Indie Horror Month Exclusive: Ryan Spindell Gets to The Root of the Problem with Dread Central

$

0

Just a few weeks ago at the CineMayhem Film Fest, this writer had the pleasure of screening indie filmmaker Ryan Spindell's latest horror comedy short, The Root of the Problem, which hilariously taps into everyone's inherent fears of the dentist.

The film, set in a 1950's candy colored world, hearkens back to old school Tim Burton films like Ed Wood and Edward Scissorhands.

Co-written by Spindell and Mark E. Davidson, The Root of the Problem follows a nervous housewife (Alison Gallaher) who begins to suspect her dentist (Ptolemy Slocum) has a far more sinister agenda than just drilling cavities and pulling teeth.

Last week it was announced that The Root of the Problem would soon be heading to the East Coast as an official selection of the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival as part of its stellar shorts programming slate, and to mark the occasion, Dread Central recently chatted with Spindell about his latest short film project and much more for Indie Horror Month.

Indie Horror Month Exclusive: Ryan Spindell Gets to The Root of the Problem with Dread Central

Dread Central: Can you talk about what inspired your story for The Root of the Problem (and for the record, I've always found dentists inherently creepy myself) and setting it in the 1950's, which really added a nice sense of surreality to everything?

Ryan Spindell:The original inspiration for the film came from a short writing exercise my co-writer Mark Davidson had done as an experiment to see if he could tell a complete story in five pages. What he ended up with was an awesome character study that relies on a subtle building tension that slowly gets under the readers' skin. I was especially impressed by the dentist character who was both charming and creepy as hell. Plus, everyone is at least a little freaked out by dentists.

As for the period setting, I’ve always had a soft spot for the Norman Rockwell aesthetics of the 1950s and felt that embracing that classic "Twilight Zone" aesthetic would put a unique spin on this pulpy little story.

Dread Central: I thought both Alison and Ptolemy were great in this- what was your casting process and what was it about both of them that made them perfect for this story?

Ryan Spindell:You know, I couldn’t be happier with all the performances in the film. I tend to gravitate toward material that’s tonally a bit on the weird side so casting is of the utmost importance. Without strong performances, the whole project would fall apart like a house of cards. I like to start the casting process with an actor who brings something interesting to the table and then build the role specifically for that person. It’s sort of a backwards way of doing things, but I find the results are always more interesting than my initial conceit.

Dread Central: So where did you guys shoot?

Ryan Spindell:We shot the entire film in my friend’s warehouse downtown. Unfortunately we didn’t have the money we needed to afford a great location here in LA, so I opted to build the set myself. I found most of the flats and building materials for free on Craigslist and just sort of Frankensteined it all together. It ended up being a much bigger job than I anticipated and I nearly died at least three times but the learning experience was amazing.

We did have plenty of difficulties along the way but to me, it often seems like filmmaking is little more than a string of problems but it’s how you deal with those problems that defines you as a filmmaker.

So naturally, I curled up in a ball and cried like a baby.

Indie Horror Month Exclusive: Ryan Spindell Gets to The Root of the Problem with Dread Central

Dread Central: I loved the color palette you used in this- can you discuss the visual style you were going for in Root?

Ryan Spindell:Visually, we wanted to do something unique with this film. Yes, it’s a horror film, but there’s also a good dose of fantasy and dark humor throughout and we wanted to have fun with it. One of the biggest benefits of building the set and all the props myself was that I had complete control over the color palette. I chose to embrace bold, primary colors to emphasize that candy-coated aesthetic of the 1950's- the Coca-Cola 1950s that only exists in our minds eye.

I grew up idolizing hyper-visual filmmakers like Terry Gilliam, Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Peter Jackson, and I think you can see traces of those filmmakers in everything I do (at least that’s my intention).

Dread Central: I thought Dr. Clayton's story about the tooth fairy was great, both in content and in delivery; how much of that was based in actual folklore?

Ryan Spindell:I did a bunch of research on the mythology behind the tooth fairy expecting to discover some cool gothic folklore, but for the most part it was all pretty banal. At the end of the day I just made up my own mythology, which ultimately was a lot more fun.

I’m not saying that this should become the go-to mythology…but this should become the go-to mythology.

Dread Central: Have you thought about adapting this into a feature if the opportunity came along?

Ryan Spindell:Haha! I wish I had the business savvy to make this short as a sales tool for a larger project. The reality is, I made it just because I love making horror shorts. I look forward to the day when making short films proves to be both creatively and financially profitable but until then, I’ll continue fighting the good fight.

That being said, you should all invest in The Root of the Problem, The Feature: Mary, a reluctant young housewife uncovers a conspiracy older then time itself that propels her deep into the twisted underground world of missing teeth and the Bone Grue.

Dread Central: What's coming up for you? Any new projects on the horizon?

