Go Behind the Scenes of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and Meet Magnus Bane

We're still several months away from the August release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, which gives us plenty of time to become acquainted with the characters. On tap today we meet Magnus Bane, played by Godfrey Gao.

MTV News visited with Gao on set on his first day of shooting — a party scene which found the 28-year-old sans pants. "It's really cold,"he told them. "...I'm just hanging out with my boxers on and everyone sees... I have great legs. But it's very fun to play Magnus Bane, as you can see."

The actor understands the great responsibility he's undertaken portraying the fan-favorite character from Cassandra Clare's series about the secret world of the demon-destroying Shadowhunters. "There's actually a really big pressure because I know there are a lot of fans out there, and everyone loves Magnus Bane, and I love Magnus Bane,"he said. "So I just wanted to play a sort of cool-looking Magnus Bane, but I also wanted to bring out the flamboyant side, the party side of Magnus Bane, so hopefully everybody can enjoy what I bring to you on screen."

No kidding everyone loves him; in fact, an extra Magnus scene was written into the screenplay that didn't originally appear in the book. "It is really cool,"Gao said of the bonus moment. "This whole ride has been amazing. I've really got to thank everybody... This is my first English feature. I'm actually pretty nervous doing this interview now. I never do any interviews in English, it was always in Mandarin before."

Guillermo del Toro Sheds a Little Light on His Plans for DC Comics' Dark Universe

Few films have us more excited on a purely geek level than Guillermo del Toro's take on DC Comics'Dark Universe. As you would imagine, details are scant and the powers-that-be are tight-lipped, but Del Toro did pull back the curtain a little recently.

"I am going to be presenting my storyline to DC and Warners of where I want to take this universe," Del Toro tells Total Film during a recent interview regarding Mama. "We do have a writer, but until that is firmed up, I have to keep it a secret. I hope it happens. It's going really, really well. It's like meeting old friends. I grew up with Demon Etrigan, with Swamp Thing, with Deadman, so these are characters that are near and dear to my heart."

When asked if he'd be focused on the current storyline of the comic or go back to the beginning, Del Toro responded, "I'd love to use the origins that are proper to each character. I love the idea of Jason Blood as a paladin and a knight... I love the entire Constantine mythology, the Dead Man mythology, the Alex Holland Swamp Thing mythology. These are really rich things to well and to dig."

Sasha Grey Steams Up the First Open Windows One-Sheet

The first one-sheet has arrived for the next film from Spanish filmmaker Nacho Vigalondo, his first English-language picture, Open Windows, and it proves that adding Sasha Grey to anything makes it hotter by default!

Open Windows, an innovative, high-tech suspense thriller unfolding on the screen of a laptop connected to the Internet, is Vigalondo’s third feature after the 2008 time-traveling tale Timecrimes and Extraterrestrial, a hit on the fantasy film festival circuit over the past 12 months.

Elijah Wood’s production company Woodshed, Basque broadcaster ETB, and Canal Plus are associated partners.

“Open Windows develops in real time, delivering 90 minutes of suspense in a tense, fast-paced, high-tech thriller with action and terror, updating the key elements of 70s paranoid thrillers through today’s computer and online environment,” said Wild Bunch sales chief Vincent Maraval.

The plot revolves around a desperate search by Wood’s character for an actress, played by The Girlfriend Experience lead Sasha Grey, who has been abducted by vicious villain Chord, played by British actor Neil Maskell.

The director began developing the picture three years ago with Apaches Entertainment and his own production company Sayaka. “Just as in Brian De Palma’s Blow Out, the girl is captured. The hero will have to use every means at his disposal to discover where she is and rescue her from the villain before it's too late,” said Vigalondo. “The action will be followed on the screen of a laptop connected to the Internet – an approach that has excited us all from the outset. Something like this means going beyond high concept films like Paranormal Activity, Cloverfield or Chronicle,” he continued. “Instead of simulating a home video camera, we will be representing a computer desktop. The movie screen becomes a computer screen, and the spectator becomes the protagonist of this adventure.”

