SXSW 2013 Exclusive Video: Dread Central Chats with Bruce Campbell, Fede Alvarez and Rob Tapert for Evil DeadWhile at the 2013 SXSW Film Festival, Dread Central had the opportunity to sit down and chat exclusively with three of the creative minds behind the brand new Evil Dead reboot, producers Bruce Campbell and Robert Tapert as well as co-writer/director Fede Alvarez.

Also co-written by Rodo Sayagues, this incarnation of Evil Dead stars Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Jessica Lucas and Elizabeth Blackmore as a group of friends who head off to a remote cabin in order to help one of them kick her drug habit. Of course when they arrive, they discover a mysterious book waiting for them that unleashes an unholy force that won't stop until they're all dead.

During our exclusive interview with Campbell, Alvarez and Tapert, we heard more about this latest chapter in the Evil Dead saga and why everyone involved wanted to utilize a brand-new cast of characters for this installment instead of using some of the franchise's more iconic characters. Campbell also discussed the enduring legacy of the original film some 34 years after shooting it with Sam Raimi and what they'll have to do to raise the stakes on Evil Dead 2 now that it's been announced.

Read our Evil Dead review here!

Check out our exclusive video interview below, and look for Evil Dead once it arrives in theaters on April 5th!

Ghost House Pictures is producing the much anticipated remake of The Evil Dead, the film that effectively launched the careers of Sam Raimi (Spider-Man franchise, Darkman, Drag Me to Hell), Rob Tapert (30 Days of Night), and Bruce Campbell, who played the Ash character and was co-producer of the original. They are now back to produce an Evil Dead for today's audience that's high on the horror, gore, plot twists, and more from a screenplay written by Fede Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues with Diablo Cody. Executive producers are J.R. Young, Nathan Kahane, Joseph Drake, and Peter Schlessel.

The Evil Dead has been rated R for “strong bloody violence and gore, some sexual content and language. Look for it in theatres on April 5th, 2013.

Related Story:Everything About the Evil Dead Remake

A core cast of young, fresh talent includes Jane Levy ("Suburgatory") as Mia; Shiloh Fernandez (Deadgirl, Red Riding Hood) as David; Lou Taylor Pucci (Carriers) as Eric; Jessica Lucas (Cloverfield) as Olivia; and Elizabeth Blackmore (Legend of the Seeker) as Natalie.

Synopsis
In the much anticipated remake of the 1981 cult-hit horror film, five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin. When they discover a Book of the Dead, they unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.

Indie Horror Month Exclusive: Dread Central Chats with Sanitarium Directing Trio - Kerry Valderrama, Bryan Ortiz and Bryan Ramirez

Indie Horror Month Exclusive: Dread Central Chats with Sanitarium Directing Trio- Kerry Valderrama, Bryan Ortiz and Bryan RamirezEarlier this month the psychological horror anthology Sanitarium premiered during the Miami International Film Festival.

Directed by Bryan Ramirez, Kerry Valderrama and Bryan Ortiz, Sanitarium consists of three segments based on the particular patients of a mental institution that's being overseen by the sinister Dr. Stenson (Malcolm McDowell), who acts as the navigator through each chilling story.

With elements from "The Twilight Zone,""Alfred Hitchcock Presents,""Creepshow," and "Tales from the Crypt,"Sanitarium explores the different narratives of the insane patients and the tales which led to their crazed states of minds. These accounts reflect hallucinations, imaginary voices and altered realities and include themes of the paranormal, the unexplainable and the mystical.

Sanitarium also stars Robert Englund, John Glover, Lou Diamond Phillips, Lacey Chabert, Chris Mulkey and David Mazouz. Recently Dread Central chatted with the directing trio behind the film for Indie Horror Month, who touch upon what inspired them to team up for the anthology, their experiences working on the project and much more.

Dread Central: Can you start off by talking about how you got involved in the project? I noticed a few of you were credited as writers on Sanitarium too- did the story come first or the idea to make a movie together?

