Official Seed 2 Poster Holds You at KnifepointHave you ever seen Uwe Boll's weirdo slasher flick Seed? Better yet, have you even heard of it? It doesn't matter. Do you remember a couple of weeks ago when we announced a sequel was coming? You either have a short memory or are blocking.

Either way, check out the first official one-sheet for Seed 2 below.

Dr. Boll will be serving as producer on this one with Marcel Walz directing. Caroline Williams, Christa Campbell, Nick Principe, Jared Demetri Luciano, Manoush, Natalie Scheetz, Annika Strauss, and Sarah Hayden star.

Plot details are currently under wraps, but we'd expect lots of hammering, slicing, dicing, screaming, and all around general mayhem. You gotta like that, right? That's just how these movies roll. In the first 2007 film, a seemingly undead man is bound and buried alive but digs himself back to the surface and seeks bloody vengeance on those who caused his suffering.

More soon!

Joe Lynch Talks Holliston and More - Part 1

Joe Lynch Talks Holliston, Knights of Badassdom and More!If you've been following along with our "Holliston" interview series, you've read our conversations with Adam Green, Corri English and Laura Ortiz. Today we bring you an exclusive, and very personal, interview with the hilarious Joe Lynch.

You can follow these links to check out our previous interviews with Adam Green (Part 1 here and Part 2 here) and Corri English and Laura Ortiz. Now enjoy Joe Lynch as he talks about "Holliston" and his upcoming project Everly along with few other tasty tidbits.

We asked Joe about the increased confidence the cast of "Holliston" seems to have gained in Season 2. "That seems to be the word of the day for our season: confidence," Lynch said. "Since we've been promoting it in March, Adam's brought it up, I've brought it up. People who have seen the episodes so far, including the Christmas Episode, have mentioned confidence, and we didn't see that at the time because we shot the Christmas Episode kind of in the middle of all the other episodes for Season 2 so that was in the middle of the schedule. It wasn't done in between Seasons 1 and 2, it was kind of glommed on with Season 2. So, at the time, I don't think any of us were like, 'Is your confidence great? Wow, mine's doing great!' It was just a level of comfortability that all of us had."

And that confidence has led to a series of episodes that is even more impressive than the wildly entertaining Season 1. "We knew it was working," Lynch said. "Obviously it was working because we got a Season 2… or there was a major clerical error on someone's part at FEARnet. When we got Season 2, I was like, 'Oh God, please don't let this be a moment like when Marisa Tomei was named Best Supporting Actress at the Academy Awards by Jack Palance, mistakenly. Like, 'Oh yeah, you guys got a Season 2… Oh wait, that was "Todd and the Book of Pure Evil"…ooohhh noooo!' We were hoping that wouldn't happen, but then we were on that set again after the first season, and we were told from the beginning for the second season that they wanted the episodes to be shorter so they could fill ad space because the difference between last season and this season was that they actually have commercials they could put on, instead of infomercial type shows with old ladies falling down."

And getting back into the "Holliston" world was simply the best feeling for this cast and crew. It proved that this experimental program was working. "There just was this level of relaxed comfortability without worrying about, 'Is this going to work?'" Lynch said. "But the fact that we were back for Season 2, and that pressure was off us, I think was a testament that it was working. Pressure is always a good thing. It's always good not to be sitting on our laurels with a lobster roll and a cup of tea going, 'Oh this stuff just writes and acts itself out!' No, it's a lot of hard work, but we just knew it worked and it paid off. And in the new season we're just comfortable in our characters' skin, and I think that resonates."

Even though "Holliston" feels like it's shot completely off the cuff, Lynch credits the long hours of rehearsals to the show's flow. "Most productions, whether it be film or television or web series, even if you're a musician, you don't always get a lot of time to be in the same room with each other because everyone's got conflicting schedules. But the fact is Adam's been able to wrangle us all together over the past two summers and say, 'Guys, if we're going to do this, we've got to come prepared and get up on that stage guns blazing.' The only way we were going to be able to do that is rehearse practically every day. We rehearsed like it was a stage play. Most TV shows, most movies, never get rehearsals at all. I had to fight for rehearsal time for my last movie…fight for it! And they were like, 'You don't need rehearsal time. It can be discovered on the day.' And I was like, 'That's the reason we don't make our dates, because we're discovering it on the day!' These same producers come and ask you, 'Why aren't we done yet?' Because we didn't have rehearsal time, schmuck! Because we have that rehearsal time, we are literally able to walk on that stage and bang out 11 pages at once."

