Doctor Gash's Top 10 Greatest Horror Movies... EVER! #8 - A Nightmare on Elm Street

Assuming I haven't been run out of town on a rail by you Dreadies after the first two films on this list, I'll carry on with the next entry. It's completely coincidental that two of the first three films on this list are directed by Wes Craven; the dude just made some badass films.

And perhaps none more badass than A Nightmare on Elm Street.

#8-A Nightmare on Elm Street
"Whatever you do, don't fall asleep."

Before he introduced the world to the horrors of Elm Street, Wes Craven had already established himself as a masterful horror writer/director with the releases of such films as The Last House on the Left in 1972, The Hills Have Eyes in ’77 and Swamp Thing in ’82, but it wasn’t until November 9, 1984, when Craven unleashed a horribly burned, supernatural child-killer named Freddy Krueger on the world in A Nightmare on Elm Street, that he became iconic. Krueger was an instant hit, and Craven became a horror legend.

Doctor Gash's Top 10 Greatest Horror Movies... EVER! #8 - A Nightmare on Elm Street

On an original budget of $1.8 million, A Nightmare on Elm Street would go on to create a horror empire. After the original there were several sequels, "Freddy’s Nightmares" television series, an eventual crossover with Friday the 13th’s Jason Voorhees, tons of merchandise and a 2010 remake. But it all paled in comparison to the strength of the original, which single-handedly fueled all that was to come later.

The feel of A Nightmare on Elm Street is one of absolutely helplessness. Nancy and the teens of Springwood can avoid Krueger simply by not sleeping. But how long can you stay awake? And eventually they are unable to fight sleep any longer and succumb to Freddy, falling into nightmares horrifically constructed by Krueger himself. Once again, you have a great horror film based around the fact that the victims are absolutely trapped by the antagonist. Trapped victims are certainly part of the equation that totals up to great horror.

The premise for the story came to Craven upon reading a series of articles in the Los Angeles Times about three Southeast Asian men who died in their sleep. They were refugees who fled to American from Vietnam and had been experiencing horrific nightmares. Each of the men died in his sleep during one of these episodes. Craven saw the three separate stories of the men on three separate occasions and crafted the idea of a killer who attacked while the victims were asleep. As for Freddy Krueger, that was an easy one. As a young man, Craven had been bullied at school by a child named, guess what, Fred Krueger. (Incidentally, the leader of the gang of rapists/murderers from The Last House on the Left played by the late David Hess was named Krug. Think this bully got to Craven a little bit?)

And although Wes Craven created A Nightmare on Elm Street, Robert Englund was the man who actually stepped into the Freddy Krueger character and brought it to life. In fact, Englund is one of only two men to play a horror character eight consecutive times. (Doug Bradley as Pinhead in the Hellraiser series is the other.) Englund became Krueger; even when not in makeup, one could not help but think of the charred, malevolent Freddy Krueger when looking at the always jovial Robert Englund.

But Englund would not be the only film icon to emerge from A Nightmare on Elm Street. Jackie Earle Haley (who would later go on to play Krueger in the 2010 remake) came to the auditions for the original film. A friend accompanied him. That friend was Johnny Depp, who landed the role of Glen Lantz in Nightmare and would go on to be one of the most successful screen actors of our time. Not a bad recovery from being sucked through your bed to a particularly splattery death.

A Nightmare on Elm Street is often lumped in with its counterpart, Friday the 13th, but Nightmare is on a different level. Sure, Jason Voorhees is an iconic character in his own right, but Friday the 13th had a tendency to get repetitive. Nightmare, even the sequels, was nothing if not creative. Maybe you didn’t agree with some of the antics of the later films, like Freddy being the giant puppeteer for instance, or the roach motel death, but they were always unique. And come on, they were pretty cool. But regardless of your opinion of the later films, there was nothing hokey about the original.

Simply put, what writer/director Wes Craven created with A Nightmare on Elm Street was nothing short of genius. Moviegoers could feel the incredible tension... and the original film was damn scary. Remember the scene in the alley with the giant long arms or the creepy Freddy girl in the school hallway? Everyone is familiar with how difficult it is to struggle to stay awake, and knowing Freddy Krueger was waiting for each victim to nod off made for great entertainment.