Bryan Ramirez:Kerry, Ortiz and I have known each other for many years. I was working on Mission Park and Kerry came to me with a crazy idea of making a three-part film about an insane asylum starring Malcolm McDowell. Obviously I loved the idea and we met a few times about the stories and cast, and once I wrapped up on my last project called Mission Park, Kerry had everything ready to go.

Kerry Valderrama:I created the project two years ago and co-wrote two out of the three segments ("Figuratively Speaking" and "Up To the Last Man") with my writing partner, C. M. Bratton. I then brought on both Bryan Ortiz and Bryan Ramirez to help me make it into a feature and we all worked together to make it happen in San Antonio, Texas.

Bryan Ortiz:Kerry Valderrama came to me two years ago with an idea to do an anthology film. The film was to take place in a sanitarium and we would each have a story to tell. I like the idea because it reminded me of the 1973 classic film Tales that Witness Madness as well as the 1989 series "Tales from the Crypt." I immediately jumped on board in excitement; I would get to direct and create a film with my close friends? YES!

The idea to make a movie and the story came at the same time. Kerry had the idea to create short stories, by three different directors, that would create a film. Kerry gave us the guidelines to follow, which were for each story to start and end in the hospital. From that we were asked to submit several log lines for story ideas. We all read our log lines and decided which stories would make it into the film.

Dread Central: What was it about doing an anthology that appealed to you as a storyteller? Was there a particular reason for using a mental hospital as the setting?

Kerry Valderrama:I've always wanted to do a re-vamp of what I consider classic storytelling and using the older shows like "Twilight Zone" and "Alfred Hitchcock Presents". It seemed to me that having Malcolm as your presenter and then following each patient into what led them to insanity within the sanitarium could potentially result in having a multitude of stories in the future.

Bryan Ortiz:One of the greatest advantages to an anthology is the ability to tell so many stories at one time. In our case, three different stories with three distinct styles all connected by the hospital. This allows the audience to enjoy a variety of film flavors all in one sitting. There is such joy in getting to experience all that a film has to offer, and then being able to experience three times that really heightens that experience. It gave me the chance as a storyteller to tell a strong high impact story in a short time frame. That was one of the most exciting challenges for me.

I come from a short film background so getting to tell my story with a larger cast and crew in a short film narrative couldn't have made me happier. The challenges of fitting so much into such a small time is really scary and exciting as a writer and that's when I feel I become more creative. And a mental hospital allowed us the ability to create a multitude of storylines for not only this film but for future films as well. It also gave us the ability to tell individual stories and tie them all together.

Bryan Ramirez:I love that we all have different stories to tell, while keeping a connection to a sad, pain-ridden hospital that people can never leave. We're able to take you into the world of these three characters and show you why they are there, how, and what they may have done to be confined to such a future. At the same time, we have three completely different stories that can be enjoyed by different people.

Dread Central: Was the creative process any different for you on Sanitarium than on a traditionally structured feature since here you're telling your own story but you have to make sure it works well as a companion to the other stories being told as well?

Kerry Valderrama:We were very fortunate that the majority of each segment takes place outside the sanitarium so that we could treat each segment as if it were its own feature. The one location that we had to make sure matched the other three segments was the sanitarium.

Dread Central: For our readers who may not be aware of this project, can you discuss the idea of Sanitarium and give us a sense of what we can expect from the stories?

Bryan Ortiz:Sanitarium is a thrilling anthology film that tells the story of several patients and how they ended up at the Sanitarium under the care of Dr. Stenson. Each story will dive into the sad story of each patient and the horrors that plague their life, the demons that brought them to the home of Dr. Stenson.

Dread Central: Can you talk about the cast you assembled and their respective roles- you've also got a few of my own personal favorites in this like John Glover and Robert Englund so I'd love to hear more on what you've cooked up for them in Sanitarium.

