Darclight Films, the edgy genre-driven label of Arclight Films, announces the acquisition and release of first-look footage of John La Tier’s inspired directorial debut THE TELL TALE HEART starring Rose McGowan (GRINDHOUSE, TVs "CHARMED," JAWBREAKER, SCREAM), Peter Bogdanovich ("THE SOPRANOS," HUMBOLDT COUNTY, FESTIVAL IN CANNES, TVs "THE SIMPSONS") and Patrick John Flueger (FOOTLOOSE, BROTHERS, TVs "THE 4400"). Based on the classic short story of the same name penned by Edgar Allan Poe, America’s first master of horror over 150 years ago, La Tier, who also co-wrote the script, transplants the gloomy Gothic story into vibrant and enchanting modern day New Orleans. Darclight Films will be sharing never-before-seen footage in Cannes.

THE TELL TALE HEART remains true to the original insofar as the story’s protagonist is tormented by the still-beating heart of the old vulture-eyed man he murdered and buried beneath the floorboards of his residence. The film grows the tale and expands the character’s troubled mindscape to include a hauntingly romantic arc illuminated by McGowan. The filmmakers were adamant about maintaining a fervent connection to the classic and world-renowned tale’s literary roots.

“It’s arguably the seed of the entire genre,” said La Tier, who was compelled to resurrect Poe’s story albeit with a twist. Certainly Poe created a unique and starkly terrifying approach to horror fiction. He placed his readers in the minds of his mad characters and so had a way of leaving his readers feeling insane themselves. “The fear of the characters became the fear of the readers. I wanted to remain true to that while broadening the character’s psyche through the introduction of a female element to hint at the possibility of redemption, something entirely missing in Poe’s sublime version,” stated La Tier.

Moving the location of THE TELL TALE HEART to New Orleans was a stroke of inspired creativity. “I think the city is definitely a character,” said McGowan. “If there was going to be a city with a heartbeat under its floorboards, New Orleans is it.”

“The director, John La Tier, did a magnificent job of encapsulating the essence of Poe’s classic story with a modern surprise while capturing the soul of one of the most unique cities in the world,” according to Executive Producer, Joey Tufaro.

Red Sea Media is in the process of assembling a strong slate for the upcoming Marché du Film, including SQUIRRELS, a new horror-thriller that the company has just acquired international sales rights for from Bazelevs, Timur Bekmambetov’s production company. Bekmambetov is best known as director of the hit international films NIGHT WATCH, WANTED and ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER. The film was written by Daniel Antoniazzi and Ben Shiffrin, based on an idea by Bekmambetov. Lisa Ellzey and Michele Wolkoff are executive producers. The production is currently setting a director, with an A-list cast expected to sign shortly. The Red Sea sales office at the Marché du Film will be located at the Lerins venue, booth #R19. Additional sales titles from the company will be announced in the coming days.

When a young man’s estranged father is killed under suspicious circumstances, he returns home for the first time in years to get to the bottom of the mystery. Hoping to uncover some logical explanation, he instead finds his mom’s sleazy new boyfriend, a natural gas company buying up the town, an angry female sheriff who happens to be his ex-girlfriend, and an army of flesh-eating squirrels hellbent on destroying everything in their path due to an erosion of their food chain as a result of environmental destruction by the gas company.

“I am very appreciative of the opportunity to sell a Timur Bekmambetov produced film this year. Timur is a tremendous creative talent, and it’s going to be a lot of fun for everyone involved, especially for the buyers, to be a part of this exciting project,” said Red Sea Media CEO Roman Kopelevich.

Following their successful collaboration on 2 GUNS and LONE SURVIVOR, Foresight Unlimited, Envision Entertainment and Emmett/Furla Films are joining forces to produce the surreal thriller HOTEL 33, starring Oscar®-winning actor Nicolas Cage (LEAVING LAS VEGAS), it was announced today by Foresight CEO Mark Damon and Emmett/Furla’s Randall Emmett.

