Director Wes Ball Shows Off Some Creepy Concept Art for The Maze Runner

Director Wes Ball Shows Off Some Creepy Concept Art for The Maze RunnerFirst-time feature director Wes Ball has a daunting task ahead of him to adapt James Dashner‘s bestselling 2009 young-adult novel The Maze Runner, and the former special effects designer shared some concept art that he himself created for inspiration.

EW posted the following image and description:

The massive walls seem simultaneously industrial and ancient. They have the scale of natural rock formations, but there is no such thing as straight lines like these in the wild. From the creeping vines and empty corridors, the walls also seem to have been totally abandoned... except for a group of young boys who live in the grassy center of this intimidating structure, [but] not all of the boys are eager to find out what lies beyond the barrier.

20th Century Fox has just begun production on the saga, and here's how Ball explains the illustration: “It was for me, really. I like writing images. I started daydreaming about what it’s like to be at those doors and looking up at those walls.”

The story begins with the lead character, Thomas (played by "Teen Wolf"‘s Dylan O’Brien), awakening inside a rusting, rumbling industrial elevator, which ascends from some unfathomable depth — into a peaceful meadow. He has no idea who he is or where he comes from. “The doors open and deposit him in this rustic, idyllic place surrounded by walls on all sides,” says Ball. "[Thomas] is just one of many boys who have come up once a month in the last three years. They have been trying to figure out how the hell to get out of this place and deal with the maze beyond the walls. The doors open in the morning, and the boys have to get back before they close because nobody survives a night in the maze.”

There’s something out there that preys on the ones who stay out too long. The kids call the creatures Grievers, though none has ever actually seen one (and lived)... Only the bravest of the boys are willing to venture out to look for escape. A moment like that is what Ball hints at amid the tiny figures in this concept drawing. ”Thomas is the boy who takes that step forward when everybody else takes a step back,” he says. “He’s curious. That’s partly perceived as a threat, but it actually may be the thing that gets him out.”

Look for The Maze Runner, starring Dylan O’Brien, Jacob Latimore, Will Poulter, Kaya Scodelario, Aml Ameen, Blake Cooper, and Thomas Brodie-Sangster, on February 14, 2014. Noah Oppenheim and James Dashner (author of the novel) wrote the script. Wes Ball directs.

Darclight Gets Contracted to Eric EnglandEric England's latest and most infectious tale of terror, Contracted, has been picked up by Darclight Films, and the plan is to spread the sickness all over the Cannes Film Market. If you're going, pack a respirator. Ya never know!

From the Press Release
Darclight Films announces the acquisition and Cannes market premiere of psychological horror-thriller CONTRACTED. First-look screenings will be presented to buyers starting next week.

CONTRACTED takes the traditional zombie story and seamlessly transforms it into something wholly modern and horrifying, a macabre trip that needs to be experienced to believe it.

CONTRACTED tells the terrifying tale of a young girl who has a one-night stand with a stranger, contracting what she thinks is a sexually transmitted disease, but it is actually something far worse. As things begin to crumble around her, she's sent on a disturbing and bloodcurdling journey, sure to keep audiences on the edge of their seats. With nail-biting suspense and frightening twists, CONTRACTED is a horror film for those who think they've seen it all.

“CONTRACTED is a uniquely breakthrough and edgy genre-driven film with a shrewd twist on the traditional zombie film and worldwide commercial viability,” said Clay Epstein, VP Sales & Acquisitions for Arclight Films. “We’re excited to present CONTRACTED to buyers and audiences in Cannes.”

Contracted is directed by Eric England (MADISON COUNTY) and features a who's who of horror film and television thesps including Najarra Townsend (2005's hit indie ME AND YOU AND EVERYONE WE KNOW, "90210"), Caroline Williams (TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2, HATCHET III, NIP/TICK), celebrated horror force Simon Barrett (V/H/S, ABC'S OF DEATH, YOU'RE NEXT), Charley Koontz ("COMMUNITY," RUBBER), Dave Holmes ("RENO: 911" DVD ON TV), and Ruben Pla (INSIDIOUS), amongst others.

"We’re delighted to be partnering up with Clay Epstein and the Arclight team,” said producer Raphael Margules. “They understand the picture, and we’re eager to unveil it to audiences worldwide. We believe CONTRACTED offers what genre fans want from a horror film, with new twists and turns sure to have them gasping for breath."

“CONTRACTED tells a disturbing side of the story that other zombie films have never told,” said director Eric England. “We had an amazing cast and crew on this film that helped create something so unnerving and relatable that you'll be glad it's not happening to you.”

Darclight Films is handling international sales for CONTRACTED, and XYZ Films will be handling North American sales. The film was produced by Raphael Margules and J.D. Lifshitz of BoulderLight Pictures.