Kerry Valderrama:In my personal segment Lou Diamond Phillips plays the role of a Mayan professor named James Silo. He is a conspiracy theorist who locks himself inside a bunker only to find out that he might not be alone. Lou was a pleasure to work with and his performance was magnificent. I believe he will keep the audience on the edge of their seats until the very end.

Bryan Ramirez:In my segment John Glover plays Gustav Spieler, an eccentric miniature figure artist whose only happiness lies in the world he has created. Robert Englund plays Sam, his super-agent and curator whose only happiness is trying to make Gustav the star he knows he deserves to be. When Gustav's assistant Mateo (Walter Perez) and Sam curate an extravagant exhibit that can make them millions, the pressure pushes Gustav over the edge, causing the world he created to become his reality. The outcome... well, you'll just have to see the film to find out.

Bryan Ortiz:My segment of Sanitarium consisted of the very talented David Mazouz, veteran actor Chris Mulkey and the ever beautiful and talented Lacey Chabert. They do an amazing job at not only tackling a very difficult social subject matter but also creating the world around David, who plays our patient in the hospital.

Dread Central: How were your production experiences? Did you guys all shoot your segments separately?

Bryan Ramirez:We each shot our segments in five days, one after one another, and then ending with the hospital in its entirety. Bryan Ortiz kicked it off, I followed and then Kerry wrapped it up. We really have to recognize our producers Remy Carter, Kerry and Amanda Rubio- with our films overlapping pre-production of one during the others' production week, they really helped make our production a success.

Bryan Ortiz:For me, the production experiences were intense yet exciting; we only had five days to film each segment so we had to move very fast. It's scary when you have such little time to shoot so much story, but that is when creativity really kicks in. We had an amazing team that really pulled it all together. The experience was like nothing I have ever had. I had the chance to not only work with some of the best crew in Texas but with some of my favorite actors in the industry. We shot the segments separately, but while one was shot, the others were in pre-production. That allowed us to stack the projects on top of each other and have the film done on time.

Dread Central: Congrats on the premiere at MIFF- what's coming up next for Sanitarium then?

Kerry Valderrama:We are currently in negotiations with several different domestic distribution companies and should be announcing Sanitarium's release date by next month. We are also currently in development for Sanitarium the Series, which will be in production by the fall.

Exclusive: Glenn Gamble Discusses The Walking Dead Survival Instinct

Exclusive: Glenn Gamble Discusses The Walking Dead Survival InstinctThe Walking Dead Survival Instinct will release on March 19th for the Xbox 360, PS3, PC and Wii U. We recently had the opportunity to chat with the game's Principal FX Artist and System Designer, Glenn Gamble. Read on to learn what zombie madness lurks ahead for Daryl and Merle Dixon!

AMANDA DYAR:The Walking Dead Survival Instinct release is right around the corner. Fans will get to explore more of Merle and Daryl's relationship in the game. How will having two brothers as the main characters affect gameplay as opposed to starting out with a group of random strangers (as seen in Telltale's game series)?

GLENN GAMBLE:Who said you are starting out in a group of random strangers or with Merle? The characters you start the game with are new to fans but well known to Daryl. These are the first days of the apocalypse so you will get to see how those people survive in this strange new world: adapt fast or die.

As for Merle, exploring a relationship with him is a nice way of putting it. If you watch the show, you know he is more of a force of nature. You either get out of his way or you get hurt. Merle is the type that does better in this kind of world since it allows him more freedoms to capitalize on his particular skills – most of which society normally doesn't approve.

Now, if it sounds like I am hedging a little here with details, that’s a fair accusation. We both know that a big part of what makes The Walking Dead universe so awesome is the story. I don't want to ruin it for anyone. We had two talented writers (one from the game industry and the other from television) write the script, and it has some really stellar moments. My personal favorite part is Merle’s favorite chair. I have said too much already. No more spoilers; my lips are sealed.