Ryan Spindell:I have all sorts of exciting coals in the fire. (Can coals be exciting?) The project I’m focusing most of my energy on now is a feature called The Mortuary Collection. It’s an old-school horror anthology film that pays homage to all the weird and wonderful films I grew up with. With a little luck we’ll start shooting this fall.

Beyond that I’m working on a new short film, a horror musical series and a super bloody creature feature; I'm really looking forward to 2013.

Biff and his buddies are keen to take Sam to the old abandoned amusement park to make him prove his courage as part of their initiation ceremony. They involve Jenny in their cruel game as the grand prize of the competition. Sam accepts the challenge, but the girl wouldn’t let him go in by himself; she follows him into the amusement park and a night they’ll never forget.

Alrighty, kids, time for a trailer for the latest indie horror flick on its way from the Great White North, The Ghost Is a Lie, which happens to be an Indiegogo success story. Check it out, eh? If only for Bob and Doug McKenzie and their strange brew.

Jason Armstrong directs, and Christina Aceto, Christina Schimmel, Lindsay Smith, Chris Carnel, Jake Raymond, Colin Price, Rich Piatkowski, Gene Abella, Rachel Sellan, and Alex Smith star.

Synopsis
Hoping to cash in on the final stages of the found-footage phenomenon, a shady LA producer hires a small crew of cult-icon, has-been, and never-were filmmakers to 'whip up' a supernatural, first-person perspective ghost story on a pitifully low budget. Along with a handful of amateur actors, the group heads into the woods and sets about rigging up 'scares' and planning the story with varying degrees of enthusiasm.

After filming the first gag, the actors return to base camp to find the crew has been brutally murdered. MOST of the crew, anyway...

Now the actors are lost far from home and being hunted by a vicious killer with an eye for cinema.

The new anthology film 9-9-81 was released in Thailand last February, and given its success, it's getting distro in many other countries. That being said, a new English subtitled trailer has hit the interwebs, and we have it for you here.

Each story (of course) was based upon "true events" so here's hoping that something deliciously dark is on its way. Rapeepimol Chaiyasena directs, and Patitta Attayatamavitaya, Supachai Girdsuwan, and Setsit Limkasitdej star.

Synopsis
One morning a beautiful lady, Wipawee, wearing her white bridal gown jumped from the 20th floor of an apartment building. The motivation of her suicide is still questioned and mysterious. It is not an ordinary suicide. There may be something behind the incident. It may involve bad spirits, black magic or Thai beliefs. More than anything, this incident is related to 9 other accidents. Her death could be related to either the man staying on the other side who has fallen in love with her, the maid, her close friend, the teenager who steals her belongings, father and mother, investigation police officer, new tenant, and her boyfriend. All 9 incidents are told by 12 directors and will reveal the mysterious truth.

The Selection Casts a New Character Who Doesn't Appear in the Book

Ben Aldridge - The Selection Casts a New Character Who Doesn't Appear in the BookMore casting news has come in for The CW's pilot "The Selection," and it sounds like they are diverging from the source material a bit by adding an entirely new character. Read on for the details.

Deadline broke the news that British actor Ben Aldridge ("Lark Rise to Candleford,""The Bible") will play Prince Rafe, the younger brother of Prince Maxon (Michael Malarkey), who loves his country and takes his leadership role seriously — but has a secret. What's interesting is that, as MTV pointed out, in Kiera Cass' dystopian novel, upon which the potential series is based, Prince Maxon is an only child.

"The Selection" is set 300 years in the future and is about 35 working-class young women who are chosen via a lottery to participate in a competition for the Royal Prince Maxon's hand in marriage, which would make the winner the new queen, all while a growing rebellion threatens to crush the crown.

The pilot was (re)written by Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain; Warner Brothers is producing.

Starz Unveils its Official Premiere Trailer for Da Vinci's Demons

We're pretty excited to check out what David Goyer has created in "Da Vinci's Demons," so much so that we'll be adding the Starz network to our channel lineup in time for the show's April 12th premiere. Check out the new trailer, and let us know if you'll be doing the same.

While the da Vinci depicted in the history books was renowned for his works of art and inventions that included the calculator, army tank, diving suit, solar power, and many more, “Da Vinci’s Demon’s” depicts a 25-year-old da Vinci (portrayed by Tom Riley, Return to House on Haunted Hill, "Bedlam") on the cusp of greatness, with intellect and talents that are almost superhuman. In the series he struggles to live within the confines of his own reality and time, tortured by his unsurpassed intellect. He begins to not only see the future, but invent it.

