Watch the First 35 Minutes of On the Shoulders of GiantsK. D. Barker's retro sci-fi-/horror film On the Shoulders of Giants is now available for online purchase and viewing, but if you're not sure if it's for you, you can check out the first 35 minutes of it right here and then head over to the official site for the rest.

On the Shoulders of Giants stars Sarah Wood and Adam Lee, and one of the film's underlying themes is the 'horror' of how a technology, once invented with all the best will, can ultimately be put to terrifying destructive use.

Synopsis:
In the 23rd century mankind had finally traveled beyond the confines of Earth's solar system and made contact with intelligent extraterrestrials. New forms of atomic propulsion have finally made space exploration to distant worlds possible.

During starship Andromeda’s maiden voyage its Einstein-Rosen (ER) drive is successfully tested. A vessel equipped with an ER drive is capable of crossing the galaxy in days by traveling through self-generated wormholes. The ER drive was designed by the child science genius N'tron Zepethar.

Fifteen years earlier the starship Leviathan (with Zepethar aboard and propelled by his first version of an ER drive) disappeared on its maiden voyage. As the only other vessel equipped with an operational ER drive, the Andromeda is reassigned to the Leviathan's rescue mission.

The Andromeda’s crew locate the crashed Leviathan on Theta-25L, a desolate planet 45,000 light years from Earth. Whilst attempting to contact the Leviathan, the Andromeda's captain is killed. This untimely tragedy imposes the captaincy on Commander Jane Altaire.

After fifteen years on Theta-25L, Zepethar is the sole survivor of the Leviathan's crew. When Commander Altaire begins searching for answers to the Leviathan’s demise, it soon becomes apparent both Zepethar and Theta-25L harbour terrifying secrets...

First Poster and Still of Jennifer Blanc's The Night Visitor

Jennifer Blanc to Bring Us The Night VisitorJennifer Blanc of Blanc/Biehn Productions has spent a lot of time in front of the camera as well as behind the scenes as a producer, but The Night Visitor represents her directorial debut and we've got an early tease for you.

When this news hit my inbox this morning, my heart initially sank. Not for anything to do with this particular film, but because I initially feared someone was remaking the absolutely miserable 1989 Night Visitor. That film, an infamously shameless attempt to remake Rear Window using the same exact template of Tom Holland's Fright Night, is best forgotten and I should be ashamed of even mentioning it in passing.

Thankfully, my fears weren't warranted, and director Jennifer Blanc's The Night Visitor sounds pretty damn cool. This amalgamation of horror and science fiction centers around a mother (Brianne Davis) and her efforts to protect her six-year-old son from a malevolent alien. XTRO re-imagined as a found footage horror movie, perhaps?

God, I hope so.

The Night Visitor is currently filming in Los Angeles. Keep your eyes glued to this spot for all the latest and greatest on this offering.

Bates Motel Recap: Episode 1.05 - Ocean View

Bates Motel: Recap of Episode 1.05 - Ocean View - Norman and EmmaWhat's your take on Deputy Shelby? Whose side is he on? Now that Norma has been arrested, we'll have to watch and see how she would get herself out of that jam. Let's hope both mother and son are not separated for too long in tonight's episode.

SPOILER ALERT: Do not read any further if you haven’t watched the episode yet. This is a recap with specific details from this episode. Continue only if you have already watched it.

After spending the night with Bradley in her bed, Norman walked home with a spring in his steps and a grin on his face. Walking in through the kitchen, he encountered a breakfasting Dylan who reported lackadaisically that Norma was in jail, but only after being asked. Norman was knocked off his revelry.

Norma sat in the prison holding cell all by herself before she was visited by Norman and Dylan. When Norman asked her what they could do to help her, she replied very sarcastically, attacking Norman's devotion. Luckily Dylan shut her up with the fact that her bail was set at one hundred thousand dollars. When Dylan suggested using the motel as collateral, she refused help and told them both to leave her be. "Given what happened you don't need any help?" Dylan retorted knowingly. Norma darted a look at Norman and realized that Dylan knew about the rape and the killing. She yelled at them to leave her. After Dylan stormed off, Norman still wanted to help Norma but she wouldn't even look at him. Was that hurt on his face?

