Box Office: The Grey Sees Green, Underworld Still Awake

Box Office: The Grey Sees Green, Underworld Still AwakeIt's official: Americans love wolf fighting! It was a weekend where two of the top three films revolved around the notion of a name actor punching, kicking, and shooting lupine creatures of all kinds. Sarah Palin must be so excited today.

The prospect of Liam Neeson fist fighting ravenous wolves proved to be too much of a draw for the competition at the box office this weekend weekend. Joe Carnahan’s The Grey easily took the top spot, over-performing to the tune of $20 million, according to Box Office Mojo. Given the film is a smarter, more adult take on the traditional nature gone amok genre, it will be interesting to see if it continues to have four legs at the box office next weekend.

Meanwhile, Kate Beckinsale in tight leather punching and shooting werewolves held well with only a 51% drop-off. That was good enough for 3rd place and another $10.4 million. In 10 days the continuing adventures of Kate Beckinsale dropping from ceilings has taken in an estimated $45.1 million at the box office domestically, all but assuring that there will be more Kate Beckinsale dropping from ceilings to come.

Next weekend sees quite a few horror offerings in both wide and limited release. On a smaller scale, some of you will get a chance to see IFC’s horrific hitman offering Kill List and Ti West’s ghostly chiller The Innkeepers.

In wide release, the somewhat horror-ish superpowers-in-the-wrong-hands cinema verite flick Chronicle opens to answer the question as to whether or not The Devil Inside has killed the audience’s appetite for the found footage genre. Though, from looking at the TV spots, they’ve cleverly marketing it so that you wouldn’t immediately know it's a found footage flick.

But the real deal for fright fans next weekend will be The Woman in Black, Hammer Films’ terrifying tale recalling the horrors set upon a woman who lives with Uncle Creepy for years on end. It’s been called the most traumatic moviegoing experience in years by yours truly. Matt Fini actually fainted at the premiere.

Sundance 2012: Red Lights Q&A Transcript

Our verdict is in concerning Buried director Rodrigo Cortes' new flick Red Lights (review here) which made its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, and we have a transcript of the question and answer session which followed the screening ready and waiting for you right here.

Cortes: I am going to respond to all of your complaints so…..shoot!

Q: How did you start with this?

A: I studied these paranormal and hoaxes because they both described these kinds of things that collided in a way. Paranormal is the supernatural that can’t all be explained like magic. Hoaxes are human beings in action. So I had to explore the side of the scientist, and I did research for more than a year and a half, including the scientists and the rational skeptics who try to use scientific knowledge to prove certain things. The funny thing is that I found is that both sides behave in a very similar way. No matter what they claim to do, they only accept what they previous believed no matter what. In other words they believe what is more convenient for them.

Q: So with that you started creating characters around that?

A: Yeah you start with that; you try to create something physical and tangible because they are going to be inside a different world, a world they don’t know about and they have to believe they are witnessing something believable. So with the research of course you start to think about characters, so think about the investigators and you think they need a nemesis. I wanted to work to completely different films, cut in half. So there is this debunking, seeing how this sort of paranormal phenomenon cannot exist as a result of misperception or is it simply fake? But then something happens at the end and you have to start to doubt. As an audience member you have to become self aware of the “Red Lights”. And Sigourney, the strongest character in the first half of the film was an orphan in a way and Murphy kind of inherits that in a way in the second half of the film. This is when everything becomes darker and we have to enter his psychology in a way so we start thinking in a much darker way because of his obsession. But you’ve already seen the film, no need for me to describe it.

Q: Did you have a hero in mind?

