It's no secret that we here at Dread Central love "The Dead Files" on Travel Channel. With the show set to return on March 8th, the network has released a promo video featuring some of the series' most terrifying and unforgettable moments along with a sneak peek of the Season Four premiere. Check it out!

Synopsis:
From the Jersey Shore to Death Valley, the Appalachians to the Great Lakes, Travel Channel’s captivating series “The Dead Files” returns for a new season of unforgettable paranormal investigations. The extraordinary duo – retired homicide detective Steve DiSchiavi and medium Amy Allan – team up once again to investigate claims of frightening, unexplained activity in haunted locations across America to help quell fears and restore peace to their clients. Season Four, with thirteen hour-long episodes, premieres Friday, March 8, at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT and features some of the most terrifying, disturbing and high-stakes cases yet.

In each episode, Allan and DiSchiavi travel to a different U.S. town, where they explore each case separately. As a no-nonsense detective, Steve DiSchiavi investigates the facts behind every situation, meeting with witnesses and local experts to piece together the real story. Medium Amy Allan channels the dead to understand what spirit activity lies within the haunted building at hand. In order to preserve the integrity of their discoveries, each investigator’s methods and findings are kept hidden from the other until the very end. Only then do they finally come together to reveal the results to the homeowners – ultimately formulating into one shocking and undeniable conclusion.

Season Four begins in Egg Harbor City, NJ, where one couple’s home has turned from a cozy fixer-upper into a living hell. Despite making renovations, “dark feelings” intensified and manifested into unexplained voices, shadow figures and an overwhelming sense of being watched – frightening both the couple and their five-year-old son. As the team attempts to help the family, DiSchiavi discovers the house was previously the site of a suicide and next to a former sanatorium that saw its share of death. When Allan makes contact with the spirits, she discovers something far more dark and frightening.

Additional locations this season include a house in Browns Summit, NC, where haunted activity is adversely affecting one family’s health; a childhood home in Wabash, IN, that has taken on paranormal activity since it was rebuilt after a mysterious fire; the former home to a murderous mobster in Rock Island, IL, that’s ridden with unexplained shadows and noises; a Watervleit, MI, home overcome with aggressive activity that terrorizes its inhabitants; a 19th century mansion in Buchanan, VA, with dark secrets; and two haunted hotels – the Occidental Hotel in Buffalo, WY, and The Amargosa Hotel & Opera House in Death Valley, CA, both of which are rapidly losing business due to terrified guests.

“The Dead Files” is produced by Painless Entertainment, Inc., for Travel Channel. For Painless the executive producer is Jim Casey, and the co-executive producers are Ross Kaiman and Rob Rosen. The executive producer for Travel Channel is David E. Gerber.

We’re doing something a little different this time. Usually the song featured in B-Sides is from a B-movie. This weekend’s B-Sides is a song made from B-movies - clips from 50 different B-movies comprising the “Grindhouse Megamix”.

Full Moon Features teamed up with YouTube producer Mike Diva and Dat Beat to create an original song composed entirely of soundbites from 50 different grindhouse movies from their collection. The result is proof that with proper autotuning, even baby-killing Nazis can dubstep their way into our musical hearts.

Can you identify all the films that have been assembled to bring the “Grindhouse Megamix” to life? If so, your b-movie knowledge is bar none.

Entity Officially Haunting New Home

Some quick distribution news has come our way for the latest chiller out of the UK, the Steve Stone spooker Entity, and it could not have found a better home to begin its haunting. Read on for details.

From the Press Release
Darclight Films has snatched up the international rights for ENTITY and successfully secured a US deal with Brainstorm Media and Fangoria. The film made its world premiere to enthusiastic audiences at the Bram Stoker International Film Festival and played to equally dynamic fans at the Celluoid Screams Film Festival.

The new horror thriller stars Charlotte Riley (WORLD WITHOUT END, THE TOWN, WUTHERING HEIGHTS) who is also working alongside Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt and Bill Paxton in action sci-fi ALL YOU NEED IS KILL scheduled for release in early 2014. Cast also includes;Dervia Kirwan (Ondine), Branko Tomovic (Bourne Ultimatum, Interview with a Hitman).