Exclusive: Glenn Gamble Discusses The Walking Dead Survival Instinct

AMANDA:The Walking Dead Survival Instinct focuses more on survival than shooting. How will this be emphasized throughout the game, and how much can players interact with the elements in their environment? Basically, will players be able to interact with anything they come across or just those that are important to the gameplay?

GLENN:We tried to streamline everything across the board, so the player can focus more on playing the game and less about the micromanagement associated with survival. Though collecting some resources and items is vital, we didn't want to make that a tedious chore. The decisions the player makes are on a group level when it comes to their survivors. In the game, there are glass bottles that can be thrown for a distraction and they are distinctive for that reason. This way a player can target in on them instead of having to dig through a pile of trash. Since things can go from bad to "Oh God, Oh God, we are all going to die" very quickly, this can allow for fast strategic improvisation from the player, which can mean the difference between life and death.

AMANDA: With the popularity of "The Walking Dead" TV series, I foresee a lot of first-time gamers coming out to play The Walking Dead Survival Instinct. How much of the television show is carried over into the game and will any unanswered questions from the show be answered in the game?

GLENN:Hopefully we carried everything over from the AMC "Walking Dead" series. We have their sound and music, with a lot of new materials as well. We copied the show's desaturated color palettes and hot whites. Norman Reedus and Michael Rooker were even gracious enough to bring their immeasurable talents to voice Daryl and Merle—we’re very focused on authenticity and giving players a true "Walking Dead" gameplay experience. By setting the game to lead into Season 1, while Rick is still in his coma, we really got a chance to explore an area of the universe that has not been addressed. The main idea is to follow Daryl on his journey of survival, much how the first episodes of the show followed Rick. The big difference is Daryl is not in a coma when the game starts when the craziness was actually happening. Something to remember is survivors are not the same in the early days of outbreak as they are in Season 3, where they are forming alliances and trying to kill each other. At this time everyone still has that sense of hope that the authorities can help and that the military will rush in at any minute to save the day. We also get to expand on the story of Merle and Daryl and give them a bit more of the history that they have only alluded to in Seasons 2 and 3. The most exciting part in my opinion is we get to see how Daryl gets his crossbow, which has its own story and adventure unto itself.

AMANDA: One of the most important questions is how scary will The Walking Dead Survival Instinct be? Can we expect a ton of blood, gore and violence?

GLENN:"The Walking Dead" is one of those shows that is so intense; that is what makes it scary. Anything can happen to anyone at any time. Our goal is to mirror that feeling by keeping the player from ever feeling safe in our game. Of course we’ve set up a few scares, but the honest truth is that the behavior of our Walkers makes them far more effective at scaring us than we even hoped. You see, our Walkers' A.I. is coded so that - as in the show - they don't always behave in a predictable manner. They take all their cues from sensory perceptions: sight, smell, and hearing in particular. They might investigate something that isn't there, they might take the long way to get to a player, some react faster than others. They can also smell you if you stay still for too long. There are also random dead bodies that are actually Walkers. So what this all boils down to is the Walkers can get the unexpected drop on us from time to time. Even on us, who made the game and know how it all works!

As far as blood and gore, what would The Walking Dead be if you couldn't stab a Walker in the eye so deep that you get that satisfying squish when you hit the brain? Walker abuse is one of my big guilty pleasures of the show. Our Walker heads bruise when you hit them with a bat and our limbs amputate if you do a heavy slash with the machete. We spray blood on the walls when you shotgun them in the head. And when you play, try tossing a propane tank at them before firing a few rounds in it. This results in a fiery red mist that can't be beat. I think we got the semi-coagulated, chunky red stuff covered.

Exclusive: Glenn Gamble Discusses The Walking Dead Survival Instinct

AMANDA: Players will be able to complete side quests to come across other characters and expand their adventure. Will this be the only way to meet other characters, and how many of them will be from the TV show?

