Things Get Scary on Mischief Night

Things Get Scary on Mischief NightMischief. We love mischief. We especially love mischief that leads to a night of murder and frightening mayhem. That kind is the best for sure. That being said, the new film Mischief Night more than has our interest piqued.

From the Press Release
North American rights to Ruthless Pictures’ MISCHIEF NIGHT, a home invasion thriller based on a pitch by Jesse Baget (Breathless, Cellmates) and Eric D. Wilkinson (The Man From Earth, Paranormal Movie), has been picked up by Image Entertainment, a subsidiary of RLJ Entertainment (NASDAQ: RLJE). The film, which just entered into production, is being directed by Richard Schenkman (Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies, The Man From Earth) from a screenplay by Baget and Schenkman.

From producers Eric D. Wilkinson, Richard Schenkman, and Jesse Baget, MISCHIEF NIGHT tells the story of a terrifying home invasion on the eve of Halloween. Young Emily Walton (Noell Coet), who has suffered from psychosomatic blindness ever since a car accident that took her mother’s life, must summon every instinct at her disposal to protect herself and her loved ones from a mysterious intruder.

A talented ensemble cast that includes veteran actor Daniel Hugh Kelly (Cujo, Someone To Watch Over Me, The Good Son), Ally Walker (“Sons of Anarchy,” While You Were Sleeping, Universal Soldier), Noell Coet (Cowgirls n’ Angels, 5 Time Champion), Charlie O’Connell (Dude, Where’s My Car, Cruel Intentions, “Sliders”), Erica Leerhsen (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Anything Else), Richard Riehle (Bridesmaids, A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas), Stephanie Erb (The Ring, Starship Troopers), and Ian Bamberg (Second Time Around, Warrior Road) bring the story to life.

Richard Schenkman insists that MISCHIEF NIGHT is not your typical genre movie. “This is not a horror film,” he said. “While I enjoy pictures like Scream, I think this movie has more in common with high-tension, claustrophobic thrillers like The Strangers, the French movie Them, and even the classic Wait Until Dark. While there is violence in the film, my plan is to minimize the gore and keep the effects realistic, as opposed to the stylized mayhem we see in other pictures.”

Wilkinson agrees. “I think people forget that movies like John Carpenter’s Halloween have very little blood or gore in the film. Eventually, that franchise embraced the blood and guts, but the original was all about the suspense, and I applaud Richard’s ‘less is more’ approach.”

The deal for MISCHIEF NIGHT was negotiated by producers Jesse Baget and Eric D. Wilkinson for Ruthless Pictures, and Mark Ward, Vice President of Acquisitions, for Image Entertainment.

An All New Gorilla from the 50s Is on the LooseIn horror's early days you could find a rabid rampaging gorilla in tons of different horror flicks. If didn't even matter if the movie was about them or whether it actually fit with the goings-on or not. Why? Because the presence of a gorilla is fun.

Filmmaker Dave Shaw knows this all too well and as a result is releasing a frightfully funny homage to the terror tales of yesteryear called, simply enough, Gorilla. Sara Duplancic, Francis Fisk, Paul Washer, Sherry Thurig, and Penu Chalykoff star. Dig on the trailer and more below.

Synopsis
A comedic salute to 1950's "Monster on the Loose" B-Movies (with modern twists). "Late Night Classics presents GORILLA!" tells the story of Anna, a young woman who discovers that an escaped gorilla is killing her friends and family. Her only hope to stop the beast is booze-hound former TV show host Riggs Deardon, who once tussled with a gorilla 20 years previously. Anna enlists the help of her logical yet sarcastic boyfriend Stephen, Riggs' lost in the 60's ex-wife Mimsy, and not quite with it cop Officer Landis to stop the beast before it kills again.

Tara Reid, a 90210 Hunk, and a C.H.U.D. Star to Brave the SharknadoTara Reid starring in an Asylum movie about a tornado filled with hungry sharks? Why am I not surprised? Read on to find out which stars of “Beverly Hills 90210” and the cult classic C.H.U.D. will be joining her when Sharknado touches down later this year.