“We’re honored to be working with Brainstorm Media and Fangoria again,” said Clay Epstein, VP of Sales and Acquisitions for Arclight Films. “We are thrilled that they’ve embraced ENTITY within their esteemed brand. Audiences trust them to deliver high quality genre-driven films and we certainly agree that ENTITY is a film that will undoubtedly resonate within their fan base.”

ENTITY is a horror thriller that slides back and forth through time in order to connect the dots to a terrifying mystery. The story begins in a remote forest where 34 unidentified bodies were found in shallow graves and despite subsequent police investigations, no official explanation for their deaths was ever offered.

The case was consequently closed.

A decade later, the crew of Darkest Secrets, a reality TV show dedicated to uncovering the truth behind unsolved crimes, embarks upon a location shoot in the same remote forest. Assisting with the expedition is Ruth Peacock (Dervla Kirwan) a psychic whom the crew hope can shed some light on the mystery, but when thegroup stumbles across a derelict industrial site, they begin to discover the reality behind the mystery and its terrifying aftermath.

“This is not a found-footage film. This is something else,” said director Steve Stone. "We are indeed proud that we have been able to deliver a film that looks and sounds as good as ENTITY does. We are also very proud of the fact that ENTITY was able to attract such a fantastic cast. But, above all things the single element of a great story was given the highest priority by all on this film - a story that will engage, chill and surprise an audience throughout its entire length. The film now has signed UK and International deals and we look forward to sharing those distribution plans as they evolve.”

“We’re looking forward to bringing this innovative film to audiences throughout the US,” said Steve Break of Naedomi, who closed the deal on behalf of Brainstorm. “We have something very special with ENTITY and can always count on Arclight Films for quality product that translates when it comes to both happy audiences and achieving (and often exceeding) our bottom line goals.”

Doctor Gash's Top 10 Greatest Horror Movies... EVER! #4 - The Silence of the Lambs

$
0
0

As we get down to the number four entry on the list we find one of the few horror films that the critics enjoyed as much as the fans. It's not often that true horrorphiles and starchy movie critics look at a film and both nod their heads and say, "Yeah, that's the stuff."

But with The Silence of the Lambs, that was exactly the case.

#4-The Silence of the Lambs
"I do wish we could chat longer, but…I'm having an old friend for dinner. Bye."

That was the perfect ending line for the most critically-acclaimed horror film of all time. The film's list of accolades includes five Academy Awards (Best Picture, Best Actor (which Anthony Hopkins won, despite being on the screen for only about 16 minutes of the two-hour film), Jodie Foster took Best Actress, Jonathan Demme was Best Director and the film also won Best Adapted Screenplay. Wow).

Doctor Gash's Top 10 Greatest Horror Movies... EVER! #4 - The Silence of the Lambs

Many consider The Silence of the Lambs to be more of a thriller than a true horror film, but don't make that mistake. Anytime you reflect back on this film and consider that maybe it isn't a pure horror movie, go back and watch it again…go through the whole experience from the beginning and you'll certainly be reminded of the power of the film and the brutality of the characters. Do you recall how Hannibal Lecter escaped police custody? I believe it involved removing a guard's face in the most rudimentary of ways. This, my dear Dreaddies, is a horror film.

The Silence of the Lambs, especially the scenes with Lecter, is a master class in suspense. Before her initial meeting with him, Agent Clarice Starling is repeatedly warned about the danger Lecter poses. And it is through these descriptive images of his crimes (especially those warnings of Dr. Frederick Chilton, describing how Lecter attacked a nurse and ate her tongue) that we are introduced to the monster that is Hannibal The Cannibal. And this is how the brilliant aura of Lecter is built. We hear all about his heinous crimes and see the fear he instills in those that have regular interactions with him. Even before we see Dr. Lecter in that cell at the end of the hall, he's already crept into our psyche.