Norman was going through the piles of paperwork at the motel, not finding what he was looking for. Emma showed up and tried to offer her condolences. She even offered Norman to stay with her and her father which he declined. Norman finally found the deed to the motel and could get bail money for Norma. Emma offered to drive Norma and he accepted.

Trekking through the woods to work with his henchman buddy Ethan, Dylan tried to ask if he could get an advance from their employer so that he could get a place for Norman and himself but Ethan scoffed at Dylan's asking amount.

In a prison cell, Deputy Shelby brought Norman some food but she was not hungry. The deputy could only just leave her the tray and left.

Bates Motel: Recap of Episode 1.05 - Ocean View - Norma & Zack

Emma drove Norman to a bails bond store but no one was there then. While waiting outside, Norman started to tell her that he found the girl from the picture journal. He would not say where he found the girl but reported that the girl wasn't there anymore. Emma kept peppering Norman with questions and scolded him for not telling her the details. He tried to stop Emma from freaking out, stating that he couldn't do anything about the girl until the situation with his mom has been sorted out. Emma reluctantly agreed and leaned in to kiss Norman. When Emma asked if Norma did it, Norman lied with a straight face.

Lying in bed, Norman finally texted Bradley since leaving her bed. While reminiscing about the time he spent with Bradley, Norman was interrupted by a text update from the bail bonds guy. Norma would be released in the morning. That definitely put a damper on the fantasy!

In the morning, Norman waited outside the Sheriffs station in the rain with a bouquet of flowers. When Norma came out, she continued to give Norman the cold shoulder. Norma continued to not speak to Norman and ended acted a little childishly, while they waited for an attorney. When the attorney tried to create a defense strategy for Keith Summers' murder, Norma got offended. After a quick exchange, Norma ended the meeting and stormed out.

On their drive home, Norman tried to appeal to Norma to be more serious about her defense but she only zeroed in on how Norman went out and got laid while she was at home crying the other night. After some passive-aggressive exchanges, Norman revealed that Norma had done things that didn't make sense to him and she scared him. That got her even angrier and she yelled at him to get out of the car. When Norman hesitated, Norma got out of the car, went to the passenger side and dragged Norman out.

Norman watched her drive away and started walking himself. Dylan found Norman and gave him a ride. Along the way, Norman discover an unexpected joy of having a cool older brother and was grinning from ear-to-ear. Another great scene by Freddie Highmore. Back home, in the kitchen, Dylan started schooling Norman on dealing with their mother, comparing her to being addicted to drama and recommended that he leave her. "You don't just walk away from your parents" Norman retorted and Dylan realized that Norman didn't know any better. So Dylan announced that he's getting his own place down by the beach with ocean view and told Norman to go live with him, whether Norma went to jail or not. Norman still refused.

Heading to work, Dylan received a loan from his henchman buddy Ethan. It wasn't an advance but a loan from Ethan himself, for Dylan and his brother. Ethan wanted Dylan to succeed in their line of work and make him look good for bringing Dylan in. A guy who looked like a druggie walked up to their truck. Ethan nonchalantly asked the druggie if he got his act together, to which he responded by pulling a gun at Ethan, shot him in the neck and ran away. Dylan managed to drive Ethan to the emergency room and got help. Hm.. If Ethan dies, he got free money. If Ethan lives, Dylan would be hailed the hero. Win-win, don't you think?

Near a dock, Norma drove up to Deputy Shelby's truck and got it. He apologized for having to arrest Norma. When he started telling her that it was too dangerous for them to see each other, Norma got angry and stormed out of his truck. He stopped her and confessed his love for Norma, insisting that he was in hell because he couldn't do anything to help her. That softened her up and they shared a passionate kiss. He promised to figure out how to get Norma off. What do you think is the deputy's game? Or is he really smitten by Norma?

