Two New Posters Fly in for the Wrath of the Crows

Two New Posters Fly in for the Wrath of the CrowsCan you think of a better way to spend your hump day than by kicking it off with Debbie Rochon and Tiffany Shepis? We'd be hard pressed to find another (the operative word being "hard"). In any event, check out these two new one-sheets for the indie flick Wrath of the Crows.

Coming this fall, the flick stars Tiffany Shepis, Debbie Rochon, Tara Cardinal, and Domiziano Arcangeli. We'll have lots more on this one soon.

Synopsis
In a dirty and narrow jail, Larry (Domiziano Arcangeli), Deborah (Debbie Rochon), Hugo (Brian Fortune), Hernest (John Game), and Liza (Tara Cardinal), the prisoners, are obliged to suffer injustices from the guards and from their chief, the officer. Above all of them is the judge. Nobody ever sees him, but he is the one that sets the rules, and he's feared by inmates and guards alike. The prisoners know how to behave and what are the rules to be respected, but they don't remember anything of their former life outside the walls of the fortress of their prison.

The prisoners' sole memory, slowly emerging during the story, is the Great Evil that led them to the fortress. And the long, long time they have been imprisoned in it. Suddenly a new prisoner makes an out from nothing-like appearance: PRINCESS (Tiffany Shepis). She is a beautiful lady, dressed only in a crow feathers coat, shining and sensual. Her arrival causes curiosity, envy, suspicion, and a deep sexual agitation.

In a very short time Princess reveals her dark and supernatural nature: She can move objects with the power of her mind and is extremely strong. As Liza soon discovers, escape is just a dream for all of the prisoners. The rude nightmarish projected images they can see outside the windows of their cells make them give up thoughts of escape. But you can't escape from yourself or your past.

After execution, Deborah and Liza find themselves disoriented, soulless, and empty in the Lost Souls Prison, where they meet an old blind man named Charlie (Gerry Shanahan), "The Soulkeeper". The souls are dark bodies, sealed into inviolable cells. But Deborah manages to reunite with her soul and then attacks the old man in order to free Liza.

The two of them find an exit, but escape is everything but easy. Soon they realize that the whole fortress, outside and inside, is just a terrifying mirror game where reality is confused with illusion and nightmares become true, throwing the two girls in an endless vortex of terror and madness.

Exclusive: Savana Jade Wehunt Talks The Walking Dead, Becoming Carl Grimes and Emotional Scenes With The Governor

Exclusive: Savana Jade Wehunt Talks The Walking Dead, Becoming Carl Grimes and Emotional Scenes With The Governor"The Walking Dead" Season 3 has come to an end, and many fans can't wait for the next season to start. We recently chatted with actress Savana Jade Wehunt, who has been in several episodes of the show from being a stand-in for Chandler Riggs and Madison Lintz to a zombified Penny.

Read on to learn more!

AMANDA DYAR: You've worked on "The Walking Dead" for nearly its entire run dating back to the Webisodes for the first season. How did you first become involved with the show, and did you know at the time how big of a deal the show could become?

SAVANA JADE WEHUNT:I first become involved with the show during its second season. A friend of mine gave me the email for the casting agency, and I sent my picture with a brief bio about myself. I heard from them 2 weeks later to come to set. At this time I had not even watched "The Walking Dead" yet and didn’t know much about the show except it had zombies in it. I am so surprised at the amount it has grown over the seasons.

AMANDA:You've played other numerous roles on the show in addition to the Webisodes including a zombified Penny and a stand-in for Carl among others. What has been your favorite role to play on the show and why?

SAVANA:My favorite role to play on the show is Carl. It is really a lot of fun to get all dressed up like him with the guns and the hat. I really get into character and it’s so realistic on set to be running around with the cast. It is also really funny because sometimes Carl and I get mistaken for each other.

AMANDA: You've been a stand-in for Chandler Riggs on several episodes over the last couple of seasons. What was your initial thoughts when approached with the idea of portraying Carl's double and how has your perception of the role changed over time?

SAVANA: When I first heard that I would be photo doubling for Carl I was a little shocked because why would they want a girl to play a boy's part? Surprisingly, I fit all of his clothes perfectly, and we even look alike. Earlier in my life I played mostly boy parts in plays and such--so I was use to portraying a boy. Over the seasons I’ve gone from playing a meek and mild child to a kid who can really stand up for himself and likes to be independent.