Yes, it must be said that the series made some unfortunate choices with Krueger’s personality and quality control of the films, but this does not take away from the fact that the original was so impressive that moviegoers would continue to attend A Nightmare on Elm Street sequels (and a horrid remake) even after a string of disappointments, hoping the filmmakers would be able to recapture the essence of the original. They never did manage to equal the initial offering, but it was a tough act to follow. In fact, it was almost impossible to top, which is why A Nightmare on Elm Street earned its spot among the Top 10 Greatest Horror Movies... Ever!

2013 Saturn Award Nominees AnnouncedThis Sunday is Oscar day, but for genre fans it's The Saturn Awards that really matter, and we have the full list of this year's nominees. Although we have to say the horror pickings are rather slim indeed!

From the Press Release:
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey received more Saturn Award nominations than any other film released last year, with Life of Pi and Skyfall close behind as the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films today revealed the nominations for the 39th Annual Saturn Awards.

Marvel’s The Avengers, The Dark Knight Returns, Looper, Cloud Atlas, Argo and Les Miserables are among the films that have received multiple Saturn Award nominations, underscoring the ways in which genre filmmaking has expanded beyond its roots as niche entertainment.

The only major awards dedicated to honoring the finest in genre entertainment in film, television and home entertainment, The Saturn Awards will be presented in June, with the exact
date and location to be announced shortly.

“From the grand adventure of Les Miserables to the visionary fantasy of Life of Pi and the magical realism of Beasts of the Southern Wild, this year’s films transcended the notion of genre filmmaking and brought us extraordinary visions of exaggerated or enhanced reality, making this one of the most intriguing lists of Saturn Awards nominees in a long time,” said Academy President Robert Holguin.

On TV, oft-nominated "Fringe,""Dexter" and "The Walking Dead" were among the leading TV nominees, joined by the first season of "Revolution," which received four nominations including Best Network Television Series. From British imports "Doctor Who" and "Merlin" to the Canadian "Continuum" and the American remake of the Danish series "The Killing," The Saturn Awards TV nominees took on a global perspective.

This year, the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films introduced a new category to nominate independent films, with seven nominees in the category. “We’ve long admired and respected independent filmmakers and their focused visions, which expand ideas and creativity in the genre field,” Holguin said.

The nominees include films, TV programs and home entertainment titles released between February 1, 2012, and February 11, 2013. Among film studios, Warner Bros. received a leading total of 23 nominations, while Sony Pictures and Universal Pictures each received 14 nominations for their ambitious film slates released last year.

The non-profit Academy of Science Fiction, Horror & Fantasy Films was founded in 1972 by noted film historian Dr. Donald A. Reed, who wanted to honor and recognize genre entertainment often overlooked by mainstream awards organizations.

Here is a complete list of the 39th annual Saturn Award nominations. You can find more information about the Academy at the official Saturn Awards website. Keep up-to-date with Saturn Awards details by following The Saturn Awards on Facebook.

Universal's Mama did pretty damned well at the box office so you know what that means, right, kids? Yep! Sequel talk! So the question beckons: How do you bring the twisted specter back for more? Read on for the early details.

According to Screen Daily Mama grossed $89.2m [$68.2m from the US] with 43 territory openings still to come, including the UK, Germany, France, Australia, Russia, Brazil, Japan, and Italy. Today Universal Pictures’ president of international distribution, David Kosse, admits the prospects of a sequel are good.

We think there’s potential for a Mama franchise,” he explained. “We’d like to do another one. But those conversations are in the early stages. Mama is the first of this type of model that we’ve had enormous success with so there are more opportunities for this kind of film.”

Synopsis
Five years ago, sisters Victoria and Lilly vanished from their suburban neighborhood without a trace. Since then, their Uncle Lucas (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and his girlfriend, Annabel (Jessica Chastain), have been madly searching for them. But when, incredibly, the kids are found alive in a decrepit cabin, the couple wonders if the girls are the only guests they have welcomed into their home.

As Annabel tries to introduce the children to a normal life, she grows convinced of an evil presence in their house. Are the sisters experiencing traumatic stress, or is a ghost coming to visit them? How did the broken girls survive those years all alone? As she answers these disturbing questions, the new mother will find that the whispers she hears at bedtime are coming from the lips of a deadly presence.