Spanish producer Lavigne revealed the production would use 12 different types of cameras, including webcams, head cameras, tablets, mobile phones, 3D mapping cameras as well as security and satellite cameras, to shoot the multi-format picture. “Open Windows is full of twists, but it’s essentially a 90-minute chase, a continuous climax with unrelenting tension… it is also a powerful viral tool, with a wide potential for different audiences,” he said.

Vigalondo approached Wood to play the lead after a chance meeting at the Fantastic Fest in Austin in 2011. “I’ve wanted to work with Nacho since I first saw Timecrimes and his incredible short films,” said Wood. “We got to know one another at Fantastic Fest in Austin, and when he approached me with this project, truly one of the most unique and exciting films I’ve ever encountered, I leapt at the chance to be a part of it.”

Official Trailer, More Stills, and Premiere Info for Dr. Frankenstein's Wax Museum of the Hungry Dead

Hands down our favorite title right now is Dr. Frankenstein's Wax Museum of the Hungry Dead, and the film now has an official trailer and a release date. Read on for the details and a few new stills.

From the Press Release:
Scorpio Film Releasing, the Rhode Island-based production company behind Nun of That and The Disco Exorcist, are set to premiere their 13th feature film production, Dr. Frankenstein's Wax Museum of the Hungry Dead, on March 24th. In anticipation of the premiere, Scorpio Film Releasing presents the official full-length trailer for the film.

A celebration of horror and the genre's greatest personalities, Dr. Frankenstein's Wax Museum of the Hungry Dead is a terrifying, often funny experiment in terror starring Michael Thurber (Murder University) in a new and twisted take on the sadistic Dr. Frankenstein. The film is directed by Richard Griffin from a script by Seth Chitwood and Griffin. Dr. Frankenstein's Wax Museum of the Hungry Dead follows a group of teenagers who spend the night in a creepy wax museum in Salem, Massachusetts, only to find out that it's the secret lair of Dr. Frankenstein, who has been performing profane experiments on the town residents to create… piece by piece… the ultimate nightmare.

The world premiere of Dr. Frankenstein's Wax Museum of the Hungry Dead will be March 24th at the beautiful Cinemaworld Theater in Lincoln, Rhode Island. There will be two screenings of the film - at 7pm and 9pm. Tickets will be just $10 at the door and will soon be available online. The film is intended for mature audiences only. While unrated, the film contains violence, gore, adult language, and adult themes.

Director Richard Griffin says "I couldn't be more thrilled with how this movie turned out. Dr. Frankenstein's Wax Museum is a wild, gory ride that pays loving homage not only to the Hammer horrors of the late 50s and 60s but also to the more freewheeling movies of Jess Franco and the blood-soaked films of Herschell Gordon Lewis. The performances, the cinematography, and the special make-up effects are simply amazing, even for a micro-budget film such as this one. I think audience members are really going to eat up this kinky mix of horror and humor that we've served up!"

Dr. Frankenstein's Wax Museum of the Hungry Dead presents actress Jamie Lyn Bagley and also stars Jesse Dufault (Murder University), Shannon Hartman, Johnny Sederquist, Aurora Grabill (The Disco Exorcist), Patrick Keeffe (Murder University), Aaron Peaslee (Murder University), Christopher Ferreira (The Disco Exorcist), Nat Sylva (Murder University), Ryan Hanley (Murder University), Beatriz Lopez, Andre Boudreau (Nun of That).

Report: Things Get Spooky While Ghost Hunting at The William Heath Davis House in San Diego

$

Being a paranormal buff, I've been on a lot of ghost hunting expeditions. Each time I managed to capture one or two cool things that were unexplained, but usually it's a lot of walking around and listening to stories. Not this time.

The William Heath Davis House hit our radar a few weeks ago when my significant other, Debi, noted that a ghost hunting event had been planned. Of course we bought tickets, and the countdown to zero hour was on. One thing that immediately grabbed our attention was that this was actually proposed to be more of a hunt and less of a tour. The usual ghost tours kind of suck as you're not allowed to really investigate anything. Not here and not with The San Diego Ghost Hunters. The team spearheaded by Maritza Skandunas and her cohorts Colleen Rose, Julie Haney, and Sandee Wilhoit take their investigating seriously and aren't afraid of throwing you directly on the front lines of the paranormal. More on that in a moment. First let's take a look at the house itself.

