Exclusive: Death House on the Hunt to Become The Expendables of Horror

Exclusive: Death House on the Hunt to Become The Expendables of Horror - Gunnar HansenWord has come across our desk of a new project that is funded and shaping up to be completely badass. Factory Entertainment is working on a film called Death House, which is being billed as The Expendables of horror. Interested? Read on!

The script for Death House was penned by none other than the original Leatherface himself, Gunnar Hansen, and from what we hear, a cast is being put into place that's gonna be pretty damned insane. We have a list of names already attached but would rather not print 'em until the ink is dry on the proverbial paper. However, we can tease you a bit. We are talking a Captain, a hellish demon, a cornbug, a nightmare man, and even a corpse-raising mad scientist's main squeeze. Do the math.

Death House tells the tale of five psychology majors on a class trip, who find themselves sealed inside a prison with vicious rioting Neo-Nazis and the nation's most deadly serial killers, THE FOUR HORSEMEN.

A director is being sought after, and we can confirm that there's a great deal of interest in director Tobe Hooper and the great cinematographer Daniel Pearl. That's it for now, but you can expect more on this... much more... soon!

The Seen and The Unseen: Found on Mars: It Wasn't a Rock... It Was a ROCK LIZARD!

The Seen and The Unseen: Found on Mars: It Wasn't a Rock... It Was a ROCK LIZARD! Sorry, this isn't an article about an updated version of The B-52’s song "Rock Lobster." It’s about the Mars Rover and some weird pictures it took. No, really it is.

According to the blog UFO Sightings Daily, the Mars Rover took some images of rocks. While cool to us astronomy geeks, it isn’t exactly news. Mars is full of rocks. Except, one rock that may not actually be a rock. It might have been a lizard.

According to the blog, a UFO observer in Japan (is that an official title? Hmmm...) spent hours looking over photos NASA posted on its website. At first glance, the rock in one of the many photos of rocks DOES looks like a lizard. The UFO Sightings Daily believes it could either be proof of animal life on Mars or that NASA secretly launched animal life to the red planet with the Mars Rover.

Now, if you look at the picture... wait a second... that looks like... Chipper, my pet lizard that I had when I was kid!

Excuse me a second….

*Sound of Phone Dialing*

Seen and Unseen: "Mom, you told me Chipper died, but you donated him to NASA for space experiments, didn’t you??"

Mom: We never thought NASA would ACTUALLY send him to space.

*Sound of a Grown Man Crying*

Er... um... sorry... I can’t write about this anymore.

*Pours Out 40oz*

NewBev to Present Midnight Showing of The Howling on June 1st

NewBev to Present Midnight Showing of The Howling on June 1stI envy my CA friends a lot, but never more than when a 35 mm screening of a personal favorite is shown. Which means I usually spend about one weekend a month cursing my poor choice in geographical locale. CA-based Dread readers - I implore you - go see this one in my stead!

It's all going down at the New Beverly Cinema this Saturday night, June 1st, at 11:59 PM.

The Howling is one of the best horror films of the 1980s, balancing genuine scares with some of my favorite straight-faced satire of all time. Werewolves with emotional problems! Obnoxious smiley faces as a prelude to unspeakable horror! Every line of dialogue out of Dick Miller's mouth! Oh yeah, and some Rob Bottin FX work that may or may not be some of the greatest ever put onto the silver screen.

Those of you in attendance will be able to win a copy of Scream Factory's upcoming The Howling Blu-ray, well before street date! No matter what you've got going on this weekend, I'm pretty sure there's nothing else happening in CA that's this cool.

Movie fans are undoubtedly familiar with the New Beverly Cinema by now. The theater is located at 7165 West Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles, CA, one block west of La Brea. The screening of The Howling is hosted by Brian Collins. For more info visit the New Beverly Cinema website or check out Horror Movie a Day.

You can also purchase tickets right now by heading to Brown Paper Tickets.

Blumhouse and Saw Director Kevin Greutert See VisionsEver since director Kevin Greutert pulled off the impossible by making the Saw franchise relevant again after a truly horrific fifth entry that everyone considered to be the franchise's death knell, we've been curious to see what he's gonna do next.

With Jessabelle in the pipeline word has come that Greutert's next film will be called Visions, and it's to be produced by horror film powerhouse Blumhouse Productions. Variety reports that Blumhouse bought Lucas Sussman’s spec script and is aiming for a fall start.

The story, said to be in the vein of The Others and What Lies Beneath, centers on a pregnant woman moving to the wine country to be with her husband at their vineyard — a move which triggers terrifying visions.

Blumhouse recently launched a foreign sales operation at Cannes, selling Sinister 2 and comedy thriller Stretch, to be directed by Joe Carnahan. Gruetert was the editor on the first five Saw films and directed the final two.