Exclusive: J.K. Simmons Talks Conspiracy Theorists and More for Dark Skies

Exclusive: J.K. Simmons Talks Conspiracy Theorists and More for Dark SkiesThis Friday Scott Stewart's creepy thriller Dark Skies lands in theaters everywhere, and to get you conspiracy theorists out there ready, Dread Central recently caught up with veteran character actor J. K. Simmons, who portrays Edwin Pollard, an expert on mysterious forces.

During our chat with Simmons ("Oz," the original Spider-Man trilogy), we heard about what attracted him to the project as well as more on grounding his approach to a character that's often regarded in horror movies as the 'crackpot conspiracy theorist' and what the versatile actor looks for to keep things interesting for him as a performer.

Check out the highlights from our exclusive interview with Simmons below, and look for Dark Skies in theaters this weekend!

Dread Central: What was it about this character in Dark Skies that appealed to you? You don't get a whole lot of screen time, but it's certainly enough to make quite an impact.

J.K. Simmons:It was just that; the character is only on the screen for a very brief amount of time, but he leaves such an impact because of how he relates to this poor family who comes to him for help. Edwin was complex and odd and was really the guy who was there to give Keri (Russell) and Josh (Hamilton) the nuts and bolts of how to deal with their situation because it was something he has been living with for some time.

What I also liked about the project was that at the heart of this story, Dark Skies is a family drama; you see this young family struggling with a lot of the same stuff everyone out there is suffering with - losing their homes, barely making ends meet - so I think it was the balance of that stuff and the otherworldly stuff going on in the story that I really enjoyed.

Dread Central: Usually when we encounter a character like Edwin in a horror or sci-fi movie, he ends up being the crazy conspiracy guy that no one ever really takes seriously, but there was something different about this role- maybe it was your approach or maybe it was the story. But I enjoyed that he wasn't just a caricature all the same.

J.K. Simmons:You know, a few things helped; the way Scott (Stewart) structured the script was hugely important to making this character relatable and realistic because we meet him so far into the story, you can't help believe him after you've seen the things that this family has been through. You don't dismiss his theories because they're more than that. Edwin also had this sense of resignation to him- he gave up fighting these forces long ago so he just lives in his tiny apartment with all his cats and does his best to live with it. He's not a guy who has a solution- only answers.

Dread Central: Considering you've worked in pretty much every genre in both television and in film for almost 20 years now, what keeps you interested as an actor when you're looking at new projects?

J.K. Simmons:Something that I have always done is just always be looking for something different. After I did "Oz," which was my first real breakout role, I was getting offered tons of offers to play Nazi character because of my work as Schillinger; I didn't want to be that guy for the rest of my career though so I turned all those down and just kept looking for different things, and eventually they came my way.

The other thing that I'm always looking for is good writing and a good character that I feel like I can connect to in some way. That's why I enjoyed this character so much; you think you know just who he is going to be when you meet him, and it's not that way at all. Scott does a great job of taking all those expectations you go into when you're watching a movie like Dark Skies and then completely throws you off by twisting them in really clever ways. You don't get that often enough in horror movies.

Josh Hamilton, Keri Russell, and Dakota Goyo also star. The film, directed by Scott Stewart, is more modest-budget scare fare from Insidious and Paranormal Activity producers Blumhouse Productions and Alliance Films.

It's been awhile since last we spoke about the upcoming animated flick Beasts of Burden, but there's been some movement, and now finally the upcoming Dark Horse adaptation has scored a director. Read on for details.

Deadline is reporting that Oscar-nominated Shane Acker (9) will direct Reel FX's currently untitled CG animation based on the Dark Horse Comics series by Evan Dorkin and Jill Thompson. Darren Lemke (Turbo, Shrek Forever After) is adapting the Beasts Of Burden project, which is about a team of fearless four-legged “Watch Dogs” who investigate paranormal activities in the neighborhood of Burden Hill and defend their humans from the supernatural.

Novel Synopsis:
Welcome to Burden Hill - a picturesque little town adorned with white picket fences and green, green grass, home to a unique team of paranormal investigators. Beneath this shiny exterior, Burden Hill harbors dark and sinister secrets, and it's up to a heroic gang of dogs - and one cat - to protect the town from the evil forces at work. These are the Beasts of Burden Hill: Pugs, Ace, Jack, Whitey, Red, and the Orphan, whose early experiences with the paranormal (including a haunted doghouse, a witches' coven, and a pack of canine zombies) have led them to become members of the Wise Dog Society, official animal agents sworn to protect their town from evil.

