Pacific Rim

Synopsis
From acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ epic sci-fi action adventure Pacific Rim.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes--a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)--who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Vincent Guastini's V.G.P. Effects Joins Blanc/Biehn's Hidden in the Woods RemakeWith filming of Blanc/Biehn Productions' remake of Hidden in the Woods set to begin July 1st in and around Houston, Texas, all the major players are lining up, and handling effects will be Vincent Guastini's V.G.P. Effects & Design Studio.

Hidden in the Woods star Michael Biehn met Guastini when they briefly worked together on Sushi Girl (in which HITW co-star Andy Mackenzie also appeared), and Biehn was so impressed with V.G.P.'s work, the producers asked Guastini to come on board and supervise with Evelyn Belmar and Vanessa Cartier. Some of Guastini's previous credits include Silent Night, ColdWater, The Devil's Carnival, Under the Bed, and Hansel & Gretel Get Baked, just to name a few.

Hidden in the Woods is a remake of the 2012 Chilean horror film of the same name. The story follows two sisters raised by their abusive father in a remote locale who must answer to their drug baron uncle when their father is imprisoned.

Michael Biehn stars alongside William Forsythe, and original director Patricio Valladares takes the helm. Jennifer Blanc-Biehn produces with Loris Curci; Hackybox Pictures recently joined the project as a producer as well. The film's co-stars include MMA fighter Krzysztof Soszynski, Chris Browning ("Sons of Anarchy,"The Book of Eli), Ricco Ross (Aliens), Jeannine Kaspar (“House of Lies,” “Nip/Tuck”), Andy Mackenzie (Sushi Girl, "True Blood"), Electra Avellan (Grindhouse, Machete Kills), Mark Burnham (Wrong, Wrong Cops), Jennifer Blanc (The Victim, Wrong Cops), and Richard Gunn (“Granite Flats,” “Dark Angel”) along with Caitlin Keats (Broken English, Kill Bill Volume 2, Treachery), Mark Gantt (The Night Visitor, Among Friends), Evie Louise Thompson (The Call, Heebie Jeebies), Nick Bateman (Hobo With a Shotgun), Cody Hackman (Tapped), Grace Powell (Jacob), Larry Carroll (Dark Horse, Jacob), Cheryl Hawker ("My Name Is Earl"), and Greg Ingram (Machete).

Box Office: This Is the End Off to a Solid Beginning

0
0

How High Did The Purge Surge at this Weekend's Box Office?Who would dare challenge the Man of Steel? How about a raunchy R-rated meta-comedy about stoner actors dealing with the end of the world? This Is the End managed to hold its own against Superman even if it did make over $100 million less.

The apocalyptic horror comedy This Is the End landed in a solid second place for the weekend behind the unstoppable juggernaut that is the new Superman movie. That’s why they opened it Wednesday rather than Friday. A $20.5 million sum looks to be its weekend total, and counting the jumpstart it got on Man of Steel, its five-day total is already around $32.8 million, according to Deadline. That’s enough to already make its budget back. A “B+” Cinemascore would indicate it might actually hang on a bit at the box office.

Not hanging on is The Purge, which is quickly being purged from the top 10. Last weekend it overperformed to the tune of $34 million, and this weekend it dropped a whopping 76%, from 1st to 5th, with about $8.2 million. Doubt you’ll hear too many complaints on their end seeing as how the $3 million pic has already more than made its budget back and guaranteed itself franchise status.

Next weekend brings us one of the biggest summer blockbuster wild cards ever in the form of World War Z. A movie based on a best-selling book that by all accounts has next to nothing in common with its source material outside of the basic premise, over a year’s worth of bad publicity regarding the film’s very troubled production, and even the positive reviews thus far have not exactly been stellar. A lot of money is riding on this PG-13 zombie spectacle so it will be very interesting to see how much of your money gets spent going to see it.

