The Ghastly Love of Johnny X Lowest Grossing Movie of 2012Back in February of 2012 we told you about a little indie flick called The Ghastly Love of Johnny X. Nobody heard us. Nobody listened. And now... well now the little flick has gone on to live in infamy!

CBS News is reporting that the Paul Bunnell directed film, starring Will Keenan and De Anna Joy Brooks as well as Creed Bratton ("The Office"), Reggie Bannister (Phantasm), Kate Maberly (The Secret Garden), Paul Williams (Phantom of the Paradise), and the late Kevin McCarthy (Invasion of the Body Snatchers) in his final role, has gone on to become the lowest grossing film of 2012, raking in a whopping $117.00 at the box office! How much you wanna bet it goes on to make bank on home video and midnight screenings because of that?

Synopsis:
THE GHASTLY LOVE OF JOHNNY X is a truly mad concoction – a mesmerizing big screen spectacular! JOHNNY X and his rebellious gang of juvenile delinquents from outer space (called the Ghastly Ones) have been banished to planet Earth until they can pay for their crimes. The Ghastly Ones are in hot pursuit of a mysterious femme fatale named BLISS, who has stolen their most prized possession—a strange suit with magical powers known as the “resurrection suit.” When Johnny X wears this suit, he can control anyone against their will.

To capture Bliss, Johnny must form an unlikely alliance with a shifty show promoter, KING CLAYTON, who desperately needs the resurrection suit for his own selfish scheme—to ensure that the legendary rock star MICKEY O’FLYNN successfully completes a comeback concert. Johnny's plight is further complicated when the unpredictable rocker suddenly drops dead, forcing him to use the suit for a far darker purpose—to bring the late, great Mickey O’Flynn back from the grave for a spectacular concert of the macabre!

With highly stylized musical numbers, tons of genuinely humorous dialogue, and wacky plot twists, JOHNNY X is the only sci-fi dark comedy musical romance you need to see this year! Beautifully photographed on the last of Kodak’s 35mm black and white Plus X film stock, the cast includes sexy new stars Will Keenan and De Anna Joy Brooks as well as seasoned professionals Creed Bratton ("The Office"), Reggie Bannister (Phantasm), Kate Maberly (The Secret Garden), Paul Williams (Phantom of the Paradise), and the late Kevin McCarthy (Invasion of the Body Snatchers) in his final role.

James McAvoy to Take Flight as The Crow? It's been a long while since last there was anything to report on the much talked about reboot of The Crow, but a rather juicy bit of possible casting news has begun making the rounds around the interwebs.

Bloody Disgusting is reporting that James McAvoy (X-Men: First Class, Wanted) is circling Relativity’s proposed remake. In the past every name from Bradley Cooper to Mark Wahlberg was being thrown around, but this... this we can see being a good fit.

F. Javier Gutierrez is still attached to direct from a screenplay by Jesse Wigutow. Brandon Lee made the franchise famous when he starred in the 1994 adaptation directed by Alex Proyas.

The Crow adaptation will be a gritty reboot of the iconic character Eric Draven, who returns from the grave as The Crow on a mission to avenge his wife’s murder so that his soul can finally rest. The original film is known for its breakthrough visual style as well as its unique production design and cinematography.

The project is currently in development with the start of production, targeted release dates, and casting to be announced.

Exclusive: Jim Mahfood Discusses Everybody Loves Tank Girl

Titan Books released Everybody Loves Tank Girl on February 22, 2013, so we recently sat down with Illustrator Jim Mahfood to discuss the book in further detail and get an insider look at the series and the new direction that comics are taking today. Read on to learn more!

AMANDA DYAR:Tank Girl is a series that has been around for many years and reached its height in fame during the mid 90s. How did you first get introduced to the series, and how did you get involved with Everybody Loves Tank Girl?