Drafthouse Films Sets Up Shop In A Field In EnglandGood news for fans hoping that Kill List and Sightseers director Ben Wheatley's latest film, A Field In England, would find its way Stateside. Drafthouse Films has snapped up the North American rights.

From the Press Release
Drafthouse Films, the film distribution arm of the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, announced today the acquisition of North American rights to original horror film A Field In England. This is the fourth feature film from writer/director Ben Wheatley, whose credits include the highly acclaimed tour-de-force thriller Kill List, the Edgar Wright-produced 2012 Cannes Film Festival selection Sightseers, and a segment in anthology horror film The ABCs of Death. Billed as "a psychedelic trip into magic and madness," A Field In England follows a group of English Civil War soldiers in the 17th century who are captured by an alchemist and led into a vast mushroom field, where they fall victim to violent and nightmarish forces. A theatrical and VOD release is planned for 2013.

With a new feature, the 8-figure-budgeted sci-fi/action epic Freak Shift, currently in pre-production, Wheatley and producers Claire Jones & Andy Starke assembled A Field In England with financing via Film4's talent and ideas arm Film4.0 headed up by Anna Higgs. The film stars Reece Shearsmith ("The League Of Gentlemen") and Kill List's Michael Smiley and features Julian Barrett ("The Mighty Boosh") in a small role.

Wheatley's work has been lauded by both critics and moviegoers, placing him at the forefront of a new wave in contemporary cinema emerging from the festival circuit dubbed "art-house horror." Chris Hewitt of Empire Magazine has proclaimed, "In only three years, Ben Wheatley has gone from unknown to one of the UK's most exciting, hilarious and most violently disturbing filmmakers."

"When we world-premiered Ben's debut feature Down Terrace at Fantastic Fest in 2009, he deservedly won top prize, the AMD Next Wave award. We knew we were witnessing the debut of a major talent," says Fantastic Fest Founder and Drafthouse Films CEO Tim League, "Ben represents the ideal filmmaker we love to support at Drafthouse Films and fully embodies our unique brand - a visionary who compounds genre themes and artfully unusual sensibilities. We are incredibly honored to be working with him to release A Field In England."

"I'm very excited to be working with Drafthouse on A Field in England. They are a great company who have released some groundbreaking films over the last few years. I went to Fantastic Fest in 2009 wanting to visit a cinema I'd read about for years (and to buy up as many Mondo posters as I was allowed to take on the plane); I came away with the start of a career. Drafthouse is a name that will always be special to me, and I'm really happy to be working side by side with them," says Wheatley.

Anna Higgs from Film 4.0 says, "One of the central strands of Film4.0 is to work with directors and producers in new and agile ways, so it's fitting that we can work with Ben, who is one of the industry's most original and exciting filmmakers. A Field in England is a brilliantly compelling story that builds on Ben's innovative work to date; I'm excited to be working with him and Rook Films to forge new paths across development, production, and distribution. So it's of course a brilliant fit that we're working with the always dynamic Drafthouse again, having released Four Lions with them in 2010."

Thale Sequel Officially in the Works

Thale Sequel Officially in the WorksA sequel is in the works to writer/director Aleksander Nordaas' modern dark fairy tale Thale, and we have the first info and details for you right here. Besides that, there's never a reason not to have a chance to check out the huldra's tail!

From the Press Release
US-based Epic Pictures Group has announced today that it has partnered up with Norwegian-based Yesbox Productions to finance and produce an English-language sequel to the internationally successful THALE, the mythological suspense thriller which was written and directed by Aleksander Nordaas. The sequel will again be written and directed by Nordaas, with Patrick Ewald and Shaked Berenson of Epic Pictures Group producing alongside Bendik Heggen Strønstad of Yesbox Productions. The original film played at both Toronto and SXSW last year and became a worldwide hit, having been released in almost 50 countries.

In the original Norwegian film, two crime scene cleaners discover a mythical, tailed female creature in a concealed cellar. She never utters a word, unable to tell her story, but the pieces of the puzzle soon come together: She's been held captive for decades for reasons soon to surface. THALE is based on a mythical character in Nordic folklore called the "huldra." According to the myth, a huldra is a beautiful creature with female attributes living deep in the woods. It is said that it seduces men that work in the woods by humming a beautiful song, and they never return to their village. You can recognize a huldra by its cow tail.

"Ever since we screened THALE in Toronto and released it in the US, there's been a continuous stream of inquiries from fans, eager to know if there will ever be a sequel - and now, teaming up with Epic Pictures Group, we're finally able to announce that yes, there will be! In English for an international audience. And let's just say that this time, Thale will be facing some very different kinds of animals,” said Nordaas.

Producer Bendik Heggen Strønstad of Yesbox Productions: “Epic Pictures has been a great partner on the first film, and we are thrilled to have them on board as producers on the sequel. It's vital for us to be producing this sequel with someone who wants to pursue the style and tone in Thale, and with Aleksander L. Nordaas still on board as scriptwriter and director, all premises are in place to kick it up a notch - while still preserving the signature."