When it comes to haunted locations in San Diego, a few places immediately spring to mind, specifically The Whaley House, which is reported to be one of the most haunted homes in America. Having toured and been there, I can tell you first-hand... in terms of paranormal phenomenon it doesn't have ANYTHING on the William Heath Davis House.

Report: Things Get Spooky While Ghost Hunting at The William Heath Davis House in San Diego

As per the SDGH:

William Heath Davis was the first man who attempted to build what we know today as downtown San Diego. In 1850 he began his New Town by the bay, by purchasing a shipment of pre-cut wooden houses from Portland, Maine. They were shipped around Cape Horn to San Diego Bay.

In 1867 Alonzo E. Horton and his wife, Sarah, traveled to San Diego with the plan of succeeding where Davis had failed. Horton purchased 960 acres of land and a one-half interest in the Davis house. He and Sarah lived in the house while his mansion was being built. Horton opened a real estate office in San Francisco and began selling his new land. Thanks to his shrewd business skills and timing, he was able to begin the first real estate boom in San Diego.

The Davis is the only house left standing in San Diego where Horton resided.

The Davis house has been located on 3 lots during its lifetime:

  • State and Market Street (erected in 1850)
  • 11th and K Street (moved by horses in 1873)
  • And currently, 4th and Island (moved by truck in 1984)

The house has been rumored to be haunted for years because of the many colorful characters who have resided in the house. Not only was the house a residence to many, it was also a hospital for about ten years where many deaths from consumption and tetanus have been recorded. The house was also an officers' quarters prior to the Civil War and was reported to have a WWI German spy in hiding who used the house for his purposes. He was later captured and researchers have made contact with his angry spirit.

Upon entering the house for the first time, we were immediately greeted by the investigative team and treated to a short history lesson along with some pretty compelling stuff which they captured over the years, including images of apparitions and some truly Class A EVPs (Electronic Voice Phenomenon). After about fifteen minutes members of our group were handed EMF (electro magetic field) readers, and the hunt commenced.

Report: Things Get Spooky While Ghost Hunting at The William Heath Davis House in San Diego

The entire time we were there, we were encouraged to take as many photos as possible. First on our agenda was a session with an Ovilus. For those unacquainted with the device, it basically allows a spirit, if present, to speak through it using a database of words it has stored in its memory. Now that may sound kind of hokey, but when you witness direct communication with this thing in which it is giving answers to questions being asked, it may change your mind. During our session it actually pinpointed that Debi and myself were in the entertainment industry. No one there, including the team members, knew that. Make of that what you will.

From there the team took us around to various rooms of the house that had some form of historical significance pertaining to what we were all doing there. In the parlor room we engaged in a dousing rod session, a practice which makes it possible for spirits to communicate by moving the rods in a user's hands. It was during this session that we caught our first EVP which definitely wasn't human.

In the following MP3 you can clearly hear a cat meowing. Click here for EVP. What's interesting about this is that it was DEAD SILENT in the room. And hey, I'm a cat person. If I would have heard this, I would have immediately been like, "Wow! Where's the kitty?" No one heard this until the recording was reviewed a short time after.

Click "NEXT" below for more including some startling EVPs and images!

From there we moved into the kitchen, where it is said the ghosts of children play. The team brings in trigger objects, in this case toys, to try and stir up the ghosts. Two of the favorite articles left for them are stuffed teddy bears and crayons. During our EVP session two voices communicated with us.

When asked what their favorite toy is, a voice answered, "Bear."Click here for EVP. When asked what the child's favorite color is, a voice answered, "Blue."Click here for EVP.

Report: Things Get Spooky While Ghost Hunting at The William Heath Davis House in San Diego

Mind you, these recordings were checked IMMEDIATELY after each person in our group got to ask a question. There was no time for manipulation of the audio track, and again the room was pin-drop quiet. Pretty compelling stuff.

From there we headed upstairs. Speaking of which, one of the home's entities is said to be something known as The Lady in Black. As you can see from the picture I took with my iPhone on our way up the stairs, a strange misty spot appeared on the image alongside the bannister. Not saying this is a ghost; I just don't know what the hell it is.

