Will Captain America's Chris Evans Be the Next to Join Tom Holland's The Ten O'Clock People? With Tom Holland's adaptation of Stephen King's The Ten O'Clock People currently making the sales rounds at Cannes, word has come that Chris Evans (Captain America, Snowpiercer) is in talks to replace Justin Long, who had to drop out due to a scheduling conflict.

Per Deadline, the plan is to shoot The Ten O'Clock People, an adaptation of King's short story of the same name that was first published in Nightmares and Dreamscapes in 1993, this fall in Atlanta. Holland, the 1980s horror maven who wrote and directed Fright Night and Child's Play and previously tackled King’s Thinner and The Langoliers, will direct.

The story centers on a man who, when attempting to kick his smoking habit, has his eyes opened to a frightening reality in which many people in authority are monsters. He joins a group of others like him called "The Ten O’Clock People."

Pascal Borno and Scott Karol’s Conquistador Entertainment, Holland’s Dead Rabbit Films, and E.J. Meyers (who co-wrote the script with Holland), Robin Reitman, and Nathaniel Kramer’s Making Ten O’Clock Productions will produce the film. Previously Rachel Nichols (Raze, P2, "Continuum") was in talks for the project as well, but we haven't gotten an update on that in a while.

We'll keep our eyes and ears open for more details as they come.

Gemma Arterton and Anna Kendrick Answer The VoicesDon't know how we missed this one, but better late than never, right? In any event back in April both Gemma Arterton and Anna Kendrick joined the cast of The Voices. Maybe said voices should speak up a bit next time!

Per Deadline, Arterton (pictured) and Kendrick have been set to star alongside Ryan Reynolds in The Voices, the Marjane Satrapi-directed psychological thriller that is being co-produced by 1984 Private Defense Contractors and Mandalay Vision.

Filming is about to start in Berlin from a script by Paranormal Activity 2‘s Michael R. Perry. Reynolds plays a lovable but strange bathtub factory worker who yearns for the attention of a woman in Accounting. When their relationship takes a sudden murderous turn, Jerry’s evil “talking” cat and benevolent “talking” dog lead him down a fantastical path that ultimately brings him to salvation.

Exclusive: Writer/Director Paul Soter Talks Sleepless Nights, Growing Up on Horror and More for Dark Circles

Exclusive: Writer/Director Paul Soter Talks Sleepless Nights, Growing Up on Horror and More for Dark CirclesThis week writer/director Paul Soter’s intensely creepy thriller Dark Circles (review) arrives on DVD, VOD and more courtesy of Lionsgate and After Dark Originals.

Starring Johnathon Schaech and Pell James, Dark Circles follows new parents Alex and Penny, who move to the country with their infant in hopes of a normal life and upbringing for their son, but neither of them is prepared for the consistent sleepless nights when their little one can’t sleep for more than 15 minutes, which preys on their ever-diminishing fragile mental states. As both parents begin to experience strange figures and disturbances around their house, neither can determine if what’s happening is something more sinister or if it’s just their minds playing tricks on them (cue the Geto Boys).

Dread Central recently chatted with Soter about what inspired Dark Circles, his comedic roots with Broken Lizard and much more. Check out the highlights of our exclusive interview below, and look for more on the flick later this week from co-star Schaech.

Dread Central: I thought you did a really great job of playing on a lot of familiar horror conventions in ways you wouldn’t necessarily think of at first, which I really enjoyed; what was the story process for you on Dark Circles?

Paul Soter:For me, this all started when I had my first kid a few years ago because my wife and I were in a similar situation where we were completely fucked up after not sleeping for weeks and weeks. It wasn’t until we came out of it that we realized just how out of our minds we really were during that time. The decisions we were making - man, let’s just say we were probably not great parents at all at first - and all the things that we weren’t paying attention to were just scary when you look back at those moments after everything’s said and done and realize what was really happening wasn’t at all like your own mind was perceiving it.

So when I realized all we had been through, I thought that exploring all of that within the context of a horror movie would be really interesting. I grew up loving horror movies so I wanted there to be familiar elements but presented in different ways so I appreciate you saying that because I worked really hard to make this not like every other horror movie coming out these days. I didn’t reinvent the wheel but I also didn’t want to give audiences the same movie they see all the time either so we play on perception a lot in Dark Circles so that we could keep everyone guessing.