A: No I didn’t, I mean, you never have a hero in mind because you know you can’t afford him (laughter). On the other hand I have Sigourney in mind. That was kinda risky because I made a dress that perfectly fit her, but I never knew her. Which means I didn’t know if she was going to say yes, but I probably knew I would be in real trouble if she said no..Thank god for my bad English because I probably offered her something that she did not understand (laughter). De Niro is like writing a letter to Santa Claus. I mean you write it because you want an electric train and you know you are going to get socks or something (laughter). But in this case, for some reason he said yes and we got the electric train. In the case of Cillian Murphy he is the only actor in the world that can be both romantic comedy and horror film just with a blink. That is why I picked him, at the beginning of the film he is a kind of a boy scout with a very innocent gate. Later on be becomes this very disturbing and obsessed guy and I think he made an amazing transformation.

Q: Where did you shoot the film?

A: Actually 80% of the film was shot in Barcelona and the other 20% was shot in Toronto, Canada. We had an entirely cultural crew. That is how we shot Buried it was shot entirely in Spain. This makes it easier to have creative control and in this case we had it.

Q: How long did it take to film?

A: It took about 10 weeks in total, 8 weeks in Spain and 2 weeks in Toronto. So we had to shoot real fast. The film cost about $15M, which is about 4 times less than it probably should have cost. So we had to shoot about 42 shots a day. Some days we shot over 60 and one day we even shot 105 shots. I am not sure how we did it and frankly I don’t want to repeat the experience (laughter).

Q: Why did you choose the birds?

A: There is a certain kind of phenomenon that I studied that had to do with that; studies about animals acting in a strange way. Like raining frogs, there is scientific explanations for these things but there are still other that believe this is some other phenomenon.

Q: Do you believe in the supernatural?

A: I am not interested in believing, I am more interested in understanding. I am not against people who believe in whatever…I feel there are a lot of thing that cannot be explained yet. Believing is not a real help to me in trying to understand reality, so I am open to everything and I try to understand. There was a poster in the lab kinda like something from X-Files with a UFO with the claim “I want to believe”, ours says in this instance “I want to understand”.

Q: At the end of the movie the Murphy character is saying “time washes away all things”. Were you leading on that Murphy’s character was old?

A: He would be about 30 I guess, 30-something. He is younger than he actually is. You see that because of the way he dresses, because of the coat he has. These small details like him drinking milk are showing that he is a kind of “child” that has to become a man in a way and he has to accept himself. When he is with this young lady, it’s not that weird…it’s 30 (laughter).

Moderator: We have time for one more question

Q: Where did you get your inspiration for the soundtrack?

A: We stole from a good one (laughter). I worked very closely with the composer. We needed something that could be made to feel familiar with a political thriller from the ‘70s. This gives that sense of conspiracy and a very strong sense of drama. To show these are real characters behaving a certain way. So we had to find a sound that was profound and grave with many low notes. It is hard to describe how you work with these things. We had to find something very organic using orchestral sounds and some modern sounds. So we made a sound that felt like the ‘70s and ‘80s and very contemporary at the same time. Thanks a lot for coming, goodnight. (Applause)

Sigourney Weaver, Robert De Niro, Cillian Murphy, Toby Jones, Joely Richardson, Leonardo Sbaraglia, and Elizabeth Olsen all star. Cortes produced with Adrian Guerra, while Cindy Cowan exec produced through her Cindy Cowan Entertainment banner.

Google Engineers Collaborate to Produce Pearry Teo's Dead Inside

Yes, our lives revolve around Google. It's gone from Yahoo!'s chumpy little brother, to the biggest website in the world. It's so big that Google somehow went from a noun to a verb! The people behind this kind of success have got to have their heads on straight. Let's hope the eight Google engineers who joined forces to produce the upcoming horror film Dead Inside were some of the good Google workers, not the ones who just hang around by the candy machine and try to say something that sounds smart.

Written by Jennifer Zhang and directed by Pearry Teo, Dead Inside is a creepy film set at a party where bad things begin to happen after one character has a premonition of another's death. Zhang is also featured in the film along with stars Lala Hensley, Matthew Mercer, Rayne Bidder, James Adam Lim, Tara Strand and Sage Howard. The film will premiere with a screening with NewFilmmakers Los Angeles on February 24. Tickets available now.

