Sounds as if business has finally picked up regarding the FX Network's adaptation of Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan's vampire epic The Strain. The first lead has been cast, and we expect more to be announced shortly.

Corey Stoll (pictured; "House of Cards") has been tapped as the lead of FX's high-profile drama project "The Strain" from filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and veteran showrunner Carlton Cuse ("Lost,""Bates Motel"). "The Strain," an adaptation of del Toro’s vampire novel trilogy, formally has a pilot order, but FX president John Landgraf has indicated it is being eyed for a series order. The project already has a full writing staff in place churning out scripts, and per Deadline, FX has committed $500,000 to creature creation.

Del Toro will direct the pilot from a script he co-wrote with Chuck Hogan, who also co-authored the books with del Toro. Cuse, who helped develop the adaptation, executive produces alongside del Toro and will serve as showrunner, overseeing the potential series with del Toro. Hogan and del Toro’s longtime manager/producing partner Gary Ungar also serve as exec producers of the project, produced by FX Prods.

"The Strain" is a high-concept thriller that tells the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Stoll), the head of the Center for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. He and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Eph, his team, and an assembly of everyday New Yorkers wage war for the fate of humanity itself.

“To me, having the right lead for 'The Strain' series was perhaps the most important creative task,” said del Toro. “To be able to secure the perfect actor in Corey Stoll sets the project on the right track. To embody a character like Ephraim Goodweather – who transitions through every emotion and situation imaginable and which anchors the narrative of the series – requires amazing talent and craft. Corey has both in spades as he has demonstrated it over and over again.”

Is having someone design you a one-sheet consisting of floating heads like some form of right of passage or something? One would think so. The latest victim of the flaccid and ongoing trend is Swamy Kandan's The Secret Village. At least we also have a new trailer to distract us.

The flick stars Jonathan Bennett (Memorial Day, Mean Girls), Ali Faulkner (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1), Stelio Savante ("Ugly Betty"), and Richard Riehle (Halloween II). Look for more soon!

Synopsis
The Secret Village is a psychological thriller wherein two strangers rent a house together in a small village to research ergot poisoning and the mysterious outbreak of mass hysteria. Rachel is a beautiful journalist researching for an article she hopes will be sensational. Greg is an unsuccessful screenwriter who recently broke up with his girlfriend. The locals are unwilling to talk to outsiders. Ergot poisoning has affected this small village for years, and the mysterious activities are kept a secret by the locals. Greg disappears, and Rachel is left alone to uncover the mystery of the village.

With only three episodes remaining in Season 4 of "The Vampire Diaries," all roads lead to graduation day, and we have a preview of Ep. 4.21, "She's Come Undone," along with the synopses of Eps. 4.22, "The Walking Dead" (seriously?), and 4.23, "Graduation" (of course!).

Midnight Releasing’s next big horror film release Hayride will be hitting shelves on May 7th, 2013. Hayride will also be available for rental at Redbox and is currently able to be saved in your Netflix user’s queue.

Hayride was filmed in Southern Alabama and is loosely based on the childhood experiences of the director, Terron R. Parsons, whose family used to have an annual haunted hayride attraction. The cast includes Mississippi native Sherri Eakin, who is no stranger to independent horror movies, Jeremy Ivy, and veteran actor Richard Tyson (Kindergarten Cop; Black Hawk Down; Me, Myself & Irene). The film follows a college student returning home for Halloween who is forced to face his childhood fears when an escaped killer takes refuge in his family’s haunted hayride attraction. With Why Don't You Play in Hell? (or Jigoku de naze warui? for you purists out there), Sono (Love Exposure, Suicide Club) has returned to and improved an over ten-year-old screenplay he wrote; its underlying theme is "the love for 35mm film."

Jun Kunimura, Shinichi Tsutsumi, Hiroki Hasegawa, Gen Hoshino, Fumi Nikaido, and Tomochika all star. The film opens in Japan on September 28th.

Aftershock (review), an earthquake thriller scripted by Cabin Fever and Hostel's Eli Roth, Nicolas Lopez, and Guillermo Amoedo, revolves around an insane asylum on an island, where the inmates escape during the quake.

It’s the next "Eli Roth Presents" film, and it marks the English-language debut from director Nicolas Lopez. His last two films, Que Pena Tu Vida and Que Pena Tu Boda, were the highest-grossing Chilean films of 2010 and 2011.

Roth and Lopez wrote the story together, inspired by the latter’s experience when an earthquake devastated Chile in 2010. In his first big acting role since Inglourious Basterds, Roth plays the lead. Among the other cast is Selena Gomez, who was in Chile doing a concert and came over to do a cameo. Lopez’s frequent collaborators Ariel Levy, Nicolas Martinez, and Lorenza Izzo also star along with Natasha Yarovenko, Andrea Osvart, and Miguel Asensio.

Look for it in theatres on May 10th.

Despite a few bumps in the road with rescheduling and some preempted episodes, NBC has shown it has faith in "Grimm" by renewing it (along with four other key drama series, including "Revolution") for the 2013-14 season.

Only Lovers Left Alive with Tom Hiddleston, Tilda Swinton, John Hurt, and Mia Wasikowska takes to 20 the number of films in competition for the top Palme d'Or prize at the Riviera movie extravaganza. It is the story about a centuries-long love affair between two star-crossed vampires.

Hiddleston plays Adam, an underground musician who's deeply depressed by the direction of human activities. He reunites with his lover, Eve (Swinton), though their idyll is soon interrupted by Eve's wild and uncontrollable younger sister, Ava (Wasikowska).

Per TV Guide, Gilliard will play Bob Stookie, a former Army medic who is haunted by his past, both prior to the zombie apocalypse and after. The comic version of the character, Bob Stookey, is a much older man, the local town drunk of Woodbury, who was also a former Army medic.