The rehearsal schedule was indeed rigorous, but effective. "By doing these rehearsal days that were sometimes three days a week, sometimes four, sometimes even five days a week, we would either have a get-together during the day or a get-together at night and rehearse these scenes," Lynch said. "But also, Adam would take us to dinner one night or we'd get sushi or we'd go to the movies. We'd just hang out. And there was a comfortability because we weren't just actors on a set; we're friends. It's all for one and one for all, and we all knew that. The more we can have this family environment, the better the show is going to be."

So the obvious question is, since "Holliston" seems so natural and partially ad-libbed but is rigorously rehearsed, how much of what we're seeing is actually on-the-fly humor and how much is prepared? "The rehearsal process, that's where some of the funniest jokes come from," Lynch said. "There would be no Market Basket joke [otherwise] because that was a joke that was born completely out of rehearsals. And that happened a lot. We were always coming up with 'What if I say this?' or 'What if I did this?' That comfortability with Adam and the whole group. There was never a moment of 'Should I tell him? Shouldn't I tell him?' There was a fearlessness to it and the environment Adam created was a completely collaborative process. But also on the set, because we knew our lines, because we move so fast, because we were comfortable in our characters, everybody got moments of ad-libbing in there. Because the rhythms were so organic and they weren't forced and there wasn't this David Mamet-esque need to fit every 'um' and 'uh' and every beat. It was very loose."

Lynch brings up a specific ad-lib moment from Season 2 that resonated with him. "We always had something like Laura saying the smallest little thing between the lines or, for example, this season Adam and I go to the hospital to find out if the person who bit Corri is actually a werewolf. It's our werewolf episode, our homage to An American Werewolf in London. And, of course, who ends up being the guy, but David Naughton from An American Werewolf in London. So we're trying to figure him out, and at one point he kinda gets the drop on us and goes, 'Hey guys, look! Doctor Giggles is over there.' We look over and, of course, that's the moment he gets to run away. And Adam goes, 'No, he's not' and I go, 'The doctor is not insane.' Now if you know Doctor Giggles and you know the movie poster, you would get the joke. It was just one of those things that came out of my mouth, and when it did I went, 'That is something Joe would totally say.' It was easy for us to be able to throw out moments like that all the time, mostly because Adam and I, all four of us actually, were always trying to crack each other up. We know the lines so well that whenever we were able to do something a little different it was a gift. But that's also not to say that everything wasn't rigorously scripted by Adam."

Fans of "Holliston" are certainly drawn to the show, not only for the humor and the story, but the realism of the environment. That's a strange statement for a show that regularly features a toy cat and closet-dwelling alien, but the way the cast interacts with each other certainly rings true. "I think that comes down to two factors," Lynch said. "One is that we're obviously playing variants of ourselves. Although what's weird is Adam wrote these characters who are variations of who we are, or gross amalgamations of who we are. Like, I was never this cheap, but since I've been playing Joe, I've become increasingly cheaper. I'm the one who's watering down the milk now and saying to my wife, 'Do you really need that side of pie?' Or Laura, who's this beautiful, petite little thing... since Laura has this insatiable hunger on the show, she's eating all the time now. She's just devouring everything. I don't know where it goes. Her constitution must be immaculate. But all of us have started to take on traits of our characters. I think that's just part of the fact that we are who our characters are and our characters are becoming us."

Look for Part 2 of our interview with Lynch tomorrow!

Deadpool Adds Rogue, Psylocke and Domino to the Roster

Deadpool Adds Rogue, Psylocke and Domino To The RosterDeadpool will release on June 25th for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Players will step into the shoes of the one and only Deadpool, who has announced that he will be adding a few lovely ladies to his roster including Rogue, Psylocke, Domino and Wolverine?!