JIM MAHFOOD:I first discovered Tank Girl around 1993, my freshman year of college. It completely blew my mind. I had never seen or read anything else like it. Discovering Jamie Hewlett's artwork was a game changer for me.

I got involved with Everybody Loves Tank Girl when Alan Martin and I became friends on Facebook. We started chatting and he asked me to draw the book, and I completely freaked out and of course said yes. What a huge thrill!

AMANDA: For Everybody Loves Tank Girl, you teamed up with author Alan Martin to create a whole new chapter in the Tank Girl series. Can you tell us a bit about working together with Alan for this new project and how your art brings his story to life?

JIM:Yeah, it was a really easy collaborative process. Alan told me he was going to write a bunch of short stories and one-pagers and stuff, and I could draw them the way I wanted. He gave me a lot of creative freedom, which I think suits my art style the best. The more nuts and weird I'm allowed to get, the better the product. So Alan would basically email me the scripts and I would draw the stories one at a time. It was a painless process. Really fun.

AMANDA: Your work for Everybody Loves Tank Girl seems to have a real classic look to it that reminds us of comics we read ourselves while growing up. Is there a particular art style you try to portray in your work, or does it change from project to project. Also, who are some of your inspirations growing up and continuing as a professional artist today?

JIM: My style sort of changes up from gig to gig. The cool thing about this book is it's made up of various short stories so I was able to experiment a bit and change up the styles for each story. And some of the stuff was in full color, some one-color, some black & white, so I think that helped in varying up the material, too.

As far as inspirations go, I would say Jamie Hewlett, Ralph Steadman, Bill Sienkiewicz, Jack Davis, Ash Wood, Basquiat, Keith Haring, Sergio Toppi, Jack Kirby, and Steve Ditko are at the top of the list.

AMANDA:Everybody Loves Tank Girl looks like a very entertaining comic and a fun one to make. What is your favorite part about working on the series, and why should fans pick up the graphic novel when it releases at the end of the month from Titan Books publishing?

JIM:My favorite part was being able to put my spin on all these classic, iconic characters. You know, to be able to play around with the look of Tank Girl, her hair styles, her outfits and weapons and all that stuff, that was very thrilling. It's just fun material to draw. And it's written in a way that I could add my own secret artistic herbs and spices to it. Very flavorful.

Fan should pick up the book because it's Tank Girl, and Tank Girl totally fucking rocks!

Check out the official Titan Books website to learn more and pick up the book today!

Exclusive: Birdemic II: The Resurrection Flies into Theatres Early!

Here's some news that will ruffle your feathers! The sequel to Birdemic: Shock and Terror (review here), entitled Birdemic II: The Resurrection, will begin hitting theatres early; and we've got the first word! Read on for details.

From the Press Release:
The squawking fan gets the sequel – two months sooner than expected. The highly anticipated film ‘Birdemic 2: The Resurrection,’ written and directed by the Master of Romantic Thrillers™ James Nguyen, will be flying into select major cities worldwide in April 2013.

In response to an unexpectedly large number of fans being cuckoo for these killer birds, the film’s production company, I Got a Fish Productions, turned down standard distribution deals at the last minute to remain independent and push the self-theatrical distribution of ‘Birdemic 2: The Resurrection’ ahead of its previously anticipated June 2013 release date.

“The main reason behind our decision to bypass traditional distribution was simply to get this film into the fans’ hands quicker,” producer Jeff Gross said. “We had a private screening for a few media outlets last week, and the feedback was fantastic.” He adds, “James is a true Hollywood outsider, and his unique vision of Hollywood under ecological and avian distress is on full display in this film. We can’t wait for fans to take it all in.”

In this sequel to cult favorite ‘Birdemic: Shock and Terror,’ a flock of giant prehistoric eagles and vultures wreak havoc amidst blossoming love in Hollywood, California, leaving bloodshed and destruction wherever they hover. The story features original ‘Birdemic’ survivors Rod and Nathalie, who are joined by new friends as well as other Angelenos in their battle with these deranged birds. Fans can expect the same quality they’ve come to know from a James Nguyen film, only a whole lot more of it.