At the Sheriffs station, Deputy Shelby distracted the administrator and broke into the evidence room. He went on to steal the watch evidence, the one with carpet fibers that everyone kept talking about.

Driving around in Ethan's truck, Dylan was still in shock over the shooting when he happened upon the shooter at a deserted area. Dylan proceeded to chase him down and ran him over. Looking back, Dylan seemed surprised at what he just did.

At the library, Emma was doing research on Keith Summers' properties and learned the name of his boat.

Bates Motel: Recap of Episode 1.05 - Ocean View - Norman & Dylan

Back at the motel, a mopey Norma got a phone call from her attorney, Rebecca Craig. The intrepid attorney had wanted to run their own test on the carpet sample and learned that the fiber sample evidence has disappeared and so, Norma's case was closed.

Norman tried to reach Bradley but only got her voicemail and proceeded to leave an awkward but endearing message. Norma rushed in happily and announced that her case would be thrown out of court because of the lost evidence. When Norma thought Deputy Shelby might have had something to do with that, Norman got agitated and accused Norma of trading sexual favors for that act. Well, not exactly but that's what I imagined a deranged codependent Norman would think.

Outside, Emma drove up because she had an idea where the girl in the picture journal might be.

Emma stopped at a dock so that she and Norman could talk. While listening to Emma's theory, Norman kept checking his phone, still looking for Bradley's reply. Emma went on and on about her investigation before stopping to confront Norman about his phone-checking. Norman confessed that he was with Bradley now because he had sex with her. Emma, who was obviously hurt, tried to brush it off as only a hook up because she didn't change her Facebook relationship status. Poor girl. Despite her sniffles, she even managed to explain where the girl might have been hidden. Smart theory.

Breaking into Keith Summers' boat, the Seafarer, at night, Norman & Emma investigated the inside and found the Asian girl locked in a closet. That reveal was kinda freaky, wasn't it?

Emma and Norman drove back to the motel and carried the passed out girl into an empty room. They tried to clean her up.

Leaving the office, Norma saw Emma's car and went to investigate thinking the worst of Norman and stormed into the room surprising Norman, Emma and the Asian girl. Norman explained to Norma that this was the girl in Deputy Shelby's basement. Even when the girl collaborated on the story and that the deputy kept her as a sex slave, Norma still refused to believe. Norma ran back to the office to grab a newspaper with the deputy's picture in it. The girl saw the picture and confirmed it. Norma became speechless.

So the deputy had his own sex slave? Having Norma for free wasn't enough? What do you think would happen to the deputy now, given Norma's proclivity to have dead exes. Tell us in the comment sections below. Spoiler alert: Mike Vogel who plays Deputy Shelby, is the lead in the new series "Under The Dome".

The story features original 'Birdemic' survivors Rod (Alan Bagh) and Nathalie (Whitney Moore), who are joined by new friends - struggling filmmaker Bill (Thomas Favaloro), aspiring actress Gloria (Chelsea Turnbo) and several other Angelenos they encounter along the way as they battle angry birds and a host of new enemies. Also returning from the original Birdemic are Rick Camp and Eric Swartz.

"If you're a fan of the first one, Birdemic: Shock and Terror, I know you're going to like the sequel,” stated James Nguyen, writer and director of Birdemic 2: The Resurrection. “And my honest opinion is that the plot of Birdemic 2: The Resurrection is even better than the first one!"

"This is a truly special film with a truly unique, and worldwide, following,” said Marc Hustvedt, Head of Entertainment at Chill. "Making this instantly available to fans with a wide and global digital release on Chill was the perfect way to satiate the rapid interest out there to see Birdemic 2.”

The full feature film Birdemic 2: The Resurrection, directed and written by James Nguyen and produced by Jeff Gross, who has also worked on other large studio films, will be available exclusively for HD download and streaming worldwide on Chill.com for $9.99 starting April 16, 2013. Additionally, Chill.com will be the only place fans can order exclusive, limited edition bundles including signed posters from director and official Birdemic 2 hand-puppet eagles to participate at home.