Horror Photog Joshua Hoffine Does it Again With Zombie Shoot Last Stand

Horror Photog Joshua Hoffine Does it Again With Zombie Shoot Last StandNobody does horror photography quite like the one and only Joshua Hoffine. So when we heard he released a new pic featuring a zombie attack, we had to share it with our beloved Dreadies as soon as possible!

The photo is entitled Last Stand, and it depicts exactly that, a family's final moments as their home is swarmed by an undead horde. The father in the picture is played by none other than Phantasm star A. Michael Baldwin. The picture is below with some of the details highlighted. Simply put, Hoffine scores again! Huzzah!

The cast includes Baldwin, Erica Kauffman, Sade Hoffine and Rev Mercader. The zombies were played by Bob Barber, Colin Mogg, Sonny Williams, Jen Hoffine. Brian Wendling, Davis DeRock, Henry Feltmeyer, Alice Pollack, Nathan Beggs, Dylan Thomas, Brett Johnson and Austin Goldberg. Make-up was done by "Face/Off" winner J. Anthony Kosar and "Face/Off" alum Meagan Hester with Jeffrey Sisson, Brenna Hoch and Rita Hoch

The photo is available for purchase at JoshuaHoffine.com.

From Joshua Hoffine
My star A. Michael Baldwin gave a wonderful performance! The gunshot to the head was achieved using flash paper and black powder fired through a prop head sculpted by Ryan Pintar. I then combined these elements with the kneeling zombie actor and Baldwin firing the gun on set using Photoshop. This photograph was by far my largest project to date and only came to life with the help and assistance of many wonderful people. A special thank you to all of the Kickstarter pledge supporters who made this image possible! The success of this image has encouraged me to consider future photo projects on an even larger, more elaborate scale.

Season 2 of The Inn Now Available Online

Season 2 of The Inn Now Available OnlineFans of the supernatural web series The Inn will be thrilled to know that Season 2 is now streaming online. Steve Silverman's creepy show launched its second season recently, and you can shuffle on over, check in and check it out.

Watch full episodes of The Inn at TheInnTheSeries.com. For more be sure to "like"The Inn on Facebook and follow The Inn on Twitter (@inntheseries).

From the Press Release
Steve Silverman, creator of the critically-acclaimed, award-winning Pretty, continues to surprise audiences with his Hitchcockian influenced series The Inn. Crystal Chappell, two-time Emmy winner and creator of Venice the Series, returns in the lead role of Jane, a woman on the run with more than one secret to hide. Adding to the mystery is the addition of internet sensation Mark Gantt (The Bannen Way), a man who may or may not hold the key to the truth of Jane's past.

"I’m a huge fan of Hitchcock, his style, the constant twists and turns and overall feeling of imbalance," says Silverman, "and this has been a fun departure from the kiddie pageant world of Pretty."

The Inn follows the journey of a woman whose car breaks down off the beaten path and is forced to stay at the town's local inn. The blind innkeeper, the red ball, the windows that open and close on their own, and the mystery boy who vanishes when one looks away are only a few of the mysteries she encounters. But perhaps the bigger mystery is who she really is and how this inn may be forcing her to realize it.

"The role fulfilled my dream of playing a Hitchcock girl kind of character. I'm so proud of this project," says Chappell. And likewise, Mark Gantt chimes in, "I had a blast working with Steve and Crystal on The Inn. I've been a fan of both Pretty and Venice so it's an honor to be working with them both."

Besides Chappell and Gantt, The Inn features Emmy nominee and daytime soap queen Denise Alexander, Chuck Sloan, Ray Proscia, Kyle David Pierce and Stuart Allan. Due to the amount of fan buzz building around the series, the show was recently accepted in the first ever Hot as Hell Web Series Fan Festival this summer in Palm Springs, California.

Exclusive: Zach Galligan Talks Hatchet III

0
0

Exclusive: Zach Galligan Talks Hatchet IIICo-starring in BJ McDonnell’s first directorial effort as a Southern sheriff in way over his head, Zach Galligan has seen almost everything throughout his career. But he’s never seen mosquitoes quite as big as the ones swarming across the swamplands down in Louisiana on the set of Hatchet III.

