New Tulpa One-Sheet Shows its ScarsA brand new and kind of disturbing one-sheet for the Italian giallo-esque thriller Tulpa has hit the world weird web, and we have every scarred up pixel of it right here for your perusal. Check it out!

Tulpa will premiere at Fanta Festival in Rome on June 16th before rolling out to 100 screens across the country on June 20th. Meanwhile, at the recent Cannes Film Festival, international sales agent Jinga Films secured distribution for Tulpa in Germany, France, Scandinavia and South Korea. Tulpa will recieve its Russian premiere at the prestigious Moscow International Film Festival in June and will also premiere in Switzerland at Neuchatel Fantastic Filmfest and in Germany at Fantasy Fest. No word yet on a domestic release.

Directed by Federico Zampaglione, Tulpa (review) stars Claudia Gerini, Michele Placido, Nuot Arquint, Michela Cescon and Ennio Tozzi.

Synopsis:
Giallo returns to the Italian cinema fore in a sensational new horror thriller from spaghetti superstar Federico (SHADOW) Zampaglione. Meet Lisa Boeri, the ultimate driven professional at the top of her corporate game. But by night Lisa frequents the notorious Club Tulpa, owned by a mysterious Tibetan guru. There, unshackled from repression and guilt, Lisa will do anything with any stranger to attain a higher Zen consciousness. Suddenly her lovers start getting murdered in shocking ways. Lisa can’t go to the police because of the scandal impacting on her day job. So she tries to unmask the anonymous assassin herself… with truly nightmare consequences.

"A Tulpa is a manifestation of mental energy,"explains Zampaglione. “It's an entity that attains reality solely by the act of imagination. It’s supposed to help you, but sometimes things go wrong and it can become very sinister”.

Not content with just making Tulpa a fanboy homage, Zampaglione set out to create a "neo-giallo," bringing this iconic 70's genre into the 21st century. "We knew what worked in the genre, but we were also aware of its shortcomings, and that is why we test screened a rough cut of the film to an audience at London's FrightFest," continues Zampaglione. "We shot the film in English so we needed to gauge the response of an English speaking audience, and as a result of that screening we took the film back to the editing room and cut out 20 minutes".

Legendary Scares Up a New Director for Spectral

Legendary Scares Up a New Director for SpectralEver since Norwegian helmers Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg (Kon-Tiki) left Legendary's production of Spectral, the hunt has been on to find another director, and finally the studio has someone in its sights.

Variety reports that the studio is now in talks with commercials director Nic Mathieu to take the helm of the supernatural thriller. The script, based on a treatment by Ian Fried and with a most recent script draft by Jayson Rothwell, is being viewed as a potential franchise.

The project is centered on a modern-day, militaristic, and gritty approach to fighting the supernatural. Sources say the pitch, which sold for six figures, has been described as a darker and more serious take on a Ghostbusters-like story, with a plot that revolves around a special ops group formed to bring down evil ghosts that have taken over Manhattan.

Is Warner Bros. Releasing a Complete Friday the 13th Blu-ray Set This Year?

0
0

Is Warner Bros. Releasing a Complete Friday the 13th Blu-ray Set This Year? There’s a seven-hour Crystal Lake Memories documentary inbound this year, meaning Friday the 13th fanatics already think life is pretty sweet. But what if the good news didn’t have to end there? What if, for the first time ever, we obsessive fanatics could have it all?

And by "all" I mean every Jason Voorhees outing bundled in one bloody Blu-ray package.

For those unaware: Warner Bros. acquired the rights to 600 titles in Paramount’s back catalogue last October in a deal that went into effect on January 1st. Naturally, this got horror fans speculating as to what genre titles could hit the shelves with the Warner logo attached.

Now Warner Bros. is hinting (via their WBShop Facebook page) that a complete Friday the 13th box set could see the light of day this fall. A few months back a fan asked the WBShop where the rest of the Friday the 13th Blu-rays were, and the official response was, "There should be some news for Jason fans later in the year." Another fan dropped a similar inquiry this week, asking for a boxed release of Parts 1-8. Again, the response was interesting: "You might get that and more…"

No, this isn’t concrete news. But it’s also not very surprising. It’s no secret that the Friday the 13th franchise had done really well for Paramount on home video. The studio infamously triple-dipped the first eight titles, first in bare bones releases, then with a half-assed box set, followed by deluxe editions (which were then packaged in another embarrassing DVD-only box for the worst suckers out there). The first three films slipped onto Blu-ray to coincide with the release of the 2009 remake, but since then the trail has gone cold, presumably because Paramount no longer sees the value in cultivating HD titles for a waning marketplace.

