The Official Trailer and Poster Arrive for Makinov's Come Out and Play

With Come Out and Play now available on VOD and heading to limited theatres on March 22nd, we finally have an official trailer and poster to share. Come on in to see them both!

Makinov's remake of Narciso Ibáñez Serrador’s 1976 Spanish horror flick Who Can Kill a Child? stars Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Vinessa Shaw, and Daniel Gimenez Cacho. Read our Come Out and Play review here.

Synopsis
Beth (Vinessa Shaw, 3:10 To Yuma) and Francis (Ebon Moss-Bachrach, “Damages”), a happy young couple expecting their first child, have come to Mexico for a romantic getaway. Francis insists on venturing by boat to a more serene locale; Beth hesitantly agrees. As they dock on a sun-kissed beach where children are playing and giggling, everything seems perfect at first. But as they wander the strangely empty streets, an atmosphere of unease sets in: an abandoned hotel, a distress call that repeatedly echoes from a radio set, the sense of being watched... the sound of children’s laughter drifting through the streets, but no adults in sight. When Francis witnesses the violent death of an old man (Daniel Giménez Cacho, Bad Education) at the hands of a smiling little girl, a day in paradise quickly turns into a struggle for survival. Francis must protect his very pregnant wife from a pack of murderous children and get the couple off the island alive. An unsettling theme drives the starkly simple plot of COME OUT AND PLAY, Belarus-born filmmaker Makinov’s horror production based on Juan José Plan’s 1976 Spanish film, El Juego De Niños.

Exclusive: Director David Guy Levy on Would You Rather and More

$

David Guy Levy's wonderfully twisted thriller Would You Rather (review here) is now in select theaters and available on VOD. With his Clue, Saw and House on Haunted Hill mash-up, Levy has conjured up an unforgettable and often uncomfortable affair.

Dread Central recently chatted with Levy about his indie project and heard more on how he got involved with this sick and twisted (albeit entertaining) game of Would You Rather with screenwriter Steffen Schlachtenhaufen, why Jeffrey Combs would be the best game show host ever, their plans for a potential sequel and much more.

Dread Central: Congrats on making one of the more uncomfortable movies I've had to sit through in a while- which I mean as a compliment of course (laughs).

David Guy Levy:Thanks! That's what we were aiming for so I'm glad to hear the movie worked for you (laughs).

Dread Central: Can you talk about what attracted you to the project and how you got involved?

David Guy Levy:Oh sure; well, Steffen (Schlachtenhaufen) approached me with a very simple pitch- he said, "What if we made a movie about a game of Would You Rather, but in our version, people had to choose whether or not to do awful things to themselves or each other?" So we took that idea and thought about all the movies we loved and figured out how we could tell this story the best way possible on a very small budget but still tell it the way we wanted to.

We wanted to approach the concept very realistically because I think seeing how playing this game affects 'real' people makes it all the more terrifying. We needed real characters and a real story to this, or we would have just ended up making an entirely different kind of horror movie altogether. We didn't want to make anything too gratuitous either- for both Steffen and myself, Would You Rather was all about creating that tension and holding it from beginning to end.

So I had this idea for a dinner party, much like you see in Clue, where there's this really disturbing mystery that's unfolding, all led by this man who is just untouchable. I remember seeing this movie once about a roofer who's doing a job at a mansion and overhears his employer getting a special invitation to an exclusive event. The guy dies so the roofer doesn't think anyone would notice if he stole the invitation so he does; and when he shows up, it's actually this high-stakes tournament of Russian Roulette that you aren't allowed to leave once you arrive so he gets thrown into something far more sinister than he could have imagined. That's the kind of tension we were going for.

Dread Central: Can you talk about bringing on Brittany (Snow) and why she was perfect for the role of Iris?

David Guy Levy:You know, she was one of the very first people that popped into my head when we were developing this story; I had a friend of mine, Adam Scott, reach out to her for us, and she agreed to meet with me for lunch to talk about the project. She really loved the story but was of course concerned like we were about Would You Rather turning into a torture porn movie, but I just convinced her that what we were going for was a far more 'refined' approach and asked her to trust me. Thankfully she did, and she was absolutely wonderful to work with.

Dread Central: And how about Jeffrey Combs- Lambrick just seemed like a role tailor-made for him.