Written by Thunder Levin (American Warships, AE Apocalypse Earth) and helmed by Anthony C. Ferrante, director of The Asylum’s “pretty damned good horror movie” Hansel & Gretel, “The Jaws After Tomorrow,” aka Sharknado, sees Los Angeles devastated by a monster hurricane that leaves the streets flooded with shark-infested waters leading to the inevitable moment when a tornado sucks up the sharks, producing the world’s first man-eating F5 tornado.

Tara Reid of American Pie, The Big Lebowski, and considerable tabloid fame (at least until Lindsay Lohan and Amanda Bynes stole all the headlines) leads the charge against this unholy predatory twister threatening the City of Angels. No word on what her role will be. As someone who has seen her unlikely turn as an anthropologist in Alone in the Dark, please let her be playing a scientist again. Please. Please. Please.

Joining her will be original “Beverly Hills 90210” beefcake turned recent Chippendale dancer Ian Ziering as well as the great character actor John Heard, the star of C.H.U.D., one of my all-time favorite b-movies.

John Heard once hunted Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers, now the Sharknado hunts him. Circle of life.

Sharknado promises to be a sharktacular disaster epic for the ages. No word yet as to when exactly we can expect this perfect eating machine storm to make landfall on TV or DVD, but you better believe I’ll keep you posted.

Within the catacombs, they fight for their survival, fending off hordes of hideous mutants born from the toxic atmosphere as well as other factions desperate to take control of what little hospitable land remains. Another Round of Unused Animatronics from The Thing Prequel

Another Round of Unused Animatronics from The Thing PrequelEvery few months or so another behind-the-scenes video from Universal's prequel to The Thing slips online and makes us want to set our pubes ablaze with great fury over how cool this movie could have been. This is one of those times.

Mind you, these fine bits of practical FX work were unfortunately scrapped for "more realistic" looking CGI. For more on those poor decisions, read Michael Felsher's editorial on The Thing premake and my review of The Thing Blu-ray.

StudioADI has shared another previously unseen behind-the-scenes video. The torso puppet you see below was built to show Henrick's legs kicking as he's being swallowed by the "Thing" under the shack.

The videos below the torso puppet, which we've posted before but you might have missed, showcase two animatronic pilot aliens. “The mummified Pilot and the Thing having replicated itself as one of the alien crew members. In the story originally, the Thing needed to become one of these aliens in order to fly the ship buried under the ice (note the bio-mechanical connections implanted in the creature’s back),” they explain.

ADI designed the character, built a limited animatronic puppet, and performed it on set.

The third Pilot was going to be a digital version of this creature, but due to a story change, it was never executed. The mummified Pilot was covered over with a digital energy effect, and we designed a new character, the Sanders-Thing, which was realized digitally.

Watch this latest video and the others below. Then get angry and punch the wall.

Put it this way: The news is likely to make John Fithian, president and chief executive of the National Association of Theater Owners, joyfully piss himself.

That's right, kids! We have a trifecta! Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim, the Dark Horse adaptation R.I.P.D., and Takashi Shimizu’s 7500 have all received a rating of PG-13. While not entirely unexpected, we're still burning up over yesterday's news story about R-rated films being the reason that the North American box office has been flailing.

That being said, I'll end this story just like I did yesterday's...

Idiot.

Their only neighbor for miles is a strange hermit who only comes out at night, under the shroud of darkness. As Scott and Penny get deeper into his world, they start to suspect that this man is actually an infamous artist known only as "Mr. Jones" and they've stumbled across a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to document his bizarre existence.

New Errors of the Human Body Clip Wants its Mouse BackLet us be clear... we haven't the slightest idea what is happening in this latest Errors of the Human Body clip. I mean, really... no idea. The only thing we know for sure if that this dude wants his mouse back in a bad way. Read on and be bewildered!

Errors of the Human Body opens in select theaters today and is now available to watch on Cable VOD, SundanceNOW, and other digital outlets (iTunes, Amazon Streaming, PS3 Playstation Unlimited, XBOX Zune, Google PLAY, and YouTube).