Dread Central: I’m a huge fan of your comedy work, especially on films like Beerfest and Super Troopers- in fact, I remember seeing Beerfest a few times at the Cascade Drive-in back home in Chicago.

Paul Soter:Oh that’s so cool- I used to love going to the drive-in all the time; I think the first movie I ever saw at the drive-in was Capricorn One with my three sisters. I used to see a lot of classic horror movies there too.

Dread Central: That’s awesome- I wish more people would experience drive-ins. It’s really my favorite way to see a movie. So now, getting back to Dark Circles- because this is a story that could have easily lent itself to either horror or comedy, what made you decide to take this story in the horror direction?

Paul Soter:Yeah, when I wrote the script, I realized that the story definitely could have had a comedic conceit as well but honestly, what we had gone through hadn’t felt all that funny so I think horror just felt far more appropriate. Plus growing up, I always loved horror movies and think I was definitely a fan of those movies far before I became a fan of comedies. I guess overall I’m just way more geeky over all the genre stuff than anything else so I was excited that for Dark Circles I was able to do something I’ve always wanted to do and that was make a horror movie.

And as a fan, I really miss good, dark human storytelling in my horror movies and I feel like that’s something we don’t see a lot these days; a lot of modern horror movies have either a satirical element or they’re self-referential, but as a fan, those aren’t stories that interest me. I don’t need a horror movie to tell me how smart or aware it is- I want it to scare me, to make me think and to take the story and the characters into unexpected places. I’m a huge fan of Guillermo del Toro and he’s someone who always knows how to brilliantly tell a beautifully macabre tale that connects with audiences; that’s what my ultimate goal for Dark Circles was, and I think I hit all the notes I was hoping to for my first time making a horror movie.

Dread Central: Are you planning on continuing your career in horror then?

Paul Soter:For sure; I’ve got a few other projects I’m working on independently right now that are all in the genre realm. I’ve found that I really enjoy writing horror and have grown into loving the feeling of working independently too. When I’d be working on the Broken Lizard movies, that was a completely opposite situation where you’d show up to the writer’s room every day and you’d spend the entire day sitting around the table trying to make each other laugh, probably stoned, and see what clicks. Now I just lock myself away and get inside my own head, which is a great process too because I think you can really add your own personal touches to a project that way.

And so I’ve got two other projects that I’m currently working on - both indie - and I also recently sold a show to MTV so that’s currently being developed and explored. It’s also a horror show and it seems like they’re really embracing the genre now so it’s pretty cool to be involved with MTV on that too. I just want to keep all this momentum going forward and continue to tell stories so it’s pretty cool to me that I’ve got a few different platforms to do that in the future.

  • Lucky Bastard - Two New Clips and Artwork!

Lucky Bastard - Two New Clips and Artwork! We told you a couple of months ago that the MPAA had branded the upcoming cinéma vérité effort Lucky Bastard with the dreaded NC-17 rating, but the show must go on, right? Check out some new video goodies and the latest one-sheet right here!

    From the Press Release
Vineyard Haven, LLC, has announced the April 5, 2013, Los Angeles theatrical release of LUCKY BASTARD, a “found footage” thriller taking place behind the scenes of a porn website. The film is rated NC-17 by the Motion Picture Association of America for explicit sexual content.

LUCKY BASTARD is the directorial debut for Robert Nathan (Law & Order), the Peabody-winning, Emmy-nominated veteran writer. The film stars Don McManus (The Shawshank Redemption) as the proprietor of a website that invites fans to have sex with porn stars. Jay Paulson ("Mad Men") plays Dave, an eager young fan given a chance to have sex with the fabulous Ashley Saint, played by Betsy Rue (My Bloody Valentine). Everyone gets more than they bargained for from the seemingly mild-mannered Dave...to gruesome results.

“LUCKY BASTARD defies categorization in its blend of suspense, drama, social commentary and humor in the ‘found-footage’ format,” said Vineyard Haven’s Lukas Kendall, the film’s co-writer and executive producer. “We decided to take the film directly to audiences as it plays exceedingly well as a communal, theatrical experience.”

“LUCKY BASTARD is a mix of themes that epitomize independent filmmaking,” said Robert Nathan, also a co-writer and executive producer. “The film offers a reflective take on the deepest currents in our society: its preoccupation with sexual desire, the commoditization of sexuality, and humiliation as a product of commerce.”