Director Ngyuen has been called “a latter-day anti-genius to rival Edward D. Wood Jr.” (Plan 9 From Outer Space) by The New York Times while covering the cult success of the first Birdemic.

The film is produced by Jeff Gross and Executive Produced by Loren Semmens and Adam Deyoe.

    Synopsis
The most personal film by Guillermo del Toro is also among his most frightening and emotionally layered. Set during the final week of the Spanish Civil War, The Devil’s Backbone tells the tale of a ten-year-old boy who, after his freedom-fighting father is killed, is sent to a haunted rural orphanage full of terrible secrets. Del Toro effectively combines Gothic ghost story, murder mystery, and historical melodrama in a stylish concoction that reminds us—as would his later Pan’s Labyrinth—that the scariest monsters are often the human ones.

Meg Foster Bewitches Us With Talk on The Lords of Salem

Meg Foster Bewitches Us With Talk on The Lords of SalemLegendary actress Meg Foster plays Margaret Morgan in the new Rob Zombie film, The Lords of Salem, which hits theaters on April 19. Foster was kind enough to sit down with Dread Central and talk about her role, the film and working with Rob Zombie.

Foster began by filling us in on just what we can expect when seeing The Lords of Salem. "It's about Heidi, mostly," Foster said, referring to Heidi Hawthorne, the lead character played by Sheri Moon Zombie, "and her co-workers, played by Jeff Daniel Phillips and Ken Foree, who are DJs at a radio station in Salem, Massachusetts. Heidi receives a record which is on vinyl, and it's strange and it has, in my opinion, absolutely fabulous music. It's this haunting tune which sort of casts a spell on some people. Heidi has stopped doing drugs or alcohol and she's dealing with that, and the music on this record, when she plays it, affects her. And one comes to find out that there was a coven of witches in 1692 that were burned at the stake by a certain magistrate of Salem and there was a curse that was put on the ancestors of the people who perpetrated this. I play Margaret Morgan, a witch who's the head of the coven that was burned."

Foster was absolutely blown away by the completed product that The Lords of Salem became but always knew she was helping create something special by the work and detail that went into making it. "I feel that the film is really wonderful," Foster said. "I saw it at Sitges in Spain even though I normally don't see films that I've done. I'm in the 1692 part of the film and recur throughout in bits and pieces as we are haunting Heidi. [The film] has so many layers. It's brilliantly shot by Brandon Trost, and the art direction is by Jennifer Spence for the witches in 1692. And everything, of course, is overseen and chosen by Rob Zombie. What the art department created for the witches in 1692 was really quite extraordinary. The artistry that went into it and the environment that was created by the makeup and the costumes was really such a gift."

Foster continued, speaking on the mysterious aspects of The Lords of Salem as well as the depth of the movie. "The film is about what happens to Heidi," Foster said. "You follow her, but one doesn't really know if this is real. Is she really being haunted? Is it the result of stopping the drugs? Is it her mind? Is it a fantasy? There are some other people who live in the building where she lives who get involved also. It's really about so many things. As a viewer I wasn't sure which way to turn; every character spoke to me, which I thought was brilliant. The visuals are extraordinary. There's this wonderful 1970's feel about everything. And being from New England (they did their exteriors in Salem), I loved it. I was very personally reminded of when I grew up in the 1950's. And for the 1692 witches, Jennifer Spence created this incredible hovel out in the wilderness and it was so beautiful. There were chickens and birds that came and made nests. It was just extraordinary."