From the Press Release
So when it came to assembling the cast of super-strong heroes and weirdoes that were going to appear in my new game, DEADPOOL, from Activision Publishing, Inc., and Marvel Entertainment, I went through binders of men and women (heh…you…you guys remember that? That guy who did that?) to build the most genderfully diverse roster of freaks in spandex you’ve ever seen. I’ve recruited some of the most powerful, intelligent, lovely ladies from the Marvelverse for this game: Psylocke. Domino. Wolverine. The list goes on.

And uhh – heh – a certain catch du jour you may have heard of by the name of Rogue? The Southern belle with the kicks from Hell will be MY contractually obligated co-star!

Mmmmmm – check, please!

Okay. Play it cool, Pool. Gotta think of a really awesome line to impress a Southern lady this classy and elegant. “Hey there, sugah… I hear you absorb powers. Well, you've certainly absorbed my affection!” No? Hmm…what about “How would you like to join Domino and Psylocke as the inaugural class of Deadpool’s School for Gifted Making Out?” and then I just stare deeply into her eyes for like 15 minutes in silence? Wait, okay, what if I was just like “Damn, girl, you must be Rogue, because you're sucking the life out of me…” NO! Okay, well, if we break up that'll be good, but…

GUH! This is difficult! Only now do I understand your burden, everyone on a reality dating show. You – you are the real heroes.

DEADPOOL will be available for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on June 25, 2013 in North America and is rated M (Mature) by the ESRB.

Exclusive: Jason Eisener Discusses His Alien Abduction Slumber Party for V/H/S/2 and More

Exclusive: Jason Eisener Discusses His Alien Abduction Slumber Party for V/H/S/2 and MoreOne of the highlights of V/H/S/2 for this writer had to be Jason Eisener’s “Alien Abduction Slumber Party,” which follows a group of pre-teens who must fight off malicious aliens who aren’t looking for any sleepover buddies- just victims.

Dread Central recently chatted with Eisener (Hobo with a Shotgun) about his segment (which was shot from the POV of his pooch), and we’ve got the highlights right here. Read on for our exclusive interview with Eisener, and look for V/H/S/2 (review)in limited theaters this July (the sequel is currently available everywhere on VOD).

Dread Central: Great to chat with you again, Jason. I loved the energy in “Alien Abduction Slumber Party”- it absolutely feels like it has your filmmaking sensibilities all over it. What inspired you to go the alien route for this?

Jason Eisener:I went with aliens because I really wanted to make that kind of a movie from a kid’s perspective; I think that was my biggest fear as a kid- being chased by aliens. I used to have nightmares about aliens coming into my home and trying to abduct me and my friends, and I used those nightmares as my inspiration on this. I think a lot of it has to do with Fire in the Sky- that movie completely freaked me out as a kid to the point where I was even sleeping with a baseball bat under my bed for a few years.

But I’m a huge fan of movies like The Goonies and The Monster Squad so I’ve always wanted to do something in that world, and V/H/S/2 was a great opportunity to do just that but on a smaller scale.

Dread Central: Had you been a big fan of the original V/H/S when you were approached about the sequel?

Jason Eisener:Definitely; I thought it was so energetic and creative in its use of its perspective; plus they managed to find a way to do something different with the idea of found footage so I thought it would be a really interesting challenge to become involved and do something I was really passionate about. I’m thrilled they asked me to be a part of it because everyone involved has really been so cool.

Dread Central: I think it’s really interesting because a lot of filmmakers are told early on that to make things easier, never shoot with kids or animals, and for “Slumber Party” you not only use both, but they’re pretty much the primary focus of your entire story. How difficult was it managing everything while shooting then?

Jason Eisener:Yeah, it was kind of tough; we only had like four days to shoot everything and only a few days before to prep for it. And it was even more interesting for me because none of the kids we used in “Alien Abduction Slumber Party” had ever acted before except for the main kid, but they all had that kind of raw energy we were looking for that also reminded me of how my friend and I were as kids so they all did great. I think the hardest part for them was ignoring the crew; sometimes we’d come up with an idea and run away from everyone so they could go off and shoot what they wanted to shoot. A lot of those shots ended up being some of my favorite moments in the film.