Foresight Unlimited will handle international sales for HOTEL 33, which will be produced by Randall Emmett and George Furla, and executive produced by Envision Entertainment’s Remington Chase, Stepan Martirosyan and Vitaly Grigoriants, and Foresight’s Mark Damon. Malek Akkad is also an executive producer on the film.

Newcomer Kellie Madison wrote the script and will direct HOTEL 33 which will start production in September 2013.

The film is based on the presumed event surrounding the disappearance of 32 people on the opening night of the Grand Hotel in Williamsport, PA in 1953. While Detective Kaminsky (Nicolas Cage) is investigating the event, four teenagers break into the now-abandoned hotel for a night of festivities. Things soon go awry, and Detective Kaminsky now has to turn his attentions to discovering the mysterious happenings surrounding the strange disappearance of two of the four teenagers.

Open Road Films is distributing the film theatrically in the U.S.

“This is a real-life mystery based on factual events -- a frighteningly look at the nature of evil, exploring and revealing timeless truths about the dark side of human nature, fear and the paranormal and will leave audiences shocked and captivated for years to come. In advance of next week's Upfront presentations by the major networks, we close out this week with word on which of ABC's two genre pilots got a new name and pickup order and which got the dreaded call saying it was a pass this time. Read on for the details.

On the "no" side is "Gothica," one that we were watching closely as it was described as a sexy Gothic soap set in the present day that weaves together a mythology incorporating the legends of Dracula, Jekyll and Hyde, Frankenstein, and Dorian Gray among others. Per Deadline, it had a good cast and some early buzz, but its premise of mixing famous horror literary characters just didn’t quite work.

On the other side of the spectrum, "Resurrection" is the new title of "The Returned," and not only is ABC moving forward with it for the 2013-2014 television season, but they also provided Examiner with the cast photo you see below.

Based on a novel by Jason Mott being released this August, the lives of the people of Arcadia are forever changed when their deceased loved ones return out of nowhere in "Resurrection," which comes from writer/executive producer Aaron Zelman with EP's JoAnn Alfano, Jon Liebman, Dede Gardner, and Jeremy Kleiner and director Charles McDougall. The series stars Omar Epps, Sam Hazeldine, Nicholas Gonzalez, Mark Hildreth, Kurtwood Smith, and Landon Gimenez.

You can put dinosaurs in just about anything and we'll watch it, which is one reason why we're sharing this first look promo for Syfy's newest Original Series, "Primeval: New World," premiering June 8th. The remaining reasons? All the other creatures that come through the anomalies with them of course! Check it out.

“Personality” was first performed by Dorothy Lamour in the 1946 film Road to Utopia. That’s not why it’s this week’s B-Sides. Being sung by a busload of human oddities in a Frank Henenlotter flick is the reason why this freakish take on “Personality” made the B-Sides.

Actress-singer Annie Ross has had a storied career that began with an “Our Gang” short and near its end saw her cast as the freak-loving “Granny Ruth” in the 1992 threequel Basket Case 3: The Progeny. A nutzoid mother hen to a gaggle of freaks similar to the franchise’s star mutant, Belial, it’s her love for these freaks of nature that leads to this amazing big band, bus-bound musical number from the most insane entry in Frank Henenlotter’s Basket Case franchise – and that’s saying something.

This scene is also a little depressing because looking at the wonderfully imaginative make-up designs on the various freaks serves as a sad reminder of modern cinema’s over-reliance on computer effects over practical effects.

Along with Ross, the flick also stars Kevin Van Hentenryck, Denise Coop, and Gil Roper.

We've seen Instruments of Good and Evil so far, and now it's time for the reveal of an Instrument of Chaos in this latest character poster for The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. Check out Godfrey Gao as Magnus Bane, the High Warlock of Brooklyn.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones is an adaptation of Cassandra Clare’s young adult fantasy novel and has a release date of August 23, 2013.

We don't have any details, but per "American Horror Story" co-creator Ryan Murphy on Twitter, two more awesomely talented actresses have signed on for Season 3 of the series, subtitled "Coven." Read on to see who'll be taking on Jessica Lange for the title of TV's biggest diva this fall!