David Guy Levy:When we were creating Lambrick, I sort of had Christoph Waltz's character from Inglourious Basterds in the back of my mind. I wanted him to have that kind of flourish to him since Lambrick is essentially a very twisted version of a game show host; so one day Steffen showed me Jeffrey's reel and I knew immediately that this was the guy. He just had that sensibility to him where I could picture Jeffrey being at the head of this really messed up 'game show'- it's all that charisma. Jeffrey would make a perfect game show host if he wasn't already such a brilliant actor.

So we sent him the script, and one day later he sent back not an acceptance letter but a thank you note, which I thought was really special. And Jeffrey really brought this amazing energy with him to set each and every day, which ended up being somewhat infectious because I could see everyone from the cast to the crew really feeding off of and responding to that, which was just amazing.

There was this really great moment with John Heard's character, a recovering alcoholic, who has to drink a full decanter of brandy. Originally it was supposed to be a bottle of wine, in reference to John's glass of wine he refused to drink, but Jeffrey saw that a bottle of wine wasn't really that much of a threat so he suggested upping the ante and making it a decanter of booze since that will really mess someone up. That was just brilliant, something I hadn't really considered, and so it was little things like that from Jeffrey that really elevated Would You Rather and also encouraged the other actors to find their own little moments to improve upon, which just made the movie that much stronger.

Dread Central: So what's coming up next for you then? Are you planning on working in the horror genre again?

David Guy Levy:People always like to say that they don't like to label themselves- well, I don't like to unlabel myself if that makes any sense so I'd love to come back and do more horror and even do another Would You Rather movie, too. Steffen and I are working on writing a potential sequel now so we'll see where that goes. Right now I'm just focused on getting my new comic book out called "Back to Back to the Future," which is about what would have happened had Eric Stoltz had never been replaced by Michael J. Fox. I originally wrote the story for a class thesis when I was in college and just developed it from there. I knew I could never get it made as a movie so I thought a comic book would be a great treatment for this story.

Synopsis
In the wake of her parent's death, Iris struggles to make ends meet while caring for her terminally ill younger brother. Shepard Lambrick, a seemingly philanthropic aristocrat, expresses an interest in helping them. When he invites her to an exclusive dinner party, she accepts. Also attending the dinner party are seven more desperate individuals. They soon find themselves trapped in Lambrick's mansion and forced to play a sadistic game of Would You Rather, where the winner will be awarded untold amounts of money. As the game progresses, the dilemmas Iris and the other players face grow increasingly deadly.

Dreamworks is getting ready to go to the young adult reading well yet again, and this time they've come up with a writer to adapt the fantasy novel Shadow and Bone from Leigh Bardugo. Read on for the latest.

THR is reporting that the studio is looking to tap Christopher Kyle (K9: The Widowmaker, Alexander) as the man to bring the first part of this intended trilogy to the big screen.

The first installment in this series takes place in a land under attack by a swath of darkness filled with creatures that feast on human flesh. A young woman discovers she has a dormant power that could be a key to turning the tide and is taken to be trained by her country’s magical elite.

The book debuted on the New York Times’ bestseller list, went back to a third printing and had the rare distinction of being an Amazon "book of the month" pick for both the children’s and adult categories. More as it comes.

Comic Company Black Mask Studios Becomes a Reality; Huge Names Involved!

We first told you about Black Mask Studios, a hybrid digital/physical release model that planned on distributing content through multiple pipelines including mass market and direct-to-fan as well as the existing comics market, way back in March of 2012.

Today some big names have come together to make it official.

THR is reporting that Black Mask Studios -- the recently formed transmedia publishing company founded by comic book writer Steve Niles, entrepreneur and transmedia production shingle Halo-8's Matt Pizzolo and Bad Religion guitarist Brett Gurewitz -- has recruited some of comics' biggest guns to help create its first wave of comic book titles.

Among the luminaries participating are Watchmen co-creator Alan Moore, V for Vendetta artist David Lloyd, Pulitzer Prize-winning Maus creator Art Spiegelman, The Walking Dead artist Charlie Adlard, Mike Allred (Madman), Ben Templesmith (30 Days of Night), J.M. DeMatteis (Justice League, Spider-Man), Molly Crabapple (Shell Game) and Wu-Tang Clan's RZA and Ghostface Killah.

The way we put together the slate is with wanting to push the boundaries of what can be done in comics,” said Pizzolo, who notes that Black Mask will operate under the mottos “To create, you must destroy” and “Inspire, never meddle.

One of the chief goals is to expand the audience of comics," he said. "We are trying to do that by bringing in different sensibilities, like Wu-Tang, like hard sci-fi and futurism, and with madcap energy. Remember books like Transmetropolitan? You don’t see much of that today.

