

Douglas Schulze:You know, it's never an easy task unless you're straight up pulling a Gus Van Sant (laughs). But that was something I was conscientious of the entire time because there are parts of Mimesis that should feel like Night of the Living Dead, but if I went just a little 'too far' with it, it felt like I was ripping off George so I was deliberate with everything in this movie- from the way we shot it to the dialogue to the characters. We knew we were stepping into some big shoes when we decided to go with this property, and we were always conscious that we didn't want this to become a mirror image of Living Dead either- our movie still needed to be able to stand on its own two feet, and I think we succeeded at that.

What's interesting, though, is that our approach to Mimesis was modeled after how Romero approached his original film all those years ago now; we made this independently and without the use of outside funding, too, and so when it came time to make Mimesis, I really utilized his methodology in his approach to filmmaking for this as it seemed really appropriate to make this movie just like he did, independently, over 40 years ago.

Dread Central: I saw on the IMDb that you're already working on Mimesis 2; is there anything you can tell us about that?

Douglas Schulze:Well, we are hoping to make a sequel- absolutely. We already shot something, kind of like a teaser, with Kristy Swanson (the original Buffy) as we're developing a Nosferatu story around her. It's such a classic story, and I know she'd be fantastic, too, so we'll see how it all shapes up. We could be shooting in two months, in four months or in a year- who knows? But I do know we'll be shooting some of it around LA hopefully, too.

Exclusive: Editor George Mann Discusses Encounters of Sherlock Holmes

0
0

Sherlock Holmes is a well-established character known for his detective work of gruesome murder cases. In the new book Encounters of Sherlock Holmes, we find several stories by the book's authors, James Lovegrove, Mark Hodder, and others.

George Mann, the book's editor, recently sat down with us to give us some clues to the mysteries ahead.

AMANDA DYAR:Encounters of Sherlock Holmes features numerous stories from authors James Lovegrove and Mark Hodder, among others. Can you tell us a bit about each story and how they fit together in the Sherlock Holmes universe?

GEORGE MANN:Well, I was aiming for an eclectic mix of stories for the anthology, ranging from the traditional (in the mould of Doyle’s originals) to the fantastical, with a fair bit of variety in between. So on one hand we have stories such as Mags Halliday’s tale of mysterious passengers on the Necropolis Express, James Lovegrove’s case of a bizarrely disappearing person, Mark Hodder’s exploration of events surrounding Richard Burton’s translation of a notorious manuscript, while on the other we have Eric Brown describing Holmes’s investigation into the murder of a Martian ambassador and Nick Kyme giving us Holmes’s encounters with infamous villains such as Frankenstein’s monster and Mr. Hyde. On top of that, both Paul Magrs and David Barnett open our eyes to the true story of Mrs Hudson.

AMANDA: You also wrote one of the stories for the book yourself. What is your story about, and how did you prepare to write a story about one of the greatest literary characters of all time?

GEORGE:Watson takes centre stage in my story, joining forces with the redoubtable Sir Maurice Newbury and his assistant, Miss Veronica Hobbes, to investigate reports of a strange beast that’s been climbing out of the Thames. Of course, Holmes is never far from events...

As far as preparations go – I’m not sure you can really prepare yourself to write for such a great literary character. I think the key is to focus on the story and not worry about the weight of what has gone before. After all, that’s your job – to tell a good story – so that has to come first. After that it’s all about the characters and your responsibility to portray them well. It helps that I’ve been reading Holmes stories for over twenty years, and he’s pretty much embedded in my psyche!

AMANDA: Sherlock Holmes fans are some of the most loyal and particular fans of any series. How does Encounters of Sherlock Holmes cater to the fans and stay loyal to the original works?

GEORGE:Again, the key is to get the character right. Holmes already exists and has done so for over a hundred years. He’s one of the most important literary creations of all time, and people the world over have an expectation of how he should behave, how he goes about investigating a case. If you can get that right, the rest should click into place. I think that’s what people are looking for and how you remain respectful of Doyle’s legacy.

Holmes is a rationalist, and there’s great drama to be had from pitching him into situations where his fundamental beliefs are challenged or otherwise seemingly impossible circumstances. I think the authors of the stories in Encounters do this admirably.

AMANDA: You've written several novels in your career including The Ghost series and have edited several other works as well. How did your previous work help contribute to your work on Encounters of Sherlock Holmes, and do you have any other current or upcoming projects you'd like to talk about?

GEORGE:I think my experience editing the four Solaris anthologies stood me in good stead for Encounters, in terms of how to structure an anthology. It’s a lot like making a good mixtape (or playlist, to use modern speak!). You have to get the balance right, the ebb and flow of the stories. Of course, my love of Holmes and the Victorian era in general helped a great deal, too.

As far as other projects go, there’s a new Newbury & Hobbes novel this year, called The Executioner’s Heart, as well as a related short story collection towards the end of the year. Aside from that, I’m just putting the finishing touches to a new Holmes novel called The Will of the Dead, which has been tremendous fun to write.