Hopkins is absolutely hypnotic in this, perhaps his most memorable role. You simply cannot look away while he is on the screen, even while re-watching the film. His portrayal of Lecter is brilliant. Every line is delivered perfectly, whether it be his probing of Agent Starling, his verbal assault of Senator Ruth Martin or his farewell to Sergeant Pembry, Lecter is played perfectly. It is hard to believe, as mentioned above, that Hopkins could create such an iconic character while being on the screen for just a shade over 15 minutes.

Doctor Gash's Top 10 Greatest Horror Movies... EVER! #4 - The Silence of the Lambs

Opposite him, Foster offers an excellent light to Lecter's dark, allowing him to dig into her mind in exchange for his assistance in the "Buffalo Bill" murder case. Anthony Heald is also great as the smarmy doctor overseeing Lecter in prison. However, often overshadowed by the power of Hopkins' performance and his chemistry with Foster is the other monster in The Silence of the Lambs, Jame Gumb a.k.a. Buffalo Bill, played disturbingly by Ted Levine.

Yes, Lecter did utter the infamous line, "I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti.", which would go on to be the most memorable slogan from the film, but we mustn't forget that Jame Gumb had some memorable moments of his own. If it wasn't for the fact that he was up against one of the greatest antagonistic performances of all time in Hannibal Lecter, we can be pretty sure that The Silence of the Lambs would have been remembered for either 1) "It puts the lotion in the basket." 2) Gumb’s crazy final scene and death image, crumpled on the floor like a dead spider, coughing up blood, with the night-vision goggles on; or (and this is the most likely) 3) Buffalo Bill's wild dance scene. Yeah, you know the one. Hidden penis, and the hard close-up on his extraordinarily creepy lipsticked mouth saying "Would you fuck me? I'd fuck me. I'd fuck me hard." in a voice that was very similar to former WWE wrestler Chyna or Ray Lewis.

The suspense never lets up. A great twist scene on the apprehension of Buffalo Bill wraps up an amazing adventure and Lecter's exclamation point in the final scene as he fades into anonymity is perfect. Off he goes to hide in plain sight. Not the scariest, not the goriest, but this may be the most perfectly polished horror movie of all time. It is a masterpiece.

The Walking Dead: Recap of Episode 3.11 - I Ain't a Judas

The Walking Dead: Recap of Episode 3.11 - I Ain't a JudasWhen the last episode ended, we were in the middle of a wild fire fight with the loss of a character and the relative safety of the prison shattered. This new episode dealt with the aftermath. The episode, entitled "I Ain't a Judas," was directed by Greg Nicotero.

SPOILER ALERT: Do not read any further if you haven’t watched the episode yet. This is a recap with specific details from this episode. Continue only if you have already watched it.

The group at the prison discussed their options with Merle locked in a jail cell, rightly so, when we returned to our favorite band of survivors. Merle warned that the Governor has the firepower and resources to outgun and outlast them, in his colorful way, and got under Maggie's skin. Finally tired of Rick's hallucinations, Hershel delivered an ultimatum for Rick to clear his head and lead them. While checking the inner perimeter of the prison that is overrun by walkers, Rick spotted an observer out in the woods. In a quiet moment with Carl there, Carl, on his sensible trajectory this season, suggested that Rick should abdicate his leadership to rest. Will Rick listen? Title sequence commenced.

In the Governor's office, he quizzed Milton on the number of able-bodied Woodbury residents who could take up arms before Andrea burst in, berating the Governor for the prison attack. Andrea asked for a car to visit the prison but was refused by the Governor. "If you go to that prison, stay there!" he quipped as Andrea stormed out. Outside, when Andrea intervened with henchman Martinez trying to arm Woodbury residents, she got chewed out.

Back at the prison, the group was discussing Merle's presence there and what they should do with him. Hershel suggested that Merle's military experience and his loyalty to Daryl might be useful. Hershel visited Merle, and they bonded over lost limbs and Bible verses. Merle volunteered a potential plan of attack by the Governor.

At Woodbury, the Governor began to amass his army from the town's residents. Andrea learned that the gates were sealed and asked Milton for help to leave Woodbury for the prison. She wanted to stop this war that is brewing between the two camps. While the Governor was inspecting his dead eye in the mirror, Milton brought news of Andrea's impending escape, and the Governor told Milton to help. Sounds sneaky, doesn't it?