Comic Company Black Mask Studios Becomes a Reality; Huge Names Involved!

Part of the slate has an activist and political component, with proceeds going to certain causes. The company wants to bring back activism to the comics field, to create something more meaningful than just having an artist sign a petition. And one of Niles' gripes of today’s comic industry landscape is that he believes a work like Vendetta would not be published due to fear of being too political.

The first book, hitting stores May 1, will be Occupy Comics Anthology, a politically themed, three-issue miniseries whose first issue reunites Moore with Lloyd for the first time since the two created the anarchistic V for Vendetta in the 1980s. A portion of its revenue will go to Occupy-related initiatives.

12 Reasons to Die hails from RZA and Ghostface Killah and, showing off Black Mask’s transmedia leanings, will have a storyline that is told partly in comic form and partly in music form, as it's timed to be released with the new Ghostface Killah album. Described as “a brutal tale of gangsters, betrayal and one vengeful soul hunting the 12 most powerful crime lords in the world,” it'll be drawn by rotating artists (including Bedlam's Riley Rossmo and Hack/Slash's Tim Seeley) and hits shelves May 29.

June 19 will see the release of Liberator, from writer and real-life dog rescuer Matt Miner and artist Joel Gomez (Detective Comics), a vigilante series about two young heroes who avenge the torture of animals. Thirty percent of the book’s profits from the four-issue miniseries will go animal-rescue efforts.

Finally, Transmetropolitan and The Boys co-creator Darick Robertson and indie filmmaker Adam Egypt Mortimer will release Ballistic -- a psychedelic and bizarre buddy adventure about an air conditioner repairman with master-criminal dreams and his best friend, a drug-addicted, genetically modified, foul-mouthed firearm -- on June 26.

Even though Niles has Hollywood experience -- his comic 30 Days of Night was turned into a Sam Raimi-produced studio picture, while Pizzolo has lots of indie film cred with Halo 8 -- they say they are in not the business of hoarding IP or parsing it out while stiffing creators, which has happened in the past.

We are not looking at these things as treatments for movies, but we do want to engage in transmedia-world building,” said Pizzolo.

The company is convinced that there is an audience beyond the loyal core of superhero readers that dominates the marketplace, and Pizzolo points to such books as The Walking Dead and Niles’ 30 Days franchise, which have had sales numbers rivaling the comics of Marvel and DC.

Comics has a long history of doing all sorts of genres,” he said, "and we want to expand into new territories and into genres that haven’t gotten the attention we think they deserve."

This is how it always starts, man. Meteors hit the Earth. Aliens emerge. We are brought to the brink of destruction and look to Will Smith to save us all. In any event, Russia has been getting pounded by space rocks, and we're inevitably doomed. Watch the video!

Reuters reports that a powerful blast rocked the Russian region of the Urals early on Friday with bright objects, identified as possible meteorites, falling from the sky, emergency officials said.

"It was definitely not a plane," an emergency official told Reuters, without elaborating. "We are gathering the bits of information and have no data on the casualties so far."

No one was hurt in the meteor shower, an emergency official told RIA-Novosti. Local residents said they witnessed burning objects in the sky of the Chelyabinsk and Sverdlovsk regions. The sounds of car alarms and breaking windows could be heard in the area, the witness said, and mobile phones were working intermittently.

It has begun!

Todd Farmer Talks My Bloody Valentine 2, Halloween 3D, The Monkey's Paw, and More!

Todd Farmer Talks My Bloody Valentine 2, Halloween 3D, The Monkey's Paw, and More! Now that Valentine’s Day has passed, this writer must ask: How many of you horror fans celebrated by watching My Bloody Valentine 3D, the wickedly fun 2009 remake of the 80s slasher classic?

Given the nature of that film’s ending, have you ever wondered why a sequel has never materialized? To ring in this V-Day right, Dread caught up with MBV3D co-writer Todd Farmer to discuss the sequel-that-never-was.

Dread Central: My Bloody Valentine 3D opened over four years ago in early 2009, reportedly made on a budget of $15 million dollars. It went on to gross over $50 million domestically and over $100 million worldwide. That success, coupled with the sequel-friendly nature of the film’s conclusion, leads me to ask – where’s the sequel?!