When I spoke with Zach recently, thankfully, both of us were quite comfortable and indoors.

Dread Central: I know you grew up in the New York area as a big horror fan when you were a kid. You watched the Universal monsters growing up, then basically got to act alongside them in Waxwork, and you’ve also been a part of the new breed of classic monsters with Gremlins and now Victor Crowley in Hatchet III. Would that little kid who loved Chiller Theatre be pretty impressed with how things turned out?

Zach Galligan: Well, you know, I really hadn’t thought about that progression until you put it that way and yeah, I think the little kid would be stunned at the progression. It’s almost kind of like a dream come true. It almost really doesn’t even compute or make sense. But yeah, it's cool! It’s really cool now that I think about it. Yeah, it’s funny because I remember when I was seven, my Dad’s secretary, her name was Denise, and I would go and visit my Dad at the office because he was a lawyer. Denise and I, she was a horror fan, too. And she and I would make lists of like our favorite monster movies and I can just imagine that that seven-year-old kid, if he ever had an inkling that he would make a list of horror movies that he would be in on that? He’d be pretty stunned by that.

DC: Absolutely. I wonder if you at a young age watching Hatchet III would have been a little overwhelmed, though. It’s pretty violent.

ZG: Yeah, it is pretty violent but my Mom took me to see The Godfather when I was eight, and when the horse’s head scene came along, she said, ‘Just look down, sweetheart.’

DC: Yeah, it’s definitely a far cry from Mad Monster Party, which I know that you liked growing up.

ZG: God, I loved that movie when I was like four years old, I loved that. That was basically the diet I grew up on as a child: Mad Monster Party, Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet … all that stuff.

DC: Yeah, I would like to see a claymation follow-up to Hatchet III. Maybe even Waxwork, actually, a Waxwork III in claymation with you doing the voice-over. I would watch it.

ZG: (laughs) I would love a claymation Waxwork! That would be hilarious.

DC: You’ve worked with a first-time director before (Anthony Hickox), most notably on Waxwork. Was there any concern working with a first-time director again with BJ McDonnell on this film, or do you like the energy that comes with that?

ZG: Well, you love the enthusiasm. And the thing about BJ is he’s been on so many different sets. He’s shot everything. He’s been a steady-cam operator on films like Killer Joe and Jack Reacher … Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. So many different projects that I didn’t think there was going to be the same level of intimidation of being on the set or anything like that. But, by the same token, it’s the first time that everyone looks at you and you’re in charge. Ya know, like all people, he was probably a little bit spooked the first day or two, especially when stuff started going south. Like, the second day we had this massive rainstorm that just basically got rid of three hours of shooting out of a ten-hour day. And [BJ] was there just kind of smiling, saying, ‘Yeah, we’ll make it up. We’ll be okay.’ God knows what he was thinking on the inside. But I also knew that Adam [Green] was also going to be right there ninety percent of the time so if BJ had a question, Adam would sort of go, ‘Don’t do that, do this!’. That’s a huge kind of safety net behind you.

DC: It sounds like the shoot was pretty brutal. When you were first on the set of Gremlins, did you think you would always have it that good? Did you ever find yourself on set in Hatchet III thinking what the hell did I get myself into?

ZG: Not really because moviemaking is pretty brutal; I mean, Gremlins had some brutal moments, too. The night we shot the movie theater blowing up, that was a six thirty p.m. call and we left at eight in the morning. So when you’re nineteen and you’re trying to act and remember lines at six fifteen in the morning and people are like, 'Come on, we’ve got to hurry, the sun’s coming up,' and you’re like freaking out. I mean that wasn’t very comfortable. I remember the first movie I did, too, that was called Nothing Lasts Forever, and we had to do a dawn shot outside Carnegie Hall in New York. And so my call time at the makeup trailer was four thirty a.m. so I had to wake up at three fifteen in the morning. Waking up at three fifteen in the morning when you’re seventeen years old or eighteen years old, it’s like the strangest experience. It’s so disorienting. It’s pitch black out, everything’s quiet, get in a cab and go to the set and you think, ‘What am I doing?’. And the next thing you know you’re like acting and the sun is coming up and you’re in New York City. It’s insane.