You know this is going to be good, Google people are behind it! Even the dopiest people at Google have to be WAY smarter than the rest of us, who are about one chromosome from wandering around the Monroeville Mall. But in all seriousness, check out their kick ass trailer below and visit the official website for more info.

About Dead Inside
Sarah, a mentally-disturbed teen, has a jarring premonition of her friends' impending deaths one night at a sleepover. As her houseguests begin to turn murderously against each other, Sarah must determine whether her visions represent the preventable or the inevitable... or something entirely more sinister.

Director Pearry Teo (Necromentia, Witchville, The Gene Generation) helms what promises to be a film that takes independent horror to frightening new heights. Dead Inside blends elements of American teen slasher films in the vein of Scream and Final Destination with those from Asian horror films such as The Ring and The Grudge.

Just the other day I was thinking…you know what would really put "The Walking Dead" over the top…really make it that unique, unforgettable epic show that goes down as a benchmark of television…a gorilla with a baseball bat. Just think how shocking it would have been if an ape with a Louisville Slugger came blasting out of Herschel's barn instead of Sophia. Well AMC, it's too late for that because the upcoming comic Rex, Zombie Killer is all over that already!

In April 2012, Big Dog Ink will be publishing Rex, Zombie Killer #1. Not only is it a unique take on the zombie sub-genre, but it's one helluva bargain at just $3.50 for a book over 50 pages long!

Animal lovers and zombie haters unite! This is the title that brings you all together. So take a break from re-watching Marley & Me and give Rex, Zombie Killer a look. The book is written by Rob Anderson (Animal Control: Special Creatures Unit, Great Zombies in History) with interior and cover art by DaFu Yu (Grimm Fairy Tales, Wonderland Annual), colors by Kevin Volo, letters and design by E.T. Dollman, and edited by Paul Allor (Clockwork).

Synopsis
In the wake of a zombie apocalypse, a small band of animals, led by a hyper-intelligent Golden Retriever named Rex, and accompanied by a baseball bat-wielding gorilla, begin their cross-country journey in the hope of finding safety...and a home.

Tony Watt Returns With Acid Head: The Buzzard Nuts County Slaughter

You knew the guy that brought us Frankenpimp and Vixen Highway 2006: It Came From Uranus! wouldn't be away for long. Writer/director Tony "Tex" Watt is poised to make his triumphant return in a new film coming this summer, Acid Head: The Buzzard Nuts County Slaughter. How's that for a handle?!

The film will be available as VOD and DVD release in spring 2012 on Amazon, Indieflix, moviesinsanity.com and TonyWatt.com. All the details including the cast and the bloody details are below, as well as a trailer that can only be described as, well, unique. Take a look and let us know what you think!

From the Press Release
The latest movie from Tony 'Tex' Watt, Acid Head: The Buzzard Nuts County Slaughter, is finding it's way to availability in the very near future. Watt's recent work as a director includes Vixen Highway 2006 and Frankpimp. The movie stars the director Tony 'Tex' Watt himself, and his preferred heroine and frequent workpartner Vivita playing the lead as Pheromone Labonza/Acid Head. Others starring are Lewis Mercer, Lana Tailor, Elvin Domenic, Paul Nicholls and Adam Schickedanz and in a cunning cameo as the sneaky reporter, Biff Bangs, the only European actor in the film: Kim Sønderholm.

On using the latter, director Tony 'Tex' Watt said: "When our movie about a killer goth-girl needed a main Greek chorus-type performer [the character who tells the viewer what is going on], to embody the form of news anchor: Biff Bangs... I, as the writer/director needed an internationally appealing actor who was both authoritative and able to carry some of the comedic hyperbole, with dry humor as Sean Connery did in the early 007 movies. Versatile actor/filmmaker Kim Sønderholm came to mind as the first choice, as I admired his acting prowess in such films as Craig, Tour de Force, Bleed with Me; as well as his comedic turn in the 2011 TV series Goodbye Light. Sønderholm embodied to myself, a brilliant character actor, who was very hard working and tenacious. Working with him, showed me that this charismatic and popular performer was exactly what I perceived, as well as being very humorous and humble."