Todd Farmer: I wish I knew! Patrick and I had a wonderful take. We pitched it a couple of weeks before MBV3D came out and everyone was excited. We were gonna bring the whole gang back, cast and crew. But... you know. It came down to ARRRGGGGGG. I don't know. We heard lots of reasons. We heard there were rights issues; then we heard there were internal conflicts... it went on and on, and in the end none of it really matters because a great many cosmic cogs just tumble and turn in just the right direction for a movie to get made... but it only takes one "no".

Dread Central: MBV3D director Patrick Lussier had previously spoken to Dread Central, mentioning Lionsgate’s somewhat vague reasoning for abandoning the sequel. Was there ever a concrete explanation eventually given to either of you as to why the studio wasn’t willing to move forward with this potentially lucrative franchise?

Todd Farmer: In the end we heard Joe Drake, the studio head at the time, didn't feel comfortable with genre films and wanted to move the company in another direction. Now is that concrete? Who knows?

Dread Central: The original My Bloody Valentine had a rather open-ended finale as well. When you first began writing the remake, did you always see your conclusion as being somewhat of an homage to the original’s ending, or were you intending to leave the door open for another installment? Can you discuss what direction MBV2 might have gone in?

Todd Farmer: If memory serves, when we started the shoot, we had a final end to the thing but changed as we went on. Patrick came up with the idea of keeping the myth alive. You'd have to ask him his reasons, but if I had to guess, I think he loved the cast and loved telling this story. It felt like a great world and wonderful characters to revisit.

And no spoilers. Hollywood is too fickle. Who knows, one day we might come back. Of course, IF we had recently spoken with anyone about the slim possibilities of relaunching the franchise... well, I obviously wouldn't be able to tell you.

Dread Central: Given that Lionsgate still seems to be in the horror business, what with their recent success with Texas Chainsaw 3D, do you feel as though there might still be a chance that audiences could see the continuing adventures of Harry Warden/Tom Hanniger? Would you and Patrick Lussier consider reteaming for the sequel if the opportunity arose?

Todd Farmer: Yes and yes. Again, we had fun with the first one. Patrick and I weren't writing partners at the time, although we more or less were. This is the movie that made us official. So yeah, we've discussed it over the years, and it's hard not to love the little miner than could.

Dread Central: Speaking of sequels, could you give us an update on Halloween 3D?

Todd Farmer: You'd have to ask team Weinstein about H3D. I haven't heard anything in well over a year. Still marvel that we wrote a script in eight days AND that it was pretty good. I'm shocked the thing hasn't leaked online after all this time, but I suppose that's because there were only a handful who saw it.

Dread Central: Can you tell us what became of the Dark Castle remake of I Saw What You Did, which Mr. Lussier had discussed in the previously mentioned interview?

Todd Farmer: I Saw What You Did. Wow, what a fun one. Three Days of the Condor in High School. Least that's what Patrick came up with and brought me in on it. What a lovely script that was. We pitched it a four or five times, were sent off to write it, and then when we did, we were told we did exactly what we'd pitched and Rona wished he'd told use before we started that he really wanted a masked killer or a ghost. Oh. Okay.

Dread Central:Are you at liberty to discuss any of your upcoming projects? IMDb lists two upcoming features that you’ve written – Heavenly Sword and The Monkey’s Paw.

Heavenly Sword was based on the video game and is all but done. A week or two from finished. I've not seen it yet. My buddy Tom Jane does a voice so it should be fun. I'm doing the Gold Coast Film Festival in April - that's Down Under - and we plan on screening it there so I'll get to see it then.

Monkey's Paw is the darkest script I've written. It's with RKO Pictures and has a stunning new director attached, but we're waiting on him to finish The Crow. I guess I should make some calls and see if that's still the case.

Dread Central: You’ve recently had a comic book released by DC Comics, titled Insurgent, which is currently on its second issue. Can you discuss its origins a bit? Considering how cinematic the book seems at times, did it initially begin life as a potential film? Might there be an Insurgent movie at some point in the future?

FJ [DeSanto, co-writer] and I started talking Insurgent a dozen years ago. We called it Sleepers back then, named after sleeper agents. It did start as a movie concept. A big, high dollar action thing. Although I love horror, action was always a great love of mine so when the opportunity arose to do something outside my normal box, I jumped at it. We started at Wildstorm and somehow survived several company shifts and earthquakes to land at DC. Sort of amazing. And all due to FJ's dogmatic, never give up, never surrender attitude. And yes. There has been some feature interest. We'll see what happens. As we both know, it only takes one "no."

Dread Central: One parting question: As a writer who has worked consistently in the genre, can you tell your fans – why horror?