Dread Central: I wanted to ask you about the sleeping bag shot, which was just badass; how’d you guys pull that off?

Jason Eisener:Oh yeah, that was the last shot we did on this; we basically had the bag in a kiddie pool with the kid inside, and so when we’d start shooting, it would be myself and a few others outside shaking the bag around like crazy. His dad was there, but the police showed up at one point; I think a bunch of grown men shaking a kid in a sleeping bag immersed in water probably looked really bad when they showed up where we were filming. Thankfully his dad explained everything (laughs).

V/H/S/2 is produced by The Collective, Salient Media, and Brad Miska and Tom Owen’s Bloody Disgusting. Simon Barrett, Adam Wingard, Edúardo Sanchez, Gregg Hale, Timo Tjahjanto, Gareth Huw Evans, and Jason Eisener all directed entries in this latest anthology. The cast includes Adam Wingard, Lawrence Levine, L.C Holt, Kelsy Abbott, and Hannah Hughes.

The Seen and The Unseen - Nessie Tourism Hooligans Ready to Rumble! You’ve heard of football louts, baseball bums and soccer hooligans disrupting local bars. It’s a pretty common thing in the sports world. The real question is: Will we soon see the worst of the lot, Nessie Lover Nobs?

In an article from The Scotsman, the Drumnadrochit Chamber of Commerce is being torn apart by resignations, back stabbings and outright name calling. The big issue? Whether Nessie should be assumed to exist during local tours or just be described as a colorful local “legend”.

Apparently, one side of the council favors telling tourists Nessie is a full-fledged monster mystery while the others want to focus more on the history of the surrounding area.

My advice to the Scots? They need to remember this age old wisdom from the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups commercial: “Let’s put chocolate together with the peanut butter!

Oh, Reese’s, when will the world take your beautiful advice to heart?

Over a Dozen New Stills from Riddick Rule the DarkLots of new photos from the upcoming R-rated Riddick flick have made their way to the Internet thanks to their amazing ability to see in the dark and the mythical download button we utilize whenever we can. Check 'em out here.

Riddick stars Vin Diesel and is based on a script by David Twohy, who wrote both Chronicles of Riddick and Pitch Black, where he first created the character of Riddick.

Joining Diesel are a returning Karl Urban (Star Trek) as Vaako; Jordi Molla as Santana, the arrogant captain of the mercenary ship; Matt Nable (Killer Elite) as Boss Johns, a man looking for answers; Katee Sackhoff (TV's "Battlestar Galactica") as the Nordic mercenary Dahl; and Bokeem Woodbine (Total Recall) as bounty hunter Moss. Rounding out the cast are Dave Bautista (The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption), Conrad Pla (Immortals), Raoul Trujillo (Apocalypto), Nolan Funk (Aliens in America), and two-time Grammy Award-nominated singer Keri Hilson.

Synopsis:
Riddick, the latest chapter of the groundbreaking saga that began with 2000’s hit sci-fi film Pitch Black and 2004’s The Chronicles of Riddick reunites writer/director David Twohy (A Perfect Getaway, The Fugitive) and star Vin Diesel (the Fast and Furious franchise, xXx). Diesel reprises his role as the antihero Riddick, a dangerous, escaped convict wanted by every bounty hunter in the known galaxy.

The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty.

The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won’t leave the planet without Riddick’s head as their trophy.

Universal Pictures'R.I.P.D. stars Ryan Reynolds, Jeff Bridges, Kevin Bacon, Stephanie Szostak, Mary-Louise Parker, Marisa Miller, Mike O'Malley, James Hong, Tobias Segal, and Robert Knepper.

Robert Schwentke directed the project, which follows a murdered cop (Reynolds) who is recruited to work in the Rest in Peace Department, a police force comprised of ghosts who battle spirits unready to depart this world. Jeff Bridges plays Reynolds' ghostly partner.

Universal Pictures' supernatural farce has been scheduled for July 19, 2013.