In the woods, Andrea and Milton caught a wandering walker and hacked off its limbs and teeth, Michonne pets style. As other walkers approached them, Tyreese and Sasha appeared and helped dispatch of them.

While Michonne was working out, Merle came up to her to "clear the air," indicating their previous encounters were just business, before walking off. This must be as close to an apology as Merle can muster. Would Michonne accept it? A Michonne and Merle team-up would be slaughter-rific; wouldn't we want to see that?

The Walking Dead Recap of Episode 3.11 - I Ain't a Judas - Rick and group greets Andrea

Andrea and Milton explained their pets strategy to the newcomers, and when Tyreese and his group learned about Woodbury, they wanted to join. Milton offered to take them to town, and Andrea went on her walk through the woods. Approaching the prison with her walker pet, she was spotted by Carl and Maggie. The group came out fully armed and gave Andrea a welcoming pat down.

After a quick catch-up, with shout outs to Shane (!), Lori and T-Dog, Andrea tried to negotiate a truce. Hershel, ever the astute one, asked if the Governor even wanted one. Andrea tried to explain that the Governor has a town of people gearing up for war, but Rick and the group held their ground.

Andrea and Michonne finally talked about their separation. Andrea learned that the Governor had sent Merle to kill Michonne right after she left.

The Governor greeted Tyreese and his group with hospitality and learned about their run-in with Rick. The group even offered to join Woodbury's army. Pleased with himself, the Governor recognized an opportunity to learn from this group what they knew about the prison layout.

Carol introduced Andrea to baby ass-kicker and caught her up on how their comrades fell, including Shane's betrayal that led to Rick's killing him. Maybe Andrea would evaluate her choices in men. On top of that, Carol even advised Andrea, Lady MacBeth-style, to end the war by killing the Governor in bed. Andrea looked stunned at Carol's evolution from battered spouse to warrior.

Sparing a working car, Rick let Andrea drive back to Woodbury.

Andrea briefed the Governor and rekindled their passion. Will she ever learn?

In the dark prison night, Beth started to serenade the group. Did "The Walking Dead" just turned into "Glee"? Rick, Hershel and Daryl discussed strategy. Rick would take Michonne on a weapons run, while Daryl would be responsible for Merle. Outside, Carl kept watch in the night as a Tom Waits song came on to lead us back to Woodbury, where Andrea and the Governor laying post-coital in bed. She got up, picked up a knife and crept back to the sleeping Governor. Pausing a moment, she couldn't do it.

Did Andrea just choose her side? Did "The Walking Dead" just morph into a CW show by ending with a song?

Synopsis:
A reimagining of the classic horror tale about Carrie White (Chloë Grace Moretz), a shy girl outcast by her peers and sheltered by her deeply religious mother (Julianne Moore), who unleashes telekinetic terror on her small town after being pushed too far at her senior prom.

The quiet suburb of Chamberlain, Maine, is home to the deeply religious and conservative Margaret White (Moore) and her daughter, Carrie (Moretz). Carrie is a sweet but meek outcast whom Margaret has sheltered from society. Gym teacher Miss Desjardin (Judy Greer) tries in vain to protect Carrie from local mean girls led by the popular and haughty Chris Hargenson (Portia Doubleday, Youth in Revolt), but only Chris’ best friend, Sue Snell (Gabriella Wilde, The Three Musketeers), regrets their actions. In an effort to make amends, Sue asks her boyfriend, high school heartthrob Tommy Ross (newcomer Ansel Elgort), to take Carrie to prom. Pushed to the limit by her peers at the dance, Carrie unleashes telekinetic havoc. Brian De Palma’s 1976 film version of CARRIE earned Oscar nominations for stars Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie.

MGM and Screen Gems’ CARRIE is directed by Kim Peirce and produced by Kevin Misher (Public Enemies). J. Miles Dale (The Vow) serves as executive producer, and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Big Love) wrote the script from King’s original story. CARRIE’s creative team includes Director of Photography Steve Yedlin (Looper), Production Designer Carol Spier (Eastern Promises), Costume Designer Luis Sequeira (The Thing), and Editor Lee Percy (Boys Don’t Cry).

