B-Sides: Little Witches Make it Rain

$

A commenter on IMDB describes Little Witches as being like an R-rated version of Britney Spears’ “Hit Me Baby One More Time” music video but with a horror twist. That’s not entirely inaccurate. Pretty young girls in Catholic schoolgirl uniforms dabble in the dark arts, causing all manner of death, demonic horror, and wanton sluttiness.

It would be very easy to dismiss Little Witches as a direct-to-video knock-off of The Craft because, well, it kind of was. But The Craft didn’t have naked Catholic schoolgirls summoning Satan or A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors’ bad girl Jennifer Rubin and Poltergeist mad munchkin Zelda Rubinstein as devout nuns or David Lynch regular Jack Nance as a doomed priest or a young Clea DuVall getting skewered by the horns of absolute evil.

For the most part, those that remember Little Witches remember it primarily for the T&A - if Seth MacFarlane ever hosts the Emmy Awards, he can mention current “CSI” co-star Sheeri Rappaport in the TV version of his “I Saw Your Boobs” song.

It’s also remembered for a pretty good and now fairly obscure rock song, “Who’s Going to Make It Rain?,” by a band I’m not familiar with, Mr. Jones and the Previous. (According to Wikipedia, Mr. Jones is Andras Jones, best known for playing Rick Johnson in A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master.) The song originally appeared on the 1993 album Mr. Jones and the Fascists in Search of the 100th Monkey (I would pay to see a movie with that title!) so it’s not a true B-Sides in the sense that it wasn’t actually composed for the film. Still, it's definitely B-Sides worthy.

Executive producers are J.R. Young, Nathan Kahane, Joseph Drake, and Peter Schlessel.

The Evil Dead has been rated R for “strong bloody violence and gore, some sexual content and language. Look for it in theatres on April 5th, 2013.

Bloody New App Arrives tor The Final Hours of Tomb Raider

Tomb Raider (review here) is now available for consoles, but did you know that you can also get an app for it? The app takes players even deeper into the darkness of what really went on behind the scenes during the game's development. You can't miss this!

From the Press Release
Crystal Dynamics, a Square Enix studio, announces the launch of The Final Hours of Tomb Raider app for iOS, Kindle Fire and Steam. The app is the culmination of a long collaboration between the studio and Geoff Keighley, which started with a documentary web series hosted by actor and gamer Zachary Levi; the first episode of five was launched back in July 2012.

Penned over several months, the app, The Final Hours of Tomb Raider, goes even further behind the scenes at Crystal during the final year of development, giving fans unprecedented perspective on development and highlighting the key creative forces responsible for reimagining the iconic video game franchise Tomb Raider.

"The Final Hours of Tomb Raider is a story about the reinvention of both a brand and a studio," said Geoff Keighley. "This franchise reboot was itself rebooted multiple times, and now, for the first time, the team at Crystal Dynamics shares with fans the early prototypes and concepts that didn't make it into the finished game."

“Geoff has managed to capture the essence of a story that no one outside of the studio has ever been exposed to,” said Karl Stewart, Global Brand Director of Crystal Dynamics. “In a very immersive and informative way, he has managed to bring to life the personal side of game development, something which is usually lost in the noise when bringing a game to fruition.”

Viewers can see how Crystal Dynamics managed the highs and lows of developing Tomb Raider. The Final Hours of Tomb Raider, priced at $2.99, is now available for iPad, PC and, for the first time, via a partnership with Amazon.com for Kindle Fire.

Make sure to check out the official Tomb Raider website to stay updated on all future game announcements.

The Walking Dead: Recap of Episode 3.13 - Arrow on the Doorpost

The Walking Dead: Recap of Episode 3.13 - Arrow on the DoorpostAfter last week's successful weapons run on "The Walking Dead", we know both groups are gearing for an epic all-out war. But before then, Rick and the Governor are trying to reach for a peace agreement.

This episode entitled "Arrow on the Doorpost" is written by Ryan C. Coleman and directed by David Boyd.

SPOILER ALERT: Do not read any further if you haven’t watched the episode yet. This is a recap with specific details from this episode. Continue only if you have already watched it.