AMANDA: As Penny, you were involved in one of the most emotional scenes of the entire third season when the Governor revealed his daughter for the first time. Can you give us a description of the scenes with a behind-the-scenes perspective from the lengthy makeup session to working together with everyone's favorite villain, David Morrissey?

SAVANA:When I did the scene as Penny it was really cool to be in the makeup chair and hearing about the character I would be portraying. Being such an important character to the Governor, I wanted to do the part justice. During the scene it was very emotional and the tension could be cut with a knife. Everything about that scene was so real it gave everyone goosebumps.

Exclusive: Savana Jade Wehunt Talks The Walking Dead, Becoming Carl Grimes and Emotional Scenes With The Governor

AMANDA:"The Walking Dead" is one of the most popular shows on television, so we're assuming you watch it. How much do you know about the newest season before watching it on AMC along with the rest of America, and what are you most excited to see in Season 4?

SAVANA:When watching episodes of "The Walking Dead" they are usually shot months before they are shown on TV. I usually have a good idea of what is going on in the episodes, but I make sure to never reveal anything to others. I am most excited to see how Carl’s character will progress in the upcoming season.

AMANDA: Since you work on one of the most prominent horror television shows of all time, we have to ask if you're a fan of the horror industry. If so, what are some of your favorite horror films ever, what's your favorite zombie themed show or movie outside of "The Walking Dead" and do you draw on any inspirations from the horror industry when preparing for one of your many roles?

SAVANA:I am a huge fan of the Resident Evil franchise and 28 Days/Weeks Later. I feel like these types of zombie films really have a different take on the attitude of what exactly is a zombie. I also like Fido for a funny take on the zombie movie genre. When I am working on zombie things I love listening to Rob Zombie or anything like that to get in the character. Also since I have been acting in haunted houses for almost 7 years now--I tend to snap into the character very easily.

AMANDA: You've been acting for the majority of your childhood and now that you're older as well. What initially made you want to get involved with acting in plays, and what has made that love of acting stay with you so many years later?

SAVANA:I started acting in church plays as a child, and I really loved the attention and getting to play another character. It also really helped me to boost my self-esteem. My love of acting has always been supported by my family, and we are all very creative and bloom from being on a stage.

Exclusive: Savana Jade Wehunt Talks The Walking Dead, Becoming Carl Grimes and Emotional Scenes With The Governor

AMANDA: What is most frightening for you as an actress and student--Chandler Riggs hitting a growth spurt this off season, your upcoming finals or a walker outbreak?

SAVANA:Ummm… Probably Chandler’s growth spurt would be my first scary thought. I just saw him about a month ago, and he has gotten taller. However, he is still not as tall as me. Finals are coming up in two weeks so I’m really trying to buckle down and work on that.

AMANDA: In addition to your professional and student careers, you've also recently worked on the Wehunt Zombies mobile app. Can you tell us about your work with the new app and tell us why zombie fans and gamers should pick it up?

SAVANA:The Wehunt Zombies app is a company that I helped start, and I am co-owner, as well as the main character in the game. This game is a zombie game where you can not only play as the zombie, but as the zombie hunter were you can battle against your friends. You are also able to play as some as your favorite zombie characters from the show and maybe even some surprise cast members as well. Right now we are getting it programmed and are hoping for a summer release. You can find the apps page on Twitter as well as Facebook.

AMANDA: We know an actress with your skill set must stay busy all the time. What other projects do you have coming up you'd like to tell us about and where can fans go to learn more about you or to meet you?

SAVANA:Well right now I am working on finishing up my junior year of college, and I am getting ready for Season 4 of "The Walking Dead." I have a few independent films coming around that I am hoping to work on, and I'm hoping to get my voice-over career started. Fans can find my Facebook fan page by typing in “Savana Jade Wehunt fan page”.

Debbie Rochon Joins Horror Comedy Dry Bones; First Behind-the-Scenes Stills

    0
    0

Debbie Rochon Joins Horror Comedy Dry Bones; First Behind-the-Scenes StillsAuthor and filmmaker Gregory Lamberson sent over a casting update for Dry Bones, the new horror comedy he wrote and is co-directing, along with some behind-the-scenes stills that shed a little light on what we can expect from the film. Read on for the scoop!