“My goal was to ensure that James had complete creative control over his sequel. He sees himself as a true auteur, and he’s dead serious about his craft,” Gross said. “I honestly had no idea how a ‘Birdemic’ sequel would turn out. But once I saw the script, I knew it had to be made. Creatively, I’m thrilled with the final product, and I’m happy to call this ‘an experiment that worked.’”

‘Birdemic 2: The Resurrection’ will be swooping in as a midnight movie at participating theaters, with director/producer Q&As and giveaways at select showings. Premieres have been set in April for Philadelphia, PA, and Paris, France. Stay tuned for updates.

Exclusive: Dread Central Chats with The Last Exorcism Part II's Ashley Bell

This Friday, March 1st, star Ashley Bell returns to the big screen as Nell Sweetzer for The Last Exorcism Part II, which was directed by Ed Gass-Donnelly and produced by Eli Roth.

During our recent interview with the actress, we heard more about the story of The Last Exorcism Part II and where we pick up with her characterl. Bell also discussed pushing herself even harder this time around both physically and emotionally and how her growing reputation as an asskicker after her turns in the original The Last Exorcism and The Day led to her getting her own fight scene and more in the upcoming The Marine: Homefront, too.

Read on for all the back-breaking highlights from our exclusive chat with Bell below, and look for The Last Exorcism Part II in theaters Friday courtesy of CBS Films.

Dread Central: Because you guys have been so secretive about the sequel and considering how crazy (and awesome) the first one ended, I really have no idea what to expect with The Last Exorcism Part II at all. Can you shed a little light on the story for us?

Ashley Bell:Well, this one picks up pretty much right where the last one ends - like literally during all of that craziness - so you'll see a continuation of Nell's story and see how she tries to rebuild her life after that. She doesn't remember anything about what happened to her so there are pieces of her memory that are missing, but it's in those missing pieces where the devil comes in, warps her sensibilities and begins to manipulate her once again.

In this movie we follow Nell to New Orleans so she's also thrown right into Mardi Gras, which means there is temptation everywhere and the devil knows that; he preys on that weakness so he presents all these temptations in her life and then very methodically takes them away, once again leaving her broken. Just a really great story, and it was wonderful to step back into this role and into my Docs (Martens) again.

Dread Central: Because this is a character that you really went all out for in the original, did you get to have any kind of input on Nell's story for the sequel?

Ashley Bell:I did in some ways; because the character was written so well once again, I was more focused on making sure I got to do all the physical stuff in the movie instead of a stunt double. I just wanted to push myself as far as I could. But the whole team is always very collaborative - Ed (Gass-Donnelly) and everyone at Strike - so when I do have some ideas, they're always really open to hearing what I have to say. To be able to collaborate with so many great people on such a wonderful and scary movie like this is really awesome.

One of my favorite, but probably hardest, days of filming for Part II was that backbend you see in the trailer where I'm levitating. It was like THE hardest thing I've ever done in a movie, but shooting that day was so fulfilling for me. I only had clearance to do the stunt like eight timesm but we pushed it to something between 16 to 20 times just so we could keep trying new things. There was a physical therapist on set to pop my shoulders in and out of socket between takes and they heated the bed for me, too, which helped with all the hyperextension I was doing to my body. It was a lot of fun, but I still don't think I've pushed myself like that ever before.

Related Story: Full The Last Exorcism Part II News Archive

Dread Central: Because you're putting yourself through so much both physically and emotionally, does it ever get to be too much for you on set?

Ashley Bell:Sometimes, but I'm just lucky to get to do something I love for a living so you have to take all those challenges in stride; it's part of the job. It's exhilarating to push yourself like this and then see that it all pays off when the movie comes out, and I've been really lucky because since the first Last Exorcism, I've been offered a lot of action roles in movies like The Day and The Marine: Homefront, which is awesome. I love doing action- those are my favorite sets to be on.