The film carries the rarely used NC-17 rating. “There was a time when the most important and relevant pictures—Midnight Cowboy, A Clockwork Orange and Last Tango In Paris—were rated X, the precursor to NC-17,” said Kendall. “We have a long way to go to measure up to those masterpieces, but our society should have a place for thoughtful artistic dramas for adult audiences. Our film has less sex than the average late-night cable erotica—and no actual sex—but the rating is appropriate, and we proudly accept it.”

LUCKY BASTARD opens April 5, 2013, at Vintage Cinemas’ Los Feliz 3 Cinemas, 1822 N. Vermont Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90027.

    Synopsis
Mike (Don McManus) runs the Lucky Bastard website; Dave (Jay Paulson) is a young fan given a chance to have sex with a porn actress, and Ashley Saint (Betsy Rue) is the porn star who reluctantly agrees to participate in the website’s “have sex with a porn star” contest. In the end everyone gets more than they bargained for when the seemingly mild-mannered Dave is irrevocably transformed by his experience. When, as Ashley predicted, Dave becomes humiliated, his personality is transformed; and he seeks revenge on his tormentors. In this world, where everyone is safe within its borders, an outsider poses the ultimate danger.

A Trailer Found in a Field in EnglandThe first trailer for director Ben Wheatley's latest film, A Field in England has been released, and we have it for you right here in all of its black and white spooky glory! Check it out, and look for more on this one really soon!

    From the Press Release
Drafthouse Films, the film distribution arm of the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, announced the acquisition of North American rights to original horror film A Field in England. This is the fourth feature film from writer/director Ben Wheatley, whose credits include the highly acclaimed tour-de-force thriller Kill List, the Edgar Wright-produced 2012 Cannes Film Festival selection Sightseers, and a segment in anthology horror film The ABCs of Death. Billed as "a psychedelic trip into magic and madness," A Field in England follows a group of English Civil War soldiers in the 17th century who are captured by an alchemist and led into a vast mushroom field, where they fall victim to violent and nightmarish forces. A theatrical and VOD release is planned for 2013.

With a new feature, the 8-figure-budgeted sci-fi/action epic Freak Shift, currently in pre-production, Wheatley and producers Claire Jones & Andy Starke assembled A Field in England with financing via Film4's talent and ideas arm Film4.0 headed up by Anna Higgs. The film stars Reece Shearsmith ("The League of Gentlemen") and Kill List's Michael Smiley and features Julian Barrett ("The Mighty Boosh") in a small role.

Wheatley's work has been lauded by both critics and moviegoers, placing him at the forefront of a new wave in contemporary cinema emerging from the festival circuit dubbed "art-house horror." Chris Hewitt of Empire Magazine has proclaimed, "In only three years, Ben Wheatley has gone from unknown to one of the UK's most exciting, hilarious and most violently disturbing filmmakers."

"When we world-premiered Ben's debut feature Down Terrace at Fantastic Fest in 2009, he deservedly won top prize, the AMD Next Wave award. We knew we were witnessing the debut of a major talent," says Fantastic Fest Founder and Drafthouse Films CEO Tim League, "Ben represents the ideal filmmaker we love to support at Drafthouse Films and fully embodies our unique brand - a visionary who compounds genre themes and artfully unusual sensibilities. We are incredibly honored to be working with him to release A Field In England."

"I'm very excited to be working with Drafthouse on A Field in England. They are a great company who have released some groundbreaking films over the last few years. I went to Fantastic Fest in 2009 wanting to visit a cinema I'd read about for years (and to buy up as many Mondo posters as I was allowed to take on the plane); I came away with the start of a career. Drafthouse is a name that will always be special to me, and I'm really happy to be working side by side with them," says Wheatley.

Anna Higgs from Film 4.0 says, "One of the central strands of Film4.0 is to work with directors and producers in new and agile ways, so it's fitting that we can work with Ben, who is one of the industry's most original and exciting filmmakers. A Field in England is a brilliantly compelling story that builds on Ben's innovative work to date; I'm excited to be working with him and Rook Films to forge new paths across development, production, and distribution. So it's of course a brilliant fit that we're working with the always dynamic Drafthouse again, having released Four Lions with them in 2010."