    From the Press Release:
Debbie Rochon has been cast as the female lead in Dry Bones, currently filming in Buffalo, New York. The horror comedy was written by Gregory Lamberson and is co-directed and co-produced by Lamberson and Michael O’Hear, who stars. Rochon and O’Hear appeared in Lamberson’s Slime City Massacre, and O’Hear has a role in Rochon’s directorial debut, Model Hunger, on which Lamberson served as line producer and first assistant director.

Dry Bones tells the story of Drew (O’Hear), a man traumatized as a child by a monster under his bed. Decades later, after therapists have convinced him his experiences were a figment of his imagination, Drew returns to his hometown to sell his childhood home. It isn’t long before people start disappearing and emaciated husks turn up. Rochon plays Michele, a woman for whom Drew has carried a torch all these years. She also plays the creature, a succubus capable of taking on different forms.

“All of my films have had comedy, and some of it was even intentional,” says Lamberson. “The comedy is more pronounced in Dry Bones. This is one of those films that strikes an even balance between laughs and scares. It’s Michael’s first real starring role, and he and Debbie have a lot of room to perform. The supporting cast has been doing great work so far.”

Dry Bones features Kevin Van Hentenryck of Basket Case fame and Paul McGinnis, John Renna, and Kathy Murphy from Snow Shark: Ancient Snow Beast; it introduces Amelie McKendry, Jessica Zlowak, and Tia Maurice. Special make-up effects are provided by Rod Durick, author of Filming the Undead: How to Make Your Own Zombie Movie, and Arick Szymecki. The production team is filming primarily on weekends until the end of May, and Lamberson anticipates the film will be finished in time for the fall film festival season.

The CW Pulls Cult from its Friday Night Schedule

Cult Season 1While we haven't received official confirmation that The CW is outright cancelling "Cult," the network has removed the series from its upcoming Friday night schedule for the next three weeks so you do the math.

We just got revised listings from The CW for April 12th, 19th, and 26th, and the 9-10pm spot previously held by "Cult" is being filled by reruns of "The Carrie Diaries" on the 12th and "Oh Sit!" the following two weeks.

The show had a great premise and some pretty cool casting, but things just never really gelled for us. At least Jessica Lucas has the success of Evil Dead to bask in for the moment, and we're pretty sure Matt Davis will be heading back to Mystic Falls and "The Vampire Diaries" to be resurrected by Silas.

Adrian Paul and Richard Grieco Battle and Romance Aliens in the Trailer for AE: Apocalypse Earth

    0

Adrian Paul and Richard Grieco Battle and Romance Aliens in the Trailer for AE: Apocalypse EarthFilmmaker Thunder Levin dropped a line alerting me that The Asylum has unveiled the trailer for his Costa Rican-lensed science fiction action thriller AE: Apocalypse Earth starring TV “Highlander” Adrian Paul and former teen heartthrob Richard Grieco.

Levin was quite enthusiastic about his newest science fiction opus from The Asylum when I last spoke to him a few weeks back:

"[AE: Apocalypse Earth] is the story of a group of refugees from Earth who have to survive on a hostile alien planet. Adrian Paul plays Lt. Frank Baum, Richard Grieco is Capt. Sam Crowe, Gray Hawks is an android named Tim, and Costa Rican supermodel Bali Rodriguez plays the mysterious humanoid Lea. I’d describe AE as 'Predator meets Avatar meets Planet of the Apes meets The Wizard Of Oz.' Apocalypse Earth doesn’t tell nearly the whole story, and by the end of the film, viewers will probably realize that AE stands for something much more important."

The trailer gives us a good look at some of the alien lifeforms Adrian Paul has to contend with, whether it be of the reptilian, insectoid, or sexy, green-skinned, Captain Kirk-approved alien chicks, when AE: Apocalypse Earth arrives on DVD/VOD/Blu-ray on May 28th.

Syfy Finds Working with Jamie Foxx to be Horrifying

Syfy Finds Working with Jamie Foxx to be HorrifyingJamie Foxx is just one of those people who can seemingly do it all. Want more proof? If you're a fan of Foxx and horror anthologies, then check out the following tidbit of news concerning his new project with the Syfy channel.