GLENN:There is a whole host of survivors you can run across as you play the game. What I love is their range of personalities. Some are terrified and would join the first person who offered help while others require a bit more coaxing. As it goes, each survivor has their own skills which can benefit Daryl in his journey as well as unlock different special relics at the end of the game to encourage replay. Which is a good thing since if you play the game through once, you only encounter about half the levels based on your decisions.

Another nice thing is that our areas are laid out in such a way that you will want to explore to find items and survivors, but you have to weigh that against the risk of encountering more Walkers. A great example of this is the second town in the game. There are three survivors there, but most players we’ve had check it out only encounter one of them. You tell them after they finished playing that there were two others and they want to go back in to try to find them. The side quests in Survival Instinct occur naturally. If you find a car that you want to appropriate, you must then find the keys for it. Or, when you are driving to your next location on the map, road events may occur – opportunities you can choose to take advantage of or situations you have to react to in order to continue your journey. Road events can range from searching an abandoned farmhouse to having to push cars out of the way on a blocked highway as a horde is shambling in. In that second example, you will use up more gas if you choose to find an alternate path to drive around the blocked highway. However, the option to drive around may not be there for the player who hasn't explored enough to keep their fuel reserves up. Running out of gas on the side of the road is really not something you want to do.

Exclusive: Glenn Gamble Discusses The Walking Dead Survival Instinct

AMANDA: Lastly, what makes The Walking Dead Survival Instinct stand out above all the other games in its genre? And what future DLC is planned?

GLENN:Crafting a compelling flesh-eating, brain dead menace is not as easy as one might think. These aren't your typical video game bad guys that can run around and dive behind a table to shoot a gun back at you. The zombies that shamble through the Walking Dead universe are slow, unintelligent undead. There are no super zombies here. Our amazing programmers made them incredibly threatening and gave them an acute environmental awareness.

Three Walkers at once is a serious threat if you are thinking about going in for some hand-to-hand combat. That is a fairly low number if you consider how many enemies get thrown in most other games. These guys want to do nothing more than feed, and they will investigate anything that can lead them to a possible food source. If you make a lot of noise, the walkers will immediately know your location so a gun is usually a weapon of last resort. But you can also use noises to your advantage. For example, players can throw glass bottles to get the attention of the Walkers and then sneak past them while they’re distracted. Breaking glass is one of those 'human sounds' that they will go to investigate. Think of it as a high-stakes game of cat and mouse where you constantly have to evaluate the situation in front of (and sneaking up behind) you, hopefully without drawing too much attention to yourself.

As far as DLC goes, we have announced a weapon pack and a herd mode releasing later in April.

Halle Berry Fans Answer The Call and Make It No. 2 at the Box Office

Halle Berry Fans Answer The Call and Make It No. 2 at the Box OfficeOne of the year's biggest surprises so far is that Brad Anderson's The Call proved Halle Berry still has what it takes to attract a crowd as the film ended up in the number two spot at the box office.

Per Box Office Mojo, Oz: The Great and Powerful retained its great, powerful hold on the number one position, adding $42.2 million in its second weekend outing for a 10-day total of $145 million.

As for The Call, it took in an estimated $17.1 million. Unsurprisingly, the audience skewed female (61 percent) and older (53 percent over the age of 30). They gave the movie a "B+" CinemaScore, and based on these statistics, there's a legitimate chance The Call will wind up with over $45 million, which would be a solid success for Sony. No too shabby considering its estimated budget is just $13 million.

The other genre films still in theatres include Jack the Giant Slayer, which hung on to fourth place with $6.22 million, and The Last Exorcism Part II, which dropped to 12th with $1.325 million. Warm Bodies and Dark Skies are still bringing in a little cash as well with $585,000 and $551,000, respectively.

All eyes are now on March 29th, when The Host debuts, to see if it will be another huge success story for author Stephen Meyer and April 5th, when we'll see if Evil Dead really does bring back R-rated horror in a big way.

