Exclusive: Dread Central Chats with Hitchcock Director Sacha Gervasi

0
0

It seems rather coincidental that earlier this week Dread Central had the opportunity to speak with Hitchcock director Sacha Gervasi while we're in the midst of celebrating Indie Horror Month right now.

After all, Gervasi's latest project explores the Master of Suspense's personal and professional life while making Psycho- one of the most influential and successful independent horror movies of all time - and the UK-born filmmaker himself found much success on the festival circuit with his often moving and hilarious documentary Anvil: The Story of Anvil, which he produced independently back in 2008.

During our chat with Gervasi, we heard more about his involvement with Hitchcock and the parallels he found between himself and the legendary director's career paths. Gervasi also discussed the controversy of tackling such a well-known figure like Alfred Hitchcock, his upcoming project about "Fantasy Island" star Hervé Villechaize (Tattoo) with Peter Dinklage, and much more.

Exclusive: Dread Central Chats with Hitchcock Director Sacha Gervasi

Dread Central: Congrats on a great film- I really had a lot of fun with Hitchcock. How did you get attached to the project?

Sacha Gervasi:Oh, thank you; we really had a blast making the movie. And the project just sort of came to me; the script had been on black list but I didn’t really know the story behind Psycho so it was a bit shocking to me. I just found it fascinating that one of the greatest directors of his or any time that was coming off the massive success of a film like North by Northwest wasn't able to get someone to make Psycho with him so he was forced to take such a huge risk, risking all his money and his reputation just so he could feel passionate about making movies and telling stories like he used to when he made them on his own terms. He was also searching for relevancy and I found that fascinating as well.

What I also enjoyed about this story is that going in, you knew about his obvious brilliance and his huge ego or the neurotic side of him and the complex relationships he shared with actresses; but what most of us didn’t know was Alma's story and that was the thing that really surprised me the most because I knew of her existence but I had no idea really that she was his greatest collaborator throughout most of his career.

Dread Central: Between your work on Anvil and here on Hitchcock, it seems that you have a knack for exploring unconventional real-life characters- do you ever find any parallels between yourself and your subjects at all?

Sacha Gervasi:It's interesting that you mention this because most independent filmmakers start off their careers by having to finance their own projects, like I did with Anvil, and here was a highly successful and well-regarded director who pay for a brilliant movie like Psycho three decades into his career. And so I think because with Anvil I had paid for it myself, it gave me a small window of understanding into the types of challenges Alfred was facing professionally at that time. He had such spirit and passion for this movie and I understood where that came from.

Another reason why I wanted to make Hitchcock was to tell a story that no one really knew about one of the great personalities in the golden age of Hollywood but make it also about this fascinating, creative collaboration and relationship that existed between him and his wife. I think it’s connected to Anvil too because that was about a similar kind of creative collaboration so I would say there definitely were some similarities.

But ultimately the idea of working with Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren on this wonderful story was so compelling to me- we really had an amazing cast across the board but those two were magical together.

Dread Central: I thought the way you framed the story of Hitchcock was really playful, almost like we're watching an episode of "Alfred Hitchcock Presents"- can you discuss the decision to go in that approach rather than make a straight-up biopic?

Sacha Gervasi:You know, that was me wanting this movie to embrace the ironic and mischievous side of Hitchcock; I never wanted to make an earnest biopic at all. The whole point was to have some fun and also tell the story of the relationship between him and Alma. This was never going to be an academic exercise by any means, and I think some people weren't sure how to react because we didn't make the movie they were expecting.

Dread Central: In this movie, you're not only profiling one of the most revered directors of all time but also chronicling one of the greatest movies ever made- for a lot of directors that would have been a daunting challenge. Did you feel any sort of pressure at all while working on Hitchcock?

Sacha Gervasi:I didn't really feel any pressure- overwhelmed at times, sure, but no, I didn't really feel like I had to live up to any kind of expectations. Plus I was also confident in the story so I knew going in that Hitchcock was going to be different, which meant that people would either love it or hate it. Sure it's a controversial idea to tell this story in this manner but because of who Alfred was - being an intriguing and rich, compelling character - I knew I could have some fun with my approach. I almost had to make Hitchcock the way that I did because I think doing a straight biopic wouldn't have really played up the irony and mischief that was so much a part of his legacy as a filmmaker so I wanted to honor that.

Dread Central: I thought it was interesting that throughout Hitchcock we see Alfred really depending on different women in his life for very different needs, but ultimately it's Alma who really satisfies all those needs and does it very patiently. Can you talk about how you approached their relationship in the movie then?