DC: Yeah, that does seem pretty unnatural.

ZG: I’m pretty used to the insanity of the film business, you know, from basically my senior year of high school.

DC: Well, you’re actually a very relatable presence on screen and there’s a certain comfort factor in seeing you perform, but the likable Zach Galligan isn’t really inHatchet III, is he?

ZG: Umm, not really because my character is basically, with the exception of the first ten seconds of seeing me, my character’s under a ridiculous amount of pressure the entire time. So, there really isn’t any kind of jocular moment to kind of be amused by anything. You look at my poor character, he’s harried at every turn. He sits down to relax for a second and then he’s off dealing with Danielle [Harris]. And then dealing with his ex-wife and then dealing with the reporters outside and then dealing with Derek Mears’ character. And then dealing with Victor Crowley. It’s just a mountain of problems for him. There’s not much for him to kind of be relatable about. The other thing, too, is that I’m playing a Southerner. I’m playing a character, I’m not playing myself like I usually do, so there’s an extra layer of detachment, you know? He looks like the guy who used to do this but he’s really not the fun, friendly guy we’re used to seeing.

DC: Yeah, it does seem like the sheriff is usually the most stressed out person in horror movies, for sure.

ZG: Well, also because the sheriff generally tends to go, even in Gremlins this happens, he always tends to go from non-believer to the, ‘Oh shit, I guess I’m forced to believe’ person.

DC: Oh, that’s a good point. Do you normally like playing against type? Are you seeking roles where you can kind of go against the kind of character you usually play, or at least the character we know the most?

ZG: Well, I’ll be honest, I’m just seeking out roles, dude. Period. Adam was just like, 'Do whatever you want to do.' That’s a lot of freedom right there. So, I didn’t want to just play me being a cop because just me being a cop from Louisiana strikes me as completely not credible, personally. Why would a guy like me who’s very East Coast be suddenly put in a position of authority down in Louisiana? I just didn’t buy it. And because I had really short notice on doing the picture, maybe like ten days, I didn’t do the Cajun accent because that’s one of the trickier ones there is. Quite honestly, it’s kind of like a Houston, Texas, kind of George W. Bush kind of an accent is what I’m doing. In fact, Caroline Williams, who’s from Houston, she was a huge help because I basically would just chat with her and mimic her. In the scenes that we do together, it kind of sounds like we’re from the same place. We were together, so we kind of fit together.

DC: Yeah, I’m actually from Austin, Texas, and every time I hear Caroline, if I closed my eyes, it would sound like my aunt.

ZG: Right, exactly.

DC: So, I’m not saying you die in this, but there are a lot of victims and the body count is heavier than ever before. Forgive me for not knowing the exact number, but how many films have you actually died in?

ZG: Good lord. A bunch. Let’s see, there’s “Surviving” and then a TV war movie in the Battle of Bull Run. So …

DC: What was your favorite death scene?

ZG: … One, two … Oh, it would have to be in “Surviving” where Molly Ringwald and I kill ourselves on screen. That was pretty good. And I die in Legion of the Dead; I get my face melted off by the mummy.

DC: Oh, that’s good.

ZG: Yeah, that’s pretty good. I die in Cut, the movie I made all in one take, that horror movie. But it didn’t a hundred percent work. I get stabbed with, like, scissors. I don’t know, half a dozen times? I believe I die in Storm Trooper. Does Carol Alt kill me? I’m the bad guy in that and the bad guys usually die.

DC: If you’re going to be killed by somebody, it might as well be Carol Alt.

ZG: That’s for sure.

DC: What do you think has been the toughest shoot of your career and why?