Rick, Hershel and Daryl arrived in their car and on motorbike, respectively, at an abandoned farm, and after navigating through the farm with their weapons at hand, Rick and the Governor met face-to-face inside a barn at what looked like a pre-arranged meeting. "We have a lot to talk about," said the Governor while Rick just stared. At least Rick didn't aim his gun at the Governor like all his other interactions with strangers.

Actually, Rick did point his gun at the Governor after the opening credits, but the Governor volunteered to remove his weapon and sat at the table. Sneaky Governor had a gun taped to under the table!

Outside, Daryl scoped out the area on foot and met up with Hershel, right before Andrea, Milton and henchman Martinez drove up. Andrea joined Rick and the Governor inside. She was the one who arranged the meeting, but both men were still suspicious of each other. "We're here to move forward," said the Governor, smiling suspiciously. Wouldn't he have made a great slimy used car salesman if the zombie apocalypse didn't happen?

Back at the prison, the group was preparing for a firefight. Merle suggested a siege to kill the minimally-protected Governor since they have all that firepower. Of course, no one would agree to put Rick, Hershel and Daryl in a crossfire.

Andrea tried to preface that she knew both men as honorable, but the impatient Governor cut her off. Rick suggested that they draw a boundary at the river, with Woodbury taking the east side and the prison group taking the west. The Governor was amused. He was there only for Rick's surrender and got a rise out of Rick then. When Andrea tried to mediate, she was shushed and asked to leave, which she did dejectedly.

The Walking Dead: Recap of Episode 3.13 - Arrow on the Doorpost - Rick

Returning from commercial break, Rick, acting all lawyerly, conversed with the Governor about his responsibilities and Merle's actions. The Governor shot back with Rick's own mistakes and baby Judith. All of a sudden, the Governor announced that he had whiskey. Rick just looked incredulous.

Milton tried engage the folks outside in their own negotiations. He had recorded all their past encounters as history and Hershel appreciated the idea. Before Milton could show Hershel more, they heard some walker noises and Andrea, Daryl and henchman Martinez went to investigate. Before the two men could start one upping each other killing walkers in a funny bit, Andrea worked off her frustrations by dispatching one close with only a small knife. During their post killing smoking break, the two men shared their disappointed expectations that nothing would be resolved that day.

Meanwhile, Milton was fascinated by Hershel's leg amputation experience. They bonded over scientific experiment and Hershel's stump.

Back inside, the negotiations weren't moving along much. The Governor suggested that if they both follow their current path, total annihilation on both sides is imminent. The Governor even regaled Rick with a story of when he lost his wife, causing Rick to choke up and take a sip of his whiskey. Do you have a feeling that story wasn't real?

Back at the prison, Merle packed a bag of weapons and tried to go attack the Governor but Glenn refused to allow it. They ended in a scuffle with Maggie and Michonne joining in to try to subdue Merle. All of a sudden, Beth shot a gun in the air that ended the fight. Maybe now we can start seeing Beth fighting instead of singing?

Hershel tried to comfort Andrea, who just learned about Maggie's suffering at the hand of the Governor. While Andrea didn't want to return to Woodbury, if she chose the prison, she would've chosen a side.

Back at the stalemate, neither Rick nor the Governor would budge. The Governor, however, as he took off his eye-patch, revealed that he wanted only one thing that would end their deadlock: Michonne. Should we believe him?

Merle tried to convinced Michonne to join him on his assassination caper. He even had a call signal for Daryl ready from their hunting days. Even after laying out his plans, Michonne turned him down. Meanwhile, Maggie and Glenn found another private spot now that they have lost access to the watch tower.

The Walking Dead: Recap of Episode 3.13 - Arrow on the Doorpost - Daryl and zombie

The Governor gave Rick two days to consider his terms. If the Governor gets Michonne, Rick gets his river boundary plans. And with that, both parties left.

Back at Woodbury, the Governor sneakily directed his henchmen to prepare for a fight. Milton was surprised at his plan for a slaughter. All the while, the Governor openly lied to Andrea about his amicable terms negotiation with Rick.

Back at the prison, Rick told the group that they are going to war with Woodbury because the Governor wanted the prison. When Hershel confronted Rick alone later, Rick admitted that he had a choice - to give up Michonne - but he did not trust the Governor. Rick was also worried if fight was the right choice. Hershel suggested that Michonne had earned her place with the group. Rick was hoping that Hershel could talk him out of this.