Report: Things Get Spooky While Ghost Hunting at The William Heath Davis House in San Diego

Upstairs.... I'm still a little freaked out by it. Directly to the right of the staircase is a children's room. To its left you'll find an office. Let me just say this... I consider myself a rational human being. Do I believe in ghosts or spirits, I answer that with a guarded "Yes" but I have to experience something for myself for it to have any real credibility or impact on me. The most common things caught on film and digital cameras are orbs. I put no stock in these things at all because we all know by now that 99.9% of them are caused by dust and or moisture. I expected to get lots of orbs while exploring the house. What I didn't bargain for was the veritable light show that I ended up capturing.

Click "NEXT" below for more including some startling EVPs and images!

Here's an example... This is Debi in the kids' room...

Report: Things Get Spooky While Ghost Hunting at The William Heath Davis House in San Diego

What the hell is that on her right? An insect? I'd buy that, but this thing was moving too erratically for me to say for sure. It had purpose and was making some pretty sharp stop-on-a-dime turns. I backed out of the room and turned toward the opposite wall and caught this...

Report: Things Get Spooky While Ghost Hunting at The William Heath Davis House in San Diego

I then leaned over the staircase railing and got this...

Report: Things Get Spooky While Ghost Hunting at The William Heath Davis House in San Diego

I kept snapping away the photos. By the time I got to the opposite sides of the hall, these things were running amok between the children's room and the office. Take a look...

I backed into the room to my right, which was the master bedroom and caught this...

Report: Things Get Spooky While Ghost Hunting at The William Heath Davis House in San Diego

I went back out into the spot where I was getting pictures and took three in succession. What that is on the left in the center photo is beyond me. My iPhone has no camera straps. There was no one next to me, and there certainly weren't any windows or curtains around. Again, I AM NOT saying that all these are ghosts, but I am saying that in all my years I had never experienced anything like this. Especially to this degree.

Report: Things Get Spooky While Ghost Hunting at The William Heath Davis House in San Diego

From there myself and Debi had gone back to the children's room. I don't know how to explain it but the whole feeling in this room is very... well... off. It's just heavy, man. Colleen decided that it was time to do another EVP session. The room is supposedly haunted by the spirit of one Mrs. Mountain, who had tragically lost her children. For my money this produced the most bone-chilling moment of the night. We were all in the room. Aside from some background noise coming from outside which is audible, it was VERY quiet in the room. Colleen asked if Mrs. Mountain was there and if she wanted to talk. In the recording below you will hear an old woman say, "Okay."Click here for EVP. If I wasn't standing in that room, I would so call bullshit on this. But there we were... standing right there in silence. No one heard ANYTHING until the recording was reviewed, and that transpired literally seconds later.

We tried again.... this was the only other one that we got. We enhanced the audio a bit because it was very low, but again it's the same old woman's voice! Click here for EVP.

The only other EVP we captured that night is just a breathy one, but here it is for posterity's sake.

With that our night was over, and again, it yielded some pretty damned compelling stuff. We all see what we want to see and hear what we want to hear. All we can do is document and theorize. I'll say this though; we got much more than we bargained for that night in the Gaslamp, and if you think we're bullshitting you, then sign up for your own tour here. Be quick as they sell out fast. It should also be noted that all the proceeds from these tours go directly toward the upkeep of this wonderfully haunted house.

    But wait! There's more!

Click "NEXT" below for more including some startling EVPs and images!

All that being said... the San Diego Ghost Hunters also sent us over some of their best captures from the house - images and EVPs. Check them out below.

  • One of the spirits singing along to a bluegrass song used as a trigger object. The lyrics are "Get it right."Click here for EVP.
  • From a dousing rods session a spirit says, "Look at me."Click here for EVP.
  • One of the military people known to have stayed in the house was a Stephen Centrell. The following was from his Ovilus session. Click here for EVP.
  • Colleen was being flirtatious at Christmastime with a spirit whose wife took exception telling him, "You come now!"Click here for EVP.
  • In the kitchen a spirit points out which crayon he or she wants. "That one."Click here for EVP.

The following pictures were taken while looking at one of the second floor windows. There are no balconies.