Idea for the film originally came in 2009, when Award winning Canadian horror author and TV host (Flatline, Post-Mortem, Nightmare in Canada: Canadian Horror on Film) Edo van Belkom's son Luke started filming Acid Head: The High School Horror based on a loose script plot the young van Belkom co-wrote with actor/filmmaker Tony 'Tex' Watt. The script's projected budget was originally too high; so Watt decided to shoot an improvised sequel, first, based on situations deriving from his previous script.

It's not often fans of film can go and walk the actual steps the characters in their favorite films did. Most of the time movies are shot on sets that disappear as soon as the filming is complete. So when a film (especially a classic like Dawn of the Dead) is shot in a place where fans can actual go, walk around and check things out without fear of a trespassing violation, you can bet they're going to show up. And that attraction to the Monroeville Mall, the filming site of George A. Romero's classic film, is the subject for the upcoming documentary, Cinemall.

Brought to us by Room 237 Productions, Cinemall is a 35-minute film created by Gavin Shaw and Craig Belliveau. The documentary contains interviews with a variety of individuals (both locals and fans) about the crowds of people who make the pilgrimage to the Monroeville Mall every year. Cinemall even has an interview with Romero, creator of Dawn of the Dead. The film will be premiering on February 3 in Toronto as part of the Projection Booth Discoveries film series.

Synopsis
Cinemall is a documentary about the ultimate movie location. The Monroeville Mall is located 12 miles outside of Pittsburgh, PA. Every year hundreds of movie fans from around the world make a pilgrimage to visit the mall ever since it "starred" in George A. Romero's 1978 zombie classic Dawn of the Dead The line between fantasy and reality is obscured as they retrace the footsteps of the characters within the movie, and look for places where the action took place. When they enter the mall... they enter the movie.

Exclusive First News and Stills from Chemical Peel

Dread caught up today with Deadheads actress Natalie Victoria, who gave us the lowdown on the currently shooting survival horror feature Chemical Peel, in which she stars, as well as providing us with a quartet of exclusive production stills and teaser art from the Hank Braxtan-directed production. Read on!

Described as a cross between Cabin Fever and The Mist, Chemical Peel is presently filming in Los Angeles and revolves around a group of girls trapped in a remote cabin as an unknown danger lurks outside. In addition to Victoria, the flick stars newcomers Arielle Brachfeld, Stephanie Greco, Lacy Fisher and Leigh Davis with Lonye Perrine rounding out the female ensemble cast. 17 Road Films is producing.

Speaking with Victoria (who appears as love interest “Ellie Masterson” in the Pierce Bros.’ festival darling zombedy Deadheads), the actress told us of her attraction to Chemical Peel, “Oh well, I love horror as you know, so of course I was eagerly looking for my next horror project (after Deadheads). That being said, Chemical Peel is quite a treasure for me, and I am incredibly lucky to have been generously given the opportunity to actually develop the story from the start with the producer and director (Hank Braxtan) and his equally talented fiancée, Arielle Brachfeld.”

As for that development process, “The three of us share a passion for film, good stories and horror,” said Victoria, “and we just gathered around a kitchen table one day and came up with the entire story from top to finish. Once we had the story and characters, we added the creative screenwriting talents of Dan Sinclair to put it all on paper and to bring it to life via script. Dan added a lot and really did a fantastic job. When the script was in place, production soon followed several months later. I guess I was drawn to the idea of Chemical Peel because it’s realistic and scary. I wanted to be a part of a film that audiences would be both entertained and terrified by, and since so many talented filmmakers have done an awesome job with home-invasion style movies, we wanted to do something different but just as relatable.”