Producer Patrick Ewald of Epic Pictures Group: "The English language version of THALE will be a co-production with our Norwegian friends aimed at a worldwide audience. We will be increasing the budget and look of the film so that Aleksander and Bendik's vision can be accomplished on a grand scale. We are incredibly excited to be working with such talented filmmakers and look forward to creating a film filled with scares, laughs, and pure entertainment. Soon kids around the world will be looking under their beds to see if they have a huldra hiding under there."

Producer Shaked Berenson of Epic Pictures Group: "From the moment we saw the film at SXSW in 2012, we were taken by the film and its powerful vision and knew that we needed to work with Aleksander and Bendik and help to get their next project produced and financed."

Lastly, The CW adds to its previously ordered "The Originals" with another Julie Plec project: "The Tomorrow People," which is based on the UK series of the same name. It tells the story of several young people from around the world — Peyton List, Robbie Amell, Luke Mitchell, and Aaron Yoo among them — who represent the next stage in human evolution, possessing special powers like teleportation and telepathy. They work together to defeat the forces of evil. "Chuck"'s Phil Klemmer will write and executive produce with Plec ("The Vampire Diaries") and Greg Berlanti ("Arrow"). Mark Pellegrino and Madeleine Mantock will also star in the series.

On the more sci-fi side are two projects from The CW we probably won't be covering but have mentioned before: "Star-Crossed," previously known as "Oxygen," an epic romance between a human girl (Aimee Teegarden) and an alien boy (Matt Lanter) when he and eight others of his kind start attending high school in the suburbs, and "The 100," which takes place nearly a century after a nuclear war has destroyed civilization, when a spaceship sends 100 juvenile delinquents back to Earth to investigate the possibility of re-colonizing.

Celebrate Mother's Day with Horror's 11 Most Memorable Moms

Celebrate Mother's Day with Horror's 11 Most Memorable MomsIt's that time of year again when we take a moment to honor our moms. And how great they are, right? Well, here at Dread Central we can turn even the most loving moms into something horrific, and in celebration of Mother's Day, we bring you Horror's 11 Most Memorable Moms!

Read on… and eat your vegetables for chrissake!

Okay, so not all the moms on this list are psychotic killers; some are heroes, and some fall somewhere in between. But they're all great for their own reasons. As usual, we'll start out with some honorable mentions, and we certainly have some remarkable moms to speak about. We'll start with Estelle Collingwood (played by Cynthia Carr) in the original Last House on the Left. Only a mother's love could drive a person to bite a guy's Johnson off as an act of revenge! Another great justice-seeking mother was Kate (played by Vera Farmiga) in Orphan. When she realized what Esther was doing to her family, she showed her no mercy.

We also have a few psycho moms to mention, including Mommie Dearest herself, Joan Crawford (played by Faye Dunaway). Yes, it's technically more drama than horror, but any time a film contains a wire hanger beating, it qualifies as horror. Barbara Hershey was a delightfully overprotective mother to the point of instability in Black Swan, and as mentally broken mothers go, it's hard to top Charlotte Gainsbourg as a character simply referred to as "She" in Antichrist. However, deciding to carry your dead baby to term may just top it all as Madeline Matheson (Jordan Ladd) did in Grace. The film shows why that's a really bad idea.

And we're almost obligated to throw some love to the two moms from Troma's Mother's Day (1980) and Darren Lynn Bousman's 2010 remake, Rose Ross as Mother and Rebecca De Mornay as Natalie "Mother" Koffin, respectively.

And when you're wishing your own mom Happy Mother's Day this year, thank her for not being an "Octomom," ridiculously tanned mom or "Plus 8." Talk about horrors!

Celebrate Mother's Day with Horror's 11 Most Memorable Moms

Mother Firefly (Karen Black in House of 1,000 Corpses and Leslie Easterbrook in The Devil's Rejects)
Played by not one, but two memorable actresses, Mother Firefly had the unenviable task of trying to keep the Firefly clan in line. You could say she did a pretty good job of it, but considering they spent most of their time raping and murdering people, you might think there was some delinquent parenting going on here somewhere. Regardless of that, though, Mother Firefly was nothing if not impressive, and her over-the-top, sultry "way with men" made her an outstanding character and a top mom for sure!

Sarah Scarangelo (Alysson Paradis in Inside (À l'intérieur)
Sarah was a mom just about to give birth to her first baby... and then she showed up. Sarah is confronted by one of the most psychotic women ever captured on film, and she holds up quite well for a woman who's nine months pregnant. Well, she holds up well for a really long time. But Beatrice Dalle's antagonist, known only as La Femme, is simply too much to withstand, and Sarah's motherhood is short-lived.