ZG: Well, in terms of physical discomfort, Hatchet III I would say was right up there. I would say it was probably the most uncomfortable one. The only thing that comes close is a movie I did up in Toronto called The Psychic with the lovely Catherine Mary Stewart and Michael Nouri directed by George Mihalka, who directed My Bloody Valentine, the original movie. When we were up there it was December or January. I don’t know if you’ve been to Canada during the winter …

DC: I’ve been to Vancouver but not during the winter.

ZG: Yeah, it’s fuckin’ cold. There was one scene that I was shooting with this great actor Albert Schultz. We were shooting it in a park in Toronto and it was minus ten degrees out. And it had to look like summer so we were just in sweatpants and a sweatshirt like we were jogging. And we were jogging along into the camera and then we have to stop and act like it was a tough run. We had to do one of those scenes where we’re taking some deep breaths and we’re talking for a few minutes and then we run off camera again. We probably had to shoot that from three or four different angles, and by the third setup my face was so frozen that literally my lips weren’t really working. My mouth just wouldn’t work, it was just too cold.

DC: Well, you are human, after all.

ZG: So that was a rough one, and just the swamp, it’s kind of impossible to describe it if you’ve never been there.

DC: All the insects, it’s unbelievable.

ZG: You get there and think, 'Oh, it’s not that big of a deal,' and then as night falls … clouds, clouds of mosquitoes. I’m sure you’ve played softball one time and there’s a cloud of gnats around your head or something like that, yeah they’re annoying. No, clouds of mosquitoes the size of a quarter.

DC: I’m surprised they didn’t really show up on camera and on film.

ZG: I know! You can see a few of them around Danielle a couple of times but I don’t know why.

DC: Well, of course they all wanted to be by Danielle.

ZG: Maybe she was wearing perfume or something, you know, some things attract them. If you watch, there’s a lot of movement, so when you’re moving they would kind of move away from you and they would be much more to the crew members on the outside that weren’t really moving. They would sort of settle around you. And certainly with the gunfire it kept them away, no question about it. We would fire all those weapons and the noise … you really remembered you were in the swamp because the noise from the automatic weapons going off, the ground would tremble. It was incredible. The only thing I can compare it to was that scene in Gremlins where the gremlin jumps into the pool and the water sort of erupts, that sequence they put liquid nitrogen in. They pumped liquid nitrogen into the swimming pool and it creates a really violent chemical reaction. And when they did that the entire pool, the whole ground, it felt like there was an earthquake. The entire ground was shaking from the violence of the chemical reaction.

DC: I’m sure they weren’t expecting that.

ZG: They didn’t think it was gonna tremble quite that much!

DC: So, what’s next for you? Maybe an acting gig on a tropical island somewhere?

ZG: (Laughs) I’d be happy doing 12 Angry Men where I’m just in an air-conditioned jury room. I would be thrilled.

DC: I would watch that, too.

The sequel, which was filmed outside of New Orleans, Louisiana, from late May to mid-June, 2012, is a co-production of MPI/Dark Sky Films and Hatchet III writer/executive producer Adam Green's Los Angeles-based ArieScope Pictures.

Exclusive: Writer/Director Peter Strickland Discusses Berberian Sound Studio and More

Exclusive: Writer/Director Peter Strickland Discusses Berberian Sound Studio and MoreOut now in limited release and on VOD is writer/director Peter Strickland’s Berberian Sound Studio, a haunting exploration of isolation and loneliness set against the backdrop of a Giallo movie, which stars veteran actor Toby Jones (Captain America).

Dread Central recently chatted with Strickland exclusively about what inspired Berberian Sound Studio, how creating a story about sound design challenged him as a filmmaker and much more. Berberian Sound Studio is now playing at the IFC Center in New York and in Los Angeles at the Arena Cinema in Hollywood and Downtown Independent in Downtown LA. For those of you not in those areas, the film is also currently now available on VOD.