According to Deadline, at its upfront presentation this evening, Syfy will unveil a high-profile new scripted series from Jamie Foxx and his Foxxhole Prods. The Oscar winner will executive produce, write, and direct the five-episode horror anthology series, which will debut during Syfy’s annual 31 Days of Halloween programming marathon this October. Foxx might also appear on the yet-untitled series, which is produced by Universal Cable Prods.

In the vein of horror classics like "Tales From The Crypt" and "The Twilight Zone," the contemporary series tells creepy morality tales with themes such as envy, jealousy, and superficiality. “This is a project that I’ve wanted to do for a long time, and I’m so happy to see it come to life,” Foxx said. “Get ready to lose it when some special friends and I bring the scares this October, and who knows… maybe I’ll make a guest appearance or two along the way!” Added Syfy/UCP’s Mark Stern, “Jamie Foxx’s passion and unique perspective will transform these universal insights on the human condition into emotionally potent and truly scary cautionary tales.

Troy Miller ("Flight of the Conchords") will executive produce the series through his production company Dakota Pictures, along with Foxx, writer Jeff Stilson, Jaime King, and Julie Yorn. Writers on the project also include Mike Ferris (Terminator: Salvation) and John Pogue ("Army Wives,""Everwood").

Look for more on this one soon!

Hannibal on NBCNBC’s "Hannibal" debuted last Thursday to mediocre ratings. The network has enough faith in it that they’re re-running it tonight at 10 PM (9 PM Central). And you really should watch it. It’s absolutely fantastic.

If you told me last week that I’d be singing its enthusiastic praises after one episode, I would’ve mocked you and sent you on your way. After all, does the world really need more Hannibal Lecter?

    Turns out, yes.

It’s easy to forget how great the nefarious psychiatrist/cannibal/serial killer can be. Overzealous producers did a fine job of diluting his iconic presence throughout the aughts, first with a serviceable-yet-forgettable 2001 sequel, followed by a lame and toothless retelling of Red Dragon, and finally with a terminally forgettable origin story, Hannibal Rising, that was so uninspired that it looked to have murdered the franchise dead in its tracks.

Enter producer Bryan Fuller, who saw precisely the right way to bring Thomas Harris’ macabre universe to network television. I wasn’t convinced that the subject matter would lend itself to serialized TV, but after one episode, I can hardly wait to see the direction in which things are headed. The character of Hannibal Lecter hasn’t exactly been absent from our collective psyches for very long, but it’s great to have him back.

    Hannibal on NBC

"Hannibal" grabbed me from the very first frame. A special agent working freelance for the FBI, Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) has the ability to enter crime scenes and reenact the grisly events through the eyes – and mind - of the murderer. This “gift” makes him a valuable asset to the FBI, while taking a severe emotional toll on his psyche. Graham feels as though he’s taking these lives as he reenacts the killings, and that has turned him into a tightly wound loner on the fringes of society. Halfway through the episode there’s an awkward line likening him to The Incredible Hulk, but it aptly sets up the notion of a monster lurking beneath Graham’s surface.

That’s the perfect note on which to introduce Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen). The psychiatrist is brought into the fray to profile Graham while they’re working the trail of a vicious serial killer. Lecter is immediately intrigued by Graham’s abilities. He respects any mind as sharp as his own, but he also recognizes the potential darkness in Graham. As such, Lecter waltzes around their interactions with creepy bemusement and sinister undertones. Because, make no mistake, this man is still a monster.

"Hannibal" is as assured as any television pilot I’ve seen in recent memory. Fuller and NBC have spared no expense in giving this series a very impressive pedigree. Director David Slade is no stranger to playfully perverse topics, having previously helmed Hard Candy, a film mounted entirely on awkward tension and uncomfortable mind games. He brings that same kind of wit, energy and anxiety to the "Hannibal" pilot episode, delivering a confident and darkly humorous horror story that works as a crackling thriller and also as one of the best psychological mind games we’ve seen of late.

Our leads are fantastic. Hugh Dancy plays Will Graham with far more conflict than we’ve seen in previous iterations of the character. I remain fond of William Peterson’s grizzled and internalized take in Manhunter, but Dancy is so emotionally wrought by his “gift” that he’s immediately sympathetic. The show is smart enough to treat Graham’s profiling abilities as a curse, and so the dashing hero, so often intrinsic of these shows, is absent here. Instead our main character can’t seem to cope with the darkness he’s forced to endure daily.