For me, Chemical Peel is quite a departure from my previous comedic romps on screen, so I of course jumped at the challenge to be able to show some dramatic range,” Victoria continued. “But I have to say horror fans are going to love how gory I get in Chemical Peel compared to my character in Deadheads.” (Note: The latter is slated for a first quarter 2012 US release through Freestyle Digital Media.)

In regard to Victoria’s character in Chemical Peel, “I am playing the role of 'Rae', who is the protagonist in the film,” revealed the actress. “She is a former wild-child who now suffers from depression that was caused from a traumatic childhood event. Chemical Peel opens up several years after that event with a bachelorette party which reunites her with some old friends as well as old enemies. When you first meet her, it’s obvious she is wrestling with her inner demons as well as those around her. However, when outside events start to happen around the girls which leave them trapped in the cabin, she has to fight to find a way to survive and make right on what she wronged in her past.”

Victoria paused for effect.

“But the question is, is it already too late? Queue dramatic music!” she laughed. “No really, it’s pretty cool how the film unfolds, and I can’t wait for audiences to see it. Currently we are filming, and we are scheduled to wrap mid-February and begin post-production immediately after.”

For more be sure to ‘like’ Chemical Peel on Facebook, and check out Natalie Victoria at her official and brand-new website!

Isn't it funny how the murder rate in Canada is so miniscule, but the number of hunting accidents are through the roof? Maybe those Canucks are on to something. Need someone taken care of, let's go moose hunting and then…whoops! Hey if it's good enough for Dick Cheney to try, it's good enough for me. And the filmmakers behind the upcoming picture Hunting Season tapped right into that train of thought.

Written and directed by Will Bowes and starring Carleigh Beverly, Shannon Kook, Will Bowes, Mairin Piccinin, Candice Mausner with Geoffrey Bowes and Mike Kirby, Hunting Season is the story of the events that occur when a hunting trip and a separate camping excursion suddenly collide, with tragic results. The slick looking trailer is below, and you can get more info from the Hunting Season website or the Hunting Season Facebook page.

Synopsis
Five friends must fight for survival, salvation and sanity when a local hunter mistakenly kills one of them in barren Canadian wilderness. Hunting Season tells the story of a lost generation, both literally and existentially. Meet a generation so steeped in media, technology and general ignorance that when forced into the wild, in need of employing basic, primal instincts – these animals fall short. In an era where friendship itself has been redefined as a superficial, disposable commodity, the younger generations don’t stand a fighting chance.

Set Visit Interview: Johann Urb Dishes on New Character Leon Kennedy in Resident Evil: Retribution

For Paul W. S. Anderson's Resident Evil: Retribution, we already know the director is bringing in quite a few familiar faces, including the return of Michelle Rodriguez, Oded Fehr, Boris Kodjoe, Sienna Guillory and franchise star Milla Jovovich to name a few. However, when it's your fifth time at bat, Anderson knows you have to get creative and bring in some fresh blood as well, and for Retribution longtime fans will finally get introduced to Leon Kennedy, who is being played by Johann Urb.

During Dread Central's recent set visit to Toronto for Screen Gems' upcoming sequel, we chatted with Urb about his character Leon, how he fits into Alice's world and living up to fan expectations. Check out some of the highlights from our set visit interview with Urb below, and make sure to check back tomorrow for our final interview with the other Resident Evil franchise newcomer, Li BingBing.

Set Visit Interview: Johann Urb Dishes on New Character Leon Kennedy in Resident Evil: Retribution

Q: How does your character get involved in Alice's story line at this point? Where did he come from?

A: As far as I can tell, I've just been fending for myself, taking care of business, and banding with some people. Then, apparently what's happened is Alice is in a bit of trouble. Wesker needs somebody who, what's the word... is smart enough and strong enough to go in and save Alice. Leon is the first thought that comes to mind, obviously.

Q: Is Ada a part of your crew then? Ada and Leon have a history.