Dread Central: Thanks for chatting with me today, Peter; I thought this was an incredibly fascinating film and definitely a very unusual story as well. What inspired you to create a story around a sound engineer and Giallo films, of all things?

Peter Strickland:Oh, thanks so much; I think for me I was interested in capturing the mechanics of exploitation cinema. I think part of that comes from my fascination with DVD extras and so I wanted to make a movie that circled around that kind of world but make it a little more fictionalized and, of course, entertaining. I think what was most powerful to me was this ridiculous image of a grown man smashing watermelons with this horribly violent movie playing behind him; I wanted this movie to exist in that kind of confusion and explore the power of violence but not in a didactic way.

Another reason I made Berberian Sound Studio is that I wanted to show just how complex the idea of movie violence really is and reduced that idea down to only the sound. At the same time, I wanted to create a very visual movie about the world of sound, something I don’t think I had seen before; I also wanted to pay tribute to this incredible time period in cinema in particular because there has always been a strong connection between Giallo films and their music and sound design. People really tend to forget that Giallo films created an amazing link between high-art concepts and b-movie exploitation, which is endlessly fascinating to me.

Dread Central: I would definitely say a lot of that certainly plays into Toby’s character, and it’s very compelling to see just how affected by this world he becomes; can you discuss collaborating with him for this role and how the two of approached Gilderoy and his downward spiral throughout the film?

Peter Strickland:Toby was wonderful and added so much to this character- I mean, of course I knew he would, but it was beyond anything I could have initially hoped for while I was writing the script. I just thought it would be interesting to see how someone who has no frame of reference for this world would react to being suddenly immersed in it; what does that do to his psyche and how does it parlay into his own feelings of isolation being in a world he knows nothing about?

And Toby really embraced that and I definitely think that’s why the movie works so well; you just cannot take your eyes off of Toby, who in turn cannot take his attention away from this world he’s suddenly been put in the middle of and can’t relate to at all. He's used to working on children’s stories so Italian horror movies, to him, are utterly shocking and almost a bit maddening. A lot of what you see in the final film was in the script, but of course Toby managed to work in certain elements of this character that only he could, and I couldn’t be happier with the way it turned out and with my experiences working with him on this movie.

Dread Central: Because you’re making a movie that’s focused on sound design, did that add any pressure on you in terms of creating the perfect sound mix or incorporating the right sound design elements you needed for Berberian Sound Studio?

Peter Strickland:I think that for me the element I was most emphatic over was the sound perspective and just how a voice sounds in one shot and how that same sound or sentence will travel to someone’s headphones. Keeping the sound consistent throughout was really the biggest challenge- we wanted everything you were hearing to feel authentic, even during the moments where maybe we were amplifying certain sounds for dramatic effect. The biggest temptation for me was to just ‘go crazy’ with it during the mixing process because we actually had a great budget allotted for sound, but then I thought better of it. That wouldn’t have added anything to the movie at all so we really just concentrated on those tangible sounds - hearing what you’re actually seeing - and getting them to seamlessly integrate into the rest of the sound mix.

Dread Central: As someone who grew up during the 80’s, I have to say it was nice to see someone celebrate classic filmmaking, and I thought the studio itself was very visual striking- particularly the scene where Toby has the loops of tape spooled and hung throughout the studio.

Peter Strickland:Oh thanks- I love that scene; it really reflects the cyclical nature of the script and it’s by far one of my favorite visual moments from the film. I think that one of the main reasons I wanted to write about analog sound is because it WAS so incredibly visual both in terms of the machinery and the performance aspect of splicing tape and looping it. When you look at those old control rooms, they do have a very powerful, almost otherworldly feel to them- there are the racks full of oscillators and filters and all of that. There’s almost a ritualistic and mysterious quality to everything you see in those rooms, and Berberian Sound Studio is a celebration of just that. I wish more people could appreciate the artfulness to filmmaking in that era.

Toby Jones and Tonia Sotiropoulou star. Check out our Berberian Sound Studio review here.