Bassett (below left) is an Oscar nominee and Golden Globe winner for What's Love Got to Do With It? (she also won a Saturn Award for Strange Days) while LuPone (below right) has twice been nominated for an Emmy Award and is a multiple Tony winner (Evita, Gypsy). Both true powerhouses, right? We can't wait to find out more!

These two ladies will be joining the previously announced Frances Conroy, Taissa Farmiga, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Lily Rabe, Kathy Bates, Gabourey Sidibe, and Jessica Lange, who won an Emmy for her Season 1 performance.

In a move that will make a lot of "Grimm" fans happy, for the 2013-14 season NBC will be returning the show to Friday nights and pairing it with new series "Dracula." Unfortunately, the fate of "Hannibal" is still up in the air.

"Revolution" is moving to Wednesday nights, and after football and the Olympics are over, NBC will be launching "Believe" from J.J. Abrams (Sunday at 9 p.m.), which tells the story of an unlikely relationship that develops between a young girl (Johnny Sequoyah) with a gift and a man (Jake McLaughlin) sprung from prison who has been tasked with protecting her from the evildoers who covet her power. Kyle MacLachlan, Delroy Lindo, Sienna Guillory, Arian Moayed, and Jamie Chung also star.

A pick-up decision on “Hannibal” is expected in the next few weeks.

Gravitas Ventures has announced they have acquired U.S. VOD rights to JUG FACE, the tense horror-thriller that was written and directed by Chad Crawford Kinkle. The film was produced by Andrew van den Houten (Funeral Kings, The Woman) and Robert Tonino (Home Movie, Ghoul) for Modernciné and stars Lauren Ashley Carter (The Woman), Sean Bridgers (“Deadwood”), Sean Young (Blade Runner), Larry Fessenden (I Sell the Dead) and Daniel Manche (The Girl Next Door). The film was executive produced by Lucky McKee, Arrien Schiltkamp and Loren Semmens. JUG FACE won the Slamdance Grand Prize Screenwriting Award in 2011 and debuted as a Special Screening selection at this year’s festival. The film is slated for a July pre-theatrical VOD premiere, followed by a national theatrical rollout.

The deal for the U.S. VOD rights was negotiated by Gravitas Ventures' Nolan Gallagher and Andrew van den Houten, President of Modernciné.

“Modernciné is proud to be pairing with Gravitas to release this incredibly original film by Chad Crawford Kinkle. Gravitas understands how to release into the digital marketplace better than most distributors in the business. Synopsis
The pit has spoken. Dawai, the potter of a backwoods community, has crafted a face on a ceramic jug of the person that the pit wants sacrificed. Ada, pregnant with her brother’s child, has seen her face on the jug and hides it in the woods, determined to save the life of her unborn. If she does not sacrifice herself, however, the creature from the pit will kill everyone in the village until she does.

Is the water-dwelling beast known as Nessie just an old salt's tale, or could there be something real to the legend of the mythical beast? That's the question posed by the new film looking to delve into those waters of mystery.

According to Screen Daily, director James Watkins (The Woman In Black) has a joint company with Altitude, which is launching its first production, The Loch, written by Watkins and Simon Duric. Watkins was initially attached to direct, but now Duric will take the helm. Peter Mullan (pictured; War Horse, Trainspotting) has come on board to lead the cast.

“The film is a character-driven horror thriller that is an update on the Loch Ness monster myth. The story follows a family hiding their own secrets who encounter dark forces on a weekend holiday near Loch Ness.”

There's been talk of a remake of Gremlins for some time now, and it sounds like this project is now ten steps closer to happening. Read on for the latest on the remake, and pray this doesn't turn into a G-rated crapfest!

According to Bloody Disgusting, Warner Bros. is officially moving ahead with a remake of Amblin’s 1984 Gremlins instead of the long talked about sequel. The hunt is on for a director, and Seth Grahame-Smith has been tapped to produce alongside David Katzenberg. Smith wrote Dark Shadows for Tim Burton and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter for Fox. He recently completed his draft for the studio’s next Beetlejuice flick.

The original Gremlins was, of course, directed by Joe Dante.