New Official Trailer for the $6K Zombie Film The Battery

$

New Official Trailer for the $6K Zombie Film The BatterySeveral months back we brought you a glowing review of the ultra low-budget zombie movie The Battery (review here), written and directed by and starring Connecticut native Jeremy Gardner.

The film follows Ben (Gardner) and Mickey (Adam Cronheim), two former baseball players with clashing personalities, as they trek through a bleak landscape overrun with the walking dead searching for a glimmer of hope.

With the emphasis placed less on the zombies and more on the dynamic between the two diametrically opposite main characters, The Battery is an incredibly ambitious film that defies convention and is loaded with emotion and a sense of sentimentality not often seen in your traditional zombie flick. It’s also proof positive that a great movie is made through passion and dedication, not a huge budget or crazy special effects.

For the past several months Gardner, along with cinematographer Christian Stella, has been working hard to get the film ready for distribution, as well as continuing to showcase it in festivals all around the world to much fanfare. Finally, after months and months of patient waiting, the first official trailer has finally been unleashed. Check it out below.

The Battery will be released this June through digital distribution platform FilmBuff. And for those interested in the incredible song that plays over the first half of the trailer, it’s “Anthem for the Already Defeated” by Rock Plaza Central.

SXSW 2013: Milo Attracted to Magnet for Distribution

SXSW 2013: Milo Attracted to Magnet for DistributionThe new horror comedy Milo, which made its premiere at the 2013 South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival, has landed itself distribution; and we can't wait to see this latest little mutant running rampant everywhere!

From the Press Release
Magnet Releasing has acquired North American distribution rights to the acclaimed comedy/horror film MILO. Directed by Jacob Vaughan, written by Vaughan and Benjamin Hayes, and starring Ken Marino and Gillian Jacobs, MILO premiered last weekend at the 2013 SXSW Film Festival. Blending the gory elements of a classic critter film (à la GREMLINS) with the lighthearted comedy of an unlikely friendship (reminiscent of TED), MILO was one of the most talked about and unique films of the festival.

The sale for MILO was completed late Friday night, making it the last deal to close during this year’s SXSW.

Duncan’s (Ken Marino) life is a real pain in the ass. Tormented by manipulative, crooked boss (Patrick Warburton), a nagging mother (Mary Kay Place), a deadbeat new age dad (Stephen Root), and a sweet, yet pressuring, wife (Gillian Jacobs), his mounting stress starts to trigger an insufferable gastrointestinal reaction. Out of ideas and at the end of his rope, Duncan seeks the help of a hypnotherapist (Peter Stormare), who helps him discover the root of his unusual stomach pain: a pintsized demon living in his intestine that, triggered by excessive anxiety, forces its way out and slaughters the people who have angered him. Out of fear that his intestinal gremlin may target its wrath on the wrong person, Duncan attempts to befriend it, naming it Milo and indulging it to keep its seemingly insatiable appetite at bay.

MILO features notable puppetry by Frank Langley and Bob Mano.

MILO was produced by Adele Romanski with New Artists Alliance’s Gabriel Cowan and John Suits. Executive producers include Mark and Jay Duplass, John Norris, Kerry Johnson, Dallas Sonnier, Jack Heller, and Floren Shieh Productions’ Clay Floren and Aimee Shieh.

“Just like Ken Marino, our stomachs were hurting watching MILO, happily because of laughter rather than an intestinal demon,” said Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles. “MILO is a rare entry in the horror comedy genre that truly delivers.”

Jacob Vaughan said, "Magnet is the perfect home for MILO. The company is second-to-none in releasing quality genre movies, and their passion for MILO is overwhelming. I’m confident they will do an incredible job positioning the film in the marketplace and getting it seen by audiences everywhere.”

Exclusive: Kim Newman Discusses Horror Novel Jago

Exclusive: Kim Newman Discusses Horror Novel JagoFans can now pick up a brand-new edition of the critically acclaimed novel Jago from Titan Books and other major retailers. We recently chatted with author Kim Newman about his horror novel and what awaits readers around that next dark corner.