Exclusive: Eli Roth on The Last Exorcism Part II, The Green Inferno and More

It's not much of an exaggeration to call Eli Roth the busiest man in horror these days- while currently in post-production on his cannibal flick The Green Inferno in Chile, he's also kept busy promoting and wrapping up a few other upcoming projects including The Last Exorcism Part II.

Dread Central recently hopped on the phone with Roth to talk about what fans can expect from this latest chapter in the tragic and terrifying life of Nell Sweetzer (Ashley Bell), who's back once again to battle demonic forces, but this time for co-writer and director Ed Gass-Donnelly, who has taken over the directorial helm for The Last Exorcism Part II. We also spoke with Roth about his thoughts on reteaming with Bell for another chapter and heard more on the lengths the actress was willing to go for her (literally) back-breaking role this time around. Roth also discussed bringing on Gass-Donnelly for The Last Exorcism Part II and briefly chatted about his latest directorial effort, The Green Inferno, as well.

Check out the highlights from our exclusive interview with Roth below, and look for The Last Exorcism Part II in theaters everywhere this Friday, March 1st.

Dread Central: Thanks so much for taking time to chat today- it doesn't seem like you get a whole lot of free time these days.

Eli Roth:(Laughs) No, not really. I'm actually talking to you from Chile while editing The Green Inferno. There's always going to be work, but I'm glad to take some time to talk about Last Exorcism.

Dread Central: Wow- let's talk about The Last Exorcism Part II then. Now that we've seen the trailer, it's safe to assume you guys are going for a more traditional narrative here rather than using found footage. Can you talk about what made you decide to switch things up for the sequel?

Eli Roth:Well, after the first one came out, everyone started asking us about a sequel, and we thought we only want to do one if we can really tell a great story again and make it a worthy successor to that first film so we spent a year working on the script just so we could get it right. Then when we were ready to move forward, we decided to go the straight narrative route but set it within this world where the events of the first movie exist as a viral video on the Internet.

Going that route gave us all sorts of possibilities with this story and with the character Nell; she has no memory of what happened to her whatsoever so imagine that everyone else has seen these horrible things happening to you but it's something you've never watched. She has no idea, and that's kind of terrifying in some ways where everyone else knows something except you.

Dread Central: Do you feel like opening the world up like this also opens up the character of Nell? Do we get more of a sense of who she is then as she deals with all of these horrible things that have happened to her?

Eli Roth:Oh absolutely. And that was part of it, too- for the sequel we wanted to give Ashley so much more to do because we knew she could. We saw who she was as part of this sheltered family and just imagine what can happen with this fractured character when she's placed in a halfway house- bad things are bound to happen. So we really wanted to explore what would happen if she was in society and still forced to deal with what was happening to her without having her family there. It's an interesting dynamic, and Ashley really gave 150 percent on this.

Dread Central: Ashley is quickly becoming one of my favorite young actresses- what do you think it is about her as a performer that really nails these physically grueling roles that also have a lot of emotion and depth to them?

Eli Roth:It's hard to sum it up really, but she's just so fearless and willing to push herself on so many levels to get her performance just perfect. She's just so giving as an actress and there's really no one else like Ashley out there working today. She put herself through so much for this movie- physically, mentally and emotionally.

I mean, look what Ashley did for the poster; that sequel poster isn't Photoshopped at all- it's actually Ashley in a backbend, and she ended up posing for so long that she ended up straining a bunch of her vertebrae and had to go into physical therapy after even. But that's Ashley- she will literally bend over backwards for her work. What other actor do you know that would or could do these sorts of things and just be willing to go there? Not many, if any at all.

Dread Central: Talk a bit about Ed (Gass-Donnelly) and what he brought to the table for The Last Exorcism Part II.