Synopsis
Nick is dead — at least, that’s how he remembers it — and teams up with another deceased detective, a gunslinger from the Old West (played by Jeff Bridges), to work for an elite task force, the Rest In Peace Department (hence the title), to track down the dead on Earth. (Due to overpopulation, some unsettled spirits haven’t gone where they’re supposed to and are hiding out). Technically, R.I.P.D. officers (who are overseen by Mary-Louise Parker) aren’t allowed to kill anyone living and aren’t supposed to interact with anyone from their previous lives, but Nick is haunted by the fact that he was murdered by another cop (played by Kevin Bacon) and can’t let it go.

Locke & Key Now Heading to the Big Screen via UniversalAfter being teased with a TV adaptation of the popular comic Locke & Key that failed to materialize beyond a pilot, word has now come that Universal has picked it up to develop as a feature film.

Per THR's Heat Vision Blog, Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, and Bobby Cohen will produce via their Universal-based K/O Paper Products banner. Ted Adams, the CEO and publisher of IDW Publishing, the company behind the comic, will also produce.

Written by Joe Hill and featuring astounding artwork from Gabriel Rodriguez, Locke & Key tells of Keyhouse, an unlikely New England mansion, with fantastic doors that transform all who dare to walk through them.... and home to a hate-filled and relentless creature that will not rest until it forces open the most terrible door of them all...

Hollywood has been trying to adapt Locke & Key for several years now. Dimension had the screen rights initially, and when they lapsed in 2010, Kurtzman and Orci, the superstar writers whose work includes Star Trek, Transformers, and "Fringe," jumped in. The property then became a Fox TV series produced by DreamWorks TV and K/O Paper Products, but Fox ultimately passed on it. The producers tried to shop it around, but budgetary constraints were an issue. The hope now is that the feature film model will give the story the ample canvas it needs.

Executive VP of Production Jon Mone and Creative Executive Jay Polidoro will oversee the project for Universal, while Ben Kim will handle development for K/O Paper Products.

Look for more soon!

From the Press Release
Top illustrator Graham Humphreys, who has been FrightFest’s poster designer since the very beginning in 2000, has revealed the artwork for FrightFest 2013.

Graham said today: "This year's image plays with the skull of Yorick in a parody of Hamlet and all the attendant themes of revenge, murder, ghosts and corruption. The death of celluloid is represented by the corpse in the director's chair and the spools for brains. As it is the centennial year of Peter Cushing's birth, his contribution to the genre is honoured with a bust, and the passing of Ray Harryhausen is remembered with a glimpse of two of his creations”.

Film4 FrightFest, the UK’s biggest genre film festival, runs from Thursday 22 August to Monday 26 August at the Empire Cinema, Leicester Square. The full lineup will be announced on 28 June. Festival and day passes go on sale from 29 June. Tickets for individual films are on sale from 27 July.

  • Exclusive: Bruce Campbell Talks Evil Dead on Blu-ray and Evil Dead 4 / Army of Darkness 2

Exclusive: Bruce Campbell Talks Evil Dead on Blu-ray and Evil Dead 4 / Army of Darkness 2With the release of Evil Dead on Blu-ray and DVD looming we got a chance to catch up with franchise icon Bruce Campbell who spoke about the home video release as well as potential sequels to the remake. Read on for the whole enchilada straight from the chin himself!

    J. Blake: I’m curious to know what you think a young Bruce Campbell, circa 1978/79, would’ve thought if he was told that 35 years later he’d be producing a remake of Evil Dead and Sam (Raimi) would be directing an epic prequel to The Wizard of Oz.

Bruce Campbell: I think that guy would say, “Fuckin’ eh!” (we laugh) It was our first movie. It took us four years to finish it and it didn’t take off right away. So we didn’t know if this was a one shot deal. You know making a movie; if you fail with that one shot…we certainly would’ve failed with our investors in Detroit if it had failed. So we didn’t even know. No we couldn’t have known. We thought we were lucky to make that one movie, just to finish it and get it in a theater. So I guess it is all a bonus. It’s all downhill from there.

JB: I don’t think a lot of people realize that in addition to being the star, you were also one of the producers of the Evil Dead films. How did your role as producer for the new remake compare to what you did on the original series?