AMANDA DYAR: For those who haven't checked out the book yet--can you tell us briefly about the story and what horror fans have to look forward to?

KIM NEWMAN: It’s about weird things happening in an English village, focused on a cult led by a charismatic, would-be messiah character with enormous psychic powers.

AMANDA DYAR: What were your inspirations for your new novel Jago?

KIM: It’s not actually new, but a reissue – it was my third published novel under my own name, appearing in 1991. It was the first novel I began writing, though it changed from its beginnings, and a sub-plot spun off to become my first novel The Night Mayor, and I made several starts on it from 1980 onwards. I’d read a few American small-town-affected-by-large-scale-supernatural-menace novels – Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot and Peter Straub’s Ghost Story were the big beasts in the form, though I think the first I came across was Ray Russell’s Incubus; I also really like Charles L. Grant’s The Nestling, and can see the roots of the form in Ray Bradbury’s Something Wicked This Way Comes and Grace Metalious’s Peyton Place. I wanted to try something like that with a British village setting – if Salem’s Lot is Dracula comes to Peyton Place, my first thought for Jago was the Apocalypse comes to The Archers. At that time, I’d not read John Cowper Powys’ A Glastonbury Romance, which might also be floating around in Jago’s DNA, not least because it’s the major Somerset novel. While I was writing the book, Twin Peaks was on the air – another key text in community horror; I changed the name of my monstrous biker ghost character from Badmouth Bob to Badmouth Ben at the last minute to avoid comparison with the show’s monster Killer Bob.

The cult in the book is based on a 19th century Somerset religious community, the Agapemone – when I was in the Bridgwater Youth Theatre, a local writer called Charles Mander published a non-fiction book about it and wrote a play based on the case, which was banned by the Principal of Bridgwater College; later, when I was with the Sheep Worrying Arts Collective in 1980, we staged the play. Much of the detail about the cult comes from Charles’ work, though I looked at the Manson Family, the beginnings of Scientology, the Moonies and other fringe religious groups too. Besides being a community transformed by monstrousness novel, it’s also a psychic spy book – there were a bunch of things like John Farris’ The Fury (also a Brian De Palma film), King’s Firestarter and David Cronenberg’s Scanners about in the late ‘70s/early ‘80s that contributed to this, though I read a paperback about Soviet ESP espionage experiments that fed into this sub-plot.

AMANDA: Do you enjoy writing horror themed novels like Jago over other genres?

KIM:It’s a while since I’ve written anything as all-out horror as Jago; certainly, there’s a gloves-off feel to it that comes from me being younger and more annoyed – though it came out in 1991, it feels like an ‘80s novel to me. That large canvas is appealing, as well as the opportunity for mass carnage and big-scale psychedelic rock n roll weirdness. I enjoy the characters of the book; I keep meaning to go back to some of them. I did put in a few elements that now link it to my Diogenes Club series.

AMANDA: What makes Jago stand out above other horror novels today?

KIM:Not for me to say. It’s the sort of big genre book that has become thin on the ground lately – only King seems to be still writing in this mode; maybe the reissue will remind people that the mode still works.

AMANDA: What other projects do you have lined up for the future?

KIM:Next out from Titan is Johnny Alucard, the fourth book in the Anno Dracula series – I’ve been working on that on and off for fifteen years, and now it’s finally done. After that, the next new novel will be An English Ghost Story, which returns to the Somerset of Jago but in a different mood; it’s about a few characters in a haunted house rather than a large cast, and it’s a psychological Gothic rather than a splatter apocalypse.

The Asylum's Atlantic Rim Comes From the Sea

The Asylum's Atlantic Rim Comes From the SeaAmazing the things you can find by complete accident when conducting a Google search. Like a Pensacola, Florida, news site spilling the beans about the cast and crew of the Asylum’s Pacific Rim mockbuster Atlantic Rim/From the Sea shooting in their area.