Why horror? Funny. I have my normal answer which is... when I started, only New Line and Dimension really embraced horror. Everyone else looked down their noses at it. But horror was the way to get in. The budgets were low, and there wasn't big A-list competition like there is now. And that IS why. But something funny happened along the way. Not only was I pretty okay at horror, I loved writing it. Because horror is in everything we do. There is no good without bad, no light without darkness. Horror is funny and sad and thrilling. I write horror because... it's my home now.

A very special thanks to Mr. Farmer for taking the time to speak with us. You can check out My Bloody Valentine on both DVD and Blu-ray, while the first two issues of Insurgent can be found at your local comic book shop.

The final official trailer for The Host has made its way online, and damn if it isn't completely reminiscent of a much - and we mean much - tamer version of the classic flick Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Check it out!

Open Road Films is releasing The Host, based on Stephenie Meyer's novel, on March 29, 2013, in the US. Look for it in the UK on the same day from Entertainment Film Distributors. It was directed by Andrew Niccol, who also wrote the screenplay. It stars Saoirse Ronan, Diane Kruger, William Hurt, Jake Abel, Max Irons, Boyd Holbrook, and Frances Fisher.

Related Story:Meet Melanie Stryder and Jared Howe in Two New Featurettes for The Host

    Synopsis:
The Host is a riveting story about the survival of love and the human spirit in a time of war. Our world has been invaded by an unseen enemy. Humans become hosts for these invaders, their minds taken over while their bodies remain intact. Most of humanity has succumbed.

When Melanie (Ronan), one of the few remaining "wild" humans, is captured, she is certain it is her end. Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, was warned about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the glut of senses, the too-vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

When outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off on a dangerous and uncertain search for the man they both love.

A boatload of casting news and an early still have arrived for DefTone Pictures Studios' upcoming horror-comedy A Grim Becoming. Check out the details, which include some names that will be very familiar to horror fans.

    From the Press Release:
DefTone Pictures Studios, Inc., continues to put Buffalo, New York, on the map with its film productions. Currently in pre-production is the company's next feature film, a horror-comedy entitled A Grim Becoming, directed by Adam R. Steigert (Ombis 2013) and written by Janeen Avery, Christopher Brechtel, Mark Mendola, and Steigert.

Newcomer Christopher Marriott (B.Y.O.D.) is in talks with DefTone to play the lead role of Raphael. Raphael is a young, bitter executive who is on the verge of losing a multimillion dollar architectural deal with a large distribution company lead by the awkward Stanford brothers. Raphael suffers a sudden death in his family and has to immediately leave to go to the funeral in his home town of Metzburgh. Seeing this as his big chance to get ahead is Wayne, a jealous co-worker who is in competition with Raphael. Wayne is being played by Syfy's "Ghost Hunters" and The Black Dahlia Haunting’s (2012) Britt Griffith.

As Raphael returns to Metzburgh, he experiences a life changing event: witnessing a Grim Reaper taking a soul. This sighting results in Raphael becoming a Reaper and having to explore his own conscience and the lengths he will go to get his own life back. But Death, played by Michael Sciabarrasi (Ombis, Black Guy on a Rampage: Homicidal Vengeance), has other plans for the naive young executive.

Casting News and First Still from Adam Steigert's A Grim Becoming

A Grim Becoming also reunites scream queens Devanny Pinn (Jamie) and Jessica Cameron (Life) with DefTone teaming up with Melantha Blackthorne for the first time. Melantha will play Meryl, sister to lead character Raphael. Film icons Lynn Lowry (Mother), Valerie Lynn Hanna (Charlie Stanford), and Bill Oberst, Jr. (Phil), will have supporting roles in the film.

DefTone Pictures Studios is once again embracing the great talent of Western New York and will seek many local actors and actresses to complete the cast of A Grim Becoming. Already Patrick Mallette (Father), Melyssa Jade (Carrie), Mike Sarcinelli (Lance), Christopher Brechtel (Mick), and Aryn Fitzgerald (October) have all signed on to the cast. Not to mention that there will be plenty of roles as extras to be had as well.

With a June 21, 2014, release date for A Grim Becoming set by DefTone Pictures Studios and principal photography starting in June 2013, the full cast list will be released in May of 2013. Ombis special effects artists Phill Beith and Jill Jovic have once again signed on to do the effects work for the production, and indie cinematographer Matthew Nardone will be the director of photography.

But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes--a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)--who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past.