Is the scene now set for an all-out war next? Will Andrea return to the group soon? Who else will we lose next (you know someone always bites it during battles)?

The film is edited by Steve Burgess and scored by composer Geoff Gesch. Tracy Willet (SNOW), Marcin Paluch (THE RETRIBUTION), Tom Martin (DOCTOR BELLO), Alyssa Kempenski (SADIE THE WEBSERIES) and Stephan Goldbach (SEE YOU NEXT TUESDAY) star.

Director Brendan Steere on Animosity: "I love movies with gobs of gore and blood, but this is just not that movie. I was thinking a lot about Ti West's films while making it. Argento's earlier giallo work. Alien and Rosemary's Baby – movies that creep and build. There's a palpable mystery and build that really I'm very happy with. I think we've really made something special, and I really hope the horror community responds to it."

Guest Blog: Celebrate Alfred Hitchcock Day with Stephen Rebello on 6 Great Reasons Why Hitchcock Is Still the Master of Suspense

$

Everyone celebrates President's Day, Valentine's Day, and the sort, but it's the cool kids who know that tomorrow, March 12th, is National Alfred Hitchcock Day!

Need a reminder why Alfred Hitchcock is still the legendary master of suspense? Read on!

Hitchcock, the recent film starring Sir Anthony Hopkins, was based on Stephen Rebello’s bestselling book, Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho. We asked Stephen to write something special for Hitchcock Day, and he came up with “6 Great Reasons Why Hitchcock Is Still the Master of Suspense.

6 Great Reasons Why Hitchcock Is Still the Master of Suspense

Psycho. Vertigo. North by Northwest. The Birds. If Alfred Hitchcock had directed nothing more than that astonishing quartet, he’d still be considered the maestro of creating nail-biting suspense, romantic intrigue, and unforgettable thrills. But that incredible run of movies, released in theaters from 1958 to 1963, represents only a drop in the bloody bucket of Hitchcock’s masterworks, which stretch back to the 1920s and extend into the 1970s. If you need a reminder of why Hitchcock rules as the all-time master of suspense, and why he is considered the man who pretty much wrote the book on the genre, here’s your quick cheat sheet.

1) Hitchcock Made Us Scream in the Shower

From Boston to Bangkok, Hitchcock stunned 1960 audiences by doing the unheard-of in Psycho: brutally killing-off the film’s sympathetic heroine— and biggest star—less than half way through the action. Taking his cue from the source novel by Robert Bloch, Hitchcock blasted our notions of safety and privacy by staging the landmark murder scene in, of all places, the bathroom, that tight, white space where one feels most relaxed and vulnerable. Or, at least, used to. And not only did he film Psycho in black and white to help minimize all that blood-letting, but he and editor George Tomasini also employed then-revolutionary rapid-fire editing techniques that suggested nudity and violence. To put the whole thing over the top, he cranked up a shrieking all-strings musical score by Bernard Herrmann. Voila, Hitchcock, his star Janet Leigh, and his merry band of gifted collaborators set a standard for heart-stopping terror that has yet to be topped—but is endlessly imitated.

2) Hitchcock Brought Menace Out into the Open

Dark alleys? Shifty-eyed villains with twirling moustaches? Graveyards? Rain-slicked cobblestone streets? Haunted houses, rattling chains, and bats in the belfry? Hitchcock considered these clichés ripe for parody and, beginning with his British films of the 1920s, the director shone a bright light on terror and dark deeds. With Hitchcock, thrills can even erupt during a kid’s birthday party, as happens in Young and Innocent and The Birds. The sophisticated, stylish heroes and heroine of The 39 Steps and North by Northwest get chased by planes in broad daylight and open spaces; in those same films, and such other movies as Blackmail, Saboteur, and Hitchcock’s two versions of The Man Who Knew Too Much, dramatic action unfolds against the backdrop of tourist attractions and national monuments like the United Nations, Mount Rushmore, the British Museum, the Statue of Liberty, Radio City Music Hall, and the Royal Albert Hall. When violence erupts in and around shower stalls, ski runs, telephone booths, attics, and mountain roads, the lesson is simple: There is nowhere to hide. Chaos and terror will find you, personified by the charming, attractive, and seductive villains of such Hitchcock thrillers as Shadow of a Doubt, Notorious, Stage Fright, Strangers on a Train, Psycho, Topaz, and Family Plot. Other films, from Charade right up through Batman and Mission: Impossible, have been following Hitchcock’s lead ever since.