The reason for the two titles is because the film being reported on is clearly Atlantic Rim, The Asylum’s version of Guillermo Del Toro’s giant robots vs. giant monsters from beneath the sea mega-blockbuster coming this summer they initially announced last summer. Given some of the legal wrangling The Asylum has had to deal with in the year since, it might not be released with such a similar title when the time comes. The tentative working title is From the Sea; safe to say that won’t be the release title. I suppose they could retitle it something like Earth vs. the Giant Monsters, but I reckon they’ve got their hearts set on the title they’ve already produced artwork for.

Second unit director Paul Sinor told the Pensacola Digest of the film’s rather familiar plot: “The storyline is that these monsters come from the sea. The sea floor opens up and these things come out. They terrorize the East Coast from Miami to Washington D.C., and the good guys send them back packing.”

Packing, that is, with giant A.I. robots of course.

Jared Cohn, director of The Asylum’s first theatrically released feature Hold Your Breath, is the man in charge here. Dances with Wolves Oscar nominee and Twilight chief Graham Greene, “Baywatch” lifeguard David Chokachi, Naughty by Nature’s Anthony “Treach” Criss, and Jackie Moore of The Asylum’s surprisingly decent 100 Ghost Street: The Return of Richard Speck lead Earth’s robotic forces against the monstrous invaders from the sea threatening the East Coast.

The Gulf Coastal Florida cities of Pensacola and Perdido Key double for the Eastern seaboard of the United States. Shouldn’t this movie be called Southern Rim?

Seeing as how Pacific Rim is due in theaters July 12th, we should expect this Asylum version, whatever it's called, just before or just after that release date.

Blue Underground To Give Us Snuff In High Definition

Blue Underground To Give Us Snuff In High DefinitionBlue Underground has been absent from the high definition game for over a year now. It's no secret that declining physical media sales have probably played a part in their reduced output, and their return to the Blu-ray arena is something of an odd choice.

Blue Underground will be releasing the notorious grindhouse "classic"Snuff to Blu-ray this year. For those of you who don't know, Snuff was originally called Slaughter - a lousy film from husband/wife filmmaker team Michael and Roberta Findlay. When Slaughter's producers deemed it unreleasable, they shelved it while searching for a way to recoup costs. Finally, producer Allan Shackleton decided to cut the film's ending off and replace it with a "real" sequence of an actress being brutally murdered behind-the-scenes. Hence, Snuff.

The film's legend grew, and soon it was picketed, protested, and talked about everywhere. It's not very good, but it's an essential piece of 70s exploitation cinema.

I don't know why Blue Underground, having been dormant for so long, would choose to release Snuff of all things. Outside of it being a curiosity piece, it's hard to imagine very many people chomping at the bit to own it. Unless, of course, some new extras will be produced that chronicle the film's fascinating history. Hopefully, that's the route Blue Underground is taking as it's hard to picture a bare bones disc (like their 2003 DVD) being of much interest.

Do you think this film warrants the HD treatment? Would you drop the cash to add this to your collection? Or are there other Blue Underground titles out there you'd much rather see them release to Blu-ray? I thought The Nesting was an interesting acquisition for them a few years back. I was hoping for some more titles like that, but it seems Shout! Factory has been beating them at their own game of late. Here's hoping Blue Underground can come back in a massive way. Their Zombie Blu-ray is still one of my all-time favorite HD releases.

Hansel & Gretel to Hunt Witches AgainThough Tommy Wirkola's Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters didn't exactly light the box office on fire here in the States (it raked in just $54 million domestically), the flick did big business elsewhere, earning $151 million overseas, bringing its total box office to $205 million worldwide. You know what that means.

Deadline is reporting that a sequel to the flick is on its way courtesy of Paramount and MGM. No word yet on whether or not Wirkola or stars Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton will be coming back for more, but we hope that this next flick has more Derek Mears. You can never have too much after all.