The series also stars Laura Haddock (“Honest,” Captain America: The First Avenger), who plays the celebrated beauty with obscure motives, Lucrezia Donati; Elliot Cowan (“Marchlands,” “The Fixer,” “Lost in Austen”), who plays the shrewd de facto ruler of Florence, Lorenzo Medici; Lara Pulver (“True Blood,” “Sherlock,” “Robin Hood”), who plays his wife, Clarice Orsini; and Blake Ritson (RocknRolla, Titus, “World Without End”) as Pope Sixtus’ ruthless bastard son, Count Riario.

David S. Goyer, known for co-writing The Dark Knight trilogy, the upcoming Man of Steel, and serving as story editor for Call of Duty: Black Ops and Black Ops II, the most successful video game franchise of all time, also served as showrunner on “Da Vinci’s Demons” and directed the first two episodes.

After its premiere on Friday, April 12th, at 10pm ET/PT, following the finale of “Spartacus: War of the Damned,” “Da Vinci’s Demons” will air Friday nights at 9pm ET/PT on Starz.

Synopsis:
In a world where thought and faith are controlled, one man fights to set knowledge free.

The secret history of Leonardo da Vinci's tantalizing life reveals a portrait of a young man tortured by a gift of superhuman genius. He is a heretic intent on exposing the lies of religion. An insurgent seeking to subvert an elitist society. A bastard son who yearns for legitimacy with his father.

He finds himself in the midst of a storm that has been brewing for centuries. A conflict between truth and lies, religion and reason, past and future. His aspirations are used against him by the opposing forces of the time—luring him into a game of seduction where those who despise his intellect need him most. Leonardo must take up the fight against foes who use history to suppress the truth. A hero armed only with genius, da Vinci stands alone against the darkness within, and the darkness without.

Facing an uncertain future, his quest for knowledge nearly becomes his undoing as he explores the fringes of his own sanity. Da Vinci throws himself into his genius and emerges as an unstoppable force that lifts an entire era out of darkness and propels it into light. His story becomes a mirror into our own world, calling us all to join his fight to Free the Future.

The latest indie horror anthology Sinister Visions will be on its way to home video this fall, and we've got the (heavily Photoshopped) artwork for you and more right here. Check it out, and look for more on this one very soon!

From the Press Release:
Horror anthology SINISTER VISIONS is making its way out to the world as we speak – cinematic showings are planned during the summer in the UK, Italy, and Spain; and a DVD release for the North American market is planned for early autumn. The cover art has just been revealed.

About SINISTER VISIONS:
Are you ready for a terror attack combining both succubi, women possessed by demons, serial killers in electric chairs, aggressive zombies, vengeful crazy women, men with very deep emotional scars, and of course a fair amount of amputation and gore? SINISTER VISIONS consists of five grueling horror stories to make your bones freeze.

SUCCUBUS is about a beautiful young blonde, Emma, studying to become an archeologist. On an excavation trip to Syria she finds something in the sand that is about to change her life completely. She hurries home, hoping to be able to escape it, but she is about to get wiser.

MY UNDEAD GIRLFRIEND is a twisted story with a lot of morbid, dark humor, telling the story of the day Keith woke up next to his girlfriend, who had out of the blue turned into a flesh-eating undead; and tonight he is about to meet her parents for the first time. This day is going to be a bit out of the ordinary!

MOTHER KNOWS BEST is a story about Carl, a somewhat shy man preparing for a date with his childhood sweetheart, Rebecca. Carl’s mother has quite a few objections about the date, and she is not too shy to express them.

In A WOMAN SCORNED we meet Gail, who's been tied to a bed by Holly. Gail had the nerve to start a relationship with Richard, who unfortunately is Holly’s former husband – and Gail does not approve at all!

Finally, GENITAL GENOCIDE presents us to serial killer Charles Albert Harris, who, sitting on death row waiting for the switch to be turned on, takes us through his crimes while the audience of the courtroom listens. Harris wants a last reaction out of the audience that consists of many relatives of his victims – and a reaction he gets.

SINISTER VISIONS is a collaboration among filmmakers from the USA, UK, Sweden, and Denmark and features works from skilled writers such as Garry Charles, Stefan Bommelin, Henric Brandt, Rasmus Tirzitis, Cody Cather, Doug Gehl and Lars Egholm Fischmann while the directing has been in the capable hands of Henric Brandt, Doug Gehl, and Kim Sønderholm.

Starring: Kim Sønderholm, David C. Hayes, Michael Harrelson, Debbie Overbey, Rob Douglas, Rick Dyer, Daren Palacio, Bart Overbey, Brian Weir, Liana Hubbard, Tori Montgomery, Pamela Ricardo, Peg Thon, Kat Herlo, Miriam Yeager, Nadia Bond, Lars Bjarke, Ralf Beck, Pontus Olgrim, Camilla Löjdström, Andreas Rylander, Stefan Jonasson, Babs Brinklund, Mehrnaz Bagheri Beiknejad, Mette Løvendahl, Toke Lars Bjarke, Nadine, and many, many others.
