James Purefoy Joins Kevin Williamson's New Project for Fox

James Purefoy Joins Kevin Williamson's New Project for FoxAs if we weren't excited enough about Kevin Williamson's still untitled new project for Fox TV, which stars Kevin Bacon, now comes word as to whom Bacon will be facing off against. Read on for the details!

Per Deadline, James Purefoy (John Carter, Resident Evil, "Rome") has signed on for the second starring role in the series from Warner Bros. TV and Williamson’s studio-based Outerbanks Entertainment. It's described as an edge-of-the-seat thriller about Joe Carroll (Purefoy), a diabolical serial killer who uses technology to create a cult of serial killers, and the retired FBI profiler (Bacon) who finds himself in the middle of it.

Marcos Siega ("The Vampire Diaries", "Dexter") is set to direct the pilot, written and executive produced by Williamson, creator of the Scream horror movie franchise and co-creator/executive producer of The CW’s "The Vampire Diaries" and "The Secret Circle".

Like Bacon, Purefoy was among the most sought-after actors this pilot season. He was holding four offers when he picked Williamson's. The project may have had extra appeal because of the fact that, if it goes to series, it will produce 15 episodes a season instead of the standard 22, which was also part of Bacon’s deal to star in it.

McG Chases Storms for SyfyThe Syfy channel and director McG. For whatever reason those things sound so right together. Like they were meant to be. And now finally they are almost together.

According to Variety, Syfy Films is developing Day 38 and is in early talks with McG and Mary Viola to produce and Richard Farmer to direct the found-footage thriller.

The project, scripted by Chris Rossi and Gabe Scott, was developed in-house at McG's Wonderland Sound and Vision with Farmer -- a noted commercial director whose latest campaigns include Sims, Activision, and Nintendo.

The story is told from the point of view of a group of stormchasers who face a Category 5 tornado and find themselves fighting off a force even greater than Mother Nature.

Year-old SyFy Films, created as a venture between Universal and SyFy Ventures, made its first deal in October when it bought feature rights to George R.R. Martin's superhero anthology Wild Cards and tapped Melinda Snodgrass to pen the screenplay.

Jon Favreau Ready to Start a RevolutionSeveral days ago we brought you the news that "Supernatural" creator Eric Kripke and the master of all things mysterious, J.J. Abrams, were working together on a new pilot for NBC. Today a director has been found to kick off the spooky!

According to Deadline, Jon Favreau has been tapped to direct Eric Kripke/JJ Abrams’ high-concept NBC pilot "Revolution". The project, written by "Supernatural" creator Kripke, is being described as a high-octane action drama following a group of characters struggling to survive and reunite with loved ones in a world where all forms of energy have mysteriously ceased to exist.

Abrams, Kripke and Bryan Burk are executive producing. This marks the first drama pilot directing gig for Favreau, who has helmed a few comedy pilots in the past, including that for the ABC series "In Case Of Emergency" starring David Arquette. Check Out Short Film The Swarm, Shot Entirely on Xperia Arc S…Yeah, a Phone

Here is the beauty of the horror genre. Filmmakers challenge themselves to do things differently. We've seen, for example, movies made with a zero dollar budget or taken in a single shot. You never see that in other genres. You don't see anybody trying to find a unique way to shoot a buddy comedy. Only in horror do you get these unique approaches to filmmaking. And we've got a real winner for you with The Swarm.

Directed by Tom Harper, who also shares writing credit with Geoff Bussetil and Daniel Kaluuva, The Swarm is an alien invasion film based in London, shot entirely on five Xperia Arc S phones. That's right, folks, this movie was shot on mobile telephones.

Amazing, I know. Harper is an up-and-coming British director who absolutely nailed this project. For a film that was shot in two days on cell phones, it's awesome.

The film features Jacob Anderson, Alex Austin, Eloise Barnes, Steven Cree, Susan Earl, Bayo Gbadamosi, Tom Goodman-Hill, Ellen Hill, Eliza Newman and Jessica Tomchak. Scroll down and check out their work. We've included the film in its entirely (about 10 minutes) and a making-of companion piece that is well worth investing about four minutes to watch. New Details Explain What Will Happen to The Last of Us

0
0

Up until now, very few details have been revealed surrounding the plot and storyline in The Last of Us. However, that all changed in a recent interview with Naughty Dog where nearly every detail of the storyline was broken down.