Donna Trenton (Dee Wallace in Cujo)
Stephen King has made a career out of disturbing his readers. And he often does this by placing his characters in trapped, claustrophobic situations. He never achieves this more perfectly than in Cujo, putting Donna Trenton in a tiny hatchback with her child while a rabid St. Bernard does everything he can to get at them. And not only did Dee Wallace play a great character in the film, according to her daughter, Gabrielle Stone, her portrayal of Donna helped Gabrielle feel safe in her own home because of how badass her mom was in the film. Grrr!

The Woman (Pollyanna McIntosh in The Woman)
You might think that if we were going to highlight a character from The Woman in a top moms list ,then that nod would have to go to Angela Bettis as Belle Cleek. Although Bettis gave her usual wonderful performance, the mother we chose to honor was The Woman herself. Some mothers build their families the traditional way while other have families thrust upon them, as was the case with this cannibalistic, feral woman. She begins the film as something of an antagonist, but through the brilliance of Jack Ketchum's writing and Lucky McKee's direction, she morphs into the victim and then the hero of the film. And as the dust settles, The Woman finds herself with a new family which she decides to lead. A great ending to a very impressive film.

Margaret White (Piper Laurie in Carrie)
Now here's a legendary horror movie mother, and Margaret White absolutely earned her way onto this list by being truly batshit crazy and driving her daughter mental as well with her Christian Fundamentalist beliefs and obsessive personality... bad combination. As Carrie becomes increasingly more distraught, Margaret's madness worsens as well until the final bloody climax of the film. Piper Laurie's portrayal of this psycho mom is one for the ages and helped make Carrie the legendary movie it became. Julianne Moore has some big shoes to fill in the Carrie remake, but we're rooting for her to join Piper next year on lists like this one.

Tiff (Jennifer Tilly in Seed of Chucky)
Who says your child has to be flesh and blood to be a super mom? Of course we know Tiff showed up well before Seed of Chucky, but it was in this film where she officially became the great mom we all knew her to be. Sure, it was tough for her to quit killing people and act like a good mother, but she did her best. Tiff's Glen/Glenda baby inspired the bloodthirsty plastic babe to go on the straight and narrow, but living a good life while trying to co-exist with Chucky is pretty much impossible, and Mama Tiff finds this out. Although she does manage to find her escape in the end.

Phyllis (Traci Lords in Excision)
Excision was one of last year's most impressive horror films, and much of the reason for that was the amazing performance of AnnaLynne McCord in the lead role of Pauline. However, Pauline would not have been the powerful character she was without the influence of her mother, Phyllis, brought to life wonderfully by Traci Lords. Phyllis is an absolutely cold and domineering mother who fails to realize just how disturbed her daughter Pauline has become. It all comes clear to her very quickly, however, during in the film's thrilling climax.

Vera Cosgrove (Elizabeth Moody in Dead Alive)
Sweet Vera Cosgrove. She's about as cuddly as a porcupine, and there couldn't be a better patient zero for a zombie outbreak. After getting bitten by an infected Sumatran Rat-Monkey, Vera starts the rapid degradation from strong, domineering mother to blathering, slathering undead beastie. In a movie famous for its over-the-topness, Vera epitomizes the tone of the film and is roof-raisingly monstrous. She is a memorable mom in an unforgettable film, and there is always something to be said for a character that can shoot infected pus from her arm across a dinner table before eating her own ear. You go, Vera!

Edith "Mama" Brennan (Javier Botet in Mama)
A film that portrays just how strong a mother's love can be, Mama illustrates how powerful that love is. A specter of a distraught mother past, Mama is out to replace the child she lost and is willing to cross the lines between the living and the dead to do so. She's one of the scariest mothers on this list. Mama builds to a crescendo as we learn just who this mysterious mother creature is.

Norma Bates (Legendary Psycho horror character and Vera Farmiga in "Bates Motel")
"Why she wouldn't even harm a fly." Norma's classic quote spoken through Norman at the end of Psycho perfectly ties up everything in the groundbreaking film. More recently, Vera Farmiga has resurrected Norma Bates in the popular A&E television series "Bates Motel". Farmiga does a great job breathing life into the iconic matriarch in this television series that has viewers riveted to their TV screens to see just how things are going to work out for this strange mother-son pair.

Pamela Voorhees (Betsy Palmer in Friday the 13th)
Of course Pamela Voorhees tops this list. Pamela, the original hater of drug use and fornication amongst camp counselors, decided to take matters into her own hands to avenge the death of her boy, Jason, as the teens who were supposed to be watching him swim were screwing and smoking weed while Jason drowned. Her vengeful nature helped tie together a story that kicked off one of the longest running and most lucrative franchises in the history of horror movies. Not bad. Check out the moving tribute to Pamela Voorhees below featuring "My Immortal" by Evanescence.