Adam Green Talks Releasing Hatchet Trilogy as One Long Uncut Film

$

Adam Green Talks Releasing Hatchet Trilogy as One Long Uncut FilmWe've made mention of how the Hatchet movies all flow into one another seamlessly (except for the changing Marybeths, but that was for the better), and now series creator Adam Green has teased a plan regarding why that was so. Read on!

During yesterday's charity-driven marathon screening of the Hatchet films in Boston, Green revealed that "he plans to one day release the complete Hatchet trilogy as one single, epic feature film. He added the new cut would also include new sequences which were left out of the previous films, including at least one additional death scene intended for the original."

Pretty snazzy, no? Green did add, however, that with Anchor Bay owning Hatchet and Dark Skies owning Hatchet II/III, it would likely be a difficult process, but we'll keep the faith.

Thanks to Under the Gun for the scoop!

Hatchet III is set to open in New York City's Cinema Village and in Los Angeles at Laemmle Music Hall on June 14th. Opening week will feature special appearances by cast and crew, followed by Q&A's at each location. Additional cities will be announced at a later date.

Synopsis:
Danielle Harris and Kane Hodder return in Hatchet III and are joined by Zach Galligan (Gremlins), Derek Mears (Friday the 13th 2009), Caroline Williams (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), Sean Whalen (The People Under the Stairs), and others.

Hatchet III continues the tale of the now-iconic villain Victor Crowley (Kane Hodder). As a search and recovery team heads into the haunted swamp to pick up the pieces and carnage left behind from the first two films, Marybeth (Danielle Harris) hunts down the true secret to ending the voodoo curse that has left the ghost of Victor Crowley haunting and terrorizing Honey Island Swamp for decades.

The sequel, which was filmed outside of New Orleans, Louisiana, from late May to mid-June, 2012, is a co-production of MPI/Dark Sky Films and Hatchet III writer/executive producer Adam Green's Los Angeles-based ArieScope Pictures.

A Few Teasers of What's Ahead in Under the Dome

A Few Teasers of What's Ahead in Under the DomeCBS screened a first look at "Under the Dome" earlier this week, and teasers of what's ahead have been popping up online so we've compiled a Top Five list right here along with info on where you can find the rest.

Per THR's The Live Feed (be sure to click the link at the bottom of the page for more):

1. Don't call it a mini-series. While the initial run is 13 episodes, producers say there is the potential for it to continue on with a second season (and more). Neal Baer ("ER"), who noted that both "ER" and now "Law & Order: SVU" lasted for 15 seasons, is optimistic that "Dome" could follow that trajectory. "I hope it's a trend,"Baer told reporters with a laugh following the screening. He and Brian K. Vaughan ("Lost") both agree that the 13-episode format best suits this series. "It's all killer and no filler,"Vaughan said of the advantage to doing a shorter, cable-style run versus the traditional 24-episode broadcast format.

2. King's book -- which clocks in at more than 1,000 pages -- takes place over a week, with the CBS series already stretching beyond that time frame as of Episode 10. Most episodes take place over the course of a day, producers noted. Vaughan said that King has been supportive of extending the series well beyond his book, noting it might necessitate a different ending to the series. "We pitched Stephen a far-out, big-swing idea for this to go several years, a different ending, and he was really excited by it." Speaking of King, should "Dome" earn a second-season renewal, he would like to write an episode.

3. There will be answers to obvious questions almost immediately (such as why people can't just dig under the dome), and there will be death! "We have a 'Heaven Board' in the writers' room," Baer noted, adding that there's "at least one person in heaven -- maybe"so far.

4. The series isn't a post-apocalyptic drama in the way that others (i.e., "The Walking Dead") are. Instead, "Dome" will depict what happens immediately after the town is shut off from the rest of the world and what happens when people are no longer being paid for their jobs, when money in the bank is meaningless, and resources begin to be depleted. It will retain "some elements of everyday life,"Vaughan said. To that end, the point of view will largely be told from those inside the dome, keeping Chester's Mill the show's primary location.

5. There are new characters being added to CBS' take, including an interracial lesbian couple with a daughter who are driving through town and are among those trapped when the dome arrives. The goal, Baer noted, was to add a "socially relevant"storyline to the series -- which is set in Anytown USA instead of Maine, as it is in King's source material.

Synopsis:
"UNDER THE DOME" is the story of a small town that is suddenly and inexplicably sealed off from the rest of the world by an enormous transparent dome. The town’s inhabitants must deal with surviving the post-apocalyptic conditions while searching for answers to what this barrier is, where it came from, and if and when it will go away.