Key Facts from the Interview

  • The world presented in The Last of Us takes place 20 years after an apocalyptic event has made civilization slowly fall apart.
  • The story begins in one of the last remaining military sanctioned quarantine zones where martial law is in effect and every preventive measure is being taken to prevent its collapse.
  • Joel is introduced in this quarantine zone as a man in his late 40's who has taken on a hardened exterior from the brutal events that occur in the new world. Joel works within the city doing any jobs that pay good money, and his latest assignment is to smuggle a 14-year-old girl out of the city.
  • Ellie is the 14-year-old girl in question, and she has never ventured outside of the quarantined walls of the city. Ellie is raised in an orphanage with many other kids, and she constantly gets into trouble.
  • The duo are soon discovered outside of the quarantine zone, and Joel is marked as a enemy of the military. Since reentering the city is no longer an option, the two set off to find one of Joel's friends that may watch over the girl for him in the outside world.
  • The outside world presented in The Last of Us imagines and closely imitates a world that has been forgotten by man and reclaimed by nature. Busy cities have now been taken over by vegetation, wildlife and other forms of nature.
  • For more information about the game, which is a PlayStation 3 exclusive, check out the official The Last of Us website.

Even more good news for the filmmakers behind the anthology V/H/S (review here)... Screen Daily reports that Epic Pictures has taken on foreign sales rights to the Sundance hit and will be selling the film worldwide.

The directors are Adam Wingard (You're Next, A Horrible Way to Die, Pop Skull), Simon Barrett (You're Next, Dead Birds, Read Sands), Ti West (The House of the Devil, The Roost, The Innkeepers), David Bruckner (The Signal), Joe Swanberg (Silver Bullets), Glenn McQuaid (I Sell the Dead), along with Radio Silence, two of whom were part of the YouTube sensations known as Chad, Matt and Rob (Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Chad Villella).

Magnolia Pictures' genre label Magnet Releasing picked up US and Canadian rights during Sundance with an eye toward a fall theatrical release. Rights to the UK are currently closing as well. Watch for that news soon! The film was notable at Sundance when an audience member fainted.

Epic CEO Patrick Ewald said: "I have not experienced such an audience reaction to a movie since 'Paranormal Activity,' 'Insidious,' or 'The Blair Witch Project.' The fact that we have six of the most popular horror directors in one movie is an incredible hook that will make this film one to remember. At EFM last year we had an incredible success launching Darren Lynn Bousman’s supernatural thriller '11-11-11' so we are anticipating a great 2012 EFM with 'V/H/S.'"

The Mask of the Red Death Proves to be Infectious in Berlin

    0
    0

Another retelling of a classic Edgar Allan Poe tale is on its way and we have the first details and early sales art for you right here! Dig it!

    From the Press Release
On the eve of the Berlin film market, prolific independent producer Jonathan Sothcott (Elfie Hopkins, Strippers Vs Werewolves) has announced ambitious plans for a post-apocalyptic, steampunk-styled adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s classic horror story The Mask of the Red Death, to be directed by acclaimed British filmmaker Robert Pratten (Mindflesh, London Voodoo).

“London, 2020. As the radioactive clouds begin to fade after a devastating nuclear war, the last dregs of humanity fight to survive – drought and famine cripple this cracked, broken world. Electricity is a thing of the past. Hideous mutants stalk the night, desperately searching for food and warmth. A cold planet. A dying planet. Superstition is rife. Evil rises. Through the husk of the once great metropolis stalks a lone figure, The Red Death: to some a god, to others a freedom fighter. To all a nightmare of agonising death.

From the shell of a once great building, all that remains of his empire, corrupt billionaire Marzo rules what is left of London. His kill squads murder, pillage and rape. His group of friends indulge in every excess. Yet neither money or power can save Marzo from the Red Death… and it is coming for him.”