A: In the game, yeah, definitely. You know, the way that I imagine it is that we sort of had this romance that never really happened. It's kind of like Mulder and Scully in "X-Files". You're waiting for it to happen, but it never does. Maybe in the next one, I'm hoping.

Q: It sounds to me that there might be a potential Leon movie spin-off.

A: I don't know about just a movie. A franchise? (Laughter) A TV series, movies, toys, you name it. I'm down. You know, this character is just so much fun to play, and these guys are really, really great. It's a great group of people, and I'm having a blast, for sure.

Q: Did you consult the game before you started filming? Did you go out and play the games?

A: No, but I did watch quite a few things on YouTube; people have put together these clips and things. I watched some of those YouTube clips, and it was super cool. I had no idea when I read for this part. I kind of figured, you know, this is movie number five and they're bringing in a new character, but I actually didn't know what to expect at all.

Q: Is there anything you gained from watching those clips from the video games?

A: Yeah, a little bit. You know- mannerisms, seeing how he reacts and how he talks. He doesn't have a high-pitched voice and I feel like he talks how I naturally talk, which is kind of slower. It matches, so it wasn't a big, huge thing for me to switch into, but I could be totally wrong.

Q: Do you have much hand-to-hand combat in this? Do you get to use that beast of a knife you have there?

A: I'm actually a little upset about this because I had a really cool knife fight scene that they have unfortunately removed because we are so behind schedule, I think, that they had to take it out. It was bad-ass. I don't know if you guys can talk to anybody to put it back in, but...

Q: Who was it with?

A: The guy I was fighting was this 300-something-pound giant zombie- pure muscle. It was a great fight. As of right now, I'm not using it (the knife). We're talking about possibly using it in the end sequence if the other one is truly, truly out, and if not, I don't know. There is some hand-to-hand combat, though, yes. Very little, but yes. I wish there was more because I immensely enjoy it.

Q: What other action sequences are you involved with?

A: Besides this end sequence coming up here? There are a lot. One of the big ones is when we're in Red Square in Moscow. We have these zombies coming at us, and these aren't just regular ones. They're firing weapons and bazookas. There's a ton of them. At one point we run out of bullets, and I have to take some of them out hand-to-hand, which is fun. Then there's a big action sequence in the car, when we're in the Rolls-Royce and firing out the window. We have the zombies on motorbikes chasing us, then we have the big Lickers. I love that name. They have Uber-Lickers, Super-Uber-Lickers, and they're all coming at us. There's a lot of fun action stuff.

Q: Can you talk a bit about the 3D and working with Paul and the 3D cameras?

A: This is my first 3D experience. I talked to Paul about it a little bit, just to find out the difference and stuff. It looks really great. It's funny because I wear glasses normally so when I look at the screen, it's all blurry and you're supposed to put on the 3D glasses. I didn't realize that at first, and I thought it was just all blurry because I wasn't wearing glasses. He's like, 'Oh no, it's 3D!' I feel like it adds so much, especially in action stuff. I feel like you're really much more in it and involved. It's cool, way cool.

Q: How much screen time do you get with Kevin Durand? My video game knowledge may be off, but I don't think Barry and Leon get together or fight together in the games at all.

A: I don't know about the games, but here we're basically partners in crime, or on this mission. It's basically a best friend type of deal; we're super close. What a great guy, man. He's awesome. We had so much fun working together. Also, working with Kevin and Boris, it's the first time I feel there are actually people towering over me. I'm the little guy now. It was great.

Written and directed by Paul Anderson, Re5ident Evil: Retribution stars Milla Jovovich, Boris Kodjoe, Li Bingbing, Kevin Durand, Shawn Roberts, Michelle Rodriguez, Sienna Guillory, Johann Urb, and Colin Salmon. Look for Re5ident Evil: Retribution in theatres on September 14, 2012 from Screen Gems.

Regardless of what we believe about the hereafter, there's one thing that will always be a constant around the Dread Central offices: We love the Travel Channel's "Ghost Adventures". It's just insanity. From Zak flexing in every scene to Nick constantly disappearing to Aaron's Buckwheat-like "Oh face", it's a constant source of entertainment.