Dread Central: So you got to do more stunts for The Marine: Homefront then? How did you get involved with that project?

Ashley Bell:The Marine: Homefront happened because of my work in The Day; they saw that I could really handle myself in a more action-oriented role so they offered me a role opposite Mike (Mizanin- WWE Superstar "The Miz") where I get taken hostage and he has to come and rescue me. What was really cool, thoughm is that this character is a fighter by nature so she's not just the damsel in distress waiting to be saved.

Actually when I came on board, the director, Scott (Wiper), wrote in a whole fight scene for me because he knew my capabilities with all the physical stuff so that was really cool. I grew up loving action movies, and getting to play a strong female character in one was pretty fantastic.

Ed Gass-Donnelly directs The Last Exorcism Part II from a screenplay by Gass-Donnelly and Damien Chazelle. Ashley Bell stars. Look for The Last Exorcism Part II in US theaters on March 1st and in the UK on March 15th.

Stoker Press Conference Highlights with Chan-wook Park, Nicole Kidman, Matthew Goode and Mia Wasikowska

$

0

Arriving in theaters this weekend is iconic Korean filmmaker Chan-wook Park's English-language directorial debut, Stoker, an often macabre and darkly comedic thriller that stars Nicole Kidman, Matthew Goode and Mia Wasikowska.

Written by Wentworth Miller ("Prison Break"), Stoker is a coming-of-age story that follows a teenage girl named India (Wasikowska), who is forced to deal with her own inner demons after a tragedy befalls her family on her 18th birthday. Conveniently, her very charismatic but mysterious long-lost Uncle Charlie (Goode) rides into town, sweeping both India and her attention-starved mother, Evelyn (Kidman), off their feet, revealing all kinds of twisted family secrets and bad blood amongst the trio.

During a recent press conference, we heard from director Park as well as Kidman, Goode and Wasikowska about their experiences collaborating on Stoker as well as what aspects of Miller's script attracted them to the project initially. The trio of co-stars also discussed some of their favorite moments from the film, director Park explained how he had to adapt to the faster production pace of Hollywood for the very first time on Stoker and much, much more about the intricacies of the film and director Park's vision for the film.

Read on for all the highlights from the Stoker press conference below, and make sure to check out the latest from director Park when it's released this Friday.

Question:  Director Park, it's great to see your movie, which just played Sundance, and The Last Stand come out within a week of each other; how was your Hollywood experience, and have you seen Kim Jee-Woon's film yet?

Chan-wook Park:No, I haven't seen it; it's not been released in Korea yet, and ever since I arrived in America to promote Stoker, I haven't had time to go and see it in a theater either.  And so the fact that I had to shoot twice as fast as I'm used to in Korea for Stoker was the most challenging thing about my Hollywood experience.  The difference in Korea is that what I do is watch the playback of each take with all of the actors and spend a lot of time discussing each take with them.

I also use the process we call auto-assembly because I storyboard my entire film right at the beginning - even before pre-production ever begins - so that my vision is already laid out on the storyboard for everybody to see. That enables the on-set assembly person to cut together each take into a sequence and this enables a director to review the take within the context of the sequence of the scene.  So not only do I look at the playback with the actors but I look at the on-set assembly footage with the sequences with my actors as well.

These are the reasons why I take twice as much time to shoot a film in Korea.  Thinking back, I can remember on my first ever Korean film that I never used any playback or on-set assembly so all I had to do was to tell myself that making Stoker was just like making my first ever Korean-language film.  After that, I felt right at home.

Question: For Matthew, Nicole and Mia, what was it about your characters that drew you to play them?

Nicole Kidman:  For me, it was primarily the combination of the cast and the film being spearheaded by director Park; I knew his films and I had always wanted to work with him. Plus I thought the combination of this script with his direction would be really unusual. When I saw it for the first time at Sundance last week, I was like, "Wow!" which is a definitely great reaction to have (laughs).