The Mask of the Red Death will be a transmedia project encompassing a feature film, mobile app, web videos and social media. All media and marketing for the project will be integrated with a new technology called Conducttr, which allows audiences to take a participatory role in the storyworld. Although audiences can't affect the outcome of the movie - it plays like any other - they will be incentivised to collect items across the web and physical locations in order to have a heightened experience of the movie when it screens.

Sothcott, Head of Programming for the Horror Channel prior to his successful career as a film producer, said, “I have been looking for a project to work on with Robert that was more than just a film. As a producer I am constantly looking for new ways to tell stories, and transmedia represents a very exciting opportunity. This version of Poe’s most famous story has everything the modern horror audience could want – it's terrifying, sexy, action-packed and gory. As a filmmaker, Robert has a unique visual style that will make for an incredibly stylish film – this will be every bit as shocking as Mindflesh was, and the post-apocalyptic setting allows us to give it a unique flavour – part steampunk, part cyber-goth.”

Pratten commented, "When Jonathan mentioned the idea to me, my mind first went to Tenpenny Tower in Fallout 3. It's not quite like that at all, but it does give you the idea of a rich dude trying to protect himself from the inevitability of death after an apocalypse. This is a great opportunity to show how society might look after a reboot from a damaged hard drive; there's a lot of what we recognize mashed up with medieval behavior we thought had been erased.I n a world today in which many are predominantly hostile to spirituality, all they've done is replace faith in God with a faith in silicon chips and silicon breasts. In an post-apocalyptic Britain set in 2020, with life as we know irretrievably lost, new leaders will need to create myths in order to bring hope to the hopeless. And where there is no hope there'll be violence, drugs, superstition and lust driven by the fear of facing our own mortality."

The $1.5 million picture is scheduled to begin principal photography on June 1st, 2012. No casting has been announced as yet.

Edgar Allan Poe’s short story The Mask of the Red Death was first published in 1842 and has been filmed a number of times, most notably by Roger Corman in 1964 with a cast including Vincent Price and Hazel Court.

Summit's Warm Bodies Put in Storage Until 2013

    0
    0

Get out your calendars and pencils! Time for a good old fashioned game of release date shuffle, kids! Summit Entertainment announced today that they have moved the release date of Warm Bodies. Previously set for release on August 10, 2012, the film will now arrive on February 1, 2013.

Starring Nicholas Hoult, Rob Corddry, Theresa Palmer, and John Malkovich, the film follows an existentially tormented zombie named "R" who begins an unlikely friendship with the girlfriend of one of his victims. It starts a chain reaction that will transform him, his fellow zombies, and maybe the whole undead world.

We can hear the tweens swooning already! Look for more on this rotting romance soon!

Check out Warm Bodies in theatres on February 1, 2013.

    Synopsis
Zombies love people, especially their brains. But R (Nicholas Hoult) is different. He’s alive inside, unlike the hundreds of other grunting, drooling undead — all victims of a recent plague that drove the remaining survivors into a heavily guarded city. Now the Zombies roam about an airport terminal, searching for human prey and living in fear of the vicious Boneys, the next undead incarnation.

One day, R and his best friend M lumber toward the city in search of food. There, R first sets his eyes on JULIE (Teresa Palmer), a beautiful human. Determined to save her—first from the other Zombies and then from the Boneys—R hides her in his home, a cluttered 747 aircraft. Julie is terrified, and R’s grunted assurances of “Not…eat” do little to calm her. But when R begins to act more human than Zombie, coming to her defense, refusing to eat human flesh, and even speaking in full sentences, Julie realizes that R is special.

After a few close calls with the Boneys, and with her father mounting an armed search for her, Julie realizes she can’t hide forever. So she sneaks back home, leaving R broken-hearted. Desperate to see her, R decides to comb his hair, stand a little straighter, and impersonate a human long enough to get past the city guards. If only he can prove to the humans that Zombies can change, maybe R and Julie’s love might stand a chance. But with the rampaging Boneys heading toward the city and Julie’s father intent on killing R and his Zombie friends, the stage is set for an all-out battle between the living and the undead.

A genre-bending tale of love and transformation, WARM BODIES is a story about a boy who loves a girl…for more than just her body.