Kidding aside, though, over the years the guys have brought to light some truly chilling EVPs and other bits of evidence that never fail to be compelling. Hell, it's worth watching for the insane places they go alone!

The good news? Season 6 is just around the corner, and according to frontman Zak on Twitter, the premiere episode will be aired on March 9th! Ah, the good stuff. Chew it slowly, people.

On "Ghost Adventures" Zak Bagans, Nick Groff, and Aaron Goodwin investigate the scariest, most notorious haunted places in the world. The trio interview eyewitnesses and historians at each location, arming themselves with the stories of the ghosts they will later provoke and confront during their dusk-to-dawn lockdowns.

We'll be there. Bells on!

Exclusive Interview with Daniel Radcliffe - The Woman in Black

As the frost of winter puts a chill our spines, The Woman in Black aims to do the same. Based on Susan Hill’s 1983 novel, this is the second ghostly retelling of the tale, produced this time by the legendary Hammer Films—the same production house that brought many of our beloved genre classics starring the greats like Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing.

Taking the lead role this time is Daniel Radcliffe of Harry Potter fame. Dread Central was allowed a candid glimpse into Radcliffe’s method, his desire to direct, as well as his thoughts on being in his first horror film and what it took to exude the “darkness” he needed.

Exclusive Interview with Daniel Radcliffe - The Woman in Black

Heather Buckley: Tell us about The Woman in Black.

Daniel Radcliffe: It’s a film about a young lawyer; his wife has died, he has become more and more disconnected from the world around him, his son, his life and his job, and he’s sent on what sounds like a fairly tedious and quite generic assignment to him. He has to go and collate the papers of a recently deceased woman, and as he goes to this house—he’s essentially tormented by the ghost of the rageful, vengeful woman.

HB: Are you a big fan of Gothic horror? Specifically Hammer?

DR: Yeah, you would think... I mean, I think my knowledge of Hammer didn’t go far beyond Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing’s Dracula. That was kind of the standard end-of-year film that was brought in when I was in school when I was younger.

But you know, that’s the thing. If you had said to me at the beginning of the last Potter film that the next thing you will do after this is going to be a horror film, I wouldn’t have believed you because I haven’t ever had an inclination towards that genre before because I’m a coward. Any kind of gore or anything graphic just freaked me out as a kid so I couldn’t watch it.

But that’s not what this film is. You know, nowadays, people are just inundated with Saw and Hostel and Human Centipede and all that stuff that kind of relies on this graphic, shocking, upsetting imagery to scare people; and this film doesn’t rely on any of those crutches. It’s slower burning, creepier, and also it’s... What I liked about the script was that it wasn’t a story set up so that it could facilitate certain scares. It was character-driven, still. It wasn’t about the "horror"; it wasn’t all about ‘We’re going to get the character to this point so that we can have this scary moment.’ It wasn’t about that. It’s a character-driven horror film, and that, to me, always seems like a rarity.

But yeah, I suppose those were the kind of things that drew me to it because it was unusual and there was something different about it, and when I met James [Watkins, the director], I immediately knew he had a great vision for the film and that we were on the same page and that we didn’t just want it to be a horror movie. It should be moving because it’s a film about death and how death affects and how grieving affects different people. Everyone in the film has, in some way, been touched by a death. And so, as well as being shit scary, it has a lot of heart in it.

HB: How much of the special effects are practical as opposed to digital?

DR: Mostly practical on this film, which is great for me. It was very different. There was almost no green screen or nothing animated put in afterwards. I mean, the Woman in Black, whenever we were doing scenes with her, we were doing scenes with her, which made it a lot easier. You know, the thing people don’t think of about visual effects doing is it’s mainly for backgrounds and stuff. For instance, the shots in the exterior of the house, there was this huge blue screen so we could then project a background of rural England instead of the motorway, or whatever was there. That’s kind of the run-of-the-mill use of special effects that people don’t necessarily think of because there’s nothing eye-catching about it. So the special effects we used were all kind of practical and scene setting in terms of making the landscape feel real, which was mainly what we used them for.