Set in 1976: Gilderoy is hired to orchestrate the sound mix for the latest film by Italian horror maestro Santini. As time and realities shift, Gilderoy is lost in a spiral of sonic and personal mayhem and has to confront his own demons in order to stay afloat.

E3 2013: Dying Light Demo Impressions

0

E3 2013: Dying Light Demo ImpressionsWhile at the 2013 E3 I hit a demo for Techland's upcoming survival horror game Dying Light. Due to the over-saturation and decline of quality in the zombie game genre, admittedly I was a little gun-shy walking into the private demo and fully expected to either yawn or roll my eyes in disdain.

Then I remembered these were the guys who brought us the Dead Island franchise… which is when I got a little giddy.

As soon as the lights went down, it was all business in this survival horror FPS set in a dangerous open world overrun by a massive outbreak.

During the day, you're scavenging for supplies and creating makeshift weapons to defend yourself not only from zombies but something much more treacherous in what's known as a "viral". Virals are just as dangerous because until they fully turn, they still have the power of speech and therefore can lure you to your doom with two simple words: "help me."

Guided by an unseen voice known as Jade, the player (locked in the quarantine zone for the last two months) now has to make his way to the safe house before sundown… as that's when the REALLY dangerous characters come out. And when I say "dangerous," I mean DANGEROUS - as in there's no WAY you'll be able to survive against some of the freaks that only come out at night… but I'll get into that in a minute.

Side quests are encouraged and interactions with NPCs can affect whether you live or die. Nothing is guaranteed once you hit the supply drop, as demonstrated in the demo when we came upon a group of looters with machine guns going through the supplies. They drew their weapons, and the protagonist put up his hands and walked away; however, they could've just shot for fun; the outcome is never the same.

As the sun quickly drops and he nears the second supply drop, Jade tells him to move his ass because even with awesome custom-craft weapons (like an electrified machete), if he's out there after dark, he's fucked.

Dying Light

Dying Light

And just like that, it's night and the "slow-biters" are joined by a really bad number known as a "volatile," a severely giant, FAST, mutated zombie that would make even the hardest guy around piss his pants at the mere sight.

The volatile are no joke as you see a car fly at you out of nowhere, and unlike the Tanks from Left 4 Dead, you can't defeat them (nor are you meant to); your job is to AVOID them at all costs. But as you're totally able to free run in this game, you have a SLIGHT advantage in being able to leap between buildings and run up walls in order to not only ambush enemies but also save your ass in a pinch.

If trapped out in the open after dark, using a radar known as "the pulse" will help you figure out if said volatiles are in the area. If you send out a ping and a red flash appears, move your ass to higher ground or hide someplace safe because if a volatile sees you, chances are you'll be nice and dead within minutes… which is precisely what happened to our guy in the demo.

It's been a VERY long time since I've been creeped out by a zombie game; I remember my breathing and heart rate rising every time I'd hear that collective "RAAAAAAAARRRRRR" that would occur right before a zombie horde attack in Left 4 Dead and being scared shitless waiting for them to get in close enough range for pipe bombs and the like. I never thought I'd feel that again, but Dying Light has brought back the fear. Once night fell and the faster zombs came out to play, I nearly cried "HOLY FUCK" when I saw the car fly past my line of sight. When the volatile (who resembled 2 Victor Crowleys stacked on top of each other wearing a Tron-like suit) came into view, I couldn't help breathing quickly out of panic as our character hid in-between two crates as the MASSIVE beast passed close by and nearly yelled when it was upon us about to rip our face off.

And with that, the demo sadly ended… but with massive amounts of brutal melee and range-combat weapons (light and heavy weapons like knives, bats, axes, sledgehammers, guns) and more complex and tasty items like the aforementioned electrified machete (I HIGHLY recommend beheading as many as you can) that make taking out these jerks super fun.

I also recommend playing this with the lights off and the sound cranked (or headsets so your neighbors won't hate you or think you're being murdered).

And like the game says, "Good Night. Good Luck."