BC: Well now that we all have day jobs -- Sam was making Oz when we were doing the remake. Rob Tapert was finishing up with Spartacus and I was in my sixth season of "Burn Notice," which is seven months out of my life. So we tag teamed it. You know you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do to get it made. Rob oversaw the nuts and bolts of production. That’s why we did it in New Zealand, because he’s based out of there. They have excellent crews there; just topnotch people. Between Hercules, Xena and Lord of the Rings, as well as other shows, you have an industry there. So Rob did that part and then I’m a big fan of post (production), of editing and sound and all that. So when the season of Burn Notice ended, I hung out in L.A. right at the time when they were taking care of that business. So that’s when I jumped in and Rob backed off a little bit. And Sam (Raimi) is the grand poobah. He’s involved in all the editing decisions and the look of the movie and the sound of the movie. So he’s not distant from it, but you know he’s making these gigantic epics. So he’s not going to micro-manage. And he's very pro-director. I think Fede Alvarez (the director of the Evil Dead remake), if he works with other producers one day, I think he’s going to go, “Wow those guys were pretty good actually!” We rarely got in his face…only a couple of times.

JB: Judging from what is listed as the “special features” on the upcoming Evil Dead Blu-ray and from what you’ve said in recent interviews, it seems like you also had a bit to do with the casting and working with the actors.

BC: Right! That’s right, I forgot about that. Again tag teaming, casting is important to me. At least that is one thing I can participate in as a thespian. I can at least bring my side to it and the coolest thing about it was, actually, you’re sitting in a room with these actors. You know they can’t hide, because they are right there just a few feet from you. If they are faking it, you can smell it a mile away and I got to watch Fede interact with them to improve from take to take and to explain things…and by the end of the first couple of days, I was like, “We’re fine.” Because this director knows how to talk to actors and he knows what he’s doing and he is not full of shit. And I was like, “Oh thank God!” So that is half the battle right there, because if actors believe in their directors they will do anything for them. If they think their director is a jerk, then you’re doomed. So that was very helpful to me and then also, to be there when the lead people were cast and Fede and I had no major disagreements on that. We’d look at each other and go, “Yeah that guy was basically the best of the bunch” and believe me, we went through a lot. Evil Dead had a decent enough name that we got good actors to show up. So I thought that we put together a decent cast. Because these movies are hokey no matter what you’re going to do, but at least this time around we cast actors that had been in movies before. On the first Evil Dead none of us had done shit and you can kind of tell, but we had a lot of enthusiasm. That is what we had going for us, but I warned these actors too. I told them, “Hey, get ready! This will not be like any other movie you’ve made. You will go through a lot of physical issues. So don’t party. You’ve got to stay focused. This movie will end one day, but you’re going to wish it were going to end after only five days of shooting.” And I was right. (he laughs)

JB: Were any of them big fans of the original series?

BC: They were all pretty aware of it. Honestly it was their parents who were fans. They’d go, “Oh my God, my dad showed me that,” etc. So they were actually all too young to be direct fans of it, but they were all very aware of it and they were all aware that it is regarded as a decent low-budget weirdo horror movie. You know, they weren’t showing up to mock the movie.

JB: Was it weird working on an Evil Dead film that you weren’t starring in and Raimi wasn’t directing?

BC: Yeah it was, because it was its own beast. We couldn’t help, obviously, to have those influences…I mean I stuck so many of the original sound effects in that movie. If we needed something Fede would look over at me and go, (with an accent) “Bruce do you have any of your nostalgic effects,” that he would say with a little bit of distain and I’m like, “Yeah I got something right here.” We had all of the first couple of movies; they’ve re-mastered all of those horrorish sound effects tapes that we had and we have them all catalogued now. So I had a ball. I went into the studio with a sound editor for like four days and basically put together a “Roger Corman” sound job of the movie based on our original effects and I could always offer those up whenever we needed a little something or Fede was looking for something. I didn’t try and sell them too hard, but there are a couple of effects in there that, basically, only Sam Raimi and I know where they’re from and what the circumstances were for those particular sounds…which is fun. That is just a dumb thing that keeps us amused. We throw in little things.