The Lords of Salem - Meg Foster

Foster feels that Zombie seriously delivers with The Lords of Salem, getting into the psyche of the audience. "People will have their own particular experiences," Foster said. "It's an amazing vision that Rob has given us, and it's a film I want to see again and again. I went so many places, personally, as an audience member, which is what I love to have happen to me. I followed Heidi into her depths. And the film moves at a very haunting pace. While I was watching it, I just kept feeling heavier and heavier and more foreboding. I was very uncomfortable. I was so moved. It's an amazing tale. One doesn’t know…are they witnessing a nightmare, are they witnessing the demise of someone…and it's so beautiful. I got all these sensory feelings, and I really felt like I was entering a labyrinth where I encountered each character and had an experience with each of them, but I followed Heidi. I followed Sheri Moon because I think all of us, in our lives, have things occur and they're very personal. It doesn't matter if you're a child and a friend is cruel to you or if there's prejudice going on or if it's a breakup of a marriage. One can get lost. And so Heidi's descent could have manifested itself in me in many ways. It took me to places where I began remembering my first nightmares. It's quite surreal in a very beautiful way."

One aspect The Lords of Salem that was particularly powerful for Foster was the relationship between the lead character, Heidi, and Whitey, played by Jeff Daniel Phillips. "They have the most wonderful relationship," Foster said. "In the midst of all this confusion and pain for her, he's a friend. He's so tender with her and she's having such a difficult time. It's really like he's holding her hand through all the hauntings and confusion and her trying to figure out what's happened to her, or what's happening to her…there's this ally and that relationship was lovely."

And Foster could not say enough good things about Rob Zombie as a director and a person. "I've never worked with someone so generous," Foster said. "He holds space for his actors. It was an absolute gift to work with him. I worked with the coven witches but we didn't have a lot of dialogue. My presence was very different. But working with Rob Zombie was…I felt so safe and it is due to his interior goodness and generosity. It was unlike anything I've ever experienced before, and I don't know if it had to do with playing the witch; it certainly had to do with Mr. Zombie. I adore his films. Rob's so brilliant. The Devil's Rejects is one of my favorite films. My favorite horror film, if you can call it a horror film. Rob incorporates so much into the characters of the film and how he casts it. You can say you're watching a horror film, but they're like novels. They're epics. They're epics of characters. They're so specific, the characters he created and the actors he's chosen to embody them so beautifully. He is gifted in that way. He's gifted to the sensibility of mankind and the frailty and the strengths and the horrors and the vulnerabilities and the violence; it all mixes into one. Some horror films are horror films, and others aren't. The Lords of Salem is a romance, in my opinion, as an audience member watching it. There's the romance, there's deception and some evil."

The Lords of Salem - Meg Foster

Foster spoke on the effects and makeup used in the film. "I wore a wig and my body was painted," Foster said. "We all had dirt put on us, and at one point I had my body painted as if it was burned. But there are some special effects that go into the whole of the film that are really quite extraordinary."

Foster was absolutely impressed by the cast, crew and entire experience of creating The Lords of Salem. "There are wonderful, wonderful actors in it," Foster said. "In my part, it was really just us in the coven and Sheri, but I got to know a few of the actors I didn't know before. And Rob Zombie... he writes, he directs, he produces, he's an incredible musician. And he has such a respect for everyone's input. It was really a gift to be able to work with him."

As for The Lords of Salem, Foster says, "It's something to see again and again. It's haunting and beautiful."

The Lords of Salem opens in theaters on April 19.

    Synopsis
Heidi, a blonde rock chick, DJs at a local radio station and, together with the two Hermans (Whitey and Munster), forms part of the "Big H Radio Team". A mysterious wooden box containing a vinyl record arrives for Heidi, "a gift from the Lords". She assumes it's a rock band on a mission to spread their word. As Heidi and Whitey play the Lords' record, it starts to play backwards, and Heidi experiences a flashback to a past trauma. Later Whitey plays the Lords' record, dubbing them the Lords of Salem, and to his surprise, the record plays normally and is a massive hit with listeners. The arrival of another wooden box from the Lords presents the Big H Team with free tickets, posters and records to host a gig in Salem. Soon Heidi and her cohorts find that the gig is far from the rock spectacle they're expecting: The original Lords of Salem are returning, and they're out for BLOOD.