Matthew Goode:Well, for me I had a slightly different experience; I've talked before about the fact that Colin vacated the role so I was very lucky to get cast in this movie.  But as far as the actual character and wanting to do it, of course it was about director Park and these two beautiful ladies to my left; that's true. But the role was so psychologically interesting and I got to go on a little trip with it.  It was confusing and brilliant and wonderful and all those things, and I went, "I'd like to be involved with this if it's all right," and luckily director Park said I could be, which was thrilling.  Wouldn't it be amazing to have twice as much time with him to make a film? Why aren't we making more films in Korea? (laughs).

Mia Wasikowska:For me, it was the same thing- to work with director Park and this cast and the fact that India was a very different character to anything that I'd played before. I was excited about that.

Question: When you have a cast that speaks a different language than their director, how does the universal language of film and storytelling manifest itself, and does that create more interesting performances?

Matthew Goode:One of the first films I ever did was in Spanish and I don't speak Spanish and that's as hard as it's going to get, doing a film in a different language. But as far as with what voice do I listen in, it was really easy.

Nicole Kidman:There are times when you have to clarify certain things because obviously words can mean different things in other languages, and so a lot of times it would be me just wondering if this is exactly what he wants because in translation things can get lost so I was just very specific with him.

Chan-wook Park:Actors are professionals who deal with people's emotions and their thoughts so working with this very intelligent cast meant that sometimes I would only have to start speaking a word and these wonderful actors would immediately catch on to what I wanted them to portray and how I wanted them to act.  I never really had any issues communicating with them.

Question: For the actors, could you talk about your first impressions when you read the script by Wentworth Miller, and is there a difference between a script written by an actor as opposed to a screenwriter, or is a good script just a good script?

Mia Wasikowska:You know, I think a good script is just a good script. I thought it was amazing the first time I read it, and I was instantly drawn into this world and these really complex characters and the mystery within all of them.

Nicole Kidman:I had to read it a couple of times to understand it just because it's got a lot of subtext and layers, so I wanted to absorb what the overall feeling of it was. I think the strength of director Park is his atmosphere; he creates incredible atmosphere, and this script relies heavily on the language of the images because there's not a lot of dialogue so the cinematic language of it has to be very strong. When I had a meeting with him, we talked about all of that, and it was extraordinary how detailed and precise he was in what he knew he wanted to say, and his use of color and sound and everything is all very specific and it's not by chance; that's something that fills in a lot in a script like this.

When we first met, director Park said to me about Mia and my relationship, "Ever since you've held this baby, this baby's never wanted to be held." That's an amazing way to start building the relationship of a mother and child because that's horrifying as a mother if your baby doesn't want to be held by you.  That was fascinating to me.

Question: For Mia and Nicole, there's a scene where Evie finally confronts India, which is very powerful. Could you each talk about shooting that scene?

Nicole Kidman:That's a really intense scene, and I love that scene because it's so unusual.  I remember reading it, and I never expected it to end with that line of, "I can't wait to watch life tear you apart."  From where it starts to where it ends, that's an amazing monologue.  To make that scene, which is because of the way director Park shoots (you know, really intense and close up), we did it a number of different ways, but we shot it in one shot, which is fantastic as an actor to not be cut up and edited.  It gets to play out that way, and I was very grateful that he had the vote of confidence in me to be able to do it because it's a really weird scene.

Mia Wasikowska:It's a pretty amazing scene and very scary to be on the receiving end of, too (laughs).