Like there is one part in the cabin where the bad stuff happens in the new movie; there’s one room where all the shit goes down and that has a secret, buried in, original sound from the original wind in the original cabin, that we recorded for (the original) Evil Dead; that’s through most of the movie. We put it really low just in that one little room. Just to give it that same kind of feel, because it is a real creepy wind. We thought, “What the hell, let’s put a nice crisp clean version of it in there.”

It was actually fun working on an Evil Dead movie where you had sound that you could whiz around the room. The first Evil Dead was in mono. It wasn’t even in stereo for God’s sake! Now they go, “Where do you want that trap door?” “How about the lower right over here?” You know? “And then let’s move it over here to the left.” It draws your attention and it is just so clean and sharp and Roque Baños was great with the score. He basically did an operatic score. It couldn’t have been any bigger, but Fede wanted people to take it seriously. So he treated it like it was an epic story, even though it is kind of cheese-ball over the top.

It’s had a decent enough reaction, from watching enough screenings now…anyone looking for that, I think they will be fine with it. There are obviously going to be some people that are not looking for that and they didn’t have the same impression.

JB: Well I really enjoyed it and so has everyone that I’ve talked to. So it must be gratifying that the fans who are embracing it are being satisfied by it.

BC: Yes and that’s true, because they were very violently opposed to it. I love how (the original) Evil Dead suddenly got better the second we mentioned that we were going to do a remake. “You can’t remake that! That’s a classic!” I’m like, “Yeah? I read the reviews pal, from way back when.” (he laughs) It was not an instant classic. The L.A. Times called it an instant classic, but there were plenty of newspapers that were like, “This thing is the sickest of the sick.” It’s fine. I’m glad that it has aged well.

Exclusive: Bruce Campbell Talks Evil Dead on Blu-ray and Evil Dead 4 / Army of Darkness 2 JB: Well the Evil Dead films have been a bit of an “evergreen” for the DVD and Blu-ray markets. They just keep churning out new editions…

BC: Yeah no shit! Jeez louise…

JB: Those and Halloween. They are the big ones.

    BC: (he laughs) Okay. Yeah.

JB: Fans can’t get enough of those releases I guess. I know you’ve often said that horror films are not really your bag, but when you guys were making the original (Evil Dead), were there any specific films that you found inspiring?

BC: Well the really recent one at the time was Halloween. That was fresh in our minds, because of how cleverly John Carpenter could orchestrate the misdirection. You hear a sound over here, the character turns around. BAM! The guy is right there behind you. Those are things that are not “torture porn.” You’re not putting a guy’s wiener in a vice for half an hour. That’s not even scary. That’s just twisted. Scary is making people actually jump and another one that affected me, that was again not too much earlier than Evil Dead, was The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Which with the opening credit sequence…I almost wanted to leave the theater by the time the opening credits were over. The horrible imagery of corpses that have been dug up by these local creeps and draped over tombstones and (he laughs) those are the credits! These disturbing images of like bright photos of them, like police photos. I was like, “Oh man, I don’t know if I can take this movie.” And no one had even gotten killed yet. So I think those films were really landmark in creeping us out, being scary and making you jump at the same time.

We had good influences right around then. Time Magazine had Hollywood’s scariest summer in 1979. So we were just following through with, “Hey look, horror movies are starting to be an accepted genre.” So I think the decision was if we were going to make a horror movie, don’t dick around, because we didn’t want to get buried in the shuffle. We didn’t want to do a “guy with an axe” movie. So Sam concocted this whole, much more supernatural approach; much more like a monster movie.

JB: With the new Evil Dead coming out on Blu-ray, do you know if there are any goodies that fans should keep an eye out for?

BC: I think they’ve got a making of that is pretty decent. They covered all the basics I would say. I didn’t do the commentary for it. That was Fede and some of the actors, which was appropriate, because they were the ones there. If you were there day to day you know the film so much better and you know more of the things that happened. We kind of got reports beamed back to us. So we didn’t know a lot of that day to day stuff, but I think there are obviously interviews and all that. It should be a very acceptable package to the fans, because these days if your movie is an hour and a half, you have to have 17 hours of extras. I am sure there are multiple hours of galleries and all that. I think that Sony did a good job.