Of course, Dr. Lecter is the star of the show, and Mads Mikkelsen proves to be the single most inspired casting choice this year. Even when Lecter’s dialogue borders on camp, it’s delivered with the kind of quiet menace that evokes a chill. The script is equally smart, offering numerous “signature” moments throughout its forty minutes. Mikkelsen seethes with quiet disgust while a hyper-emotional patient begs for a tissue and witnesses a gruesome murder with little more than bored indifference in his eyes. We glimpse the diabolical side of the character as well, but there’s perhaps nothing more memorable than the quietest moments of Lecter dining. Mikkelsen quietly enjoys these moments as much as Lecter savors his prey. And hell, I can’t say I’ve ever seen a series where our hero may or may not have been fed human flesh for breakfast.

There’s always a danger that this show will become another tired entry in network television police procedurals. But I doubt it. "Hannibal" is a bit of a pressure cooker, ratcheting up tension along with Graham’s psychological deterioration so steadily that it’s hard to imagine this will become "CSI: Cannibal" anytime soon. I expect we’ll see Graham and Lecter on the hunt for more serial killers as the series progresses, but "Hannibal" reminds us that network television doesn’t have to be safe and generic. This show is already taking big chances, and I only hope it pays off.

FilmDistrict to Have The Last Word

FilmDistrict to Have The Last WordChilling. That's the only word that comes to mind while watching the documentary The Last Word. If you've never seen it, do yourself a favor... it's out there and it's dirt cheap. The last ten minutes of the movie will floor you and leave you with your jaw agape. It's that damned good.

Apparently the folks over at FilmDistrict feel the same way because they announced today that they will co-finance the supernatural thriller The Last Word, which is inspired by the tragic and true story of Johnny Frank Garrett (pictured). Ben Ketai, who's currently directing Beneath for Revolver Pictures, wrote the script.

The project is set to start lensing this summer for a summer 2014 release. The story will focus on the tragic(!) aftermath endured by the participants in the trial of Garrett in Texas where he was wrongly convicted and executed for the rape and murder of a nun. To further elaborate, here's the synopsis of the 2008 documentary film by writer/director Jesse Quackenbush.

"A clash between good and evil strikes up on the High Plains of Texas when Johnny Frank Garrett, a 17-year-old retarded boy, is arrested, convicted and ultimately executed for the rape, mutilation and murder of 76-year-old nun Sister Tadea Benz. Garrett claimed his innocence from the time of his arrest until his dying breath. Sixteen years after Garrett's execution new evidence rose up from the cold case grave of the Amarillo Police Department proving they executed the wrong man! During interviews with key players the case unfolds like a recipe for executing the innocent. In Garrett's final statement he professed his innocence one last time but did so in a voice driven by hate and vengeance."

Look for more on this one soon.

Answer The Call on DVD and Blu-ray this Summer

Answer The Call on DVD and Blu-ray this SummerI think it would be safe to say that the Halle Berry thriller The Call was something of a surprise box office hit, albeit a minor one. If you didn’t heed the call of Brad Anderson’s latest you won’t have to wait that long to accept the charges.

In this heart-pounding, edge-of-your-seat thriller, veteran 911 operator Jordan (Halle Berry) takes a life-altering call from a teenage girl (Abigail Breslin) who has been kidnapped and thrown into the trunk of a madman's car. But with the clock ticking, Jordan soon realizes she must confront a killer from her past in order to save the girl's life and put an end to a serial killer's haunting rampage.

The $13 million thriller has grossed over $45 million and counting as it nears the end of its theatrical run. That’s good news for Sony’s TriStar and even better for co-producers WWE Studios. That most of the reviews seemed to indicate it was actually a solid little thriller is even better news for viewers.

If you, like me, were amongst those that made the decision to hold off for Redbox rather than rush out to theaters, you’ll only have to wait until June 25th to rent/own The Call on DVD or Blu-ray.

Artwork and further disc details are to be announced.

Check out our review of The Call.

Keep your eyes on the official The Call website and The Call Facebook page for updates.