Chan-wook Park:That scene is a very important scene for Evie's (Kidman) character. In the original Wentworth Miller script the monologue ends with, "I can't wait until life tears you apart."  But during the preparation period Nicole and I agreed to bring some other aspects to this character in that Evie's not just an oppressive, pathetic mother. Deep down inside she actually loves her daughter very much, but in seeing this great seed of evil flowering within her daughter, Evie feels this raw aggression. And so after this long monologue of cursing her own daughter, she is actually surprised at how she can be so aggressive towards her own daughter and says to India, "Who are you? Aren't you supposed to love me?" This is something that came out of these conversations with Nicole during rehearsal, and in fact, it was also a line of dialogue that Nicole came up with during rehearsals.

Nicole Kidman:It goes back to what director Park originally said to me, which is that her own child doesn't love her and she doesn't understand why; she doesn't feel that she knows her own child, and that's a terrifying premise. But then to say to your own child, "Who are you?" - that's interesting to me; that's a fascinating sort of dynamic to explore.

Question: For Mia and Matthew, when you're portraying characters that do some incredibly evil things, do you as an actor have to find a way to relate to, understand and like these characters, and if so, how do you do that?

Mia Wasikowska:I've often found on the films that have a more serious nature, the more goofy and silly it becomes, that in-between stuff seems almost out of necessity to counter the intensity of the other scenes and material. I felt like we were pretty good at that.

Matthew Goode:Yeah, this movie is sort of a psychological investigation because otherwise it wouldn't have a point; it certainly wouldn't be the kind of film I'd want to make, not that any of us believe in censoring our film or anything like that. But overall I just want it to make sense because Charlie's been away on holiday so in that sense, everyone is detached; they're all so completely away from anywhere, so much so that we don't know where it is or what time period it is really. It was fascinating to peel back the layers as it was happening because I think Charlie quite likes watching it unfold and he's very good at being on his own.

I think I just wanted to make him a little bit like the fucked up Peter Pan that he is really because it's a coming-of-age story for India. But really, how held back he is? So we have to bring it all together and make it three-dimensional I suppose, and that was really the challenge here.

Question: The sound design is compelling, and then there's the odd dynamic going on between all the characters and the chemistry and sometimes lack thereof. What were your impressions the first time you saw it, and how do you think it fits in compared to other films in this genre?

Nicole Kidman:Well, I'm not sure what genre it fits into; it's hard to define it. I was amazed at the filmmaking because you don't see that kind of filmmaking that often.  But then a lot of the stuff I hadn't seen because I'm not in it, too. But this sort of detailed filmmaking is one, hard to do and not have it end up being pretentious and two, to have it tell the story, which is what you're taught- that cinema is the language of images and you really should be able to make a film with no dialogue and tell a story. I think director Park should do that next (laughs).

Question: For Mia and Matthew, can you elaborate on your pivotal piano duet scene?  How did the two of you approach shooting that intensely emotional scene?

Mia Wasikowska:I really liked it because I felt like I didn't have to do much (laughs); we had playback going and it's such an intense and amazing piece. I think we listened to it all day and the rest of the crew was wilting just a little more each time we replayed it. But I was like, "Yeah! Again!" because when the music is there, I almost don't have to do much except surrender to it and then all the feeling and emotion I felt was in the piece.

Matthew Goode:We were able to play good little sections, which meant we were able to give director Park options to shoot from behind, and I think it's always nice to be able to see everything in a scene like that because I think we all know the language of film; we all know that when you see somebody playing something, you're like, "Well, they're not playing that," and then he's able to show you that they are.  It's kind of fucking with the audience in a new way- it's quite nice (laughs).

People talk about chemistry, but I just loved Mia and Nicole because you never know how it's going to work out no matter how good the script is or how much of a genius your director is. I think that's one of the reasons that doing the piano scene really worked because there was an element of trust because we're not very good.  (To Mia) You're better than I was. You're just in it, aren't you?  It's all of that, really was a ruse (laughs).

Chan-wook Park:When the DVD comes out, and if you watch the film multiple times, you'll be amazed to find two things. First is how much of the actual playing of the piano was done by Matthew and Mia, and secondly, not only that, but how much acting was going on there as well. They weren't only trying to focus on getting their fingers right; at the same time, they were perfectly encapsulating the emotion of these characters during those moments.