Eli Roth:Well, Daniel Stamm, who directed the first movie, got very busy right after the first Last Exorcism came out so we knew when we started on the sequel he wouldn’t be able to come back unfortunately. Daniel was great about it, though- he said he wanted the sequel to be an opportunity for another talented filmmaker who needed their shot (like he got his on the original) so eventually we met Ed and realized he was going to approach this with a lot of style and sophistication but still wanted to terrify audiences, too. There's a lot of this movie that really feels like a Polanski film at times, and that's all due to Ed; he really made a beautiful looking horror movie. We needed a guy like Daniel for the first movie, and for this Part II we needed a guy like Ed to bring in a completely different approach, and so the two movies feel very different but still feel like they're both part of this same world.

Dread Central: How hard is it to create a satisfying follow-up when you have a movie that finds the kind of success that The Last Exorcism did? Is there more pressure on you for a movie like this than, say, something original you're working on?

Eli Roth:In some ways, absolutely. The greatest challenge with a sequel is balancing the expectations that the fans have but also giving them the unexpected without alienating them at all. Even though Part II is its own story, it still has to hit a lot of those notes from the original that you go in expecting so we had to find a way to hit those notes but give them a bit of a twist so that you're still getting something new in the sequel. You don't want to end up making Jaws 2 (laughs) or anything.

Dread Central: Not that you don't already have enough projects on your plate, but have you guys considered a third Last Exorcism at all yet, or do you just want to focus on Part II for now?

Eli Roth:Right now I’m just focusing on making this one as great as possible and getting it out there, and if it’s a hit, we do have a great idea for the third one already set to go but no script. We took our time making a sequel to the first movie - three years in fact - so we'd probably take our time again if we get to make another one in the future.

Dread Central: Since this is my last question, I wanted to ask about The Green Inferno- I know you went down and filmed with real cannibals, which is just insane to me. What can you tell us about the project so far?

Eli Roth:I really think this is going to be a terrifying film. It follows this group of students who just think they're smarter than everyone else who head off into this jungle and of course, bad things happen. Very, very bad things. It was just incredible to go from modern civilization to this untouched place each and every day to shoot. It was hard, too- we drove four hours to set every day to this small village that didn't have running water or electricity. They had no idea what movies were so we showed them Cannibal Holocaust, which they all thought was really funny.

But making Green Inferno was an incredible life experience; we dealt with over 100-degree days, driving for hours on these tiny dirt paths, going up the Amazon and just losing our minds. It was incredible- you can't fake that kind of stuff, and I think it's going to make for a great movie.

Ed Gass-Donnelly directs The Last Exorcism Part II from a screenplay by Gass-Donnelly and Damien Chazelle. Ashley Bell stars. Look for The Last Exorcism Part II in US theaters on March 1st and in the UK on March 15th.

Synopsis
Continuing where the first film left off, Nell Sweetzer (Ashley Bell) is found terrified and alone in rural Louisiana. Back in the relative safety of New Orleans, Nell realizes that she can't remember entire portions of the previous months only that she is the last surviving member of her family. Just as Nell begins the difficult process of starting a new life, the evil force that once possessed her is back with other, unimaginably horrific plans that mean her last exorcism was just the beginning.

Dark Skies Not Exactly Hovering Above the Oscar Weekend Box Office

Dark Skies Not Exactly Hovering Above the Oscar Weekend Box OfficeFact: By the year 2015 all theatrically released horror movies will be billed as being "From the Producers of Paranormal Activity and Insidious." With that being slapped on movies like Dark Skies, it’s hard not to believe its enticement value is rapidly being diminished.

The latest genre film from Scott Stewart, the maker of Legion and Priest (Does he own a “Get out of Director’s Jail Free” card or what?) opened in 6th place with $8.8 million for the weekend, according to Box Office Mojo. The Dimension/Weinstein PG-13 extraterrestrial fright flick could only muster a C+ Cinemascore, ensuring it has a better future in a Redbox than on the big screen.

The box office continues to be anything but beautiful for last week’s flop Beautiful Creatures, down to 10th place with $3.4 million. That puts the witchy tweener romantic thriller two slots below Warm Bodies, which took in $4.7 million in its 4th week. Hollywood’s search for the next Twilight will have to look elsewhere.

Next weekend Jack kills giants in Bryan Singer’s mega-budget fairy tale and The Last Exorcism Part II answers the question as to whether The Last Exorcism was really a movie that needed to be franchised.