Now I’m sure I haven’t seen the finished, finished film so there could be little bits in there that I don’t really know about, but generally speaking, there were a lot less effects than anything I’d done before, but then, the budget was $19 million, which is a lot less than I’d done before… But actually, everyone was saying and was concerned with me going on a smaller budget film, like I was suddenly going to go, ‘Oh, what the hell is this? I don’t recognize any of it!’ It’s the same thing; it doesn’t matter if the film you’re on is five million or four hundred million, it’s essentially that you’re all working towards the same thing. And frankly, the more time and money you have, the more time and money you’ll waste. So I didn’t find anything different in the process of working on a smaller budget movie. Not that that was the question you even asked, but I answered it.

HB: It almost sounds like you’d want to direct someday, produce maybe, or do your own thing.

DR: I do, I do. I really do want to direct. I feel like having to make a creative decision every minute of every day would just be so exciting. The phrase that I hate is when actors describe themselves as “artists.” That really bugs me. Because I go, ‘No, you’re not, you’re the paint.’ We’re what directors and writers use to color their material. Good actors elevate it to somewhere else, but ultimately you can only be creative in certain parameters; whereas, as the director, you just have free reign in a way—and also I feel that I know while I still have a huge amount to learn about the technical side of filmmaking, I think I know how to lead a set. I know that’s one of the most important attributes a director can have, and I think I’d be good at that. So, yeah, a little more down the road, I’d love to, it’s definitely something that’s in my ambitions.

HB: What are some of the techniques you used to help you emote this darkness?

DR: The darkness is something that Harry [Potter] has as well, and it’s something that I always have enjoyed playing in and trying to connect to. People had seen me in a schoolboy outfit for ten years, and so to see me playing a dad, and a widower, I thought that would be a bit of a leap for people to have to make, but I don’t think when people see the film, they’ll be thinking about it so I wanted to make sure that I had it.

I also have a lot of hyper energy, and Rob [my character] is someone who has been robbed of any sort of youthful energy by the circumstances of his life so to just try and suppress that and to give him a kind of depression is exhausting. That’s the thing. People you’ve talked to who’ve really suffered from depression, it’s just that moving out of bed in the morning is painful because you’re just so tired mentally, and there’s just nothing to look forward to about the world. So to try and capture some of that was one of the harder challenges. But I think I’ve done it. You’ll be the judge.

HB: Did you engage in any research on depression for your role?

DR: I researched in terms of that I spoke to a bereavement counselor about what particularly young people who lose a wife go through because it’s not the same as losing someone after being together forty years. You’re just together and have the whole life panning out in front of you and suddenly to have that snatched away... The sense of injustice and rage while simultaneously being completely powerless to effect change is, I think, where a lot of the unhappiness and anger comes from.

So I guess that was the extent of my research, and my method, which I don’t have, is that I try to get myself as worked up as I possibly can, but beyond that, I’ve never really been one for... I don’t know, I’ve seen many people with many different techniques over the years that I think I’ve just cherry-picked different bits of what they all do so I have some weird Frankenstein method which seems to work for me.

HB: How appropriate for this film!

DR: Absolutely!

Joining star Radcliffe in The Woman in Black are Ciaran Hinds, Janet McTeer, Liz White, Alisa Khazanova, Tim McMullan, Roger Allam, Daniel Cerqueira, Shaun Dooley, Mary Stockley, Cathy Sara, David Burke, Victor McGuire, and Lucy May Barker. James Watkins (Eden Lake) is at the directorial helm with a screenplay by Jane Goldman.

Look for The Woman in Black in US theatres on February 3rd, 2012. The UK will be getting it on February 10th, 2012.