Matthew Goode:Thanks, boss (laughs).

Original Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Director Taking on Flatliners

Original Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Director Taking on FlatlinersThere's been interest in doing a modernized version of the 1990 Joel Schumacher movie Flatliners for a very long time now. After years of talking about it, word has come that the remake has landed a director. One hell of a director.

Bloody Disgusting is reporting that The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and "Under the Dome" pilot director Niels Arden Oplev has signed on to direct the redux, and we can only hope that Kiefer Sutherland (arguably the best part of the original) will be brought back for more. The remake has been penned by Ben Ripley.

The original Flatliners centered on a group of medical students – Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon, Julia Roberts, and William Baldwin – who subject themselves to near-death experiences in order to see if anything lies beyond the big sleep. The members of the group then are revisited by physical manifestations of childhood sins and are not sure if what they are facing is real or hallucination.

Gothica Lands ShowrunnersShowrunners have finally been named for the new ABC series "Gothica," and they bring with them some genre cred. Whether or not that will be enough to finally push the series over the top for the network remains to be seen, but we're rooting for them.

Deadline reports that "Reaper" creators Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas have signed an overall deal with ABC Studios. Under the two-year pact, the writing-producing duo is joining the studio’s ABC drama pilot "Gothica," co-produced by ABC Studio-based Mark Gordon Co. Butters and Fazekas will serve as executive producers/showrunners, working alongside creator/executive producer Matt Lopez (The Sorcerer's Apprentice), who wrote the pilot.

Janet Montgomery ("Made in Jersey,""Entourage,"Wrong Turn 3: Left for Dead, The Hills Run Red) will play Grace Van Helsing, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist from New York who takes over her family’s hometown newspaper. Dorian Gray (Chris Egan) provides her with the $20 million she needs to retain control of the paper, and she was romantically involved with Victor Frankenstein (Tom Ellis) years ago.

In this incarnation of the story Frankenstein runs a hospital that also does biotech research and believes that he may have a way to bring his recently deceased daughter back to life. Gray is a wealthy playboy.

More on this one soon!

Set Report: Park Chan-wook's Stoker

$

Fans of Park Chan-wook (Oldboy, Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance, Thirst) living in Nashville, Tennessee were probably shocked to see the famed Korean director strolling down the streets of their town in late 2011, but rest assured he wasn’t just checking out the sights... he was actually making a movie.

Stoker, featuring Academy Award-winning actress (and Nashville resident) Nicole Kidman, finally makes its way into theaters this Friday, March 1st, from Fox Searchlight and thankfully, Director Park’s first English-language effort does not disappoint.

Working from a meticulously crafted and widely heralded script by Wentworth Miller, Park and cinematographer Chung-hoon Chung were able to develop a hyper-stylized, highly detailed world set within the confines of a seemingly idyllic family estate. A quiet war is already brewing between Evelyn Stoker (Kidman) and her joyfully disenfranchised teenage daughter, India (Wasikowska), when the mysterious and dapper Uncle Charlie (Goode) comes to stay after the sudden death of India's father - a visit that becomes a catalyst for India to uncover her true nature as the family's dark history is slowly revealed.

When myself and three other journalists visited the set of Stoker way back in October 2011, it turned out that the first scene we saw filmed potentially exposed one of the biggest secrets in Stoker family history, which of course meant that what we were seeing might be spoiling a significant moment in the film. Without saying too much, the sequence featured Tyler von Tagen and Thomas A. Convert as the younger versions of Richard and Charlie Stoker playing innocently on a weathered playscape towards the back of the estate grounds. The next setup showed Charlie alone in the playground's sandbox, gleefully kicking up and fanning out his legs and arms in the shape of an angel. Now, having seen the film, this moment is mirrored by India years later as she lays in her bed, although she has no knowledge of Charlie when he was younger or what actually happened that day. Director Park and his DP quietly talk amongst themselves as the crane arm of the camera hovers above young Charlie, only stopping to give specific instruction to the actor and make minute adjustments with the camera. The director's incredible attention to detail is already on display within the first few minutes of filming we observe. Finally seeing the scene in the finished film gave it even greater impact after seeing where it was placed in the edit and how significant the incident is in the family’s history.