Kevin Reilly, Chairman, Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company, today unveiled the FOX primetime slate for the 2013-2014 television season, but the only night of real interest to genre fans is Monday:

What if you suddenly woke up from the throes of death 250 years in the future to find the world is on the brink of destruction, caused by unimaginable events, and you are humanity’s last hope? Welcome to "SLEEPY HOLLOW," the thrilling new mystery-adventure drama from co-creators/executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Star Trek and Transformers franchises, “Fringe”). In this modern-day retelling of Washington Irving’s classic, ICHABOD CRANE (Tom Mison, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen) is resurrected and pulled two and a half centuries through time to unravel a mystery that dates all the way back to the founding fathers. "ALMOST HUMAN"
From Emmy Award-winning executive producer J.J. Abrams (“Fringe,” “Lost,” the Star Trek and Mission: Impossible franchises) and creator/executive producer J.H. Wyman (“Fringe,” The Mexican), comes "ALMOST HUMAN." Starring Karl Urban (Star Trek) and Michael Ealy (“Sleeper Cell,” “Common Law”), the new series is an action-packed police drama set 35 years in the future, when police officers are partnered with highly evolved human-like androids.

The year is 2048. Meet JOHN KENNEX (Urban), a cop who survived one of the most catastrophic attacks ever made against the police department. After waking up from a 17-month coma, he can’t remember much – except that his partner was killed; his girlfriend, ANNA MOORE (guest star Mekia Cox, Crazy, Stupid, Love, “Undercovers”), left him after the attack; and he lost one of his legs and is now outfitted with a highly sophisticated synthetic appendage. Suffering from depression, mental atrophy, trauma-onset OCD, PTSD, and the “psychological rejection of his synthetic body part,” John returns to work at the behest of longtime ally Captain SANDRA MALDONADO (Emmy Award nominee Lili Taylor, “Six Feet Under,” The Conjuring). By mandate, every cop must partner with a robot. And despite his passionate aversion to androids, John is paired up with a battle-ready MX-43. The casting news continues for the adaptation of the Stephen King novella from Full Dark No Stars entitled A Good Marriage as a seasoned actor has gone from destroying planets and fighting dinosaurs to one hell of a marital dispute.

Avatar and “Terra Nova” star Stephen Lang has signed up for active duty on the project. King’s story centers on a woman named Darcy (Joan Allen) who discovers the sinister and gruesome double life that her husband of 25 years (Anthony LaPaglia) and father of their two children has been living. She must now decide how far she is willing to go to maintain the marriage. Lang will play a retired investigator from the Maine Attorney General’s office who is obsessed with solving the husband's possible crimes.

King wrote the screenplay for the movie, which is being financed by independent equity. Paradigm is handling domestic rights, while Atlas International is selling foreign rights. Peter Askin, who directed the 2007 documentary about the Hollywood Blacklist and McCarthyism titled Trumbo, is on board to helm the thriller and is producing with his Reno Productions partner Will Battersby.

Every single image we see of the new RoboCop suit makes us cringe. We keep telling ourselves, "It will look better in motion. Jose Padilha can make this work!" This latest crop though? Damn. See for yourself.

Jose Padilha's film stars Joel Kinnaman as the title hero plus Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldman, Jay Baruchel, Michael Keaton, Michael Kenneth Williams, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Abbie Cornish, Aimee Garcia, and Jackie Earle Haley.

Synopsis
In RoboCop the year is 2029, and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe, and now they want to bring this technology to the home front.

Alex Murphy is a loving husband, father, and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilizes its remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life.

He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.

"Zombieland" (review here) is based on the hit Columbia Pictures movie of the same name and finds four survivors outwitting zombies and searching for a place to call home. The "Zombieland" pilot comes from the feature film’s original creative team, writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (G.I. Joe: Retaliation,"The Joe Schmo Show"), and producer Gavin Polone (“Gilmore Girls,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm”).

Eli Craig (Tucker and Dale vs. Evil) directed the pilot. It stars Kirk Ward, Tyler Ross, Maiara Walsh, Izabela Vidovic, Tim Bagley, John Casino, Kendra Fountain, Andy Dylan, T.