Sacha Gervasi:I think the point of Hitchcock is that for directors and other creative types out there, there is always someone somewhere who is always listening to their crap, and there's no doubt that Alma really helped Alfred be an even better filmmaker than he was. If you’re someone like Alfred Hitchcock, there aren’t that many people around in the industry that you can trust.

Alma was someone who always told him the truth and also had a tremendous sense for what the audience wanted. Alma was also brilliant on script and was a terrific writer and editor too so I thought it was fascinating for us to tell that story and juxtapose it against Alfred making this film because it was the ultimate test for their relationship. That's why the focus of this story was less making Psycho and more about the relationship because the making of Psycho you can get in books and documentaries, but what you couldn’t find anywhere else is an exploration of Alfred and Alma's life together.

Dread Central: What's coming up next for you then?

Sacha Gervasi:A few things actually. Right now I'm working on a project with Peter Dinklage called My Dinner with Hervé, which is actually based on an actual interview I did with Hervé Villechaize, who played Tattoo on "Fantasy Island" in 1993, and a week later he committed suicide. I had the last interview with him, and so the movie is based on that experience so that's kind of a surreal next project for me.

Dread Central: It seems that as a storyteller you tend to gravitate towards exploring all these really fascinating real-life personalities between Anvil and Hitchcock or even The Terminal- is that something you've been conscious of all along?

Sacha Gervasi:Oh for sure. Pretty much everything I've done has had that real element of human drama to it. I'm fascinated by exotic real characters that also have a human side to them; those are the stories I love to watch and love to tell.

Sinister Cinema Launch Films
March 27, 2013 - John Dies At The End
In John Dies at the End, it's all about the soy sauce, a drug that promises an out-of-body experience. Users drift across time and dimensions. But some come back no longer human. Suddenly, a silent, otherworldly invasion is underway, and mankind needs a hero. What it gets instead are John (Rob Mayes) and David (Chase Williamson), a pair of college dropouts who can barely hold down jobs. Can they stop the oncoming horror in time to save humanity? No. No, they can't. Adapted from David Wong's audacious horror novel, John Dies at the End is written and directed by Don Coscarelli and also stars Clancy Brown, Glynn Turman and Paul Giamatti.

May 9, 2013 - The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh
The feature film directorial debut of Rue Morgue magazine founder and publisher, Rodrigo Gudiño, stars Aaron Poole and Academy Award winner Vanessa Redgrave. The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh tells the story of Leon, an antiques collector who inherits a house from his estranged mother, only to discover that she had been living in a shrine devoted to a mysterious cult.

May 30, 2013 - American Mary
From IndustryWorks Pictures comes one of the year's most horrific highlights. American Mary tells the story of broke med student Mary Mason (Katharine Isabelle) who grows increasingly disenchanted with medical school and the doctors she once admired. The allure of easy money sends a desperate Mary through the messy world of underground surgeries that leaves more marks on her than her so-called freakish clientele...Smart, sexy, funny and stunning to look at, American Mary features a standout lead performance from horror icon Katharine Isabelle (Ginger Snaps, Insomnia, Freddy vs. Jason), and notable performances by Antonio Cupo (Bomb Girls, Dark Angel, Elegy),Paula Lindberg (Fringe, Supernatural, "Iron Man" the TV series), David Lovgren ("Masters of Horror,""Supernatural,""Stargate: Atlantis’) and newcomers Tristan Risk as the disturbingly loveable Beatress and Twan Holliday as Mary's confidant, protector and bff, Lance. A film not to be missed and what and reviewers are calling 'a true modern day horror.’

June 19, 2013 - No One Lives
From Pathe and WWE Studios, fourteen students appear brutally murdered and the crime scene offers no clues as to the whereabouts of the one person who could be the only survivor, a young woman named Emma. Months later, bandits attack a young couple's car, only to discover the frightened Emma. Rubbing their hands at the prospect of ransom payday, they don’t realize that those who appeared to be prey are far less defenseless than they seem. Director Ryuhei Kitamura continues his American adventure with No One Lives, a violent and ingenious thriller, manipulating all the genre conventions past and future to his taste.

Indie Horror Month Exclusive: Michael Ling Discusses Upcoming Short Film Edward Lee's The Bighead

0
0

Dread Central recently hosted the online premiere of the brand new trailer for writer/director Michael Ling's upcoming short film Edward Lee's The Bighead, and with its LA premiere just a few weeks away, we thought now would be a great time to chat with Lee.