3) Hitchcock Made Us Walk a Mile in His Heroes’ Shoes

Hitchcock often bragged to the press about how his films grabbed audiences by “making the viewer sweat” and “really putting them through it.” One of the most groundbreaking ways he put us through it was his frequent use of traveling point-of-view shots—that is, moving the camera in a way that places the viewer in the same position as the character on-screen. It’s a technique that makes us uneasy right along with James Stewart when we walk with him down ominous London streets in The Man Who Knew Too Much or when he obsessively stalks Kim Novak up and down hilly San Francisco in Vertigo. We’re jittery when we move slowly up the hill with Vera Miles in Psycho or when we glide along with her toward old Mrs. Bates sitting in a chair under a naked light bulb in a basement. And how about when we walk down a dock with Tippi Hedren, expecting her to be pecked by the birds, or when we hover with her outside the closed door of a room in which she is about to be engulfed by our feathered fiends? Hitchcock isn’t content with merely making us spectators. We’re full-on participants.

4) Hitchcock Tells His Audience More Than His Characters Know

Hitchcock and his screenwriters created some of the most dazzling moments in movie history by emphasizing agonizing suspense rather than simple, go-for-the-throat shock. The innocent little boy in Hitchcock’s ’30s thriller Sabotage thinks he’s carrying a harmless parcel through London; we know he’s carrying a bomb that is set to detonate at a certain time. In the Psycho shower scene, the audience is shown, through the opaque shower curtain, what Janet Leigh doesn’t see until it’s too late: the approaching shadow of a killer. Grace Kelly searches the empty apartment of a suspected wife killer in Rear Window while we, along with James Stewart, break into cold sweats watching the murderer make his way back home. The heroine of The Birds waits impatiently on a bench for a classroom of kids to be let out of school, unaware that flocks of malevolent birds are amassing slowly and silently behind her.

5) Hitchcock Kept Surprises As Surprises

It’s no exaggeration to credit Hitchcock with helping change the way we go to movies. Psycho was made back when the price of a movie ticket bought you a double feature, newsreel, short subjects, and trailers, and movie ticket buyers tended to pop in and out of theaters whenever they pleased. With Psycho, Hitchcock wanted to create an event. So, he refused to hold any pre release critics’ screenings, let alone a premiere. He forced movie-theater owners to sign contracts demanding zero tolerance of any moviegoer expecting to enter the theater once the film started. He launched the film’s release with a massive publicity campaign that stipulated in newspaper, radio, television ads, and posters in theater lobbies: “No one . . . but no one . . . will be admitted to the theater after the start of each performance of Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho.” He recorded announcements to broadcast on radio and through loudspeakers at theaters warning Psycho audiences not to reveal the ending to their friends. The public ate it up. They formed lines around the block, kept the movie’s secrets to themselves, and turned Psycho into a worldwide phenomenon. Can you imagine any of this happening in our era of wall-to-wall social media, instant gratification, and gleeful spoilers? Neither can we.

6) Hitchcock Revealed More by Showing Less

Hitchcock may be known best for cinematic suspense and thrills, but he was equally superb at finding suspense and thrills in eroticism. That long, long, long nuzzle and kiss between Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman in the ’40s spy thriller Notorious sizzles over six decades later. When gorgeous adventuress Grace Kelly slyly offers retired jewel thief Cary Grant his choice of leg or breast during a picnic above the French Riviera in To Catch a Thief, she’s offering a bit more than cold chicken. Sexy spy lady Eva Marie Saint seduces fugitive Cary Grant aboard a posh train, purring, “It’s going to be a long night . . . and I don’t particularly like the book I’ve started. You know what I mean?” Yeah, we do. And, without a bit of nudity or tawdry grappling, doesn’t Janet Leigh’s long lunch break tryst in a cheap hotel with boyfriend John Gavin in Psycho reek of backstreet eroticism? And the chilling spin Anthony Perkins as Psycho’s own Norman Bates puts on the line, “My mother and I were more than happy . . .” tells you more than you need to know about that relationship.