Being on set in the final days of principal photography proved hectic, with multiple takes of seemingly innocuous scenes eating into any time we would have had to interview Director Park and Mia Wasikowska (cast and crew interviews coming later this week), although the events of the day (or lack thereof) provided a very relaxed, almost hypnotic quality to the next couple of setups we saw. In the longest scene of the day, another flashback scene shows Richard Stoker (Tagen) mowing the great lawn out in front of the family estate when, suddenly, a wave of shock washes over him as he runs panicked towards the playground where his younger brothers had been playing. The camera focuses on the erratic dance of the now unmanned antique lawn mower, with Director Park obviously more interested in the composition and timing of the shot then just simply getting from point A to point B in the scene. Seeing the patience and the discipline on display, it’s no small feat that principal photography operated on an accelerated pace with filming completed in only 480 hours. The intense storyboarding in pre-production was evident during that shot and, as a result of all that planning, it was of no concern how long it was going to take to get it exactly right.

The last setup of the day takes place towards the end of the film (it turns out), as India Stoker slinks into an exquisite Jaguar convertible and drives off down the driveway, an overnight bag and a pair of garden shears in the passenger seat next to her. This scene was shot a handful of times, taking nowhere near as long as the lawn mower setups earlier in the day.

Studios always prefer to have journalists come out to visit a set on a particularly active day when important scenes are being hashed out. That’s why it seemed a little peculiar that these scenes were selected for us to view. But after seeing the film in its entirety, they were either a setup or a payoff during substantial moments in the film so their inclusion was essential.

Or, maybe it didn’t really matter what scenes were shot that day. After all, a tour of the Stoker Estate in all of its intricate wonder unveiled more about the characters and the look of Stoker than any one scene probably could have. The winding staircase serves as the spot where a monumental confrontation in the film takes place; the hunting trophies on display in the study suggest a history of violence; India’s bedroom shows yellow-walled innocence while Evelyn’s bedroom looks like an overgrown jungle in need of attention.

Then, there’s the basement. A small stone staircase leads down to a dank and dingy room below. We’re told that a horrible act took place and that we were not allowed to look in the large meat freezer in the corner. Then, we journeyed back up to the unsettling, green-tinged walls of the foyer and back into the outside world.

Luckily, Mia Wasikowska came over and said hello in between pick-up’s. One such set up involving her character showed an extreme closeup of India popping a blister on her toe which was just as unsettling as it sounds. After speaking with her for a minute or so it was apparent that she was wearing contacts that, at least off camera, turned her eyes a sharp blue with a blood-red iris in the center. We all noticed it and spoke of it afterwards, and it does appear that all three actors in the Stoker family display the same, piercing blue eyes. It’s used to great effect when the family interacts with each other, showing the similarities between the characters and how they’re sizing each other up in any given moment.

Director Park also came over briefly and was gracious enough to shake our hands and introduce himself. Luckily, Dread will be doing an interview with Park Chan-wook this Thursday so be sure to check back. Observing Director Park employ his visual mastery over the medium firsthand reminded me that little dialogue, if any, is needed to speak the language of cinema. Even though the story is contained and strikingly intimate, the circumstances feel bigger and the characters seem larger once you realize that everything in Stoker probably means something.

Mia Wasikowska, Nicole Kidman, Matthew Goode, Jacki Weaver, Lucas Till, Dermot Mulroney, Phyllis Somerville, and Alden Ehrenreich star in the film directed by Park Chan-wook. Look for Stoker in theatres on March 1st, 2013.