Now that Warner Bros. owns the distribution rights to all twelve films in the franchise, a complete box set sounds like a no-brainer. And these vague social media responses seem to suggest we won’t have very long to wait.

Is Warner Bros. Releasing a Complete Friday the 13th Blu-ray Set This Year?

The Unseen Soon to Be Seen Again on Blu-ray

The Unseen Soon to Be Seen Again on Blu-rayWith so many cult titles from the Eighties and Nineties making their way to Blu-ray of late, it shouldn’t be too surprising to see a few more obscure titles also getting a digital upgrade. For example, the 1980 fright flick The Unseen. Any of you seen it?

Can’t say I’ve ever seen The Unseen. Good thing Scorpion Releasing will be putting it out on Blu-ray August 13th so I can find out what I’ve been missing.

Synopsis:
Freelance reporter Jennifer and her two friends, Karen and Vicki, accept an invitation for cheap room and board in a large farmhouse offered by a friendly, but shady museum owner named Ernest Keller since all the motels in and around town are booked for a holiday parade fair Jennifer is covering. But unknown to the women, some unseen "thing" has been living in the basement of the house for over 20 years and is looked after by Keller and his shy sister, Virginia; and the "thing" soon gets out and begins harassing and killing the women one by one in various violent, but seemingly accidental ways.

Former Bond Girl Barbara Bach and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’s Sydney Lassick are among those being terrorized by a cannibal inbred played by Stephen Furst (“Flounder” from Animal House).

The Unseen was written and directed by Danny Steinmann, who used a pseudonym after being so unhappy with the final cut of the film he demanded his name be removed. Yet, he had no problem keeping his name on Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning?

Scorpion Releasing will also soon be putting out Blu-rays of the Chuck Norris ninja favorite The Octagon and the Eighties romantic sex comedies My Chauffeur and Tomboy.

Horror fans need not feel forgotten as Scorpion has also announced plans for future Blu-ray releases of Day of the Animals, Grizzly, The Monster Club, Tower of Evil, and Human Experiments.

Fantasia 2013: Official Poster Unveiled and New Location Announced

Fantasia 2013: Official Poster Unveiled and New Location AnnouncedIf you've ever attended the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal, you know what a stellar event it is. The 2013 edition of the fest will be primarily held in a new venue this year, which is actually its old venue! Read on for the details along with a look at the official poster.

From the Press Release:
The Fantasia International Film Festival’s 17th edition will take place in the heart of Montreal from July 18 to August 6, 2013. As the Concordia Hall Theatre - Fantasia’s home base since 2003 - is undergoing extensive renovations during our dates (which will include the installation of luxurious new seating and the acquisition of a new screen and digital projector), we had to secure a different venue for our flagship screenings. We are happy to announce that for our 2013 edition, Fantasia will be returning to the theatre in which it was born - The Imperial Cinema (Centre Sandra & Leo Kolber, Salle Lucie et André Chagnon), a place we called home for our first six years, from 1996 to 2001.

Built in 1913, the Imperial Cinema is one of the most beautiful single-screen theatres in the country, a heritage house of dreams that houses over 800 seats and is located nearby the metro Place des Arts on Bleury Street, at the corner of Ste-Catherine Street.

The festival will also have screenings and events at Concordia’s J.A. de Sève Theatre and the Cinémathèque québécoise, along with special outdoor projections at the Place de la Paix (Blvd St-Laurent, between Ste-Catherine and René-Lévesque).

To design our official 2013 poster, Fantasia organized a special winter 2012 contest where the public was invited to submit their concepts and sketches. The entire Fantasia team unanimously selected a concept submitted by local film critic and event organizer Michael Ryan. In a tragic twist of fate, Michael passed away this spring at the age of 46. His work as director of the Young Cuts Film Festival inspired many, and his writing at Sound on Sight was always illuminating and a joy to read. His passing is a loss for all of us.

To bring Michael’s vision to life, long-time Fantasia illustrator Donald Caron worked his magic, delivering a striking final art jointly inspired by Greek mythology (Icarus and Daedalus) and Quebec legend of the Cheval Noir (Black Horse), the latter of which has featured prominently in the festival’s iconography over the two past editions. We dedicate our 2013 art to the memory of Michael Ryan.

Fantasia’s full lineup of titles will be announced a week before the start of the festival on July 11, alongside the release of our official program guide and the launch of our 2013 website. Between then and now, a First Wave announcement of select programming highlights will be issued.