JB: There seems to be a big debate online as to whether it is a remake or a sequel. Do you have a viewpoint on it?

BC: Oh boy…I just look at it as another whole group of semi-young adults who spend a shitty night with this evil book. It just takes place in another universe and in the same sense I don’t see why we couldn’t make ARMY OF DARKNESS 2 and still run in our universe and then make a sequel to this movie and then they’d both be running in their own parallel universes.

JB: It is very “comic book” in a way.

BC: Yeah it is and fans ultimately drive this and the reason why we did a remake is because there was such commotion for a sequel, more than anything, but then Sam ran into this filmmaker Fede Alvarez who pitched him a remake idea and it caught his fancy. I am glad we picked Fede, because for a first time director, boy we got lucky and I’m going to say that only once. I will deny it in the future, but I think we got lucky. And Jane Levy, we got lucky with too, because if you’re a lead actor in an Evil Dead movie, you’ve got to bring it. You’ve just got to bring it and I thought she did. I thought she really committed and you know she’s going to get work. I think she’ll work. She won’t always have to strap that chainsaw on, because she’s got some tools in her little kit. I’d like to see her future stuff. I really would.

JB: I know you’ve got to be sick of answering this question, but I have to ask it. Is there any update on Army of Darkness 2?

BC: There’s no update other than the fact that Sam desires it, but everyone has the reality of their lives and I think he is going to continue on with making one large motion picture after another and in between time, he spends time and dicks around with his brother Ivan back in Michigan and supposedly this summer they are going to go noodle with some more ideas. And then they’ll get closer and they’ll threaten and then Sam will send me cryptic emails with things like, “How soon can you get back into shape?” And I’m like, “As soon as you cough up act one.” It is how it is. It is just a fun little game right now, but you know Evil Dead, the remake, honestly put it back on the table, because it was the first time Rob, Sam and I actually went, “Alright, what’s the deal? Would we want to do another one of these damn movies? Could we even? And what kind of budget would it be?” You go from (the original) Evil Dead, a $350,000 movie, up to Evil Dead 4 or Army of Darkness 2 and if Sam directed it, it would be $100 million. That would be cheap for Sam. Sam is like, “Well, I will do it for a third of my usual rate. I will make it for a 100 million.” So that’s what baffles me and we’ll see. Sam’s a master filmmaker, but he is usually a guy that is not quick.

JB: Do you think there is any chance it could be called Evil Dead 4: Army of Darkness 2?

BC: Yeah there would be. Yeah.

JB: I think that would satisfy everybody.

BC: Right. (he laughs) Well that is technically what it is. You know it was only the studio that wanted to change the name. It would’ve been Evil Dead 3, but they wanted it to stand on its own. It’s like, “I see.” They were in denial. They wanted it to be more popular than just for the cult horror crowd, but those movies have their own limits. You know? They have their own limits of how many people can handle crazy weird horror, because it is not for everybody and why should it be? That’s why I think they need to be cheap. Horror movies should always be made cheaply. An expensive horror movie is bound to fail, because there just aren’t that many people who want to see horror movies. I’m always wrong though, of course The Exorcist made a hundred bazillion dollars and was a big Hollywood production, but still the classic M.O. should be that they should be under $5 million.

JB: Is there anything else you want the fans to know about the new Evil Dead (remake) Blu-ray and DVD?

BC: No. I’m just excited for everybody who wanted to see the movie, but did not get their butts to the theater. Now’s your chance. Here you go. Bring it to your living room. Comin’ at ya! Nice and easy. And I hope they enjoy it, because I think it’s good. Get a group of friends and get them around. Get a couple people that don’t like horror movies and the rest of them should be horror movie freaks and I think they will have some fun experiencing that in their own home. But everyone’s system is getting bigger and bigger now. So they’re almost the size of movie theaters, which are getting smaller and smaller. So, I think it’s good.

JB: Well thank you so much, this was great. I really appreciate you give me a little bit of your time.

BC: Thank you sir. Have a good afternoon.