This turns out to be no easy task, as they soon encounter demonic cannibal frogs, tortured spirits, a secret rat society, and a bizarre and deadly resurrection in the Burden Hill cemetery - events which lead to fear and heartbreak as our four-legged heroes discover that the evil within Burden Hill is growing and on the move. Can our heroes overcome these supernatural menaces? Can evil be bested by a paranormal team that doesn't have hands? And even more importantly, will Pugs ever shut the hell up?

“Jill and Evan have created a unique group of heroes working hard to keep their world safe; they just happen to be dogs... and a cat,” said Dark Horse president Mike Richardson. “This has been one of my favorite titles since it first appeared, and we are eager to bring it to the big screen.

Look for more soon!

We've seen plenty of trailers, TV spots, and even a featurette for Sam Raimi's Oz: The Great and Powerful, and now finally we have the first clip from the film, which opens in theaters in Disney Digital 3D, RealD 3D, and IMAX 3D on March 8!

The film follows Oscar Diggs (James Franco), who pulls one flim-flam too many and finds himself hurled into the fantastical Land of Oz. Franco's co-stars include Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams, and Zach Braff. The script, based on L. Frank Baum's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, was written by Mitchell Kapner and David Lindsay-Abaire.

Synopsis:
When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he's hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is, until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz), and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone's been expecting. It Looks Like The Host Will Be Another Trilogy from Stephenie Meyer

$

With The Host set to be released in theatres on March 29th, of course thoughts are turning to whether or not we have a potential franchise here, and in a recent interview author Stephenie Meyer shed a bit more light on things.

Meyer told The AP that she is already working on a sequel to the 2008 novel she began writing as an escape from the editing of Eclipse, the third book in her Twilight vampire saga. And now that it, too, is reaching the big screen, she has more books in mind.

"Once you've created characters that have life to them, unless you kill them all, you know where their stories go. You're always aware of what happens next,"Meyer said. "I've got outlines for the next books. I would hope that this would be a three-book arc, but we'll see."

The Host trades the vampires and werewolves of Meyer's previous works for space invaders, and while it will inevitably draw comparisons to the book and film series that made Meyer a phenomenon, she hopes the story stands alone and appeals to a broader audience than just "Twi-hards." For one thing, she calls it her "guy friendly" work because it explores bonds and loyalties beyond simple romantic love. "When you're a teenager, love feels like life and death, but this is actual life and death, which is kind of more fun,"Meyer explained.

"Not to mention all the explosions and gunfire,"added Jake Abel, who plays Ian O'Shea, one of the human rebels in the story.

What The Host does have in common with The Twilight Saga is a love triangle, though one complicated further by two distinct entities sharing one body. "Jake and Max [Irons] call it the 'love box',"Meyer told the AP. And though she's attracted to complicated relationships, that conflict probably won't surface in the sequel she's writing. "I feel like the 'love box,' as it is, is played out in this novel. It completely resolves into two happy places so that won't be a focus going forward,"Meyer said.

Open Road Films is releasing The Host, based on Stephenie Meyer's novel, on March 29, 2013, in the US. Look for it in the UK on the same day from Entertainment Film Distributors. It was directed by Andrew Niccol, who also wrote the screenplay. It stars Saoirse Ronan, Diane Kruger, William Hurt, Jake Abel, Max Irons, Boyd Holbrook, and Frances Fisher.

Synopsis:
The Host is a riveting story about the survival of love and the human spirit in a time of war. Our world has been invaded by an unseen enemy. Humans become hosts for these invaders, their minds taken over while their bodies remain intact. Most of humanity has succumbed.

When Melanie (Ronan), one of the few remaining "wild" humans, is captured, she is certain it is her end. Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, was warned about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the glut of senses, the too-vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

When outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off on a dangerous and uncertain search for the man they both love.

The only lead is a dilapidated RV that had earlier been parked on their street. Heading the investigation, Detective Loki (Gyllenhaal) arrests its driver, Alex Jones (Paul Dano), but a lack of evidence forces the only suspect’s release. Knowing his child’s life is at stake, the frantic Dover decides he has no choice but to take matters into his own hands. The desperate father will do whatever it takes to find the girls, but in doing so, he may lose himself, begging the question: When do you cross the line between seeking justice and becoming a vigilante?

Executive producers are J.R. Young, Nathan Kahane, Joseph Drake, and Peter Schlessel.