Based on Edward Lee's seminal and wildly controversial 2003 novel Edward Lee's The Bighead, this harrowing tale is set in the West Virginian backwoods where vicious monsters, both human and supernatural, go on a terrifying rampage in search of a special young woman. Their path of destruction uncovers long held secrets and puts the fate of the entire world in jeopardy.

The short film stars Raquel Cantu as the untamable sexpot Jerrica, Carrie Malabre as the shy Charity, Orson Chaplin as the demented psychopath Tritt "Balls" Connor, and Lance Trezona as Tritt's dim-witted accomplice Dicky. Award-winning director of photography Fady Hadid shot the film, and Geoff Skinner and Donald Wygal, Jr., produced.

Check out the highlights from our exclusive interview with Ling below!

Dread Central: So talk a bit about what got you into filmmaking and how you started in the industry.

Michael Ling:Well, like most folks my age, I got sucked into movies when my parents took us to see Star Wars. That just blew my mind as I had no idea there were movies like that out there. The next big step was my parents (or rather Santa if you can believe it) giving me The Psychotronic Encyclopedia of Film when I was around twelve. Now I had a giant book of cool movies to seek out which timed nicely with the video store boom. My friend Dennis and I would watch three or four movies a night, numerous times a week, and the video stores in our small Michigan town knew us by name and could barely keep up with our renting habits.

This lead to the two of us moving to LA for film school, which eventually lead to getting jobs as a PA and then advancing into different jobs on various movies.  In my spare time I always wrote scripts, and with the recent boom of sites like Kickstarter, after wrapping a long gig on John Carter, I decided enough was enough and now was the time to make our own movie.

Dread Central: What was it about Edward Lee's story that you felt was ripe for a cinematic adaptation?

Michael Ling:The Bighead was the second of my forays into 'extreme horror' (Jack Ketchum's Off Season was the first) and it blew me away with its originality. I didn't even know you could do that kind of stuff in books. Besides the crazy gore and sex, though, Lee had great characters that made for quite a page-turner.  I thought that level of nutso scenes and likable, well thought-out characters would make for a great movie and a movie that people hadn't seen before too.

Dread Central: So where did you guys shoot then and how long did production go for?

Michael Ling:We shot a couple days in Agua Dulce for all the exterior scenes. They have an amazing space with everything from a pond to woods to jungle-like settings out there. The bar scene was done at the Hideaway Bar in Sylmar. Both places were very generous to us and worked with our low budget. We shot for four days in total and managed to squeeze everything (big thanks to our co-producer Greg Guzik for keeping us on a tight schedule).

Dread Central: Any surprises along the way?

Michael Ling:I'd say the biggest 'surprise' we had was having to change out one of our leading ladies on the fly. We had a slight 'name' cast as Jerrica, and the day of the shoot she didn't show. We later found out she was sick, but for a few hours we were on location with a limited time at the bar and more than a little stressed. Luckily for us Raquel Cantu, our script supervisor, was really an actress just doing this as a favor to a friend. We managed to talk her into taking on the role and she nailed it. It turns out we were much better off with her playing Jerrica and sorry we never cast her in the first place; I will never be able to thank her enough.

Dread Central: I noticed this is a very monster-heavy story- can you talk about the special effects process and what went into the design work? Did Lee's story inspire all the designs or did you get to give some input as well?

Michael Ling:Our Bighead was brought to life thanks to Mark Villalobos at Monster Effects. We had a start of what he needed to look like based on the book, of course, but that was always a bit vague so we could really let Mark do his thing. I got to visit his studio and go over designs with him, which was amazing as I've always loved make up and effects. As a kid that grew up reading Famous Monsters and Fangoria, this was a dream come true.  Mark really kicked ass for us though and made a creature that stands (deformed) head to head - and mutated body - with the best of them.

Dread Central: Tell us more about your cast and what they brought to the table for their respective characters.

Michael Ling:Just like our amazing crew, our cast was outstanding too. I was worried that being a low budget flick meant that we would have to 'settle' for whoever auditioned that didn't suck too badly but that was so not the case. Since we were going to be doing this on the quick, we wanted good actors but also people that we wanted to hang around with that wouldn't have egos.

Orson Chaplin really nails the twisted psychopath, Balls, and I think people will be talking about him after they see the movie (and probably be scared to talk to him as well).  Casting Charity was tricky as we wanted someone that could pull off the shy and mousy bits of the character but not get lost on screen; Carrie Malabre was perfect for that and we were lucky to get her.