From the Press Release
IFC Midnight has acquired all North American rights to Eron Sheean’s thriller ERRORS OF THE HUMAN BODY. Sheean wrote the screenplay for the film with Shane Danielsen. The picture stars Germany’s Karoline Herfurth (PERFUME: THE STORY OF A MURDERER, THE READER, WE ARE THE NIGHT), Iceland’s Tómas Lemarquis (NOI THE ALBINO, PAINLESS, SNOW PIERCER), Rik Mayall (THE YOUNG ONES), and Canada’s rising star Michael Eklund (THE DIVIDE, THE DAY, FRINGE, ALCATRAZ) and was produced by Instinctive Film’s Darryn Welch and Cole Payne.

Following a divorce from his wife and the loss of his son to a rare genetic mutation, Canadian geneticist Geoff Burton (Elkund) relocates to the harsh, wintry scenery of Dresden, Germany, to work on a groundbreaking new project that might just be his key to redemption. When teamed up with his former intern and colleague Rebekka (Herfurth), he starts working on a human regenerative gene with direct ties to his personal tragedy; yet, matters prove increasingly difficult: Jealous co-workers’ feelings are ruffled, old flames are rekindled, and personal demons become consistently harder to suppress in this new and oppressive work environment.

Still haunted by the memory of his wife and his failures to save his deceased son, Burton finds himself maddeningly close to a medical breakthrough, yet quickly spiraling out of control. Collapsing his career and personal life into a dark and increasingly dangerous tunnel-vision of competitive genetics, delusions of all kinds, and the terrifying potential of massive discoveries gone awry, Burton is quite literally the stranger in the strange land. The question remains: How far will Burton be willing to go to atone for the errors of his past?

The Wretched Trailer Bows Online, Director Richard Greenwood Speaks

The Wretched Trailer Bows Online, Director Richard Greenwood SpeaksIn our continued support of independent horror cinema, here’s a peek at Hinnon Valley filmmaker Richard Greenwood, Jr.’s latest via a trailer for his period piece/zombie short film The Wretched.

Set in 395 AD Germania, the film follows the plights of Centurion Markus Valerious (actor Nicolas Charles) and his men, who, in an effort to crush the Germanic tribes that threaten their Roman supply chain, find themselves confronting an evil far more insidious.

Written by executive producer Collin Watts and produced by him and Greenwood, the director completed principal photography on The Wretched earlier this year in and around Los Angeles, California.

Ashlynn Yennie (The Human Centipede), Joey Kern (Cabin Fever), Bob McClean, Don Stephens, Jr., Brett Wyman and Maitza Brikisak also star, with Jacky Ferdowsi and Michele Monaco having provided makeup FX.

“Collin contacted me, and once I read the script, I could immediately see myself making this film,” Greenwood told us of the inception of The Wretched. “I loved the idea of bringing a zombie film tastefully and intelligently into a previously untouched period in history.”

With self-financing by Watts, the pair then jumped head-first into pre-production.

“We are looking to ride the wave of Hinnon Valley's festival success to get the ball rolling with The Wretched,” Greenwood told us of his plans for the latter, completed short film. “Due to the uniqueness and concept of this story, I believe that it has more than the potential to exceed any of our previous successes and to become a huge hit.”

Planning to release online a full teaser for The Wretched this June, the filmmaker furthered, “Once audiences get a taste of the bloodshed in it, we know they’re going to be hungry for more, and Collin’s (feature) script has generated a lot of interest from big name talent (who are) excited about working on such an original project.”

”Our goal with the teaser has always been to get the project out there for audiences to get excited about and to use the buzz to attract potential financiers for the eventual feature,” offered Watts of his vision. “We had such an amazing cast and crew, and we’re only now beginning to scratch the surface of what this can become.”

Looking to premiere the short film in its entirety at a major L.A. horror film festival this year, Greenwood is also attached to direct his feature script Lost the Night for Therapy Studios in the coming months.