The 13-episode summer series will premiere June 24th on CBS. It stars Mike Vogel, Rachelle Lefevre, Dean Norris, Natalie Martinez, Britt Robertson, Alexander Koch, Colin Ford, Nicholas Strong, Jolene Purdy, Ned Bellamy, and Aisha Hinds.

"UNDER THE DOME" is produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Amblin Television. Neal Baer, Stephen King, Justin Falvey, Darryl Frank, Stacey Snider, and Brian K. Vaughan, who wrote the television adaptation, serve as executive producers. Acclaimed director Niels Arden Oplev (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) directed the first episode.

Get Creeped Out With Eyes The Horror Game

Get Creeped Out With Eyes The Horror GameEyes The Horror Game is now available for download on PC, iOS and Android devices. Players must navigate their way through a haunted house and collect money bags while avoiding the ghostly spirits within. Read on to learn more.

“Eyes” differs significantly from other typical Slender-like indie horror games. It’s gameplay is more sophisticated - proper strategy of dealing with a ghost antagonist and navigating the house is an important addition to the main goal of collecting money bags. Occurrences of paranormal phenomena in player’s surrounding (e.g., randomly moving furniture, clattering plates, tormenting moanings) may indicate the presence of the ghost in proximity, giving time to escape or hide.

Eye collectibles enable the player to share vision with the ghost for a short time and identify its position and movement, which helps in making strategic decisions. This unique gameplay mechanic enables new ways of play. Being able to see when a monster is directing straight to the player’s position can reveal an unusual kind of fear.

Game rules are flexible enough to allow different play styles depending on preferences (e.g., a dynamic, luck-based speedrun or a stealthy, cautious crawl). Both a ghost’s route and the exact location of collectibles (money bags, Eye paintings, a key to locked area) are randomized each time, providing replayability and ensuring that every session will be unique and challenging.

Difficulty can be adjusted to fit both casual and hardcore players. New features and improvements are being actively developed so users may expect frequent updates.

From the Press Release
With an incredible, eye-popping visual styling, Shelter by Survivalist Games is available now from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Shelter is a collectible card dueling game, set in a zombie graphic novel style. Playing like a hybrid of a collectible card game and the castle defense genre, Shelter offers players countless hours of addictive and challenging gameplay.

Think you have what it takes to defend yourself from the zombie onslaught? Fight to be reunited with the woman you love by defining your strategy, but be warned... You will NEED to adapt to survive.

Features

  • Deep but accessible gameplay. Easy to learn. Hard to master.

  • Integrated deck builder for deeply customizable play.
  • Graphic novel and comic inspired hand-drawn artwork.
  • Compelling story and characters.
  • Five campaign levels including a free roaming level (with more to come).

Shelter is an asymmetric single-player card game where you build a deck of dueling cards and take them into battle against a zombie deck that “plays itself”. The zombie deck is not controlled by a hideously complex AI, but plays based on a simple set of rules with dice rolls to add the element of chance. You must fight off the waves of zombies before they smash your shelter’s barricades and start munching on your brains.

You choose your survival strategy when you build your deck. Do you pack as many guns into your deck as you can? Do you use traps and reinforce your defenses? Do you stun stronger zombies and pick off the weak ones? You have the freedom to play as you want.

As you win duels, you will be rewarded with new cards to work into your deck and streamline your play style. You will also meet allies throughout the campaign whom you can take into battle with you. Each ally brings five themed cards to the table that allow you to experience different styles of play.

    From the Press Release:
The Authority is in flames. TruBlood is in short supply. As Bill comes to terms with his newfound powers after emerging reincarnated from a pool of blood, humans are in open conflict with vampires like never before. Meanwhile, Sookie and Jason must steel themselves for an encounter with their parents’ killer: the mysterious and ancient Warlow.

The Shining Girls Travel Through Time to the Big ScreenNo, sadly this has nothing to do with the incredibly spooky Grady Twins from the famed Stephen King tale The Shining. Instead what we have here is a completely different adaptation that's on its way! Read on for details.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, MRC and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way are teaming up to adapt The Shining Girls, written by Lauren Beukes and generating buzz as one of this summer’s must-reads. The two companies, however, are not aiming for a feature adaptation but rather intend to develop the project for television.

The Shining Girls doesn't come out until June 4, but it's already generating praise for its mix of historical fiction, gritty crime and sci-fi, including a favorable early review in The New York Times and strong buzz from librarians and booksellers who read early galley copies. The novel tells the story of a serial killer named Harper Curtis, who discovers a house in Depression-era Chicago that allows him to time travel through the decades. To keep traveling, he must kill “shining girls,” girls burning bright with talent and potential. One of his victims, Kirby Mazrachi, survives and teams up with an ex-homicide reporter at the Chicago Sun-Times in order to bring the killer to justice.

    More on this soon!