I've already mentioned how great Raquel was in bringing Jerrica to life, but really everyone just brought their 'A' game to set as we didn't have time to do numerous takes on every scene.

Dread Central: I noticed this is something that you're also hoping to adapt into a feature; was it hard determining what aspects of the story to show for the short and which ones you'd have to keep for the feature?

Michael Ling:Producer Geoff Skinner has been working with me for a few years in trying to shop this around Hollywood and helped me choose the best bits for the short.  I would have LOVED to have Jesus (via Tom's visions) in there and cannot wait to cast him for the feature version.

It was tricky trying to introduce all the key characters and still tell a fairly brief stand-alone story, that's for sure. I liken this to a TV pilot where it can stand by itself as a short film but there is also a hint of much bigger story that we could tell.  Hopefully people are going to want to see more of what is happening in Luntville with all these great characters.

So first and foremost we are actively seeking funding to get the feature made. We have the script and a budget ready; now we just need the money.  There has been some interest from financial backers already, which is very encouraging. I hope once people see the short they will be impressed with the quality and enticed by the earning potential to give us a shot with a low budget; of course, if someone wants to fork over Avatar-type cash for us, we would be okay with that too (laughs).

So for the immediate future, I am just focusing on The Bighead and getting the feature version prepped (and made). Down the road I have a couple of other scripts we have been shopping around, and Large Melon is eager to adapt a few more of Edward Lee's books too.

Edward Lee's The Bighead will premiere in Los Angeles on Saturday, March 30, 2013, at 7:00 PM at the Acme Theater in Hollywood (135 N. La Brea Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90036). Check out the trailer below, and keep your eyes peeled on the short film's Facebook page for news on upcoming screenings and more!

Godsmacked! Rocker Sully Erna to Make Cinematic Debut in Woodhaven Films' Army of the Damned"Keep Away,""I Stand Alone,""Cryin' Like a Bitch"... sounds like a description of Doctor Gash's high school years. Actually these are few kick-ass Godsmack songs, and lead singer Sully Erna has been named to the cast of Woodhaven Pictures' upcoming Army of the Damned.

This will be Erna's feature film acting debut, and he will be joined by a delightfully diverse cast. Producer Chad A. Verdi has also announced that horror legend Michael Berryman, entertainer Joey Fatone, professional wrestlers turned actors Tommy Dreamer and Thea Trinidad, as well as a man who knows a little something about scaring people himself, Nick Principe, have been added to the cast. Jackie Moore and Tom Paolino round out the list of players. The film will be directed by Tom DeNucci and begin filming in April with additional cast members yet to be announced.

Synopsis
Army of the Damned tells the story of a hit reality TV show film crew following a group of local cops in a sleepy town. Things go horribly wrong for the cops (played by Dreamer, Trinidad, Erna and Paolino) and the camera crew (played by Fatone and Moore) when they respond to a call that brings a whole new meaning to the term "domestic disturbance." Faced with life and death situations, these officers are forced to throw the rule book out in order to stay alive. With the help of a reclusive hermit (Berryman) and a petty criminal (Principe), the lawmen do all they can to serve, protect and avoid joining the Army of the Damned.

Cult Season 1Has it really been just three episodes of "Cult" that have aired so far? It seems like at least a few more, which isn't necessarily a good thing, but if you're still digging the show-within-the-show concept, check out a Producer's Preview of Episode 1.04, "Get With the Program."

In this sneak peek "Cult" creator Rockne S. O'Bannon talks about the enforcer Terrence Ross and his relationship with Jeff and Skye.

"Cult" Episode 1.04 - "Get with the Program" (airs 3/15/13, 9-10 pm)
THE NOTEBOOK — Jeff (Matt Davis) tells Skye (Jessica Lucas) about Ama (guest star Neelam Khabra), a woman he met on a “Cult” fan site who claims that her husband is missing after becoming obsessed with the show. When they finally meet her, Jeff notices that she has a “Cult” notebook that looks eerily like Nate’s notebook.

Ama introduces Jeff and Skye to a man who finds and deprograms cult members. EJ (guest star Stacey Farber, “Degrassi: The Next Generation”) locates an IP address on a disk that could bring Jeff and Skye one step closer to finding Nate.

Meanwhile, on the television show, Kelly (Alona Tal) finds Professor Patrick (guest star Jonathan Holmes), the man who deprogrammed her, at Billy’s (Robert Knepper) compound.

Rob Hardy directed the episode written by Craig Gore and Tim Walsh.