NBC Renews Hannibal for a Second Season! And the angels sing... or scream... or whatever they do around serial killers. We just got word that NBC has given a 13-episode second-season renewal to its critically applauded drama “Hannibal.” Show NBC some love and be sure to tune in tonight!

From the Press Release:
“Hannibal” is based on the characters from the novel Red Dragon by Thomas Harris and was developed for television by Bryan Fuller, who also serves as writer and executive producer. The announcement was made by NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke.

“We’re so proud of Bryan’s vision for a show that is richly textured, psychologically complex, and very compelling,” Salke said. “There are many great stories still to be told.”

Critics have strongly embraced the series, which stars Hugh Dancy as expert criminal profiler Will Dancy, who has a unique ability to peer into the mind of serial killers. Mads Mikkelsen stars as Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a psychiatrist who is helping with the cases and, unbeknownst to Will, is also a serial killer himself. Laurence Fishburne stars as Jack Crawford, the head of the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit. Caroline Dhavernas and Hettienne Park also co-star.

Through its eight original telecasts to date, “Hannibal” is averaging a 2.0 rating, 6 share in adults 18-49, and 4.7 million viewers overall in “most current” results from Nielsen Media Research. ”Hannibal” is the youngest drama on ABC, CBS, and NBC, with a median age for its audience of 45.7. It’s also an upscale drama, indexing at a 111 among adults 18-49 living in homes with $100K+ incomes (with 100 indicating an average concentration of those homes). Additionally, “Hannibal” is heavily time-shifted, with its 18-49 rating growing by 75% going from next-day “live plus same day” ratings to “live plus seven day” results.

In addition to Fuller, Martha De Laurentiis, Jesse Alexander, Chris Brancato, Sara Colleton, Katie O’Connell, Elisa Roth, Sidonie Dumas, and Christophe Riandee also serve as executive producers. The series is produced by Gaumont International Television, Dino De Laurentiis Company, and Living Dead Guy Productions and co-commissioned internationally by Sony Pictures Television Networks.

The new season will begin no earlier than midseason.

"Hannibal" airs Thursday nights at 10pm on NBC. For more info visit "Hannibal" on NBC.com, "like""Hannibal" on Facebook, and follow "Hannibal" on Twitter.

But Hannibal (Mads Mikkelsen) intimidates the attending physician, Dr. Sutcliffe (John Benjamin Hickey), into telling Will he's okay.

Meanwhile the team doubts Will, who says, while revisiting the crime scene alone, he saw a mysterious, “dead-looking” woman (Ellen Muth) who may be involved. With his fears fed by Hannibal, Will returns to Dr. Sutcliffe for more mental health tests, when the doctor is murdered.

Fantastic Fest Announces New International Co-Production Market for Genre Films

0

Fantastic Fest Announces New International Co-Production Market for Genre FilmsBeen wanting to check out the fabulous Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas? Well, this is the year to do it as they've announced that in 2013 they will begin hosting an international co-production market for genre films called Fantastic Market|Mercado Fantastico.

From the Press Release:
The goal of the market is to connect international film projects with potential production partners, sales agents, and distributors. The inaugural market will occur in parallel with Fantastic Fest, which will be held in Austin, Texas, from September 19th through September 26th, 2013, and will highlight new genre narrative projects from across the world with a particular emphasis on Latin filmmakers from Latin America, Spain, Portugal, and the United States. Fantastic Fest lead programmer Rodney Perkins and festival director Kristen Bell are heading up the effort.

CANANA, the Mexican production and distribution outlet helmed by Gael Garcia Bernal, Diego Luna, Pablo Cruz, and Julian Levin, will co-produce Fantastic Market|Mercado Fantastico alongside filmmaker Robert Rodriguez's El Rey network. Cristina Garza, Vice President of MUNDIAL, CANANA's sales joint venture with IM Global, will source projects from the region.

"The Latin movie-going audience is the only demographic increasing in the US. Because of our proximity to Mexico and Latin America, we see a large number of emerging projects from these countries at Fantastic Fest," said Fantastic Fest co-founder and creative director Tim League. "Fantastic Market is the next step in the evolution of the festival to help us further our mission to support emerging genre filmmakers from across the globe."

"In the last few years we have seen a huge spike in the number and quality of genre films coming from Latin America," said Pablo Cruz, CANANA Partner. "We hope bringing these projects to the US marketplace will expand financing possibilities and international exposure for these emerging directors and producers."

El Rey founder Robert Rodriguez said that "establishing the Fantastic Market is a great opportunity to not only give the Ibero-American community a stage for their work in genre films, but it's also an outlet for the US Hispanic community to showcase their projects in an area where they are underserved.