  • Doctor Gash's Top 10 Greatest Horror Movies... EVER! #2 - The Texas Chain Saw Massacre

    $
    0
    0

The #2 Greatest Horror Movie... Ever! is The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. In fact, it's my personal favorite horror movie. If you and I were going to sit down together and check out a horror movie and you asked me to pick it, it'd be The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

There is one above it on the list, but it's not as fun as this one!

    #2-The Texas Chain Saw Massacre

(Gash's note: Yeah, it looks weird, but the actual spelling of the film's title in the opening credits has the word "chainsaw" split into two words. Subsequent sequels and remakes would use the traditional spelling, chainsaw).

"The film which you are about to see is an account of the tragedy which befell a group of five youths, in particular Sally Hardesty and her invalid brother, Franklin. It is all the more tragic in that they were young. But, had they lived very, very long lives, they could not have expected, nor would they have wished to see, as much of the mad and macabre as they were to see that day. For them an idyllic summer afternoon drive became a nightmare. The events of that day were to lead to the discovery of one of the most bizarre crimes in the annals of American history, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre."

Doctor Gash's Top 10 Greatest Horror Movies... EVER! #2 - The Texas Chain Saw Massacre

It is with this intro, read by John Laroquette (this bit of John Laroquette trivia was much more impressive when people immediately knew who John Laroquette was and you didn't have to go into a whole explanation about "Night Court" being the show on after "Cheers," etc.) that we descend into one of the greatest horror films in the annals of American history: The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

Everything about this film is perfect. The chilling intro, the underlying story of grave-robbing and Edwin Neal’s unforgettable portrayal of The Hitchhiker (and I do mean unforgettable; I remember many a night as a young man, lying awake in bed trying not to see that nut grabbing Franklin's knife and slicing his own hand open... but it simply wouldn't go away). Once its hooks are into you, you're not shaking Texas Chain Saw, ever.

Filmed on a paper-thin budget, this movie implies so much more than it shows. The casual viewer will remember gallons of blood being spilled on the screen, when in fact there was very little stage blood used during the filming. They will tell you that a chill went down their spine when they saw that meat hook come through the front of Pam's (Terri McMinn) chest. That never happened either. Director Tobe Hooper did a masterful job making you remember things you didn't actually see. And he needed to, as the film’s budget was under $300,000, shoestrings even in 1974.

Doctor Gash's Top 10 Greatest Horror Movies... EVER! #2 - The Texas Chain Saw Massacre

But what was created on that meager budget would go on to inspire absolute legions of followers. Let me describe a movie for you: a group of teens/young adults venture out into the woods/hillside/rural area, and after their car breaks down/blows a tire/runs out of gas, they realize they are being hunted by a family/tribe/pack of deranged/deformed/cannibalistic weirdos. Sound familiar? The Hills Have Eyes, Wrong Turn, House of 1000 Corpses, Wolf Creek and Malevolence come to mind immediately; and I'm sure you can conjure up dozens of other titles. They all must tip their cap to the original, and still the best, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

As with all truly horrific films, the tension in Chain Saw is palpable. Hooper built it by making us wonder just how demented the Sawyer Clan was and how far this nightmare would go. He reveals the answer to us in the now infamous dinner scene as Sally Hardesty (Marilyn Burns) sees just exactly how twisted the family is when Grandpa is brought in to join the festivities. And Burns is brilliant. It is the sheer terror she channels that makes the final 25 minutes of the film legendary. The movie is gritty, the intro tells us that it's real, and to watch Burns in action with the killers, you could almost believe it is.

Doctor Gash's Top 10 Greatest Horror Movies... EVER! #2 - The Texas Chain Saw Massacre

Of all the murderous slashers we've come to know, Leatherface may just represent the most perverse of them all. If the mask of human flesh isn't off-putting enough, the undertones of sexual depravity (or at least sexual ambiguity and confusion) make him that much more disturbing. And although he is just one amongst a family of killers, Leatherface's larger-than-life persona (delivered by Gunnar Hansen) is the most memorable of the film.

You cannot make a better film about people being hunted by people than this. It just seems too real. It seems effortless. A perfect storm of great villains blessed with wonderful victims. An absolute treasure of a horror film. It has stood the test of time, inspired legions and easily goes down as one of the best, most influential horror films ever.
